- 0:02SPEAKER_02: Well, hey.
- 0:03SPEAKER_02: Welcome back.
- 0:05SPEAKER_02: It's the North Florida Sports Network.
- 0:07SPEAKER_02: We haven't had our official reaction to what was an epic FSU Miami game.
- 0:12SPEAKER_02: So I have Miami contributor Justin on the show.
- 0:16SPEAKER_02: We're going to talk about last Saturday night's game, and then we're going to give you our top five FSU Miami games of all time.
- 0:25SPEAKER_02: I mean, you talk about a list there that there's going to be plenty that are left off.
- 0:30SPEAKER_02: It's going to be awesome.
- 0:32SPEAKER_02: It's going to be epic.
- 0:33SPEAKER_02: We'll talk about the rivalry and what it means to us and and where it ranks in the national perspective.
- 0:40SPEAKER_02: So stick around.
- 0:41SPEAKER_02: It's going to be a great show and uh let's get it started.
- 1:15SPEAKER_02: Hey man, we got Justin back on the line.
- 1:18SPEAKER_02: Oh man, I I was sick to my stomach for literally days.
- 1:26SPEAKER_01: We need to do we had to wait till Wednesday to even talk about it.
- 1:29SPEAKER_02: Oh aggravating.
- 1:32SPEAKER_02: And yeah, you know why for me, it's damn zebras.
- 1:36SPEAKER_02: Damn it, they ruined it.
- 1:39SPEAKER_02: They put their damn little, instead of a cherry on top, they put a turd on a beautiful cake, which was a double overtime thriller Miami 43 FSU 35.
- 1:51SPEAKER_02: Goodness gracious, man.
- 1:53SPEAKER_02: What's the first thing you think about?
- 1:54SPEAKER_02: Obviously, Miami's number one now for the first time in 24 years, so this does have impact, but just watching that game and afterwards.
- 2:05SPEAKER_01: Honestly, my first thought looking back at that game was that holding penalty was bullshit.
- 2:12SPEAKER_02: God.
- 2:13SPEAKER_02: See, I know.
- 2:15SPEAKER_02: I agree.
- 2:16SPEAKER_02: And I and I would have been told.
- 2:18SPEAKER_01: As I'm watching, as I'm watching the game, and they they complete that Hail Mary, and I'm obviously enraged throwing stuff around my living room.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:27SPEAKER_01: And then and I'm like, oh, there's a flag.
- 2:29SPEAKER_01: I'm like, God damn it, we rough Ass and Daniels.
- 2:31SPEAKER_02: Now they're only good enough to go like because you wanted to call a foul on that play, that was the only one that maybe you could have called.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: And with as late as the flag came out, I thought for sure that's what the call was.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: So it would have been.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, oh my God, they're gonna be going for two from the half yard line now.
- 2:48SPEAKER_01: I'm like, so we're definitely going into triple overtime, which terrified me because Ashton Daniels from the two and a half yard line can do all kinds of weird crap.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: That's true.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: One drop pass, a fumbled snap on Miami, and Ashton Daniels scramble, and we lose by two.
- 3:04SPEAKER_01: So I was terrified of going into that triple overtime.
- 3:06SPEAKER_02: Understood.
- 3:07SPEAKER_02: And I I I respect that that take.
- 3:10SPEAKER_02: I I don't I think it's real knowing you.
- 3:13SPEAKER_02: I I I feel the same way if there were if the team, if everything were different.
- 3:18SPEAKER_02: And you you'd be terri I would feel the same way, but you know, it's just like, damn, that sucks.
- 3:24SPEAKER_02: Like this has been way too important of a game, way too big of a game, way too much memorable plays now that you just crapped on.
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because that's the first thing you're gonna remember.
- 3:37SPEAKER_01: You're not gonna remember the the Deuce Robinson touchdown with two and a half minutes left.
- 3:41SPEAKER_02: They need to be able to have review on on penalties.
- 3:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, because I and what's even more frustrating about it is that uh the refs were letting the kids play until the final play.
- 3:55SPEAKER_02: There needs to be review on penalties like that, or in the last two minutes or something.
- 4:00SPEAKER_02: It's too important, there's too much speculation now, and if somebody screws up, then you need that that that you would love to have that safe.
- 4:08SPEAKER_02: The only excuse to not have it is is so they can do the shit now.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: But oh yeah, and you'd have to you'd have to implement it something like you said, in like the last two minutes of either.
- 4:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it could be that's fine, but uh there's no way a game should finish that way after what was incredible to see the plays that were made, and then he does it again on the next play, which was ruled an interception, but still it was called a touchdown by the announcer and the refs, which are the worst uh officiating group by any sp any college group, which is atrocious that they even have each conference as officials, but the ACC is by far the worst.
- 4:56SPEAKER_01: You know what the final the final call on the Deuce Robinson won, which I honestly I don't think you could really tell anything that happened with all the replays I've watched.
- 5:07SPEAKER_02: Whatever call on the field would have stood in the case.
- 5:09SPEAKER_01: That was what it was gonna be.
- 5:11SPEAKER_01: But it did remind me of a couple of years ago the Miami Virginia Tech Hail Mary.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 5:16SPEAKER_01: That Virginia Tech almost got.
- 5:18SPEAKER_01: That was another controversial, very controversial one that honestly with all the replays, you still couldn't tell either.
- 5:25SPEAKER_02: I also got flashbacks of the um the uh substitute refs.
- 5:30SPEAKER_02: Remember that game?
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Okay, it was a Russell Wilson Hail Mary or whatever.
- 5:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's just the just the just being like, oh god, just being refs, being like, we don't know what we're doing.
- 5:40SPEAKER_02: And that's probably what it is.
- 5:41SPEAKER_02: I don't think there's some big conspiracy.
- 5:43SPEAKER_02: I think they just suck.
- 5:45SPEAKER_02: And maybe they know, like I mean, yeah, you know Miami's their only chance, but you can't, you have to be able to look and be like, all right, we're gonna pick that flag up.
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: That's not a hold.
- 5:56SPEAKER_02: I'm not as mad about the fourth down because how egregious the the previous play was.
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: It's more just laughable.
- 6:03SPEAKER_02: It's like, wow, they actually, you know, great.
- 6:08SPEAKER_01: I actually I heard a great take on Lebutard, surprisingly enough, because they haven't had a great take on anything in about a decade.
- 6:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: But but but Mike Ryan on on Levitard brought up a great point when talking about the He's a huge Deuce Robinson.
- 6:24SPEAKER_01: Oh, dude, he's a he's a booster.
- 6:26SPEAKER_01: He's all involved in the program now.
- 6:27SPEAKER_02: I know, I know.
- 6:28SPEAKER_01: But he brought up a great a great point that I kind of agree with, where they should have just said fuck it and called it a touchdown and let them and let them go for two because the game deserved it.
- 6:41SPEAKER_02: It really did.
- 6:42SPEAKER_02: I mean, damn it, they did it again after you fucking blew an obvious no not a hold.
- 6:49SPEAKER_02: The fact that you you were saying, oh, I thought it was a roughing the passer.
- 6:53SPEAKER_02: That it that's actually, yeah, it that game deserves.
- 6:57SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 6:58SPEAKER_02: I mean, it could have been even better.
- 7:01SPEAKER_02: It could have been even better.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: It did.
- 7:03SPEAKER_02: And then you like you said, he gets that, it goes a triple over time.
- 7:07SPEAKER_02: A whole nother it could have all bets are off.
- 7:10SPEAKER_02: It could have gone down as the one of the best, if not the best, game in the history of what is, I think, the best rivalry in college football in the last 50 years.
- 7:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, I mean, dude, we said it probably the the first time we ever talked to Miami, Florida State on this podcast.
- 7:26SPEAKER_01: We were saying that this is the best rivalry in college football.
- 7:30SPEAKER_01: I stand by it.
- 7:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah, there's there's nobody that can convince me otherwise.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: There's there's nothing.
- 7:35SPEAKER_01: Miami, Florida State is the pinnacle of college football rivalry.
- 7:39SPEAKER_02: All right, so how do you feel?
- 7:43SPEAKER_02: I I I kind of feel, yes, there's some things Miami needs to work on.
- 7:48SPEAKER_02: They're obviously a different team, but I'm I'm still I'm number one.
- 7:55SPEAKER_02: You know, like we can that's the game now.
- 7:58SPEAKER_02: This isn't the old school, like you just have to win.
- 8:00SPEAKER_02: It's c it's more like the modern NFL where you can lose to anybody on any given uh Sunday.
- 8:05SPEAKER_02: And I more I take I take out what I took from was how they responded to adversity, which was perfect.
- 8:14SPEAKER_02: I mean, every time they got pushed, they made a play and they they responded.
- 8:20SPEAKER_02: So I thought I I yes, you want to work on it, but that was a you're still undefeated.
- 8:28SPEAKER_02: Maybe in the playoff, I don't feel as confident as I would have.
- 8:31SPEAKER_02: How do you feel?
- 8:33SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I'm not so much concerned uh uh specifically with any like one playoff matchup that we could potentially have um because what just happened this Saturday shows that there is no great team in college football.
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you're right.
- 8:51SPEAKER_02: I mean, everybody lost.
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: So the you just got to get there first.
- 8:55SPEAKER_02: And then when but what I'm saying is you have the guy that you want in Malachi Tony.
- 9:01SPEAKER_02: This guy is flawless.
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: I mean, this he's unbelievable.
- 9:05SPEAKER_01: He really is on freaking believable.
- 9:07SPEAKER_02: He shouldn't be as good as he is, but it's just hard work and dedication.
- 9:11SPEAKER_02: He doesn't drop anything, he's an excellent route runner, and he was the difference.
- 9:16SPEAKER_02: He can throw the ball.
- 9:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he can throw the ball, he can catch it.
- 9:20SPEAKER_02: Uh, he was can he's just consistent.
- 9:24SPEAKER_01: And uh that is one thing that that uh that's what I was gonna say is my biggest concern, not necessarily a matchup against Georgia or or something like that.
- 9:32SPEAKER_01: My biggest concern is that when Malachi Tony's not on the field, the Miami offense sputters at best.
- 9:40SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's why I have him ahead of Mensah now in the highest.
- 9:46SPEAKER_00: Oh, absolutely.
- 9:46SPEAKER_02: Absolutely, dude.
- 9:47SPEAKER_02: I dude I mean his minta's gonna be a very good thing.
- 9:51SPEAKER_02: But if you if you watched it, you could tell that game alone, he was the difference maker.
- 9:57SPEAKER_02: He was the best player on the field.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: And and dude, if you look at like uh the second half of the Wake Forest game earlier this season, uh Tony didn't play much because he had like an abd abdominal strain or something.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: He was kind of banged up.
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and dude, dude, and then in the second half, second half of Wake Forest, Miami couldn't move the ball.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: And then when Tony was out on a couple of drives, Miami went back to back three and outs on Saturday.
- 10:22SPEAKER_02: But they did, I mean, yeah, but once they figured out they can just run down their throat with Mallory, he looked good.
- 10:28SPEAKER_02: Uh with Fletcher's.
- 10:29SPEAKER_02: Mallory Frank Gore.
- 10:31SPEAKER_02: Yeah, he reminded Yeah, that little with it's like, oh wow, Fletcher's hurt good.
- 10:35SPEAKER_00: No, put him back in.
- 10:37SPEAKER_00: Put him back in, not this guy.
- 10:40SPEAKER_02: That that exactly what I was thinking.
- 10:41SPEAKER_02: I was like, oh God.
- 10:43SPEAKER_02: And then after the first overtime, uh FSU scores, Miami on the first down, they try to throw it.
- 10:50SPEAKER_02: Florida State had a chance where they could have ended the game right there.
- 10:55SPEAKER_02: If two players collide and they tip it out of bounds, they don't get the pick.
- 11:00SPEAKER_02: But the next play, just hand it off, touchdown.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Wow, why did we why did we what were we thinking on first down?
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: No, and dude, yeah, that run reminded me so much.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Again, another reason why I I say Mallory is Frank Gore.
- 11:17SPEAKER_01: One, because I mean he's just a monster of a freshman.
- 11:20SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 11:20SPEAKER_01: Um, and and that, and that touchdown run in the overtime reminded me of the game-winning touchdown run Frank Gore had in 04 in overtime.
- 11:28SPEAKER_01: The only other overtime game we had in the rivalry.
- 11:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah, there you go.
- 11:31SPEAKER_02: And that's before we get done with this game, we're gonna see if that one ranks in your top five.
- 11:39SPEAKER_02: Uh I'm not it was a great game.
- 11:43SPEAKER_02: It was good to see FSU put up a fight.
- 11:46SPEAKER_02: They didn't have enough dudes just to be able to slow down the run, and but they almost pulled out.
- 11:53SPEAKER_02: They should have kept should have had another chance.
- 11:56SPEAKER_02: I don't like Mike Norvell in the first half not taking the points.
- 12:00SPEAKER_02: What are you doing?
- 12:03SPEAKER_01: I actually kind of understand it.
- 12:05SPEAKER_02: I understand it too, but it you all you can't just beat a dead horse.
- 12:11SPEAKER_02: And you did it last week, you didn't, it didn't happen.
- 12:13SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: You blew it.
- 12:14SPEAKER_02: You can't and then you did it again, and then you did it again.
- 12:18SPEAKER_02: So you did it three times, and you're 0 for three.
- 12:21SPEAKER_02: So the last one, it's like it's even further.
- 12:25SPEAKER_02: Take the damn points.
- 12:26SPEAKER_02: It's almost knocking you in the head, and it was hard-headed and it was stupid.
- 12:30SPEAKER_02: And he should have done at least.
- 12:32SPEAKER_02: He should have done it at least.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: The second one for sure, I would have taken the points.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 12:37SPEAKER_01: I I also get the logic of it because you're not gonna beat Malachi Tony with.
- 12:43SPEAKER_02: No, you're not, but you need you're not gonna beat him with getting stopped either.
- 12:48SPEAKER_02: And I think you I think it's not one if it was one yard, okay, yeah, maybe do a put tush-push or you can run it.
- 12:54SPEAKER_02: But there's no way you're gonna get that.
- 12:57SPEAKER_02: The percentages of getting those plays there are at that time in the game with this game in the line, it's not good.
- 13:03SPEAKER_02: And I'm taking the points in that situation in the first half when uh oh, it just it was aggravating.
- 13:09SPEAKER_02: And to see it it be such a swing point in the previous game, and then okay, you did it and it's not fourth and one, it's fourth and two.
- 13:19SPEAKER_02: And you did it and you didn't get it, and then you do it on fourth and three.
- 13:22SPEAKER_02: That I I that just really bothered me.
- 13:24SPEAKER_02: I think he he he takes the points there.
- 13:27SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
- 13:27SPEAKER_01: I mean, you can't say, well, you can, but Yeah, because then Miami calls played differently moving forward, blah, blah, blah.
- 13:34SPEAKER_01: I know, I know, but and if the game and it I I guarantee you, if the game came down to a two-point game, we'd have been like it would have been different.
- 13:42SPEAKER_01: He would have punched it in because that touchdown means you tied him now instead of losing.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: You gotta go.
- 13:48SPEAKER_02: It would have been different, but still, I think you let that play out in another way.
- 13:53SPEAKER_02: It's another scenario where I think it it couldn't have been worse.
- 13:59SPEAKER_01: I was definitely glad he didn't take the points as a I'll I'll tell you that because I had confidence that we could stop him on those points now.
- 14:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, exactly.
- 14:08SPEAKER_02: I'm not saying you couldn't have got it, but I I think the points they matter.
- 14:11SPEAKER_02: And people, you can't be winning, yeah, you can.
- 14:15SPEAKER_02: You can win with field goals.
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: If you make them, you can win.
- 14:19SPEAKER_02: Just as the Cardinals and the Rams.
- 14:21SPEAKER_02: I know, uh, yeah.
- 14:22SPEAKER_02: So like, yeah, I don't did not like that.
- 14:26SPEAKER_02: Um anything else to add on this on this game before we get to our list.
- 14:31SPEAKER_01: I'm I'm I'm happy we got out with a win, honestly.
- 14:34SPEAKER_01: The way the way the game played out, man, um I I am very concerned that we don't seem to have much of an offensive identity without Tony.
- 14:44SPEAKER_01: Um I I've expected more from Cooper Barcade this year.
- 14:47SPEAKER_01: He hasn't really produced much.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: Who's gonna be Josh Moore?
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: Number two.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Josh Moore, he was that was supposed to be Josh Moore, but he's out for the year.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: Um, and not having a legit like outside the uh outside the hash marks uh deep threat wide receiver is is it definitely could present itself as an issue once we get to the playoffs or even just in a couple of weeks against Notre Dame.
- 15:10SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 15:11SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 15:12SPEAKER_02: Well, let's do the uh top five all-time FSU Miami games.
- 15:19SPEAKER_02: You want to go first?
- 15:20SPEAKER_02: You go first or the away team here.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: Alright, yeah, I'll go first.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: I'll say I'll put my my number five, and this is probably gonna shock a lot of people.
- 15:30SPEAKER_01: Block at the rock.
- 15:32SPEAKER_01: Fantastic game.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I was uh and that one for me is probably up there for the lone reason that my uh filthy rich best friend bought me front row tickets for that game, and I was sitting row one on the 37-yard line for it.
- 15:49SPEAKER_02: Both teams are ranked.
- 15:51SPEAKER_01: Um it was a big game.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: It was almost like both teams were trying to get back to what we were in the early 90s at the time.
- 16:01SPEAKER_02: And they were cool.
- 16:02SPEAKER_01: So I put block at the right, and it came down to a blocked extra point at the end of the game.
- 16:06SPEAKER_01: I mean, like, you can't get much better than that.
- 16:08SPEAKER_02: It's pretty it's pretty ironic, too, for a a rivalry that has so many endings with miss field goals to get, you know, to have one.
- 16:20SPEAKER_01: And everybody forgets because of the block, everybody forgets the insane back corner touchdown Miami scored to even be in position for that extra point.
- 16:28SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it really was.
- 16:30SPEAKER_02: It was DeMarcus Walker with the big block at the rock.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Number five.
- 16:34SPEAKER_02: Who's your number four?
- 16:36SPEAKER_01: Number four, I couldn't even tell you which year this was, and it was kind of uh in the grand scheme of Miami, Florida State, kind of an irrelevant game.
- 16:46SPEAKER_01: But the uh who can get knocked out more, Brad Kaya versus DeAndre Francois game.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: That game was so much fun, and both quarterbacks just sat there in the pocket and just kept getting drilled in the face.
- 17:03SPEAKER_01: I mean, Brad Kaya got a tooth knocked out.
- 17:05SPEAKER_01: The game came down to the wire.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: Both those quarterbacks played their asses off, and just the hard-hitting.
- 17:11SPEAKER_02: Are you talking about Mark Ricks, the only win against Jimbo?
- 17:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that was that might have been that year, but we're that's 2016, I believe.
- 17:23SPEAKER_02: Or 20 yeah, 2016.
- 17:27SPEAKER_02: Miami got the win on the road.
- 17:29SPEAKER_02: Was it in Tallahassee?
- 17:35SPEAKER_02: Yes.
- 17:36SPEAKER_02: Well, number four is with uh Brad Kaya and DeAndre Francois.
- 17:43SPEAKER_02: A little interesting there to have that in your top five, but this is Justin's top five.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: It was because of the hard-hitting, it reminded me of the n the early 90s games where it was a hard-hitting, intense game, and it was a close game, and you know, it was two mediocre teams, but I really enjoyed that.
- 18:01SPEAKER_01: I still talk about that stupid game, and it's totally irrelevant to the program.
- 18:05SPEAKER_02: There's been some memorable games that uh 2021 was a game that did not make my list, but it was it's still I remember it as a turning point for Jordan Travis and and pretty much Mike Norvell's first little run there.
- 18:21SPEAKER_02: His only little run there.
- 18:25SPEAKER_02: But that it was uh fourth and fourth and third, fourth and twenty, or like third and nineteen or something.
- 18:31SPEAKER_02: He made shirts or something.
- 18:32SPEAKER_02: It was yeah, it was the third and nineteen.
- 18:34SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it was a big play.
- 18:35SPEAKER_02: And um it was a four he had a fourth down two uh conversion.
- 18:40SPEAKER_02: That was a big, but that didn't make my list.
- 18:42SPEAKER_02: But we're doing yours.
- 18:43SPEAKER_02: That's number four, number three.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: Now, this is where it's gonna get pretty predictable.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 18:52SPEAKER_01: Wide right one.
- 18:54SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 18:55SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 18:56SPEAKER_02: Epic game, 1991.
- 18:58SPEAKER_02: You're talking about number one versus number two.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Gino Toretta, Casey Weldon, both teams just oh man, it was so much drama.
- 19:08SPEAKER_02: I was it at this game.
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Florida State up 16-7, uh, late field goal, and then a touchdown drive led by the Hurricanes.
- 19:16SPEAKER_02: Florida State comes down the field with three minutes left, kind of letting the clock go down, set up for a 34-yard field goal, only to miss it to the right.
- 19:27SPEAKER_02: I was sitting on the angle where it looked good, and I was like, yeah, then I remember seeing the Ibis.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I had just moved to Tallahassee that summer from Miami.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: That was my first Miami FSU game in Tallahassee.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Wow.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Epic.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Yep, that's number three.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: It sounds like it's almost like an honorable mention three.
- 19:48SPEAKER_02: What's number two for you?
- 19:49SPEAKER_00: Number two is Wide Right Two.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 19:53SPEAKER_02: That's the 2000 uh prime big time player.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: No, nope.
- 19:58SPEAKER_01: Wide right two was 92.
- 19:59SPEAKER_01: The very next game.
- 20:00SPEAKER_01: The Dan Mallory was a great game.
- 20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, Charlie Ward.
- 20:03SPEAKER_01: Dan Mallory.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: Charlie Ward enters the rivalry.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: Uh Marvin Jones had, I mean, these are games you remember for there was a couple of just all-time hits in that game by both sides.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you you had the Marvin Jones hit, you had the Michael Barrow hit, you had the Tamar Vanover hit.
- 20:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 20:22SPEAKER_01: I mean, like that that was like that is why that's why the Brad Kaya game makes my top list, is because it reminded me of that type of game, the 92 game.
- 20:32SPEAKER_02: Another game that decided the national championship, because it Miami goes on to play for it.
- 20:38SPEAKER_02: Florida State, that's the only loss they had all year.
- 20:42SPEAKER_02: And that field goal would have been a tie, but it would have been enough to get them to the championship, which is just crazy.
- 20:50SPEAKER_02: Think about how these how much you'll never have games that mean so much.
- 20:56SPEAKER_01: The Saturday would have ended in a dot.
- 20:58SPEAKER_02: You can feel it.
- 20:59SPEAKER_02: It's just like you used to just feel devastated.
- 21:02SPEAKER_02: It was that was it, it was everything.
- 21:05SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, so number two.
- 21:08SPEAKER_02: We had that was number two.
- 21:09SPEAKER_02: Number one.
- 21:10SPEAKER_00: Yep, that was number one.
- 21:13SPEAKER_00: Wide right three.
- 21:16SPEAKER_02: Yep, that was wide right three in the OB in 2000.
- 21:21SPEAKER_02: Yep.
- 21:22SPEAKER_02: An epic game.
- 21:24SPEAKER_02: Miami gets off to a 17-0 lead, but um Chris Winky and the Knowles battle back with Anquan Bolden and again comes down to the end.
- 21:36SPEAKER_02: Ken Dorsey.
- 21:38SPEAKER_02: Ken Dorsey with the huge touchdown pass to Shockey.
- 21:43SPEAKER_02: Jeremy Shockey, who was replacing um it was incredible.
- 21:48SPEAKER_02: They still had Winslow, too.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: I think.
- 21:51SPEAKER_02: So it was wow.
- 21:53SPEAKER_01: No, Winslow wasn't even on the roster yet, dude.
- 21:55SPEAKER_01: Shockey was replacing Bubba Frank at tight end.
- 21:58SPEAKER_01: Oh, wow, that's right.
- 21:59SPEAKER_01: I had that.
- 22:00SPEAKER_02: Backwards.
- 22:01SPEAKER_02: But anyway, um Shocky gets a lead, then FSU comes down to miss the third field goal.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: That that's exactly And I remember that game.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: I was supposed to be going with my uh my cousin Sean, who's a couple years older than me, but because it was the surprise tickets for us, he hadn't taken off of work.
- 22:21SPEAKER_01: And he couldn't get off of work that day.
- 22:23SPEAKER_01: So I brought my girl cousin Trisha who could care less about football.
- 22:30SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 22:31SPEAKER_01: And we got there, and uh, for those who don't remember how this game went, Miami was dominating for the first half of that game.
- 22:39SPEAKER_01: And I remember my cousin, Trisha, she was like, hey, let's this game's a blowout.
- 22:45SPEAKER_01: Because the game was at noon.
- 22:47SPEAKER_01: It's like a hundred freaking degrees in the OB.
- 22:50SPEAKER_01: And my cousin, she's like, let's go, let's beat the traffic.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: Miami's blowing them out.
- 22:55SPEAKER_01: This is miserable.
- 22:56SPEAKER_01: I looked at her dead in the eyes and I said, This is Miami, Florida State.
- 23:00SPEAKER_01: It's coming down to a kick.
- 23:03SPEAKER_01: And I was in the end zone.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: We were in the bleachers in the end zone where the kick hooked wide right.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: So I watched it.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: It was I don't think I'll ever have a football experience without that.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: All right.
- 23:14SPEAKER_02: That has a hell of a list.
- 23:16SPEAKER_02: All right, so let's go to the real list, and that's my list.
- 23:20SPEAKER_02: And coming in at number five, we have 1993 FSU over Miami to get over the wide right humps.
- 23:34SPEAKER_02: And what was a really good game between a lot closer than the four ended up?
- 23:39SPEAKER_02: Matt Fryer with the touchdown to take the lead, and then there was a pick six to make it two possession score, but it was it was back and forth.
- 23:48SPEAKER_02: You could feel the tension in the stadium as FSU had the team, they had the guy, and they had to get over the big hump.
- 23:57SPEAKER_02: And Miami was putting up a fight.
- 23:59SPEAKER_02: This is a game the Rock had that sack that you've probably seen.
- 24:03SPEAKER_02: That's his that he shows over and over again.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Look at this Shaq Sack Charlie.
- 24:11SPEAKER_00: I'm gonna put it on the intro to this show.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: Put it on the intro for the U documentary.
- 24:19SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
- 24:20SPEAKER_02: Um, but what a great game that was.
- 24:22SPEAKER_02: Uh I think it was Devin Bush with the pick six.
- 24:25SPEAKER_01: That seemed like it was Devin Bush.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: I hated Devin Bush for a long time over that.
- 24:29SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but that was uh that was that's number five.
- 24:33SPEAKER_02: Um it's hard because these games are so great.
- 24:38SPEAKER_02: This rivalry, when the when the stakes are the highest, it just has a bad taste in my mouth at the end because all the games ended the same way, but they're all different.
- 24:52SPEAKER_02: But and that's why I put that one in there to make sure I had a victory.
- 24:57SPEAKER_02: Number four uh is is another victory by the Knolls.
- 25:04SPEAKER_02: So that I had to get them in.
- 25:06SPEAKER_02: And it and it's and it's the one you had in your list, the block at the rock.
- 25:11SPEAKER_02: I think just the fact that you come up with a play like that uh and a game like this, to me, that that puts it at number four, number three.
- 25:23SPEAKER_02: Uh it's 2002, Miami, FSU, another wide right or wide left one, or if that was uh this game was come FSU was coming off the roles were reversed, they had been where Miami was trying to catch FSU in the late 90s, and and then they had you know coming off the best team ever, maybe returning everybody.
- 25:48SPEAKER_02: Number one, FSU just loses to Louisville, and so they come into Miami with Greg Jones, and they're physical, they get a lead, and they don't go for two, Jeff Bowden, and they go up 27-14.
- 26:03SPEAKER_02: I remember.
- 26:05SPEAKER_02: I remember I was like, Oh, we're gonna lose 28-27.
- 26:11SPEAKER_02: That idiot.
- 26:12SPEAKER_02: Okay, and then uh so that Miami comes back, takes the lead 28-27.
- 26:17SPEAKER_02: Chris Ricks leads them down to field goal range, long field goal range, and but another missed field goal.
- 26:24SPEAKER_02: But that game was really great.
- 26:26SPEAKER_02: It it it was you could feel similar to uh this last game 2026, which is I gotta put it number three, man.
- 26:38SPEAKER_02: I had to put it in there, I know it's immediate, but the way because Miami was number one, so there was a lot at stake here.
- 26:46SPEAKER_02: There was uh FSU.
- 26:48SPEAKER_02: I mean, this is looking for a signature win of his career, and then just the plays, double overtime, and then the the scoring, clutch performances by Malachi Tony, Ashton Daniels.
- 27:01SPEAKER_02: I I believe played his heart out.
- 27:03SPEAKER_02: You had Deuce Robinson with big plays, Mallory stepping up with the runs.
- 27:08SPEAKER_02: I mean, this game is really good.
- 27:11SPEAKER_02: It sucks the refs are gonna be remembered as this is gonna be remembered as the hold, the phantom hold, or whatever they're gonna call it.
- 27:19SPEAKER_02: But it could have been even better, it could have even gone to further overtimes.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: All right, number two.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Um it's gotta be your number one to it.
- 27:32SPEAKER_02: I mean, 2000 FSU was coming off their season where they had just gone undefeated and won the national championship.
- 27:39SPEAKER_02: Miami thinking that this is their this is their time to finally get over.
- 27:45SPEAKER_02: To really re-establish our re-establish our probation.
- 27:49SPEAKER_02: Yep, after the probation, and just to but Miami comes out guns blazing, but FSU responds, and then it's just back and forth like it always is.
- 28:00SPEAKER_02: The drama, I mean, you had Winky through some bad picks, but just like Winky did in college, he ended up throwing for I think like 500 yards in the game, but it comes down to a kick.
- 28:12SPEAKER_02: Miami wins it.
- 28:13SPEAKER_02: You get famous speeches by Santana Moss, big time players show up in big time games.
- 28:20SPEAKER_02: Is number two.
- 28:21SPEAKER_01: Dude, and and another famous one that uh nobody talks about.
- 28:24SPEAKER_01: Of course, you got the Santana Moss, which my God, I I literally just got chills when you said big time players make big time plays and big time games.
- 28:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 28:32SPEAKER_01: But also uh on the field immediately afterwards, ESPN reporter asked Bobby Bowden, and Bobby Bowden's like, Yep, Miami's back.
- 28:42SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 28:43SPEAKER_02: He's yeah, he knows.
- 28:45SPEAKER_02: Um that I I I did not do my list correctly, so we're gonna make it a top seven.
- 28:51SPEAKER_02: How about that?
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: So just all right, I'll throw in a couple extra, because I mean, my god, we could go with the whole freaking day.
- 28:57SPEAKER_02: Well, I forgot, yeah, I that's still everything's in order.
- 29:01SPEAKER_02: Everything's in order.
- 29:02SPEAKER_02: I just forgot one.
- 29:03SPEAKER_02: And it's gonna be number two now, and that's 1987.
- 29:10SPEAKER_02: The infamous go for two and don't get it, and Miami wins after being down by two touchdowns.
- 29:20SPEAKER_02: They hit Michael Irvin.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: He runs and takes it to the house.
- 29:23SPEAKER_02: Florida State comes back to get the touchdown.
- 29:28SPEAKER_02: They could tie the game since they're number one, but nope.
- 29:33SPEAKER_02: I'm going for two.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: Sixty future NFL players play in this game.
- 29:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, that honestly sounds like a made-up statistic.
- 29:43SPEAKER_02: 26-25, an absolute just great game.
- 29:48SPEAKER_02: Yeah, you it just unbelievable plays, unbelievable drama.
- 29:53SPEAKER_02: A little bit before my time, I remember my father telling me about this one, and then it goes to number one for me, and that's 1991, the the game that probably put this rivalry into folklore itself to not have I don't have Wide Right two or three or in, or uh maybe I do.
- 30:16SPEAKER_02: I don't have two on there.
- 30:18SPEAKER_00: Yeah, you got Wide Right Three on there.
- 30:20SPEAKER_02: I didn't remember two.
- 30:21SPEAKER_02: I love the hit, but one to me was the game of the century type feel before that Notre Dame FSU where they first titled it.
- 30:34SPEAKER_02: But this was everything, this was the pinnacle of the sport number one versus number two.
- 30:41SPEAKER_02: It meant you're in the national championship if you win, because it was late in the season.
- 30:48SPEAKER_02: The build-up, the pressure, you could feel the pressure in the air.
- 30:52SPEAKER_02: Florida State had not won a national championship, Miami had already won.
- 30:56SPEAKER_02: So all that pressure, like by for going for two in previous years and being so close and seeing your rival cross the mountain was really really starting to mount up.
- 31:07SPEAKER_02: You could feel it.
- 31:09SPEAKER_02: And to come down to that kick and to see Bobby Bowden run down that sideline like oh he missed it because he thought it was good.
- 31:18SPEAKER_02: It's just it's epic.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: It's in it's even though I it uh it sucks, but it the way it's gotta be atop of my list.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: So there you go.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: There's the list.
- 31:33SPEAKER_00: We had to go.
- 31:36SPEAKER_00: Just in time.
- 31:37SPEAKER_00: Uh shuttle.
- 31:39SPEAKER_02: As we gotta get on out of here.
- 31:41SPEAKER_02: But before we go, I was I mean, you you're right.
- 31:45SPEAKER_02: You're not even mentioning games in 21 or the early 2000s, those.
- 31:54SPEAKER_00: Yeah, the 04 overtime games, dude.
- 31:58SPEAKER_01: I remember that one.
- 31:59SPEAKER_01: Dude, I was in Iraq watching that game.
- 32:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I I was working the night shift, and I was watching the game from my little office, and then it went to overtime, and I put on all my damn body armor in my pack, grabbed my rifle, and ran, ran across the green zone in Baghdad, and got back to my barracks room, flipped on the TV just in time for Frank Gore to pop it and score the game winner.
- 32:26SPEAKER_02: Awesome, man.
- 32:28SPEAKER_02: I mean, there dude, it's my Super Bowl every year.
- 32:30SPEAKER_02: It really is.
- 32:31SPEAKER_02: It's it's a great rivalry.
- 32:33SPEAKER_02: It it was um it was good to see the teams put it, leave it out there.
- 32:40SPEAKER_02: Uh it was good to see the fight from Florida State.
- 32:43SPEAKER_02: It's a shame the refs blew it and gave Mike Norvell maybe another year.
- 32:50SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 32:51SPEAKER_02: They don't have the money.
- 32:52SPEAKER_02: They're looking for a reason to keep him.
- 32:55SPEAKER_00: Oh JJ McDo.
- 32:58SPEAKER_02: Maybe the refs starting off.
- 33:01SPEAKER_01: Maybe the refs broke uh maybe the refs broke FSU's back finally, kind of like the snubs.
- 33:07SPEAKER_01: The snubs sent him down the hill, and now this is the one that's.
- 33:14SPEAKER_02: Um, I mean, even if you won that game, you still wouldn't have been able to like do anything.
- 33:19SPEAKER_02: You still would have had to reset.
- 33:21SPEAKER_02: So make a damn bowl game.
- 33:23SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 33:24SPEAKER_02: There's still, I think there's still a lot to play for.
- 33:26SPEAKER_02: I mean, you still have a real.
- 33:28SPEAKER_00: There's a job, man.
- 33:29SPEAKER_00: I mean, they don't have like a murder.
- 33:31SPEAKER_02: Three and four, you gotta go.
- 33:32SPEAKER_02: If you go three and two, you're six and six.
- 33:34SPEAKER_02: So you gotta win three out of five.
- 33:36SPEAKER_02: It's it it can happen.
- 33:38SPEAKER_00: Beat Boston College, beat Pippi.
- 33:40SPEAKER_02: If you play quarterback, you play with the if you play as hard and as as you did Saturday, it shouldn't be a problem.
- 33:48SPEAKER_02: But that's not gonna, we all know that's not gonna happen.
- 33:53SPEAKER_02: We got uh college hoops getting ready to start.
- 33:56SPEAKER_02: The Gators are the consensus number one, but that's all right.
- 33:59SPEAKER_02: I feel good about the Knowles.
- 34:01SPEAKER_02: We're gonna go over the team.
- 34:03SPEAKER_02: Miami's ranked number 14 preseason, by the way.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 34:06SPEAKER_02: Um that's what I was gonna say.
- 34:08SPEAKER_01: I thought we were in the top 15.
- 34:09SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and I still feel fine.
- 34:11SPEAKER_02: Uh FSU's playing, I think, seven of those 10 or five of the eight.
- 34:16SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
- 34:17SPEAKER_02: We're gonna watch them.
- 34:18SPEAKER_02: We'll pick them tomorrow, and we'll talk to you next time.
- 34:20SPEAKER_02: Right here on the North Florida Sports Network.
- 34:29SPEAKER_02: You gotta give us a shot.
- 34:31SPEAKER_00: You know what I do?
