- 0:00Speaker 1: Lord Mayor Convat Scalas, who joins me in the studio
- 0:02Speaker 1: get icon, good morning.
- 0:04Speaker 2: I can understand why you're running late. There were some
- 0:06Speaker 2: burning issues at the moment.
- 0:08Speaker 1: There certainly are. People are really pretty concerned about these
- 0:10Speaker 1: school counselors. So we will talk more about that throughout
- 0:13Speaker 1: the morning. But Corn first off, we know that there
- 0:18Speaker 1: has been a thirty percent hike in commercial waste face
- 0:21Speaker 1: and concerns have been raised by the Palmerston Council. It
- 0:24Speaker 1: means at the City of Palmerston residents, all their residents
- 0:26Speaker 1: are going to be slugged more on waste collection one
- 0:29Speaker 1: hundred and fifty dollars A torn talk us through why
- 0:32Speaker 1: this decision was made.
- 0:33Speaker 2: Well, the rubbi step we've run at the moment, it's
- 0:36Speaker 2: actually used by three councils Litsfield, Palmerston and Darwin. Unfortunately
- 0:40Speaker 2: the expenses are not shared by the three councils. They
- 0:42Speaker 2: only said by council City of Darwin. In the past
- 0:45Speaker 2: few years we have to spend a lot of money
- 0:47Speaker 2: to bring the rubbistep up to standards and to comply
- 0:50Speaker 2: the requests by EPA, and I think it's unfair that
- 0:53Speaker 2: they eat down rate pairs pay the bills and the
- 0:57Speaker 2: others that not pay their fairs here, so increase, and
- 1:00Speaker 2: that was a reasonable increase for other councils to pay
- 1:04Speaker 2: per ton. It's not very expensive. It might sounds thirty percent,
- 1:08Speaker 2: but if you put the real terms, it's not very expensive.
- 1:11Speaker 2: At the same time, what we ask in asking separate
- 1:14Speaker 2: your rabbish, don't mix green waste with commercial with the
- 1:18Speaker 2: domestic waste, because then makes very complicated. We can't really
- 1:22Speaker 2: charge you separately, so we charge your bulk.
- 1:25Speaker 1: So there been a bit more like kind of advanced
- 1:28Speaker 1: notification that it was going to go up in that
- 1:31Speaker 1: sense for them, so that they could maybe have made
- 1:33Speaker 1: some changes to accommodize.
- 1:34Speaker 2: Well, my understanding is that the City of Parments is
- 1:37Speaker 2: already charging more than what they pay their rate payers.
- 1:40Speaker 2: And my understanding is they've got a rubbish reserve already
- 1:43Speaker 2: in place with quite a few million dollars in it.
- 1:45Speaker 3: So obviously we didn't charge a lot if they can
- 1:47Speaker 3: make a reserve.
- 1:48Speaker 2: But again, when EPA turns up to our door steps,
- 1:51Speaker 2: they don't give us previous notification.
- 1:53Speaker 3: They turn up and says you have to fix that.
- 1:56Speaker 2: You have to fix that because this Rubbi is step
- 1:57Speaker 2: operating for the past thirty forty years and we actually
- 2:01Speaker 2: pay up paid now the problems of the past. So
- 2:04Speaker 2: you have to also to remember that our proposals going
- 2:07Speaker 2: out for three weeks for public comments. City of Parmastore
- 2:10Speaker 2: already written to us about it, expressive concern and certain
- 2:14Speaker 2: we'll respond to their consents.
- 2:15Speaker 1: In writing, Corn, are you starting a rubbish war with
- 2:18Speaker 1: the Palmerston Council here?
- 2:19Speaker 2: No, I'm just asking to pay the first year. I
- 2:22Speaker 2: don't think that the people in Waguri or Wulagi or
- 2:25Speaker 2: Tiwi would be very pleased to subsidize Palmerston.
- 2:29Speaker 1: Now let's move along. I'm keen to see if there's
- 2:31Speaker 1: any updates on the r V park Bandilla Beach that
- 2:34Speaker 1: you and I had spoken about a little while ago.
- 2:36Speaker 3: Where's it all, ash, Look?
- 2:38Speaker 2: It closed on Friday and I just could make clear
- 2:40Speaker 2: because there's a lot of misinformation about the Bandilla. First
- 2:43Speaker 2: of all, Bandila dow Will had the master plan in place.
- 2:47Speaker 2: They wanted to a master plan and we wanted to
- 2:49Speaker 2: put a dog park. The government kept to the party
- 2:52Speaker 2: and it says, look, how about we give you some
- 2:53Speaker 2: money to actually beautify the place. Which that's a great idea.
- 2:56Speaker 2: Now this money there are in the budget for next year,
- 2:59Speaker 2: we received any money from the government yet, because you
- 3:02Speaker 2: don't receive money from the next year's budget and hopefully
- 3:05Speaker 2: well receive three three and a half million dollars. Because
- 3:08Speaker 2: of that proposal by the government, we put the dog
- 3:11Speaker 2: pack on hold, so much point of putting a pack
- 3:13Speaker 2: there if we have digged out later. We also decided
- 3:16Speaker 2: that if we're going to actually get rid of get
- 3:18Speaker 2: rid of the reef ruff in Bandilla, we activated the
- 3:21Speaker 2: best way to activate, do a trial. Bring some harvest
- 3:24Speaker 2: ten or fifteen harvest there temporarily to park because there
- 3:28Speaker 2: are facilities and the moment the people lights traffic, it's
- 3:32Speaker 2: in the area. The people that cause the problems now
- 3:34Speaker 2: currently they will move away, they go somewhere else.
- 3:37Speaker 3: We put that to the public. We expect their response.
- 3:40Speaker 2: I know the local member has encouraged the public of
- 3:44Speaker 2: his electorate to oppose it.
- 3:46Speaker 3: That's his pos Yes, well, that's something you have to
- 3:51Speaker 3: ask bread, not me.
- 3:52Speaker 1: So you're saying that he's actively gone out and done as.
- 3:55Speaker 2: Yes, and I believe now that people follow his advice
- 3:58Speaker 2: and opposing You know, he's done that I saw the
- 4:01Speaker 2: Listleship put in it in the leaflets. Yes, I mean
- 4:05Speaker 2: it's surprising because we're trying to do something to work
- 4:08Speaker 2: together with the government to get rid of the ref
- 4:10Speaker 2: ruff and that's a good proposal. It's not creating new
- 4:13Speaker 2: caravan park. It's just bringing ten or fifteen Harvis on
- 4:17Speaker 2: a trial base to see how it operates. And at
- 4:20Speaker 2: the same time you have a beneficiary.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Well, we'll see if we can get brands on the
- 4:24Speaker 1: show and find out a bit more so a little
- 4:26Speaker 1: bit of a while we sit.
- 4:27Speaker 2: So we went to see the results the outcome. When
- 4:30Speaker 2: we get the outcome, I will set and let you know.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Corn moving along. Just finally, I know you've got an
- 4:34Speaker 1: event coming up that you are keen to tell us about.
- 4:36Speaker 2: What is us A big event that's actually the down
- 4:39Speaker 2: in the National Drug Boat Festival to three.
- 4:42Speaker 3: It's going to be a big event. We've caught significant.
- 4:46Speaker 2: Number of people from Southeast Asia's coming to participate. We've
- 4:49Speaker 2: got pit from them, passa pit from Kupang, Prick from Delhi,
- 4:53Speaker 2: people from Quanzo, sen Jen and Shintau. It's not only
- 4:57Speaker 2: to be a competition, but the dragon Boat, which a
- 4:59Speaker 2: big thing for Asian countries, but also is going to
- 5:02Speaker 2: be a trade show afterwards, many many local businesses and
- 5:07Speaker 2: overseas business participating. We want to use our position with
- 5:11Speaker 2: a friendly and sister cities in Asia to promote Darwin
- 5:15Speaker 2: as a place to do business or to come and
- 5:17Speaker 2: do business here. The feed staff I got from the
- 5:20Speaker 2: visit we did in then Passa. A lot of business
- 5:23Speaker 2: have benefited by other hiring stuff for their businesses or
- 5:27Speaker 2: for the agricultural sector.
- 5:28Speaker 3: So it looks that it works and we want to continue.
- 5:31Speaker 1: Well con no doubt. We'll talk more about that closer
- 5:34Speaker 1: to the dice. Thank you as always for your time
- 5:36Speaker 1: this morning. Thank you
