- 1:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: continue writing to me at

- 1:41Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: donnajodhan@gmail.com and keep on listening.
- 1:47Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You never know what you might
- 1:50Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: come across in any of my podcasts and we go from there.
- 1:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: All right, so let me start off today with
- 2:01Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: one of my favorite quotes.
- 2:06Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And
- 2:08Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: here goes:
- 2:10Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Speak in such a way that others love to listen to you,
- 2:16Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and listen in such a way that others love to speak to you.
- 2:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Unfortunately, this author is unknown.
- 2:27Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Now let's go to my word game,
- 2:30Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: one of my favorite segments of my podcast.
- 2:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 2:36Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Many times advocates have to choose between being complacent or
- 2:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: being active.
- 2:45Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I will tell you that being complacent in my books
- 2:51Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: doesn't happen very often.
- 2:54Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The minute that one is complacent,
- 2:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: it means that they choose to ignore.
- 3:00Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: They choose to not care.
- 3:04Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: They choose simply to sit there and take it all in.
- 3:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Whereas on the flip side of the coin, you have active.
- 3:13Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So complacent versus active.
- 3:16Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Active is when you decide to do something about something.
- 3:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So complacent versus active.
- 3:25Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: There are complacent advocates who really believe that being complacent is a
- 3:32Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: way or a means of support. I don't fully agree.
- 3:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: If you're complacent,
- 3:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I don't think there's much room for you to become involved in advocacy.
- 3:46Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Whereas if you become active, there is room for you.
- 3:51Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So let's think about it, complacent versus active.
- 3:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: All right.
- 3:58Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Here's the other two terms I'd like you to think of for today.
- 4:03Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: In kind or unkind.
- 4:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Do you do something to be kind?
- 4:11Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: As they say,
- 4:11Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: it's in kind that you are performing some action or doing something.
- 4:19Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Or unkind means that, you know,
- 4:23Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: it's being viewed that you're not being kind, you're being unkind.
- 4:29Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I wonder if
- 4:32Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: the thought of being cruel to be kind could be applied to these two terms.
- 4:38Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You're being cruel to be kind when it is unkind.
- 4:44Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Is that so? What do you think?
- 4:47Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Or in kind is if you're doing it because you honestly believe that it is a kind
- 4:53Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: gesture.
- 4:55Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Send me your thoughts to donnajodhan@gmail.com.
- 5:02Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Now we're going to move into the three stories of the month that our team has
- 5:08Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: chosen for me to share with you,
- 5:12Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and here's the first story.
- 5:18Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: A parent says that her son, little Timmy, is vision impaired.
- 5:24Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Why is she saying this?
- 5:30Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emily told the
- 5:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: agents at the desk that her little boy,
- 5:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: not Timmy, Emil, was vision impaired.
- 5:43Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emily wrote this
- 5:46Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: story and sent it to us, okay?
- 5:50Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And she did so because she wanted to get a special rate for her little boy,
- 5:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emil.
- 6:01Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emil's friends noticed what was going on.
- 6:05Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: They noticed that Emily was telling the customer agent at the desk
- 6:11Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: that little Emil was vision impaired.
- 6:15Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: They took action. And this is a kind of a unique story in that
- 6:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emil was not vision impaired,
- 6:26Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: but the mother wanted to take advantage of something here
- 6:31Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: by telling the customer agent that Emil was vision impaired.
- 6:37Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The friends knew differently,
- 6:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and the friends stepped up to the plate and said, "No,
- 6:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Emil is not vision impaired."
- 6:47Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What would you have advised the customer agent to do?
- 6:53Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Would you, in this instance,
- 6:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: to avoid any sort of argument or disturbance,
- 7:02Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: simply gone along with Emily's
- 7:06Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: claim that little Emil was vision impaired and just simply issued a pass
- 7:13Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: or a discounted pass to Emil?
- 7:16Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Or would you, like Emil's friends,
- 7:21Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: stepped up to the plate and said, "No, this is not right."
- 7:26Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You're using what I call counter-advocacy here.
- 7:33Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You're using
- 7:36Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: a so-called disability to gain an advantage.
- 7:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Is this right?
- 7:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I don't know what you think, but in my books, it is not right.
- 7:45Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: It is not right to say something that is not true,
- 7:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and it is not right to use a disability to
- 7:55Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: try and gain an advantage. What is your suggestion?
- 8:00Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What are your thoughts? Okay.
- 8:04Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So
- 8:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: here is what I would like you to think about.
- 8:12Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Are you on the side of the friends,
- 8:15Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: or are you on the side of Emily,
- 8:19Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: or
- 8:21Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: what would you advise
- 8:23Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: the customer agent to do?
- 8:27Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Tough decision, eh?
- 8:29Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So
- 8:31Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: what is advocacy all about? What is advocacy all about here?
- 8:38Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Advocacy, in my books, in this instance, is advocating for the right thing,
- 8:44Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: the honorable thing.
- 8:47Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And who gets involved with advocacy in this instance?
- 8:52Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: It is the friends who gets involved in advocacy because little Emil may be too
- 8:57Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: embarrassed to do something, but his friends can.
- 9:03Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Why is it necessary here? Because it's a matter of stopping
- 9:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: someone who has no conscience from trying to gain an
- 9:14Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: advantage by saying that her son has a disability,
- 9:19Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and it is not so.
- 9:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: How do you get involved in advocacy?
- 9:24Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You do so by exactly doing what the friends did.
- 9:29Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And when? When you see something that needs to be corrected.
- 9:36Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Let's move on to the second story.
- 9:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: All right.
- 9:43Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Customer was penalized for having a service dog in an Uber
- 9:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: cab. This is gaining a lot of attention,
- 9:55Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and Uber
- 9:57Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: seems to not understand
- 10:00Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: that the law or the regulations or the legislation says that they
- 10:06Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: must accept service dogs.
- 10:11Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: There is no other way,
- 10:14Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and this is a growing concern amongst our community here,
- 10:19Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: for those with guide dogs.
- 10:24Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Now, Rico had notified
- 10:28Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: the Uber company that he had a service dog when he called them for a ride.
- 10:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 10:37Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: At first, the driver said that the dog could go into the trunk.
- 10:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 10:48Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The driver said that the dog could sit with Rico in the backseat.
- 10:54Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Rico was then fined for his dog making a mess with its hairs or
- 11:00Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: leaving its hairs on the seat or on the floor of the cab.
- 11:06Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What would be your advice to Rico?
- 11:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I know what mine would be.
- 11:12Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: If I am very sure, and I think it is so,
- 11:17Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: that legally Uber has to take
- 11:21Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: a passenger with a service dog, then I would go much further.
- 11:25Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I will not take this because if this is what the law is,
- 11:29Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: it is as it is, and Uber needs to be called out.
- 11:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: There are too many people reporting on Facebook and even writing to me by
- 11:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: telling me that this is the case. So let's move on here.
- 11:45Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 11:46Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: All right.
- 11:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What is advocacy all about?
- 11:52Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Advocacy here is
- 11:56Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: when someone knows
- 11:59Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: that the law says that the cab company must
- 12:05Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: accept a passenger with a service dog.
- 12:10Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And the passenger has advised this, the Uber company.
- 12:18Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: This is what advocacy is all about, fighting for your rights.
- 12:23Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 12:27Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Who gets involved in advocacy here? Well, it's Rico to start with,
- 12:33Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and then Rico's friends, and he does this through social media and by word of mouth.
- 12:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Why is it necessary?
- 12:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Because the Uber company is not adhering to what the law says.
- 12:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: How do you get involved in advocacy?
- 12:52Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Rico starts the ball rolling.
- 12:54Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Rico goes to the Uber company to report what is going on.
- 12:58Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The Uber company does not do anything about it.
- 13:03Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Then Rico can go to or seek the services of a lawyer
- 13:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and post his experiences to social media.
- 13:15Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: When do you get involved in advocacy? As I said above,
- 13:18Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: when something is not right, when a company is not adhering to the law,
- 13:24Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and this appears to be the case
- 13:27Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: here with Uber.
- 13:31Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Right. Let's move on now to the next story.
- 13:35Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 13:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: You have someone who wrote to us saying that a medical assistant at a
- 13:46Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: lab refused to help a patient with a
- 13:52Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: vision impairment.
- 13:55Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: In a lab, we had a medical assistant
- 13:59Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: who refused to help a patient with a vision impairment.
- 14:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The assistant wanted the patient's friend to help her get undressed.
- 14:13Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: No, no, no. For me, it is a no, no, no. Okay?
- 14:20Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: The friend told the assistant that it was their duty to help the patient.
- 14:26Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 14:28Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And the patient reiterated this.
- 14:32Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What's wrong with this situation here?
- 14:37Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: For the most part, we don't get undressed in front of our friends,
- 14:42Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: do we? Unless it's our boyfriend or someone that we are intimate with.
- 14:48Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: But normally, we do not get undressed in front of our friends,
- 14:53Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: even our family.
- 14:55Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So for an assistant to say to the friend, "Help the patient,"
- 15:01Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: is wrong. Very, very wrong.
- 15:06Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And what
- 15:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: advice I would give to
- 15:13Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: this person, and I did give it,
- 15:15Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: is to go report this incident to the doctor
- 15:21Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: themselves,
- 15:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: not just to the person at the desk, but to the doctor themselves,
- 15:27Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and you start going higher. Okay?
- 15:31Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: What is advocacy?
- 15:33Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: It's advocating for something that must be offered
- 15:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: by the medical assistant
- 15:43Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: to the patient. It is a must.
- 15:46Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: There's no other way.
- 15:48Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Asking a friend or a family member to help the patient get undressed is
- 15:53Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: totally inacceptable.
- 15:57Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: This is what advocacy is all about, advocating for equal treatment
- 16:04Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: or advocating for something to be carried out
- 16:09Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: when the assistant knows or should know better.
- 16:14Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay? This is what advocacy is all about.
- 16:18Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And who gets involved? Well, it's the patient first,
- 16:22Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: then the friend,
- 16:24Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and then they build from there by going not just to the service desk or
- 16:31Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: the administrative desk
- 16:34Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: person, but going to the doctor themselves,
- 16:37Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and then you start going upwards from there.
- 16:40Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Hey, report it to the medical association.
- 16:43Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Report it to the person or the organization
- 16:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: who is in charge of this lab.
- 16:53Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay? It doesn't happen like that.
- 16:57Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Why is advocacy necessary?
- 16:59Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: It is necessary because this medical assistant
- 17:04Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: crossed the line.
- 17:07Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And how do you get involved in advocacy? As I just stated above,
- 17:11Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: patient, friend,
- 17:14Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: go to the administrative desk of the office of the lab.
- 17:20Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Go to the doctor. Okay?
- 17:23Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: And when do you get involved in advocacy? Again, as I said above,
- 17:26Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: you get involved when you honestly believe
- 17:30Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: that your privacy has been trampled upon or your rights have been trampled upon,
- 17:36Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: and in this case, it is your privacy.
- 17:39Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Okay?
- 17:41Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: So
- 17:43Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: I am Donna J. Jodhan, thanking you for stopping by to listen to me today.
- 17:49Donna J. Jodhan, LLB, ACSP, MBA: Please keep on listening and sending your feedback to me at
