- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time, a wave original.
- 0:10Speaker 1: My name is Bomani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:12Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:21Speaker 1: a hater. And I want to pull the curtain back
- 0:24Speaker 1: for you guys just a little bit. We record the
- 0:30Speaker 1: show at different times based on different circumstances. And sometimes
- 0:36Speaker 1: we'll record a show on Sunday night. And sometimes we'll
- 0:39Speaker 1: record a show on Monday morning. It just kind of
- 0:41Speaker 1: depends on what the sports day is like.
- 0:43Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Give us a little more
- 0:44Speaker 2: time for the edit. Different things. We try to.
- 0:46Speaker 1: Provide the best product for you as we possibly can.
- 0:50Speaker 1: And on Sunday night, America's team, the Detroit Lions, lost
- 0:56Speaker 1: a hard-fought battle against... The Kansas City Chiefs. Damn it.
- 1:03Speaker 1: We won't fight, though. But anyway, so we had decided
- 1:06Speaker 1: that we were going to record on Monday morning. And Ryan,
- 1:10Speaker 1: the reason it's really best that we recorded on Monday
- 1:12Speaker 1: morning this time is people don't realize we sat up
- 1:16Speaker 1: here for 15 minutes before the show.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Yep.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Talking about James Franklin.
- 1:23Speaker 3: And could have talked more.
- 1:24Speaker 1: Yeah, I have spent more of this time than I realized.
- 1:28Speaker 1: making sense of what happened with James Franklin.
- 1:30Speaker 2: And let me tell you this.
- 1:31Speaker 1: So I get up this morning, tossing up some weights,
- 1:35Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying? Maintaining this physique. And I
- 1:38Speaker 1: came across some videos on Twitter and Josh Pate said
- 1:43Speaker 1: something that I really hadn't quite thought about.
- 1:49Speaker 2: James Franklin, in the.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Last 42 games that he has coached, his team's record.
- 1:58Speaker 2: Is 34 and.
- 2:02Speaker 4: Eight.
- 2:03Speaker 2: They just shit-canned him on Sunday. 34 and eight.
- 2:11Speaker 1: Now, I have been trying to figure out where exactly
- 2:15Speaker 1: to begin on this. I know where I ultimately want
- 2:19Speaker 1: to land on this.
- 2:21Speaker 2: So when this happens, I talk to Spencer.
- 2:25Speaker 1: And Spencer is explaining to me some of the outright
- 2:29Speaker 1: coaching calamities that Penn State had in the last three games,
- 2:34Speaker 1: these games that got Franklin fired. Now, for those of
- 2:39Speaker 1: you who don't pay but so much attention to Penn
- 2:41Speaker 1: State or pay attention to college football in general, you
- 2:44Speaker 1: may be thinking to yourself, hey, I heard people thought
- 2:46Speaker 1: that Penn State was going to win the national championship
- 2:50Speaker 1: to start the year.
- 2:51Speaker 4: You are correct.
- 2:53Speaker 2: You may have even.
- 2:54Speaker 1: Heard people say, hey, I thought I heard that Penn
- 2:58Speaker 1: State could win the national championship two and a.
- 3:02Speaker 2: Half weeks ago. You would also be correct.
- 3:08Speaker 1: You may remember people being like, well, damn, they lost
- 3:12Speaker 1: that home in overtime to a top five team.
- 3:16Speaker 2: I mean, they can still pull it together, right?
- 3:21Speaker 1: And you may be like, damn, I feel like that
- 3:23Speaker 1: was 14 days ago.
- 3:27Speaker 2: You would be correct.
- 3:30Speaker 1: And I've never seen anybody get themselves fired faster than this. Like,
- 3:40Speaker 1: you have examples, and I talk about this all the time, legendarily,
- 3:44Speaker 1: when Arkansas fired Jack Crow because they lost to the Citadel.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And they fired his ass on Sunday. I've talked about
- 3:51Speaker 2: that before.
- 3:52Speaker 1: I feel like what happened here is in a similar class,
- 3:55Speaker 1: but in a different one. Franklin's problem is, and I
- 4:00Speaker 1: mentioned that 34 and 8, and we talk about this
- 4:03Speaker 1: on the show a lot. A couple weeks ago, we
- 4:06Speaker 1: talked about it on the show, and I made the
- 4:08Speaker 1: point that, in fact, it was last week, I think.
- 4:13Speaker 1: Franklin's in that zone where it is more interesting when
- 4:16Speaker 1: his team loses than it ever is when they win.
- 4:20Speaker 1: By the way, I also said that about Deion Sanders
- 4:24Speaker 1: and they got a win over a ranked opponent over
- 4:26Speaker 1: the weekend. And somehow I don't see my people marching
- 4:30Speaker 1: in the streets and wearing red, black and green like
- 4:32Speaker 1: they was two years ago.
- 4:34Speaker 2: It's weird. But anyway.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Franklin got into that zone.
- 4:39Speaker 2: And so you can put anybody's record.
- 4:42Speaker 1: Up in college football, but because of the variance in
- 4:45Speaker 1: what every game in college football is and what every
- 4:48Speaker 1: game in college football means, it's not just about how
- 4:52Speaker 1: many games you win. It's about who you beat. It's
- 4:55Speaker 1: not just about how many games you lose. It's about
- 4:58Speaker 1: who beats you. Franklin had gotten very, very deep into
- 5:04Speaker 1: the zone. By the way, So far out of small
- 5:09Speaker 1: sample that he was about to be in legitimate in
- 5:12Speaker 1: is greater than 30 large sample on having a terrible
- 5:17Speaker 1: record against top 10 opponents. I want to say it's
- 5:20Speaker 1: four and 20 or four and 21. It's something in
- 5:22Speaker 1: that zone. It's not hyperbole what I just gave you.
- 5:25Speaker 1: It's that bad. It's not just the games you win
- 5:30Speaker 1: and not just the games you lose.
- 5:32Speaker 2: It's who it happens against.
- 5:34Speaker 3: 4-21 against AAP top 10 opponents and 1-18 against top
- 5:38Speaker 3: 10 opponents in the Big Ten.
- 5:42Speaker 2: It can't be that, right?
- 5:43Speaker 1: Now, does that mean you shit-cared your coach in the
- 5:46Speaker 1: middle of the year? Like, Ryan, you were around when
- 5:49Speaker 1: LSU did this to Les Miles.
- 5:51Speaker 3: Correct.
- 5:52Speaker 1: But what was different, and you correct me if I'm
- 5:54Speaker 1: wrong here on that season, They were set to fire
- 5:57Speaker 1: Les the year before, and then there was this weird
- 6:00Speaker 1: populist uprising.
- 6:01Speaker 3: In the middle of the game.
- 6:02Speaker 2: Yeah, and they won a game against Texas A & M.
- 6:05Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 6:05Speaker 1: And everybody got sentimental about it. And then they said, oh, okay,
- 6:09Speaker 1: we'll bring Les back. And then you went out the
- 6:10Speaker 1: next year, you lost at Lambeau Field and a couple more,
- 6:14Speaker 1: and then it was.
- 6:15Speaker 3: Just like, oh, okay, this is- He got fired at
- 6:17Speaker 3: two and two.
- 6:18Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:19Speaker 2: Now, they waited till the end of the year to
- 6:21Speaker 2: fire Ogeron, right?
- 6:23Speaker 3: No, they told him in the middle of the year
- 6:25Speaker 3: that this was your last year. He got it like
- 6:27Speaker 3: kind of like a grace period, like, hey, buddy, you
- 6:29Speaker 3: got to go.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Yeah, but he got the rest of the year.
- 6:31Speaker 3: Correct.
- 6:32Speaker 1: There were reports that Ed Ogeron was bringing his girlfriends
- 6:37Speaker 1: and their children to practice.
- 6:39Speaker 4: Yes.
- 6:40Speaker 2: There was a report that Ed Ogeron... accidentally tried to
- 6:46Speaker 2: spit game.
- 6:47Speaker 1: To the wife of a member of the board at
- 6:51Speaker 1: Circle K in the parking lot.
- 6:53Speaker 6: Correct.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I don't know if it was exactly Circle K, but
- 6:55Speaker 1: I like to imagine that.
- 6:56Speaker 3: It was Circle K. It was emotionally a Circle K,
- 6:58Speaker 3: you know. Yes, yes.
- 7:00Speaker 2: By the way, did you know they have Circle Ks
- 7:01Speaker 2: in Vietnam?
- 7:03Speaker 3: No, I did not. That's a travel show I would watch.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Circle K is deep in Vietnam.
- 7:09Speaker 3: I didn't realize the brand was that strong.
- 7:10Speaker 2: Right, I'm out of your life.
- 7:13Speaker 3: Do they have Piggly Wiggly too?
- 7:15Speaker 2: Well, so the thing about Asia is intellectual property is
- 7:19Speaker 2: but a notion.
- 7:20Speaker 4: Got it, okay.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Over there. Copyright infringement is wild, but I looked it up,
- 7:24Speaker 2: as I recall, and it's actually a Circle K.
- 7:27Speaker 1: But anyway, I've never heard of somebody getting fired like
- 7:30Speaker 1: this at this time, because what does it serve? And
- 7:33Speaker 1: that's before we get to the $ 50 million buyout. Now,
- 7:37Speaker 1: this is what I am taking also from the fact
- 7:39Speaker 1: that they shit-cared Franklin with this many games left. They
- 7:43Speaker 1: were still in the running to get to the playoff
- 7:47Speaker 1: two weeks ago. They suffered not one, but two inexcusable losses.
- 7:59Speaker 2: Back to back.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I have to assume that something happened. This doesn't make
- 8:05Speaker 1: any sense.
- 8:06Speaker 2: I want to be clear about this.
- 8:09Speaker 1: People get fired because somebody wants to fire them. That's
- 8:14Speaker 1: always the reason. No matter who it is, no matter
- 8:16Speaker 1: what it is. People get fired because somebody wants to
- 8:20Speaker 1: fire them. And clearly, people wanted to fire Franklin. I
- 8:24Speaker 1: don't know how well he got along with the people
- 8:26Speaker 1: that make decisions there. I don't really have a great
- 8:28Speaker 1: handle on his relationship with the fans. I do know
- 8:32Speaker 1: that Penn State.
- 8:35Speaker 2: Okay, I don't know exactly how.
- 8:37Speaker 1: Good Penn State fans believe they should actually be. But
- 8:43Speaker 1: every now and then, they should beat Ohio State and Michigan,
- 8:47Speaker 1: at least when those two schools are good.
- 8:49Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Every now and then, they
- 8:52Speaker 2: should do that. It should not be a clear tier below.
- 8:56Speaker 1: So I was talking to my buddy, Alan Kinney, who
- 8:59Speaker 1: covers Oklahoma sports. And we were talking about the Gary
- 9:04Speaker 1: Gibbs era of OU football, which none of you really
- 9:06Speaker 1: remember too well. But Back when the NCAA did stuff
- 9:10Speaker 1: like say you couldn't go on TV for a year
- 9:12Speaker 1: and cut your scholarships to like 15 and wouldn't let
- 9:16Speaker 1: you go to bowl games and all kinds of stuff
- 9:18Speaker 1: like that. They put the hurt to Oklahoma, really put
- 9:23Speaker 1: the hurt to Oklahoma. Barry Switzer had to quit. And
- 9:26Speaker 1: Gary Gibbs had the job for like five or six years.
- 9:28Speaker 1: And it wasn't a bad tenure. It was an okay
- 9:32Speaker 1: tenure considering the circumstances. And it gets forgotten that it
- 9:36Speaker 1: was actually an okay tenure considering the circumstances. The problem
- 9:39Speaker 1: was he couldn't beat Colorado and he couldn't beat Nebraska.
- 9:44Speaker 1: Those nine wins you got don't matter that much if
- 9:47Speaker 1: you can't.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Ever beat those people. Ever. Like, Ryan, I think you'd
- 9:54Speaker 2: agree with me.
- 9:55Speaker 1: The thing that really got Les Miles fired was losing
- 9:56Speaker 1: to Alabama five years in a row.
- 9:58Speaker 3: It might have been more than that.
- 9:59Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 10:00Speaker 3: I think it was five or six.
- 10:01Speaker 2: It was four years in a row, but it was
- 10:03Speaker 2: five games. Yes. Because the first one was the national
- 10:06Speaker 2: championship game.
- 10:07Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 10:07Speaker 2: Where?
- 10:08Speaker 3: They couldn't cross the midfield.
- 10:09Speaker 2: Yeah, I know you don't want to talk about it.
- 10:10Speaker 3: I was there. Yeah, it's fine.
- 10:13Speaker 2: That's right. I keep forgetting. That was at the Superdome.
- 10:16Speaker 2: So you guys were just all there.
- 10:17Speaker 3: We were all there. Yeah. We were all there. And
- 10:23Speaker 3: you remember, they won in 03.
- 10:24Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:25Speaker 2: And they won in 07.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Both in New Orleans.
- 10:28Speaker 2: Yes, they were.
- 10:28Speaker 3: So people were prepared to be happy.
- 10:31Speaker 5: Yes.
- 10:31Speaker 3: And they were not happy.
- 10:32Speaker 1: LSU quietly had a Miami Hurricanes run where it becomes
- 10:35Speaker 1: easier to win national championships when you play the championship
- 10:38Speaker 1: game at the crib.
- 10:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:41Speaker 2: Neither here nor there, though.
- 10:43Speaker 3: But yeah.
- 10:43Speaker 5: So.
- 10:46Speaker 1: You got to win those every now and then. Like,
- 10:49Speaker 1: I think a great example of this, like, again, this
- 10:52Speaker 1: is the topic I love so much, which is like
- 10:53Speaker 1: the relativity of college football. Everybody talks about how great
- 10:58Speaker 1: a rivalry Auburn-Alabama is. And it's just great because those
- 11:02Speaker 1: people are crazy. But these are not schools of equal footing.
- 11:07Speaker 2: They're not. And I think Auburn fans understand that. I
- 11:12Speaker 2: think they get that. But what you need, here's what
- 11:15Speaker 2: can't happen at Auburn.
- 11:18Speaker 1: You can't have multiple cycles where players stay there for
- 11:24Speaker 1: four years and never beat Alabama.
- 11:28Speaker 2: You see what I mean?
- 11:29Speaker 1: It can't be that. You gotta get one every three
- 11:34Speaker 1: to four years, right? You gotta be able to say
- 11:37Speaker 1: you did something like that. At Penn State, when you're
- 11:39Speaker 1: talking about Ohio State and Michigan, getting one out of
- 11:43Speaker 1: the two of those has gotta be a little bit
- 11:45Speaker 1: more frequent than that. And on top of it, Penn
- 11:49Speaker 1: State is a tier below Ohio State and always be.
- 11:52Speaker 2: Like Penn State is not a tier one. They're a
- 11:55Speaker 2: tier below Ohio State.
- 11:58Speaker 1: But if you were to try to ask me to
- 12:00Speaker 1: explain why it is that Penn State shouldn't be better
- 12:03Speaker 1: than Michigan, and.
- 12:04Speaker 2: By the way, right now, they probably are better than Michigan, but.
- 12:09Speaker 1: There's no argument for why they cannot be consistently better
- 12:11Speaker 1: than Michigan. And there's no argument for why it is
- 12:14Speaker 1: that they should not try to find a coach that
- 12:17Speaker 1: puts them in a position.
- 12:18Speaker 2: Where that happens. You see what I mean?
- 12:21Speaker 1: Like, those are the questions that programs have to ask themselves.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And it's in part because all of this is just
- 12:29Speaker 1: about vibes, man. Like, maybe Penn State fans think they're
- 12:33Speaker 1: supposed to be winning national championships every year.
- 12:36Speaker 2: I don't think they're that stupid. But, you know, perhaps
- 12:39Speaker 2: it is possible that that's what it is.
- 12:42Speaker 1: But the legacy of Penn State football is not built
- 12:45Speaker 1: on their time in the Big Ten. It's built on
- 12:47Speaker 1: their time as an independent. They've been in the Big
- 12:49Speaker 1: Ten now for over 30 years. They've won the Big
- 12:55Speaker 1: Ten something like 30 times.
- 12:57Speaker 2: I mean, three times. Ooh, 30, that would be amazing.
- 12:59Speaker 2: They've won it something like three or four times. Like,
- 13:02Speaker 2: this is not.
- 13:04Speaker 2: They're not that.
- 13:07Speaker 1: But you can't do two inexcusable losses in a row
- 13:11Speaker 1: and assume you're going to keep your job. If they
- 13:14Speaker 1: wanted him to still be the coach... he would still
- 13:17Speaker 1: be the coach, right? But one thing about taking an
- 13:20Speaker 1: inexcusable loss immediately after an inexcusable loss, come on, man,
- 13:24Speaker 1: that's tough on the people.
- 13:26Speaker 2: I remember when Texas had to decide to get rid
- 13:28Speaker 2: of Charlie Strong. Charlie Strong had an inexcusable loss at
- 13:32Speaker 2: Kansas and they didn't fire him. And then they came
- 13:35Speaker 2: out on Thanksgiving and got beat by a zillion points
- 13:38Speaker 2: at home by, I think it was TCU.
- 13:40Speaker 1: You can't do two inexcusable losses in a row. I
- 13:45Speaker 1: just thought a $ 50 million buyout would insulate you in
- 13:49Speaker 1: times like those. And buddy, I was wrong. I don't
- 13:57Speaker 1: know who the Penn State money is. That's another fun
- 13:59Speaker 1: game in college football is where exactly does your money
- 14:04Speaker 1: come from? Who makes these money decisions? Do you have
- 14:08Speaker 1: one specific money man? I don't really know how it
- 14:11Speaker 1: works at Penn State when it comes to all those things.
- 14:15Speaker 1: But I didn't... Ryan, there are two ways to look
- 14:18Speaker 1: at this. Either one, losing at home to Northwestern was
- 14:22Speaker 1: so abominable that they were like, we're going to fire
- 14:24Speaker 1: him and then we're going to figure out the money
- 14:26Speaker 1: from there.
- 14:27Speaker 2: Or, number two, some people have made it known for
- 14:30Speaker 2: a while, just.
- 14:31Speaker 7: Say the word.
- 14:32Speaker 2: We've got to just say the word.
- 14:35Speaker 3: I also think it's instructive that the same day that
- 14:38Speaker 3: Penn State has an unexcusable loss, Indiana goes to Autzen
- 14:43Speaker 3: and beats... And I think those things are related.
- 14:50Speaker 1: We're going to put a pin in that one because
- 14:52Speaker 1: that's also the most fun part about this.
- 14:56Speaker 2: They just rounded up 50.
- 15:00Speaker 1: Remember when the NCAA tried to tear down Penn State's
- 15:03Speaker 1: program because they believed the program turned an eye to
- 15:06Speaker 1: a legacy of child molestation?
- 15:08Speaker 2: You remember that?
- 15:09Speaker 1: The big thing they tried to express was we need
- 15:12Speaker 1: to tear down a culture and a world and an
- 15:14Speaker 1: idea that football matters more than anything in the world, basically.
- 15:19Speaker 2: And they did this whole spiel about that.
- 15:22Speaker 1: That was in 2012 that they did this.
- 15:26Speaker 2: Okay. It's 2025 and they are paying somebody $ 50.
- 15:32Speaker 1: Million not to work there anymore. Guys, I don't think
- 15:37Speaker 1: that worked. I've also been reading things where people give
- 15:40Speaker 1: the indication that Penn State is all on board with
- 15:45Speaker 1: the private equity push in the Big Ten. Like all
- 15:48Speaker 1: of these things are going on at one time. Now
- 15:50Speaker 1: do you see why me and Ryan could have talked
- 15:51Speaker 1: about this one hour? I could do a whole show
- 15:53Speaker 1: about this because there's so many different things.
- 15:54Speaker 3: We haven't gotten to, you know, the comparisons to Jimbo,
- 15:58Speaker 3: who the next coach is.
- 15:59Speaker 2: We don't know any of that.
- 16:01Speaker 1: There's no time to get to that part. We haven't
- 16:03Speaker 1: gotten to how good Penn State should actually be.
- 16:06Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 16:06Speaker 1: Like I started talking about that and then wound up
- 16:08Speaker 1: with something else because I don't have a, they finished
- 16:11Speaker 1: in the top five, in the top 10, five times
- 16:13Speaker 1: in the last 10 years.
- 16:14Speaker 3: They were lost by a field goal in the semifinal.
- 16:18Speaker 3: You know, what, 10 months ago?
- 16:19Speaker 2: 10 months ago. They just lost in overtime in Oregon
- 16:22Speaker 2: just a minute ago. And the coach just lost his job.
- 16:24Speaker 1: And by the way, a defensible move is just crazy
- 16:28Speaker 1: because it.
- 16:29Speaker 5: Costs $ 50 million.
- 16:32Speaker 1: So yeah, maybe they need that private equity influx so
- 16:34Speaker 1: they can go ahead and do this.
- 16:36Speaker 2: There also has to be a bunch of other coaches
- 16:39Speaker 2: shitting bricks right now.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Because if somebody will pay $ 50 million to get that
- 16:44Speaker 1: guy out of there, how serious are you about football?
- 16:48Speaker 1: I don't know if you guys remember this. When Florida
- 16:49Speaker 1: State fired Willie Taggart, I want to say it was
- 16:51Speaker 1: in the middle of his second year, which was the
- 16:53Speaker 1: fastest that I recalled anybody under those circumstances getting fired,
- 16:57Speaker 1: which raised all kinds of questions about whether or not
- 17:00Speaker 1: you did that because, well, basically... Clearly, it hadn't happened
- 17:04Speaker 1: to no white people because it hadn't happened to nobody, right?
- 17:07Speaker 1: But if you watch Willie Taggart, Florida State Seminole football, boy,
- 17:11Speaker 1: they look like they needed to fire the coach.
- 17:13Speaker 2: It had just never happened before. You see what I mean?
- 17:16Speaker 1: It wasn't like it was understandable. You guys, if you
- 17:18Speaker 1: listen to me for a while, you know I say
- 17:20Speaker 1: anybody can get.
- 17:21Speaker 2: Fired for any reason. But it just... never happened before.
- 17:26Speaker 1: I want to say the week after, maybe two weeks after,
- 17:29Speaker 1: Chad Morris was in the second season of a disastrous
- 17:31Speaker 1: stint at Arkansas, and they lost that home 45 to
- 17:35Speaker 1: 19 to Western Kentucky, and they fired that man the
- 17:39Speaker 1: next day. Once the precedent had been set, Arkansas.
- 17:43Speaker 3: Was like, all right, cool.
- 17:44Speaker 2: We're going to go ahead and get his ass out
- 17:45Speaker 2: of here.
- 17:46Speaker 1: It's got to be a bunch of people that are
- 17:47Speaker 1: shitting bricks right now. If they put together the 50
- 17:50Speaker 1: to get that dude out of there, and we don't
- 17:52Speaker 1: even know what their money be hitting on, Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey,
- 17:56Speaker 1: Mike Norvell, you might want to get your shit together
- 17:59Speaker 1: down there at Florida State.
- 18:01Speaker 3: Luke Fickle.
- 18:02Speaker 2: Luke Fickle. I think he's done in that town.
- 18:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:06Speaker 2: All you people need to need to really, really, really, really,
- 18:10Speaker 2: really get this going.
- 18:10Speaker 1: Now, what will be funny is Mike Loxley also is
- 18:13Speaker 1: on that list because his replacement.
- 18:15Speaker 2: Just became available.
- 18:17Speaker 1: My guy Joe Giglio in North Carolina says that Franklin
- 18:21Speaker 1: has offset language in his contract. So if he gets
- 18:23Speaker 1: another coaching job, then boom. It decreases what Penn State
- 18:32Speaker 1: owes him. And all I'm saying is nobody wants Mike
- 18:36Speaker 1: Loxley to get fired.
- 18:38Speaker 2: Badder than Penn State does.
- 18:41Speaker 1: Nobody does. Because that's the job he's going to. That's
- 18:45Speaker 1: the job that he's going to take. But Ryan hit
- 18:48Speaker 1: it where we start talking about people need to be nervous.
- 18:51Speaker 1: I believe that there is a Signetti effect in place.
- 18:53Speaker 1: And you're like, gee, guys, what is the Signetti effect?
- 18:57Speaker 1: Indiana didn't just go win this game against Oregon. If
- 19:02Speaker 1: you watched Indiana play last year in those two games
- 19:05Speaker 1: that they lost, which were to Ohio State and to
- 19:08Speaker 1: Notre Dame. They were not in the same class as
- 19:12Speaker 1: those teams, right? They looked like what they were, which
- 19:16Speaker 1: was a feel-good story that got some scheduling breaks because
- 19:21Speaker 1: these big giant conferences is wide variance and who everybody
- 19:24Speaker 1: gets to play. They had some scheduling breaks. It got
- 19:28Speaker 1: them into the playoff and they got their asses kicked.
- 19:31Speaker 2: Okay, right? They went up to Oregon and they were
- 19:38Speaker 2: on par. with them. Guys, I'm talking about the Indiana Hoosiers.
- 19:47Speaker 4: Yeah, them.
- 19:49Speaker 3: Went to Odson, which is, you know, one of the
- 19:53Speaker 3: toughest places to play. And they had won like 25
- 19:56Speaker 3: straight games there or something. And they were, they looked
- 20:00Speaker 3: like the same football team.
- 20:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 20:01Speaker 3: It was not a gimmicky win by any stretch. Like,
- 20:05Speaker 3: they might have had the better quarterback and they might
- 20:06Speaker 3: have had the better offensive and defensive lines.
- 20:08Speaker 1: And by the way, this is one of those long
- 20:10Speaker 1: flight games. And I do think there's legitimacy to that
- 20:12Speaker 1: when people bring it up. One of those long flight games.
- 20:15Speaker 3: Especially flying out of Bloomington. Yes.
- 20:18Speaker 1: They're playing this on the road and they went in
- 20:22Speaker 1: there and they punched them boys in the mouth. I
- 20:26Speaker 1: remember in 2006 in.
- 20:29Speaker 2: The ACC, Wake Forest won the conference.
- 20:35Speaker 4: Okay.
- 20:35Speaker 1: Okay.
- 20:38Speaker 2: About half the.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Conference turned over their coaches between that season and the
- 20:43Speaker 1: next one. Because when Wake Forest, by far the smallest
- 20:46Speaker 1: school in the conference, with actual real live academic stuff
- 20:51Speaker 1: with their football team, if they could win the ACC,
- 20:56Speaker 1: nobody had any excuses. If you look at what Duke
- 20:59Speaker 1: football has become in the last 20 years, this is
- 21:03Speaker 1: after Wake Forest won because suddenly, Duke football.
- 21:07Speaker 2: Had no excuses.
- 21:08Speaker 1: Nobody has any excuses after Indiana gets to where they are.
- 21:14Speaker 1: So we were looking at the standings to the Big
- 21:16Speaker 1: Ten before this year. And before the show started, Luke Fickle, 0-3.
- 21:21Speaker 1: Jeff Brom at Purdue, 0-3. Greg Sciano at Rutgers, 0-3.
- 21:27Speaker 1: Jonathan Smith at Michigan State, 0-3. All of you must
- 21:32Speaker 1: be shaking in your boots right now. Because you have
- 21:36Speaker 1: no excuse. And don't think for a second that that
- 21:40Speaker 1: did not offer some contribution to where James Franklin is
- 21:46Speaker 1: right now and where it is that he's going to be.
- 21:50Speaker 1: The only question for Penn State is, you can get different.
- 21:55Speaker 1: And I understand why you want different. I do not
- 22:00Speaker 1: know how much better you were going to get. I
- 22:05Speaker 1: don't know if better is possible. Do not forget, James
- 22:09Speaker 1: Franklin also won at Vanderbilt.
- 22:13Speaker 4: Right?
- 22:15Speaker 1: Where he is bad at coaching is in ways that
- 22:19Speaker 1: you can't be bad and that people saw on television.
- 22:22Speaker 2: And by the way, Ryan, did you know that Northwestern
- 22:27Speaker 2: is actually 4-2?
- 22:28Speaker 3: No, but here's the thing. That's one of the great
- 22:31Speaker 3: things about college football is... no matter what your record is,
- 22:35Speaker 3: you're still your program.
- 22:37Speaker 4: Yes.
- 22:37Speaker 3: There are four and two.
- 22:39Speaker 2: You're still Northwestern. Those runs for Duke, Sylvester Krug was
- 22:44Speaker 2: getting everybody honored in the SEC.
- 22:47Speaker 1: But also, those four are over Western Illinois, the old UCLA,
- 22:54Speaker 1: whom they only beat by three points. Or it may
- 22:56Speaker 1: have been like, yeah, I think it's the old UCLA.
- 22:58Speaker 1: They only beat by three points. Louisiana Monroe lost.
- 23:03Speaker 2: And now this one. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah.
- 23:09Speaker 2: That wasn't going to be that still. They decided it
- 23:12Speaker 2: didn't feel good no more, man. You understand what I'm saying? Like,
- 23:17Speaker 2: it didn't feel good anymore. And once it doesn't feel good,
- 23:23Speaker 2: people make changes.
- 23:23Speaker 1: And what is or is not about feeling good in
- 23:26Speaker 1: college sports, it really varies from school to school. So
- 23:29Speaker 1: they reached the point where they just wanted something different.
- 23:36Speaker 2: I just know, if you set $ 50.
- 23:39Speaker 1: Million on fire, firing your coach, who has won a
- 23:46Speaker 1: lot of games, even if they weren't always the right ones,
- 23:52Speaker 1: you better nail the next hire.
- 23:58Speaker 2: I mean, nailed. the next hire.
- 24:01Speaker 1: And by the way, in order for you to nail
- 24:03Speaker 1: the next hire, it's definitely going to cost you eight
- 24:07Speaker 1: figures to get whoever that coach is to be in
- 24:11Speaker 1: line with you yourselves believe that your program is. You
- 24:15Speaker 1: are not in a position where you have, I think,
- 24:18Speaker 1: the luxury to do what most people should do under
- 24:21Speaker 1: circumstances like that at programs like these, which is to
- 24:24Speaker 1: find the young up-and-comer who can have that job for
- 24:28Speaker 1: 20 years. I have long contended that In the history
- 24:31Speaker 1: of this sport, very few have been better at hiring
- 24:33Speaker 1: coaches than Oklahoma. And when Oklahoma has gotten it right
- 24:36Speaker 1: is you get a coach in the 30s and you
- 24:38Speaker 1: ride that thing out.
- 24:39Speaker 2: Like, you can go look all over, man.
- 24:41Speaker 1: That's the formula to trying to get it right is
- 24:44Speaker 1: to find the guy that's young and in his mid-30s
- 24:47Speaker 1: or early 40s and that be your guy. Except those
- 24:50Speaker 1: guys typically need a couple years to get their foot in.
- 24:53Speaker 1: Ain't no time for that, clearly, with this job.
- 24:57Speaker 4: Right?
- 24:58Speaker 2: It's a tricky recruiting job because... They call it that
- 25:05Speaker 2: pistol tucky. You know what I mean? I wouldn't want
- 25:12Speaker 2: to go there. The glory days of this program.
- 25:16Speaker 1: They haven't won a national championship in 40 years.
- 25:19Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 25:20Speaker 1: Like what Penn State means to people my age, I
- 25:22Speaker 1: don't think it's necessarily the same as it means to
- 25:23Speaker 1: like young people.
- 25:26Speaker 2: This is.
- 25:28Speaker 1: And by the way, you try to come up with
- 25:29Speaker 1: money and you just spent out $ 50 million to fire
- 25:32Speaker 1: the coach.
- 25:33Speaker 2: Like you have to get this right. And a big
- 25:34Speaker 2: part of why you have to get this right is
- 25:36Speaker 2: you can't get it wrong.
- 25:37Speaker 1: Because if you do get it wrong, you can't afford
- 25:40Speaker 1: to fire this next guy.
- 25:42Speaker 2: Like you ain't just gonna be able to go past
- 25:44Speaker 2: the hat.
- 25:44Speaker 1: And get another $ 50 million in order to get this done.
- 25:48Speaker 2: And they did it because the vibes were that bad.
- 25:53Speaker 2: Good gracious.
- 25:54Speaker 1: We might talk about this more later in the week.
- 25:56Speaker 1: I got to move on. Otherwise, this show be three hours. Wow, Ryan,
- 26:05Speaker 1: was that 25 minutes?
- 26:07Speaker 3: Sure was. Sorry.
- 26:09Speaker 2: Didn't mean to do all that.
- 26:11Speaker 3: We just got started.
- 26:13Speaker 2: We really did.
- 26:14Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 26:15Speaker 2: We really did.
- 26:17Speaker 1: NFL action this weekend. It's unfortunate what happened with my
- 26:19Speaker 1: Detroit Lions. I didn't go over to my buddy Nick's
- 26:22Speaker 1: house to watch because I don't go over there for
- 26:23Speaker 1: night games because I'm old and I'd like to have
- 26:25Speaker 1: the luxury of falling asleep on the couch if it
- 26:28Speaker 1: comes down to it. And, you know, I really feel
- 26:30Speaker 1: like the refs were being a little bit petty. You know,
- 26:34Speaker 1: taking away a little touchdown on the wonderful trick play
- 26:37Speaker 1: early to start the game. But it's not a big deal, honestly,
- 26:40Speaker 1: that the Lions lost that because I just think the
- 26:42Speaker 1: Chiefs they're going to be just.
- 26:46Speaker 2: Fine, right? I think the ultimate moral of the story
- 26:49Speaker 2: here is they're going to be just fine.
- 26:51Speaker 3: If Patrick Mahomes is completing 75% of his passes for
- 26:55Speaker 3: about eight yards in an attempt, they're going to be fine.
- 26:57Speaker 3: And then Rasheed Rice comes back.
- 26:58Speaker 2: And they're getting the guys back.
- 27:01Speaker 1: What's his name? Xavier Worthy is out there doing it, right?
- 27:05Speaker 1: He ran into Travis Kelsey and that hurt real bad,
- 27:07Speaker 1: but they seem to be shaking that off.
- 27:09Speaker 3: And they have a real chance for a get-right spot
- 27:12Speaker 3: next week because they play the Raiders, who are Bad.
- 27:15Speaker 2: They are Chiefs.
- 27:16Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:17Speaker 2: They are Chiefs. But no, no, no. The Chiefs have
- 27:20Speaker 2: pulled this together.
- 27:21Speaker 1: It is the Ravens that are the ones who have
- 27:23Speaker 1: gone off the cliff. But the Chiefs have pulled this together.
- 27:27Speaker 1: That is interesting to know. That is good to see
- 27:30Speaker 1: all of these things. A couple of things happened yesterday
- 27:33Speaker 1: that I found to be interesting. I would typically like
- 27:38Speaker 1: to start with the football part, right? You know, before
- 27:42Speaker 1: we get to the things that are just a little
- 27:44Speaker 1: bit messy.
- 27:46Speaker 2: So, okay, we could do that.
- 27:48Speaker 1: I don't know how many of you guys watch the
- 27:50Speaker 1: 49ers and the Bucs. I watched the 49ers and the Bucs.
- 27:54Speaker 1: And I went into this game between the 49ers and
- 27:57Speaker 1: the Bucs. And my question was, are either of these
- 28:02Speaker 1: teams really good?
- 28:04Speaker 2: Because they've been doing a lot.
- 28:05Speaker 1: Of squeaking by and I had no answer for whether
- 28:09Speaker 1: or not these teams were good. And then I watched
- 28:12Speaker 1: them play each other and they looked like they were
- 28:15Speaker 1: as good as each other, which gave me no answer
- 28:20Speaker 1: in terms of how.
- 28:20Speaker 2: Good they were as team.
- 28:22Speaker 1: I will say though, as long standing, long established Baker
- 28:28Speaker 1: Mayfield skeptic, I kind of need to abandon that position. Also, Ryan,
- 28:34Speaker 1: I watched the Seahawks play the Jaguars earlier, and Sam
- 28:38Speaker 1: Darnold is also making it difficult for me to remain.
- 28:41Speaker 2: On my square about these guys.
- 28:44Speaker 3: I mean, at least Sam Darnold has Jackson, Smith, and Jigba,
- 28:47Speaker 3: who's having one of the better receiving seasons in the
- 28:51Speaker 3: NFL through six weeks.
- 28:52Speaker 1: Yes.
- 28:53Speaker 3: Every one of Baker's receivers gets hurt, and he's still
- 28:56Speaker 3: out there.
- 28:57Speaker 1: Chucking the ball he is but you know what though
- 28:58Speaker 1: i want to give some credit to these receivers because
- 29:01Speaker 1: baker's not throwing them open right these dudes are running
- 29:04Speaker 1: they were running out there yesterday by themselves because san
- 29:06Speaker 1: francisco as is their want is starting to fall apart
- 29:10Speaker 1: physically again that was another part about what's happening with
- 29:12Speaker 1: the lions is and this seems to be happening to
- 29:13Speaker 1: them every year too this super physical style of play
- 29:17Speaker 1: and then you guys are hurt Yeah.
- 29:19Speaker 3: It's all good to be, you know, physical and stuff
- 29:22Speaker 3: until you don't have any more safeties.
- 29:24Speaker 1: Well, the line between the hammer and the nail is, like,
- 29:27Speaker 1: it's really narrow in the way that these things go.
- 29:30Speaker 2: But Baker's getting it. He is getting it done.
- 29:34Speaker 1: He looked like college Baker Mayfield. And for those of
- 29:38Speaker 1: you who don't remember what that was... I want to
- 29:40Speaker 1: be very clear with you about something.
- 29:42Speaker 2: He was that guy.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And the big part of him being that guy was
- 29:47Speaker 1: he was as accurate as any.
- 29:48Speaker 3: College quarterback I've ever seen.
- 29:50Speaker 2: Say it again.
- 29:51Speaker 3: We'll take prime Drew Brees.
- 29:52Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 29:53Speaker 3: Like has the accuracy, but also could chuck the ball
- 29:56Speaker 3: over the top.
- 29:57Speaker 2: With more mobility.
- 29:58Speaker 7: Right.
- 29:58Speaker 1: Like a better ability to get outside the pocket. Like
- 30:01Speaker 1: he wasn't Michael Vick.
- 30:03Speaker 2: Right. But he could do enough to get it done.
- 30:05Speaker 1: And when he got to the league, I always thought
- 30:07Speaker 1: that he had like a college level of athleticism to
- 30:09Speaker 1: do that stuff. but not enough to really get it
- 30:11Speaker 1: done in the NFL. And no, I mean, right now
- 30:14Speaker 1: he looks like that guy. And look, Godwin's hurt. Mike
- 30:18Speaker 1: Evans is hurt. The new Ohio State receiver, I can't
- 30:21Speaker 1: even use their names anymore. Abuka, I believe, is his name.
- 30:25Speaker 2: He's hurt. And he was throwing it to a.
- 30:28Speaker 1: Guy that pre-draft measurable was 154 pounds. Bo Nix's daddy
- 30:34Speaker 1: adopted him when they was in high school. And he
- 30:36Speaker 1: was a seventh round pick. Like, He's doing it. I
- 30:41Speaker 1: don't think there's any way around that. But I'm going
- 30:43Speaker 1: to tell you right now, if they're the team that
- 30:46Speaker 1: looks like they're going to wind up with the best
- 30:48Speaker 1: record in the NFC, that bodes well for my Detroit
- 30:52Speaker 1: Lions because I just don't think they got it. Something
- 30:56Speaker 1: else also that happened that we ain't really have a
- 30:57Speaker 1: chance to talk about because it happened after we did
- 31:00Speaker 1: our Friday show. But after the Eagles lost to the
- 31:07Speaker 1: Giants and Buddy I don't know how to explain this
- 31:11Speaker 1: here to you, but the local Caucasian population is really
- 31:16Speaker 1: excited about this Jackson Dart cam scatter bowl sort of thing.
- 31:20Speaker 2: Like they going to be on Saturday night live.
- 31:22Speaker 1: I don't think you understand if they can both just
- 31:24Speaker 1: be a little bit competent, just ride it out for
- 31:26Speaker 1: the rest of the year.
- 31:27Speaker 2: I don't think you understand how much money them boys
- 31:29Speaker 2: go make.
- 31:30Speaker 1: They like a comedy team, but they also, you know,
- 31:34Speaker 1: get Jackson Dart wear a chain and be dancing and
- 31:37Speaker 1: scatter bowl play running back.
- 31:38Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Like, You hear me. But anyway,
- 31:45Speaker 2: they came to A.J.
- 31:46Speaker 1: Brown and they asked him about that players only meeting
- 31:48Speaker 1: that the Eagles had.
- 31:49Speaker 2: And A.J. Brown was like, I don't recall. I don't
- 31:52Speaker 2: recall no players only meeting.
- 31:56Speaker 3: He basically played the fifth.
- 31:58Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 31:58Speaker 1: But then he explained it and was like, it wasn't
- 32:00Speaker 1: a meeting. We just talked in the parking lot. I
- 32:04Speaker 1: gained a lot of respect for AJ Brown, by the way,
- 32:07Speaker 1: in that moment, because he tried to be cool about it.
- 32:09Speaker 1: And then everybody called him a liar. And he had
- 32:12Speaker 1: to be like, dog, it wasn't no meat. He just
- 32:14Speaker 1: talked to the parking lot.
- 32:14Speaker 3: What I like about AJ Brown is he has made
- 32:17Speaker 3: his position clear. The exact, he has never changed his
- 32:20Speaker 3: position on this. All he wants is the, is the ball.
- 32:24Speaker 2: Even if not the ball, it can't be what it is.
- 32:27Speaker 3: Winning, losing, no matter how successful, what do we have
- 32:30Speaker 3: to get better at?
- 32:31Speaker 6: Passing.
- 32:32Speaker 3: Specifically passing to me.
- 32:35Speaker 2: And he's right.
- 32:37Speaker 3: Yeah, he's not wrong.
- 32:38Speaker 2: The big part of it is right. But I do
- 32:39Speaker 2: love that he is.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Not allowing the results to interfere with his beliefs about
- 32:45Speaker 1: the process.
- 32:46Speaker 3: Right.
- 32:47Speaker 2: It is process over results.
- 32:49Speaker 4: Right?
- 32:49Speaker 2: This is what it's supposed to be. It's not what
- 32:51Speaker 2: we're doing. But when he said, nah, dog, all we
- 32:54Speaker 2: did was talk in the parking lot.
- 32:55Speaker 7: Guys.
- 32:57Speaker 1: The Nick Sirianni era of the Eagles is the most
- 33:01Speaker 1: up and down thing that I can possibly think.
- 33:04Speaker 2: Of, okay?
- 33:05Speaker 1: You have had two seasons where they have gone to
- 33:09Speaker 1: a Super Bowl.
- 33:10Speaker 2: You have had a season where they won a Super Bowl.
- 33:12Speaker 2: You have one season with an epic collapse.
- 33:18Speaker 1: And this was after going to the Super Bowl. And
- 33:20Speaker 1: then this year, where nothing seems to feel good. Everything
- 33:25Speaker 1: about them seems to be off. I've never seen a team.
- 33:29Speaker 2: Where this is the way that it goes. And Ryan,
- 33:33Speaker 2: I had forgotten about this. In his first year, through
- 33:39Speaker 2: nine games, they were three and six.
- 33:43Speaker 3: And you have to remember coming off that first year
- 33:45Speaker 3: where he gave the worst opening press.
- 33:47Speaker 2: That did happen.
- 33:48Speaker 3: So like, you're starting with Like legitimately looked like a
- 33:52Speaker 3: deer in headlights. And he's been to two Super Bowls.
- 33:57Speaker 3: And then whatever is happening this season.
- 34:00Speaker 2: What is it with this team? But it can't be
- 34:03Speaker 2: like this all the time.
- 34:04Speaker 3: Right.
- 34:04Speaker 2: Like every year cannot be an adventure. It can't.
- 34:10Speaker 1: And you don't want it where every time somebody talks
- 34:13Speaker 1: in front of a microphone, it feels like anything is possible.
- 34:19Speaker 1: Speaking of which, I have seen many examples of players
- 34:30Speaker 1: getting coaches fired. I cannot think of an example where
- 34:39Speaker 1: I felt like a player got everybody fired, including himself.
- 34:47Speaker 1: by what he said to the media, and he didn't
- 34:52Speaker 1: do it on purpose. I don't know how many times
- 34:58Speaker 1: any of you guys have seen Tua Tungabailoa behind a microphone,
- 35:05Speaker 1: but if there's anybody that needs to learn some lessons
- 35:09Speaker 1: from Shadua Sanders, it's this young man. He need to
- 35:16Speaker 1: get in front of the microphone and just go like this.
- 35:22Speaker 1: He just need to turn into, is it Marcel Marceau?
- 35:27Speaker 2: Is that the, you know what I'm saying? The mind?
- 35:32Speaker 1: He need to get his ass in the box because
- 35:34Speaker 1: him talking is bad news.
- 35:38Speaker 2: After this game, this.
- 35:40Speaker 1: Man told everybody, and they lost to the Chargers. By
- 35:45Speaker 1: the way, a dignified loss, except for the fact that
- 35:47Speaker 1: he turned the ball over three times.
- 35:48Speaker 2: Which he owned, by the way.
- 35:52Speaker 1: Tua got out here talking about how they have players-only meetings,
- 35:56Speaker 1: and people come late to the players-only meetings, and sometimes
- 36:02Speaker 1: they no-show the players-only meetings, and he's like, we need
- 36:05Speaker 1: to decide whether those are mandatory or not, or whatever
- 36:10Speaker 1: it is, and.
- 36:13Speaker 2: Brian, you correct me if I'm wrong, but if the
- 36:15Speaker 2: meetings are players only, ain't he the manager?
- 36:17Speaker 3: He's certainly supposed to be.
- 36:20Speaker 2: Like, aren't these his decisions?
- 36:25Speaker 4: What?
- 36:26Speaker 2: Why did you tell us that?
- 36:29Speaker 3: Tua is learning the very hard lesson is we only
- 36:34Speaker 3: want so much honesty.
- 36:35Speaker 5: Yes.
- 36:36Speaker 3: Yes. Like from his comments about, you know. He clearly
- 36:39Speaker 3: was not over the Tyreek thing all year.
- 36:42Speaker 6: No.
- 36:42Speaker 3: That was clearly bothering him. And then he gets out
- 36:45Speaker 3: and he's basically, yeah, we're not run very well. And
- 36:49Speaker 3: it starts with leadership.
- 36:50Speaker 4: Yes.
- 36:51Speaker 3: Here's the thing.
- 36:52Speaker 2: It starts with leadership. You're talking about one or two people. Yes.
- 36:55Speaker 2: Your boss or three people. Your boss. Your boss's boss. Yourself.
- 37:02Speaker 3: Correct.
- 37:02Speaker 2: And to be fair.
- 37:04Speaker 1: I do think he thinks he's talking a bit about himself.
- 37:09Speaker 1: And on one hand, you give him credit for accountability.
- 37:13Speaker 1: On the other hand, you smack him upside the head
- 37:16Speaker 1: and tell him to be quiet. Everybody has to go.
- 37:20Speaker 1: He just basically said, don't nobody listen to me. Don't
- 37:23Speaker 1: nobody listen to the coach. And it's the GM that
- 37:26Speaker 1: put all these dudes together in the room at one time.
- 37:30Speaker 2: Everybody has to go.
- 37:33Speaker 1: This show is being recorded on Monday morning.
- 37:36Speaker 2: It is currently 844 a.m.
- 37:39Speaker 1: It will not surprise me in the least if by
- 37:43Speaker 1: the time you hear this, the coach and the GM
- 37:46Speaker 1: are gone and they tell Tua that his hip is
- 37:49Speaker 1: too bad to play because I don't think he.
- 37:51Speaker 2: Could come back next year.
- 37:52Speaker 4: He can't.
- 37:54Speaker 2: It can't be this. It can't sound. It can't.
- 37:59Speaker 1: Feel like this man this is what I've been trying
- 38:04Speaker 1: to explain if you're not gonna be good enough you
- 38:08Speaker 1: gotta at least make it not feel terrible this is
- 38:12Speaker 1: what we thought was going on at least with Kevin
- 38:14Speaker 1: Stefanski right like I felt like with the Browns the
- 38:17Speaker 1: team was bad but everybody kind of understood the trick
- 38:19Speaker 1: bag they were in and I thought this Stefanski had
- 38:21Speaker 1: done a good job of making it not feel At least,
- 38:23Speaker 1: I mean, I guess you're a Browns fan.
- 38:25Speaker 2: It don't never feel good.
- 38:26Speaker 1: But I thought he had done a decent job of
- 38:28Speaker 1: not making it feel so abjectly terrible. And remember, we
- 38:30Speaker 1: were here and we were talking about on this show,
- 38:33Speaker 1: I was surprised that there had not been no heat
- 38:34Speaker 1: put on his seat. And Ryan, I owe that man
- 38:36Speaker 1: an apology because apparently he's getting.
- 38:38Speaker 2: A little toasty.
- 38:39Speaker 3: That's another person who might be, by the time you
- 38:41Speaker 3: hear this, might not have a job.
- 38:43Speaker 1: Yo, everything just feels tight, man. I have a question
- 38:48Speaker 1: for you. And we ain't going to make no social
- 38:49Speaker 1: video out of this because, you know, it could get weird.
- 38:51Speaker 1: But I'm asking this sincerely. You wonder if the times
- 38:55Speaker 1: that we live in are making everybody a little antsy
- 38:57Speaker 1: and making them do this stuff. Yes.
- 39:00Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 39:01Speaker 3: The short answer is do I think that lack of
- 39:06Speaker 3: attention spans and people getting bad news fed to them
- 39:09Speaker 3: all the time and wanting to– yes. The short answer
- 39:13Speaker 3: is absolutely.
- 39:14Speaker 5: Yo, like this is– everything– Stefanski, when I was saying that,
- 39:20Speaker 5: I wasn't saying he should be fired.
- 39:22Speaker 2: I haven't heard anything about it, but what the hell
- 39:25Speaker 2: is he supposed to do? Like, like....
- 39:32Speaker 1: I have no answers in so many places but with
- 39:34Speaker 1: mcdaniel it's not supposed to look like this it's not
- 39:38Speaker 1: supposed to feel like this i think my man rod
- 39:41Speaker 1: said he looks shorter at every press conference now every
- 39:45Speaker 1: time you get up there you.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Look shorter shorter and smaller and yeah he.
- 39:50Speaker 1: Was already up against the fact that they don't look
- 39:52Speaker 1: like no football coach.
- 39:54Speaker 3: It's tough.
- 39:55Speaker 2: Whether it's right or wrong.
- 39:56Speaker 3: And let's be honest, he's out of here going one
- 39:59Speaker 3: in five in Capri's.
- 40:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 40:01Speaker 2: This is what I'm saying. Like he doesn't, you know
- 40:05Speaker 2: what that looks like? The coach of a one in
- 40:07Speaker 2: five football team.
- 40:09Speaker 3: If you want to look like a, you know, uh,
- 40:12Speaker 3: like a back-end engineer at one of these tech firms.
- 40:14Speaker 3: That's great. But you got to, you know, be around 500.
- 40:17Speaker 6: Yeah, no, no, no.
- 40:19Speaker 1: They've just completely ruined the vibe. Like, can you imagine
- 40:21Speaker 1: being on that team?
- 40:24Speaker 6: No.
- 40:25Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 40:25Speaker 1: Like, why would you feel like we about to win
- 40:28Speaker 1: any games right now? Like, I felt good for the
- 40:31Speaker 1: Cardinals that the Cardinals, because I told you, I wouldn't
- 40:33Speaker 1: have been surprised if their season fell apart after that
- 40:35Speaker 1: thing happened with Gannon.
- 40:37Speaker 2: It did not.
- 40:38Speaker 1: Right.
- 40:38Speaker 2: Right. Like they they pulled that together.
- 40:40Speaker 1: They did not win the game against the Colts, but
- 40:42Speaker 1: they played like a team that still had it together.
- 40:45Speaker 1: The Ravens look like a team that's done. Lamar Jackson,
- 40:47Speaker 1: no Lamar Jackson. That's not the point. They look like
- 40:50Speaker 1: a team that is cooked. But nobody and I repeat,
- 40:54Speaker 1: nobody look like they down bad quite like the Dolphins are.
- 40:58Speaker 2: Yikes.
- 41:05Speaker 1: Football is back and so is your shot at big wins.

- 42:32Speaker 3: couple of quick stories from the weekend. After we recorded
- 42:36Speaker 3: Friday's show, LeBron James is going to be out three
- 42:39Speaker 3: to four weeks with sciatica. There are reports from David Miniman.
- 42:43Speaker 3: He is monitoring the Lakers situation while he misses the
- 42:46Speaker 3: beginning of the year. Bo, what are your thoughts?
- 42:49Speaker 2: First of all, things I learned.
- 42:52Speaker 1: It is the sciatic nerve and sciatica is an aggravation
- 42:57Speaker 1: of the sciatic nerve. where I thought that sciatica was
- 43:00Speaker 1: simply people mispronouncing sciatica.
- 43:02Speaker 2: That is number one.
- 43:05Speaker 3: Whenever a player gets an injury you've never heard of,
- 43:08Speaker 3: it's not a good sign.
- 43:09Speaker 2: Yes. Well, see, number two, that's the thing. I have
- 43:11Speaker 2: heard of sciatica.
- 43:14Speaker 1: My father had sciatica when I was younger, but he
- 43:19Speaker 1: was 55.
- 43:24Speaker 2: Now, maybe young people suffer from sciatica. However, this has
- 43:30Speaker 2: got a whiff of DNP old.
- 43:33Speaker 1: This feels like DNP old for LeBron.
- 43:39Speaker 2: Number three, Ryan Barry didn't say the best part.
- 43:45Speaker 1: Dave McMenamin came out with a report, and I like Dave,
- 43:50Speaker 1: but you need to understand that when Dave covered the
- 43:52Speaker 1: Cleveland Cavaliers, LeBron had three guys in the media that
- 43:56Speaker 1: he referred to as his three wives. I think it
- 43:59Speaker 1: was McMiniman, Chris Haynes, and Joe Varden. That is no
- 44:02Speaker 1: shade to those guys, but LeBron said that out loud
- 44:06Speaker 1: in front of people.
- 44:08Speaker 3: That was 10 years ago, and McMiniman moved his life
- 44:11Speaker 3: from Cleveland to Los Angeles, and that was eight years ago.
- 44:14Speaker 1: Yeah, it's more like McManaman moved his life from Los
- 44:16Speaker 1: Angeles to Cleveland. And then thank God he didn't have
- 44:21Speaker 1: to do that anymore. But anyway, I'm just saying Dave
- 44:24Speaker 1: McManaman is a reporter who has a standing relationship with LeBron.
- 44:30Speaker 4: Okay.
- 44:31Speaker 1: McManaman comes out and says, hey, man, you got to wonder, right,
- 44:36Speaker 1: if LeBron's not going to be out with this sciatica
- 44:39Speaker 1: and watching the Lakers, seeing how they perform, and then
- 44:43Speaker 1: making decisions.
- 44:44Speaker 2: About what he's going to do.
- 44:51Speaker 5: You don't run nothing no more, man. He going to
- 44:58Speaker 5: decide if he wants to go somewhere else. You going
- 45:00Speaker 5: to wind up getting traded to Milwaukee.
- 45:04Speaker 2: Like, what is.
- 45:06Speaker 1: Why are you doing this? This isn't... I don't know
- 45:11Speaker 1: why he doesn't see.
- 45:12Speaker 2: And I mean... Look, we all got different interpretations of
- 45:15Speaker 2: what we want to do or whatever.
- 45:16Speaker 1: But the only thing LeBron James needs to be thinking about,
- 45:19Speaker 1: as far as I'm concerned, is retiring as a Los
- 45:21Speaker 1: Angeles Laker.
- 45:22Speaker 5: Right.
- 45:23Speaker 1: And on one hand, I admire.
- 45:26Speaker 2: Athletes who don't care about going outside.
- 45:30Speaker 6: Right.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Like you are a competitor and you just want to
- 45:33Speaker 1: keep going until you can't. And you are willing to
- 45:36Speaker 1: look bad. Like you are not embarrassed by being out
- 45:39Speaker 1: here looking bad. On one hand, I get that. And
- 45:41Speaker 1: there is truly a respect to be had for it.
- 45:45Speaker 1: But the only way for a man in LeBron's position
- 45:47Speaker 1: to guarantee that he don't go out saying is to
- 45:50Speaker 1: announce before a season, you go and do your tour
- 45:52Speaker 1: and just go on about your business.
- 45:54Speaker 3: Right.
- 45:56Speaker 2: This approach is not the way to wind down your career.
- 45:59Speaker 2: Like I don't.
- 46:00Speaker 1: I don't think this is going to play the way
- 46:03Speaker 1: that he wants it to play. That I'm going to
- 46:06Speaker 1: find another team to play for? No, man.
- 46:09Speaker 2: There's nowhere else to go.
- 46:11Speaker 1: The idea to me that there's going to be some
- 46:13Speaker 1: team that's going to give up the world for a
- 46:15Speaker 1: man that's got a sciatica and is going to turn
- 46:20Speaker 1: 41 years old in December and is in his 23rd
- 46:24Speaker 1: year in the NBA. How much are you willing to
- 46:26Speaker 1: give up to pay LeBron James $ 50 million a year?
- 46:29Speaker 3: Especially, and this is not even accounting for how much
- 46:33Speaker 3: harder it is to make these trades now.
- 46:34Speaker 2: Yes.
- 46:36Speaker 3: The rules, like, if you, like, LeBron James is not
- 46:39Speaker 3: going to, let's say, the Charlotte Hornets, right? So it's
- 46:42Speaker 3: teams that, you know, have a better chance to theoretically
- 46:46Speaker 3: win the title than the Lakers and can pull off
- 46:48Speaker 3: a move. And that list is a short list.
- 46:50Speaker 2: Well, he's aged out of defense, number one. And number two.
- 46:57Speaker 1: Part of why Bill Belichick doesn't have a job in
- 46:58Speaker 1: the NFL is that if you were going to bring
- 47:00Speaker 1: Bill Belichick in, you got to turn the whole thing over, right?
- 47:03Speaker 1: Like that's what Carolina did when Bill Belichick was there.
- 47:05Speaker 1: Clearly the terrible results, but you had to be willing
- 47:09Speaker 1: to turn the whole thing over. You don't have to
- 47:10Speaker 1: turn the whole thing over for LeBron, but you're turning
- 47:12Speaker 1: a lot over for LeBron. Like if you, to make
- 47:14Speaker 1: it worth it for you to get LeBron, you got
- 47:16Speaker 1: to have something already going. Can LeBron just fit in.
- 47:20Speaker 2: To whatever it is? These are the things you have
- 47:22Speaker 2: to ask yourself.
- 47:23Speaker 1: Like I don't have the answer for that necessarily, but,
- 47:26Speaker 1: But you have to ask this and putting.
- 47:29Speaker 2: Out the word of maybe I want to go somewhere else. Brother,
- 47:33Speaker 2: they don't care. It is Luca time over there. I
- 47:39Speaker 2: don't think they ever liked you that much in the
- 47:41Speaker 2: first place.
- 47:43Speaker 3: They don't care.
- 47:45Speaker 2: Just put some tussing on it. And hope you get better.
- 47:52Speaker 2: That's that's that's it. That's what you got.
- 47:56Speaker 3: All right. On Friday, a judge dismissed Drake's defamation lawsuit
- 48:01Speaker 3: against UMG and Kendrick Lamar. The judge ruled that Lamar's
- 48:06Speaker 3: lyrics accused Drake and his associates of being certified pedophiles
- 48:10Speaker 3: were non-actual opinion and not considered defamatory. Bo, your thoughts?
- 48:15Speaker 2: The judge basically told him it was a rap battle, fool.
- 48:22Speaker 2: Can this finally be over now? You know, like I've
- 48:26Speaker 2: had enough.
- 48:26Speaker 3: It was a good time.
- 48:27Speaker 2: It was a fun year. It was a great time.
- 48:30Speaker 2: It was a great year. And we are already in
- 48:33Speaker 2: like into month 18. Right now of this. No, no, no, no, no.
- 48:38Speaker 2: It's been real. It's it's please let it be over.
- 48:42Speaker 2: Like for Drake, this is. I don't I don't know.
- 48:47Speaker 2: It's over for him. It's a different kind of over.
- 48:50Speaker 1: Right. That I think we all would have to agree with.
- 48:52Speaker 1: It's a different kind of over. But I will tell
- 48:54Speaker 1: you this. I do miss that beef. And for no
- 48:57Speaker 1: other reason, their rap was really exciting. You know what
- 49:00Speaker 1: gets people excited now? A Mobb Deep album just came out. Now, granted,
- 49:05Speaker 1: maybe that's just the excitement of people my age, right?
- 49:08Speaker 1: Maybe the youngsters have things that they're excited about that
- 49:11Speaker 1: I don't know anything about.
- 49:12Speaker 2: But man, give me something, baby. Give me something.
- 49:17Speaker 4: You know what?
- 49:17Speaker 2: I would take a classic Drake album now.
- 49:20Speaker 3: I think that do you think do you think that's
- 49:22Speaker 3: on the table you think that's.
- 49:23Speaker 1: Over hell no hell no i mean look i just
- 49:27Speaker 1: i just said that i said i'd take one if
- 49:29Speaker 1: we had it.
- 49:30Speaker 3: Talk about some people who are about to turn 40
- 49:31Speaker 3: yeah i don't i.
- 49:33Speaker 1: Don't participate in that behavior that i say he turns
- 49:37Speaker 1: 40 this month next year.
- 49:40Speaker 2: This month, next year. And I just feel like he
- 49:42Speaker 2: has no idea. I can't imagine how lost in the
- 49:45Speaker 2: wilderness he is right now. All right.
- 49:50Speaker 3: And finally, Rolling Stone listed their top 250 songs of
- 49:54Speaker 3: the century so far. Number one, Missy Elliott, Get Your
- 49:58Speaker 3: Freak On. Bo, what'd you think of this list?
- 50:01Speaker 1: I mean, I didn't look at the list, to be honest,
- 50:03Speaker 1: because I knew all I saw was that was number one.
- 50:06Speaker 1: I didn't know people cared that much about that song.
- 50:10Speaker 1: That was what struck me. It's a good song. I
- 50:14Speaker 1: understand its charm and appeal, but also I admit, I
- 50:18Speaker 1: look at Missy Elliott and all the music that Missy
- 50:24Speaker 1: and Timberland Circle did, that circle of people, I view
- 50:29Speaker 1: their music, not everything Timberland did. Things Timberland did for
- 50:32Speaker 1: other people, I view differently than this.
- 50:34Speaker 2: But Missy, Timberland, and Magoo.
- 50:37Speaker 1: I view that music as very particular to the era
- 50:40Speaker 1: that it was in. I don't think of that as enduring, lasting. Like,
- 50:45Speaker 1: Get Your Freak Out is like, oh, something you put
- 50:46Speaker 1: in a commercial. You know what I mean? But I
- 50:49Speaker 1: never looked at that or thought of that as the
- 50:51Speaker 1: kind of music that you put on the top of
- 50:54Speaker 1: a list like this. I just wanted to put this
- 50:56Speaker 1: topic in here so everybody knows and the people who
- 50:59Speaker 1: know me know what I am going to say.
- 51:02Speaker 2: There is no doubt.
- 51:03Speaker 1: For me that the best song of the 21st century,
- 51:08Speaker 1: is the greatest single in the history of rap music,
- 51:13Speaker 1: and it is Outkast's B.O.B., Heartstop.
- 51:18Speaker 3: All right, Bo, we've opened up the voicemail line. Another
- 51:25Speaker 3: couple of good ones. Here's our first.
- 51:28Speaker 7: Hey, Bo, I'm calling from Houston, and I just got
- 51:32Speaker 7: to ask, at what time did you know it was
- 51:35Speaker 7: time to bring it all home? Because I'm looking in
- 51:38Speaker 7: the mirror right now and I'm debating it. Big fan
- 51:41Speaker 7: of the show, man. I appreciate.
- 51:45Speaker 3: It.
- 51:45Speaker 2: Thanks.
- 51:47Speaker 4: All right.
- 51:48Speaker 1: So I was 32 and I was living in North Carolina.
- 51:53Speaker 1: And it was becoming pretty clear to me that my
- 51:56Speaker 1: days were numbered and I should probably come home. I
- 52:00Speaker 1: used to be able to go two weeks in between haircuts.
- 52:03Speaker 1: And then I had to start going one week in
- 52:05Speaker 1: between haircuts because at the temples.
- 52:07Speaker 2: I could really only grow a week's worth.
- 52:11Speaker 7: Right.
- 52:11Speaker 1: And so then we get around it and it wasn't
- 52:13Speaker 1: really like doing the thing.
- 52:16Speaker 2: But you know what? I didn't want to come home.
- 52:20Speaker 2: I wanted to stay out.
- 52:22Speaker 1: I was having a good time because I knew that
- 52:24Speaker 1: once you was home, you couldn't really come back outside.
- 52:27Speaker 2: So I was OK with it.
- 52:29Speaker 1: I fully decided to come home when I moved to
- 52:32Speaker 1: Miami and I realized that I was going to have
- 52:35Speaker 1: to find a new barbershop, which meant that I was
- 52:38Speaker 1: probably going to have to listen to a lot of
- 52:40Speaker 1: really stupid barbershop conversation and that somebody was eventually going
- 52:44Speaker 1: to recognize me from the television and make it even worse.
- 52:47Speaker 1: And so I didn't want to go to the barbershop
- 52:50Speaker 1: no more. So I came home. I also came to
- 52:55Speaker 1: understand that in Miami, there's a good chance that Joe
- 52:59Speaker 1: Barber could be from one of the Miami countries. But
- 53:04Speaker 1: used the N-word as though he was from Miami Gardens.
- 53:10Speaker 1: And I didn't want to participate in that game.
- 53:14Speaker 2: I did not.
- 53:15Speaker 1: Our Latino brothers in Miami is a little loose with it.
- 53:22Speaker 1: When I say our Latino brothers, I don't mean the ones,
- 53:25Speaker 1: like I ain't talking about the white Cubans. I'm talking
- 53:28Speaker 1: about the Puerto Rican, Dominican, Colombian, Venezuelan type situation. Man,
- 53:34Speaker 1: I don't know who told them that they was allowed,
- 53:39Speaker 1: but it was a whole lot of them, which made
- 53:41Speaker 1: it very difficult to just be like, okay, I'm going.
- 53:44Speaker 2: To take this all. Now I'm just not going to
- 53:45Speaker 2: do this. I'm just not going to come to the barbershop.
- 53:48Speaker 3: Yeah, it would be a lot, especially every week. That
- 53:51Speaker 3: transitions very surprisingly well into this next one.
- 53:56Speaker 4: What's good, Bomani? This is JD from Boston. I heard
- 53:59Speaker 4: you were having a homie have a Brian on and
- 54:00Speaker 4: wanted to get y'all thoughts on this thing. So when
- 54:04Speaker 4: I was a shorty, my go-to order at the ice
- 54:07Speaker 4: cream truck was vanilla cone with jimmies. So vanilla, soft
- 54:13Speaker 4: serve ice cream, cone, chocolate sprinkles. That was the order.
- 54:18Speaker 4: You say jimmies in Boston or Massachusetts, folks know what
- 54:21Speaker 4: you're talking about. So as an older man, I got
- 54:24Speaker 4: curious and wondered, what are jimmies? What is the term
- 54:28Speaker 4: derived from? So I spoke to my grandfather about it.
- 54:31Speaker 4: And what he shared with me is that jimmies refer
- 54:35Speaker 4: to black folks. If you think about my order, it's
- 54:39Speaker 4: this white entity, my vanilla ice cream with chocolate sprinkles.
- 54:43Speaker 4: Fast forward, 2025, I go into the ice cream spot.
- 54:47Speaker 4: On the board, chocolate jimmies. So just curious if, you know,
- 54:52Speaker 4: Mahoney Howard has come across this or you've come across
- 54:54Speaker 4: this or, you know, is it just that Boston is
- 54:57Speaker 4: uniquely racist, which it's likely that.
- 55:00Speaker 3: Peace.
- 55:03Speaker 1: Look, I try to be careful about these things. We
- 55:06Speaker 1: will ask Howard about the chocolate jimmies. Ryan might need
- 55:10Speaker 1: you to just send him the voicemail so he could
- 55:12Speaker 1: give his answer.
- 55:13Speaker 3: I'll forward it along.
- 55:15Speaker 1: But if you're asking me, Boston is uniquely racist is
- 55:22Speaker 1: always the odds-on favorite. And I contend Boston is not
- 55:30Speaker 1: necessarily that much more racist than other places, but it
- 55:35Speaker 1: is more aggressively racist than most places, and they are
- 55:39Speaker 1: far more willing to fight.
- 55:41Speaker 3: All right, Bo, here's our last one. Hey, what's up, Bo?
- 55:44Speaker 3: What's up, Ryan? It's CB from Brooklyn.
- 55:48Speaker 6: Something came across my radar this morning that kind of
- 55:50Speaker 6: threw my day off, and it was Dan Wetzel talking
- 55:53Speaker 6: about how John Calipari and others are going to start
- 55:58Speaker 6: getting booster insurance, which as a lifelong college football fan
- 56:03Speaker 6: and just a fan of sports in general, sounds absolutely
- 56:06Speaker 6: insane to me. So the boosters will be able to
- 56:08Speaker 6: get insurance on the NIL deals that they're paying out
- 56:11Speaker 6: to players, et cetera. I believe Lloyd's of London is
- 56:15Speaker 6: backing this. But to me, this kind of sounds like
- 56:18Speaker 6: getting itemized receipts from prostitutes. I thought y'all were in
- 56:21Speaker 6: this for the experience, not for the ability to go back,
- 56:25Speaker 6: get your money back, etc. So would love to hear,
- 56:28Speaker 6: you know, what you think about it. If you think
- 56:30Speaker 6: this is the way things should be going or the quote,
- 56:34Speaker 6: Michael Irvin, we're losing recipes.
- 56:36Speaker 4: Thanks, bro.
- 56:37Speaker 1: Ryan, I think we need to book Dan Wetzel. I
- 56:40Speaker 1: had no idea.
- 56:41Speaker 2: That this existed. And then I look it up and
- 56:44Speaker 2: I'm like, this is the quote from Cal.
- 56:47Speaker 1: What if we had just given him a million dollars
- 56:49Speaker 1: and then he got injured and was lost for the season?
- 56:51Speaker 1: What would the person who gave that million dollars feel?
- 56:54Speaker 1: How would you go back to that person and ask
- 56:56Speaker 1: for more money? So we talk about private equity.
- 57:00Speaker 2: We try.
- 57:00Speaker 4: I am.
- 57:05Speaker 2: Wow. Right now, this is hilarious, so perhaps it could
- 57:09Speaker 2: be fun. But I do love the idea of a
- 57:13Speaker 2: booster trying to come to the player and get his
- 57:15Speaker 2: money back.
- 57:16Speaker 3: Yeah, like a 90-day guarantee. It's a warranty.
- 57:19Speaker 1: But the problem with this to me is the idea
- 57:22Speaker 1: of the booster insurance is interesting.
- 57:24Speaker 2: But what it's also going to require is.
- 57:28Speaker 1: Like some medical invasiveness about the players, right? What are
- 57:35Speaker 1: the terms? How exactly does this work? But what it
- 57:40Speaker 1: is is somebody came up and was like, oh, I
- 57:42Speaker 1: got an idea for something. I can sell people. And
- 57:45Speaker 1: then they came in with, let's see how claimable these
- 57:49Speaker 1: policies are. Good luck trying to get your money back
- 57:55Speaker 1: on your tricking insurance.
- 57:59Speaker 3: From 19-year-old college basketball players.
- 58:01Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Good luck, homie.
- 58:03Speaker 3: I promise you as soon as they get that money,
- 58:05Speaker 3: that money is... I don't know where it's going, but
- 58:07Speaker 3: it's not coming back to you.
- 58:09Speaker 2: Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 58:10Speaker 1: So you think this insurance company is going to be
- 58:13Speaker 1: paying out on these policies?
- 58:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 58:15Speaker 1: Can you imagine how fine the fine print is on this?
- 58:21Speaker 2: Come on.
- 58:23Speaker 1: But hey, ladies and gentlemen, thanks so much for joining
- 58:25Speaker 1: us here on The Right Time. We do this three.
- 58:29Speaker 2: Times a week.
