Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Finally we have an outcome with the secondary school teachers.
- 0:02Speaker 1: They've settle on in a pay agreement with the government
- 0:04Speaker 1: that we'll see teachers get four point six percent over
- 0:07Speaker 1: two years. Remember the government started with one percent a year.
- 0:10Speaker 1: Pip Tinning is deputy principal at a secondary school in
- 0:13Speaker 1: the Bay of Plenty, joins us this morning. Pip, good
- 0:15Speaker 1: morning morning. Did you vote know last time? And then
- 0:18Speaker 1: yes this time? Oh?
- 0:21Speaker 2: Yes, that's actually threat. Yeah it was right on the nose,
- 0:24Speaker 2: wasn't it.
- 0:25Speaker 1: Yes?
- 0:25Speaker 2: Yeah, Dad, Actually, And.
- 0:27Speaker 1: What's changed for you? Or is it the vibes that
- 0:29Speaker 1: have changed? And a time to move on that sort
- 0:31Speaker 1: of thing.
- 0:33Speaker 2: I think what actually swayed me was I didn't think
- 0:37Speaker 2: anything more attractive was going to come with any other offer.
- 0:41Speaker 2: I thought that was as good as it was going
- 0:42Speaker 2: to get. And I just really believe that it's just
- 0:47Speaker 2: one of those things where yeah, I just needed to
- 0:50Speaker 2: vote yes just to get things shifting. We've got a
- 0:53Speaker 2: lot of stuff coming up, and yeah, it was just
- 0:57Speaker 2: it just felt.
- 0:58Speaker 1: Right time to move on, did the union, Because I've
- 1:02Speaker 1: had teachers texting this morning and messaging me saying that
- 1:05Speaker 1: the union didn't recommend Normally they will say recommend don't
- 1:09Speaker 1: vote for this offer, or do vote for this offer,
- 1:11Speaker 1: And this time it was a neutral offer. Do you
- 1:13Speaker 1: think that makes a difference for people.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I think it allows people to make their own minds up.
- 1:22Speaker 2: I think if you've got the union telling you no,
- 1:25Speaker 2: then you know full well that actually it is a
- 1:28Speaker 2: poor offer. And if they're telling you yes, then yeah,
- 1:31Speaker 2: it definitely has a sway. I think this time people
- 1:35Speaker 2: were really pragmatic around their vote.
- 1:39Speaker 1: Do you, if you're being honest, Pip does sometimes does
- 1:42Speaker 1: the union negativity all you?
- 1:44Speaker 2: No?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Okay? Do you think the public is angry at teachers
- 1:48Speaker 1: about results? Well, not teachers, but they're angry upset about
- 1:52Speaker 1: the results that we've been seeing slipping.
- 1:55Speaker 2: I think teachers are doing a fantastic job. I think
- 1:59Speaker 2: the rhetoric around what teachers do or don't do is
- 2:03Speaker 2: really damaging. It's been increasing. I've noticed it's been really
- 2:08Speaker 2: increasing in the media, attacks on teachers, attacks on principles
- 2:13Speaker 2: in our schools, and that's really concerning. We work really hard,
- 2:19Speaker 2: We work really hard for your kids. We love teaching.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You know. We don't get into this because it's like
- 2:25Speaker 2: there's nothing else to do. We get into this because
- 2:28Speaker 2: it's a deliberate choice, so you know where it's Yeah.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But can you understand why people get frustrated with the results,
- 2:35Speaker 1: the fact that they have been going backwards.
- 2:38Speaker 2: They've been going backwards globally. It's not just New Zealand,
- 2:41Speaker 2: it's a global slip. So potentially we all need to
- 2:45Speaker 2: be looking at what's happening within our education sector and
- 2:47Speaker 2: what's happening for our young people.
- 2:49Speaker 1: All right, but appreciate your time this morning. Thank you,
- 2:51Speaker 1: Pip Tinnick.
