- 3:12Speaker 2: So on today's episode, Lindsay and I are talking about
- 3:16Speaker 2: her journey from New York over to LA, how she
- 3:20Speaker 2: made the leap of faith with the help of a
- 3:22Speaker 2: job at Soul Cycle, and how she transitioned out of
- 3:25Speaker 2: that job when her and her friend started building their
- 3:29Speaker 2: almost thirty empire.
- 3:31Speaker 1: We talked about how taking that.
- 3:32Speaker 2: Big step wasn't easy, and how so much of what
- 3:35Speaker 2: drives her today is trusting her gut to follow her dreams.
- 3:39Speaker 2: For anyone who's interested in starting a podcast, Lindsay's input
- 3:42Speaker 2: into the whole space is so valuable. We talk about
- 3:46Speaker 2: the little steps that they took to get up and
- 3:48Speaker 2: running and the chaos that ensues these days as the
- 3:51Speaker 2: show has seriously grown. I kid you not. I walked
- 3:54Speaker 2: out of the apartment that Lindsay and I reported in
- 3:57Speaker 2: Los Angeles and I called my friend and I said,
- 4:00Speaker 2: I am putting it into the world that within the
- 4:02Speaker 2: next five years, I too, am going to have this
- 4:05Speaker 2: beautiful space and a room that's dedicated to being a
- 4:08Speaker 2: podcast studio. And just her energy is contagious and again
- 4:12Speaker 2: just girl crushing to the max. Almost thirty has grown
- 4:16Speaker 2: into this global community. They have retreats and they've been
- 4:19Speaker 2: on tour and I just see what Lindsay and Christa
- 4:22Speaker 2: are doing and I have so much inspiration to follow
- 4:25Speaker 2: a path like theirs. So a huge thank you it's
- 4:27Speaker 2: to Lindsay for sitting.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Down with me.
- 4:29Speaker 2: I feel personally inspired and I know that you will
- 4:32Speaker 2: as well. As always, I love seeing you guys interact
- 4:36Speaker 2: with the show on Instagram and Twitter at Emilia Badi
- 4:39Speaker 2: at Hurdle podcast. The last week of the lace ups
- 4:43Speaker 2: on Instagram absolutely.
- 4:45Speaker 1: Blew my mind.
- 4:46Speaker 2: It is so awesome to be part of the hurdle community.
- 4:49Speaker 2: Thank you for inspiring me to do what I do
- 4:52Speaker 2: every single day. If you have a hurdle moment of
- 4:55Speaker 2: your own to share you just want to say hi,
- 4:57Speaker 2: you can always reach out to me over email Emily
- 5:00Speaker 2: at hurdle dot us.
- 5:02Speaker 1: With that, let's get to hurdling today. I'm sitting down
- 5:13Speaker 1: with Lindsay Simsick.
- 5:14Speaker 2: She is the co founder of almost thirty and I
- 5:18Speaker 2: feel like I could like throw out a bunch of
- 5:19Speaker 2: other accolades, but.
- 5:21Speaker 1: It's it's the biggest one. It's like the multi hyphenice
- 5:24Speaker 1: culture that we live in.
- 5:26Speaker 2: I feel the need to start off by asking you,
- 5:29Speaker 2: how are you really good?
- 5:32Speaker 1: One? Yeah? Uh yeah. I don't think we ask each
- 5:35Speaker 1: other that a lot, and I haven't been asked that today,
- 5:38Speaker 1: so thank you. I'm I feel like two people. Yeah,
- 5:43Speaker 1: why is that? So? I'm feeling I have quite a
- 5:47Speaker 1: bit of anxiety and I'm also super happy, so it's simultaneously.
- 5:55Speaker 1: It's a wild day. It just is, you know what
- 5:57Speaker 1: I mean, And I'm trying I feel feel like, I've
- 6:00Speaker 1: met my anxiety later in life. You know, as a kid,
- 6:04Speaker 1: I wasn't that anxious at all to my knowledge, and yeah,
- 6:11Speaker 1: I've just met it later in life. So it's been
- 6:12Speaker 1: really interesting.
- 6:13Speaker 2: Yeah, it's funny because I'm sure you can share the sentiment.
- 6:18Speaker 2: I've heard you talk about it before on the podcast,
- 6:20Speaker 2: and we'll get into what almost thirty is and everything.
- 6:22Speaker 2: But just so much of building something and showing up
- 6:30Speaker 2: the way that we do is showing up for other people.
- 6:33Speaker 2: So sometimes it can feel like days before someone asks
- 6:39Speaker 2: you how are you, or before you like stop to
- 6:42Speaker 2: take inventory of what's going on in your own ecosystem.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Completely, you know, And I think especially as founders. You know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: Kristin and I we started the business quite soon after
- 6:53Speaker 1: our friendship began, so we've gotten to know each other
- 6:57Speaker 1: as the business, as the podcast, the brand has a vault.
- 7:00Speaker 1: So I feel like both of us aren't checking in
- 7:06Speaker 1: with each other and ourselves as often as we should.
- 7:09Speaker 1: And that's not knocking either of us. It's more just
- 7:11Speaker 1: like we have so much to do and feel this
- 7:16Speaker 1: undying responsibility to Almost thirty, to the community, to our team.
- 7:22Speaker 1: Now we have a team, so to take a moment
- 7:26Speaker 1: and be like, hey, how are you doing? How are
- 7:28Speaker 1: you really feels like, oh, that might take up too
- 7:31Speaker 1: much time. Let's keep going. So we have to check
- 7:33Speaker 1: ourselves because I think it's really important, really.
- 7:36Speaker 2: So important, so important. So tell me what is almost thirty?
- 7:41Speaker 1: So almost thirty was born during my transition Christa's transition
- 7:46Speaker 1: from our twenties to our thirties. So it started out
- 7:49Speaker 1: as a conversation between us, and we had become fast
- 7:54Speaker 1: friends after we were introduced during a time when she
- 7:57Speaker 1: was auditioning for Soul Cycle. I was a Soul Cycle instructors,
- 8:01Speaker 1: so I was trying to give her some advice, and
- 8:04Speaker 1: after she didn't end up making it, she and her
- 8:07Speaker 1: boyfriend decided to move to LA. She was in New
- 8:09Speaker 1: York at the time, and she just started coming to
- 8:11Speaker 1: my classes and we started hanging out and having these
- 8:14Speaker 1: really deep conversations that I wasn't having with most people
- 8:18Speaker 1: that I hung out with. And so, you know, she
- 8:21Speaker 1: came to me one day She's like, do you think
- 8:23Speaker 1: we could start a podcast about like what we've been
- 8:25Speaker 1: talking about? And I'm always down to get creative and
- 8:30Speaker 1: work on projects. I was like, yeah, absolutely, So that's
- 8:33Speaker 1: when it was born, and we just it was never
- 8:37Speaker 1: a question as to whether we were going to show
- 8:38Speaker 1: up for it, you know what I mean. So we
- 8:40Speaker 1: started on our closet floors. She would come over, I
- 8:43Speaker 1: would come over, and we would just have a conversations
- 8:46Speaker 1: and literally in the closet on a recorder that was
- 8:49Speaker 1: like twenty bucks from Amazon, and just what we didn't
- 8:53Speaker 1: know was that we were practicing our conversations and really
- 8:57Speaker 1: fine tuning our chemistry and all of that. So it
- 9:01Speaker 1: was really a cool time. It was about six months
- 9:03Speaker 1: of that. Most of those none of those have really
- 9:06Speaker 1: reached the airwaves, but we were. It was really cool.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I think it was sending a message to the universe
- 9:11Speaker 1: that was like this is We're serious, this is something.
- 9:14Speaker 1: And we launched September first, twenty sixteen, and now, you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: quickly there was a community that formed a global community
- 9:24Speaker 1: mainly of women, people who identify as women twenty five
- 9:27Speaker 1: to forty who are conscious, curious, open, and just like us,
- 9:32Speaker 1: going through some shit and really wanting to feel like
- 9:34Speaker 1: themselves as they do that and show up as themselves,
- 9:37Speaker 1: not as anyone else, and feel really confident and supported.
- 9:41Speaker 1: And we've been on tour and just built the business
- 9:46Speaker 1: in exponential ways and are super, super proud. But the
- 9:50Speaker 1: core of it is just making an impact with women
- 9:52Speaker 1: and making sure that they feel less alone.
- 9:55Speaker 2: Yeah, and I mean, please, that's a huge part of
- 9:58Speaker 2: my mo And it must be really comforting and sometimes
- 10:03Speaker 2: scary and just also awesome to be able to do
- 10:06Speaker 2: this with the woman that you call one of your
- 10:09Speaker 2: dearest friends.
- 10:10Speaker 1: Yeah. Yeah, I'm so lucky. Yeah.
- 10:11Speaker 2: So, I mean you said you built this when you
- 10:14Speaker 2: were both transitioning into this, so obviously there's a life
- 10:17Speaker 2: before transition. So let's dial it back. And you were
- 10:22Speaker 2: in New York before you came here. But where did
- 10:24Speaker 2: you grow up?
- 10:24Speaker 1: So? I grew up just north of Philadelphia in Bucks County, Pennsylvania,
- 10:29Speaker 1: a little town called Newtown. And I was the oldest
- 10:33Speaker 1: of four kids. I yeah, I was just kind of
- 10:37Speaker 1: a care free kid, had a lot of imaginary friends.
- 10:41Speaker 1: I was always singing and dancing and putting on plays
- 10:45Speaker 1: and I had little characters and all that stuff, and
- 10:49Speaker 1: you know, pretty active and played lots of sports. I
- 10:53Speaker 1: went to an all girls, private Catholic school eventually, which
- 10:55Speaker 1: kind of you know, impacted me in a big way.
- 10:59Speaker 1: Went on to you go to Boston College and spent
- 11:03Speaker 1: my time up there, which was a blast. I learned
- 11:06Speaker 1: so much. And then after that I moved to New
- 11:09Speaker 1: York for almost five years, and I thought I was
- 11:12Speaker 1: going to be in New York forever. I was like,
- 11:14Speaker 1: I'm going to raise my kids there.
- 11:16Speaker 2: How I don't know. On the Upper East Side. Only
- 11:20Speaker 2: in an elevator building easy. You cannot do it without
- 11:22Speaker 2: an elevator. Need to get the.
- 11:24Speaker 1: Strummer up and down.
- 11:25Speaker 2: And like you'll take them to Central Park and it'll
- 11:27Speaker 2: be just like giving them a backyard.
- 11:29Speaker 1: Of course, of course we've all thought about it. Man.
- 11:33Speaker 2: Yeah, wait, but how did the all girls Catholic High
- 11:36Speaker 2: School definitely impact you?
- 11:38Speaker 1: So I went there in seventh grade because my parents
- 11:42Speaker 1: were like, you have a talent theater, singing, all the things,
- 11:48Speaker 1: and so if you want to pursue it and really
- 11:51Speaker 1: hone your talent, like this school is known for their theater,
- 11:56Speaker 1: and you know, I went there. I visited. It felt
- 11:59Speaker 1: kind of like a prison and there was like a convent.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Everything was like brown, like color, do you know what
- 12:04Speaker 1: I mean? Like the walls, the bricks, like there was
- 12:07Speaker 1: no color. I was like, oh my god, I'm scared
- 12:11Speaker 1: you know, nuns everywhere and so who, by the way,
- 12:16Speaker 1: were the sweetest and some of my favorite people during
- 12:19Speaker 1: that time of my life. But I was like, oh god,
- 12:23Speaker 1: but this girl who showed me around was pretty lively
- 12:25Speaker 1: and kind and like was like going to take me
- 12:28Speaker 1: under her wig. She's like, I hope you come here,
- 12:30Speaker 1: like you'll be my best friend. I was like, sweet.
- 12:33Speaker 1: So I arrived in seventh grade, we become best friends.
- 12:36Speaker 1: Things are good. I get involved in the theater. I'm
- 12:39Speaker 1: cast in the show all this stuff, and that same
- 12:43Speaker 1: girl had been there since kindergarten and when I next
- 12:48Speaker 1: the next year, I think rumblings had started before that.
- 12:51Speaker 1: But the next year I was cast as Peter and
- 12:53Speaker 1: Peter Pan. So I got the lead of the whole
- 12:55Speaker 1: high school and had to cut my hair and do
- 12:59Speaker 1: all the things, and she like turned against me because
- 13:03Speaker 1: I like got the lead and all this stuff. So
- 13:05Speaker 1: it was a it was a bullying situation, verbal bullying.
- 13:08Speaker 1: And she told everyone in my class in my grade,
- 13:10Speaker 1: which was twenty three girls, very small, not to talk
- 13:14Speaker 1: to me and if they did, she would make her
- 13:16Speaker 1: life help. So you know, to an eighth grader, that's
- 13:19Speaker 1: that's intense and they're not going to talk to me.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So they didn't. And I was, besides being on stage
- 13:24Speaker 1: like basically mute at school the entire year, and that
- 13:28Speaker 1: was not my personality. But I no one talked to me.
- 13:33Speaker 1: So yeah, it was a really transformative year because I yeah,
- 13:41Speaker 1: I was definitely depressed. I was really confused. I was
- 13:48Speaker 1: confused as to why she had targeted me. But it
- 13:51Speaker 1: was also an amazing year because it completely changed the
- 13:54Speaker 1: trajectory of like my performance life. It was so it
- 13:57Speaker 1: was like two things happening at once, kind of like
- 13:59Speaker 1: how I today, where I'm like, I'm anxious and I'm happy,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and yeah, it's funny how the world works and God
- 14:10Speaker 1: just kind of puts people in your life for a reason.
- 14:12Speaker 1: I think she taught me so much about how I
- 14:14Speaker 1: would want to treat people for the rest of my life.
- 14:17Speaker 1: And also that she was probably going through a lot
- 14:20Speaker 1: of pain to be able to, you know, cause pain
- 14:23Speaker 1: for others. So I know that now, and it's funny.
- 14:26Speaker 1: Like fast forward, when I was living in New York,
- 14:29Speaker 1: I was working at a bunch of bars and she
- 14:34Speaker 1: I hadn't heard of her seen her in oh, I
- 14:37Speaker 1: don't know, seventy years and all of a sudden, I
- 14:40Speaker 1: got my schedule for this one bar I worked at
- 14:42Speaker 1: and it had her name on it. Now, I was like,
- 14:44Speaker 1: are you joking me? Like the chances so this full
- 14:49Speaker 1: circle moment where we see each other again, and she
- 14:52Speaker 1: like messaged me before. She's like, I want to address
- 14:55Speaker 1: this before we see each other. I'm so sorry for
- 14:57Speaker 1: everything I've ever done to you, Like I hope you
- 14:59Speaker 1: can forgive me. I'm not that same person all this stuff.
- 15:03Speaker 1: And I was like, I forgive you, yeah, you know,
- 15:05Speaker 1: And how powerful is that?
- 15:06Speaker 2: Like that you are in a place now where you
- 15:09Speaker 2: understand the beauty of being able to forgive like that,
- 15:13Speaker 2: and you understand why at that time she treated you
- 15:16Speaker 2: that way.
- 15:17Speaker 1: Yes.
- 15:18Speaker 2: I got a message from a girl I was friends with,
- 15:21Speaker 2: probably like four or five years ago, and I was
- 15:24Speaker 2: dating this guy and it didn't work out, and I
- 15:27Speaker 2: told her everything. She was one of my dearest friends
- 15:29Speaker 2: at the time, and I found out like two weeks
- 15:31Speaker 2: later that they had started to see each other.
- 15:34Speaker 1: Oh wow. And I had never.
- 15:35Speaker 2: Truly been in like a friend breakup before, but there
- 15:39Speaker 2: was just no space for that type of relationship or
- 15:44Speaker 2: someone that would treat me in my heart that way,
- 15:46Speaker 2: and so like I just had to part ways and
- 15:48Speaker 2: I hadn't spoken to her in four or five years,
- 15:50Speaker 2: and she messaged me the other day out of left
- 15:52Speaker 2: field and just apologized, and I was like, that was
- 15:56Speaker 2: really beautiful that you.
- 15:57Speaker 1: Thought to message me.
- 15:59Speaker 2: And of course, like all is forgiven, like you know,
- 16:02Speaker 2: you take time and reflect, and we're all going through
- 16:05Speaker 2: our own shit. Definitely, it never goes right the first time,
- 16:08Speaker 2: definitely rarely.
- 16:09Speaker 1: Anyway, Yeah, that's so beautiful. Yeah, And I think like
- 16:11Speaker 1: we're being sent those moments a lot more than maybe
- 16:14Speaker 1: we notice, you know. So I'm I'm very I'm very
- 16:20Speaker 1: aware of moments that like God sends us or whatever
- 16:23Speaker 1: you believe in universe, Like it's like, oh wow, okay,
- 16:27Speaker 1: full circle lesson totally.
- 16:29Speaker 2: So you are in New York and you're in New
- 16:32Speaker 2: York to pursue dot.
- 16:34Speaker 1: Yeah. I was in New York to pursue I wanted
- 16:37Speaker 1: to be a Broadway star, you know. I really wanted
- 16:39Speaker 1: to be on Broadways sing and that was what I
- 16:43Speaker 1: had always wanted to be since I was little, and
- 16:46Speaker 1: so I had to like make sure I could pay
- 16:52Speaker 1: my rent. Yeah, and I basically worked at I think
- 16:57Speaker 1: one time it was like three different bars, two or
- 17:00Speaker 1: three different bars, and then you know, I made a
- 17:04Speaker 1: lot of money. I made a lot of money doing that,
- 17:07Speaker 1: but it also like sucked the life out of me
- 17:11Speaker 1: and the soul out of me a little bit. It's
- 17:13Speaker 1: kind of a dark industry at times. I met some
- 17:15Speaker 1: of my best friends in that industry, Like I'm still
- 17:19Speaker 1: best friends with them to this day. But it's kind
- 17:22Speaker 1: of a dark time. That's why you need to find
- 17:24Speaker 1: really good people. Sometimes management is a little dark. There's
- 17:27Speaker 1: some shit, shady shit that goes on, and so you
- 17:30Speaker 1: really have to protect yourself. You have to protect your energy.
- 17:33Speaker 1: Like if you're gonna be working late at night, you're
- 17:36Speaker 1: going to be serving people alcohol. They're probably doing drugs
- 17:39Speaker 1: as well. Sometimes you know, I'm making assumptions and it's
- 17:42Speaker 1: not everyone. I'm just saying there's things that happen when
- 17:45Speaker 1: people drink and it's at night and they're coming up
- 17:48Speaker 1: to work and you know they're not going home to
- 17:51Speaker 1: their family. Like all this stuff. It's pretty dark. So
- 17:55Speaker 1: I was like taking on that energy. I was really
- 17:57Speaker 1: taking that in to be careful, but yeah, I I
- 18:03Speaker 1: was in. I was doing those three bars, and then
- 18:07Speaker 1: I found fit modeling. So fit modeling is like the
- 18:10Speaker 1: non glamorous job behind the scenes. It's like non glamorous
- 18:15Speaker 1: modeling for brands. And I had a friend who did it,
- 18:19Speaker 1: and she's like, you'd be great for it because you're
- 18:21Speaker 1: kind of you kind of burre this size whatever whatever
- 18:24Speaker 1: it's they look for, like quote unquote an average size,
- 18:27Speaker 1: which you know isn't average at all. And so I
- 18:33Speaker 1: I I booked a job and I kept that job
- 18:36Speaker 1: for like three years, and that that also pays really well,
- 18:39Speaker 1: so that that brought me out of the bars. So
- 18:41Speaker 1: I was able to quit the bars do fit modeling
- 18:43Speaker 1: full time. And then while I was fit modeling for
- 18:47Speaker 1: this brand, which you know, it's not hard work, it's
- 18:51Speaker 1: just it's tedious. It's like you're you're in there for
- 18:54Speaker 1: like five six hours trying on clothes, like and I
- 18:58Speaker 1: worked the person who was like the head hauncho was
- 19:02Speaker 1: like very difficult, so I always had to just kind
- 19:06Speaker 1: of take temperatures of rooms. You know, it was a
- 19:09Speaker 1: lot of nothing, which kind of was a test on
- 19:14Speaker 1: my mind because I'm like, what am I doing? Am
- 19:16Speaker 1: I doing? What am I doing making money? And then
- 19:21Speaker 1: during that time I found soul cycle so I would ride.
- 19:26Speaker 1: I found Soul Cycle, I think a little bit when
- 19:28Speaker 1: I was in the bars because it would help me
- 19:30Speaker 1: wake up in the morning. So I was so tired
- 19:32Speaker 1: and I have to like good auditions and things during
- 19:34Speaker 1: the day, and had gone to bed at four because
- 19:37Speaker 1: that's when I got out of work. And I found
- 19:40Speaker 1: Soul Cycle to wake me up and inspire me. And
- 19:42Speaker 1: it did. And I was riding on a regular basis
- 19:45Speaker 1: but draining my bank account because it's so expensive. And
- 19:50Speaker 1: the instructors I was taking from noticed me because I
- 19:55Speaker 1: was riding like Front Real Center and they're like, would
- 19:58Speaker 1: you want to ride podium? I was like yeah, sure,
- 20:00Speaker 1: and that that allowed me to ride for free, so
- 20:04Speaker 1: they would have me ride their podium. And then they
- 20:06Speaker 1: asked me to audition. They're like, why don't you audition?
- 20:08Speaker 1: I was like, I don't have time. I literally don't
- 20:09Speaker 1: have time. I have fit modeling, Like how would I
- 20:12Speaker 1: even do the training program? That's crazy? Like ah, and
- 20:15Speaker 1: they're like, what's the first thing that could happen? Just
- 20:16Speaker 1: audition and see. So I did and I made it
- 20:21Speaker 1: and I was like, oh what Now I made it?
- 20:24Speaker 1: So like now I'm going to go through the training program,
- 20:27Speaker 1: but how and I just made it work. I told
- 20:30Speaker 1: my fit modeling gig, I was like, listen, I can
- 20:32Speaker 1: fit during this time, this time whatever, and somehow I
- 20:36Speaker 1: made it work. What's going on with like your aspiration
- 20:39Speaker 1: to be on Broadway at this point? Yeah, it's moving
- 20:42Speaker 1: further and by the way, no, it's always there. And
- 20:44Speaker 1: you know what, what I've learned too is the trajectory
- 20:49Speaker 1: of my life is never ever going to be how
- 20:51Speaker 1: I planned. And if if I if I fight it,
- 20:55Speaker 1: there's going to be a really messy fight, you know
- 20:58Speaker 1: what I mean, It's just going to take too much energy.
- 21:01Speaker 1: And so my priority was, Okay, if I want to
- 21:06Speaker 1: stay in the city, I have to like pay my way,
- 21:09Speaker 1: like and how am I going to make money? This
- 21:11Speaker 1: is how I'm going to make money. And so what
- 21:13Speaker 1: I really did was leverage every job that I was
- 21:17Speaker 1: in the bars, the fit modeling soul cycle, where I
- 21:21Speaker 1: leveraged the relationships that I made. I would leverage my time,
- 21:26Speaker 1: Like if I had that free time, it's about either
- 21:29Speaker 1: like memorizing lines, It's about sending emails, it's about submitting
- 21:33Speaker 1: myself for auditions. All this stuff. I was hustling, but yeah,
- 21:38Speaker 1: life has such a different plan and so soul cycle.
- 21:42Speaker 1: I became an instructor. I was living in New York
- 21:46Speaker 1: teaching for three months. And after three months of me teaching,
- 21:52Speaker 1: they asked me very randomly, would you be interested in
- 21:55Speaker 1: moving to LA. We want you to teach there. We
- 21:57Speaker 1: want you to open up the Newport studio. And I
- 22:00Speaker 1: was like yes, Like I didn't even hesitate. I was
- 22:04Speaker 1: like yeah. Meanwhile, like, I'm I'm living with my best friend.
- 22:07Speaker 1: I would have to leave him. Like I have all
- 22:09Speaker 1: my family on the East Coast. I've never been a
- 22:12Speaker 1: home body, so I love my family. I just like
- 22:15Speaker 1: I'm not that type. So yeah. A month later, I
- 22:19Speaker 1: was in LA and I didn't realize that Newport. I
- 22:23Speaker 1: was like, oh, yeah, Newport whatever, And I looked on
- 22:26Speaker 1: the map. I was like, fifty miles from LA. It's
- 22:29Speaker 1: kind of fun. Yeah. I was like, they tricked me.
- 22:33Speaker 1: They kind of did tricked me, but whatever. But I
- 22:35Speaker 1: opened that studio and it was incredible, Like just to
- 22:39Speaker 1: be able to be the main instructor at that studio
- 22:43Speaker 1: and really cultivated community got me ready to cultivate a community.
- 22:48Speaker 1: A little bit later, and I just I found my
- 22:53Speaker 1: power and I don't mean power by power over people.
- 22:57Speaker 1: It was just like standing in my power, you know,
- 23:00Speaker 1: speaking my truth and just like finding my flow there.
- 23:02Speaker 1: And it was so amazing. And then I eventually started
- 23:05Speaker 1: teaching up at La More and just in La So, yeah,
- 23:09Speaker 1: Soul Cycle was an incredible four and a half years
- 23:13Speaker 1: that just again changed the trajectory of my life, helped
- 23:18Speaker 1: me to find Krista me Christa. So the audition process
- 23:22Speaker 1: for Soul Cycle is so rigorous. Yeah, and I think
- 23:26Speaker 1: it's even more rigorous now, to be honest. Like when
- 23:28Speaker 1: I auditioned, you know, there's an initial audition in a
- 23:31Speaker 1: room with like thirty other people auditioning. There's like four
- 23:35Speaker 1: or five you know, big timer instructors and people on
- 23:38Speaker 1: the some sort of department board or whatever I don't
- 23:42Speaker 1: even know, and they're watching you very closely. It's like
- 23:45Speaker 1: very like straight faced at first, but then they like
- 23:48Speaker 1: kind of warm up and get into it. But yeah,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I don't even remember what I wrote to It was
- 23:54Speaker 1: a wild time. I don't even know if I could
- 23:57Speaker 1: really ride that well. But I had personality, you know,
- 24:00Speaker 1: and I could really engage a room, and so that's
- 24:03Speaker 1: what they were looking for at the time, and yeah,
- 24:06Speaker 1: the ten week after that, they do like another interview,
- 24:08Speaker 1: like I sit down interview and then once I made it,
- 24:12Speaker 1: there's a ten week training program four hours a day,
- 24:16Speaker 1: four days.
- 24:17Speaker 2: A week, casual, casual, nothing, you know, time consuming, not
- 24:22Speaker 2: at all. I mean when you moved So when you
- 24:24Speaker 2: moved out here, obviously you're in Newport at first, but
- 24:26Speaker 2: when you start teaching more in LA, does the acting
- 24:30Speaker 2: bug kind of come back at you?
- 24:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it's always, It's always there. I've been thinking. I
- 24:35Speaker 1: think about it often because I have to remind myself
- 24:40Speaker 1: that what I'm doing now with the podcast is all
- 24:44Speaker 1: a part of this just grand plan, just like it
- 24:48Speaker 1: is for Krista too, Like I think the podcast is
- 24:53Speaker 1: a highlight and will be a highlight of my life,
- 24:55Speaker 1: you know, And I don't want to say that like
- 24:58Speaker 1: I'm not going to act again because I have podcast.
- 25:01Speaker 1: I think that I'm going to have opportunities to act
- 25:03Speaker 1: and write and saying I'm making music right now, like
- 25:08Speaker 1: it's just not happening in the order that I planned
- 25:10Speaker 1: or the way that I planned. And the less I
- 25:13Speaker 1: fight it and the more that I just pour into
- 25:15Speaker 1: the things that are in front of me and excited about,
- 25:19Speaker 1: you know, these unexpected things that I never thought would
- 25:22Speaker 1: be my life the happier I am.
- 25:24Speaker 2: Did you have a time where you were so overly
- 25:27Speaker 2: frustrated that the path wasn't what you envision that helped
- 25:30Speaker 2: you get to this mental state?
- 25:32Speaker 1: Yeah, for sure, I'm trying to think of like when
- 25:37Speaker 1: that was specifically. I definitely think there were points in
- 25:42Speaker 1: New York, and then there were points when I came
- 25:45Speaker 1: out here to LA and I get tripped up when
- 25:50Speaker 1: I think about the people who not only have helped
- 25:56Speaker 1: and supported me, like my parents mainly my family, but
- 26:00Speaker 1: they also thought my life was going to be a
- 26:02Speaker 1: certain way and I had to let go of living
- 26:12Speaker 1: up to what they expected of my life because I'm
- 26:16Speaker 1: going to show them that it's going to be even better.
- 26:18Speaker 1: And it's not about showing them in a way that's like,
- 26:21Speaker 1: it's like I want them to feel really good too
- 26:25Speaker 1: about like the way they are as parents and people,
- 26:29Speaker 1: and I just want them to I want them to
- 26:31Speaker 1: be proud of me, you know what I mean. And
- 26:33Speaker 1: that's when I get tripped up sometimes because I'm like shit,
- 26:36Speaker 1: like I haven't you know, been on an audition an
- 26:39Speaker 1: X amount of time and what's happening. But I know
- 26:43Speaker 1: in the deepest part of my soul that like the
- 26:46Speaker 1: way my career is happening is is new, meaning like
- 26:53Speaker 1: it hasn't been done this way before, and I'm really
- 26:56Speaker 1: excited by it now. You know, I'm kind of like
- 27:00Speaker 1: new Paradigm'm kind of paving not paying me the way
- 27:02Speaker 1: because I don't know who's behind me. In terms of that,
- 27:05Speaker 1: I'm just like, oh, like I don't have anyone to
- 27:07Speaker 1: look to for this because I'm doing it for the
- 27:10Speaker 1: first time. So this podcasting thing, like I know, will
- 27:14Speaker 1: just give us a larger audience. And if say I
- 27:17Speaker 1: make music and they want to listen to my music, amazing,
- 27:20Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I just for me, this
- 27:22Speaker 1: is my intention, like one like to impact people in
- 27:28Speaker 1: a positive way, and I want to relate to people
- 27:32Speaker 1: like I want to make them feel like them, like
- 27:33Speaker 1: they can be themselves, like they don't have to be
- 27:37Speaker 1: alone and what they're going through. And I always want
- 27:39Speaker 1: to be creating, you know, whether in the podcast or
- 27:42Speaker 1: outside of the podcast, Like that gives me life. If
- 27:45Speaker 1: my music never makes me money, I'm good. Yeah, I
- 27:48Speaker 1: feel that you're like speaking, do I want to make
- 27:50Speaker 1: money doing music, of course, but like I'm not in
- 27:53Speaker 1: it to like make a bajillion dollars. I think I
- 27:58Speaker 1: think the stars will allign and where I will get
- 28:01Speaker 1: beautiful opportunities to share my music and if that is
- 28:05Speaker 1: able to be a part of part of my income, beautiful.
- 28:09Speaker 1: But I'm not going to be upset, you know what
- 28:11Speaker 1: i mean. Yeah, it doesn't happen that way.
- 28:12Speaker 2: I mean, you're speaking to my soul on the relationships
- 28:15Speaker 2: front and the communication front and like just opening up
- 28:19Speaker 2: a space where people feel safe to be themselves. It's
- 28:23Speaker 2: the most empowering and beautiful thing when you can look
- 28:26Speaker 2: at someone and you can tell by the way that
- 28:29Speaker 2: their eyes listen that they feel comfortable.
- 28:32Speaker 1: With you totally. So that's really special.
- 28:35Speaker 2: So you meet Christa and she's auditioning for Soul Psychle
- 28:39Speaker 2: and how does that go for her?
- 28:41Speaker 1: So she auditioned twice if I'm remembering correctly, and she
- 28:47Speaker 1: didn't end up making it, And it's just funny because
- 28:49Speaker 1: you know, honestly, like she should have made it. Yeah,
- 28:53Speaker 1: and I liken it too. It's like when you're trying
- 28:57Speaker 1: to get into college and they're looking for like an
- 28:59Speaker 1: obo player, do you know what I mean, and you're
- 29:01Speaker 1: not a Nobo player and you're like, but I got
- 29:03Speaker 1: straight a's in this and that and whatever. It's just
- 29:06Speaker 1: like what they were looking for at the time, and
- 29:08Speaker 1: she would have been an incredible instructor, but like then
- 29:13Speaker 1: we probably wouldn't have started the podcast. Yeah, so like
- 29:16Speaker 1: it all just worked out so perfectly and she's really
- 29:21Speaker 1: found her purpose.
- 29:23Speaker 2: Talk to me about starting the podcast aside from the
- 29:26Speaker 2: six months that you guys sat in the closet and
- 29:28Speaker 2: played pretend like the actual launch of the pod.
- 29:32Speaker 1: Yeah, it was all about consistency. You know. We made
- 29:37Speaker 1: sure to have five to eight episodes in the bucket
- 29:42Speaker 1: to make sure we had that lined up. I think
- 29:45Speaker 1: we released three at once in the beginning so people
- 29:49Speaker 1: can get a taste of, like what's going on with
- 29:51Speaker 1: almost thirty. Naming the show was interesting because you know,
- 29:55Speaker 1: we're not almost thirty anymore, so people ask us all
- 29:58Speaker 1: the time, Okay, so you're not a missurity what's happening?
- 30:01Speaker 1: But you know, we like to confuse people and starting
- 30:06Speaker 1: the pod, we had no idea, no idea what we
- 30:10Speaker 1: were doing, but we trusted each other, we respected each other,
- 30:15Speaker 1: we believed in our idea, and the impact that it
- 30:19Speaker 1: can make. And we just showed up for it every
- 30:22Speaker 1: single day without fail, every single day. And at the time,
- 30:27Speaker 1: Krista had quit her full time job to pursue blogging
- 30:31Speaker 1: full time at one point, like very very early on
- 30:34Speaker 1: in the podcast, and it was rough. It was really rough,
- 30:38Speaker 1: because you know, she's an incredible blogger, such a good writer,
- 30:43Speaker 1: and so so funny and relatable, but it's hard. It's
- 30:47Speaker 1: hard to make a living, a full blown living out
- 30:50Speaker 1: the gate and so what she recommends now is like
- 30:52Speaker 1: having that full time job and doing the blog on
- 30:54Speaker 1: the side until you gain that momentum and all of that.
- 30:58Speaker 1: But yeah, she was blocking full time we were doing
- 31:02Speaker 1: the podcast, but it allowed us to have that time
- 31:04Speaker 1: to record, you know what I mean. We wouldn't have
- 31:06Speaker 1: had that time if she had a full time job
- 31:07Speaker 1: in the beginning. So it was showing up every single
- 31:10Speaker 1: day we were recording. And because aside.
- 31:16Speaker 2: From this right now, you are teaching at Soul Cycle
- 31:19Speaker 2: and you're doing the pod.
- 31:20Speaker 1: Yeah, okay, exactly, I was doing some fit modeling out
- 31:23Speaker 1: here in LA I'm always like hustling a little something
- 31:25Speaker 1: on the side. But yeah, it was the pod, and
- 31:28Speaker 1: it was soul cycle. But I'm teaching fifteen classes a week,
- 31:32Speaker 1: riding every one of them, traveling to Newport for three
- 31:35Speaker 1: of those days, which is at least an hour each way.
- 31:39Speaker 1: I mean, I would hustle back from class, we'd have
- 31:41Speaker 1: an interview, like it was just like wild times, like
- 31:45Speaker 1: really wild. Not always fun, but we just did not
- 31:51Speaker 1: give up. It was not an option. So we released
- 31:54Speaker 1: once a week and then maybe like six or seven
- 31:58Speaker 1: months in, we pitched some brands that Christa had worked
- 32:01Speaker 1: with for her blog to advertise on the podcast, and
- 32:04Speaker 1: they said yes. So those were our first advertiser advertisers.
- 32:07Speaker 1: It was really exciting, you know, to make a little
- 32:10Speaker 1: to break even. We had put a lot of money
- 32:11Speaker 1: into whether it was renting a studio because we rented
- 32:15Speaker 1: a studio for a little bit, then getting equipment, paying
- 32:20Speaker 1: people to edit the show, paying people to like run
- 32:22Speaker 1: this soundboard at the studio, because we didn't know what
- 32:25Speaker 1: the hell we were doing to travel to you know,
- 32:29Speaker 1: all these things that we were paying for, which you know,
- 32:32Speaker 1: we didn't mind. It was just what we wanted to do.
- 32:35Speaker 1: But we broke We started to break even, which was
- 32:38Speaker 1: really really nice, and yeah, it just grew organically from there,
- 32:42Speaker 1: and we started to meet our community in person pretty
- 32:44Speaker 1: early on.
- 32:45Speaker 2: Yeah, So I think that's really interesting because that's something
- 32:47Speaker 2: that I've started to do as well, with like maybe
- 32:50Speaker 2: an event every quarter or so, whether it's here in
- 32:54Speaker 2: New York or wherever I'm traveling too, which is always
- 32:57Speaker 2: just so again like that IRL.
- 32:59Speaker 1: Connection and nothing is like it for you.
- 33:04Speaker 2: What interests me specifically is like I have a background
- 33:08Speaker 2: in editorial and writing for magazines and developing like so
- 33:12Speaker 2: many relationships for the past six or seven years where
- 33:15Speaker 2: I've been exclusively in the wellness industry, so a lot
- 33:20Speaker 2: of connects. Yeah, So when you're pitching your new podcast
- 33:24Speaker 2: and finding guests, how are you positioning yourself? What are
- 33:30Speaker 2: you saying to get your foot in the door, Because
- 33:32Speaker 2: I mean, I know the power of an ask, and
- 33:35Speaker 2: I think that's the first thing that everyone always says.
- 33:37Speaker 2: It's like I just asked, Yeah, but you had to
- 33:40Speaker 2: do a lot of digging to like find out who
- 33:42Speaker 2: to ask.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Yeah, you have to do you have to do your research.
- 33:47Speaker 1: And I think you know asking your friends being like hey,
- 33:50Speaker 1: do you know anyone do you know anyone who works
- 33:53Speaker 1: for a brand like in the health of mode of
- 33:55Speaker 1: space or what have you or do you know anyone
- 34:00Speaker 1: who knows so and so, Like just really asking people
- 34:02Speaker 1: who you care about and who you respect and who
- 34:06Speaker 1: will support you. You'll never know until you ask, and
- 34:11Speaker 1: then doing your research like on LinkedIn, like who handles
- 34:14Speaker 1: the budget for marketing for certain brands and just going
- 34:18Speaker 1: going for them, having a pitch email ready, so something
- 34:22Speaker 1: that's really short, sus sainct, powerful, specific. It gives them
- 34:28Speaker 1: who you are, what your whole deal is mission, you know,
- 34:33Speaker 1: anything that aligns with theirs is really great. And then
- 34:37Speaker 1: you know, complimenting their show brand, whatever it is, like
- 34:40Speaker 1: I use your toothpaste every single day, Like my teeth
- 34:43Speaker 1: have never been wider. And I started this, We started
- 34:46Speaker 1: this podcast, and we have a community of this demo
- 34:49Speaker 1: and we'd love to share them with our audience. Blah
- 34:52Speaker 1: blah blah. Pe'd like to like continue the conversation. Do
- 34:56Speaker 1: let us know you know, whatever it is, but you'll
- 34:59Speaker 1: never know. Oh and we got it at the right time. Yeah, literally,
- 35:03Speaker 1: the timing of it all was quite divine. So you know,
- 35:07Speaker 1: now if we started it would be a little more
- 35:09Speaker 1: difficult totally, but not impossible. Yeah, you know, anyone can
- 35:14Speaker 1: be successful in podcasting. Now there's so much money in podcasting,
- 35:18Speaker 1: so much opportunity.
- 35:20Speaker 2: It's very, very very exciting on the early tip when
- 35:25Speaker 2: you think about like the first people that you sat
- 35:27Speaker 2: down with, who do you reflect on as like your
- 35:30Speaker 2: first get that was like, holy shit, we're doing this.
- 35:34Speaker 1: Oh man, that's a really good question. I should like
- 35:38Speaker 1: do research before these I'm like, how many? Because we've
- 35:42Speaker 1: done like three hundred episodes. I think it was less
- 35:45Speaker 1: about the person because we've had some pretty incredible people
- 35:48Speaker 1: on that. I'm like, whoa, this person's in my kitchen.
- 35:53Speaker 1: But it's really about these conversations. I'm like, WHOA, I
- 35:58Speaker 1: would never be having these conversations and if it wasn't
- 36:00Speaker 1: for this pod, you know, so whether it's about you know,
- 36:04Speaker 1: really intimate conversations about like sex and relationships and masculine
- 36:09Speaker 1: feminine energies and in relationship and what that means to
- 36:12Speaker 1: Kristin and I and our experience, and or talking to
- 36:18Speaker 1: you know, our friend Alok, who is a gender non
- 36:24Speaker 1: binary performing artist and they are changing the world and
- 36:32Speaker 1: it's you know, not many people know about them, and
- 36:40Speaker 1: it's in those moments I just feel so lucky that
- 36:42Speaker 1: we get that we're able to have people on give
- 36:47Speaker 1: them a platform to speak about, you know, issues like
- 36:54Speaker 1: you know, whether it's transgender, gender, non binary, and making
- 36:59Speaker 1: sure that they are treated as human beings on this planet. Yeah,
- 37:04Speaker 1: you know what I mean, and with the same rights,
- 37:08Speaker 1: same respect, same love. I mean, it's just it's those
- 37:12Speaker 1: conversations that remind me like why we do this, you know? Yeah?
- 37:17Speaker 2: So, I mean from early on, you definitely felt so
- 37:22Speaker 2: purpose driven. You have to feel that way when you're
- 37:24Speaker 2: building something, impouring so much of yourself and your money
- 37:27Speaker 2: and you're just like excited to break even, but again
- 37:33Speaker 2: gaining so much from your guests as well. When you
- 37:37Speaker 2: bring this into the world and you start meeting your
- 37:40Speaker 2: community in person and people know things intimate details about
- 37:45Speaker 2: your life, is there anything like from the get go
- 37:50Speaker 2: that you reflect on and you're like, wow, that was
- 37:53Speaker 2: such a moment for us.
- 37:57Speaker 1: Yeah. I think especially with Kristin and I share our
- 38:03Speaker 1: solo episodes, you know, and we've shared very honestly from
- 38:07Speaker 1: the get go, and it has not been received well
- 38:11Speaker 1: by everyone in our lives, you know, especially family, close
- 38:15Speaker 1: friends who are like I just heard this on the
- 38:17Speaker 1: podcast and I didn't know that, so you know, and hey, listen,
- 38:22Speaker 1: you know, I love and respect every one of those sentiments,
- 38:28Speaker 1: and this is my choice, you know what I mean,
- 38:32Speaker 1: just as long as I'm not hurting anyone when I'm
- 38:34Speaker 1: saying these things. I think it's more of like people
- 38:37Speaker 1: are just getting used to the fact that, like we're
- 38:39Speaker 1: pretty public, you know, so it might make them feel
- 38:44Speaker 1: a certain way, like oh you've changed, or like how
- 38:47Speaker 1: could you not tell me first? Or which is you know,
- 38:51Speaker 1: things I've felt before too about other people. So I
- 38:54Speaker 1: totally get it. But I am I think I've become
- 38:58Speaker 1: a little bit more aware of what I share on
- 39:01Speaker 1: the podcast. Doesn't mean I hold back too much, but
- 39:03Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just aware of what I want to
- 39:05Speaker 1: keep private, you know. But in terms of our solo
- 39:08Speaker 1: episodes that I mentioned, like, you know, my Sacredness of
- 39:12Speaker 1: being single episode, I was quite a while ago, but
- 39:16Speaker 1: I thought that was a really pivotal episode for me
- 39:20Speaker 1: to share because I mean I had been single for
- 39:24Speaker 1: six seven years and just felt like I had reached
- 39:28Speaker 1: the point in me in my evolution during that time
- 39:33Speaker 1: where I was like, oh my god, I get it,
- 39:36Speaker 1: like I get it this time, Like it's so important.
- 39:39Speaker 1: This is so special, Like when else will I be
- 39:42Speaker 1: single like this and able to really give myself love
- 39:45Speaker 1: and time and freedom to explore who I am and
- 39:51Speaker 1: like how much I love myself and all this stuff,
- 39:53Speaker 1: you know. And so I wanted to share that so
- 39:56Speaker 1: badly because I would always get messages from girls who
- 40:00Speaker 1: were also single, because I was like the token thinkle girl,
- 40:03Speaker 1: which is so sweet and I love that, and I
- 40:06Speaker 1: was like, you know, they would always say like, oh,
- 40:09Speaker 1: like how long is it gonna take? Like where is he?
- 40:12Speaker 1: And I'm like or she you know, I'm like I realized.
- 40:15Speaker 1: I was like, we're all experiencing this from the wrong perspective,
- 40:20Speaker 1: like we really just shift it into this is a
- 40:24Speaker 1: sacred time. And yeah, I thought that was really really
- 40:29Speaker 1: impactful for me to share.
- 40:31Speaker 2: When you are building this, like how are you emotionally,
- 40:37Speaker 2: Like how are you feeling about the direction that your
- 40:41Speaker 2: life is going?
- 40:42Speaker 1: Are you feeling lonely? Yeah? I don't feel lonely. I'm
- 40:50Speaker 1: kind of a loner by nature. I like to have
- 40:52Speaker 1: my alone time. I recharged by myself, so generally I
- 40:57Speaker 1: don't feel loneliness, but I do, you know, as we
- 41:04Speaker 1: are building this and as it's getting bigger, and we're
- 41:06Speaker 1: having these important conversations and starting these incredible new projects.
- 41:12Speaker 1: I'm on the daily being confronted with parts of me
- 41:15Speaker 1: that I'm super insecure about, so mainly as it relates
- 41:20Speaker 1: to business, and I'm really trying to face it head
- 41:22Speaker 1: on and just jump in, not afraid to make mistakes
- 41:26Speaker 1: because I have this like worthiness thing when I make mistakes,
- 41:29Speaker 1: that I'm not worthy to be a part of this,
- 41:31Speaker 1: and that Christa is much better at this than I.
- 41:33Speaker 1: So why I am you know, like all these stories
- 41:36Speaker 1: and it's been vital for she and I to share
- 41:40Speaker 1: these inner monologues because she has some of them too,
- 41:43Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So as founders, as friends,
- 41:46Speaker 1: as business partners, like we need to be in constant
- 41:49Speaker 1: communication about this stuff, you know what I mean. So, yeah,
- 41:55Speaker 1: it's it's building a baby like this will confront you,
- 41:59Speaker 1: like if you have some shit to work through, it's
- 42:00Speaker 1: going to come up. One hundred percent, it's going to
- 42:03Speaker 1: come up. And you know, I think we both began
- 42:06Speaker 1: our beginning to think about life in the future, you
- 42:09Speaker 1: know what I mean, Like we want this to live forever.
- 42:13Speaker 1: I think our partner will probably evolve whatever that looks
- 42:17Speaker 1: like but you know, of course, like Chris is engaged,
- 42:20Speaker 1: she's going to get married, and I am in a
- 42:24Speaker 1: new relationship, and it's just like thinking about that part
- 42:31Speaker 1: of your life, that personal part, yeah, and giving love
- 42:34Speaker 1: to that too, because that you know, that's very important.
- 42:37Speaker 1: We don't want to neglect it.
- 42:39Speaker 2: So what we haven't covered yet is your decision to
- 42:42Speaker 2: stop teaching at Soul Cycle. Yeah, so let's talk about that.
- 42:46Speaker 1: Yeah. So that was about a year ago, December twenty eighteen,
- 42:51Speaker 1: and you know, it just it was the right time.
- 42:54Speaker 1: I like felt very I was run ragged in terms
- 42:59Speaker 1: of teaching and doing the podcast. The podcast was growing,
- 43:02Speaker 1: I was touring. So I went part time with Whole
- 43:05Speaker 1: Cycle at first and was teaching like four to six
- 43:07Speaker 1: classes a week. I was touring and I was taking
- 43:10Speaker 1: off a lot. I was like, ah, this isn't fair
- 43:12Speaker 1: to the people, you know. So Christa was actually the
- 43:16Speaker 1: first one that took the leap in June, and you know,
- 43:21Speaker 1: I was so proud of her, like it just took
- 43:23Speaker 1: a lot to do that and we had the means,
- 43:26Speaker 1: you know, to do that. And then I went in
- 43:28Speaker 1: December and it was really hard. I missed the community.
- 43:32Speaker 1: I loved people who rode with me on a regular basis.
- 43:38Speaker 1: I loved the creativity and creating an experience for people.
- 43:42Speaker 1: I loved leading people in something like that, and it
- 43:45Speaker 1: was a release for me too. But I think my
- 43:47Speaker 1: body's super happy, way more relaxed. Like I do yoga,
- 43:51Speaker 1: I walk, I'll do like strength training and maybe one
- 43:55Speaker 1: high intensity a week, you know. So my body is
- 43:57Speaker 1: so much happier.
- 43:59Speaker 2: I even imagine, like your hips after fifteen sixteen classes
- 44:03Speaker 2: a week.
- 44:03Speaker 1: It's funny. I didn't have hip problems. It's weird, but
- 44:06Speaker 1: a lot of people do. A lot of people have
- 44:07Speaker 1: hip and knee problems. I did not. Maybe I will
- 44:10Speaker 1: eventually not God would. But for me, it was just
- 44:16Speaker 1: the adrenals they were shot. My body was stressed, like
- 44:20Speaker 1: I needed to stop.
- 44:21Speaker 2: When I was teaching. The biggest problem that I found
- 44:24Speaker 2: was that my voice. Yeah, I couldn't have a podcast
- 44:28Speaker 2: and teach even for five classes a week.
- 44:31Speaker 1: Yeah, my voice was a huge Yeah. I mean I'm
- 44:36Speaker 1: recording a solo episode on it right now. It's like
- 44:40Speaker 1: it's a It's one of the relationships me and my
- 44:43Speaker 1: voice that has taught me a lot. It's just such
- 44:46Speaker 1: a mirror for everything that's going on in my life
- 44:49Speaker 1: outside of me and internally. So yeah, I mean when
- 44:54Speaker 1: we started the podcast, I was teaching a ton, but
- 44:58Speaker 1: I was also like drinking on the weekends and partying
- 45:02Speaker 1: and then also working out the same, like working out
- 45:04Speaker 1: in the mornings and just running myself ragged and I
- 45:09Speaker 1: would lose my voice completely and we'd have to cancel recordings.
- 45:13Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I've been there.
- 45:15Speaker 2: The day before I interviewed Ruth Zuckerman, I had taught
- 45:22Speaker 2: what was I don't think it was my final class,
- 45:24Speaker 2: but it was toward the end.
- 45:25Speaker 1: I was teaching at a spin studio in New York.
- 45:27Speaker 2: Yeah, and I was okay when I left the class
- 45:32Speaker 2: at like nine am, and by eleven am the day before,
- 45:36Speaker 2: like I had no sound whatsoever. And I was so
- 45:39Speaker 2: amped to sit down with her, and I was so
- 45:41Speaker 2: mad at myself that I'd put myself in that position,
- 45:44Speaker 2: and I googled and instagram storied and was just like
- 45:48Speaker 2: looking for all the answers and I went mute from
- 45:51Speaker 2: like eleven fifteen am when I learned that I should
- 45:53Speaker 2: stop trying to make sounds until literally, like I think
- 45:56Speaker 2: we sat down at nine thirty the next day until
- 45:58Speaker 2: like nine twenty six, and I just prayed that everything
- 46:01Speaker 2: was going to be okay, and it was fine, and
- 46:03Speaker 2: we did it, and then I was like never again,
- 46:06Speaker 2: Like I can't risk this when you have like these
- 46:09Speaker 2: big goals and aspirations and you want to bring these
- 46:12Speaker 2: conversations to life, like I know, you feel so passionately
- 46:15Speaker 2: about like just this opportunity to bring these people and
- 46:19Speaker 2: the issues that they speak about and what they have
- 46:21Speaker 2: to say to the world, like into the world.
- 46:24Speaker 1: Exactly exactly, And yeah, it was scary. It is scary.
- 46:29Speaker 1: Where the heck did you go? You just went ariel
- 46:32Speaker 1: on us and like there was nothing you can do about.
- 46:35Speaker 2: Okay, so you leave Soul Cycle and then how does
- 46:38Speaker 2: your heart feel?
- 46:39Speaker 1: So after leaving Soul Cycle, I don't know. Like I
- 46:44Speaker 1: was so happy and so proud that we were able
- 46:47Speaker 1: to do that, and also like I was just getting
- 46:53Speaker 1: to know myself in a new flow. I was like
- 46:58Speaker 1: a Soul Cycle instructor for four and a half years.
- 47:00Speaker 1: That was my every day and it was in your
- 47:02Speaker 1: Instagram bio. So that made you who you are? Yeah now, yeah,
- 47:06Speaker 1: but yeah, it was it was interesting, but overall, so
- 47:09Speaker 1: so happy, so much more time and energy to pour
- 47:11Speaker 1: into the podcast, to pour into anything else that I
- 47:14Speaker 1: wanted to do. And I learned so much and I
- 47:17Speaker 1: met so many incredible, incredible people after after I quit,
- 47:23Speaker 1: we really we ramped up the tour in the new year.
- 47:26Speaker 1: So twenty nineteen we toured all year and I and
- 47:31Speaker 1: had some really incredible experiences like ayahuasca, going to on site,
- 47:39Speaker 1: just lots. I started therapy, so it was like a
- 47:42Speaker 1: really big year. We share that big year. I started
- 47:44Speaker 1: therapy last year too, so amazing, Yeah, scarying, It's good. Yeah,
- 47:49Speaker 1: it's so good, so good, so delayed.
- 47:53Speaker 2: I will say that the episode the solo I did
- 47:56Speaker 2: on saying like I finally went to therapy was like
- 47:59Speaker 2: the biggest conversation starter for like everyone, like everyone wanted
- 48:04Speaker 2: to talk about going to therapy. Yeah, because I think
- 48:07Speaker 2: for so many it feels like something that I don't
- 48:09Speaker 2: know how to say this the right way, Like it's
- 48:11Speaker 2: not for me, Like I don't I don't need to
- 48:14Speaker 2: go to therapy. Whine with my best friend is just
- 48:17Speaker 2: like therapy. But it not. Oh man, I've heard that
- 48:22Speaker 2: so many times. Yeah, it's it's not, and it's I.
- 48:25Speaker 1: Wouldn't say like everyone needs to go to therapy, Like
- 48:28Speaker 1: do you whatever you feel? But it changed my life. Yeah,
- 48:32Speaker 1: I feel that.
- 48:33Speaker 2: And I mean revert for a moment back to before
- 48:36Speaker 2: you felt like really empowered by the single phase. Did
- 48:39Speaker 2: you have a phase or a period inside the single
- 48:42Speaker 2: phase that was like self destructive is a strong, strong term,
- 48:46Speaker 2: but like where you just kind of fucking lost it.
- 48:49Speaker 1: Oh yeah I didn't. It's like I just didn't respect myself,
- 48:53Speaker 1: you know. And I and if you asked me at
- 48:55Speaker 1: that at that time, do you respect yourself? I'd be like, yeah,
- 49:00Speaker 1: but like the way I was acting was not respecting myself,
- 49:02Speaker 1: which is like going after guys who were emotionally unavailable,
- 49:07Speaker 1: just having sex with a lot of people, like you
- 49:10Speaker 1: know what I mean, just find like filling myself up
- 49:12Speaker 1: in ways that like now I'd be like, oh, okay,
- 49:16Speaker 1: that's not how you fill yourself up, girl. But I
- 49:19Speaker 1: was also living in New York at the time. I
- 49:21Speaker 1: was at a coming out of a long term relationship
- 49:26Speaker 1: that I blew up that I mentioned, And yeah, I
- 49:31Speaker 1: just I didn't like myself, so therefore I didn't think
- 49:35Speaker 1: that anyone could. Really I was going subconsciously going after
- 49:39Speaker 1: people who didn't really respect me anyway. Yeah, I hear you.
- 49:43Speaker 1: I do it all the time.
- 49:44Speaker 2: Yeah, what does life look like for you these days?
- 49:47Speaker 2: And I know obviously like, no two days are the
- 49:49Speaker 2: same thing.
- 49:50Speaker 1: But yeah, that's true, No two days are the same.
- 49:54Speaker 1: But life, life is so good. We're trying to create
- 50:00Speaker 1: more space this year, so tour will be at the
- 50:04Speaker 1: second half of the year. But we're you know, our
- 50:07Speaker 1: days are spent either recording, we're working with the team.
- 50:11Speaker 1: We're working on launching your podcast pro for people who
- 50:13Speaker 1: want to launch Girl Monetize, a podcast that's going to
- 50:17Speaker 1: be huge. We feel so passionately about helping people do that.
- 50:21Speaker 1: I mean, we're we're writing a book, we are working
- 50:26Speaker 1: on like merch and we're working you know, all this stuff.
- 50:28Speaker 1: It's just it's really exciting. There's many things going on.
- 50:34Speaker 1: And some days I'm like, Lindsa, you are not gonnat multitasker.
- 50:38Speaker 1: And some days I'm like, you're fucking amazing at multitasking.
- 50:41Speaker 1: So I feel like different people. Some days we have
- 50:43Speaker 1: you know, photo shoots for this and that, and that
- 50:46Speaker 1: sounds like, oh that sounds fun and it and it is,
- 50:49Speaker 1: but it's also worked too, you know what I mean,
- 50:52Speaker 1: like it's an interesting thing when people see things from
- 50:55Speaker 1: the outside. Yeah, they're like, oh my god, they do
- 50:57Speaker 1: photo shoots all day. Cool, and it is cool and
- 51:02Speaker 1: we work with incredible creatives to create those and it's work.
- 51:06Speaker 2: And it's stressful, and no one talks about like your
- 51:09Speaker 2: self image and how you feel when you need to
- 51:11Speaker 2: stand in a camera for the eight thousand time this year.
- 51:15Speaker 1: Yeah, so it's really good. Like it's good in the sense,
- 51:17Speaker 1: like it really again, is that mirror that makes you
- 51:21Speaker 1: look like all right, that self worth thing is coming up,
- 51:25Speaker 1: that body image thing is coming up, Like where can
- 51:27Speaker 1: I like really fine tune that relationship with my body?
- 51:30Speaker 1: Like you know, yeah, it's so much deeper than that.
- 51:32Speaker 1: But you know what I mean, Yeah, totally.
- 51:34Speaker 2: And I don't mean to say that as in a
- 51:37Speaker 2: way that comes off like ungrateful for opportunities that.
- 51:40Speaker 1: Come up clost because that is so not how it
- 51:43Speaker 1: feels when they come my way.
- 51:45Speaker 2: But that doesn't mean that despite having like a journey
- 51:48Speaker 2: that's gotten you to somewhere that you're so proud of
- 51:50Speaker 2: that you aren't going to feel so many moments of
- 51:52Speaker 2: weakness and just like what that like pulse check all
- 51:57Speaker 2: the time.
- 51:58Speaker 1: Okay, so you're doing all the things. Now what excites
- 52:02Speaker 1: you right now? I'm so excited to like step into
- 52:11Speaker 1: like confident me in this business this year. Like I'm
- 52:14Speaker 1: really down and I'm really ready and I'm really down
- 52:16Speaker 1: to step into that. Lindsay that communicates everything that's on
- 52:20Speaker 1: her mind. It does so with grace and love. You know.
- 52:24Speaker 1: I tend to not communicate all that I'm feeling and
- 52:28Speaker 1: thinking because i think I'm going to hurt people or whatever.
- 52:32Speaker 1: So I'm really excited to step into that. I'm in
- 52:36Speaker 1: a new relationship and it's amazing and I'm so excited
- 52:39Speaker 1: about that, like best feeling. He's he's my person. It's
- 52:43Speaker 1: the best, Like I'm just I Yeah, it's so good.
- 52:50Speaker 1: And so he's my equal and he just makes me
- 52:54Speaker 1: feel like I can do anything. You know. It's like
- 52:57Speaker 1: it's just the best feeling. So I'm really really excited
- 53:00Speaker 1: about that. And I'm excited to make music this year.
- 53:02Speaker 1: So I'm making music and it's something that I've always
- 53:05Speaker 1: wanted to do. And again, it's like it's going to
- 53:09Speaker 1: reach who it's going to reach, and I'm going to
- 53:10Speaker 1: be so happy.
- 53:11Speaker 2: You learned a really important lesson that you shared back
- 53:15Speaker 2: in high school about handling people with grace and understanding
- 53:19Speaker 2: that when someone comes at you in some kind of
- 53:20Speaker 2: way that usually it means that they're dealing with something.
- 53:24Speaker 2: When it comes to the last two plus years now
- 53:27Speaker 2: of building almost thirty three years, what would you say has.
- 53:31Speaker 1: Been one of the most valuable lessons that you've learned.
- 53:35Speaker 1: I think, just like that I'm worth it. So whether
- 53:37Speaker 1: that means like, should I say that yeah, because I'm
- 53:40Speaker 1: worth it, or should I pursue that because I love it? Yeah,
- 53:44Speaker 1: like I am, I'm totally worth it, you know, not
- 53:47Speaker 1: worrying about what other people think or what they expect
- 53:49Speaker 1: of me. It's really tuning in to who I am,
- 53:56Speaker 1: honoring what I need, what I want to create. So yeah,
- 54:00Speaker 1: it's that worthiness thing that I've I've really learned, and
- 54:05Speaker 1: that has magnetized a lot of amazing things to me,
- 54:08Speaker 1: including that relationship, because I don't think if I didn't
- 54:12Speaker 1: feel like I was worthy, if I didn't love myself like,
- 54:15Speaker 1: I would not have attracted that.
- 54:16Speaker 2: Yeah, totally at all. Yeah, And I mean when it
- 54:19Speaker 2: comes to so much of you giving yourself to someone else.
- 54:24Speaker 2: But then in addition, like the bigger population in your community.
- 54:28Speaker 1: What has been something.
- 54:30Speaker 2: That you've learned now that you have this great opportunity,
- 54:34Speaker 2: now that you are constantly interacting with so many people,
- 54:37Speaker 2: so many people are following you and trying to keep
- 54:39Speaker 2: up with you, Like, what have you learned about how
- 54:42Speaker 2: to either manage that or interact with that.
- 54:45Speaker 1: Or Yeah, especially as a release to social media, like
- 54:48Speaker 1: be myself one hundred percent all the time, you myself
- 54:51Speaker 1: because like it's because then it's not work, you know
- 54:54Speaker 1: what I mean? Because social media can quickly become work
- 54:57Speaker 1: and annoying. And I have some days where I'm like
- 55:00Speaker 1: this and it's not saying fuck this to the people.
- 55:03Speaker 1: It's like just this this like platform, like like let me.
- 55:07Speaker 1: I just don't want to feel like a like I'm
- 55:10Speaker 1: so attached to it and I'm not. I just want
- 55:13Speaker 1: to feel free on it. I just want to create
- 55:16Speaker 1: and post whatever I want and express myself, you know
- 55:20Speaker 1: what I mean. And then I feel like the people
- 55:23Speaker 1: who want to follow me and interact with me will
- 55:25Speaker 1: and those that don't want and that's cool, Yeah, you
- 55:28Speaker 1: know what I mean. So, yeah, I think just the
- 55:30Speaker 1: being yourself thing, which I'm so lucky with the podcast
- 55:32Speaker 1: christ and I get to be ourselves like it's the best,
- 55:35Speaker 1: you know. But I especially for people out there who
- 55:38Speaker 1: are like trying to build their business online with social media,
- 55:41Speaker 1: like be yourself, tell your story, be legit, but also
- 55:45Speaker 1: just be yourself because like no one's your you know
- 55:48Speaker 1: what I mean. So like I trust that, like my experience,
- 55:51Speaker 1: my weirdness is just going to attract the people. You know,
- 55:55Speaker 1: they're supposed to follow me.
- 55:56Speaker 2: The people all right, Well, all those people that are
- 55:58Speaker 2: following you, they look at your social media and they
- 56:00Speaker 2: see now a co founder, a passionate woman that is
- 56:04Speaker 2: confident and knows who she is. When you look in
- 56:07Speaker 2: the mirror, is that what you see looking back at
- 56:08Speaker 2: you or what do you say?
- 56:10Speaker 1: Yeah? Yeah, I do, I really really do even this
- 56:14Speaker 1: look that I'm rocking now, I'm like you passionate confident woman. No,
- 56:19Speaker 1: but I do. I think air Force ones say passionate
- 56:21Speaker 1: and confident, Like I just I don't know. I'm like
- 56:23Speaker 1: I'm at that, I'm thirty two. I'm like, I don't know,
- 56:28Speaker 1: it feels very good. I don't I care a lot less.
- 56:32Speaker 1: I just I honor my body, like you know, I'm
- 56:38Speaker 1: I think the anxiety is I have to work on
- 56:41Speaker 1: the judgment around my process in learning things. But other
- 56:47Speaker 1: than that, like when I look at myself and was like, yeah, girl,
- 56:49Speaker 1: I'm proud of you, like you're amazing and you're doing it.
- 56:53Speaker 1: Different answer a year ago. Yeah, maybe maybe slightly different.
- 56:57Speaker 1: I think therapy definitely helped. Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 57:01Speaker 2: Last question, Yeah, you have an opportunity right now to
- 57:05Speaker 2: offer the Lindsay a piece of advice who is in
- 57:11Speaker 2: New York and working three different bartending jobs and doing
- 57:14Speaker 2: fit modeling and then at soul cycle and like feels
- 57:18Speaker 2: like she is just at her breaking point. Yeah, you
- 57:20Speaker 2: have an opportunity to offer Lindsay during that hurdle moment
- 57:23Speaker 2: one piece of advice.
- 57:25Speaker 1: What is it that you tell her? Looking back on
- 57:27Speaker 1: it now, I'd be like, look at me. Don't look
- 57:29Speaker 1: at any of the hot finance guys around you, because
- 57:32Speaker 1: they're douche pigs right now and they're point in life.
- 57:35Speaker 1: Look at me and just know that all of this
- 57:40Speaker 1: is so purposeful, Like you're gonna you're gonna have a
- 57:43Speaker 1: field day connecting the dots to everything you're experiencing now
- 57:47Speaker 1: to who you're becoming from the people that you're meeting
- 57:51Speaker 1: from learning how to type in a cash tip into
- 57:54Speaker 1: the cash register machine, bingie, like everything is so perfect
- 58:00Speaker 1: and like just trust this time, like you will never
- 58:04Speaker 1: this is fleeting. It is so fleeting, and you're doing
- 58:07Speaker 1: great and you never ever have to change who you
- 58:11Speaker 1: are in order for someone to love you, for someone
- 58:14Speaker 1: to cast you, period, period. Thanks, You're welcome.
