- 0:01Speaker 1: Local News Now, a VOCM News Update.
- 0:05Speaker 2: I'm Sarah Strickland. A business owner in Mount Pearl is
- 0:08Speaker 2: calling attention to the dangers associated with kids riding motorized
- 0:12Speaker 2: and pedal bikes through his parking lot after a teenager
- 0:16Speaker 2: crashed on the weekend, leaving him in hospital. Justin French,
- 0:20Speaker 2: the owner of French's Automotive on Park Avenue, says they
- 0:23Speaker 2: have traffic of all types, including big trucks moving through
- 0:26Speaker 2: the lot day and night. French posted a video of
- 0:29Speaker 2: an incident Sunday in which a teenager was hurt after
- 0:32Speaker 2: one of the wheels separated from his bike.
- 0:35Speaker 1: And that young fella got hurt. He's got multiple stitches
- 0:39Speaker 1: in his face. He's cracked off numerous teeth, you know,
- 0:42Speaker 1: face and everything all swole up. And one of the things,
- 0:45Speaker 1: you know, and that sucks. Don't get me wrong. You
- 0:48Speaker 1: don't want to see anybody hurt any time. But it
- 0:51Speaker 1: could have been so much worse if that little guy
- 0:54Speaker 1: had happened to go, you know, a foot and a
- 0:56Speaker 1: half to the right. he would have went right in
- 0:58Speaker 1: through one of our glass doors. And then I sit
- 1:01Speaker 1: there and go, oh my, what would have happened to
- 1:03Speaker 1: him then?
- 1:04Speaker 2: French says a lot of people and vehicles use that
- 1:07Speaker 2: parking lot either to access the business or as a shortcut,
- 1:10Speaker 2: and bicycles and e-bikes do not mix well against cars
- 1:14Speaker 2: and trucks.
- 1:15Speaker 1: You know, even though we're not responsible... People think we are.
- 1:18Speaker 1: So it creates this whole argument. Or somebody's putting you
- 1:22Speaker 1: on social media, my vehicle was damaged down at a
- 1:24Speaker 1: French's Automotive, et cetera, et cetera. It just snowballs, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: we just don't need any of it. We want to
- 1:32Speaker 1: provide a great service for a great dollar with no hiccups.
- 1:36Speaker 1: And some of the stuff today is just, even though
- 1:38Speaker 1: it's outside of our control, we are trying to control
- 1:40Speaker 1: it a little bit because of the way that it
- 1:42Speaker 1: appears to everyone else's eyes.
- 1:45Speaker 2: The much-anticipated Netflix series Below, which was shot in this
- 1:49Speaker 2: province last year, is finally available. The executive director of PictureNL,
- 1:54Speaker 2: Laura Churchill, was among those who attended special screenings of
- 1:57Speaker 2: the first two episodes, one at the Toronto Film Festival
- 2:01Speaker 2: and one at home in St. John's. She says there
- 2:04Speaker 2: was a notable difference in the two screening experiences.
- 2:08Speaker 3: When you watch it with a hometown crowd, there's some
- 2:10Speaker 3: nuances and the authenticity of the show really shines through.
- 2:14Speaker 3: So you get a little more of the inside jokes
- 2:16Speaker 3: that's happening there. But what I would say watching it
- 2:19Speaker 3: with the crowd at TIFF, they were amazed and impressed
- 2:23Speaker 3: at how incredible the show was and just really great
- 2:26Speaker 3: to introduce Newfoundland Labrador to a global audience in that way.
- 2:30Speaker 2: One of the most popular and well-known musicians on the
- 2:33Speaker 2: planet has caught the attention of people in this province
- 2:36Speaker 2: for a subtle nod to Newfoundland and Labrador in a
- 2:39Speaker 2: recent social media post. Justin Bieber recently posted a collection
- 2:43Speaker 2: of photos to his Instagram account with the Great Big
- 2:46Speaker 2: Sea version of the iconic Eyes the Bye playing in
- 2:49Speaker 2: the background. Many in this province were quick to pick
- 2:52Speaker 2: up on the use of the song with Great Big
- 2:54Speaker 2: Sea frontman Alan Doyle commenting, Attaway, cheers from Newfoundland. Bieber
- 2:59Speaker 2: has performed in this province once at the 2010 Juno
- 3:03Speaker 2: Awards in St. John's. That's your news. I'm Sarah Strickland.
