- 1:52Speaker 5: I want to go live to the road. And I
- 1:55Speaker 5: say literally the road, because I've been telling you, We've
- 1:57Speaker 5: been telling you that our man Rob Reel from her
- 1:59Speaker 5: Sisters State ninety six one KWS is walking a large
- 2:03Speaker 5: check for WVU Children's from our studios here to eleven
- 2:06Speaker 5: eleven all the way to Children's Hospital in Morgantown, WVU Children's.
- 2:10Speaker 5: He left around eight or so this morning. His goal
- 2:12Speaker 5: is to at least get to Clinton Dennon today.
- 2:14Speaker 3: I think we have him. Now, let's check in with
- 2:16Speaker 3: him via the Big Lee Piggy Wiggly hotline. Rob Real,
- 2:18Speaker 3: are you there, sir?
- 2:20Speaker 6: I am. I actually have recently passed Bigly Piggy Wiggily.
- 2:23Speaker 6: They're getting some work done on their sign this morning.
- 2:26Speaker 6: I am on the strip of one nineteen that runs
- 2:30Speaker 6: right between the Interstate and well, the elkraver is just
- 2:34Speaker 6: now breaking back off from me. So I'm a couple
- 2:37Speaker 6: maybe not quite three miles into twenty one miles for today.
- 2:41Speaker 5: That's the goal, as we said, was twenty one miles
- 2:43Speaker 5: for today. And I just kept having this image Rob.
- 2:46Speaker 5: Last night I was thinking about this of you getting
- 2:48Speaker 5: to Mortgagtown and then realizing you forgot the check.
- 2:52Speaker 3: Put my mind at ease. You do have the check
- 2:54Speaker 3: with you, sir.
- 2:57Speaker 6: Yes, ish. Because of the size of the check it
- 3:00Speaker 6: is it is inside truck Norris for most of the walking,
- 3:04Speaker 6: so we we we break it out for the photo
- 3:07Speaker 6: opportunities and such. You may have heard my navigation there
- 3:10Speaker 6: in the background. We break it out for the photo opportunities,
- 3:13Speaker 6: but someone else is actually being responsible for the comically
- 3:16Speaker 6: oversized check.
- 3:17Speaker 5: Now, we, of course are going to be checking in
- 3:19Speaker 5: with you each day, and along the way we appreciate
- 3:22Speaker 5: you doing this.
- 3:23Speaker 2: Of course.
- 3:23Speaker 3: How much is the checking the amount of.
- 3:25Speaker 6: Roughly roughly one hundred and seventy two thousand and then some,
- 3:31Speaker 6: which translates to about one thousand dollars per mile. I'm
- 3:34Speaker 6: gonna walk. So when you when you get to dream
- 3:37Speaker 6: at Denver a little bit later, tell her, despite my
- 3:40Speaker 6: best efforts to model my life after Maynard G. Krebs,
- 3:43Speaker 6: I am failing miserably.
- 3:44Speaker 3: You were the one that.
- 3:45Speaker 5: Pointed that out in the interview the other day. I said, jelligant,
- 3:48Speaker 5: you love Maynard G. Crabs a lot more than you too.
- 3:50Speaker 5: All Right, so we'll talk. We will be talking to
- 3:52Speaker 5: dream of Denver a little bit later on, Rob, I
- 3:54Speaker 5: know that How's how's the weather? I know it's a
- 3:57Speaker 5: little bit chilly, but I'm on, I'm in a warm studio.
- 4:00Speaker 5: How's the weather?
- 4:01Speaker 6: You know? I can still see my breath because it's
- 4:04Speaker 6: thirty six degree Either that or I'm burning oil. But
- 4:08Speaker 6: you know, Mother Nature is going to get to like
- 4:10Speaker 6: sixty one today, maybe seventy tomorrow. I think it'll be
- 4:13Speaker 6: all right. I'm in layers, not unlike an onion layers.
- 4:16Speaker 3: Baby, I got you, I got you well, Rob, best
- 4:18Speaker 3: of luck to you.
- 4:19Speaker 5: I know we had some paparazzi out here this morning,
- 4:21Speaker 5: our good friends at WWK, we're out here. I think
- 4:24Speaker 5: watching you leave, are they still are they still along
- 4:26Speaker 5: for the ride or are they just going to pick
- 4:28Speaker 5: up the corpse At some point the.
- 4:30Speaker 6: Radio with pictures bailed out. I can't say I blame them.
- 4:33Speaker 6: Is that we ran the danger of breaking the camera.
- 4:36Speaker 6: There is a reason I'm on the radio and not
- 4:38Speaker 6: on television.
- 4:39Speaker 5: I got you, all right, Rob. We'll let you get
- 4:41Speaker 5: back to it again. Your goal is to try to
- 4:42Speaker 5: get to Clendenna.
- 4:43Speaker 3: Today.
- 4:43Speaker 5: Rob is walking a check well over one hundred thousand
- 4:46Speaker 5: dollars from Charleston to our studios all the way to

- 6:04Speaker 5: morning over at Gomart Ballpark, and I think now we
- 6:07Speaker 5: are gonna check in with doctor Casey Sachs for Pumpkin Drop.
- 6:11Speaker 3: Do we have doctor Sachs? Okay, we do not have
- 6:17Speaker 3: doctor Sachs.
- 6:20Speaker 5: I need a Jeopardy theme or something. Guys, we do
- 6:24Speaker 5: not have doctor Sachs. Okay, all right, well, all right,
- 6:27Speaker 5: well well we'll keep efforting to try to get doctor
- 6:29Speaker 5: Sachs on the show. So we're working. The problem is
- 6:35Speaker 5: we put doctor Sacks with Steve Animal. Steve Animals kind
- 6:38Speaker 5: of serving as the MC over there. Do we have
- 6:40Speaker 5: doctor sax now?
- 6:45Speaker 7: Can hear?
- 6:45Speaker 3: I can hear you? We have background noise? How you doing?
- 6:49Speaker 7: I'm great? How are you?
- 6:50Speaker 3: I'm doing fine? Thanks?
- 6:52Speaker 5: I know you got a lot going on over there,
- 6:53Speaker 5: But explain exactly this. This is the twenty fifth annual
- 6:56Speaker 5: Capital City Pumpkin Drop with the Education Alliance and Ridge Valley.
- 7:00Speaker 5: Our man Steve animals there too. But I want to
- 7:02Speaker 5: talk to you exactly what is pumpkin drop.
- 7:05Speaker 7: So pumpkin drop is where we have twenty five different
- 7:08Speaker 7: schools elementary, middle and high school bring forty different teams
- 7:11Speaker 7: and they design something while they're at the home their
- 7:15Speaker 7: homeschool to hopefully save a pumpkin from being dropped two stories.
- 7:19Speaker 7: So we've got aep out here and they help us
- 7:22Speaker 7: at the Lineman trucks and then they pull up the
- 7:25Speaker 7: pumpkins and drop them from the sky onto what we
- 7:28Speaker 7: call our drop zone. And then the kids watch and
- 7:31Speaker 7: we open up their boxes and see if they're pumpkin
- 7:34Speaker 7: neded or if it's splat.
- 7:35Speaker 5: So, when the pumpkins doctor sacks are actually dropped, is
- 7:39Speaker 5: there a way that the kids note that it's theirs
- 7:41Speaker 5: or there's just so many they just have to wait and.
- 7:42Speaker 6: See they do.
- 7:44Speaker 7: So they've written their names on the outside of their boxes,
- 7:47Speaker 7: and so we can say it's Hayes Middle School and
- 7:49Speaker 7: the kids who are from Hayes Middle School start cheering
- 7:52Speaker 7: and off it. We see, I've got a whole group
- 7:54Speaker 7: of kids in front of me, right now who have
- 7:56Speaker 7: their phones out and they're videotaping and counting down three, two,
- 8:00Speaker 7: one until we drop their pumpkin. And then we open
- 8:03Speaker 7: up the box and find out what happened.
- 8:05Speaker 5: And this is the twenty fifth anniversary, twenty five years.
- 8:07Speaker 5: I know you haven't been a part of that from
- 8:09Speaker 5: day one, but twenty five years that's a long time
- 8:11Speaker 5: to be dropping pumpkins.
- 8:13Speaker 8: It is.
- 8:14Speaker 7: It's a long time to be dropping pumpkins. It's been
- 8:16Speaker 7: really fun. We had fewer teams during COVID, but I
- 8:20Speaker 7: still had students participate, and really, I think with the
- 8:24Speaker 7: forty teams we have this year, really are back to
- 8:26Speaker 7: a lot of engagement and it's so fun to see
- 8:28Speaker 7: so many different schools and teachers bring their students out
- 8:31Speaker 7: to do the design project.
- 8:33Speaker 3: And how's my man Steve Animal? Is he okay? Are
- 8:35Speaker 3: you keeping an eye on Animal over there?
- 8:37Speaker 7: He's doing a great job. He has mceed this for
- 8:40Speaker 7: years and just loved the kids and loved watching the pumpkins.
- 8:44Speaker 7: He's a great contribution.
- 8:46Speaker 5: Well, you know, anytime that you can break stuff and
- 8:48Speaker 5: you can have screaming people, chances are Steve animals around
- 8:52Speaker 5: fair enough?
- 8:53Speaker 3: All right? I do want to.
- 8:55Speaker 5: Transition real quick, and I know you got to get
- 8:56Speaker 5: back to it, but I do want to transition real
- 8:58Speaker 5: quick into some A big news that broke with Bridge
- 9:01Speaker 5: Valley earlier this week, a big announcement about a partnership
- 9:03Speaker 5: between Bridge Valley and Marshall.
- 9:05Speaker 3: Can you tell us about that.
- 9:06Speaker 7: Absolutely, we're just so thrilled. Marshall University designed what's called
- 9:10Speaker 7: a Bachelor of Applied Science. They'll take seventy two credit
- 9:14Speaker 7: hours from students who go to Bridge Valley that count
- 9:16Speaker 7: completely towards their degree. So the degrees are kind of
- 9:20Speaker 7: like a choose your own adventure and you really do
- 9:22Speaker 7: get to design your own degree, and they accept all
- 9:25Speaker 7: of the credits. So it means a student can complete
- 9:27Speaker 7: an associate's degree and even take a couple of extra
- 9:30Speaker 7: classes because an associate's degree is sixty credit hours, and
- 9:34Speaker 7: then transfer seamlessly to Marshall to be able to complete
- 9:37Speaker 7: that bachelor's degree.
- 9:38Speaker 5: I mean, this is exciting stuff because these partnerships. You
- 9:41Speaker 5: have partnerships I don't know quite as big as this one,
- 9:43Speaker 5: but you work with all of the other institutions of
- 9:45Speaker 5: higher learning across the state of West Virginia as well
- 9:47Speaker 5: as public school. So I think that you are to
- 9:50Speaker 5: be complimented for that for sure.
- 9:52Speaker 7: Thank you. We really want our students to go to
- 9:55Speaker 7: what is a good fit for them, and there's so
- 9:57Speaker 7: many great degree programs at Marshall that anything we can
- 9:59Speaker 7: do to make that transfer process more seamless, we really
- 10:02Speaker 7: want to.
- 10:03Speaker 5: So how many kids approximately do you have out there
- 10:06Speaker 5: at Gomar Ballpark this morning?
- 10:07Speaker 3: Just to approximately?
- 10:09Speaker 7: Oh gosh, I would say there's probably four hundred people
- 10:13Speaker 7: out here. Some of them are parents and teachers, but
- 10:15Speaker 7: most are kids who did some kind of design work
- 10:18Speaker 7: to save a pumpkin.
- 10:19Speaker 5: This is really good stuff, as I said, as part
- 10:21Speaker 5: of the STEM program there, working with these public schools.
- 10:23Speaker 5: And you got them from I mean, with four hundred students,
- 10:25Speaker 5: you got them from several counties, I.
- 10:27Speaker 6: Would think, right for sure.
- 10:30Speaker 7: I think as far away as Wyoming County have driven
- 10:32Speaker 7: in this morning for it.
- 10:33Speaker 5: Well, it's a lot of fun. The weather is going
- 10:34Speaker 5: to be great. Keeping eye on Steve Animal over there. Okay,
- 10:36Speaker 5: Now you're supposed to wrap up things. I think around
- 10:39Speaker 5: one o'clock, is that right? So maybe next time we
- 10:42Speaker 5: have you on which I think we have your scheduled
- 10:43Speaker 5: later in a month well, maybe you can give us
- 10:45Speaker 5: the names or whatever of the ones that won and
- 10:48Speaker 5: we'll talk about what a success it was, Doctor Sachs,
- 10:50Speaker 5: I appreciate you being here.
- 10:52Speaker 7: Thank you so much for having me.
- 10:53Speaker 5: Dave, let you get right back to it. Over at
- 10:55Speaker 5: Gomart Ballpark, the Great twenty fifth Annual Great Pumpkin Drop
- 10:59Speaker 5: is going on as we speak. It's always something going
- 11:01Speaker 5: on over on this show, and we had a lot
- 11:04Speaker 5: to get to. As I said, Dream of Denver is
- 11:06Speaker 5: going to be coming up a little bit later on.
- 11:08Speaker 5: Plus I'm want to get to some things in the news,

- 15:37Speaker 5: there's some sort of an issue somewhere with weather phone
- 15:39Speaker 5: or something.
- 15:40Speaker 12: You know.
- 15:40Speaker 5: Again, it's a fourth day in the studio, so we're
- 15:42Speaker 5: doing the best we can in here. So Ryan's working
- 15:45Speaker 5: on it. We'll try to get dream of Denver here. Momentarily.
- 15:49Speaker 5: I suppose we schedule have her at nine to twenty,
- 15:51Speaker 5: and we do not have dream of Denver this morning.
- 15:54Speaker 5: So again I gotta get that Jeopardy theme. You know,
- 16:00Speaker 5: no dreamer talk, Tommy, Ryan, we got no dreamer. Okay,

- 16:30Speaker 5: to Tom Bragg about that. There's been a lot of

- 16:38Speaker 3: We are going to talk to Fred Albert.
- 16:40Speaker 5: He'll be in studio, so I know that won't be
- 16:41Speaker 5: a problem tomorrow. We'll talk to Fred Albert coming up

- 16:47Speaker 5: Hannah Gardner from the GNAAL Charleston Humane Association will be
- 16:50Speaker 5: here with this week's Adopt Me Please Pet of the

- 16:55Speaker 3: I'm hearing the sound of phone line. Do we have
- 16:57Speaker 3: dream of Denver?
- 16:58Speaker 13: Yes?
- 16:59Speaker 7: You do?
- 17:00Speaker 3: DREAMA How are you welcome to the show.
- 17:03Speaker 12: I'm so nice to be with you guys this early.
- 17:06Speaker 12: What day is this? I totally lost it is?
- 17:09Speaker 3: It is Thursday, October the seventeenth.
- 17:12Speaker 12: This is early Thursday morning.
- 17:14Speaker 3: Yes, I know, you know. I first met you.
- 17:17Speaker 5: I guess dreamed that, like you know, ten years or
- 17:18Speaker 5: so ago, when you and I along with our shared
- 17:21Speaker 5: agent Burke Allen and another one of his kids. If
- 17:23Speaker 5: you will land out Eugene Murphy Junior running all over
- 17:26Speaker 5: Charleston in the Capitol and whatnot.
- 17:27Speaker 3: It is great to talk to you again, though.
- 17:30Speaker 12: It's good to talk to you too. I was thinking
- 17:32Speaker 12: I could not remember how long it had been, but
- 17:35Speaker 12: I knew it had been a long time since we talked.
- 17:38Speaker 12: I have to write a book to be able to
- 17:40Speaker 12: talk to you again.
- 17:41Speaker 5: You know you can talk to me any time you
- 17:43Speaker 5: want to dream, but I promise you can't. So let's
- 17:46Speaker 5: start with this new book. It's called Island Icon. And
- 17:50Speaker 5: has it really been sixty years since Gilligan's Island premiered.
- 17:54Speaker 12: It has been. I don't know if the listeners know that,
- 17:57Speaker 12: but the show premiered on September twenty, nineteen sixty four,
- 18:03Speaker 12: and since this is twenty twenty four, it has been
- 18:06Speaker 12: on the air for sixty years. And I wanted to
- 18:09Speaker 12: I don't know. I thought it was important because most
- 18:11Speaker 12: of the castaways are gone. The only one who's left
- 18:14Speaker 12: is Tina Louise, who played Ginger, and I just thought
- 18:18Speaker 12: it was important to acknowledge, you know, such a big
- 18:21Speaker 12: anniversary some way, somehow. So that's how the book came about.
- 18:26Speaker 12: And I have to tell you, Dave, it is really
- 18:28Speaker 12: it's a treasure for any classic TV fan. I went
- 18:33Speaker 12: through every nook and cranny of my house searching for
- 18:36Speaker 12: memorabilia and you know, old telegrams and things like that
- 18:41Speaker 12: that Bob got during the course of his career. And
- 18:44Speaker 12: I have to tell you one thing I found. Bob's
- 18:48Speaker 12: mother had passed away and left a box that we
- 18:52Speaker 12: had in our possession that we never looked through. And
- 18:55Speaker 12: so as I was looking, I found the box. I
- 18:57Speaker 12: went through it and would you believe that I found
- 19:00Speaker 12: in that box a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays postcard to
- 19:05Speaker 12: Bob from Elvis and the Colonel.
- 19:08Speaker 3: Oh really, wow, that's good. That's the book.
- 19:12Speaker 12: So it was. That's one little Easter egg treasure that
- 19:16Speaker 12: I'll tell you about. There are others, but it's just
- 19:19Speaker 12: you know, it's newspaper clippings from when he got the
- 19:22Speaker 12: part of Maynard. For those who remember Dobie Gillis and
- 19:26Speaker 12: and just all the you know, I was reading them
- 19:29Speaker 12: and I went, wow, my husband was like a teen
- 19:32Speaker 12: idol who knew, well, he was always.
- 19:35Speaker 3: An idol to you.
- 19:36Speaker 5: I'm sure he was always an idol to you, but
- 19:37Speaker 5: now you realize he was an idol to everyone else.
- 19:40Speaker 5: Of course, you know, dreaming You've got so many wonderful
- 19:42Speaker 5: memories of your late husband, Bob. But you got to
- 19:45Speaker 5: see a side that no one else saw. Tell us
- 19:47Speaker 5: about the Bob Denver that no one else knew.
- 19:50Speaker 12: Oh gosh, well, the Bob Denver that no one else
- 19:53Speaker 12: knew was highly intelligent. You can't go by gilligan.
- 19:57Speaker 3: It's a role. It's a role. It's you know, it's
- 19:59Speaker 3: a and.
- 20:00Speaker 12: It takes a smart person to play a dumb person,
- 20:02Speaker 12: you know, but not a dumb person, but in nevish
- 20:05Speaker 12: the way the character was. He was very bright, you know,
- 20:09Speaker 12: well versed on almost any subject, could talk to anybody
- 20:12Speaker 12: about anything. I think another thing that would would surprise
- 20:16Speaker 12: people that actually surprised me when I first met him is,
- 20:20Speaker 12: you know, Bob Denver himself was kind of sexy. You know,
- 20:24Speaker 12: he was romantic and and made you, you know, as
- 20:28Speaker 12: his partner, feel like a million bucks easy, now.
- 20:32Speaker 5: Dream of this is a family show. It's nine o'clock
- 20:34Speaker 5: in the morning. Let's they'll get into all that.
- 20:35Speaker 12: I'm not going any further than that. It was the
- 20:38Speaker 12: you know he I know, one Christmas he took out
- 20:41Speaker 12: a full page ad in the newspaper to tell me
- 20:44Speaker 12: how much he loved me. And that's the kind of
- 20:46Speaker 12: thing I mean, he was just, oh, it was very
- 20:49Speaker 12: you know, very very sweet. However, it was Christmas morning
- 20:52Speaker 12: and everybody's busy on Christmas morning, and nobody saw it.
- 20:56Speaker 3: Well, it's a.
- 20:57Speaker 5: Thought that speaking as speaking as a husband, it's thought
- 21:00Speaker 5: the counts.
- 21:00Speaker 12: Right, Oh exactly. No, I was all good with it.
- 21:03Speaker 12: I had the newspaper, I could look at it anytime
- 21:06Speaker 12: I wanted to do, so it was all good. And
- 21:08Speaker 12: then the other thing about Bob, you know, people think that,
- 21:11Speaker 12: you know, he lived his life getting hit in the
- 21:13Speaker 12: head with coconuts and falling out of hammocks and all
- 21:15Speaker 12: of that. But the truth of the matter is Bob
- 21:19Speaker 12: was kind of a low key, chill sort of person
- 21:24Speaker 12: who read a lot. He was an avid reader, so
- 21:28Speaker 12: you know, he read a lot. He was quiet in
- 21:30Speaker 12: his private life, certainly, nothing like Gilligan. But Again, what
- 21:35Speaker 12: a lot of people don't know is Bob was also
- 21:38Speaker 12: Bob and I, but he was the father of a
- 21:41Speaker 12: severely autistic son, and so he spent the last twenty
- 21:45Speaker 12: years of his life with me giving full time care
- 21:49Speaker 12: to our son. And most people don't know that. But
- 21:52Speaker 12: my book Gillian's Dreams, the one I wrote a few
- 21:54Speaker 12: years ago, is the story of those thirty years that
- 21:57Speaker 12: we were married. And then this book Island Icon, the
- 22:00Speaker 12: many lives of Bob Denver. Really there's such great companion pieces,
- 22:05Speaker 12: you know, because you read the story in Gilligan's Dreams
- 22:08Speaker 12: and then you're able to go through Island Icon and
- 22:11Speaker 12: see all the pictures and all the mementos that meant
- 22:16Speaker 12: something to him in his life. I think it's pretty
- 22:19Speaker 12: it's pretty amazing. I think I'm very proud of the book.
- 22:22Speaker 5: Do you think that that Bob Denver realized what an
- 22:26Speaker 5: impact that that character Gilligan had on so many different
- 22:31Speaker 5: I'm a gen X kid, so I grew up with
- 22:32Speaker 5: the reruns, you know, in the nineteen seventies and eighties.
- 22:35Speaker 5: But you know, the show is still streaming. I don't
- 22:37Speaker 5: think it's ever not been on the air somewhere on
- 22:40Speaker 5: one of the cable channels. Or again, you know, now
- 22:42Speaker 5: through the magic of the Internet, you can look at
- 22:44Speaker 5: whatever you want. Do you think that Bob realized what
- 22:47Speaker 5: an impact that that character and overall that show had
- 22:51Speaker 5: on so many people.
- 22:53Speaker 12: Initially, No, I don't think anybody thought it would last.
- 22:58Speaker 12: Maybe they were hoping for the first season actually, and
- 23:01Speaker 12: then when it got picked up, that was exciting. And
- 23:03Speaker 12: then it got picked up for a third season. And
- 23:05Speaker 12: back in those days, they did thirty three episodes of season,
- 23:09Speaker 12: which is unheard of. Oh yeah, so they got you know,
- 23:12Speaker 12: probably four seasons worth of shows out of the three
- 23:14Speaker 12: seasons that it ran. But as time went by. By
- 23:17Speaker 12: the time I met him, I met him in nineteen
- 23:20Speaker 12: seventy seven, the show had been off the air for
- 23:22Speaker 12: ten years from the initial run, but however it was
- 23:26Speaker 12: still on the air, so you know, he was still
- 23:29Speaker 12: highly popular and much sought after and all those things.
- 23:32Speaker 12: So as time went by and I was with him
- 23:34Speaker 12: thirty years, you know, he started when when the internet
- 23:39Speaker 12: became a thing and people could email and snail mail
- 23:43Speaker 12: all of that, he got so many letters from from
- 23:46Speaker 12: people talking about how the show had been their safe
- 23:51Speaker 12: space during their childhood maybe they had, you know, an
- 23:54Speaker 12: alcoholic parents, or maybe there was abuse in the family.
- 23:58Speaker 12: He got lots and lots and lots of letters and
- 24:01Speaker 12: emails like that, and he started understanding and really appreciating
- 24:07Speaker 12: the impact the show it had and was always proud
- 24:11Speaker 12: of having done it, but became more and more proud
- 24:13Speaker 12: because he didn't. I mean, you wouldn't think a little
- 24:16Speaker 12: show like that about seven stranded castaways on an island
- 24:20Speaker 12: would impact people in any way Shapeer for him, really,
- 24:25Speaker 12: but it did, and he was very He ended up
- 24:27Speaker 12: very obviously proud of the work they had done. And
- 24:30Speaker 12: when he passed away, the show had been on the
- 24:32Speaker 12: air for forty years, so you can imatin he couldn't
- 24:36Speaker 12: believe that, So you're can imagine how he'd be feeling
- 24:40Speaker 12: knowing it's been sixty years. For heaven's sakes.
- 24:44Speaker 5: Well, we're talking to dream of Denver again, who's got
- 24:46Speaker 5: a new book out, and we get back to that,
- 24:48Speaker 5: but I want to talk about Dreamer for just a moment,
- 24:49Speaker 5: because what people don't realize, in addition to being married
- 24:53Speaker 5: to Bob Denver, you are an accomplished actress. You do
- 24:56Speaker 5: a lot of different things in your own right. Talk
- 24:58Speaker 5: about the dream of Denver that maybe people.
- 24:59Speaker 12: Do, oh, the dream of Denver that had to find
- 25:03Speaker 12: her way after her husband passed away. And that was
- 25:06Speaker 12: a scary, scary time for me because I was left
- 25:09Speaker 12: with a twenty year old severely autistic son, and so
- 25:12Speaker 12: I was terrified, didn't know how to keep going. But
- 25:16Speaker 12: I guess it took me about three years to start
- 25:18Speaker 12: getting my bearings, and I did some things. You know,
- 25:22Speaker 12: what I found is when I stepped outside myself and
- 25:25Speaker 12: my pain and my grief and looked at other people
- 25:28Speaker 12: and did things for others. You always hear this, but
- 25:31Speaker 12: it's so true. Getting taken out of my pain helped.
- 25:36Speaker 12: And so I don't know how many people are aware.
- 25:39Speaker 12: I started the first sanctioned honor flight program in West
- 25:45Speaker 12: Virginia called Always three on Our Flight. We did it
- 25:48Speaker 12: for ten years. We served West Virginia veterans World War Two,
- 25:53Speaker 12: Korea and Vietnam. We served hundreds of veterans, took them
- 25:57Speaker 12: to Washington, d c. For you know, to be able
- 26:00Speaker 12: to see their memorials. Most of them had never seen.
- 26:03Speaker 12: And that was the privilege of my lifetime. That was
- 26:06Speaker 12: a wonderful thing to do. I also now this is
- 26:09Speaker 12: to me, this is a very big deal. I don't
- 26:11Speaker 12: know what it is to anybody else. But in twenty fourteen,
- 26:16Speaker 12: I led the effort to have Country Roads take Me
- 26:18Speaker 12: Home adopted as an official West Virginia state song, and
- 26:24Speaker 12: it happened. We tried it in twenty thirteen. It didn't pass.
- 26:27Speaker 12: The Senate failure was not an option in twenty fourteen,
- 26:31Speaker 12: so I wrote letters to every single Senator telling them
- 26:35Speaker 12: how you know, people had been approaching me about where
- 26:38Speaker 12: they had had this song sung to them all over
- 26:42Speaker 12: the world. And I'm talking the Great Wall of China
- 26:44Speaker 12: and the streets of Italy and every pub in Ireland obviously,
- 26:50Speaker 12: and you know it just I got a call from
- 26:53Speaker 12: the governor at the time saying it's going to pass.
- 26:56Speaker 12: We know it's going to pass. We want you to
- 26:58Speaker 12: be here on the Senate floor when it does. So
- 27:00Speaker 12: that was in my single life, excluding marrying Bob and
- 27:06Speaker 12: having my son. That was one of the proudest days
- 27:09Speaker 12: of my life. I just felt like I'd done something,
- 27:11Speaker 12: you know, with the help of all my listeners on
- 27:14Speaker 12: my radio show at the time, I felt I had
- 27:16Speaker 12: done something really wonderful for West Virginia, my home States.
- 27:21Speaker 3: Yeah, you are.
- 27:22Speaker 5: You know, you're from West Virginia and you choose to
- 27:24Speaker 5: I mean, you do a lot of traveling, but you
- 27:25Speaker 5: choose to live in West Virginia. And Bob Denver, you
- 27:28Speaker 5: kind of made him an honorary West Virginia, right.
- 27:31Speaker 12: He loved being an He called himself an adopted West Virginian.
- 27:35Speaker 12: And actually when we came back here, it was after Colin.
- 27:38Speaker 12: Oh gosh, Colin was about seven years old and we
- 27:40Speaker 12: were doing full time care and we just wanted to
- 27:43Speaker 12: be We were living in Vegas at the time, during
- 27:45Speaker 12: the first boom out there, so we just wanted to
- 27:48Speaker 12: be somewhere quiet and peaceful where we could take care
- 27:51Speaker 12: of our kid. And so we had been looking in
- 27:55Speaker 12: the Sanandoah Valley and Bob said, then you grew up
- 27:58Speaker 12: near here and I grew up in Bluefield, West Virginia.
- 28:00Speaker 12: And I said sure, and he said, well, let's go
- 28:02Speaker 12: look at that. And we got up in these mountains.
- 28:05Speaker 12: That he was that was it for him. He was like,
- 28:07Speaker 12: why are we looking in the valley when these beautiful
- 28:10Speaker 12: mountains are here? And I would I don't know. And
- 28:12Speaker 12: so he was the one who really, you know, I
- 28:16Speaker 12: never imagined i'd come back here, but he was the
- 28:19Speaker 12: one who really wanted to live in the mountains until
- 28:21Speaker 12: we came back and I got it. Tell you, Dave
- 28:23Speaker 12: right now, I have never been so happy to live
- 28:26Speaker 12: on top of a mountain in the state of West Virginia.
- 28:29Speaker 5: It's a scary world out there. It's not so bad here.
- 28:31Speaker 5: It was Virginia.
- 28:33Speaker 12: It is and here there's a feeling of, you know again,
- 28:37Speaker 12: peace and safety. So I love being I'm so happy
- 28:40Speaker 12: I'm back here.
- 28:40Speaker 5: Something to be said for those West Virginia mountains dream
- 28:42Speaker 5: But before we let you go, the book it's called
- 28:44Speaker 5: Island to Icon, and I'm presuming it's available wherever you
- 28:47Speaker 5: get wherever you get your books, right, you know wherever
- 28:50Speaker 5: are you get looks.
- 28:51Speaker 12: But I just want folks to know. I want the
- 28:52Speaker 12: listeners to know that I'm going to be at Adams
- 28:55Speaker 12: Palmart in the Huntington Mall tomorrow from three until four
- 28:59Speaker 12: point thirty, and then later in the day in Charleston
- 29:03Speaker 12: at South Ridge from six until eight, also at Adam's Palmark,
- 29:08Speaker 12: and I will be at the West Virginia Book Festival
- 29:10Speaker 12: on Saturday, so there'll be lots of opportunities to come
- 29:14Speaker 12: and see me and get an autograph book. Otherwise, you
- 29:17Speaker 12: can get an autograph book at Bobdenver dot com or
- 29:20Speaker 12: you can always get it on Amazon. Won't be autographed
- 29:23Speaker 12: that you can get it on Amazon.
- 29:24Speaker 5: All right, Dreamer, you are a West Virginia treasure, my dear,
- 29:27Speaker 5: and thank you so much for taking time to being
- 29:29Speaker 5: on the show and sharing the memories of your late husband.
- 29:32Speaker 5: And we're very proud to that still have you. You
- 29:34Speaker 5: can be anywhere you want to be, but you choose
- 29:36Speaker 5: to be back home with West Virginia. We need more
- 29:38Speaker 5: stories like that. I appreciate you being here, thanks a lot.
- 29:41Speaker 12: Thank you so much for having me, Dave. I appreciate it.
- 29:43Speaker 3: Too, See you soon.
- 29:44Speaker 5: It is twenty three minutes away from ten Bigley Pigley
- 29:47Speaker 5: Wiggly Hotline three zero four three four five fifty eight
- 29:50Speaker 5: fifty eight Tony the Taylor Text three zero four nine
- 29:53Speaker 5: three five five zero zero eight.
- 29:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:54Speaker 5: I met Dreamer, I guess about ten years ago, and
- 29:58Speaker 5: I just happen to be at the Capitol that day,
- 30:00Speaker 5: the day that she was talking about when Country Roads
- 30:04Speaker 5: the John Denver song you know was made, the West
- 30:07Speaker 5: Virginia song, And I was there that day with her
- 30:09Speaker 5: and Landel Murphy at the Capitol. And I don't know that.
- 30:13Speaker 5: I mean, I've known You've heard me talk about Landau
- 30:15Speaker 5: in the past. Landau and I've known each other for
- 30:17Speaker 5: thirty years, But with Dreamer, I did not meet her
- 30:19Speaker 5: until that day. I don't know that I ever met
- 30:21Speaker 5: a more genuine person, especially coming out of the world
- 30:25Speaker 5: of entertainment. She and Bob I think, I don't know
- 30:27Speaker 5: if they actually met then, but I think they appeared
- 30:31Speaker 5: together on an episode of love Boat in like nineteen
- 30:34Speaker 5: seventy seven, seventy eight or so. That may not be
- 30:36Speaker 5: where they met, but that's what they did appear together.

- 38:05Speaker 3: Let me get you a couple of.
- 38:06Speaker 5: Texts here, some things in the news, and then I
- 38:09Speaker 5: want to also maybe get into a little bit of
- 38:11Speaker 5: a rant this morning, because I do that from time
- 38:13Speaker 5: to time. Texas Dave, are we getting into the Jimbo bailout?
- 38:17Speaker 5: Jim Justice credits God for saving his behind on the Greenbrier. However,
- 38:22Speaker 5: as Fortress Investment Group is owned by Sovereign Wealth Fund,
- 38:26Speaker 5: Jimbo should be thanking Allah for this.
- 38:30Speaker 3: Zobbi. Does anyone else find it concerning.
- 38:33Speaker 5: That a or would be US senator is in debt
- 38:37Speaker 5: to a foreign country? I was listening to some of
- 38:41Speaker 5: Ask the Attorney with Tom Payton that airs on Thursday
- 38:44Speaker 5: mornings prior to this show, and I was kind of
- 38:47Speaker 5: hearing bits and pieces of it as I was trying
- 38:48Speaker 5: to prepare for this show this morning, and I heard
- 38:51Speaker 5: him bring it up. It's I did hear some of
- 38:55Speaker 5: the Governor's statements when he thanked God, you know, for this,
- 38:59Speaker 5: and you should always the I'm you know, you know
- 39:00Speaker 5: my belief. I think you can thank God for everything,
- 39:03Speaker 5: can't hurt, you know what I mean. But this Fortress
- 39:06Speaker 5: Investment group, I think there's a lot of questions with them.
- 39:08Speaker 5: That's more of the Brad McIlhenny and Hoppey Kerchival line
- 39:12Speaker 5: of thinking. And they are going to get into that,
- 39:13Speaker 5: I think a little bit on the show, and they
- 39:16Speaker 5: have to a certain extent already. But the final line
- 39:19Speaker 5: of that text from the Texter saying, does anyone find
- 39:23Speaker 5: it concerning that our to be US senator is in
- 39:26Speaker 5: debt to a foreign country? That's something I think that
- 39:29Speaker 5: has to closely, in my opinion, be looked at. Now
- 39:33Speaker 5: let me see, I had another text about the governor yesterday,
- 39:35Speaker 5: says a texture Jim Jim Justice told his opponent Glenn
- 39:39Speaker 5: Elliott that he could kiss baby dogs.
- 39:41Speaker 3: Heinie, I didn't.
- 39:42Speaker 5: That was during a presser that was held at eleven
- 39:44Speaker 5: o'clock I think it was yesterday morning. I did not
- 39:47Speaker 5: get to see it. I heard the comment later that
- 39:52Speaker 5: the governor did tell Wheeling may or former Wieling mayor
- 39:56Speaker 5: Glenn Elliott, the opposition to the governor for US Senate,
- 39:59Speaker 5: that he could kiss baby dogs.
- 40:02Speaker 8: Heinee.
- 40:02Speaker 5: Look, I've had the governor on the show in the past.
- 40:08Speaker 5: I've said it before. I'm not saying anything I wouldn't
- 40:10Speaker 5: say to his face. Of course, with Jim Justice, I
- 40:14Speaker 5: would be speaking like directly to his belt level, maybe.
- 40:16Speaker 3: A little bit a little bit up above that.
- 40:19Speaker 5: I got a problem, uh, with the way that not
- 40:22Speaker 5: only Jim Justice, and he didn't ask me what I thought.
- 40:25Speaker 5: By the way, I had a problem with not only
- 40:27Speaker 5: Jim Justice, but also as hero Donald Trump, the way
- 40:29Speaker 5: that they address people, and the way and he's certain
- 40:33Speaker 5: amount of decor him. And look, I'm the world's oldest
- 40:35Speaker 5: frat boy, as my wife calls me.
- 40:36Speaker 3: I get it.
- 40:37Speaker 5: I love blue talk. I love you know, I can,
- 40:39Speaker 5: I can, I can. I can throw out things like
- 40:41Speaker 5: that myself. But time and place, read the room, you know,
- 40:45Speaker 5: read the room. And I just I'm not a fan
- 40:48Speaker 5: of that I'm sorry, Governor. With all due respect to
- 40:50Speaker 5: Governor Jim Justice, I don't think that a sitting governor
- 40:53Speaker 5: telling someone to kiss a dog's heine looks very good
- 40:56Speaker 5: on the state of West Virginia. I don't think it
- 40:58Speaker 5: looks good on the governor and his legacy. But of
- 41:01Speaker 5: course we saw a couple of years ago when he
- 41:02Speaker 5: literally turned baby dog around and stuck her rear in
- 41:05Speaker 5: up to the camera. I'm not a fan, but again,
- 41:09Speaker 5: he didn't ask me what I thought. Text says pretty
- 41:11Speaker 5: cool for the bishop to weigh in on moral issues
- 41:13Speaker 5: like physicianissists to death. While the Catholic Archdiocese in La
- 41:17Speaker 5: agreed to pay eight hundred and eighty million dollars to
- 41:20Speaker 5: settle claims with thirteen hundred sex abuse and assault vixims,
- 41:23Speaker 5: the Catholic Church has no moral standing, says a texture.
- 41:29Speaker 3: So there you go, all right.
- 41:31Speaker 5: I want to get this and I want to give
- 41:32Speaker 5: a shout out to my man, Jim Workman, frequent guests

- 42:04Speaker 5: that was stuck in traffic this morning.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I leave my house in Tayes Valley around seven o'clock
- 42:09Speaker 3: every morning. Normally normally arrived to the studio seven point
- 42:13Speaker 3: thirty ish.
- 42:14Speaker 5: This morning, I left my house in Tayes Valley traveling
- 42:18Speaker 5: eastbound to the capital city. I left at seven am
- 42:22Speaker 5: this morning, and I arrived at the studios of WVRC
- 42:26Speaker 5: Media Charleston at eleven eleven Virginia Street East at approximately
- 42:31Speaker 5: eight twenty this morning. It took me an hour and
- 42:35Speaker 5: twenty minutes to get here from Tayes Valley this morning.
- 42:39Speaker 5: One of the reasons was is that I was actually stuck,
- 42:44Speaker 5: like a lot of you were, on the entrance ramp.
- 42:46Speaker 5: Try to work with me here see what I'm you see.
- 42:48Speaker 5: In a couple of months, I'll be on TV so
- 42:50Speaker 5: you'll be able to actually see this. But I sat
- 42:53Speaker 5: on the entrance ramp coming on to sixty four from
- 42:56Speaker 5: Tayes Valley, near where the truck stop is. I sat
- 42:59Speaker 5: there for sh probably thirty minutes or so on that
- 43:05Speaker 5: on that entryway, trying to get on to the interstate. Now,
- 43:09Speaker 5: we all know people that travel that whether you live
- 43:12Speaker 5: in the area or not, people that have traveled that area.
- 43:14Speaker 5: You all know about this widening project that's happening on
- 43:17Speaker 5: I sixty four. Yeah, I mean, it certainly needed, and
- 43:22Speaker 5: they're ahead of schedule. It should be done here. I
- 43:24Speaker 5: think in a couple of weeks. They're just doing some
- 43:26Speaker 5: final things here. But a couple of things were my
- 43:29Speaker 5: takeaways this morning. Number one, and I know I was
- 43:31Speaker 5: talking to Chris Lawrence, who also lives in my area.
- 43:35Speaker 5: But Chris, you know, comes into the station about four
- 43:37Speaker 5: or so every morning. Generally speaking, they over the last
- 43:41Speaker 5: couple of weeks, I think they've had as much as
- 43:43Speaker 5: you know, down to one lane on I sixty four
- 43:46Speaker 5: on eastbound and sometimes I guess probably westbound two coming
- 43:50Speaker 5: into Charleston, you know, and the around the Winfield area
- 43:53Speaker 5: because they they're doing some final touch ups on the on.
- 43:56Speaker 3: The construction project there. And I completely get that. However,
- 44:00Speaker 3: should that not be wrapped up by daylight?
- 44:03Speaker 5: And not because of me, you know, I'm not too
- 44:05Speaker 5: good to wait in traffic, but because of the thousands
- 44:07Speaker 5: of other people that are traveling from Huntington to Charleston,
- 44:10Speaker 5: tays Valley to Charleston, saying albus to Charleston whatever.
- 44:14Speaker 3: I mean.
- 44:14Speaker 5: I literally, when you travel, and when you do something
- 44:17Speaker 5: for four years or so, as I have, you generally
- 44:20Speaker 5: you get to know the cars. You know, somebody's got
- 44:23Speaker 5: a personalized plate or something. You know, an odd color vehicle.
- 44:26Speaker 5: You say, oh, well, there's the guy that drives the
- 44:28Speaker 5: you know, the nineteen seventy eight Ford or whatever. You know,
- 44:31Speaker 5: pass him every day or pass her every day. It
- 44:34Speaker 5: was really frustrating this morning, and so my and again
- 44:38Speaker 5: I'm not a hater of people that are doing these projects.
- 44:41Speaker 5: The only thing I would say is can we not
- 44:43Speaker 5: wrap that up by daylight? And it was incredibly foggy
- 44:47Speaker 5: this morning. Maybe they didn't know it was daylight, or
- 44:49Speaker 5: maybe some things just ran a little over. I get that,
- 44:53Speaker 5: but it is it is very frustrating, you know, when
- 44:57Speaker 5: you're trying to get somewhere in the morning and that happens.
- 45:00Speaker 5: But the biggest thing I wanted to rant a little
- 45:03Speaker 5: bit about this morning was not necessarily that I'm setting
- 45:07Speaker 5: on the Tays Valley exit trying to get onto the
- 45:11Speaker 5: interstate and people two three, four cars ahead of me,
- 45:16Speaker 5: I guess, decide that they are too good to set
- 45:20Speaker 5: in the traffic with the rest of us working stiffs.
- 45:23Speaker 5: So many of them again I'm talking about the Taes
- 45:26Speaker 5: Valley exit, could be at any accent.
- 45:28Speaker 3: Many of them.
- 45:29Speaker 5: Decided to do a complete U turn and go back
- 45:34Speaker 5: in the opposite direction. Now, what could possibly go wrong
- 45:40Speaker 5: at seven am when you're trying to get on I
- 45:42Speaker 5: sixty four. When you have people that decide to do
- 45:47Speaker 5: a complete U turn and go in the opposite direction
- 45:52Speaker 5: in the wrong way. You can imagine, you know where
- 45:55Speaker 5: the truck stop is there? I mean there's no traffic
- 45:58Speaker 5: light because you're in the wrong You're going in the
- 46:00Speaker 5: wrong direction. There's not going to be a traffic light.
- 46:04Speaker 5: And I'm just watching these people, I'll think of what
- 46:06Speaker 5: the hell is wrong with you? Why are you doing this,
- 46:10Speaker 5: what you are doing, it's stupid. Don't be that person.
- 46:15Speaker 5: Don't be that person who possibly cause other accidents because
- 46:18Speaker 5: you think you're too good to set in traffic with
- 46:20Speaker 5: the rest of us. Just wanted to get that stuff
- 46:25Speaker 5: off my chest. Text says we don't have to be

- 49:42Speaker 5: since June. I'll talk a whole lot about things like that,
- 49:46Speaker 5: but I've been battling with something. Started with arm numbness,
- 49:48Speaker 5: and no, I didn't have a stroke. Somebody pointed that
- 49:51Speaker 5: out and you know, didn't get that checked out and whatever.
- 49:53Speaker 5: But they have sort of kind of diagnosed it as
- 49:57Speaker 5: a spinal stenosis and it comes from having really bad posture.
- 50:01Speaker 5: I really wanted to say that I got an injury,
- 50:03Speaker 5: you know, doing something really cool, but apparently it just
- 50:05Speaker 5: comes from fifty four years of really bad posture, driving
- 50:09Speaker 5: too much and spending too much time in front of
- 50:11Speaker 5: the computer keyboard. So I actually had an appointment yesterday
- 50:14Speaker 5: with Travis in the folks. Generations Physical therapy there in Winfield.
- 50:17Speaker 5: They're fantastic. Only one session. They didn't kill me yet.
- 50:21Speaker 5: I got a lot more pt ahead of me to
- 50:23Speaker 5: try to get through this thing. But so far, so
- 50:27Speaker 5: so far, so good. So a big shout out to

- 50:51Speaker 5: on ramps perfectly legitimate, or the zombies will get you.
- 50:55Speaker 5: I guess, I guess. I don't know, Texas. I got
- 50:57Speaker 5: another one for you on traffic. You can get people
- 50:59Speaker 5: going on traffic anytime. I got another one on traffic
- 51:03Speaker 5: for you in the same stretch of road. If you
- 51:04Speaker 5: can't get your car into Starbucks or McDonald's in the
- 51:08Speaker 5: parking lot, don't just sit in the road blocking a lane.
- 51:11Speaker 5: For those of us who don't want a coffee or McMuffin,
- 51:14Speaker 5: be an adult, understand life happens and move on. It's
- 51:17Speaker 5: not okay to block traffic because you want coffee.
- 51:19Speaker 3: Sorry, not sorry. These folks should be taken out back
- 51:22Speaker 3: and beaten. Says the Texture. I have said the same thing.
- 51:26Speaker 5: Texture. It's a real problem. It goes not just in
- 51:28Speaker 5: Tay's Valley. It goes on everywhere. I've had it in
- 51:30Speaker 5: Charleston too. People blocking the road so they can get
- 51:33Speaker 5: their lack of lack of mate at Starbucks or something
- 51:36Speaker 5: from McDonald's.
- 51:37Speaker 3: You do not have the right to block the road. Sorry,

- 52:08Speaker 3: Well, I think she has some answering to do on that. Man,
