Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_03: This is Americ Studios Podcast on this week's show.
- 0:05SPEAKER_07: The crazy part about that story is that was a unoff like that was probably one of the first unofficial remixes I ever done.
- 0:13SPEAKER_07: And it became so big that when Aaliyah came to the tunnel to perform, she said, I want to do that version, get in touch with those guys and fly us up to New York.
- 0:22SPEAKER_07: So my first time actually leading Aaliyah was on a tunnel on stage, and I actually have the video and pictures of her staying in my verse with me.
- 0:30SPEAKER_07: And three, two, one.
- 0:32SPEAKER_01: I'm DJ Enough.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: I'm DJ Camillo.
- 0:35SPEAKER_01: I'm DJ Cast One.
- 0:37SPEAKER_01: And I'm Len Books, a K-L Books.
- 0:39SPEAKER_01: Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, everyone worldwide, this is the Heavy Hitter DJ's podcast.
- 0:49SPEAKER_01: Yes, sir.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: We're at it again to Heavy Hitters Invading the Podcast World.
- 0:53SPEAKER_01: What's going on, everybody?
- 0:54SPEAKER_01: Introduce yourself real quick up top.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: Who we got?
- 0:56SPEAKER_07: The Heavy Hitter DJ Lonnie B, Richmond, Virginia.
- 0:58SPEAKER_02: Party Rocker, Heavy Hitter DJ coming alive from Queens.
- 1:01SPEAKER_02: Hello.
- 1:01SPEAKER_00: What's up, everyone?
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: It's the Lee of the DJ, Richmond, Virginia, man.
- 1:04SPEAKER_02: Hi everybody.
- 1:05SPEAKER_03: It's DJ Cast One.
- 1:06SPEAKER_03: We here, we here, we here.
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Yo, it's the boss of all bosses, big Spanish DJ enough, aka El Presidente.
- 1:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and we at it again, y'all.
- 1:14SPEAKER_01: The heavy hitters, we here.
- 1:16SPEAKER_01: Um, and of course, y'all to everybody over at Riverside.
- 1:19SPEAKER_01: And today, we want to introduce to a few more of our members, because, you know what I mean, internationally known, you know what I mean, and all that.
- 1:25SPEAKER_01: But real quick, my man DJ Camillo, I want to tap into this because you are, and you you call yourself, and it's absolutely true, the international club king, right?
- 1:33SPEAKER_04: Yes.
- 1:34SPEAKER_01: And it's understood.
- 1:35SPEAKER_01: And we got the receipts for it and all that.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: But when you first got just, you know, nostalgia, bro.
- 1:40SPEAKER_01: When you first got that phone call, yo, leave the United States, come DJ here.
- 1:43SPEAKER_01: What did you get a good deal?
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: That's why I always wanted to ask you.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: No, no.
- 1:46SPEAKER_04: The first time I went overseas was with the beat nuts.
- 1:49SPEAKER_04: So Juju from the Beatnuts called me up, said, We need a DJ.
- 1:52SPEAKER_04: We're going to Switzerland.
- 1:54SPEAKER_04: And I was like, Whoa, can you come?
- 1:56SPEAKER_04: Hands down, I didn't even think about it.
- 1:58SPEAKER_04: I said, We're there.
- 1:59SPEAKER_04: The minute I got there, we landed, we went to this big ass fucking like warehouse.
- 2:03SPEAKER_04: You know, they're getting ready for the concert.
- 2:05SPEAKER_04: I'm walking through the crowd.
- 2:06SPEAKER_04: They got stands and sending mixtapes, and my mixtape's there.
- 2:09SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, oh shit.
- 2:12SPEAKER_04: Like, how's my mixtape here in Switzerland?
- 2:14SPEAKER_04: This is like 99, you know.
- 2:16SPEAKER_04: Internet was, yeah, right.
- 2:18SPEAKER_04: So I was like, wow, you know, so so through that mixtape, I met the person um um selling the mixtape who knew the promoter that sold the mixtape, and then that's how I connected.
- 2:28SPEAKER_04: When I came back to New York, they called me up.
- 2:30SPEAKER_04: Can you come and do a gig in Germany?
- 2:32SPEAKER_04: And that's how it all started, about 99, 98, 98.
- 2:35SPEAKER_04: And with your boy Sia?
- 2:37SPEAKER_04: With my boy Sia, heavy rotations, overseer Cia.
- 2:40SPEAKER_04: I gave him his name.
- 2:41SPEAKER_04: Look at him.
- 2:42SPEAKER_04: So I I landed in um Munich, Germany.
- 2:45SPEAKER_04: I did a joint in Heidelberg, and it all started from there, man.
- 2:48SPEAKER_04: From there on, I've been, man.
- 2:50SPEAKER_01: But what was the vibe though?
- 2:51SPEAKER_01: Did you know where you should have played?
- 2:53SPEAKER_01: Well, you shouldn't have played, or you just went off.
- 2:55SPEAKER_04: Well, per that first concert, I started learning and see what it was.
- 2:58SPEAKER_04: Back then, it was super backpacked, underground.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 3:01SPEAKER_04: Uh anything Wu-Tang, gang star, fucking most deaf, and and you know, so on and so forth.
- 3:07SPEAKER_04: That was the wave.
- 3:08SPEAKER_04: That was the you know, hip-hop was really at its biggest over there at that time.
- 3:12SPEAKER_04: You know, um, Simon says, get the fuck up, all that shit.
- 3:15SPEAKER_04: Like, right, right, right, right, right, right.
- 3:17SPEAKER_04: That whole ever.
- 3:18SPEAKER_04: And you know, that was that was my lane.
- 3:20SPEAKER_04: Like, this is a no-brainer.
- 3:22SPEAKER_04: Like, so, so it was, mind you, back then we traveled with seven crates of records.
- 3:28SPEAKER_04: Which you see in a bag, like, like, like, yeah, seven crates on a fucking flight.
- 3:32SPEAKER_04: It's crazy that back then, you were able to check in two, sometimes three if it was overseas, and not get charged a dime.
- 3:40SPEAKER_04: And you know, so I used to bring my man Utah Bomb, he makes three crates, I bring three crates and a bag, and we were out.
- 3:47SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, so so back then it was crazy.
- 3:50SPEAKER_04: We used to get away with like traveling.
- 3:52SPEAKER_04: Nowadays they charge you for everything.
- 3:55SPEAKER_01: For everything.
- 3:56SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: But you but you going back and forth to to Germany and all these other countries, obviously, every time you're learning a lesson, and obviously every time you're like, Y'all played this last time, now I gotta play this, etc.
- 4:07SPEAKER_01: etc.
- 4:08SPEAKER_04: To the point that sometimes a crate or two wouldn't make it.
- 4:11SPEAKER_04: So you had to be prepared for that.
- 4:13SPEAKER_04: So I would pack up a certain way just in case.
- 4:15SPEAKER_04: Oh, if this crate don't make it, that crate makes it.
- 4:17SPEAKER_04: Well, I can know I could play this, you know, just to be on the safe side.
- 4:20SPEAKER_04: You start to learn these things.
- 4:22SPEAKER_04: Um and then you start to learn how to pack up, you start to learn different, like I got booked in Russia, I got booked in Japan, we got booked in Dubai, I did a join in Malaysia.
- 4:31SPEAKER_04: These sections, they're different.
- 4:33SPEAKER_01: You know, and what did the did the um did the mixtape game help you a lot?
- 4:37SPEAKER_04: I never asked you this before.
- 4:38SPEAKER_04: 1000%.
- 4:39SPEAKER_04: That's what got me there.
- 4:40SPEAKER_04: The mixtape game got me there because I saw that mixtape and I stepped to the guy selling and the guy new promoter from there on.
- 4:46SPEAKER_04: The mixtapes it was like Instagram for us.
- 4:49SPEAKER_04: That was like our way of promoting ourselves.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: Like that was it.
- 4:52SPEAKER_04: That was our promo tool.
- 4:54SPEAKER_04: So 1,000% due to the mixtapes.
- 4:56SPEAKER_02: So, quick question.
- 4:58SPEAKER_02: Before you started, you know, DJing internationally, had you traveled internationally?
- 5:02SPEAKER_02: I mean, anywhere besides like the regular shit, anywhere besides like Columbia or besides like you had never gone anywhere international.
- 5:08SPEAKER_02: So before that, my question.
- 5:10SPEAKER_02: All right, so how was your food experience?
- 5:13SPEAKER_02: Nervous.
- 5:14SPEAKER_02: It was nervous.
- 5:15SPEAKER_04: You know, I I can't since since I got to since my first gig was in Germany, Germany food is trash.
- 5:21SPEAKER_04: It's straight up trash.
- 5:23SPEAKER_03: That's what I was trying to grab.
- 5:25SPEAKER_03: Trying to get there.
- 5:26SPEAKER_03: So what you gotta say?
- 5:27SPEAKER_04: So back then, nah, it was trash.
- 5:29SPEAKER_04: So back then, what was the safe spot?
- 5:30SPEAKER_04: McDonald's is go ahead.
- 5:33SPEAKER_04: McDonald's was like, okay, is there a McDonald's there in that town?
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: Okay, good.
- 5:37SPEAKER_04: And you know, the craziest shit is we went to McDonald's and they sold, they sell beer McDonald's.
- 5:42SPEAKER_04: Like, we were like, whoa, they don't sell beer in McDonald's in New York, like or the States.
- 5:47SPEAKER_04: They sell beer fucking McDonald's back then.
- 5:49SPEAKER_04: Like, crazy.
- 5:50SPEAKER_02: So but what else they did at McDonald's in Germany that that got me tights is we on the subject?
- 5:55SPEAKER_02: You have to pay for ketchup.
- 5:57SPEAKER_02: Yeah, they probably let you for ketchup.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 5:59SPEAKER_02: That's a fact.
- 6:00SPEAKER_02: They charge you for ketchup.
- 6:01SPEAKER_02: You want to ketchup?
- 6:02SPEAKER_02: That's the extra euro.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 6:04SPEAKER_04: But you know, the also the I you start to learn, like, like, then we started hitting like the Turkish spots.
- 6:09SPEAKER_04: Like, there's a lot of people from Turkey in Germany, and we was eating kebabs.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Oh my god.
- 6:14SPEAKER_04: Once we got to kebabs or like gyros, that was like, okay, they got that over there.
- 6:19SPEAKER_04: All right, let's go over there.
- 6:20SPEAKER_04: Take us over here or take us to an Italian spot because then we know we could get lasagna or be on the safe side.
- 6:25SPEAKER_04: But German food?
- 6:26unknown: No.
- 6:27SPEAKER_04: Was it messing with the schnitzel?
- 6:28SPEAKER_04: With the schnitzel.
- 6:29SPEAKER_04: Yo, horrible, horrible.
- 6:31SPEAKER_04: You know, I went to I went to Finland.
- 6:33SPEAKER_04: I went to Finland one time, and you know, I tried deer.
- 6:35SPEAKER_04: Deer is very big in Finland.
- 6:37SPEAKER_04: Did you have the deer balls?
- 6:39SPEAKER_04: No.
- 6:40SPEAKER_04: Whoa.
- 6:42SPEAKER_04: Conversation point left.
- 6:43SPEAKER_02: I'm just saying, is the they have it.
- 6:45SPEAKER_02: No, no deer balls.
- 6:47SPEAKER_04: It was, it was deer and cranberry.
- 6:48SPEAKER_04: It was bugged out, but feed it.
- 6:50SPEAKER_04: You got to know the good thing they do have in Germany, though, is like beer.
- 6:53SPEAKER_04: The beer was amazing over there.
- 6:56SPEAKER_01: And then and then now you are the international club king.
- 6:59SPEAKER_01: And then how'd you bought how'd you bring that all back home?
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 7:02SPEAKER_01: Because I know like when we travel with E or Cash travels all the time, you come back home with a better understanding of what it is.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Because I know like people, Japan and all of that, they study this, right?
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: You get like classic.
- 7:12SPEAKER_04: Yo, Japan shits on us, man, because they take the culture serious, bro.
- 7:17SPEAKER_04: They study it, they love it, they learn it, they know their history.
- 7:21SPEAKER_04: We like over here, I look at these kids.
- 7:23SPEAKER_04: Like, y'all guys don't even know like Japan, they do their homework.
- 7:26SPEAKER_04: Even if it's sneakers, their sneaker game is illler than ours because they just love it with passion, man, and they respect it, you know.
- 7:33SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, you get to learn different regions, you get to learn other DJs, you get to meet other DJs, talk to them.
- 7:39SPEAKER_04: They tell you, they tell you what it is, what's vibing over there.
- 7:42SPEAKER_04: You know, uh when I DJ'd in Dubai, I started to learn so much about Afrobeats.
- 7:47SPEAKER_04: And you know, this is many years later.
- 7:48SPEAKER_04: I'm talking like nowadays, their whole wave is different.
- 7:51SPEAKER_04: Like you get to learn how Europe moves too.
- 7:55SPEAKER_04: Like Europe goes down south for vacation, so they come to Dubai, or or you get like mad bottle spenders from um Russia, Moscow, go to Dubai and party.
- 8:04SPEAKER_04: You get to learn all these little things, these music that you never heard of that pops there.
- 8:09SPEAKER_04: Even like German rap or French rap, like you get to learn.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: I know, I know.
- 8:13SPEAKER_04: Remember back in the day, I used to follow Enough.
- 8:15SPEAKER_04: Enough used to fuck with like uh uh the French scene heavy, and um, you know, you get to learn like just to travel it, like it's it's a beautiful thing.
- 8:23SPEAKER_04: They did a French album, bro.
- 8:24SPEAKER_04: I know, I know, I know, I remember that.
- 8:27SPEAKER_04: That's crazy.
- 8:30SPEAKER_01: Yo, Cass, on that, every time, I mean, besides having a street named after you in Japan, um every time every time you travel, like, like again, do you re-educate yourself every time you land over there and then you come back home?
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: Do you always bring something back?
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: Or you're like, yo, I've been here so many times, it is what it is.
- 8:47SPEAKER_02: Um, well, you mean specifically Japan?
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Specifically?
- 8:50SPEAKER_02: Yeah, because you go there the most, correct?
- 8:52SPEAKER_02: Don't quite.
- 8:53SPEAKER_02: I'll be everywhere.
- 8:54SPEAKER_02: But the thing is that like you always, every time you go somewhere, you're gonna learn something new, right?
- 8:58SPEAKER_02: Or you gotta take it upon yourself to learn something new.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: I took it.
- 9:00SPEAKER_02: Yo, hold on.
- 9:01SPEAKER_03: Did you see that flex when he said, nah, I go everywhere?
- 9:03SPEAKER_02: Did you hear that?
- 9:04SPEAKER_02: Okay.
- 9:06SPEAKER_02: But besides the DJ, we also, you know, we travel a little bit.
- 9:08SPEAKER_02: You know, we gotta see the world.
- 9:12SPEAKER_02: Hold up a second.
- 9:13SPEAKER_04: DJ Cass 1 is the only Dominican that I know has been to Antarctica.
- 9:17SPEAKER_04: Talk about travel.
- 9:18SPEAKER_04: Like, yo, who the fuck's been to Antarctica?
- 9:21SPEAKER_02: Hold up, Camillo.
- 9:23SPEAKER_02: South Pole and North Pole.
- 9:24SPEAKER_03: Because I was at the North Pole earlier this year.
- 9:25SPEAKER_03: You heard me?
- 9:26SPEAKER_03: Anyway, heard me.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 9:28SPEAKER_03: Yo, I don't know who should have the moniker now.
- 9:30SPEAKER_03: Should it be Camillo or should it be Cass One?
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Cass One.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: Well, no, no, no.
- 9:34SPEAKER_03: Camill does not be called.
- 9:36SPEAKER_01: Because Cash Cash Cash travels for work and leisure.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Camill only cares about leisure for color money.
- 9:41SPEAKER_01: That's all he cares about.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: Camillo gets to the bag.
- 9:46SPEAKER_01: But the reason I asked you guys this question is to keep letting people know that, like, you know, you're from New York, but your name rings bells somewhere else internationally, et cetera.
- 9:54SPEAKER_01: And I just want to educate everybody.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: We started in New York, but our reach is incredible.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: And now I want everybody to make some noise.
- 10:01SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: For the legendary Lonnie B, Alia the DJ.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the chat.
- 10:06SPEAKER_01: Welcome to the baby.
- 10:10SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 10:11SPEAKER_01: And Lonnie B, we don't even got to talk about it, my brother.
- 10:14SPEAKER_01: We gotta talk about it, but we will.
- 10:16SPEAKER_01: The legendary status that um we're gonna talk about it, correct.
- 10:19SPEAKER_01: And I'm gonna be honest with you, man.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: When they brought up your name years ago, I was like, hell yeah, are you crazy?
- 10:25SPEAKER_01: Like, why y'all even asking the question?
- 10:27SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:28SPEAKER_01: And I always wanna tell people this.
- 10:30SPEAKER_01: Like, not only when you join this family, this conglomerate, like you're joining some powerful shit, but you're bringing your own.
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: You know what I mean?
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: You can stand on your own.
- 10:39SPEAKER_01: And that's why I always, always loved about all of us.
- 10:43SPEAKER_01: And yes, I'm a hater when it comes to putting anybody down.
- 10:46SPEAKER_01: But if you bring me a name like Lonnie B, and I'm like, like, you're crazy?
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: Like, why wouldn't we do that?
- 10:51SPEAKER_01: And um, Lonnie, like, you you've done it, man.
- 10:54SPEAKER_01: You've done the production.
- 10:55SPEAKER_01: You actually, you know, kick a few verses here and there.
- 10:58SPEAKER_01: And like, how do you keep that balance, my brother?
- 11:01SPEAKER_07: Um, first off, for me, it's it's it's still um surreal.
- 11:05SPEAKER_07: I remember when I got the phone call to be a part of heavy hitters, like, you know, realistically, if you think about the entire crew, I'm from Richmond, Virginia, which is probably in the bottom three markets of everybody and the crew, but that doesn't mean that because I'm in a small market, then my presence and my brand can't be as big as everybody else.
- 11:23SPEAKER_07: I was always inspired by um the crew.
- 11:26SPEAKER_07: I was inspired by when I was will see Camillo's lineups, like how do you have that many fly parties on one fly?
- 11:33SPEAKER_07: So I had always dreamed about getting to the point where I can do that and travel, um, you know, to go out out of the country.
- 11:39SPEAKER_07: But for me at this point, man, it's just all about um just understanding the game, seeing where things go on, and just just staying um, staying relevant to my tribe.
- 11:48SPEAKER_07: You know, it's it's it's not it's not important for me to feel like I gotta be DJ Lonnie B to Aaliyah's audience.
- 11:54SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 11:54SPEAKER_07: I think as long as I keep that focus, I'll be able to ride my wave, you know, to the sunset.
- 11:59SPEAKER_01: So yeah, but but what you do, and and and I've been around you and we've been in the presence of you, and it's like you do your own thing, man.
- 12:06SPEAKER_01: Ain't nobody gotta, whatever.
- 12:07SPEAKER_01: It is what it is.
- 12:08SPEAKER_01: Whatever Lonnie's doing, it's gonna it's a championship coming out of that.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Now we switch over to Leah.
- 12:13SPEAKER_01: Was this a was this like a conversation you were like, was this a thing?
- 12:17SPEAKER_01: Like, yo, one day gonna be a DJ and the day, or did you just happen like out of nowhere, Leah?
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: So I used to go to the radio station with him all the time, and like I would just, you know, touch the turntables, and he told me, like, you know, you could actually do this.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And I'm like, Are you serious?
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: Like, I didn't think so.
- 12:30SPEAKER_00: So then from there, we would practice, and then I would be like, yo, can I get on?
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: He's like, nah, I gotta go to the club.
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: And so then he would just start leaving his um studio unlocked.
- 12:38SPEAKER_00: So I just go in there and I practice, and then we started making YouTube videos together.
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: From there, it's just it's history.
- 12:44SPEAKER_01: Did you cat did you catch her doing that?
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Breaking into the room, or you knew she was breaking into the room all the time.
- 12:52SPEAKER_04: You know what's the beautiful thing about that?
- 12:54SPEAKER_04: It's organic, man.
- 12:55SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 12:56SPEAKER_04: Like I can't I can't get my son for dear life to get on a set, or even try, or even care.
- 13:01SPEAKER_04: Like, he's like, eh, whatever.
- 13:03SPEAKER_04: My son, my dad does.
- 13:04SPEAKER_04: But to see that, that's like it's just like, it's beautiful, man.
- 13:07SPEAKER_07: Now, the funniest thing though, at a certain point, um, you know, I really wanted Aaliyah the DJ.
- 13:12SPEAKER_07: When I saw that she was pretty good at it, I wanted her to lock in on it.
- 13:16SPEAKER_07: And it might have been a year or two after she started, she said that she didn't want to do it anymore.
- 13:21SPEAKER_07: And she was afraid to tell me because she thought that I would be upset.
- 13:24SPEAKER_07: And I told her that, listen, I want you to follow your passion.
- 13:27SPEAKER_07: So if this is not what you want to do, you don't have to do it.
- 13:30SPEAKER_07: I packed the turntables up that I had in her room, put them back in my room, and at a certain point, she came back and said she wanted to get back to it, and the rest is history after that.
- 13:38SPEAKER_01: Well, Aliyah wasn't saying that you just you just thought you couldn't do it anymore.
- 13:41SPEAKER_01: You just like, you're whatever, I want to do something else.
- 13:44SPEAKER_00: So if I'm being 100% honest, I've never really told my part of this story.
- 13:48SPEAKER_00: I got caught up into comparing myself to other people.
- 13:51SPEAKER_00: So I would see people like DJ Livia, Young Fresh Prince, and they traveling with like, you know, working with Kanye West and everybody.
- 13:58SPEAKER_00: So I was like, dang, like, why am I not there?
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: But you know, I was just like, I can't, I can't uh compare myself to others.
- 14:05SPEAKER_00: Like, I gotta focus on myself, do what I can do, and then level up like that.
- 14:08SPEAKER_01: So And as you should, because you standing on your own.
- 14:12SPEAKER_04: Everybody, everybody got their own lane, man, and and that's a great thing that I at least you know you you thought about it, you said, Oh, I'm gonna give up, but then you came back, and like you can't everybody got their own story, man.
- 14:23SPEAKER_07: One thing I wanted Aaliyah to focus on, and I wanted to make sure she remembered when she when I watched a lot of those kids DJs, a lot of them were dope, but they were DJing, I felt like they were DJing for us.
- 14:34SPEAKER_07: You know, the Peter Pipers and all the other stuff, which is dope, you know, for the culture.
- 14:37SPEAKER_07: But what I wanted her to make sure is tap into what you what your audience is listening to.
- 14:42SPEAKER_07: Because they will be the ones that's gonna grow with you for the next 30, 40, 50 years.
- 14:47SPEAKER_07: So you know, they your audience might not even care about people like a tribe called Quest and stuff like that.
- 14:52SPEAKER_07: So that was real important that I want to make sure she knew that.
- 14:54SPEAKER_01: Hey, was was is this the first this was the first time we did this, right?
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: Like bringing in, you know what I'm saying, the bloodline into this, right?
- 15:02SPEAKER_01: This is the first time we did this, correct?
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 15:05SPEAKER_01: Okay, no, I'm just gonna go.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: I was gonna bring DJ Kwa in, who was little Taj's uh dad.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: I was like, this is perfect, let's go for it.
- 15:17SPEAKER_01: Nah, everybody was ready for the jump.
- 15:19SPEAKER_01: Nobody even thought about it.
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: We were like, yo, nobody even bought it.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: That was so dope.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: No, like it was.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: Right, because we were all like, yo, nobody's ever bought this, not even in the conversation.
- 15:28SPEAKER_01: And then when we saw this happen, and now not only are you a DJ, now you a heavy hitter, man.
- 15:34SPEAKER_01: Like, like, like what how was that when you went back to the crew?
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Like, yo, I'm I'm When you went back to the crew and was like, yo, not only am I DJ and they believe in my craft, I'm down with the most ever, ever, everything conglomerate, Leah.
- 15:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, nah, I felt like that part, it definitely shocked me because as a kid, like I used to grow up listening to DJ Taj and all his remixes.
- 15:57SPEAKER_00: So when I found out this is my brother, I was hype.
- 15:59SPEAKER_00: And getting the follow back was enough, Camilla, I'm like, yo, like they're legends.
- 16:05SPEAKER_03: That's dope.
- 16:06SPEAKER_04: That's beautiful.
- 16:07SPEAKER_04: You know, the beauty of it now, fast forward many years later, you know, I feel like Lonnie B, you know, your daughter wants to become a DJ.
- 16:17SPEAKER_04: I think off the rip, she's a heavy hitter because it's grandfathered in.
- 16:21SPEAKER_04: It's like, it's like, it's like DJ Lobo, and I don't want to move at and it's son, Chris G, like he's a he's a DJ.
- 16:28SPEAKER_04: He's like automatic.
- 16:30SPEAKER_04: There shouldn't be a question at this point.
- 16:31SPEAKER_04: And I talked to Satan off.
- 16:32SPEAKER_04: I said, you know, if the next kid was, if my son wants to be a uh a DJ, he's automatically a heavy hitter.
- 16:38SPEAKER_04: I don't, you know, it's in the blood, baby.
- 16:40SPEAKER_04: Like, you better be nice.
- 16:41SPEAKER_07: Don't come with that.
- 16:43SPEAKER_07: That was the one thing I wanted to make sure.
- 16:45SPEAKER_07: Like, um, I want to make sure Aaliyah was right.
- 16:48SPEAKER_07: You know, I didn't want her to just come in because she was my daughter.
- 16:52SPEAKER_07: I want her to make sure that that she was, you know, tight with the mixes.
- 16:56SPEAKER_07: Like, even to this day, I don't know if I've ever said this publicly, but um, at a certain point on the radio when I didn't want to do my mixes, I would tell Aaliyah, Aaliyah, do a mix, just put the heavy hitter drop in there, and I'm gonna just run it like it's me.
- 17:08SPEAKER_07: And people would hit me and say, yo, you're killing it, you're killing it.
- 17:11SPEAKER_07: I'm thinking to myself, yeah.
- 17:14SPEAKER_07: So I want to make sure that's it.
- 17:17SPEAKER_04: Yo, yo, so so did the PD know that that was going on?
- 17:21SPEAKER_07: No.
- 17:22SPEAKER_07: Well, he found out he felt a certain type of way about it because I was trying to, I wanted her to take over the five o'clock spot.
- 17:29SPEAKER_07: And he was like, he didn't know if she was ready.
- 17:31SPEAKER_07: And that's when I was like, yo, she's already been doing the mix, though.
- 17:34SPEAKER_07: So how is she not ready?
- 17:35SPEAKER_07: Like, I've been playing her mixes.
- 17:36SPEAKER_07: The race that we got in at 5 o'clock was already because can you say she's not ready?
- 17:42SPEAKER_07: And then he tried to change the subject, like, you know, you're not supposed to do that.
- 17:45SPEAKER_06: So you know, PD taunt, PD taunt.
- 17:48SPEAKER_01: Too late, too late, PD.
- 17:50SPEAKER_01: I love that.
- 17:52SPEAKER_01: So, um, like we we have how many times we have this in the crew?
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: We have uh we have we have one twice, right?
- 17:57SPEAKER_01: Aaliyah and Lonnie and then um Lobo Chris.
- 18:00SPEAKER_02: We got Lobo enough, EJ.
- 18:04SPEAKER_02: Come on, can't forget by Ray USA, baby.
- 18:06SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 18:07SPEAKER_04: Producer of the year.
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: Yeah, we was just literally running his uh all his stuff in the other room, and the people here were married now, they were like, no way.
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: No, what?
- 18:17SPEAKER_01: Chris, like yeah, man, you've been busy, bro.
- 18:20SPEAKER_01: Aaliyah, what what's what's the what's the um what's the plan here?
- 18:24SPEAKER_01: Like, what besides you about to be Dr.
- 18:26SPEAKER_01: Aaliyah the DJ in a minute, but what's the plan here with the music and the DJ stuff?
- 18:32SPEAKER_00: Right now, I'm just in a space of just continuing continuing to grow my brand.
- 18:36SPEAKER_00: So just continuing pushing content and all of that, especially with like where we're at right now with social media and stuff.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: So continue to do that.
- 18:43SPEAKER_00: I want to low-key getting my producer back.
- 18:44SPEAKER_00: So I've been trying.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: I'm not gonna lie, my beats are trash right now, but like we're gonna look back in like five years.
- 18:51SPEAKER_05: So development.
- 18:53SPEAKER_02: Aaliyah, how how old were you when you started on the radio?
- 18:56SPEAKER_01: Wait, on the radio goes DJ.
- 18:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you mean like you had which matters on the radio, don't matter.
- 19:03SPEAKER_02: Here's where the stunt comes in.
- 19:07SPEAKER_00: I I think what was it?
- 19:09SPEAKER_00: 13, maybe 14?
- 19:10SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah, 13 years old, bro.
- 19:13SPEAKER_02: That's crazy.
- 19:15SPEAKER_02: Take that.
- 19:17SPEAKER_02: Would that make her like the youngest DJ on the set on the radio?
- 19:21SPEAKER_02: Oh, wow.
- 19:22SPEAKER_02: You might not even have to talk about it.
- 19:23SPEAKER_07: Yeah, she's a youngest.
- 19:26SPEAKER_02: It might be a thing.
- 19:27SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:28SPEAKER_01: You should run with that.
- 19:30SPEAKER_02: And since we're talking about stunting, is what I like to talk about.
- 19:33SPEAKER_02: Lonnie B's way too quiet, bro.
- 19:35SPEAKER_02: All you DJs out there that talk crazy about your libraries and your little little songs, your little computers.
- 19:41SPEAKER_03: Your whole life.
- 19:42SPEAKER_02: Let me tell you something right now.
- 19:43SPEAKER_02: Let me tell you, let me with the camera.
- 19:44SPEAKER_02: Look, let me tell you something right now.
- 19:46SPEAKER_02: Don't you ever fix your face to look to come to Lonnie B talking about your computer library.
- 19:51SPEAKER_02: Your little heart drive.
- 19:53SPEAKER_04: There's two people that are holding that category.
- 19:56SPEAKER_04: Who's Mr.
- 19:57SPEAKER_02: C and Lonnie B.
- 20:00SPEAKER_02: That those two I love Mr.
- 20:02SPEAKER_02: C.
- 20:03SPEAKER_02: I know Mr.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: C's library.
- 20:04SPEAKER_02: I've seen it.
- 20:05SPEAKER_02: Rest of B know it.
- 20:07SPEAKER_02: But he's my guy.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: I gotta say something.
- 20:08SPEAKER_02: He's not touching Lonnie B's library.
- 20:12SPEAKER_02: He would get mad at me for saying this, but it's facts.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: Hold on.
- 20:15SPEAKER_03: This is the difference between Mr.
- 20:16SPEAKER_03: C and Lonnie B.
- 20:17SPEAKER_03: All right?
- 20:18SPEAKER_03: Here we go, here we go.
- 20:19SPEAKER_03: If I would ask Mr.
- 20:20SPEAKER_03: C for a record, he'd be like, all right, here goes the record, right?
- 20:24SPEAKER_03: But he would take away the information on the record.
- 20:28SPEAKER_03: All right?
- 20:29SPEAKER_03: He'd delete everything.
- 20:30SPEAKER_03: Meaning, meaning, tell him, meaning like the year, the title, the year, the composer, the name of the album, the track versions, the whatever.
- 20:39SPEAKER_03: He would take away the information.
- 20:41SPEAKER_03: And he would make even a few points, but he would take it away.
- 20:44SPEAKER_03: Lonnie B won't ever do that.
- 20:46SPEAKER_03: He would just give you everything.
- 20:48SPEAKER_03: That's a fact.
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: To this day, me and Lonnie B are like this.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: If I ever need a record, I'm calling him ASAP.
- 20:55SPEAKER_03: I remember one time.
- 20:56SPEAKER_03: The greats, the grandmaster flashes, the grandmother Theodores.
- 21:00SPEAKER_03: Like for real, for real.
- 21:01SPEAKER_03: Like sending some music because I'm gonna send it to them.
- 21:04SPEAKER_04: I remember one time Lonnie B was like, yo, just um send me a hard drive and um I'll just put everything on there.
- 21:10SPEAKER_04: That guy's unheard of, man.
- 21:12SPEAKER_04: That's beautiful, bro.
- 21:13SPEAKER_04: I was like, wow.
- 21:14SPEAKER_04: So, you know, sent up the hard drive and you know, the cleans, it was cleans, and I need a good quality and you know, it's not a good idea.
- 21:22SPEAKER_07: When it comes to the music organization, man, I'm just I've always loved been a music lover before DJ.
- 21:28SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 21:29SPEAKER_07: So just um having all the information that you were talking about, E, is um, it's almost like the cheat code to DJing.
- 21:35SPEAKER_07: Like when you have years right, if I'm if I'm doing a set and I could type in Neptunes and it'll pull up all of my tracks that's produced by the Neptune.
- 21:42SPEAKER_07: Even when you're dealing with radio, I have um where it charted on the um billboard.
- 21:47SPEAKER_07: So that's crazy.
- 21:49SPEAKER_07: Program director said, I only want you to play the hits.
- 21:51SPEAKER_07: I can prove that everything I played was top ten.
- 21:53SPEAKER_07: Like it's super nerd, but to me it's like a cheat code for when I'm, you know, doing my different things.
- 22:01SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna give you an example.
- 22:02SPEAKER_03: I just called him about a week ago and I said, yo, there was a Am I gonna move him coming into America?
- 22:07SPEAKER_03: He's like, Yeah, of course.
- 22:09SPEAKER_03: There's a part where he's going into St.
- 22:10SPEAKER_03: John's where they're playing the basketball game, right?
- 22:13SPEAKER_03: And there's somebody on the line who noticed this was a princess.
- 22:16SPEAKER_03: But behind him or in front of him was a rapper that Ralph McDaniels used to play the videos all the time.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: I called Ralph McDaniels, he didn't know who was.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: I called Lonnie B, hit me back, can't nine Posse.
- 22:29SPEAKER_03: I said, let me check.
- 22:31SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's it.
- 22:34SPEAKER_03: In my mind, I'm like, how'd you know that?
- 22:36SPEAKER_03: Musicary.
- 22:38SPEAKER_03: It's just no, it's nuts because it's it's not listed.
- 22:40SPEAKER_03: He's not listed in the movie.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: He has no credits, no nothing.
- 22:43SPEAKER_03: It's a random dude online at St.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: John's doing the movie.
- 22:48SPEAKER_03: I just happened to recognize his face because I, you know, I'm into rap.
- 22:52SPEAKER_03: That was Eddie Moore.
- 22:55SPEAKER_03: Right, Pop?
- 22:56SPEAKER_04: Speaking about, speaking about rap, let's let's talk about this real quick.
- 22:59SPEAKER_01: See, the blows that I come with.
- 23:01SPEAKER_01: I talking numb stuff about Apro and the things I do.
- 23:04SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna show you what side of this thing.
- 23:07SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna be honest.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: I don't care how many times we see Lonnie, how many years go by, I'll be like, you know you got rap, bro.
- 23:12SPEAKER_01: Like at some point, I'm making rap all the time.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: We're gonna drop the record at some point.
- 23:18SPEAKER_04: Like no matter what.
- 23:19SPEAKER_04: But those that don't know, that's Lonnie B on the League of Record who fucking murdered that song.
- 23:25SPEAKER_04: Like we were like, that's Lonnie B.
- 23:27SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, a lot of people don't know.
- 23:30SPEAKER_01: No, but but but uh but on top of like, oh, that's Lonnie B, we were like, he really bodied that though.
- 23:35SPEAKER_01: Like he really wanted Maflo.
- 23:38SPEAKER_07: How'd that come about, Lonnie?
- 23:40SPEAKER_07: The crazy part about that story is that was a unofficial, like that was probably one of the first unofficial remixes ever done.
- 23:48SPEAKER_07: It wasn't an official remix.
- 23:49SPEAKER_07: We just put our verses on it.
- 23:51SPEAKER_07: Um we started playing it in Richmond, the Buddha brothers in 757 started playing it, and somehow it got to New York, and enough, I think you and Flex started playing it.
- 24:01SPEAKER_07: And because of that, y'all.
- 24:02SPEAKER_03: I just can't say I I played it.
- 24:04SPEAKER_03: Yeah, first after you said that.
- 24:06SPEAKER_03: My bad.
- 24:06SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:07SPEAKER_03: Sorry, y'all.
- 24:08SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 24:09SPEAKER_07: Um you you played it, and it became so big that when Aaliyah came to the tunnel to perform, she said, I want to do that version, get in touch with those guys, and fly us up to New York.
- 24:20SPEAKER_07: So my first time actually leading Aaliyah was on a tunnel on stage, and I actually have the video and pictures of her staying in my verse with me.
- 24:28SPEAKER_07: So it wouldn't have happened if it wasn't for you enough.
- 24:30SPEAKER_07: I appreciate you.
- 24:31SPEAKER_04: Oh man, see that that's beautiful.
- 24:33SPEAKER_04: Don't you wish Don't you wish those phones were in effect back in the days where everybody's like this recording?
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 24:38SPEAKER_04: Like, that's you know, like we don't we don't have those moments.
- 24:41SPEAKER_04: Back then, if we would have had those moments, uh, just being able to like, but as much as we hate the phones now, you know what I mean?
- 24:47SPEAKER_01: That would have been a good moment to have in it.
- 24:50SPEAKER_01: And then uh I got the whole show.
- 24:51SPEAKER_07: I got the whole show.
- 24:52SPEAKER_07: Um it was a video show from New York that was video on that night.
- 24:56SPEAKER_07: And uh he had posted it and I actually ripped it.
- 24:59SPEAKER_07: So I have the whole show with Timberland, us, Aaliyah, and the tunnel performing that song.
- 25:04SPEAKER_04: What year was that?
- 25:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what year was it?
- 25:06SPEAKER_07: 1998.
- 25:07SPEAKER_02: 98, the tunnel in New York.
- 25:09SPEAKER_02: Aye, aye, aye.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Amazing.
- 25:10SPEAKER_02: Oh, I just thought about something.
- 25:12SPEAKER_02: I have a question.
- 25:13SPEAKER_02: Aaliyah, have you and Lonnie B ever battled each other and who's won?
- 25:19SPEAKER_00: We did.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: We did.
- 25:20SPEAKER_00: It was a daddy-daughter battle in Richmond.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: I think I won.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: The crowd said I won.
- 25:27SPEAKER_05: Let's go.
- 25:28SPEAKER_05: Let's go, Aaliyah, let's go.
- 25:30SPEAKER_07: She won.
- 25:30SPEAKER_07: I let her win.
- 25:32SPEAKER_05: He said, I let her win.
- 25:35SPEAKER_01: It's confirmed.
- 25:36SPEAKER_01: It's confirmed.
- 25:36SPEAKER_03: It's one of our battles.
- 25:38SPEAKER_03: I think um, I don't know if I meant Lonnie B that day or prior to that, but um the make sure power summer was a thing.
- 25:45SPEAKER_03: We were in Miami.
- 25:47SPEAKER_03: We were about to hop on this violator boat ride, and there was a rapper by the name of Jojo Pellegrino.
- 25:53SPEAKER_04: Oh man.
- 25:54SPEAKER_04: I remember Staten Island was signed.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: He was signed.
- 25:56SPEAKER_03: He was getting ready to rap, do his thing, and I don't know, he kind of like maybe just disrespected Lonnie B in some way, shape, or form.
- 26:04SPEAKER_03: And they got at each other on the on a boat and they battled.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: And Lonnie B gave him an ass whooping.
- 26:10SPEAKER_07: I never knew that.
- 26:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 26:12SPEAKER_07: Now, so what it was, it was um the violator boat run.
- 26:15SPEAKER_07: I think at a certain point, Gravy, Red Cafe, and JoJo Pellegrino were rapping.
- 26:20SPEAKER_07: Because I was a rapper as well.
- 26:22SPEAKER_07: I just went to grab for one of the mics so I could rap with them.
- 26:25SPEAKER_07: One of the guys handed me a mic, and I think JoJo, when he saw me holding the mic, he just started, you know, going at me.
- 26:31SPEAKER_07: And I don't know if it's because he saw my DJ tag, he thought I was like on some DJ cool type vibes.
- 26:36SPEAKER_07: Like I was really a battle rapper, you know, just as long as I was a DJ.
- 26:39SPEAKER_07: So um he didn't see that coming.
- 26:42SPEAKER_07: He didn't see it coming.
- 26:43SPEAKER_07: I got that video too.
- 26:44SPEAKER_01: Lonnie giving the business.
- 26:47SPEAKER_04: Do you understand why he's the musical library?
- 26:49SPEAKER_04: He got the video too.
- 26:51SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 26:52SPEAKER_07: But JoJo was dope then.
- 26:55SPEAKER_07: Jojo is dope now.
- 26:56SPEAKER_07: Like I know a lot of people that still bring it up.
- 26:58SPEAKER_07: I know that he's still doing his thing.
- 26:59SPEAKER_07: So um he, you know, I definitely respect him as the MC for sure.
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: Yo, I didn't see him in my timeline for almost like 20 years.
- 27:05SPEAKER_03: And only recently popped up in my timeline.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 27:08SPEAKER_07: Recently he popped up.
- 27:10SPEAKER_07: He's still doing his thing.
- 27:11SPEAKER_07: That's crazy.
- 27:11SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 27:12SPEAKER_07: Shout out to Jojo.
- 27:13SPEAKER_07: In 98, 98, that same power summit, E.
- 27:15SPEAKER_07: That's the first time that I met you face to face, and we took a picture.
- 27:18SPEAKER_07: So that picture that I have from the Make Show Power Summit was from that same year.
- 27:22SPEAKER_02: And we'll be right back.
- 27:24SPEAKER_02: And now, back to the show.
- 27:26SPEAKER_02: Just another another quick Lonnie B tidbit, because I'm just thinking of all the Lonnie B tidbits that I have over the top of my head.
- 27:31SPEAKER_02: He was also, you know, he's always been on the forefront of like tech, also.
- 27:35SPEAKER_02: So he was actually the first DJ.
- 27:37SPEAKER_02: It was him and Green Lantern were the first DJs I ever saw on Cerrado.
- 27:41SPEAKER_02: They put it on.
- 27:42SPEAKER_02: Because of Lonnie B, Lonnie B was the reason that me, ain't enough, got on Cerrado.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: Facts.
- 27:48SPEAKER_02: Like there was there was no other reason.
- 27:50SPEAKER_02: Because we we did a party.
- 27:51SPEAKER_02: I think it was it was probably a birthday party for 10 years.
- 27:56SPEAKER_02: Yeah, so we went to Lonnie B.
- 27:59SPEAKER_04: I need the year.
- 28:00SPEAKER_04: I need the year.
- 28:01SPEAKER_04: What year was that?
- 28:02SPEAKER_02: That had to be like 0504.
- 28:05SPEAKER_01: Now it was about 304?
- 28:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah, you guys went for a few of the birthdays.
- 28:09SPEAKER_01: I remember that.
- 28:10SPEAKER_04: Lonnie, I want to ask you.
- 28:11SPEAKER_04: This was a question.
- 28:12SPEAKER_04: Lonnie, like I'm sorry.
- 28:13SPEAKER_04: Like the so the the vinyl to Serato change.
- 28:17SPEAKER_04: Did you hate it?
- 28:18SPEAKER_04: Did you love it?
- 28:19SPEAKER_04: I love it.
- 28:20SPEAKER_04: Or you just you loved it.
- 28:21SPEAKER_04: I was I was always I hated it.
- 28:23SPEAKER_04: You did you hated it?
- 28:25SPEAKER_04: I hated it.
- 28:26SPEAKER_04: I was I was core to the nah, we can't go to the computer.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: You cried.
- 28:29SPEAKER_04: I was that guy.
- 28:30SPEAKER_04: I was like, nah, the final forever.
- 28:33SPEAKER_07: Yeah, Mr.
- 28:33SPEAKER_07: C was the same way when I used to tell Mr.
- 28:35SPEAKER_07: C about it.
- 28:36SPEAKER_07: But the um convenience of it, like when you carry so many records all your life, to be able to walk somewhere and somewhere with a backpack and be able to rock a whole party.
- 28:45SPEAKER_07: Now I was the last heavy hitter to switch over to Mac.
- 28:48SPEAKER_07: I was using a PC.
- 28:49SPEAKER_05: You used a double computer.
- 28:52SPEAKER_05: That's it.
- 28:53SPEAKER_07: I remember that.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 28:54SPEAKER_07: I was also, I mean, I don't know, it's a another small tidbit.
- 28:57SPEAKER_07: I was probably the first DJ to ever use Serato on national TV.
- 29:02SPEAKER_07: Um I talked to Jed Def about it.
- 29:04SPEAKER_07: He was probably one of the first people to use it, but he wasn't using it on TV.
- 29:08SPEAKER_07: When I did Rap City, I was the first person to um actually use Serato on TV.
- 29:13SPEAKER_04: Serato, you heard that?
- 29:14SPEAKER_04: Did you hear that, Serrado?
- 29:16SPEAKER_04: Hello?
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 29:17SPEAKER_02: So we went down to do his party, and we had like, you know, we had crates.
- 29:21SPEAKER_02: We had like four or five crates, and we had CD books because we didn't know what the hell it was.
- 29:25SPEAKER_02: So mind you, we lugging all this stuff to Virginia and we taking everything into the club, and here comes Lonnie B with a book bag.
- 29:30SPEAKER_02: Enough looks at me, he goes, Never again.
- 29:34SPEAKER_02: Get back to New York.
- 29:35SPEAKER_02: We're going to surround.
- 29:37SPEAKER_02: Like, all right, let's do it.
- 29:39SPEAKER_02: You know, it's funny.
- 29:41SPEAKER_01: We learned our crate lesson in that spot we used to do in YO.
- 29:44SPEAKER_01: Remember, it was a theater enough.
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: And once you got in, you had to go up a ladder.
- 29:47SPEAKER_01: Not stair.
- 29:48SPEAKER_03: Up a ladder, not stairs.
- 29:49SPEAKER_01: A ladder.
- 29:50SPEAKER_01: Not stairs.
- 29:51SPEAKER_01: It was a ladder, bro.
- 29:52SPEAKER_01: So we had to come up with a system of one on the bottom.
- 29:56SPEAKER_03: Palladium.
- 29:57SPEAKER_01: One palladium and new shell.
- 29:59SPEAKER_01: And then someone up top.
- 30:00SPEAKER_01: It was like rescuing the crates every week, yo.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: So I know when y'all got the Serato cracking, it was a relief from everybody.
- 30:06SPEAKER_01: And plus, you had to have five extra people saying I'm with him because I'm carrying the crate.
- 30:11SPEAKER_01: So those people lost a job too when the crates came into the picture.
- 30:16SPEAKER_03: Also, shout out Lonnie B.
- 30:17SPEAKER_03: I got to witness him getting the key to the city from the mayor of his town with his wife, his family, and all of his friends that he grew up with and the industry guys.
- 30:27SPEAKER_03: He kind of like, it was just amazing to see that.
- 30:29SPEAKER_03: I thought that was like I was in tears.
- 30:32SPEAKER_01: Lonnie puts on for the town.
- 30:33SPEAKER_01: I I've definitely seen that throughout here.
- 30:35SPEAKER_01: Lonnie definitely put on for the town.
- 30:36SPEAKER_01: Richmond VA stand up, baby.
- 30:38SPEAKER_01: For real.
- 30:39SPEAKER_07: That was a humbling moment for me because, again, in the crew, anybody knows me in the crew, I'm probably one of the most quiet people in the room.
- 30:45SPEAKER_07: I don't really say a lot.
- 30:47SPEAKER_01: He talk with these, he talk with these, he talk with these.
- 30:50SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 30:51SPEAKER_07: I put a lot of work in.
- 30:52SPEAKER_07: Sometimes, you know, you wonder if it's even noticed or appreciated.
- 30:56SPEAKER_07: So to walk into that room and my grandmother there, all of my friends, and the mayor of the city hands you the key to the city, you know, in that moment, if you you felt unseen, you you felt recognized in that moment.
- 31:07SPEAKER_07: And it was, you know, definitely um an emotional moment for me.
- 31:10SPEAKER_01: Yo, what can you what can you do with that key though?
- 31:12SPEAKER_01: Like, what's the what's the what's the benefit to the key?
- 31:15SPEAKER_01: Absolutely nothing.
- 31:17SPEAKER_01: Right there.
- 31:20SPEAKER_02: You can't even get it.
- 31:21SPEAKER_02: You can show up in all that.
- 31:22SPEAKER_02: That's all you can do.
- 31:23SPEAKER_02: I'm talking crazy, Brooks.
- 31:24SPEAKER_02: Show me your key to the city.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
- 31:26SPEAKER_02: You know what I mean?
- 31:27SPEAKER_02: Come on, Lonnie.
- 31:28SPEAKER_02: Be not talking that talk.
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: What can I open?
- 31:30SPEAKER_02: Yo, show me your key to the city, bro.
- 31:32SPEAKER_01: The reason I asked is because I know about three to four people that have gotten the keys to whatever respective city, and they'll be like, You can't do nothing with it, fam.
- 31:39SPEAKER_01: You can't even get away with a pocket ticket or the market.
- 31:41SPEAKER_04: That's Brian rights, that's all.
- 31:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 31:46SPEAKER_01: And um, Lonnie, how uh coming from your market, and then you know, you get the call from the number one market from Enough and all of that.
- 31:53SPEAKER_01: Like, all along, did you ever feel any type of pressure because you came from that market to always compete with the bigger markets outside of your area?
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: As far as um When it came to the radio stuff, when it came to the club, and it came to the yeah, you know, people knowing the name Lonnie B.
- 32:07SPEAKER_07: Nah, it was so I'll I'll, you know, let not just sound cocky.
- 32:10SPEAKER_07: I've always been confident when it came to like, you put me in any room with any DJ, like, regardless of who they are, I'm gonna make an impact and somebody's gonna be like, and who was that again?
- 32:20SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 32:20SPEAKER_07: So I've never it's never been a thing where I felt like my my marking represented uh my confidence, you know what I'm saying?
- 32:27SPEAKER_07: Um, but it still it was it was always been humbling for me because, you know, again, coming up in radio, I got in radio around 98.
- 32:34SPEAKER_07: So, you know, hearing the heavy hitter drop.
- 32:36SPEAKER_07: I think I I actually, when I became a heavy hitter, I ripped the heavy hitter drop.
- 32:40SPEAKER_07: He used to have a um mixtape called the E-Spot, I believe.
- 32:43SPEAKER_07: Was it the E-spot?
- 32:44SPEAKER_07: The Souljam mix?
- 32:45SPEAKER_07: So it was a slow jam mix.
- 32:47SPEAKER_03: It was a bite off the G-spot, yep.
- 32:48SPEAKER_07: Yep.
- 32:49SPEAKER_07: Um it was a um, what was the the cornerstone mixtapes?
- 32:53SPEAKER_07: I have a cornerstone mixtape with actually all of y'all were on it.
- 32:55SPEAKER_07: Like bulls, all of y'all were on it.
- 32:57SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 32:57SPEAKER_07: So again, like at this point, I'm just a fan, you know, thinking to myself how dope it would be to be a part of that crew.
- 33:04SPEAKER_07: So um, yeah, nah, it was it was an amazing moment when I got the call to be down.
- 33:08SPEAKER_03: Ali about how you started or created Art of Noise.
- 33:12SPEAKER_07: Yeah.
- 33:13SPEAKER_07: Um I loved that.
- 33:14SPEAKER_04: Well, tell them what Art of Noise is first, because a lot of people don't know.
- 33:17SPEAKER_04: Break it down, Paul.
- 33:18SPEAKER_07: Break it down.
- 33:19SPEAKER_07: Yeah, when when when when I've been in radio now, sh I think it's 28 years.
- 33:22SPEAKER_07: It's like 28, 29 years now.
- 33:24SPEAKER_07: The one thing that I noticed that the the rooms that I DJ'd in started to look a little different.
- 33:29SPEAKER_07: And one of the things that Danger Mouse said to me when we were at one of my parties, he said, I've never been to one of your parties that was so packed but felt so empty.
- 33:36SPEAKER_07: And I was like, yo, what do you mean?
- 33:38SPEAKER_07: He said, look around.
- 33:39SPEAKER_07: None of these are the people that came up with you when you were doing the parties before.
- 33:43SPEAKER_07: So I recognized that there was a shift in the type of music.
- 33:47SPEAKER_07: So a lot of the music that I wanted to play, I couldn't play no more because this is more the era of the Jeezys and the more the trap music.
- 33:54SPEAKER_07: So I wanted to go back to a place where I could play the music that I love.
- 33:58SPEAKER_07: I wanted to play the gang star records, I wanted to play the Faroe March records.
- 34:02SPEAKER_07: So even at that moment, I had to go to a smaller room.
- 34:04SPEAKER_07: I was like, I wanted to do it.
- 34:05SPEAKER_07: So me and my partner, um, my friend DJ B from 757, we started a party here called The Autonoise, where it was just playing nothing but that type of stuff.
- 34:14SPEAKER_07: It was a hundred people there.
- 34:16SPEAKER_07: But what made it unique was when people left, they was like, I haven't had this much fun in a long time.
- 34:23SPEAKER_07: Like they actually danced, it wasn't about the VIP sections.
- 34:26SPEAKER_07: Then it was a snowball effect.
- 34:27SPEAKER_07: That 100-person party turned into 150, to 300, to 500, to 1,000, to 6,000, and it it's all focused on this good music.
- 34:39SPEAKER_07: Now, I think what I did that that uh actually took it to another level is I never did it for the money.
- 34:45SPEAKER_07: I did it strictly for the feeling and for the people.
- 34:48SPEAKER_07: But I started making so much money, I was like, how can I put this money back into the event?
- 34:53SPEAKER_07: So I was like, you know what I'm gonna do?
- 34:55SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna reach out to an artist.
- 34:57SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna pay an artist some money.
- 34:59SPEAKER_07: I'm not gonna say that they're there.
- 35:00SPEAKER_07: I'm gonna be DJing, I'm gonna play the song, and they'll just walk out on a on a stage and start performing.
- 35:06SPEAKER_07: And that took the ordinance to a whole nother level because now you've you've inserted the um the element of surprise.
- 35:14SPEAKER_07: People don't know who's gonna be there, who's gonna walk out.
- 35:17SPEAKER_07: And um, we've bought everybody from um Biz Marquee, Rest in Peace, um the Yin Yang twins, MC Light, Big Daddy Kane, Rick Ross, Red Man and Method Man.
- 35:28SPEAKER_07: Um and this is you know, it's it's it's just it's just been a dope journey.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: Fire.
- 35:32SPEAKER_04: That that th those artists were unannounced, they would just pop up, or they're never announced, bro.
- 35:36SPEAKER_04: Yeah, never announced.
- 35:37SPEAKER_07: The only ones that were announced um was uh Rick Ross and uh Rare Man and Method Man because they cost too much money.
- 35:44SPEAKER_06: So uh but everybody else uh Master P.
- 35:48SPEAKER_07: You know, and I think one of the dope things for me is like my wife's favorite artist when I met her was Master P.
- 35:54SPEAKER_07: So to be able to create that moment for the crowd, but also my wife gets to meet one of her favorite artists.
- 36:03SPEAKER_07: She was a huge Method Man fan, so to be able to get her that picture with Method Man, all that stuff, you know, meant the world to me.
- 36:10SPEAKER_01: So and um and Aaliyah, real quick, so like obviously you you come from DJ Hip Hop Royalty, and then I know you mentioned before, you know, this person was doing this, this person was doing that.
- 36:21SPEAKER_01: Uh uh.
- 36:22SPEAKER_01: Is there ever or has there been or is there is right now any pressure?
- 36:25SPEAKER_01: Like, my dad is this person.
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 36:28SPEAKER_01: Is you know what I mean?
- 36:29SPEAKER_01: Like, is there any pressure to be like that, or even not even be like that, but at like follow and then you know, do your own thing?
- 36:35SPEAKER_00: Like, I mean, ultimately, like my goal is to be better than him.
- 36:39SPEAKER_00: Like, he's my biggest hater when it comes to all this monetary.
- 36:43SPEAKER_00: I just want to be better than him, truthfully.
- 36:46SPEAKER_00: And yeah.
- 36:47SPEAKER_00: And it's like, I'm I'm not gonna lie, like when I was a kid, I didn't realize how big my dad was.
- 36:52SPEAKER_00: So it's like, you know, he always used to pose on social media and all that.
- 36:54SPEAKER_00: And as people come up to me, oh Leah, da da da, I'm just like, hey, like, you know, I didn't really know how to work it or what that was, but like I I still I feel like still to this day, like I really don't realize how big my dad is because I grew up with him in my house.
- 37:07SPEAKER_01: So he was like, yeah, he just be in there playing music, whatever.
- 37:12SPEAKER_07: But I got there's a there's a actually a news story that she said this exact same thing that, you know, right now everybody knows her as Lonnie B's daughter, but soon there they will know me as Aliah the DJ's dad.
- 37:27SPEAKER_07: I had I was in Baltimore about two or three weeks ago, and she goes to Virginia State, and there was a guy with a Virginia State jersey on, and I mentioned my daughter.
- 37:35SPEAKER_07: He had no idea who I was, didn't care, but he knew who she was.
- 37:39SPEAKER_07: So that was a full circle moment.
- 37:41SPEAKER_05: Nah, dope.
- 37:43SPEAKER_07: I gotta take that.
- 37:44SPEAKER_07: Um the cleanest, one of the cleanest mixers I've ever heard, you know what I'm saying?
- 37:50SPEAKER_07: Um, too much so I feel the pressure.
- 37:52SPEAKER_07: I think when I'm doing a mix, one time she hit me up and say, Hey dad, was you doing a mix today at five?
- 37:56SPEAKER_07: And I'm scared to answer because I don't know if I did something good or bad.
- 38:01SPEAKER_07: But she's really that good though, for sure.
- 38:03SPEAKER_07: I'm not even just saying it, you know, beautiful, man.
- 38:07SPEAKER_01: Well, that's a testament to you, Lonnie.
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 38:09SPEAKER_01: 100%.
- 38:10SPEAKER_07: I appreciate that, man.
- 38:12SPEAKER_01: So enough, enough.
- 38:13SPEAKER_01: Like, obviously, you you have your own story with with your offspring or whatnot.
- 38:18SPEAKER_01: When you see this, when you see this happening here, man, I know you're proud.
- 38:23SPEAKER_03: I was driving with my son in the city the other day, and I was driving, and some kid was like, Yeah, we're enough.
- 38:29SPEAKER_03: He was like, Brooklyn, baby.
- 38:31SPEAKER_03: And then we went to Lowy Side where my parents, you know, were from.
- 38:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're not.
- 38:37SPEAKER_03: Like it just didn't stop.
- 38:38SPEAKER_03: So then my son goes to me, yo, Pop, yo, okay, Pop, you really hot out here.
- 38:44SPEAKER_03: So for him, for me to get that from him meant everything.
- 38:47SPEAKER_03: I was like, wow, that's everything.
- 38:49SPEAKER_03: Because my son's on fire right now.
- 38:50SPEAKER_03: That meant that meant everything to me.
- 38:51SPEAKER_01: No, and I love that because speaking to Yvette uh early in the week, like, and this is dope to me, because you know, I'm a parent too, and obviously whatever, but like we really are building a legacy here.
- 39:01SPEAKER_01: And I I don't think anybody thought this was the plan that any of us would be around this long to be like, yo, here's the baton, Aliyah.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 39:08SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna just fall back and I'm gonna become, you know, yeah, I'm gonna lead a DJ's dad, bro.
- 39:13SPEAKER_01: Like, that's who I am.
- 39:14SPEAKER_01: And I'm, you know, like I'm Riot's dad, and I'm at the Grammys with him, but I'm his dad, and I'm here because this kid is killing it.
- 39:21SPEAKER_01: And this was never the plan, but I'm gonna be real with you, man.
- 39:24SPEAKER_01: As a parent, I think moving forward, this ain't bad the way we're doing it.
- 39:28SPEAKER_03: No, I think we're doing a great job, gentlemen.
- 39:30SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: Like, we've built this.
- 39:31SPEAKER_01: And even Camillo, even though his son is gonna have 90 restaurants.
- 39:36SPEAKER_01: That's what it is.
- 39:37SPEAKER_01: That and Camill hasn't gotten yet.
- 39:39SPEAKER_01: So Camillo's like, why don't you play music?
- 39:41SPEAKER_01: He's like, Pop, I took the business side of your brain.
- 39:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: But but even that, Camillo, that's the legacy, right?
- 39:46SPEAKER_03: He's young still.
- 39:47SPEAKER_03: It's gonna happen.
- 39:47SPEAKER_04: No, I'm not, I'm not sleeping at all.
- 39:49SPEAKER_04: And and like I support whatever he wants to do.
- 39:51SPEAKER_04: Just it happens to be that he never wanted to be a DJ.
- 39:54SPEAKER_04: I never pushed it on him.
- 39:55SPEAKER_04: I never pressed him.
- 39:56SPEAKER_04: I never said, I did say, yo, you don't want to try this?
- 39:58SPEAKER_04: And he tried it.
- 39:59SPEAKER_04: Ah, we kid around, we got a little video, but that was about that was it started there and it ended there.
- 40:03SPEAKER_04: And I never said, yo, you know, why don't you I let it be?
- 40:06SPEAKER_04: But you know what?
- 40:07SPEAKER_03: Who's to say it won't be your daughter?
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 40:10SPEAKER_03: Maybe Catalina do it.
- 40:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yo, you never know, bro.
- 40:15SPEAKER_03: I'll be there and ready.
- 40:17SPEAKER_01: If not, we'll become a look.
- 40:19SPEAKER_01: My son graduated from Syracuse with a communications degree, you know what I'm saying?
- 40:23SPEAKER_01: And like I really was like, yo, this kid's on, he's doing the interviews on campus.
- 40:26SPEAKER_01: He was doing da-da-da-da-da-da.
- 40:28SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, what?
- 40:29SPEAKER_01: Like, he didn't tell me nothing, bro.
- 40:31SPEAKER_01: People had to tell me, like, damn, your son was on the news and he was a guest, blah, blah, blah, for entertainment.
- 40:36SPEAKER_01: And then I'm looking at him like, Phil.
- 40:39SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 40:40SPEAKER_01: And I'm like, why you holding this information out on me?
- 40:42SPEAKER_01: But I love that because without you, without us knowing, man, they watching, yo.
- 40:46SPEAKER_01: They watching.
- 40:47SPEAKER_01: I know Aaliyah was watching the whole time, and she was stealing all her dad's magic while she was watching.
- 40:52SPEAKER_04: Oh, I got a question for Aaliyah.
- 40:54SPEAKER_04: Like, okay, so you know, you growing up around your dad and listening to all this music.
- 41:00SPEAKER_04: What do you think of like, let's say, the 90s era?
- 41:03SPEAKER_04: And you're, you know, in your like the gang stars and everything with tribe corquest and all that.
- 41:07SPEAKER_04: Do you do you love it?
- 41:08SPEAKER_04: Or or is this like oh head music to you?
- 41:11SPEAKER_00: Like personally, I feel like as a DJ, I love it.
- 41:14SPEAKER_00: Like, I love all music.
- 41:15SPEAKER_00: Like, me and my dad, we was listening to 80s pop.
- 41:17SPEAKER_00: Like, we we really get into the music stuff.
- 41:20SPEAKER_00: So I like uh I like 90s RB, 90s hip hop.
- 41:24SPEAKER_00: Well, let me say.
- 41:26SPEAKER_00: Um, right.
- 41:29SPEAKER_00: I want to know and the reason I'm asking.
- 41:33SPEAKER_04: The reason I'm asking is because if I'm in the car and I want to play my shit and play, I don't know, OC, right?
- 41:39SPEAKER_04: My son is like, oh, that's old head music.
- 41:41SPEAKER_04: Right, like right away off the rip.
- 41:43SPEAKER_04: And I'm making him hear like shit that I like.
- 41:45SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 41:46SPEAKER_04: So, you know, I'm just curious.
- 41:48SPEAKER_04: You're it you're you're a little different because you're a DJ.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 41:50SPEAKER_04: You know what I'm saying?
- 41:51SPEAKER_04: So I'm just curious.
- 41:52SPEAKER_04: So go ahead.
- 41:53SPEAKER_00: Like personally, like, I don't mean any hate.
- 41:55SPEAKER_00: I'm not the biggest fan of Boom Bap.
- 41:57SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm not like I I don't like my dad loves it, but I I don't really like it.
- 42:02SPEAKER_04: It doesn't hit you.
- 42:04SPEAKER_04: It doesn't hit you.
- 42:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I understand that.
- 42:06SPEAKER_04: I get that.
- 42:07SPEAKER_04: I understand that I had an aspect.
- 42:08SPEAKER_04: Ain't nothing wrong with that, baby.
- 42:09SPEAKER_04: No, nothing wrong with that.
- 42:11SPEAKER_04: Ain't nothing wrong with that.
- 42:12SPEAKER_00: But I feel like the oldest artist I've probably listened to is uh is El DeBarge, right?
- 42:20SPEAKER_05: Elder Barge.
- 42:21SPEAKER_05: El D Barge, yeah.
- 42:22SPEAKER_00: That's probably the only one.
- 42:23SPEAKER_02: Well see, with that, what with that type of thing, I always I always look at the younger generation to shoot them bail on it because you gotta understand, right?
- 42:30SPEAKER_02: Hip hop, like we don't look at it like that sometimes because we're in it and you know we kind of been moving around and we know it's supposed to be what.
- 42:37SPEAKER_02: But hip hop is like, bro, 50 years of old, 50 years of music, right?
- 42:42SPEAKER_02: So now if you think back, if you think back when you were a younger kid and you look back, like the beginning of hip-hop is closer to Frank Sinatra being popping than what the beginning of hip-hop to now is, if you really think about it, right?
- 42:55SPEAKER_02: So you're like, yo, when I was a kid, were you bumping Frank Sinatra in the whip?
- 42:59SPEAKER_02: When your parents used to throw that, throw that old Frank Sinatra on that Sammy Davis Jr., that whatever, you'd be like, ah, I want to hear that, you know what I'm saying?
- 43:05SPEAKER_02: I want to hear that.
- 43:06SPEAKER_02: So I get it when when kids nowadays go like, ah, it doesn't sound, it's not it, it's not whatever.
- 43:11SPEAKER_02: It's because it's not their music.
- 43:15SPEAKER_02: It's bro, it's a song that's facts 30 years old, right?
- 43:19SPEAKER_02: When you think about the if you if you go back to 1970, like you go back to 1985, you're talking about a song that came out of 1955, right?
- 43:27SPEAKER_02: So put that in perspective when you gotta so sometimes when people go hard on the younger kids, like, ah, y'all don't know about this, y'all don't know about that.
- 43:33SPEAKER_02: I'm like, they're not supposed to.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: Right.
- 43:35SPEAKER_04: But I want I want to want to I want to flip the coin now and ask Lonnie B. 'cause when I'm driving with my son and he wants to hear NBA Youngboy, and like I have to play NBA Youngboy, but do I love it?
- 43:48SPEAKER_04: Do I get I'm like, yo, really?
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: What is he saying?
- 43:51SPEAKER_04: I'm talking turning around to JQ.
- 43:54SPEAKER_04: What is what is um um Carson?
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: What's this guy?
- 43:56SPEAKER_04: Ken Carson?
- 43:57SPEAKER_04: That's Carson.
- 43:58SPEAKER_04: Ken Carson.
- 43:59SPEAKER_04: My son loves playing.
- 44:00SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 44:00SPEAKER_00: Playboy.
- 44:01SPEAKER_00: He loves King Carson.
- 44:02SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 44:03SPEAKER_04: And I'm like, I'm like, okay, this is distorted.
- 44:06SPEAKER_04: It sounds nuts to me, but he's like, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:10SPEAKER_04: So Lonnie B, like, what do you, like, you know, what do you think?
- 44:13SPEAKER_04: Like.
- 44:14SPEAKER_07: So as far as a lot of that stuff, man, I listen to what I gotta learn, what I gotta know as far as radio.
- 44:19SPEAKER_07: But outside of that, like, she'll play some records, like she, like Chen Carson and all this stuff.
- 44:24SPEAKER_07: I'll be like, if I don't have to know it, I'm good on it.
- 44:27SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 44:28SPEAKER_07: Like, I NBA Youngboy, you know, I I listen to a lot of his stuff.
- 44:32SPEAKER_07: I love his story to watch how he's popping and understanding that the music that he's making is not for me.
- 44:38SPEAKER_07: But when I watch, like my son, I have a nine-year-old son that, you know, loves NBA Youngboy.
- 44:44SPEAKER_07: I have to make sure I'm monitoring the versions that he's listening to.
- 44:47SPEAKER_07: But, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:48SPEAKER_07: I love the fact that he he's really into it.
- 44:50SPEAKER_07: Um and always tell people, man, certain hip-hop is not for like some of the newest stuff is not being made for me.
- 44:58SPEAKER_07: Just like OC.
- 44:59SPEAKER_07: OC Times Up is one of my favorite songs in the whole world.
- 45:03SPEAKER_07: You know, rather be broken.
- 45:06SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 45:07SPEAKER_07: But Aliyah wouldn't even know or care about that record.
- 45:10SPEAKER_07: Don't even need it at her computer, more than likely.
- 45:12SPEAKER_07: You know what I'm saying?
- 45:12SPEAKER_04: Right, correct.
- 45:13SPEAKER_04: And I respect all of that.
- 45:14SPEAKER_04: It's like, listen, I did I did Live Night Club uh like a month ago, four weeks ago, and you know, I had to play the NBA Young Boys, and when I played it, the crowd going crazy.
- 45:26SPEAKER_04: So then I get to understand it a little bit because I'm just there.
- 45:30SPEAKER_04: You know, and I get I get to see the reaction, then then I I get to get it.
- 45:33SPEAKER_04: Like I get it.
- 45:34SPEAKER_04: I don't love it, but I get it now.
- 45:36SPEAKER_04: And sometimes I'll be like, you know what?
- 45:37SPEAKER_04: I could fuck with this record.
- 45:39SPEAKER_04: Like, I could, you know.
- 45:40SPEAKER_01: But the way the way Lonnie, the way Lonnie gets tired of it is a safe way.
- 45:44SPEAKER_01: Because I agree with you, Lonnie.
- 45:45SPEAKER_01: Sometimes my kids play that tight, and I just be like, yeah, that ain't for me.
- 45:48SPEAKER_01: Like I literally bounce out of the conversation.
- 45:50SPEAKER_01: I'm like, yeah, they're not talking to me at all.
- 45:52SPEAKER_01: Like, this ain't for me.
- 45:53SPEAKER_01: So that's why I fall back on the I'm not gonna hate on it because it has nothing to do with me.
- 45:57SPEAKER_01: I still want the story, I still want you to paint a picture for me and rap.
- 46:01SPEAKER_01: You know what I'm saying?
- 46:02SPEAKER_01: So I understand that.
- 46:04SPEAKER_03: For me, it's different.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: My son forces me to play the old school in the car.
- 46:08SPEAKER_03: He's like, Dad, play your shit.
- 46:10SPEAKER_03: I'm like, Why?
- 46:11SPEAKER_03: He goes, Because you give me ideas.
- 46:12SPEAKER_04: I was like, he's a producer.
- 46:15SPEAKER_04: He's a producer, and and he's he's it's in the bloody.
- 46:20SPEAKER_04: And he's a producer, and he's like, that's beautiful, bro.
- 46:23SPEAKER_04: He's creating a big thing.
- 46:24SPEAKER_03: Yo, my son came off for flight yesterday from LA, came to my crib.
- 46:29SPEAKER_03: I literally saw two things on YouTube.
- 46:31SPEAKER_03: The new Spider-Man trailer with him because he wanted to see that.
- 46:35SPEAKER_03: And then we went down a rabbit hole because we were watching a video on how house music was born.
- 46:42SPEAKER_03: And he said, Dad, what is that?
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: I said, That's the Rolling 909.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: He goes, That machine came out after the 808.
- 46:48SPEAKER_03: The same the same guys who created the 808 made the 909.
- 46:51SPEAKER_03: He goes, But what is that?
- 46:52SPEAKER_03: The drum machine?
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: I said, That's a drum machine, bro.
- 46:54SPEAKER_03: That's how music was being that's how music was being made.
- 46:57SPEAKER_03: So now he wants to go home and look into the 909 and make he said he wants to do a whole dance record with the 909 as classic.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: So it's little it's little things like that, how you'd be surprised how gems are dropped, and then they go on and make their own versions of what it is that they think it's it's hot.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: That's it.
- 47:13SPEAKER_03: And you know what?
- 47:15SPEAKER_03: If you hear any dance shit in the future from Riot, it might be from that night.
- 47:19SPEAKER_04: That that's hip hop, man.
- 47:21SPEAKER_04: And it's it's crazy we've been talking about this because yesterday I learned that um Ultra Magnetic MCs, uh, I whoever the producer was, I don't know his name, he was the first one to s to fuck around with the SP.
- 47:33SPEAKER_04: Um I saying that right, the sampler?
- 47:35SPEAKER_04: Yeah, 1200.
- 47:36SPEAKER_04: Right, and I was reading the whole story and I was like, oh snap.
- 47:40SPEAKER_04: And he was the first one after him.
- 47:41SPEAKER_04: I guess Pete Rock and everybody else, uh uh premiere, they started learning the SP because it's just hip hop, bro.
- 47:49SPEAKER_04: What was the producer's name?
- 47:50SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 47:51SPEAKER_04: He was from Ultra Magnetic MCs.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: I forgot his name.
- 47:53SPEAKER_04: I don't know if it was Cookie.
- 47:54SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
- 47:55SPEAKER_04: I don't know his name.
- 47:56SPEAKER_04: Cool Keith, maybe?
- 47:57SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't think it was the.
- 47:58SPEAKER_04: Cool Keith's the rapper.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: Right, right.
- 47:59SPEAKER_04: I I forgot.
- 48:00SPEAKER_04: Anyway, my point is that's how hip hop evolution.
- 48:05SPEAKER_04: Like that's how you know.
- 48:07SPEAKER_01: And then and then Aaliyah, you know that this uh I like what Camilla brought up.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: This is part of it.
- 48:10SPEAKER_01: You borrow, you borrow, you take it, and you make it your own.
- 48:13SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna age myself.
- 48:14SPEAKER_01: Is your age group still doing that?
- 48:16SPEAKER_01: Like looking at us old heads and realizing, give me this, give me that, but I'm gonna do my own thing with it.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Because obviously you're doing that too.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Because you said you want to jump into that, you want to jump into the whole production bag, et cetera, et cetera.
- 48:28SPEAKER_00: Yeah, nah.
- 48:29SPEAKER_00: Um, there's a lot of artists now, like especially with uh DV Trap, and uh, it's an artist in the underground whose name is Nar Vicious.
- 48:36SPEAKER_00: Like, they'll take samples and they'll mix it.
- 48:38SPEAKER_00: So I'll be like, dang, but they say samples like Rihanna, what's my name?
- 48:42SPEAKER_00: And I'm just like, dang, that was just like 2010.
- 48:44SPEAKER_00: So it's like, it's kind of like a full circle moment for me.
- 48:47SPEAKER_00: But what I can say for y'all's generation and stuff, like, I appreciate that your crowd like actually enjoys music.
- 48:54SPEAKER_00: Like, y'all can play music for a minute and they'll dance the whole time.
- 48:58SPEAKER_00: Now I feel like with TikTok, with my generation, especially like the college crowd, like I gotta play a song for 15 seconds and I gotta get out of it.
- 49:04SPEAKER_00: Cause once it's that 30-second mark, it's like they they all stand still.
- 49:08SPEAKER_00: But I feel like in that moment, like I could just tell like who truly appreciates music and who's just here just for the vibe and just for like you know, a good time.
- 49:16SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 49:16SPEAKER_04: I blame that on.
- 49:17SPEAKER_04: I blame that on.
- 49:18SPEAKER_04: It's like scrolling, man.
- 49:19SPEAKER_04: It's like scrolling to Instagram or TikTok.
- 49:21SPEAKER_04: You like this.
- 49:22SPEAKER_04: So these kids nowadays they like what you said, you gotta play the record to 10 50.
- 49:26SPEAKER_04: I catch myself all the time playing a song for 10 20 seconds off to the next.
- 49:30SPEAKER_04: Even if I'm cutting the fucking verse off, yeah.
- 49:34SPEAKER_04: You have to just get to the moment uh uh and be on to the next.
- 49:38SPEAKER_04: And and I mean and I blame that on this.
- 49:41SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 49:43SPEAKER_02: You gotta hit that pop it up that popular part and move on.
- 49:46SPEAKER_02: Bounce.
- 49:46SPEAKER_00: I hate that.
- 49:47SPEAKER_00: Like, I I really hate that because at some point music, like it's just like I will listen to a full song, I still listen to full albums, everything, but my I don't even think I don't even know if they listen to albums more unless it's their favorite artists, but it's just you know what?
- 50:00SPEAKER_04: I couldn't I nowadays I look at it as a style of DJing.
- 50:04SPEAKER_04: I really do.
- 50:05SPEAKER_04: And and some sometimes I see these young kids killing the crowd, doing just that, 10 seconds, 50 seconds, talking shit, stopping a music and on to the next.
- 50:13SPEAKER_01: And it's just I I look at them like this is just a style, like this is another style that's coming up, and I don't know, you know, but not everybody's scratching, not every not everybody's scratching, not everybody's grinding, not everybody's nobody's scratching no more.
- 50:25SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 50:26SPEAKER_02: Nah, yo, you just slamming the records, bro.
- 50:28SPEAKER_02: Slam the record, or I'm gonna talk the records.
- 50:31SPEAKER_02: That's it.
- 50:32SPEAKER_01: That's it.
- 50:33SPEAKER_01: Aaliyah, what's next?
- 50:34SPEAKER_01: What's on the plate besides becoming a doctor and all?
- 50:36SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna keep running with this because it's gonna happen.
- 50:38SPEAKER_00: Again, just getting back into my content stuff, you know, with school, like I've had a lot going on, but like with me getting ready to graduate, I'm ready.
- 50:45SPEAKER_00: Flood, Instagram, YouTube, mixes, so that's really good.
- 50:49SPEAKER_04: Are you are do you do the Twitch thing?
- 50:52SPEAKER_04: Do you do the I don't do Twitch?
- 50:54SPEAKER_00: I'm I for some reason I can't log into my Twitch account.
- 50:57SPEAKER_00: I had one like back in the day, like when Kasi.
- 50:59SPEAKER_00: Kaz, Kaz.
- 51:00SPEAKER_01: You gotta talk to Kaz.
- 51:01SPEAKER_01: He's heavy on me.
- 51:02SPEAKER_00: Oh, no, no, no.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
- 51:04SPEAKER_00: I did just do TikTok live though.
- 51:07SPEAKER_00: And I had like about a hundred viewers on there, like in and out.
- 51:10SPEAKER_00: But nah, what do y'all think is better?
- 51:12SPEAKER_00: TikTok or uh Twitch?
- 51:14SPEAKER_04: I think I think right I think it's two different things.
- 51:17SPEAKER_04: I think TikTok, I think Twitch is bigger, but I think TikTok is like everybody's more people, there's more people on there.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: Right.
- 51:25SPEAKER_02: You know what I'm saying?
- 51:26SPEAKER_02: And and TikTok will put you in front of an audience quicker.
- 51:28SPEAKER_02: Like, you know what I'm saying?
- 51:29SPEAKER_02: Like you you could build your audience on TikTok and then transfer that audience to Twitch.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: Because it's hard to get an audience on Twitch alone.
- 51:36SPEAKER_02: Like to start on Twitch and get an audience on Twitch is difficult.
- 51:38SPEAKER_02: But if you bring in your audience, if you if you're able to port your audience from a place where everybody is, like everybody's on TikTok, everybody's on Instagram, you know what I'm saying?
- 51:47SPEAKER_02: And you could take that and you could port that audience, the people that mess with you, you could bring them to YouTube, you could bring them to Twitch.
- 51:53SPEAKER_02: I'm saying, but to start on Twitch is a little is a little bit more difficult.
- 51:57SPEAKER_04: I saw Cash One, I saw Cash One get on on TikTok when he was live on the radio, and I said, I'm gonna try that.
- 52:03SPEAKER_04: And I started doing it.
- 52:04SPEAKER_04: I started doing it, and I I you know I went for an hour straight.
- 52:07SPEAKER_04: So I kind of hated it because I'm on radio live.
- 52:10SPEAKER_04: So I'm playing radio, clean cuts, I'm sticking by the rules, I can't be myself.
- 52:15SPEAKER_04: But people stood there, people didn't leave, and I was okay.
- 52:19SPEAKER_04: And after I was done with radio, I kept going, you know?
- 52:21SPEAKER_04: And then I started being myself and started to write.
- 52:24SPEAKER_04: I started talking shit.
- 52:24SPEAKER_04: I kept off radio.
- 52:25SPEAKER_04: What do you want to hear?
- 52:27SPEAKER_04: Anyway, when I was done with the mix, I look at my account, oh shit,$150 I made.
- 52:34SPEAKER_01: That was beautiful, bro.
- 52:35SPEAKER_01: Like, you know?
- 52:37SPEAKER_01: And Lonnie, besides being a proud parent, because every time Malia talks, your faces light up.
- 52:42SPEAKER_01: Besides being a proud parent, what's on the Lani B table moving forward, man?
- 52:47SPEAKER_07: Um, right now I just relaunched my um DJ Lonnie B app.
- 52:50SPEAKER_07: So um, between my app and my brand, my logo, um, really just trying to figure out how to um get involved with more lifestyle things.
- 52:59SPEAKER_07: Um I I also with the events and the music, like like you were just talking about the TikTok and how Ali and them, they might play the records for 10, 15 seconds or whatever.
- 53:09SPEAKER_07: To me, there's still an audience of people that want to hear the music that we grew up to.
- 53:13SPEAKER_07: And I think a lot of people are focused more on how do I remain relevant in this 15-second space versus catering to the people that were there.
- 53:22SPEAKER_07: So, you know, I I want to get more into doing events.
- 53:25SPEAKER_07: Um, I have this concept for this event that I want to do called Forever Young.
- 53:29SPEAKER_07: And um I want to be able to create an uh an event where my mom, my aunts, my uncles, or a lot of the older people can come out and I'm gonna play the music that they grew up to, that I was a kid, remember that I remember listening to them listening to, and just create an atmosphere where they feel young again.
- 53:47SPEAKER_07: Because outside of it, if no one does that, you know, I don't know if they'll ever get that feeling again.
- 53:52SPEAKER_07: So just, you know, things like that and things to bring the city together, you know what I'm saying?
- 53:56SPEAKER_07: And just kind of embrace the era of being an OG and uh, you know, big dog at this point.
- 54:02SPEAKER_04: Download the DJ Lonnie B app, baby.
- 54:05SPEAKER_04: Yeah, download right now.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 54:07SPEAKER_01: There you go.
- 54:08SPEAKER_01: Aaliyah, you know what it is.
- 54:09SPEAKER_01: We got you all the way.
- 54:10SPEAKER_01: So, and appreciate you uh you stopping by, and of course, Lonnie B.
- 54:14SPEAKER_01: Uh me, I don't know about y'all three, but I always love seeing Lonnie B.
- 54:19SPEAKER_01: Love seeing them, y'all.
- 54:20SPEAKER_01: We we love seeing you, Lonnie and Aaliyah, what you're doing over there.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: We love seeing it.
- 54:24SPEAKER_01: Like, we're we're just well me, we're just sitting back and watching everything, you know, do what it's like.
- 54:29SPEAKER_01: One more thing.
- 54:29SPEAKER_04: Let me add one more thing.
- 54:31SPEAKER_04: Lonnie B is one of the pre one of the heavy hitter DJs that always shows up to the retreat, man.
- 54:38SPEAKER_04: And I always I always see that.
- 54:39SPEAKER_04: The date that he won't show up, I'd be like, that guy's been here, done that a million times.
- 54:44SPEAKER_04: Like, you know, like this was the this was the first past year, was the first time I didn't show up because my dad ended up in a hospital.
- 54:52SPEAKER_04: But um, you know, just to just to see Lonnie be in the retreats, man, makes me happy all the time.
- 54:56SPEAKER_07: Like, I've only I don't I think I've only missed one since 2004, 2004, 2004.
- 55:02SPEAKER_07: I don't even, I don't even, you know, to me though, it's a tissue poppy.
- 55:06SPEAKER_03: We'll see you soon in the next one.
- 55:07SPEAKER_07: Bye.
- 55:08SPEAKER_07: Also, real I didn't say anything about that.
- 55:13SPEAKER_07: I didn't say it, bro.
- 55:14SPEAKER_07: I'm on a radio um in Richmond, Virginia.
- 55:16SPEAKER_07: I'm on a radio in Raleigh, North Carolina, I'm on a radio in Charlotte, North Carolina, Houston, Texas, Ohio, and Washington, D.C.
- 55:26SPEAKER_03: Let's go.
- 55:27SPEAKER_07: And that's all self-syndication.
- 55:29SPEAKER_07: It was all based on relationships and um working for PDs that went to you know other markets.
- 55:35SPEAKER_07: So um shout out to everybody in all those different markets.
- 55:38SPEAKER_07: That's right.
- 55:39SPEAKER_04: They trust you.
- 55:40SPEAKER_04: You got that knowledge, you sound good, and boom, that's how you get a job in another another city.
- 55:44SPEAKER_04: Just like that.
- 55:45SPEAKER_04: Facts.
- 55:46SPEAKER_02: Make sure you log into the DJ Lonnie B.com website.
- 55:49SPEAKER_02: I'm there right now.
- 55:50SPEAKER_02: I'm about I'm trying to get that hat he has on.
