- 3:28Speaker 1: what it comes down to. Also, another reminder shifting gears

- 4:34Speaker 1: especially has guided us and helped us and mentored us.
- 4:38Speaker 1: So shoutout Viva. The partnership the community is real. Um.
- 4:44Speaker 1: This is not just an ad um but speaking of
- 4:47Speaker 1: you know, we're going to get into our the government
- 4:51Speaker 1: of today's episode because we have a lot to talk
- 4:54Speaker 1: about with our one episode. We want to take it
- 4:58Speaker 1: back from the beginning and also look forward to what's next.
- 5:02Speaker 1: For look at a radio one percent. We are one
- 5:06Speaker 1: hundred episodes old. We are not a baby podcast. We
- 5:11Speaker 1: are mature. We've we do this like we've done it
- 5:16Speaker 1: at least a hundred times. And we're going to take
- 5:20Speaker 1: a walk down memory lane with you all. And some
- 5:23Speaker 1: of you have been here since episode one. You've been
- 5:26Speaker 1: here since loc epistemologies like the day that it came out,
- 5:30Speaker 1: in the day that we launched the Instagram, and some
- 5:33Speaker 1: of you were in high school and we're literal children
- 5:36Speaker 1: and we low key raised you were mothers. So we're
- 5:40Speaker 1: here to honor and celebrate that. And we just have
- 5:44Speaker 1: a couple of questions that we're going to ask each
- 5:46Speaker 1: other to talk about, the good, the bad, the awkward, um,
- 5:51Speaker 1: the broke because it was never ugly, but there were
- 5:55Speaker 1: times where we were hungover. There were times where we
- 5:57Speaker 1: had no money, but always thriving and pushing towards towards
- 6:02Speaker 1: this moment right now. Yeah, you know one of the
- 6:07Speaker 1: I think not talked about things right or it's not
- 6:12Speaker 1: spoken about as often when you are a founder of something.
- 6:16Speaker 1: A creator of something is like we like tell ourselves
- 6:20Speaker 1: a lot like, Okay, this is temporary, Like this is temporary.
- 6:23Speaker 1: Like during the hard moments, the broke moments, the low moments,
- 6:27Speaker 1: the restless, tired nights right where we were both like
- 6:30Speaker 1: working our nine to fives and like staying up late
- 6:32Speaker 1: to like Prepper Locate Alive and we were exhausted and
- 6:36Speaker 1: had bags under our eyes, we would like tell each
- 6:38Speaker 1: other like this is temporary, Like this is gonna like
- 6:42Speaker 1: be a full time thing, this is gonna be lucrative.
- 6:44Speaker 1: And we weren't doing it for it to be lucrative, right,
- 6:46Speaker 1: That's never been the goal, but along the way it
- 6:49Speaker 1: became a full fledged business, right, And so we're gonna
- 6:53Speaker 1: let's let's start from the beginning and why we launched
- 6:57Speaker 1: look at our radio. What was like the driving force
- 6:59Speaker 1: for you, Mala Well, I mean you honestly, because I
- 7:05Speaker 1: would not have probably would not have started a podcast
- 7:08Speaker 1: on my own unless like somebody had, you had asked,
- 7:12Speaker 1: somebody had asked. So really, I think that like meeting
- 7:16Speaker 1: each other and becoming friends was definitely what allowed all
- 7:21Speaker 1: of this to happen because and we've talked about this
- 7:25Speaker 1: before in bits and pieces, you know, like at this
- 7:29Speaker 1: stage of the game, like I'm twenty nine, I've started
- 7:31Speaker 1: all kinds of projects and things and stuff, but very
- 7:35Speaker 1: few maintain and like grow. But this has right because
- 7:41Speaker 1: whatever it is, we just worked well together and like
- 7:44Speaker 1: this podcast was gonna get made. Like it's like it's
- 7:47Speaker 1: like it has a life of its own and it's
- 7:49Speaker 1: going to find a way to get made. And we're
- 7:51Speaker 1: just like the puppets of local Like yes, that is
- 7:57Speaker 1: so true. Um, yeah know, I you know, had this
- 8:02Speaker 1: idea to start a podcast, and like I always like
- 8:04Speaker 1: to shout out the podcasters that were doing it before
- 8:08Speaker 1: we were, and one of them was radiomena because they
- 8:12Speaker 1: are journalists, they're both writers, they've both been in organizing
- 8:16Speaker 1: activist spaces, and then they also started a podcast, and
- 8:19Speaker 1: so when I first started listening to them, to me,
- 8:22Speaker 1: it was like the most successible thing in the sense
- 8:25Speaker 1: that I was like, well, they have jobs and they
- 8:28Speaker 1: have a podcast, so that's something I could do, right,
- 8:31Speaker 1: And so when I presented the idea to Mala, you know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: it just made sense. It was a perfect fit. And
- 8:37Speaker 1: it really, like Mala said, just took on a life
- 8:39Speaker 1: of its own, and we are the puppets of look
- 8:41Speaker 1: at Radio. Because it was gonna get made, it was
- 8:45Speaker 1: gonna happen. It was just like, you know, not to
- 8:48Speaker 1: be like cheesy, but it's just like the timing, the
- 8:51Speaker 1: cosmic nous of it all. You know, it was supposed
- 8:54Speaker 1: to happen when it did, and it's thrived because it
- 8:58Speaker 1: was supposed to And we're here because as it was
- 9:00Speaker 1: supposed to get us here. Yes, I agree completely. We
- 9:04Speaker 1: had no way of knowing back then that we would
- 9:08Speaker 1: end up where we are now. I don't think the
- 9:11Speaker 1: idea of putting out a hundred episodes ever crossed our minds.
- 9:15Speaker 1: I don't think we had an end goal or like
- 9:17Speaker 1: a vision, and again and again, there was a point
- 9:20Speaker 1: where I think you started. You started talking about, like,
- 9:24Speaker 1: imagine where we are, where we could be in a
- 9:26Speaker 1: year with this, you know, imagine like and and and
- 9:30Speaker 1: I remember being like, oh, she's thinking of this, like
- 9:33Speaker 1: this is like a like a thing thing like this,
- 9:36Speaker 1: you know, And I hadn't. For me. I was like, Okay,
- 9:39Speaker 1: we get together and we put you know, we put
- 9:40Speaker 1: on it like it's fun, like you know. And then
- 9:44Speaker 1: and You're like, and you were like talking about it
- 9:46Speaker 1: in these very sort of aspirational and professional and like
- 9:50Speaker 1: business like terms. And I had never considered that podcasting.
- 9:56Speaker 1: I didn't know. I was very uneducated about the podcasting space,
- 10:01Speaker 1: so I didn't realize that this thing could become. We're
- 10:05Speaker 1: talking about brands and selling ad spaces and talking to networks,
- 10:09Speaker 1: and we have attorneys and so we have a website.
- 10:11Speaker 1: It's the whole thing, you know, and we have a team.
- 10:14Speaker 1: So yeah, it's been definitely, um a learning process for sure. Yeah,
- 10:21Speaker 1: because I think even when I when we first started,
- 10:25Speaker 1: and I would think like in a year from now,
- 10:27Speaker 1: it was never from like a business sense. It was
- 10:29Speaker 1: always from like a community measure Like if at this point,
- 10:35Speaker 1: six months in we have all these women and fem's
- 10:39Speaker 1: community folks resonating with the podcast, imagine where it'll take
- 10:43Speaker 1: us in a year and you know so And I
- 10:45Speaker 1: think that that's why it's worked because we didn't set
- 10:49Speaker 1: out to be a brand. And like, that's what I
- 10:51Speaker 1: really try to emphasize every time we do any type
- 10:54Speaker 1: of podcasting workshop, is like you can tell when folks
- 10:58Speaker 1: are trying to be a brand. They want the podcast
- 11:03Speaker 1: to be a business, you know, and there are pros
- 11:06Speaker 1: and cons to that, right, and sometimes it works and
- 11:08Speaker 1: sometimes it doesn't. Um. Oftentimes I've seen that it doesn't work. Um.
- 11:13Speaker 1: And I think that that's why we have been really
- 11:17Speaker 1: successful because we weren't trying to make a lot of
- 11:20Speaker 1: money off of it. We weren't trying to like be
- 11:23Speaker 1: phony or fake or like gain quote followers. It was
- 11:28Speaker 1: about community and like we're still rooted in that, so
- 11:31Speaker 1: you know, yes, yeah, yeah, And it's interesting because I
- 11:36Speaker 1: think now, you know, I were spend so much time
- 11:41Speaker 1: online and a lot of the online spaces that I
- 11:45Speaker 1: find myself in or like related to digital creativity, arts
- 11:50Speaker 1: and entertainment podcasting, but also now small businesses and you know,
- 11:57Speaker 1: getting funding and pitching and growing your your idea all
- 12:02Speaker 1: these things, because that's the other side of what we're
- 12:04Speaker 1: doing that Like now, I think that that has been
- 12:09Speaker 1: the hardest part for us is taking the like raw
- 12:13Speaker 1: idea that is based in fun and our friends and
- 12:16Speaker 1: our community and realizing like, oh, it's become this big
- 12:20Speaker 1: thing and like we have to professionalize and we have
- 12:24Speaker 1: to address and cover the business side of it. I
- 12:27Speaker 1: think it's been the hardest part, you know, it has.
- 12:30Speaker 1: It's been the most challenging part because we didn't set
- 12:34Speaker 1: off to do that, and so I think now it's
- 12:36Speaker 1: like going if we if I were to give us advice,
- 12:40Speaker 1: like if I were to know all that I know now,
- 12:44Speaker 1: back then, I would say, like give your guests a
- 12:47Speaker 1: release form, don't play fucking Rihanna Beyonce on your podcast
- 12:54Speaker 1: episodes for the full length of the song, you know,
- 12:58Speaker 1: like those things, because we really had no idea what
- 13:01Speaker 1: we were doing or where it would go. And so
- 13:03Speaker 1: like that's the advice I would give us now is like,
- 13:05Speaker 1: don't play copyright music girl, Like, yeah, create your own style,
- 13:10Speaker 1: you create your own songs, which we had the jingle
- 13:12Speaker 1: but it's like at the time, it's like, oh, yeah,
- 13:14Speaker 1: what's wrong with playing Beyonce or Selena jail exactly exactly.
- 13:20Speaker 1: We weren't thinking of copyright and this, that and the other.
- 13:25Speaker 1: I also like that we do just enough research to
- 13:28Speaker 1: like get the thing done, but we don't over research,
- 13:32Speaker 1: and I think that that can be like I feel
- 13:35Speaker 1: like it can be something that holds you back sometimes
- 13:38Speaker 1: like oh I don't know every inch of this thing
- 13:41Speaker 1: backwards and forwards, like I can't speak on it or
- 13:44Speaker 1: work with it. But I think that this project has
- 13:49Speaker 1: also taught me like it's okay to just like do
- 13:51Speaker 1: it and just put it out there and we'll figure
- 13:56Speaker 1: out the rest later. It's gonna work out, you know. Well.
- 14:00Speaker 1: I think the thing too, is like, even if you
- 14:01Speaker 1: do know everything, you're never going to cover it all
- 14:04Speaker 1: in fifty minutes to an hour. So whenever like people
- 14:09Speaker 1: listeners or folks on Instagram comment and say like, oh,
- 14:13Speaker 1: you didn't cover this right or what about what did
- 14:15Speaker 1: you think about this? And I'm like, yeah, maybe we
- 14:17Speaker 1: thought about it, or maybe we didn't. Maybe you just
- 14:19Speaker 1: slipped our minds during the actual recording process, right, And
- 14:22Speaker 1: so a lot of the times, it's just like, well,
- 14:25Speaker 1: we can't cover everything because a lot of the tough
- 14:28Speaker 1: topics that we cover can be their own podcast series,
- 14:32Speaker 1: right or shows. And we have fifty minutes to cover
- 14:36Speaker 1: an extensive list of things, and sometimes we are going
- 14:39Speaker 1: to miss things, right, And so we appreciate when y'all
- 14:42Speaker 1: are like, hey, this would have been a great addition,
- 14:44Speaker 1: but also, you know, we can't cover everything all the time. Yeah,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and like I loved her, remind you all, this ship
- 14:52Speaker 1: is still fret. We're going to address that in the
- 14:56Speaker 1: second half of today's episode. But yeah, it's true. And
- 14:59Speaker 1: I think about back back in the day when we
- 15:02Speaker 1: were still recording at EsPAS thirty nine, we were quite
- 15:06Speaker 1: often showing up to record, um, this podcast a little hangover,
- 15:12Speaker 1: a little sleep deprived, maybe a little blazed, you know
- 15:17Speaker 1: what I mean. So again and again, like we're having
- 15:21Speaker 1: serious discussions or talking about tough things, but we're also
- 15:26Speaker 1: just kind of shooting the ship and just chatting, you know,
- 15:30Speaker 1: like we're not defending a thesis on the podcast is
- 15:34Speaker 1: and that's why I appreciate the format. Also, yeah, it's
- 15:37Speaker 1: audio art. It's an archive, you know, I can like, look,
- 15:43Speaker 1: I can hear certain episodes and be like, wow, we
- 15:46Speaker 1: were like partying all night the night before we recorded this,
- 15:50Speaker 1: and Amala had to go and get us coffee and
- 15:52Speaker 1: like princes from La Monica because we were like dying
- 15:57Speaker 1: and we needed sustenance. You know. It's like those are
- 15:59Speaker 1: like the little behind the scenes things that like you'll
- 16:02Speaker 1: never know, but we know what happened the day of Yeah, okay,
- 16:08Speaker 1: other behind the scenes because I miss this and I'll
- 16:11Speaker 1: be messy and share this because I'm bored and I
- 16:17Speaker 1: need a little drama in my life. So the other
- 16:19Speaker 1: behind the scenes tidbit. When we used to record at
- 16:22Speaker 1: a spas, there was a gentleman. He still exists, a
- 16:28Speaker 1: gentleman who, um, you know, works at a local food
- 16:34Speaker 1: business and and this establishment is close enough to a
- 16:39Speaker 1: spacio that like, you know, we would go being all
- 16:41Speaker 1: cute and put in our food orders and kind of
- 16:44Speaker 1: like flirt with him verbally abuse him a little bit,
- 16:47Speaker 1: like in front of his clientele. And but he loved it.
- 16:49Speaker 1: And then he would like deliver our lunch to us
- 16:52Speaker 1: and like bring it over and like walk it over
- 16:55Speaker 1: to make sure that we ate. While we're like setting
- 16:57Speaker 1: up and outlining and like we're like testing the audio.
- 17:01Speaker 1: He's like, here's your lunch girls. Yes, And then we
- 17:07Speaker 1: ran into him once at a party, lots lots of
- 17:12Speaker 1: times that can leave run into him drunk every drunk
- 17:17Speaker 1: and messy time. Every time we saw him out at
- 17:22Speaker 1: a party, we were we fucked up. And then he
- 17:27Speaker 1: would see us recording and we would like come in
- 17:30Speaker 1: and like we need backles. Can I get the burrito
- 17:34Speaker 1: bowl and a large scale juice please? Thank you? Yeah?
- 17:38Speaker 1: Pretty much, That's exactly what would happen. So shout out
- 17:42Speaker 1: to him unnamed man who fed the podcast. He never
- 17:47Speaker 1: gave us a free meal, never a discount, but he
- 17:50Speaker 1: would deliver the food and for that we appreciate him. No,
- 17:53Speaker 1: I would tell him all the time because he wouldn't
- 17:55Speaker 1: give us free chips. And I'd be like, dude, and
- 18:00Speaker 1: that's why we're not going to shout out the name
- 18:01Speaker 1: of his business. Yeah. I would be like, come on, dude,
- 18:05Speaker 1: like we'd come here all the time, like we have
- 18:09Speaker 1: a rapport. You can't give us chips for free? No,
- 18:15Speaker 1: we would have. We would have given him a free
- 18:17Speaker 1: ad on the podcast, and I, Hoully, I hope you're listening.
- 18:21Speaker 1: You know who you are you know who he is?
- 18:24Speaker 1: He likes to troll the I G. Sometimes he likes
- 18:27Speaker 1: to tell the IG. But you know what, I don't
- 18:28Speaker 1: think he would ever sit through this much of an episode,
- 18:31Speaker 1: to be honest, I don't. I don't think so either.
- 18:34Speaker 1: He'll he'll never know that this happened. It's a love
- 18:37Speaker 1: hate relationship. If any shore you can guess who this
- 18:40Speaker 1: is D M. S. But don't write it publicly because
- 18:44Speaker 1: we would be embarrassed. We would be embarrassed pretty much. Yeah, yes,
- 18:51Speaker 1: that being sad. But that being said, we you know,
- 18:55Speaker 1: prior to the pandemic, we're recording at his fassio for
- 18:58Speaker 1: about three years. And in all of that, right in
- 19:02Speaker 1: the past four years, almost four and a half years,
- 19:05Speaker 1: we've you know, gone all across the country, have delivered keynotes,
- 19:10Speaker 1: facilitated workshops at different universities like Stanford, Northwestern, Williams, u
- 19:17Speaker 1: C L a USC. Shout out to all the students
- 19:20Speaker 1: that have invited us all across the country. I can't
- 19:25Speaker 1: it's like even hard to think about, like a favorite trip,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you know, but like one of one of my favorites
- 19:32Speaker 1: was like Wisconsin, going to Wisconsin. Wisconsin went to Yeah,
- 19:38Speaker 1: I went to Milwaukee. Isn't that in Wisconsin? Oh? I
- 19:42Speaker 1: guess so? Um that was it. That's been its own things,
- 19:49Speaker 1: like traveling and we're like, we don't know where the
- 19:50Speaker 1: funk we're going. It's true. My love really never gon
- 19:53Speaker 1: knows where we're going. She's just like where is this
- 19:55Speaker 1: on the map? What we both are like, where is
- 19:56Speaker 1: this on the map? Um Ben to Mowah hockey. We've
- 20:00Speaker 1: been to Texas of my favorites. To Texas was so
- 20:04Speaker 1: much fun. We've been to lots of places. We have
- 20:08Speaker 1: yet to go to New York. That was like a
- 20:11Speaker 1: goal for but life had other plans. But yeah, we've
- 20:16Speaker 1: been lots of places. Oregon was cool. Oregon was the
- 20:20Speaker 1: first out of state gig that we had, and so
- 20:23Speaker 1: I'll never forget that. The students were great. They were
- 20:27Speaker 1: very chill, they like it. Took us to a really
- 20:30Speaker 1: good Ramen place by campus. They were very fun. I
- 20:35Speaker 1: liked Williams too, because I didn't realize how far up
- 20:40Speaker 1: in the mountains Williams was, and then when we got
- 20:42Speaker 1: there it was like, oh my god, we're really going
- 20:46Speaker 1: into the wilderness. Yes. That and then being in Charlotte'sville,
- 20:51Speaker 1: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, that was wild. Shout out to Garina,
- 20:55Speaker 1: longtime listener, and also invited us out to Charlotte'sville, where
- 21:00Speaker 1: she lives now from She's from California. Um. Yeah, we've
- 21:04Speaker 1: been to lots of places and it's been really exciting.
- 21:07Speaker 1: It's been really great. Chicago was so fun. Chicago was
- 21:11Speaker 1: so much fun. Our broke trip. That might have been
- 21:15Speaker 1: one of my favorites. That might have been my favorite.
- 21:18Speaker 1: That was a lot of fun. We almost missed our
- 21:20Speaker 1: flight back. We had no money, no money, We had
- 21:23Speaker 1: zero dollars, like and in our personal accounts as well
- 21:29Speaker 1: as the podcast account, just no dollars. We had this
- 21:33Speaker 1: like speaking fee, like we had to check, you know,
- 21:37Speaker 1: but it's like we didn't. It wasn't in our account yet.
- 21:40Speaker 1: And it was just the kindness of people around us
- 21:45Speaker 1: who like it got us through and we didn't have
- 21:48Speaker 1: to really ask anyone for I didn't ask anyone. Everyone
- 21:52Speaker 1: offered us, even down to like just rides, like the
- 21:56Speaker 1: ride from the bar at the end of the night
- 21:58Speaker 1: to get hamburgers. My friend Lou drove us. He bought
- 22:02Speaker 1: us food, He got us to our hotel. Your friend
- 22:07Speaker 1: got us to the airport, got us luge and all
- 22:09Speaker 1: these people they offered, Oh, I got it, I got
- 22:13Speaker 1: it all. Take you guys, I'll nobody. Nobody knew we
- 22:16Speaker 1: were broke. We didn't tell anybody. We both we both knew,
- 22:22Speaker 1: but we didn't tell anybody like, hey can you spot me? Hey,
- 22:25Speaker 1: can you get me Nadia? Now it was just us.
- 22:31Speaker 1: We knew, we knew, and we and Mala host And
- 22:34Speaker 1: when we got to the airport, we got to Chicago
- 22:36Speaker 1: and we were waiting for our uber to take us
- 22:38Speaker 1: to the hotel where also our uber driver hit a pedestrian.
- 22:44Speaker 1: The story the story wait wait, wait before before we go,
- 22:48Speaker 1: before we got there, when we're waiting for our uber,
- 22:50Speaker 1: right and we're like, okay, we're broke. I left my
- 22:54Speaker 1: credit cards in l A. Let's like post on the
- 22:57Speaker 1: venmo maybe like some people will send us donation. Is
- 23:00Speaker 1: the first person to the donation was our friend Harvey,
- 23:04Speaker 1: who you know has done lots of work for us,
- 23:07Speaker 1: volunteer work for us, and he sent us a Venmo
- 23:11Speaker 1: and was like, have a little ca facito on me.
- 23:14Speaker 1: And we were like have you know, like not you well,
- 23:17Speaker 1: why would you send us money right now? Um? And
- 23:21Speaker 1: then we got into our Uber and our uber driver
- 23:24Speaker 1: hit up pedestrian and was like, oh I didn't see
- 23:27Speaker 1: him there? Whoofs. It was crazy. It was crazy because,
- 23:33Speaker 1: first of all, let me just say, it's never the
- 23:36Speaker 1: ones who make all kinds of demands of us and
- 23:39Speaker 1: demands of the audio and tell us what to say
- 23:42Speaker 1: and record and criticize this. They're never the ones who
- 23:45Speaker 1: donate money. Ever. That's true. It's always like our selfless
- 23:53Speaker 1: you know, generous friends, our friends, our listeners like that
- 23:57Speaker 1: have been rocking with us. Because like here's the thing.
- 23:59Speaker 1: It's we don't know all of our listeners, but we
- 24:03Speaker 1: do know the ones that are like commenting all the time,
- 24:08Speaker 1: posting dm NG, showing up at events like we we've
- 24:12Speaker 1: been doing this for four years. We recognize the names,
- 24:15Speaker 1: you know, and so we know when like y'all are
- 24:18Speaker 1: sending like multiple venmo donations like within a year or
- 24:21Speaker 1: within a couple of months, that kind of thing, Like
- 24:23Speaker 1: we know that, we know that, and we're like, oh,
- 24:26Speaker 1: look at look at so and so sent us like
- 24:28Speaker 1: the sweet message and like X amount of dollars you know, so,
- 24:31Speaker 1: like we notice. But it's true, it's never the ones
- 24:34Speaker 1: that are talking shit that are sending the never the
- 24:37Speaker 1: ones that are like criticizing the audio and are like, oh,
- 24:40Speaker 1: here's a thousand dollars to pay your audio editor. Exactly.
- 24:44Speaker 1: You think you think good audio just comes out of nowhere.
- 24:50Speaker 1: You good audio cost money, honey. So if you're gonna complaint,
- 24:55Speaker 1: throw us a couple of pins. Jesus h Jesus horation
- 25:00Speaker 1: she oh Christ anyway, so in chaving on where in Chicago?
- 25:06Speaker 1: And so yeah. The what was so wild is the
- 25:09Speaker 1: way that the uber driver hit the pedestrian. I was
- 25:13Speaker 1: like up against the window and his body rolled up
- 25:17Speaker 1: against the window. And the way that the uber driver
- 25:20Speaker 1: said it was like, oh he ran he hit me,
- 25:23Speaker 1: he ran into Yeah, he hit me. He hit me. Also,
- 25:27Speaker 1: Mala like only packed chunk las with her. When we
- 25:32Speaker 1: got to the hotel, she was like, I have to
- 25:33Speaker 1: go to Target, and she like went and had to
- 25:37Speaker 1: buy shoes with her last twenty dollars. Basically yeah, like
- 25:42Speaker 1: they had like one pair of like size seven like
- 25:44Speaker 1: black booties left on sale sale that I could maybe
- 25:51Speaker 1: a born. It was a mess, dude, It was a
- 25:54Speaker 1: sacking mess. But we killed our presentation. Um, we got in,
- 25:59Speaker 1: we got out. Like I remember being at lunch with
- 26:02Speaker 1: your friends, like our final meal there and we're like
- 26:04Speaker 1: eating and I remember thinking to myself, how the funk
- 26:07Speaker 1: are we going to pay for this? And I looked
- 26:10Speaker 1: over at you and you were so hung over. You
- 26:13Speaker 1: were Fiolsa was barely alive, you guys, because we went
- 26:18Speaker 1: out the night before and the fe Juanas bought so
- 26:23Speaker 1: many shots of what Bisco of bischool that I was
- 26:28Speaker 1: I was dead dead, I was gone. Like the next day,
- 26:35Speaker 1: I was like where am I? Who am I? And
- 26:39Speaker 1: in Chicago they kept telling us, you guys need to
- 26:41Speaker 1: try these fried pickles and cheese curds. So we eat.
- 26:47Speaker 1: So we're eating the fried pickles and cheese kurds and
- 26:50Speaker 1: the also is like barely there and this is theos's friend,
- 26:54Speaker 1: and so I'm like, I don't know how we're going
- 26:56Speaker 1: to pay for things. I'm eating the fried pickles and
- 26:59Speaker 1: the cheese curds, but I'm like, we don't have money
- 27:01Speaker 1: for these cheese kurds. But I look over yes, and
- 27:04Speaker 1: you seem relaxed. You seemed like not that worried about it.
- 27:07Speaker 1: So I was like, okay, Like it's gonna be okay.
- 27:11Speaker 1: And your friend offered the favorite everything and it just worked.
- 27:15Speaker 1: It was fine. It was hilarious because she had no idea.
- 27:21Speaker 1: She still doesn't know if she listened, she'll know now,
- 27:24Speaker 1: but she still does not know how broke we were.
- 27:27Speaker 1: And she like offered to take us to the airport,
- 27:30Speaker 1: bought us meals, like bought us on lunch, and then
- 27:34Speaker 1: we almost missed her flight. She was like, oh, you
- 27:35Speaker 1: can just come back with me. It's fine, you can
- 27:37Speaker 1: just stay with me. Like it would have been okay,
- 27:40Speaker 1: but Mole I was wearing this little dress and quitter
- 27:43Speaker 1: run across the airport. Yeah, that was one of the
- 27:47Speaker 1: funniest while this Brokes Brokes trips that we've been on.
- 27:53Speaker 1: Oh yeah, we were like so late to catch our flight,
- 27:57Speaker 1: and like I could not run. I was wearing one
- 27:59Speaker 1: of the of stresses that with every step it rode
- 28:03Speaker 1: all the way up like my labia. We're like waving hello,
- 28:08Speaker 1: like to the people of Chicago, like Nagas were out
- 28:16Speaker 1: that day, like run, I'm like I can't. I was like,
- 28:20Speaker 1: are you gotta run? And we get to that, we
- 28:22Speaker 1: get to the gate and they're like, oh, we were
- 28:25Speaker 1: about to give your seats up. Glad you made it.
- 28:29Speaker 1: But we honestly but we did it. We pulled it off.
- 28:32Speaker 1: We did it, and I do want to share like
- 28:34Speaker 1: that trip was like the most that set the tear
- 28:38Speaker 1: for like our speaking fee that was like speaking on
- 28:42Speaker 1: Northwestern was like the most we had ever been paid.
- 28:45Speaker 1: And then that's set the standard for like, Okay, this
- 28:48Speaker 1: is our worst because people that that's the thing, Like
- 28:51Speaker 1: people tell you this is what you're worth. You always
- 28:54Speaker 1: have to ask for this, and then you do when
- 28:55Speaker 1: people are like, well know, you know, and so then
- 28:59Speaker 1: you're like, well, okay, okay, let me ask for a lesson.
- 29:01Speaker 1: But then once you actually do get paid what you
- 29:03Speaker 1: are worth, you're like, okay, this is literally what I'm
- 29:05Speaker 1: going to get paid. Now you must pay it to me.
- 29:11Speaker 1: We're not doing it. Yeah, it's confusing. It's also confusing
- 29:13Speaker 1: because nobody talks about money. And we'll do a money
- 29:15Speaker 1: episode at some point because we've been in that We've
- 29:19Speaker 1: been in that space for about a year now where
- 29:21Speaker 1: where nobody wants to talk about money, but everyone wants
- 29:23Speaker 1: to ask you for your budget. Yeah, yeah, that's okay. Yes,
- 29:29Speaker 1: a money episode is very much needed, man, and there's
- 29:33Speaker 1: still so much more to cover. We're like still in
- 29:36Speaker 1: our nostalgia part of this episode. We have so much
- 29:40Speaker 1: to talk about, one thing that we've also done multiple
- 29:44Speaker 1: times that is a little bit of our pride and
- 29:46Speaker 1: Joyment's so sad we can't do this now, but look,
- 29:49Speaker 1: I thought alive a podcast party. Our very first one
- 29:53Speaker 1: was at Civic Center Studios. Yeah, at Civic Center Studios,
- 29:57Speaker 1: and we were joined by the lovely Mayamudio and the
- 30:03Speaker 1: very talented Curly Velasquez and we will Curly likes to
- 30:07Speaker 1: call it a baby shower. We did. We did baby
- 30:11Speaker 1: shower games. But if you were if you were there,
- 30:14Speaker 1: if you were there, you know it was a Latinox
- 30:17Speaker 1: variety show and it was a lot of fun. It
- 30:19Speaker 1: was our first live show and we had an after
- 30:21Speaker 1: party after and seeing the way people, seeing the way
- 30:24Speaker 1: y'all our listeners, our community showed up, we were like, oh, well,
- 30:27Speaker 1: we need to make this a thing, and so then
- 30:29Speaker 1: we did. And then after that we had on our
- 30:33Speaker 1: second show, and that's when we had Darina Tomarco and
- 30:37Speaker 1: Julius also at Civic Center Studios. And we love, love
- 30:44Speaker 1: love our DJs that always play our parties, DJ Zuri
- 30:49Speaker 1: and DJ Sizzle Fantastic. They kill it. Every time, and
- 30:53Speaker 1: those parties were so fun. Our very last look, I
- 30:56Speaker 1: thought alive a podcast party, we didn't boil heights at
- 31:00Speaker 1: the Paramount, which is a legendary venue, and we actually
- 31:05Speaker 1: showed a short film that we shot and created and
- 31:09Speaker 1: started called Loki Tha' is Anonymous. You can watch Lokitha
- 31:13Speaker 1: is Anonymous. Actually, it's an eight minute short. It's on YouTube.
- 31:17Speaker 1: It's also on our I G t V. I recommend
- 31:21Speaker 1: watching it on YouTube. It's really fun. Uh Zuri is
- 31:25Speaker 1: in it. DJ Zeri is in it, also Jen from
- 31:28Speaker 1: the Block, Vanessa, Romo, casol Um, Ethical Punk, who else
- 31:34Speaker 1: the trap? You got this Emelie yes, Um yeah. It's
- 31:41Speaker 1: like a star studded Latin X All Star cast and
- 31:47Speaker 1: it's a sci fi short. It's a sci fi short.
- 31:51Speaker 1: It's really cute. Mala created it. It's like was her
- 31:55Speaker 1: concept that we like brought to life and it's really beautiful.
- 31:59Speaker 1: It's like something we want to continue filming at some point. Um.
- 32:03Speaker 1: And so we created that as like a proof of
- 32:07Speaker 1: concept and it was really fun. And so we based
- 32:12Speaker 1: our third look, uh look at the Live podcast party
- 32:15Speaker 1: off of that short, and um we had a DJ
- 32:20Speaker 1: Suti DJ Sizzle and Djaramelo at the Paramount and that
- 32:24Speaker 1: was a lot of fun. It was great and we
- 32:26Speaker 1: had a panel and it was amazing. And that was
- 32:31Speaker 1: the last live show that we did. Yeah, it was sadly,
- 32:36Speaker 1: sadly And now we're we're still doing like talks and
- 32:40Speaker 1: things like that, but we've had to kind of shift
- 32:43Speaker 1: our programming focus away from the parties and the university talks,
- 32:48Speaker 1: and now we we're doing things like recording more episodes
- 32:53Speaker 1: and selling ads space and you know, creating merch like
- 32:58Speaker 1: finding other ways to grow the pot cast since the
- 33:01Speaker 1: in person stuff isn't really possible for us right now.
- 33:09Speaker 1: And and and and and and and and and and
- 33:16Speaker 1: and and and and and and and and and and
- 33:26Speaker 1: and and and and and and and um um um
- 33:38Speaker 1: um um um um um um um um um um
- 33:45Speaker 1: um um of it and bull ship um um um.
- 33:52Speaker 1: Before we get into um looking at look at Dora
- 33:56Speaker 1: in the future, we do want to go over some
- 33:59Speaker 1: podcast glow ups. And I talked about some famously bad
- 34:05Speaker 1: audio before are amazing talented audio editor Jordan's joined our team,
- 34:13Speaker 1: and so one of I think the worst episodes quality
- 34:19Speaker 1: wise audio wise was actually a favorite episode of mine,
- 34:25Speaker 1: which was hypified UM episode that we did with Marvin
- 34:31Speaker 1: and then David Chavez, and they were amazing. They were
- 34:34Speaker 1: so talented, they dropped so much insight. And this was
- 34:37Speaker 1: like at the height of the Panda at the beginning
- 34:39Speaker 1: of the pandemic, and Zoom was like crashing. Like this
- 34:43Speaker 1: is like when Zoom was like inundated. It didn't have
- 34:46Speaker 1: the proper software updates right to like handle all these
- 34:49Speaker 1: people on it, and the quality was like it was
- 34:53Speaker 1: very glitchy. And that's like probably one of the saddest
- 34:56Speaker 1: things is because it was such a good episode and
- 35:00Speaker 1: the quality was so bad because of Zoom. And so
- 35:04Speaker 1: that's like one example of like a glow up from
- 35:07Speaker 1: then to now. Oh yeah. And like we've had listeners
- 35:11Speaker 1: tell us over the years that the audio is not bad,
- 35:13Speaker 1: like big comment, and it's like, yes, this is that
- 35:17Speaker 1: is true. That feedback is valid. UM. So we're super
- 35:24Speaker 1: happy to be in a place where we can bring
- 35:26Speaker 1: on a team. You know, we can work with an
- 35:29Speaker 1: audio editor like Jordan's and compensate her for her skill
- 35:32Speaker 1: and for her time, and it's reflected I think now
- 35:35Speaker 1: in the audio the audio does sound way better. UM.
- 35:39Speaker 1: And as podcasters. It is audio art, so I guess
- 35:42Speaker 1: it matters like the sound quality, it matters that, I guess,
- 35:47Speaker 1: I guess. But the ship is still free, as Mala
- 35:51Speaker 1: always likes to say, Yeah, but it sounds good now,
- 35:55Speaker 1: sounds good now. Yes, we also like other things. Our
- 36:00Speaker 1: website is gorgeous. Mariana, our web designer, is top tier
- 36:05Speaker 1: and she's very talented and she brought our online shop
- 36:09Speaker 1: to life and she built it from the ground up
- 36:11Speaker 1: so we can get all of our look I thought
- 36:13Speaker 1: on merged to you all. We love that. Yes, and
- 36:17Speaker 1: we are also active on Patreon. We have been sharing
- 36:22Speaker 1: airing interviews with Patreon exclusive guest like a Lori Casado's.
- 36:28Speaker 1: We did a panel conversation with Melina Boadilla, gottas, Vette act,
- 36:39Speaker 1: Vette Montoya, a k Evette actually um and us on
- 36:44Speaker 1: Patreon and we talked about Selena the series and that
- 36:48Speaker 1: was an amazing conversation. And then prior to that, Mal
- 36:50Speaker 1: and I have done like zoom calls with our patrons
- 36:54Speaker 1: and that's always really cute to like and fun to
- 36:58Speaker 1: get to know our patrons and in a more intimate way. Yeah,
- 37:01Speaker 1: our patrons are cool. We want to thank our patrons
- 37:04Speaker 1: for also supporting us and supporting the work and wanting
- 37:07Speaker 1: more look at which is always exciting. We also want
- 37:12Speaker 1: to thank, speaking of the merch that we sell, our designer,
- 37:16Speaker 1: Mica Amorrow, who is a very talented artist and she
- 37:19Speaker 1: helps take our ideas and our sayings and she brings
- 37:24Speaker 1: them to life so that we can create the cute
- 37:26Speaker 1: merch that you all have been buying and wearing. And
- 37:29Speaker 1: we love that everything from the stickers to the look good,
- 37:32Speaker 1: talk Me and all baddies go to Heaven stuff that's
- 37:35Speaker 1: micas So check her out as well. Yeah, we have
- 37:38Speaker 1: a team now, which I think is the ultimate glow
- 37:41Speaker 1: up is like all these people are part of our team.
- 37:44Speaker 1: Jessica red Heart Media, who did our season five visuals,
- 37:48Speaker 1: I think these are I've loved all of our visuals
- 37:51Speaker 1: and all the photographers we've worked with, but this just
- 37:54Speaker 1: really kind of screams to me like we have arrived,
- 37:57Speaker 1: We have come into our own like boom, you know. Yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 1: Season five visuals to me scream like boss bitches. They
- 38:08Speaker 1: know what they're doing, they have arrived, They're in it
- 38:12Speaker 1: to win it. Like That's what I think of when
- 38:15Speaker 1: I see when I see Season five, and they also
- 38:18Speaker 1: like funck respectability politics were you know in lingerie and
- 38:24Speaker 1: we're we're glamorous and we're still doing it. Yeah, And
- 38:29Speaker 1: we've been wanting to do lingerie shoots for some time now.
- 38:32Speaker 1: We've been talking about it. It's definitely been in the
- 38:35Speaker 1: plans and this seemed like as good a time as any.
- 38:40Speaker 1: When I showed and our mom's had very different responses.
- 38:43Speaker 1: When I showed my mom um the photo shoot, she said,
- 38:47Speaker 1: and what really, like is the point of the lingerie?
- 38:51Speaker 1: What exactly what was the reason behind the lingdree And
- 38:56Speaker 1: I couldn't really give her an answer other than like,
- 38:58Speaker 1: because we wanted to. Yeah, because I don't literally because
- 39:03Speaker 1: we wanted to, that was that was the reason. That
- 39:06Speaker 1: was the motivating factor. My mom loved it. She was like,
- 39:14Speaker 1: oh my god, mama's legs look amazing. You look amazing.
- 39:20Speaker 1: Like she was just praise on praise and praise on praise.
- 39:23Speaker 1: She loved it. Um. Of course, we like didn't show
- 39:26Speaker 1: my dad um and she was like, what is like
- 39:30Speaker 1: my what she was asking me, like, what is my
- 39:32Speaker 1: partner gonna say? Like? And he was like he was like, oh,
- 39:36Speaker 1: it looks at every everyone looks like, y'all both look amazing,
- 39:39Speaker 1: like everyone, this is like a great concept. He saw it.
- 39:43Speaker 1: Praise on my end, which is good. It's good to know.
- 39:46Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean it doesn't surprise me. Also, like
- 39:48Speaker 1: if my mom had had that reaction like your mom, Mala,
- 39:50Speaker 1: like I would have been like, yeah, okay, it makes sense.
- 39:52Speaker 1: It makes sense, like mom's I'm not okay, I see it.
- 39:57Speaker 1: She didn't hate it. She was just like, so what
- 40:00Speaker 1: direction are you guys taking this pot the concept? She's like,
- 40:08Speaker 1: you just explain it to me. Explain to me, like
- 40:10Speaker 1: I'm a child because I don't get it. That's so funny.
- 40:16Speaker 1: But yes, yeah, so we have just I'm very proud
- 40:21Speaker 1: of us. We've glowed up, like I think in all
- 40:24Speaker 1: ways at this point. Yeah, I agree, and we are
- 40:27Speaker 1: ready for the next glow up. And so the next
- 40:31Speaker 1: glow up we are launching. Look at our productions. You
- 40:36Speaker 1: heard it here first, like literally we've told people behind
- 40:40Speaker 1: the scenes here and there. We've been sharing as we've
- 40:43Speaker 1: been working on it. But essentially, if you've been following
- 40:46Speaker 1: us and listening, then what you've heard over the years
- 40:49Speaker 1: is essentially the building of a production company. We described
- 40:54Speaker 1: our team and our process and our method and how
- 40:57Speaker 1: we built it, and what we are is an in
- 41:00Speaker 1: house production a podcast production company. So we're formalizing it.
- 41:05Speaker 1: We're taking ourselves seriously. We are getting our LLC in order.
- 41:10Speaker 1: We have a team of attorneys, we have our trademark.
- 41:13Speaker 1: We are looking to grow this business into something amazing,
- 41:20Speaker 1: and we want to keep podcasting and we want to
- 41:22Speaker 1: keep making short films and whatever else is in store
- 41:25Speaker 1: for us. So to do that, we need money, and
- 41:29Speaker 1: famously we have done this with no money. But there
- 41:33Speaker 1: comes a time and every like small businesses life, that
- 41:38Speaker 1: you know, we realize that we need to crowdfund, and
- 41:43Speaker 1: that's exactly what we're doing. We're launching our very first
- 41:45Speaker 1: crowd fund. So in alignment with our hundredth episode, we're
- 41:49Speaker 1: announcing that we are starting our road to a hundred
- 41:53Speaker 1: thousand dollars. We are launching an I Fund Women campaign
- 41:59Speaker 1: in the of crowdfunding a hundred thousand dollars towards the
- 42:03Speaker 1: creation of look at that our productions and you also
- 42:06Speaker 1: is going to tell us a little bit more about
- 42:08Speaker 1: what that thousand dollars is going to like cover, like
- 42:12Speaker 1: what how does that help us? Yeah? Absolutely, so, like
- 42:16Speaker 1: As many of you know, Local is completely self funded.
- 42:20Speaker 1: We're an independent podcast. We don't work with a network,
- 42:24Speaker 1: we don't have angel investors, we don't have seed money.
- 42:28Speaker 1: We have completely put our own money into the podcast.
- 42:33Speaker 1: And then once we started making money with our speaking gigs,
- 42:35Speaker 1: our merchant sales are virtual webinars and all of that
- 42:39Speaker 1: good stuff, it's all gone straight back into production costs
- 42:43Speaker 1: and so realistically we don't get paid to produce, to write,
- 42:47Speaker 1: to host look at our radio, And that has been
- 42:51Speaker 1: the driving force of why up until recently, we both
- 42:56Speaker 1: worked full time. Mala is officially a full time employee
- 42:59Speaker 1: Look at that our radio, which is exciting, um. But
- 43:02Speaker 1: that is a big reason why we are launching log
- 43:06Speaker 1: at our productions to not only pay ourselves, but also
- 43:08Speaker 1: pay our team. Well. We have an audio editor, we
- 43:12Speaker 1: have a graphic designer, we have a web designer, we
- 43:14Speaker 1: have a photo visual person Jessica red Heart Media UM.
- 43:20Speaker 1: And we also want to hire more people on because
- 43:24Speaker 1: with launching look at That our radio productions or look
- 43:26Speaker 1: at the our productions, that means that we will be
- 43:29Speaker 1: creating more podcast which means a bigger team, which means
- 43:34Speaker 1: more producers, which means more audio editors researchers, and that
- 43:38Speaker 1: also means that we will not always be hosting a
- 43:42Speaker 1: podcast on Look at the Our Productions. It means that
- 43:45Speaker 1: we will be seeking out new and original talent to
- 43:48Speaker 1: create their own podcast with Look at the Our Productions. Absolutely,
- 43:53Speaker 1: So if you're listening and you see the vision and
- 43:58Speaker 1: you're interested in helping out and supporting, remember to subscribe
- 44:03Speaker 1: to Look at Though our radio first and foremost, if
- 44:06Speaker 1: you're not already subscribing, do that. That's a major way
- 44:09Speaker 1: to help an indie podcast really get it's on its
- 44:13Speaker 1: land legs. And follow the Instagram. You can sign up
- 44:18Speaker 1: to receive our newsletter Bestitos, And if you are following
- 44:21Speaker 1: all these channels, then you are gonna know about the
- 44:26Speaker 1: the opportunity to donate to our crowdfund the minute it
- 44:29Speaker 1: goes live. So we want to encourage everybody to check
- 44:32Speaker 1: out our I Fund Women crowdfunding campaign. And we also
- 44:36Speaker 1: want to share a little bit of like kind of
- 44:40Speaker 1: a little more of a behind the scenes into why
- 44:42Speaker 1: it's so important for us to remain indie and to
- 44:45Speaker 1: create our own production studio and to own our own material.
- 44:49Speaker 1: So as we've sort of shared and hinted that we
- 44:52Speaker 1: have been in talks with different podcasting networks for the
- 44:55Speaker 1: sake of transparency as listeners, I think it's important for
- 44:58Speaker 1: you to like kind of understand and how tricky this
- 45:01Speaker 1: landscape can be and why we keep doing this indeping
- 45:04Speaker 1: the way we do it. So we've talked to like
- 45:07Speaker 1: the major networks, right, and we have a lot of
- 45:11Speaker 1: hope that we can create something with a major podcasting network.
- 45:15Speaker 1: But something that they don't always tell you when it
- 45:18Speaker 1: comes to the idea of creating with a network or
- 45:21Speaker 1: with the studio, is that a network or a studio
- 45:25Speaker 1: that picks up your project is going to want to
- 45:27Speaker 1: make a profit off of your project. And that can
- 45:31Speaker 1: sometimes come with networks and studios desiring to own of
- 45:36Speaker 1: your project, even if it's a completely original idea in
- 45:40Speaker 1: our case look at our radio, right, or wanting to
- 45:45Speaker 1: also um take a percentage of the ad sales that
- 45:50Speaker 1: a podcast might be selling on their project, right, taking
- 45:53Speaker 1: advantage of existing subscribers and listeners, brand recognition and traffic,
- 45:58Speaker 1: stuff that we have worked for years at this point
- 46:01Speaker 1: to cultivate. And it gets to a point where you
- 46:04Speaker 1: realize that if the networks in the studios are interested
- 46:08Speaker 1: in your project, it's because they see a long term
- 46:11Speaker 1: financial gain potentially from owning your project, like as a
- 46:16Speaker 1: property or as an asset. And for us, it's so
- 46:19Speaker 1: important that we own everything, even if that means saying
- 46:23Speaker 1: no sometimes to really enticing offers to work with like
- 46:27Speaker 1: a brand, our network, or not being afraid to negotiate
- 46:32Speaker 1: and to push back and to really stand firm like
- 46:36Speaker 1: on our boundaries and our terms. And that's kind of
- 46:38Speaker 1: what we've been going through recently behind the scenes. And
- 46:43Speaker 1: I think that every conversation we've had with a network
- 46:46Speaker 1: has affirmed our need to keep being indie and to
- 46:49Speaker 1: raise this money on our own and to like establish
- 46:52Speaker 1: our studio for ourselves. Like honestly, there's from what what
- 46:57Speaker 1: we're seeing, I feel like there's no other way to
- 47:00Speaker 1: do it, right. Yeah, it's it's definitely exciting and enticing
- 47:05Speaker 1: when this like really big network is after you and
- 47:09Speaker 1: pursuing you and according you and doing the whole thing.
- 47:12Speaker 1: But the devil is in the detail, right, and so
- 47:15Speaker 1: sometimes the best contracts or the most exciting and ideas
- 47:22Speaker 1: or scenarios aren't actually the most beneficial to you long term.
- 47:26Speaker 1: And so we are committed to continuing the mission of
- 47:29Speaker 1: look At Our Radio, which is to archive the legacies,
- 47:32Speaker 1: geniuses and brilliance of women in films of color. That
- 47:35Speaker 1: is the core of look at and what we want
- 47:38Speaker 1: to continue to do with not only our own podcast,
- 47:42Speaker 1: but with future shows that we create, either for ourselves
- 47:46Speaker 1: for look at the our productions as a part of
- 47:49Speaker 1: look at the Radio, and also future shows that we
- 47:52Speaker 1: produce for other talent and host Absolutely, and we are
- 47:58Speaker 1: constantly looking at our Instagram feeds, are Twitter feeds, honestly
- 48:05Speaker 1: the pool of people who listen to us and follow us,
- 48:08Speaker 1: and we're always thinking about like, Wow, this person would
- 48:11Speaker 1: make a great podcast host. This person would be great
- 48:14Speaker 1: on a podcast. I would love to hear a podcast
- 48:16Speaker 1: by this person. So we're always like all heat thows
- 48:19Speaker 1: out there, honestly, like scouting for talent and thinking about
- 48:23Speaker 1: like as a production company, wanting to create new podcasts
- 48:27Speaker 1: that are completely different than this one, right but like
- 48:31Speaker 1: somehow in the universe and in alignment with like our
- 48:34Speaker 1: our basic mission, we are always like talking about the
- 48:38Speaker 1: possibilities for new shows, you know, different genres and scripted
- 48:42Speaker 1: and with different talents. So just know that, like we're
- 48:45Speaker 1: out here and we want to work with new people
- 48:49Speaker 1: to create new art. And that's part of the reason
- 48:51Speaker 1: why we're launching this crowdfunding campaign so that we can
- 48:54Speaker 1: feasibly get high quality projects made, because, as we've learned,
- 49:00Speaker 1: it takes money to create a high quality podcast with
- 49:03Speaker 1: staying power and really get it out there um in
- 49:08Speaker 1: the way that art deserves to be publicized. Right. So,
- 49:11Speaker 1: we also want to share with you some quick statistics
- 49:14Speaker 1: on female founders women in podcasting to kind of give
- 49:18Speaker 1: you some perspective of the landscape that we're entering into
- 49:21Speaker 1: and why it's so tough and rare, honestly for podcasters
- 49:26Speaker 1: like us to do what it is that we're doing. Yeah,
- 49:30Speaker 1: so of women founders site lack of access to capital
- 49:35Speaker 1: as a number one barrier to starting a business. Also,
- 49:41Speaker 1: women's side, lack of access to a support system, community
- 49:44Speaker 1: and connections to help them level up as another huge
- 49:47Speaker 1: barrier to launching a business. And finally, of women's side,
- 49:53Speaker 1: lack of access to coaches and mentors who have been there,
- 49:56Speaker 1: done that as a major barrier. And that is very
- 49:58Speaker 1: true for the podcasting industry specifically. We know that it
- 50:01Speaker 1: is dominated by white men, and while there are women
- 50:06Speaker 1: of color podcasting companies that have launched. There is still
- 50:11Speaker 1: not enough of them, and we are very excited to
- 50:14Speaker 1: be joining the amazing list of podcast companies and networks
- 50:19Speaker 1: that are founded by women. There are quite a few
- 50:22Speaker 1: in the latin X space, and by quite a few,
- 50:24Speaker 1: I mean like four, you know, but that's that's amazing
- 50:28Speaker 1: for the space. Um, and we want more of them. Yeah.
- 50:32Speaker 1: Of course, there's folks like Mariainosa at Futtle and they've
- 50:37Speaker 1: been killing the podcasting game. UM. We were excited to
- 50:42Speaker 1: chat with Julio over at Latino Rebels UM, which started
- 50:47Speaker 1: out as an indie podcast and they're like ten years
- 50:50Speaker 1: into their podcasting game and they're on a network now
- 50:52Speaker 1: at food Pluto, which is cool. We also, um, you know,
- 50:56Speaker 1: like Twilight daying over at Matriarch, another women of color
- 51:01Speaker 1: indie podcasting production company, and they have a whole slate.
- 51:06Speaker 1: There's Lorie Martinez at Alcina Studios, like a London Paris
- 51:11Speaker 1: based UM latin X podcasting company. So the people are
- 51:16Speaker 1: out there, like it's out the work is out there,
- 51:18Speaker 1: is being done, and we want to join their ranks, um,
- 51:22Speaker 1: which and these are peers and so we take lots
- 51:25Speaker 1: of inspiration from them. We also encourage you to check
- 51:28Speaker 1: them out to kind of like see the vision and
- 51:30Speaker 1: what it is that we're aiming to do with our
- 51:32Speaker 1: little project over here. And yeah, thank you again for
- 51:37Speaker 1: supporting us. We are working to raise a hundred thousand dollars.
- 51:40Speaker 1: We hope that you can help. We also have some
- 51:42Speaker 1: really cool incentives for folks who donate at different cheers.
- 51:47Speaker 1: We are hooking up with different friends and community members
- 51:51Speaker 1: who are artists and creatives and business owners themselves, and
- 51:55Speaker 1: they're donating some gorgeous work. So if you donate, you
- 51:59Speaker 1: will likely also get some local thought emerge and some
- 52:04Speaker 1: other free art to to go along with your donation. Yeah,
- 52:08Speaker 1: and we, of course, you know, thank y'all for getting
- 52:12Speaker 1: us this far and making this work so amazing and
- 52:17Speaker 1: worth it honestly. Um, and also just want to thank
- 52:21Speaker 1: the mentors and friends that have helped us along the way.
- 52:24Speaker 1: We mentioned be the Cosmetics at the beginning of the episode,
- 52:27Speaker 1: and that is so true. They have definitely helped us
- 52:30Speaker 1: and mentored us and given us amazing advice. Um. Lalla
- 52:34Speaker 1: Rometo from Belladonna has also been a mentor to us,
- 52:38Speaker 1: among many of the women that have helped us along
- 52:41Speaker 1: the way. So just know that we are not alone
- 52:45Speaker 1: in this, not at all, not at all, So thank you.
- 52:48Speaker 1: There are so many more people we could think it's
- 52:50Speaker 1: like we're it's like we're accepting a Grammy at this time.
- 52:56Speaker 1: There's just a lot of people that have helped us
- 52:59Speaker 1: along the way. Um, to stay true to who we
- 53:01Speaker 1: are and encourage us. Because when a network is offering
- 53:06Speaker 1: you money, it's very compelling, it's very enticing, exciting, you know,
- 53:10Speaker 1: but we want to stay true to who we are.
- 53:13Speaker 1: Sometimes you have to say now and that that about
- 53:18Speaker 1: concludes our hundredth episode. Thank you so much. This was
- 53:22Speaker 1: a very mediate episode. We had a lot to talk about.
- 53:25Speaker 1: We love you, We appreciate you. Please donate to our
- 53:29Speaker 1: crowd funds so yes, I can quit her job, yes,
- 53:35Speaker 1: help me? No, no, but really, um, yeah, thank you
- 53:39Speaker 1: for supporting us. Um. If you can't share, no, I mean,
- 53:44Speaker 1: if you can't donate, no worries. Feel free to share
- 53:47Speaker 1: with your networks, send to your white friends, your friends,
- 53:52Speaker 1: you know, all of them. There's a cute little video
- 53:55Speaker 1: that accompanies the crowdfunding campaign, so we're going to be
- 53:59Speaker 1: sharing that on the Pagram as well. Yeah, and those
- 54:02Speaker 1: of you. Okay, we know some of our listeners probably
- 54:05Speaker 1: work in finance and vcs and this that we know
- 54:09Speaker 1: we have listeners in high places. So if you are
- 54:12Speaker 1: one of those listeners, just slip the crowd funds to
- 54:16Speaker 1: somebody whose whose pockets spill it over, you know, if
- 54:21Speaker 1: you know one of those people, just yeah, if you
- 54:24Speaker 1: know Mark Cuban sent it to him, you know. All right, everybody, um,
- 54:31Speaker 1: remember to leave a comment, let us know what you
- 54:33Speaker 1: thought of this episode, Subscribe, follow share and that's all.
- 54:40Speaker 1: See those radio radio radio Commi's a myth and bullshit,
- 54:57Speaker 1: a radio phonic novella. Look at that radio hosted by
- 55:01Speaker 1: Malamunos and diosa fem
