Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: The announcement that the President has arrived for the stadium.
- 0:03Speaker 2: The president of the United States.
- 0:51Speaker 3: See what the president has entered the changer. He knows
- 0:54Speaker 3: this moment is a pivotal moment for him. He is saying,
- 0:57Speaker 3: we should point out John took us behind the scenes here.
- 1:00Speaker 3: It is customary for the anchors of the networks, some
- 1:03Speaker 3: of the cable news as so invited to the White
- 1:05Speaker 3: House under the Republican presidents, under Democrat presidents on the
- 1:09Speaker 3: day of the State of the Union.
- 1:10Speaker 1: The President didn't better feed us.
- 1:12Speaker 3: For lunch, and he made it very clear that he
- 1:14Speaker 3: will address.
- 1:15Speaker 1: The economy tonight. Obviously, the polls this White House very.
- 1:20Speaker 3: Aware of his handling of the economy in terms of
- 1:23Speaker 3: the American people that they can look at the stock market,
- 1:27Speaker 3: but they also can look at their grocery bills and
- 1:29Speaker 3: recognize that they're not feeling this quite yet. You can
- 1:33Speaker 3: see the very warm welcome that he's getting from his
- 1:36Speaker 3: Republican colleagues there in the chamber. Let's go right to
- 1:39Speaker 3: Rachel Scott, who's also in the chamber tonight, and Rachel,
- 1:43Speaker 3: what do you make.
- 1:43Speaker 1: Of what you see so far?
- 1:45Speaker 3: And are their empty seats as had been predicted by
- 1:48Speaker 3: many of the Democrats who said they might sit this
- 1:50Speaker 3: one out.
- 1:51Speaker 4: Well, David, I've covered several State of the Unions from
- 1:53Speaker 4: this very seat up here in the gallery in the
- 1:55Speaker 4: House Chamber. There are far fewer Democrats tonight than there
- 1:58Speaker 4: have been in years past. And David, what is notable
- 2:01Speaker 4: right now as I'm watching the president look at this
- 2:04Speaker 4: Al Green, Congressman Al Green holding up a sign. I
- 2:07Speaker 4: believe I'm looking at it right now. It said something
- 2:09Speaker 4: in reference to apes. Black people are not apes, in
- 2:13Speaker 4: reference to that post that the President I had on
- 2:16Speaker 4: his social media account, a racist post that was offensive,
- 2:19Speaker 4: that clearly a sign of protest. There also notable as
- 2:22Speaker 4: the President's making his way down toward the Supreme Court justices,
- 2:25Speaker 4: David is some Democrats didn't even bother to turn around
- 2:28Speaker 4: as the President entered the House Chamber tonight, and Democratic
- 2:32Speaker 4: leadership notably how Keen Jeffries was seated.
- 2:39Speaker 3: We just saw the President obviously shake the Chief Justice's hand.
- 2:42Speaker 3: There is Justice Elena Kagan and Brett Kavanaugh, Amy Cony Barrett.
- 2:47Speaker 3: Of course he chose Amy Cony Barrett for the bench.
- 2:51Speaker 1: She was one of the justices who.
- 2:53Speaker 3: Did not vote in his favor and did not shake
- 2:56Speaker 3: her hand there, did interact with the Chief Justice, then
- 3:00Speaker 3: with none of the other justices, and John carl this
- 3:04Speaker 3: was a question for the President today.
- 3:05Speaker 1: Obviously didn't want to go on.
- 3:06Speaker 3: The record, didn't offer any answer to us, but it
- 3:09Speaker 3: was clear to us at the White House that he
- 3:11Speaker 3: didn't quite know how he was going to handle the
- 3:13Speaker 3: justices when.
- 3:13Speaker 1: He got there tonight.
- 3:14Speaker 2: Yeah, interesting that shake, very quick shake with John Roberts,
- 3:18Speaker 2: and in going right by Amy Connel Barrett, who he
- 3:21Speaker 2: put on the court.
- 3:23Speaker 3: Of course he should point out Chief Justice John Roberts
- 3:26Speaker 3: instrumental in that decision as well.
- 3:28Speaker 1: He wrote the decision choosing to interact only with the
- 3:33Speaker 1: Chief Justice.
- 3:34Speaker 2: But Trump felt particularly betrayed by the justices that he
- 3:37Speaker 2: put on the court ruled against Neil Gorsicch.
- 3:40Speaker 3: Included in that though Neil Gorsicch, Justice Gorsicch not there
- 3:43Speaker 3: this evening, along with the other justices who are not there.
- 3:47Speaker 3: By the way, the four justices who did come for
- 3:49Speaker 3: tonight's State of the Union know the same four who
- 3:50Speaker 3: were here a year ago for the joint addressed to Congress.
- 3:55Speaker 1: Mary Bruce.
- 3:56Speaker 3: This President knows this is a critical mid term election year,
- 3:59Speaker 3: and that the republic Kids hold very slim majorities in
- 4:02Speaker 3: both the House and the Center.
- 4:03Speaker 5: David tonight is the president's best chance to defend his
- 4:06Speaker 5: first year back and try to sway skeptical voters to
- 4:09Speaker 5: back Republicans in the upcoming mid terms. He needs to
- 4:12Speaker 5: convince Americans that he has laser focused on that issue
- 4:15Speaker 5: that is top of mind for them, the cost of living.
- 4:17Speaker 5: He's going to argue his policies are working, but as
- 4:19Speaker 5: we know, the polls show so many Americans simply aren't
- 4:22Speaker 5: feeling that. In their wallets. Fifty seven percent disapprove of
- 4:26Speaker 5: his handling of the economy. And of course, as we've
- 4:29Speaker 5: been discussing, this comes just four days now after the
- 4:31Speaker 5: Court delivered that devastating blow right to the heart of
- 4:33Speaker 5: his economic agenda by invalidating most of his sweeping tariffs.
- 4:37Speaker 3: This term affordability really gets under his skin. He has said,
- 4:40Speaker 3: on the one hand, I've won on affordability, and on
- 4:43Speaker 3: the other says, this affordability crisis was created by my predecessor.
- 4:48Speaker 3: So it'll be curious to see how he tackles affordability
- 4:51Speaker 3: and what the American people are feeling at the grocery store,
- 4:54Speaker 3: in costs of utilities and housing and what have you.
- 4:57Speaker 1: I just want to point your attention at home, members.
- 5:00Speaker 3: Of Congress that have the high privilege and distinct honor
- 5:03Speaker 3: of presenting to you the President of the United States.
- 5:06Speaker 3: There you have at the Speaker of the House, with
- 5:08Speaker 3: George Washington's gabble tonight introducing President Trump.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Let's listen. Well, thank you very much, everybody.
- 5:35Speaker 3: It's really an honor, Speaker, Johnson, Vice President of Vance,
- 5:43Speaker 3: First Lady of the United States,
