- 0:02[SPEAKER_00]: Welcome back to the God and Mental Health podcast.
- 0:04[SPEAKER_00]: You're all I'm so excited to talk about this episode.
- 0:07[SPEAKER_00]: If you can't tell in my voice, I am energized ready to go, okay?
- 0:10[SPEAKER_00]: So we are an episode to of the Kindness of God, Mini Series and this episode is titled, Jesus and Curiosity, okay?
- 0:17[SPEAKER_00]: I wanna give you a quick recap if you have not listened to episode one of this Mini Series, just go back one episode.
- 0:23[SPEAKER_00]: But I basically established a foundation around God's character to not be shame or disappointment
- 0:32[SPEAKER_00]: brokenness as his children and in his kindness, he changes this, not out of guilt or fear.
- 0:37[SPEAKER_00]: But today we're going a little bit deeper and we're going to talk about curiosity.
- 0:42[SPEAKER_00]: This concept I'm going to start with a story before we get into that I want to present a couple of things to you before we get to that.
- 0:49[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus himself modeled curiosity in his ministry before he ever access to practice it.
- 0:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so I really loved the way that Christ presented himself a lot of times with the disciples.
- 1:01[SPEAKER_00]: He allowed them to ask questions, he allowed people to ask some questions.
- 1:04[SPEAKER_00]: He was always so open for conversation and banter about things that were challenging and hard.
- 1:10[SPEAKER_00]: So what I like, I want to say this as a principle because it can be something that we can always come back to.
- 1:15[SPEAKER_00]: Then when God presents something to us as a way to live, he always gives us a model first.
- 1:20[SPEAKER_00]: I was just telling a client about this that wilderness seasons are modeled for us to be able to see how the Lord deals with us in wilderness seasons.
- 1:28[SPEAKER_00]: Tintation is a way for the temptation that Jesus denied the devil of the Bible is a model for us to be able to see how do we fight temptation.
- 1:38[SPEAKER_00]: And so when God presents a way for us to live, he always gives a mother first.
- 1:42[SPEAKER_00]: He just doesn't tell us what to do, he shows us.
- 1:44[SPEAKER_00]: And so today we're gonna talk about Jesus and how Jesus showed curiosity throughout his ministry, because I think it's a way that we can look at the way in which God teaches us and shapes us in the way that we view our relationship with Him, okay?
- 1:57[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm gonna start this off with a story.
- 1:59[SPEAKER_00]: I put five in the three-year-old.
- 2:00[SPEAKER_00]: My oldest son loves movies.
- 2:03[SPEAKER_00]: He is obsessed with movies.
- 2:05[SPEAKER_00]: Him and my husband are two peas in the pot.
- 2:07[SPEAKER_00]: They can literally sit down all day on the couch and watch a movie.
- 2:10[SPEAKER_00]: Meanwhile, me and my youngest son we'd be bopping around around the house.
- 2:13[SPEAKER_00]: So he and I were walking around the house one day.
- 2:15[SPEAKER_00]: I was putting up some clothes in the larger room.
- 2:17[SPEAKER_00]: And he came up to me like, Mom, we can't watch a movie.
- 2:19[SPEAKER_00]: Mom, we can't watch a movie.
- 2:20[SPEAKER_00]: And I said, look, we're not gonna watch a movie right now.
- 2:23[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, I know that you are super anxious to get in front of this TV.
- 2:26[SPEAKER_00]: But right now we are having quiet time.
- 2:27[SPEAKER_00]: You can color or you can go play with your cars.
- 2:30[SPEAKER_00]: or your legos.
- 2:31[SPEAKER_00]: And he looked at me.
- 2:32[SPEAKER_00]: It caught his head to the side a little bit.
- 2:33[SPEAKER_00]: He said, mommy, anxious.
- 2:35[SPEAKER_00]: And I was like, this boy doesn't know what anxious means.
- 2:37[SPEAKER_00]: And then we talk about nervousness or scared or anger.
- 2:41[SPEAKER_00]: Like, we name emotions in our house, but I had never explained the concept of anxiousness to him.
- 2:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so when I put it together in a sentence around something he wanted, he did not understand what I was talking about.
- 2:52[SPEAKER_00]: And so I really brought this idea a bit.
- 2:54[SPEAKER_00]: My kids ask me a lot of questions.
- 2:56[SPEAKER_00]: If you're a parent, you understand this.
- 2:58[SPEAKER_00]: Or if you're around children, kids ask a lot of questions, because they really are trying to understand what we're presenting to them.
- 3:04[SPEAKER_00]: And I really thought about this because this is curiosity and infant form.
- 3:09[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think we need to really take that approach as I can talk about, I wanna bring that story as I talk about this in this episode because I wanna name like for Point One.
- 3:18[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus was a question-asker and that was not an accident.
- 3:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I think we have to think about our savior could have came down from heaven and pointing his finger and said, these are all the things you're all they're doing wrong.
- 3:29[SPEAKER_00]: But instead what he did was he modeled and for his disciples and the people that were around him that sparked so many questions because they went against what they knew.
- 3:37[SPEAKER_00]: They were, of course, dumbfounded and a lot of them thought he was blasphemous, but it was so against what they knew, but they were curious.
- 3:45[SPEAKER_00]: They were like, we know you're the son of man, but why are you doing this?
- 3:48[SPEAKER_00]: And what does this mean?
- 3:49[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus was a question-asker.
- 3:51[SPEAKER_00]: Curiosity is so important.
- 3:53[SPEAKER_00]: So Jesus was Jesus is the Son of God, He knows everything, He knows what you did, He knows what you're hiding, He knows what you've been caring for 37 years and yet in his entire ministry, one of his primary ways of engaging with people was through questions.
- 4:08[SPEAKER_00]: If he knows all these things, why is he asking me questions?
- 4:12[SPEAKER_00]: These are not accusations.
- 4:13[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't do that not for lecture purposes.
- 4:16[SPEAKER_00]: He asked questions and he did that through various ways.
- 4:19[SPEAKER_00]: He healed people differently.
- 4:21[SPEAKER_00]: He communicated with others differently and so I'm going to present this first point with a ton of different stories in the gospel that you can go back to.
- 4:29[SPEAKER_00]: So this is James and John, Mark 10 35 through 38.
- 4:34[SPEAKER_00]: So James and John are essentially walking with Jesus and they're amongst themselves and so they go up to Jesus and they basically say, teacher, we want you to do us a favor.
- 4:41[SPEAKER_00]: What is your request, Jesus replied?
- 4:43[SPEAKER_00]: When you sit on your glorious throne, we want to sit in places of honor next to you, one on your right, the other on your left.
- 4:50[SPEAKER_00]: Now, essentially this is like an ax because they basically say, okay, you can be sitting in the place on a we've been with you.
- 4:57[SPEAKER_00]: I want to sit next to you and Jesus basically says to them, you don't know what you're asking.
- 5:02[SPEAKER_00]: But notice what he didn't do.
- 5:03[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't shine them.
- 5:05[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't dismiss them.
- 5:06[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't lecture.
- 5:07[SPEAKER_00]: them, and they came to him like little kids, unashamed bold.
- 5:11[SPEAKER_00]: Like they genuinely believed he had the answers, and that's the child like they, he wants us to always come back to.
- 5:18[SPEAKER_00]: And there approach basically was, I know you have the ability, so I'm just gonna ask, no pretence, no performance, and honestly it was rooted interest.
- 5:27[SPEAKER_00]: What I love about this story, I read this set of scripture a couple of weeks ago.
- 5:31[SPEAKER_00]: And from the premise of what Jesus responded to them, he basically said, you don't know the cup I'm about to drink, are you able to drink from the cup that I'm about to drink?
- 5:40[SPEAKER_00]: He basically represented back to them.
- 5:43[SPEAKER_00]: You're asking me to sit in this spot, so let me help you understand the sacrifice that you're asking.
- 5:48[SPEAKER_00]: and it was a way for them to see that the suffering he was about to go through was actually what they were asking to sit at their place of honor.
- 5:55[SPEAKER_00]: But what James and John were basically saying is you about to be up in glory, we wanna be in glory too.
- 6:00[SPEAKER_00]: And what if we went to God and said,
- 6:04[SPEAKER_00]: actually really want to be wealthy or kind of really want to be in this type of relationship or got I really want to do this and the Lord will come back to you and say okay who do you need to be to do that okay what things do you need to give up to actually make that happen okay what things you actually need to put into place to put those things in order to make that happen which causes you to actually kill your flesh be honest about the sin you're living in be honest about the
- 6:31[SPEAKER_00]: And so a lot of times I think we can get curious, we want God to be a genius, just give these things to us.
- 6:37[SPEAKER_00]: But a lot of times in the teaching of Jesus, he always presented things that made us come back and think about what we were doing.
- 6:43[SPEAKER_00]: Many of the things that he said to us, said to the disciples, was a test of, why do you have such a little faith?
- 6:50[SPEAKER_00]: or when they were trying to cast out the demon in the boy and the disciples came back to him.
- 6:55[SPEAKER_00]: I don't remember what said a scripture was in and they said we tried to do it and he said this kind only comes out through praying fasting.
- 7:02[SPEAKER_00]: And so it's always a presentation of something to learn from what he's giving.
- 7:08[SPEAKER_00]: I'll give you another example.
- 7:10[SPEAKER_00]: This is the man at the pool of Bethesda, which is John 5 and 6.
- 7:15[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus walks up to this man who's basically been sick for 38 years and
- 7:19[SPEAKER_00]: like to get will.
- 7:21[SPEAKER_00]: Now, this man has been literally laying at this pool for almost 40 years, and Jesus, who has the ability to heal him, acts in the question, would you like to get will?
- 7:31[SPEAKER_00]: Why would Jesus do that?
- 7:32[SPEAKER_00]: He knew that this man had been there, the question was not about the information, it was about the invitation to name his own desire and to be honest about what he actually wanted.
- 7:41[SPEAKER_00]: because what happened was the man ended up presenting to him.
- 7:44[SPEAKER_00]: I've been here this long.
- 7:46[SPEAKER_00]: Everybody keeps going in the pool.
- 7:47[SPEAKER_00]: And so we often can sometimes give the excuse.
- 7:51[SPEAKER_00]: But Jesus was like, do you want to get well?
- 7:53[SPEAKER_00]: And he's essentially then healed him.
- 7:55[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think these
- 7:56[SPEAKER_00]: are just great stories to ponder on of the way Jesus communicated.
- 8:03[SPEAKER_00]: We kind of think about the aftermath of it.
- 8:05[SPEAKER_00]: But what was he doing?
- 8:07[SPEAKER_00]: What was he really trying to present us?
- 8:10[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes, honestly, this is my opinion.
- 8:12[SPEAKER_00]: I think a lot of us are scared to ask God the hard questions.
- 8:15[SPEAKER_00]: We're scared to present hard questions to him.
- 8:18[SPEAKER_00]: Like, why did you let my dad pass?
- 8:20[SPEAKER_00]: God, why did you give me a special niche child?
- 8:23[SPEAKER_00]: God, why did why there was I in a marriage for seven years that didn't work?
- 8:28[SPEAKER_00]: God, why am I in such a season that feels like it's never ending?
- 8:32[SPEAKER_00]: God, what are you really trying to do with me?
- 8:34[SPEAKER_00]: Who are you trying to make me be like, what more do you, I remember I was going through a really hard season.
- 8:39[SPEAKER_00]: This was about four years ago.
- 8:40[SPEAKER_00]: And it was a really rough season for me and my husband financially.
- 8:44[SPEAKER_00]: God, it's told me we were gonna be in a kind of a desolate season.
- 8:47[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember driving in the car.
- 8:50[SPEAKER_00]: And I remember I couldn't, I think my son, oldest son at the time, he was supposed to get speech therapy.
- 8:55[SPEAKER_00]: And I was driving in the car and I couldn't pay for it.
- 8:58[SPEAKER_00]: I think I was just so distraught.
- 9:01[SPEAKER_00]: And I was driving in the car down this street in Memphis, and I said to God, I said, what more do you want from me?
- 9:07[SPEAKER_00]: I have done everything I can to serve you in.
- 9:11[SPEAKER_00]: Do what I feel like I'm supposed to do.
- 9:13[SPEAKER_00]: What more do you want from me?
- 9:15[SPEAKER_00]: And God never responded back to me.
- 9:17[SPEAKER_00]: But I think what he wanted me to know was like, in my brokenness, I needed to be broken before him.
- 9:22[SPEAKER_00]: And I needed to lament.
- 9:24[SPEAKER_00]: And I needed to express.
- 9:25[SPEAKER_00]: And I needed to share how I felt.
- 9:27[SPEAKER_00]: because I was overwhelmed with distraught and agony and I just got curious, guy, what is it that you need for me?
- 9:34[SPEAKER_00]: And over the course of time, the Lord continue to provide, but just the ability to be that open and broken was in that season, what guy wanted for me.
- 9:44[SPEAKER_00]: I'm a president a couple of other scriptures as well and then I'm gonna get into the next point.
- 9:48[SPEAKER_00]: The woman at the will, we all know John Four.
- 9:51[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus initiates this conversation with the Samaritan woman and he's really crossing boundaries with doing that because of the culture at the time.
- 9:58[SPEAKER_00]: And so he kept asking her questions and presented all these things to her, but he ultimately ended up showing himself to be the Messiah to her.
- 10:06[SPEAKER_00]: And so I think that it's important that we really begin to get curious about what it is that we are thinking about feeling and ex-guide the questions.
- 10:16[SPEAKER_00]: And sometimes what he will end up doing is presenting something back to us.
- 10:20[SPEAKER_00]: So instead of curiosity, point number two, we default to criticism, judgment, and fear.
- 10:25[SPEAKER_00]: And so here's the contrast.
- 10:27[SPEAKER_00]: If Jesus model curiosity, if that is the way he consistently approached people, why is it so hard for us to approach our sales?
- 10:34[SPEAKER_00]: Why is it so hard for us to approach our sales and God that way?
- 10:38[SPEAKER_00]: Because our default is almost never curiosity.
- 10:40[SPEAKER_00]: It's criticism or fear.
- 10:41[SPEAKER_00]: We are so afraid.
- 10:43[SPEAKER_00]: And I'm gonna say it, I think it's bad theology for us, or what people say don't question God, because that is one is just not biblical.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: I'm just gonna say it.
- 10:52[SPEAKER_00]: Because even in the Psalms, David would say, God, how long are you gonna leave me here?
- 10:59[SPEAKER_00]: Oh, went how long will you forget about me?
- 11:01[SPEAKER_00]: And so for us to be so afraid to ask God,
- 11:05[SPEAKER_00]: question.
- 11:06[SPEAKER_00]: It's just not biblical.
- 11:08[SPEAKER_00]: It is not biblical to be that afraid to ask your father a question.
- 11:12[SPEAKER_00]: There's two sets of scriptures.
- 11:13[SPEAKER_00]: One is in John 15 that says, Jesus was basically saying, I no longer call you servants.
- 11:18[SPEAKER_00]: I call you friends.
- 11:19[SPEAKER_00]: And then there's a scripture in Romans.
- 11:21[SPEAKER_00]: I cannot remember off the top of my head.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: So Google it.
- 11:23[SPEAKER_00]: But it's basically saying that we now have the ability to be friends with God because of Jesus.
- 11:28[SPEAKER_00]: And so, because we have this friendship with the Lord, why is it so hard for us to feel like we can't ask our friend who is God, it says in Scripture, he is our friend a question.
- 11:40[SPEAKER_00]: We don't ask, I wonder what's going on here, we say what's wrong with me.
- 11:44[SPEAKER_00]: We don't get curious about why we keep responding the same way, we beat ourselves up for doing it again.
- 11:49[SPEAKER_00]: We don't explore what's underneath the feeling we shut it down or worse feel guilty for having it.
- 11:54[SPEAKER_00]: How this shows up with God specifically when we believe even subconsciously that God is disappointed in us shame takes over.
- 12:02[SPEAKER_00]: Shame says if I get quiet and honest, whatever I find is going to be used against me.
- 12:07[SPEAKER_00]: So instead of curiosity, we pull back, we hide, we perform.
- 12:10[SPEAKER_00]: We go back to what Adam and Eve didn't regard him the moment shame entered, they stopped asking questions and started covering themselves.
- 12:17[SPEAKER_00]: God presented the question to them, where are you?
- 12:20[SPEAKER_00]: who told you that we're necked, you were necked, God brought the curiosity and anime Eve ended up just hiding away.
- 12:26[SPEAKER_00]: So this is what Shane does.
- 12:28[SPEAKER_00]: It's just down curiosity entirely.
- 12:30[SPEAKER_00]: And what the Bible says is getting understanding.
- 12:33[SPEAKER_00]: And that is something that the enemy does.
- 12:35[SPEAKER_00]: It shut off your ability or even not even just the enemy by our own in-worth thoughts.
- 12:40[SPEAKER_00]: Because there is sometimes where we will tell ourselves, I don't have the ability to ask out that question.
- 12:45[SPEAKER_00]: I don't have the ability to understand and that is just not biblical y'all and I know I'm I know I'm coming a little hard today, but I really am saying this out of love of that is not what we that is when you truly lament and you're broken you have questions you have questions got us still sovereign got us still faithful but it's nothing wrong with you asking the question
- 13:05[SPEAKER_00]: So I want to tie this back to Episode 1, because in the last episode I talked about God's nature is not to shame us.
- 13:11[SPEAKER_00]: He moves towards our brokenness, not away from me.
- 13:14[SPEAKER_00]: His kindness is what makes us feel safe to be curious.
- 13:19[SPEAKER_00]: If you genuinely believe that God is not going to condemn you for what you find when you look inward, then looking inward becomes possible.
- 13:26[SPEAKER_00]: The problem is, we have not fully received God's kindness, and that is actually who he is towards us.
- 13:33[SPEAKER_00]: So we keep bracing ourselves instead of getting curious.
- 13:36[SPEAKER_00]: Point number three, you have a teacher who was designed for this, the Holy Spirit.
- 13:40[SPEAKER_00]: So here's what I wanna name.
- 13:41[SPEAKER_00]: We don't have to figure this out on our own or rely on other people that teach us.
- 13:45[SPEAKER_00]: Now, I'm not going to dismiss good teaching, good assignments, and even community, because I truly believe those things are meant to discipleists and teachers.
- 13:53[SPEAKER_00]: We need discipleships.
- 13:54[SPEAKER_00]: So here me clear, I am not criticizing the church, I'm not criticizing community, I'm not criticizing teaching.
- 14:00[SPEAKER_00]: But I think we also need to ask the Holy Spirit to help us decipher.
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Is this from you?
- 14:04[SPEAKER_00]: Is this not?
- 14:05[SPEAKER_00]: Help me understand, teach me, show me the interact with the Holy Spirit to go back and forth with you on what it, what this is.
- 14:13[SPEAKER_00]: So, description references on my title to this is John 16 and 13, which says, when the Spirit of Truth comes, he will guide you into all truth.
- 14:20[SPEAKER_00]: First, John, to 27, but you have received the Holy Spirit.
- 14:24[SPEAKER_00]: And he lives within you.
- 14:25[SPEAKER_00]: So, you don't need anyone to teach you what is true.
- 14:27[SPEAKER_00]: For the Spirit teaches you everything you need to know.
- 14:30[SPEAKER_00]: And what he teaches you is true, it is not a lie.
- 14:33[SPEAKER_00]: Just as he is taught to you, remain in fellowship with Christ.
- 14:37[SPEAKER_00]: His job is to comfort us, convict us, and guide us into truth.
- 14:41[SPEAKER_00]: This is not a passive role, it is active, personal, ongoing teaching.
- 14:46[SPEAKER_00]: And yet, so many of us never acts a Holy Spirit, a direct question.
- 14:50[SPEAKER_00]: The amount of times I say, help me help the girls, please help me help the girls, please.
- 14:54[SPEAKER_00]: I don't feel like I know what I'm doing.
- 14:56[SPEAKER_00]: I don't know what I'm doing today, and I'm going to say this too, unfortunately, I used to be very afraid to ask God questions, because when I was very afraid of what he was going to say to me, and I used to be like, I ask him because he don't have to tell him that truth, what that truth is no look like is, I'm going to have to stop doing this, and I really want to do a baby, I was avoiding like, I'll get out, but here's the thing, and if we go back to James and John again, the child like faith piece,
- 15:17[SPEAKER_00]: what made them able to walk up to Jesus and ask of what they wanted even if it was wrong.
- 15:22[SPEAKER_00]: It was trust.
- 15:23[SPEAKER_00]: It was the belief that he answers and that kind of boldness is the arrogance, it's faith.
- 15:30[SPEAKER_00]: The description he brews, I don't have the exact description in front of you.
- 15:32[SPEAKER_00]: This is boldly come before the throne of grace.
- 15:35[SPEAKER_00]: And in the following scriptures, this is we have a high priest who understands what we are feeling.
- 15:41[SPEAKER_00]: That's what Jesus meant when he said, we receive the kingdom like a little child.
- 15:44[SPEAKER_00]: Children do not perform before the ex
- 15:47[SPEAKER_00]: My baby boy asking me, my me was anxious was not out of fear.
- 15:51[SPEAKER_00]: He was genuinely like, girl, what does that mean?
- 15:53[SPEAKER_00]: They just ask, unashamed, trusting the answer without question.
- 15:57[SPEAKER_00]: That is a posture we have to have with all this spirit.
- 15:59[SPEAKER_00]: Teach me what this means.
- 16:01[SPEAKER_00]: Show me who you are, help me understand.
- 16:03[SPEAKER_00]: What am I feeling?
- 16:04[SPEAKER_00]: What is going on in me right now?
- 16:06[SPEAKER_00]: I explore a lot of times, is this sin or these are my own thoughts?
- 16:10[SPEAKER_00]: What is this?
- 16:11[SPEAKER_00]: Why do I feel so lucky when I see this girl's page?
- 16:14[SPEAKER_00]: Why do I feel so lucky when I feel like I'm not doing what I'm supposed to be doing?
- 16:18[SPEAKER_00]: What is this?
- 16:19[SPEAKER_00]: So, I'm gonna tie this back to kindness really quick.
- 16:21[SPEAKER_00]: This is why episode one matters so much because you will not bring your real questions to someone you don't trust.
- 16:27[SPEAKER_00]: If you believe God is kind, like really believe it, then curiosity becomes a natural thing in the world.
- 16:32[SPEAKER_00]: You can ask him things you're afraid to ask.
- 16:34[SPEAKER_00]: You can sit with questions instead of rushing to perform an answer.
- 16:37[SPEAKER_00]: You can say I don't understand this show me.
- 16:40[SPEAKER_00]: And I trust you, he will.
- 16:42[SPEAKER_00]: When I love about the Lord, I remember crying to the Lord a couple days ago about a relationship that I'm wrestling with right now.
- 16:49[SPEAKER_00]: And when I tell you, I boohooed and how was talking bad.
- 16:52[SPEAKER_00]: I was just like I just helped him they don't understand and at the end of my prayer time very gently the Lord said to me I think this is about a perspective you are rehab of them and you may need to change your thoughts and he whispered to me love and doers all and that chick me
- 17:09[SPEAKER_00]: because it was like, I'm raw and open and truly crashing out before you about this.
- 17:16[SPEAKER_00]: And you didn't shut me at the end.
- 17:18[SPEAKER_00]: You so gently said, hey, this is actually a perspective you had that you need to basically renew and then confirmed it with scripture and says, love and doors these things.
- 17:29[SPEAKER_00]: And that is, that was just so good to me because then I could take that and say, okay, I'm the problem.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: Okay.
- 17:35[SPEAKER_00]: So I'm going to give you a couple of reflections to close.
- 17:38[SPEAKER_00]: This week, I want to invite you to practice one thing.
- 17:41[SPEAKER_00]: Bring a question to the Holy Spirit instead of a statement, try saying, Holy Spirit, what are you trying to show me right now?
- 17:47[SPEAKER_00]: What do I keep missing?
- 17:49[SPEAKER_00]: Teach me who you are in this season.
- 17:51[SPEAKER_00]: Then be quiet long enough to listen.
- 17:53[SPEAKER_00]: There is active.
- 17:54[SPEAKER_00]: This is where active quiet time I was talking about episode one
- 17:58[SPEAKER_00]: If you notice yourself going into criticism, what is wrong with me?
- 18:02[SPEAKER_00]: Try reframing it as, I wonder what's going on here.
- 18:06[SPEAKER_00]: This is just what opens you up to shift from judgment to curiosity.
- 18:10[SPEAKER_00]: I want you to read John for this week, the whole woman at the well story and pay attention to specifically how Jesus leads the conversation with her.
- 18:19[SPEAKER_00]: Notice what he asks, what he doesn't say, how she ends up uncovering her own story rather than being exposed by him.
- 18:25[SPEAKER_00]: What I love about that story, specifically, is that he just pointed out what she was doing, but he did a shame her about it.
- 18:32[SPEAKER_00]: He didn't say you should be stoned, because women who were in that time frame had they been doing these things.
- 18:39[SPEAKER_00]: There was repercussions for that, and he didn't do that.
- 18:42[SPEAKER_00]: Last thing I'm gonna say is curiosity is a practice.
- 18:45[SPEAKER_00]: It won't come naturally at first, especially if criticism has been your default.
- 18:50[SPEAKER_00]: Jesus, but Jesus modeled it in the Holy Spirit really sustains that for us.
- 18:54[SPEAKER_00]: And so notice that God's kindness makes it safe.
- 18:57[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I want to bring this all together.
- 19:00[SPEAKER_00]: First episode is around God's kindness.
- 19:02[SPEAKER_00]: God's character of being kind.
- 19:04[SPEAKER_00]: This one is talking really about Jesus' curiosity and how he modeled it for us.
- 19:09[SPEAKER_00]: In the next episode, I'm gonna talk about how curiosity aids in our mental health journey and how really hope that you all enjoy it.
- 19:16[SPEAKER_00]: Okay, so I'll see you next week.
- 19:18[SPEAKER_00]: I'm playing around with release dates.
- 19:20[SPEAKER_00]: So y'all, I may release this a little bit earlier or a little bit later.
- 19:24[SPEAKER_00]: I'm playing around with release dates to see how people enjoy it.
- 19:27[SPEAKER_00]: I really kind of think the top of the week is better instead of the end of the week, but I really hope that you enjoyed this week's episode.
