- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is a new week.
- 0:14It's Monday, it's the 25th of November.
- 0:17And boy am I glad that you have decided to stop what's going on
- 0:22in your day, just for a moment to invite me in so that we can
- 0:25do what we do, read another chapter of God's Word together.
- 0:29And this, this is an awesome chapter.
- 0:31This is a chapter where we don't just hear a summary of, of one
- 0:35of the speeches that Paul gives, but it goes through word for
- 0:38word and shares his entire speech.
- 0:41And that is because the author here is really trying to share
- 0:45this very specific message, the message that Paul is going to be
- 0:49preaching here in in Antioch of Presidia.
- 0:53This is not about the law. This is not about the way that
- 0:56it's always been, but this is about promise.
- 0:59This is about what God is doing and God has promised to do and
- 1:03God is fulfilling through Jesus. So this, this is a paradigm
- 1:09shift. It might not sound like it if if
- 1:11we're not listening for it, but this is a moment where Luke says
- 1:16the old rules don't apply anymore.
- 1:18We are now entering into a new phase where the law is replaced
- 1:22by the fulfilment of this promise from God.
- 1:25So with that lens on, let us hear what he says as that
- 1:29applies back then to that audience all the way forward,
- 1:34through time, to us in our lives right now.
- 1:37Hello, Exciting. Let's read it together.
- 1:39You ready? Yeah, me too.
- 1:41All right. Let's read together.
- 1:42Acts chapter 13. Among the prophets and teachers
- 1:55of the church in Antioch of Syria were Barnabas, Simeon
- 2:00called the black man, Lucius from Cyrene, Manayan, the
- 2:05childhood companion of King Herod, Antipas and Saul.
- 2:09One day, as these men were worshipping the Lord and
- 2:12fasting, the Holy Spirit said, Appoint Barnabas and Saul for
- 2:16the special work to which I have called them.
- 2:20So after more fasting and prayer, the men laid their hands
- 2:23on them and sent them on their way.
- 2:25So Barnabas and Saul were sent out by the Holy Spirit.
- 2:29They went down to the seaport of Seleucia and then sailed for the
- 2:33island of Cyprus. There in the town of Salamis,
- 2:37they went to the Jewish synagogues and preached the word
- 2:39of God. John Mark went with them as
- 2:42their assistant. Afterward they travelled from
- 2:45town to town across the entire island, until finally they reach
- 2:50Paphos, where they met a Jewish sorcerer, a false prophet named
- 2:54BA Jesus. He had attached himself to the
- 2:57governor Sergius Paulus, who was an intelligent man.
- 3:01The governor invited Barnabas and Saul to visit him for he
- 3:04wanted to hear the word of God. But Ellamus the sorcerer, as his
- 3:09name means in Greek, interfered and urged the governor to pay no
- 3:13attention to what Barnabas and Saul said.
- 3:15He was trying to keep the governor from believing.
- 3:18Saul, also known as Paul, was filled with the Holy Spirit and
- 3:23he looked the sorcerer in the eye.
- 3:25Then he said, You son of the devil, full of every sort of
- 3:29deceit and fraud and enemy of all that is good, will you never
- 3:34stop perverting the true ways of the Lord?
- 3:37Watch now, for the Lord has laid his hand of punishment upon you,
- 3:41and you will be struck blind. You will not see the sunlight
- 3:45for some time. Instantly mist and darkness came
- 3:49over the man's eyes, and he began groping around, begging
- 3:53for someone to take his hand and lead him.
- 3:56When the governor saw what had happened, he became a believer,
- 4:00for he was astonished at the teaching about the Lord.
- 4:04Paul and his companions then left Paphos by ship for
- 4:08Pamphylia, landing at the port down of Perga.
- 4:11There John Mark left them and returned to Jerusalem, but Paul
- 4:15and Barnabas travelled inland to Antioch of Presidia.
- 4:19On the Sabbath they went to the synagogue for the services.
- 4:23After the usual reading from the books of Moses and the prophets,
- 4:27those in charge of the service sent them this message.
- 4:30Brothers, if you have any word of encouragement for the people,
- 4:34come and give it. So Paul stood, lifted his hand
- 4:38to quiet them, and started speaking.
- 4:41Men of Israel, he said, And you, God fearing Gentiles, listen to
- 4:46me. The God of this nation of Israel
- 4:49chose our ancestors and made them multiply and grow strong
- 4:54during their stay in Egypt. Then with a powerful arm, he led
- 4:58them out of their slavery. He put up with them through 40
- 5:02years of wandering in the wilderness.
- 5:05Then he destroyed seven nations in Canaan and gave their land to
- 5:09Israel as an inheritance. All this took about 450 years.
- 5:15After that God gave them judges to rule, until the time of
- 5:18Samuel the prophet. Then the people begged for a
- 5:21king and God gave them Saul son of Kish, a man of the tribe of
- 5:26Benjamin, who reigned for 40 years.
- 5:29That God removed Saul and replaced him with David, a man
- 5:33about whom God said, I have found David's son of Jesse, a
- 5:38man after my own heart. He will do everything I want him
- 5:42to do. And it is one of King David's
- 5:45descendants, Jesus, who is God's promised Saviour of Israel.
- 5:51Before he came, John the Baptist preached that all the people of
- 5:54Israel needed to repent of their sins and turn to God and be
- 5:58baptised. As John was finishing his
- 6:00ministry he asked, do you think I am the Messiah?
- 6:04No I am not, but he is coming soon and I'm not even worthy to
- 6:09be his slave and untie the sandals on his feet.
- 6:13Brothers, you sons of Abraham and also you God fearing
- 6:17Gentiles, this message of salvation has been sent to us.
- 6:22The people in Jerusalem and their leaders did not recognise
- 6:25Jesus as the one the prophets had spoken about.
- 6:29Instead they condemned him, and in doing this they fulfilled the
- 6:32prophet's words that are read every Sabbath.
- 6:36They found no legal reason to execute him, but they asked
- 6:39Pilate to have him killed anyway.
- 6:42When they had done all that the prophecies said about him, they
- 6:46took him down from the cross and placed him in a tomb.
- 6:49But God raised him from the dead, and over a period of many
- 6:53days he appeared to those who had gone with him from Galilee
- 6:57to Jerusalem. They are now his witnesses to
- 7:00the people of Israel. And now we are here to bring you
- 7:04this good news. The promise was made to our
- 7:07ancestors, and God has now fulfilled it for us, their
- 7:12descendants, by raising Jesus. This is what the second Psalm
- 7:17says about Jesus. You are my Son today.
- 7:21I have become your father. For God had promised to raise
- 7:25him from the dead, not leaving him to rot in the grave.
- 7:28He said, I will give you the sacred blessings I promised to
- 7:32David. Another Psalm explains it more
- 7:35fully. You will not allow your holy 1
- 7:38to rot in the grave. This is not a reference for
- 7:41David, for after David had done the will of God in his own
- 7:45generation, he died and was buried with his ancestors and
- 7:49his body decayed. No, it was a reference to
- 7:53someone else, someone whom God raised and whose body did not
- 7:57decay. Brothers, listen, we are here to
- 8:00proclaim that through this man Jesus, there is forgiveness for
- 8:05your sins. Everyone who believes in him is
- 8:09made right in God's sight, something the Law of Moses could
- 8:13never do. Be careful, don't let the
- 8:15prophets words apply to you, for they said, look you mockers, be
- 8:20amazed and die, for I am doing something in your day, something
- 8:25you wouldn't believe even if someone told you about it.
- 8:31As Paul and Barnabas left the synagogue that day, the people
- 8:34begged them to speak about these things again.
- 8:36The next week, many Jews and devout converts to Judaism
- 8:40followed Paul and Barnabas, and the two men urged them to
- 8:44continue to rely on the grace of God.
- 8:47The following week, almost the entire city turned out to hear
- 8:51them preach the word of the Lord.
- 8:53But when some of the Jews saw the crowds, they were jealous.
- 8:58So they slanted Paul and argued against whatever he said.
- 9:02Then Paul and Barnabas spoke out boldly and declared it was
- 9:06necessary that we first preach the Word of God to you Jews, But
- 9:11since you have rejected it and judged yourselves unworthy of
- 9:14eternal life, we will offer it to the Gentiles.
- 9:18For the Lord gave us His command when He said, I have made you a
- 9:23light to the Gentiles to bring salvation to the farthest
- 9:27corners of the earth. When the Gentiles heard this,
- 9:31they were very glad and thanked the Lord for His message, and
- 9:35all who were chosen for eternal life became believers.
- 9:38So the Lord's message spread throughout that region.
- 9:42Then the Jews stirred up influential religious women and
- 9:46the leaders of the city, and they incited a mob against Paul
- 9:49and Barnabas and ran them out of town.
- 9:52So they shook the dust from their feet as a sign of
- 9:55rejection and went to the town of Iconium.
- 9:59And the believers were filled with joy and with the Holy
- 10:02Spirit. Ah Lord, what an amazing message
- 10:16that Paul and Barnabas share, and that is your message to us
- 10:20today, that through you there is forgiveness for our sins.
- 10:26Everyone who believes in you is made right in God's sight,
- 10:30something that nothing else and no one else could ever do.
- 10:37Ah, thank you for your love for us, Jesus, that you would go to
- 10:40these lengths to live and to die and to be raised again so that
- 10:47we can be in the presence of the Father and bask in his love and
- 10:54his glory, and that we can be your friends and even more, we
- 10:59can be your family. Oh, thank you for this gift.
- 11:03Help our hearts always cling to this, and when the words of the
- 11:08deceiver try to convince us that it's by any other means that we
- 11:12are saved. Holy Spirit, quiet that voice so
- 11:16that we can hold on to Your truth.
- 11:19For it is nothing that we do or we bring to the table, but it is
- 11:23you and Your gift to us. And thank you for the faith that
- 11:28you place in our heart. You are incredible and we love
- 11:32you and we praise you. We pray all of this in your
- 11:36saving name, Amen.
