- 1:00Speaker 3: Hello and welcome to Juicy Scoop. Well, I think I
- 1:03Speaker 3: have the king of Juicy Scoop. I have Steve Wilkos here.
- 1:08Speaker 3: You know him from his show starting your 17th season.
- 1:13Speaker 3: And I just know you as you have that you
- 1:16Speaker 3: were originally the bodyguard for Jerry Springer back in the
- 1:21Speaker 3: 90s and then got your own show.
- 1:23Speaker 2: Welcome to Juicy Scoop.
- 1:25Speaker 4: Thanks for having me.
- 1:26Speaker 2: I was a fan.
- 1:28Speaker 3: I've been a fan of Juicy Scoops from the beginning.
- 1:31Speaker 3: And I feel like those shows where people were just
- 1:34Speaker 3: telling it all and you couldn't believe it was really
- 1:38Speaker 3: what has started, you know, what I'm into a lot now,
- 1:41Speaker 3: which is like the housewives and stuff.
- 1:43Speaker 2: It all started from that. But welcome. Thank you for coming.
- 1:46Speaker 4: I love coming out to LA, so it doesn't take
- 1:48Speaker 4: much to get me out here.
- 1:50Speaker 2: Where do you guys film the show?
- 1:52Speaker 4: Stanford, Connecticut.
- 1:53Speaker 2: Oh, cool.
- 1:53Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:54Speaker 2: And your wife is here, Rochelle, and she is the
- 1:57Speaker 2: EP of your show. You guys have been married 27 years.
- 2:00Speaker 4: Oh, we've been married 23 years. Oh, 23. Been together
- 2:02Speaker 4: 26 years.
- 2:03Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 2:04Speaker 4: We met on Springer, and she was a young producer,
- 2:07Speaker 4: and I was security. Oh, really? I remember the first
- 2:10Speaker 4: time I ever saw her. She walked out on stage.
- 2:12Speaker 4: She was briefing a guest, and I was like, man, oof.
- 2:17Speaker 2: This is so cute.
- 2:18Speaker 1: Okay.
- 2:18Speaker 2: So wait, had you, you hadn't been married before?
- 2:20Speaker 4: Yeah, I was married before.
- 2:22Speaker 5: Oh, okay.
- 2:22Speaker 2: So you were divorced. And now let's get to your story.
- 2:25Speaker 3: Cause like, um, I did not know until I read
- 2:27Speaker 3: your bio that, um, but then it sounded familiar that
- 2:30Speaker 3: you were originally first a Marine, but you're always a Marine.
- 2:33Speaker 4: Yeah. I grew up in Chicago and, uh, my dad
- 2:35Speaker 4: was a military guy. I was a paratrooper in Korean
- 2:37Speaker 4: war and it was a Chicago cop. And I wanted
- 2:40Speaker 4: to be just like my dad. So after high school,
- 2:42Speaker 4: I went into the Marines. I got out, I became
- 2:44Speaker 4: a Chicago police officer. And, uh, was going to do
- 2:47Speaker 4: that for 30 years, get a pension, just like my
- 2:49Speaker 4: dad and retire. And I'd be retired right now if
- 2:52Speaker 4: I would stay with that program. But, uh, so my
- 2:56Speaker 4: buddy said one day, this was 1994 said, Hey, uh,
- 3:00Speaker 4: we need another guy for, uh, the side job. Do
- 3:03Speaker 4: you want to work? And I said, what is it?
- 3:04Speaker 4: He goes, Jerry Springer show. I didn't even know who
- 3:06Speaker 4: Jerry Springer was. Never heard of the guy. I said, yeah,
- 3:09Speaker 4: you know, paid good. And, uh, I went there for
- 3:11Speaker 4: one day. It was supposed to be for one day.
- 3:12Speaker 4: I didn't think I'd ever be back. And, you know,
- 3:16Speaker 4: they liked me and they kept calling me back. And
- 3:18Speaker 4: then the guy who was kind of running security for
- 3:20Speaker 4: the show got fired. I happened to be standing right
- 3:22Speaker 4: there when he got fired. And they said, looked at
- 3:25Speaker 4: me and they said, Hey, you want to run security here?
- 3:28Speaker 4: And I said, yeah. And I, And then my role
- 3:31Speaker 4: kept growing on the show.
- 3:33Speaker 2: So then were you no longer a police officer?
- 3:35Speaker 4: No, I stayed police officer. So I started on Springer 94,
- 3:39Speaker 4: and I didn't leave the police department until 2001. You're
- 3:42Speaker 4: really milking it out.
- 3:43Speaker 2: You're getting all those paychecks.
- 3:44Speaker 4: I wouldn't say milking it out. I was working my
- 3:46Speaker 4: ass off.
- 3:47Speaker 2: No, I know what I'm saying.
- 3:48Speaker 4: Oh, yeah.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Because that's what's going to end. I better make the
- 3:53Speaker 3: money while I can make the money kind of attitude.
- 3:55Speaker 4: But what was funny, I was making, you know, at
- 3:57Speaker 4: the time I was making like $ 45, 000 as a cop.
- 4:00Speaker 4: And my first contract on Springer was like 75. And
- 4:02Speaker 4: then the second one was like 150. So I, back
- 4:07Speaker 4: then there was no direct deposit for the police. So
- 4:09Speaker 4: like you had to go into the station to get
- 4:11Speaker 4: your paycheck. Well, there'd be like months go by that
- 4:14Speaker 4: I didn't even pick up my paycheck. Cause I was like,
- 4:16Speaker 4: you know, I'm making a lot of money on Springer.
- 4:18Speaker 4: And the sergeant would be like, look, I was picking
- 4:20Speaker 4: up your checks. You got like four in here, you know?
- 4:22Speaker 4: So then I'd eventually pick them up.
- 4:24Speaker 3: Um, Well, first of all, I just want to say
- 4:27Speaker 3: my dad, rest in peace, was a Marine as well.
- 4:30Speaker 2: Once a Marine, always Marine.
- 4:31Speaker 4: That's right.
- 4:31Speaker 3: My audience hates hearing my stories over again, but I
- 4:34Speaker 3: wanted to share that with you.
- 4:35Speaker 2: We had the doorbell of the Marine Corps.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I don't know if you know you can do that,
- 4:39Speaker 3: but kind of fun.
- 4:41Speaker 2: Anyway, so I love that.
- 4:43Speaker 3: And then I love, so when you became, when you
- 4:46Speaker 3: started to get on the show and be featured and everything,
- 4:48Speaker 3: but you were still an officer, were people recognizing you?
- 4:51Speaker 4: Oh, yeah. It was pretty crazy because- I mean, we
- 4:55Speaker 4: would go to calls where people were beating the hell
- 4:58Speaker 4: out of each other and they're bleeding and whatever. And
- 5:01Speaker 4: then I'd walk in and they're like, everybody would stop.
- 5:04Speaker 4: And they're like, what are you doing here? I'm like,
- 5:06Speaker 4: you called the police. They're like, yeah, but what you're
- 5:08Speaker 4: Steve from Jerry Springer. And I'm like, yeah, but I'm
- 5:10Speaker 4: a policeman, you know? So I kind of made my
- 5:13Speaker 4: job pretty easy because I would even stop guys like
- 5:16Speaker 4: gangbangers and I'd have my gun shoved up in their
- 5:19Speaker 4: ribs and They'd be like, Hey Steve, you know, and
- 5:22Speaker 4: I'm like, man, you like got a three 57 stuck
- 5:24Speaker 4: in your ribs. Like, you don't care. I'm like, I care.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Okay.
- 5:28Speaker 3: So now how, how long were you on the show
- 5:31Speaker 3: when you noticed your now wife who was working there?
- 5:35Speaker 4: Well, I was there before her. And like I said,
- 5:37Speaker 4: the first time I ever saw her, I didn't even
- 5:39Speaker 4: know her first time I ever saw her. She walked
- 5:41Speaker 4: down stage and she started briefing a guest. And I
- 5:43Speaker 4: was like, man, who's that? And, So then I liked her.
- 5:48Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not going to lie. Like right off
- 5:49Speaker 4: the bat, I was attracted to her. So like she would,
- 5:54Speaker 4: she was, were you an AP at the time? Yeah,
- 5:58Speaker 4: she was an assistant producer. So she would like go
- 6:00Speaker 4: all around the country, like do these shows. And I
- 6:03Speaker 4: would always, so I was the director of security. So
- 6:05Speaker 4: I would assign guys to go.
- 6:07Speaker 2: You mean like a live show?
- 6:08Speaker 4: No.
- 6:08Speaker 2: What do you mean?
- 6:09Speaker 4: To do like tape pieces, find people.
- 6:11Speaker 2: Oh, to find the people.
- 6:12Speaker 4: They'd film segments in certain parts and then they'd bring
- 6:14Speaker 4: them on the show. So whenever other producers went on
- 6:19Speaker 4: the road, I would assign one of my guys to
- 6:21Speaker 4: go travel with them. But when Michelle went on the road,
- 6:23Speaker 4: I always assigned myself. And so then eventually I told
- 6:26Speaker 4: her I was in love with her.
- 6:28Speaker 2: Wait, hold on. I need to hear this.
- 6:30Speaker 3: So when was the first time that you either said
- 6:33Speaker 3: something or you made out or I need to know
- 6:36Speaker 3: the details.
- 6:36Speaker 4: Well, we were very close friends for like two years.
- 6:39Speaker 2: And the whole time that you're the friend, you know
- 6:42Speaker 2: you're hot for her.
- 6:43Speaker 4: Oh, big time.
- 6:44Speaker 2: So now how do you.
- 6:45Speaker 3: Play the friend who then becomes the boyfriend who then
- 6:49Speaker 3: becomes the husband?
- 6:50Speaker 4: Well, she was engaged to be married and I was,
- 6:53Speaker 4: and I was, I was married at the time and,
- 6:58Speaker 4: but I like, I knew I was done. I wanted out. And, uh,
- 7:02Speaker 4: so we were on a remote down in Florida and, uh, I, Oh,
- 7:06Speaker 4: I got her wedding invitation to mail. That's what it was. And, uh,
- 7:10Speaker 4: or save the date, save the date thing. And I
- 7:13Speaker 4: felt sick to my stomach because I'm like, because we
- 7:16Speaker 4: were very close as friends, but just friends. No fooling, nothing.
- 7:20Speaker 4: But she must have had a feeling. I liked her.
- 7:24Speaker 2: Oh, you didn't? She's here now.
- 7:25Speaker 4: Oh, really? See, I don't believe that. Because even her
- 7:28Speaker 4: mother said, she's like, this guy's in love with you.
- 7:32Speaker 4: And she's like, mom, you're crazy. But her mom was right.
- 7:36Speaker 4: So we were down in Florida and we were doing
- 7:38Speaker 4: a remote, like we were filming movies. pieces of a
- 7:41Speaker 4: show and then going to go back to Chicago. And
- 7:43Speaker 4: so after we got done, I said, man, I got
- 7:45Speaker 4: to talk to you. And she's like, what? You know,
- 7:46Speaker 4: it's kind of like your show. Oh, it's Juicy Scoop
- 7:49Speaker 4: or something. You know, she's like, she's got good stuff
- 7:52Speaker 4: to tell me. And so we went to her room
- 7:54Speaker 4: and I told her, I go, hey man, I know
- 7:55Speaker 4: you're getting married and everything, but I go, I got
- 7:57Speaker 4: to tell you this. And you know, I'm in love
- 7:59Speaker 4: with you. She was like, and we had never kissed,
- 8:03Speaker 4: never held hands, nothing to that point. And so then
- 8:07Speaker 4: we got back to Chicago. We went out for drinks.
- 8:09Speaker 2: And, Wait, wait, stop. What did you, what did she say?
- 8:12Speaker 4: Not much. I thought I was going to get fired
- 8:15Speaker 4: when I got back to Chicago.
- 8:16Speaker 2: What did you, I have to know what she said.
- 8:18Speaker 4: She didn't say a lot.
- 8:20Speaker 2: Just thank you.
- 8:20Speaker 3: Thank you, but I'm going to have a dress fitting tomorrow.
- 8:24Speaker 2: Like, I don't get it.
- 8:24Speaker 4: Yeah, she kind of like was stunned. And I really
- 8:28Speaker 4: don't remember what she said, but I was nervous because
- 8:30Speaker 4: I thought she's going to tell the boss and I'm
- 8:32Speaker 4: going to get fired. You know, like.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Like, yeah.
- 8:35Speaker 4: She looked at me like I was crazy. And, but
- 8:38Speaker 4: then we got back to Chicago and we went out
- 8:39Speaker 4: for a drink and we started talking and.
- 8:42Speaker 2: Now, how far away is the wedding when you go
- 8:44Speaker 2: out for the drink?
- 8:47Speaker 4: It was a good. Six months.
- 8:49Speaker 5: Eight months.
- 8:50Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 8:50Speaker 5: Okay.
- 8:50Speaker 2: So it was far off.
- 8:51Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 8:52Speaker 4: Okay.
- 8:53Speaker 2: And so you go out for the drink and then
- 8:54Speaker 2: what happens?
- 8:56Speaker 4: Just talked for hours.
- 8:57Speaker 2: About, could you be a couple or what?
- 9:00Speaker 4: Yeah. I mean, it's, that was so long ago. It's
- 9:02Speaker 4: hard to remember what we talked about, but obviously it
- 9:04Speaker 4: had to be about us being together. And, but we
- 9:07Speaker 4: didn't kiss for like two weeks. Like we kept going out,
- 9:10Speaker 4: didn't kiss. Finally, she kissed me.
- 9:12Speaker 2: So she made the first move?
- 9:13Speaker 4: No, no, no.
- 9:14Speaker 3: I did.
- 9:14Speaker 4: Okay.
- 9:15Speaker 2: So how did that happen?
- 9:16Speaker 4: I don't remember.
- 9:17Speaker 2: Come on.
- 9:18Speaker 4: I don't remember. I know it was in my car.
- 9:20Speaker 4: I do remember that.
- 9:21Speaker 2: Oh, in the car.
- 9:22Speaker 4: That's hot. We went out, we went out for drinks
- 9:24Speaker 4: again and then we're in a car and I kissed
- 9:26Speaker 4: her and, and then we would have hours long makeout
- 9:30Speaker 4: sessions after that. I mean, hours long, right? Like just crazy.
- 9:35Speaker 2: But just make out.
- 9:36Speaker 4: We probably now in a course of a year probably
- 9:39Speaker 4: kissed like 10 seconds of pure passionate kiss, you know.
- 9:42Speaker 4: And like back then it was hours and hours on end,
- 9:46Speaker 4: you know. So crazy.
- 9:48Speaker 2: Oh, my God. Okay.
- 9:50Speaker 3: So then she, when does she get the nerve to
- 9:54Speaker 3: end it with the fiance?
- 9:56Speaker 4: So like, I don't remember the whole timeline, but so
- 9:58Speaker 4: we started seeing each other and she said, you're, you're out.
- 10:02Speaker 4: Are you like, you're not bullshitting me about your marriage.
- 10:04Speaker 4: Like it's over. And I said, yeah, like I'm out
- 10:07Speaker 4: right now. As soon as you say go. And, uh,
- 10:10Speaker 4: and she said, well, I'm going to call off my wedding.
- 10:13Speaker 4: And I said, cool. And that was, that was like probably.
- 10:18Speaker 4: a month or two after we started talking.
- 10:19Speaker 2: And then when do you guys come public with the
- 10:21Speaker 2: people at work at the Jerry Springer?
- 10:22Speaker 4: Not for a long time. Because this was in February
- 10:26Speaker 4: that I told her I loved her. And then like,
- 10:29Speaker 4: you know, started kissing and stuff in March. And then
- 10:32Speaker 4: I remember Tracy, our friend Tracy was getting married. She
- 10:37Speaker 4: was Jerry's assistant. Yeah. And we're still great friends with her.
- 10:40Speaker 4: And she got married in August, right? Was it around August? August.
- 10:44Speaker 4: And that's when we kind of came out, like, because
- 10:46Speaker 4: there was a lot of people from the show.
- 10:48Speaker 2: Right, going.
- 10:48Speaker 4: And we were making out on the dance floor at
- 10:50Speaker 4: the wedding. And people were like, they're together. And they're like, well,
- 10:54Speaker 4: the cat's out of the bag now. So, because, you know,
- 10:57Speaker 4: we were working at the show and we didn't want
- 10:59Speaker 4: people knowing our business. And, you know, so, but once
- 11:02Speaker 4: that came out, then everybody knew.
- 11:04Speaker 3: And then, so then after a few years of you
- 11:07Speaker 3: guys being out, you're still, you don't have your show yet,
- 11:10Speaker 3: you're still.
- 11:11Speaker 4: Oh no, this was years later. Because we started seeing
- 11:13Speaker 4: each other in 97, I didn't get my show until 2007.
- 11:17Speaker 3: So, okay, so for 10 years you're this character that
- 11:20Speaker 3: we see, but you also are like separating the people
- 11:22Speaker 3: fighting and stuff. Yeah, yeah. And so then when do
- 11:25Speaker 3: you guys, when you ask her to marry you?
- 11:29Speaker 4: We were together, we were living together for about like three, no,
- 11:32Speaker 4: two years. We were living together for two years, 97
- 11:35Speaker 4: to 99. Then we got married in 2000. Okay.
- 11:39Speaker 3: I hate to make it about me. We were married
- 11:41Speaker 3: in 2000.
- 11:42Speaker 2: Dad's a Marine.
- 11:43Speaker 4: Our kids are the same age.
- 11:46Speaker 3: You have a 20 and an 18-year-old. I have a
- 11:47Speaker 3: 20 and almost 18-year-old.
- 11:50Speaker 2: Yeah. And the fact that you guys work together.
- 11:54Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:54Speaker 3: And then she's the EP of your show now.
- 11:56Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 11:57Speaker 2: Okay. So tell me about– so you start having kids.
- 12:01Speaker 5: Yes.
- 12:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 12:02Speaker 3: And then when does it come up that like, we
- 12:05Speaker 3: think that you could have.
- 12:06Speaker 2: Your own show.
- 12:07Speaker 4: So I remember in 2002, there was something like a
- 12:13Speaker 4: newspaper article. So we're like, Oh, there's talks about Steve
- 12:17Speaker 4: Wilkos getting a show. And I taped the pilot. It
- 12:20Speaker 4: was called stings. It was like a hidden camera show.
- 12:23Speaker 4: And I was terrible in it. Like, I'm sure we
- 12:25Speaker 4: have a tape. If we watch it now, we'd laugh.
- 12:27Speaker 4: Like I was brutal, but, But that was the first
- 12:31Speaker 4: time there was, like, some mention. And, you know, we thought, oh, wow,
- 12:34Speaker 4: if this thing goes. But, you know.
- 12:37Speaker 3: And this would be under Jerry's production company? Or was
- 12:39Speaker 3: he part of it? No, but was Jerry Springer part
- 12:42Speaker 3: of it?
- 12:42Speaker 4: No, Jerry, he didn't know anything.
- 12:43Speaker 3: Oh, okay.
- 12:44Speaker 4: He was just, he was really busy with his show.
- 12:46Speaker 2: Okay.
- 12:47Speaker 4: But the old EP, and so we were doing stuff
- 12:49Speaker 4: like that. But we always said, it's never going to happen, right?
- 12:53Speaker 4: Because getting your own TV show is, like, incredibly hard,
- 12:56Speaker 4: you know?
- 12:56Speaker 5: Right.
- 12:57Speaker 4: And I was nobody. I mean, you know, I was
- 12:59Speaker 4: Steve from Jerry Springer, but even so. But then it
- 13:03Speaker 4: got to the point where like, you know, all shows end, right?
- 13:07Speaker 4: Like no matter who you are, your show's going to end.
- 13:09Speaker 4: So like at that time, Springer was on there like 15,
- 13:12Speaker 4: 16 years. And we're like, you know, we kind of
- 13:15Speaker 4: need you to get a show. Like we're talking to ourselves,
- 13:17Speaker 4: you know?
- 13:18Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 13:18Speaker 4: And because like, you know, we want to stay in
- 13:21Speaker 4: this business, you know? So she would have been fine.
- 13:23Speaker 4: She could have got another producing job, but that would
- 13:25Speaker 4: have been the end of the road for me. So like,
- 13:29Speaker 4: you know, when Jerry went on Dancing with the Stars,
- 13:32Speaker 4: I ended up hosting the show while he was gone.
- 13:34Speaker 4: And those shows rated well. And then the next year,
- 13:37Speaker 4: Jerry was like, oh, you could host the shows. I'll
- 13:39Speaker 4: take Monday off. You host the shows. And I got
- 13:41Speaker 4: paid a little more extra money when I hosted the show.
- 13:44Speaker 4: So I was like, oh, this is great. And I
- 13:46Speaker 4: think NBC at that point became aware, like, hey, we
- 13:50Speaker 4: should give this guy a show, which was terrifying because
- 13:54Speaker 4: I didn't know what I was going to do. And
- 13:56Speaker 4: you know, I was on this hit show and then
- 13:58Speaker 4: to go on a new show where it could fail
- 14:00Speaker 4: like a million shows did during the two thousands. But
- 14:05Speaker 4: you know, I have the secret weapon here and your wife,
- 14:08Speaker 4: you're right. So, and I knew I was going to succeed.
- 14:12Speaker 2: Oh my God. Okay.
- 14:13Speaker 3: So then, so then it, so then you had your
- 14:16Speaker 3: show while Jerry Springer still is happening or?
- 14:18Speaker 4: So yeah, we both saw, uh, that was 2007. I
- 14:20Speaker 4: launched and, um, She was still on Springer, but she
- 14:26Speaker 4: really didn't, was working on Springer. She was working on
- 14:29Speaker 4: my show. And so Jerry would tape, then I would
- 14:32Speaker 4: come in and tape. We were all in the same office.
- 14:34Speaker 4: A lot of people that were working on Springer were
- 14:36Speaker 4: working on my show. So it was very meshed together,
- 14:40Speaker 4: you know. And then we were, we taped, me and
- 14:43Speaker 4: Jerry taped those two years in Chicago. And then we
- 14:48Speaker 4: all moved to Connecticut, you know, when the economy collapsed.
- 14:51Speaker 4: And they put me, Maury, and Jerry all in the
- 14:52Speaker 4: same studio in Connecticut. So I did my first two
- 14:55Speaker 4: years in Chicago with Jerry and then me, Jerry and
- 14:59Speaker 4: Maury all moved to Connecticut in 2009.
- 15:02Speaker 3: And now was there ever any moment where like there
- 15:07Speaker 3: was any kind of weird competition or like people being like, oh,
- 15:11Speaker 3: I like Steve's show better than Jerry. And then like
- 15:13Speaker 3: those fans would try to get in Jerry's ear and
- 15:16Speaker 3: be dicks about it.
- 15:17Speaker 4: No, because he was so established and such a big star.
- 15:20Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I would hope that wouldn't be the case.
- 15:23Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, listen, the guy was never not fantastic
- 15:26Speaker 4: with me. You know, he was just always great to me,
- 15:29Speaker 4: always rooting me on.
- 15:30Speaker 2: That's awesome.
- 15:31Speaker 4: You know, Jerry's such a huge star. He wasn't threatened
- 15:35Speaker 4: by anybody, you know? And even to this day, I've
- 15:38Speaker 4: been on the air for 17 years. I'm never going
- 15:40Speaker 4: to be as huge star as Jerry. Like, that's... First
- 15:43Speaker 4: of all, nobody is.
- 15:44Speaker 3: Like.
- 15:46Speaker 4: Look how big Oprah was. And I still say to
- 15:48Speaker 4: this day, when Jerry was at his aunt, nobody was
- 15:51Speaker 4: a bigger star than him, not even Oprah. I mean,
- 15:53Speaker 4: we were like the Beatles, man. Like we were in London.
- 15:56Speaker 4: you know, doing publicity and people would surround their car
- 15:58Speaker 4: and start shaking it, man. Like trying to turn it
- 16:00Speaker 4: all like, cause he was that big, you know?
- 16:03Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:03Speaker 2: It was just, the show was just everywhere.
- 16:05Speaker 3: Right.
- 16:05Speaker 1: Right.
- 16:05Speaker 4: And you know, like they were putting them on that
- 16:07Speaker 4: late night here in LA.
- 16:08Speaker 2: Oh, I know. It was nuts. I used to watch
- 16:11Speaker 2: it at night when I was single.
- 16:12Speaker 3: And I, I remember at one point in my life,
- 16:16Speaker 3: I was going on all these bad dates, you know,
- 16:17Speaker 3: I hadn't met my husband, but I knew I wanted
- 16:20Speaker 3: to be a mom.
- 16:21Speaker 2: And I remember, I'm like, you know what?
- 16:23Speaker 3: Even if I just have to be a single mom now,
- 16:25Speaker 3: And I just come home and watch Jerry Springer for
- 16:27Speaker 3: the rest of it.
- 16:28Speaker 2: I literally said that. I'm like, I don't care.
- 16:30Speaker 3: Cause it's like, I'm still kind of happy just doing this.
- 16:33Speaker 2: So like, we'll see what happens.
- 16:35Speaker 4: So, yeah. So there was never, unless the guy was,
- 16:40Speaker 4: I was super close friends with the guy. Like I
- 16:42Speaker 4: love the band. Um, so there was no, and, and again,
- 16:45Speaker 4: I'm terrified when I get my show, you know, cause like,
- 16:48Speaker 4: you don't know if you're going to get canceled and
- 16:50Speaker 4: it's tough. And, you know, Jerry, he certainly never was
- 16:53Speaker 4: threatened by me. And he was always so supportive and
- 16:56Speaker 4: just generous and gracious. And, you know, the guy was wonderful.
- 17:00Speaker 3: So then when does, when do you, the wife who's here,
- 17:05Speaker 3: when does she then come in as the EP?
- 17:08Speaker 2: Like how far along?
- 17:10Speaker 4: So the first year of my show, and we were,
- 17:12Speaker 4: it was funny, we were talking about that, about like
- 17:15Speaker 4: the first year of my show, they could just burn
- 17:17Speaker 4: all the tapes. We're never airing those over again because...
- 17:21Speaker 4: She was an EP. It was our old EP. And
- 17:23Speaker 4: I was produced in a way where I was just
- 17:25Speaker 4: one level. All I did was yell and scream at
- 17:27Speaker 4: people that first season. I mean, it was terrible. And
- 17:29Speaker 4: I hated doing my show. I mean, I literally hated
- 17:32Speaker 4: coming to work.
- 17:33Speaker 2: Oh, really?
- 17:34Speaker 4: And almost dragged myself to death over the summer because
- 17:38Speaker 4: I dreaded coming back for season two. Well, about a
- 17:41Speaker 4: week into season two, that person got fired. And so
- 17:47Speaker 4: he was running both the Springer show and my show.
- 17:51Speaker 4: So my wife was co-executive producer on the Spinner Show
- 17:55Speaker 4: at that time and had no title on my show,
- 17:57Speaker 4: even though she was working on my show. So when
- 18:01Speaker 4: they made the change, they came to her and they said, okay,
- 18:04Speaker 4: you're going to be the new EP of the Spinner Show,
- 18:06Speaker 4: but we're not going to give you your husband's show.
- 18:08Speaker 4: You're not going to get both. And I was like, well,
- 18:11Speaker 4: I won her. She's been working on it. And they're like, no,
- 18:14Speaker 4: we can't have it. I'm like, okay. So I brought
- 18:16Speaker 4: some other guy in that they said, oh, this is
- 18:18Speaker 4: going to be a good guy. And he was a
- 18:20Speaker 4: nice guy. I met with him. They're like, how do
- 18:22Speaker 4: you feel about it? I'm like, he's fine. But it
- 18:26Speaker 4: didn't work out. The guy, they couldn't get together with
- 18:29Speaker 4: the contract. Well, in the meantime, she was running my show.
- 18:32Speaker 4: And the ratings are going up.
- 18:35Speaker 2: She's running your show, but she's not running your show.
- 18:37Speaker 4: She's not.
- 18:38Speaker 2: She's got a title, but she's doing all the work.
- 18:40Speaker 4: She's running it until they can bring somebody in.
- 18:42Speaker 2: Oh, she is now. Okay, right. Okay, got it.
- 18:44Speaker 4: Well- It was like two months, right? It was around
- 18:47Speaker 4: about that period of time. Well, I remember talking to
- 18:50Speaker 4: our old president, Barry Wallach. I go, well, hey, man. Okay.
- 18:54Speaker 4: This guy said no. I want my wife. And he goes, yeah,
- 18:57Speaker 4: we're going to give it to you. She's doing a
- 18:59Speaker 4: great job. And she's been the EP ever since.
- 19:02Speaker 3: And when you guys were doing both the shows and
- 19:04Speaker 3: you're getting the same kind.
- 19:06Speaker 2: Of people that are like getting a fight. I slept
- 19:08Speaker 2: with my son-in-law.
- 19:09Speaker 4: No, not really.
- 19:10Speaker 2: Totally different shows. So now to explain how they.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Are different and how it wasn't ever a conflict of like,
- 19:14Speaker 3: getting the gotcha people and who got it first.
- 19:16Speaker 4: The Springer Show was a circus.
- 19:18Speaker 3: Okay.
- 19:19Speaker 4: It's the strippers and everything, right?
- 19:21Speaker 2: Right.
- 19:21Speaker 4: Like love triangles and stuff. Where Rochelle made my show into, hey,
- 19:27Speaker 4: we're going to take you as a policeman off the
- 19:28Speaker 4: streets of Chicago and we're going to put you on stage.
- 19:31Speaker 4: And you're going to deal with the same kind of
- 19:32Speaker 4: stories you do as a policeman.
- 19:34Speaker 2: Okay, great.
- 19:35Speaker 4: That's what we've always done. So we were completely two
- 19:38Speaker 4: different shows right from the get-go. Because if we, people thought,
- 19:43Speaker 4: I remember when I was out here in LA doing
- 19:45Speaker 4: the press when my show got launched, people thought we
- 19:47Speaker 4: were just going to be an extension of the Springer Show.
- 19:49Speaker 4: Like I would do a version of Joey Springer Show. Well,
- 19:52Speaker 4: that's probably the quickest way to get canceled, right? Like
- 19:54Speaker 4: do something that's like the same. So they decided, because
- 19:59Speaker 4: really I had no idea what I was going to do.
- 20:01Speaker 4: I was going to do what they told me to do.
- 20:03Speaker 4: And so she was like, just you're a policeman and
- 20:06Speaker 4: you're going to be a policeman on stage. And it's worked.
- 20:10Speaker 4: They think you're done for the day, but they don't
- 20:13Speaker 4: know about the drawer.
- 20:15Speaker 2: The drawer. Just the one square before bed. Or two,
- 20:22Speaker 2: you know. Nobody's watching.
- 20:25Speaker 3: You deserve a treat.
- 20:29Speaker 1: With eight flavours to choose from, you can choose the
- 20:32Speaker 1: flavour you favour with Cadbury Dairy Milk.
- 20:40Speaker 5: Where did that need come from where you thought that
- 20:43Speaker 5: you had to succeed.
- 20:44Speaker 4: In order to feel loved? He said, I have a
- 21:11Speaker 4: work dad. I need a home dad. What happens next?
- 21:13Speaker 4: When I came in, he started crying.
- 21:15Speaker 5: Everybody in life encounters hardships. What defines them is not
- 21:20Speaker 5: those hard moments that they go through. It's about what
- 21:22Speaker 5: happens next.
- 21:23Speaker 2: I decided to risk it all. I realized how valuable
- 21:26Speaker 2: every day was.
- 21:27Speaker 4: You're worth the work.
- 21:28Speaker 2: Listen, Dara, I'm not going to pull punches. You can
- 21:30Speaker 2: use your voice even if it's shaped.
- 21:32Speaker 5: The stories are different, but the impact is the same.
- 21:35Speaker 5: Only one question matters. What happens next?
- 21:47Speaker 3: And so what are some of the great stories of like,
- 21:52Speaker 3: did you help someone or someone comes back like a
- 21:54Speaker 3: couple of years later and they're like, I can't believe it,
- 21:56Speaker 3: but thank God I went on your show.
- 21:57Speaker 4: Well, not so much specific stories, but I'll say this.
- 22:02Speaker 4: Being on a spring show was the happiest, fun time
- 22:05Speaker 4: of my life. Like, you know, we were together. We
- 22:08Speaker 4: didn't have kids yet. So we were just. no but
- 22:11Speaker 4: i'm saying we have no responsibility.
- 22:13Speaker 3: My happiest time of my life was before i had kids.
- 22:16Speaker 4: No no no i didn't mean it like that but
- 22:17Speaker 4: i'm saying you had no responsibility we were just having
- 22:20Speaker 4: fun and we were like last night we were done
- 22:24Speaker 4: at 8 30 like we went to dinner we go
- 22:26Speaker 4: to mr charles we're having a great time and like
- 22:28Speaker 4: oh it's 8 30 you know like okay time for
- 22:31Speaker 4: bed you know like but back when we were doing
- 22:34Speaker 4: springer we were you know we get on tape and
- 22:36Speaker 4: we were out we're going to these parties and And
- 22:38Speaker 4: bars and restaurants and, like, no response. Then, you know,
- 22:42Speaker 4: sleep all morning and, you know, who's going to go
- 22:44Speaker 4: get the McDonald's? That was our– so we had so
- 22:47Speaker 4: much fun. Right? I mean, we were saying that last night.
- 22:52Speaker 4: We're getting old now. But back then it was just–
- 22:55Speaker 4: it was fantastic. So I forgot the question.
- 22:58Speaker 3: No, so were there moments– has anyone ever been on
- 23:00Speaker 3: the show and– Oh.
- 23:02Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 23:03Speaker 4: Oh. I'm sorry.
- 23:06Speaker 2: So, like, what was it where people.
- 23:08Speaker 3: Come back and they're like, or any follow-ups where you
- 23:11Speaker 3: really felt like, I really helped this person?
- 23:13Speaker 4: Oh, okay, so that was my point I was getting to.
- 23:15Speaker 4: I got a little sidetracked there.
- 23:16Speaker 2: When you're thinking about.
- 23:17Speaker 4: All the fun parties. So, when I'm having all this
- 23:18Speaker 4: great time on Spinner, and, you know, we're doing movies, right?
- 23:22Speaker 4: Austin Powers, and, you know, we're doing all the, right?
- 23:25Speaker 4: We're doing Leno and Letterman, so it was just a
- 23:27Speaker 4: great time in my life, right? So, but the other,
- 23:31Speaker 4: the drawback was, when I'd be out in public, people
- 23:34Speaker 4: would say, Oh, what trailer park are those people from?
- 23:37Speaker 4: And like, that's all you'd hear.
- 23:38Speaker 2: What would they say?
- 23:38Speaker 1: What?
- 23:38Speaker 4: What trailer park?
- 23:40Speaker 2: Oh, okay.
- 23:40Speaker 4: Oh, where'd you find those trailer park? Where'd you get
- 23:42Speaker 4: these guys? You know, and I always hated that, you know,
- 23:44Speaker 4: because I'm like, they're just less fortunate than you. Like
- 23:47Speaker 4: maybe they didn't have parents or education or whatever, you know,
- 23:51Speaker 4: but they're just, I had fun with all the people
- 23:53Speaker 4: that came on the spring show. They were good people.
- 23:56Speaker 4: But since we've done my show, I get lots and
- 23:59Speaker 4: lots of emails where I get people coming up into
- 24:01Speaker 4: my street. Hey, Steve, you changed my life. You got
- 24:04Speaker 4: me out of, you know, watching your show got me
- 24:07Speaker 4: out of this abusive relationship. Your show gave me the
- 24:10Speaker 4: courage to speak up that I was a victim of
- 24:12Speaker 4: sexual assault, you know, things like that. So, you know,
- 24:17Speaker 4: you go in and it's my job and I feel
- 24:19Speaker 4: like I'm just doing my job. But when you get
- 24:21Speaker 4: people that write into you or come up to you
- 24:23Speaker 4: in the street and say, hey, man, I never met
- 24:25Speaker 4: you before, but you changed my life. Like, that's so
- 24:28Speaker 4: powerful to me. It's such a good feeling that You know, listen,
- 24:32Speaker 4: we're an entertainment show when it comes down to it.
- 24:35Speaker 4: You got to get ratings. You got to entertain. But
- 24:37Speaker 4: when you do a show that people feel like it's
- 24:40Speaker 4: impacting their life, it does feel good.
- 24:43Speaker 3: And do you feel like once you had your own show,
- 24:46Speaker 3: as great as that is, and then you look back
- 24:49Speaker 3: at the times before you had all the employees, before
- 24:52Speaker 3: you had the two main employees, your children, before you
- 24:55Speaker 3: had all that, like, I can see why sometimes it's like,
- 24:58Speaker 3: oh my gosh, when it was just show up and be,
- 25:00Speaker 3: and then like not worry about letting this person go.
- 25:03Speaker 4: You're not, you're not like when I was on Jerry's show,
- 25:06Speaker 4: the pressure wasn't on me. I was number two. So,
- 25:10Speaker 4: you know, you have all this fun, no responsibility and,
- 25:14Speaker 4: you know, draw a pretty good paycheck. You know, when
- 25:17Speaker 4: you get your own show, All the pressure's on you,
- 25:20Speaker 4: you know? Because, you know, if you fail, everybody loses
- 25:23Speaker 4: their job, but it's Steve Wilkos got canceled. It's not
- 25:27Speaker 4: Steve Wilkos and Steph got canceled.
- 25:29Speaker 2: Right, yeah.
- 25:30Speaker 4: So, like, you don't want to fail like that.
- 25:33Speaker 3: And has that been, how do you guys, how is
- 25:35Speaker 3: it working together with your spouse?
- 25:38Speaker 2: Because I work with my spouse.
- 25:39Speaker 4: It's great for us. I'll just say that. Yeah. I
- 25:43Speaker 4: know nobody's going to have my back better than her.
- 25:46Speaker 4: I know she's never going to put me in a
- 25:47Speaker 4: bad light. And even with my old EP, we clashed
- 25:52Speaker 4: all the time, butted heads. I don't butt heads with her.
- 25:55Speaker 4: I just do what she tells me to do because
- 25:57Speaker 4: I know she's right. And she can tell you this.
- 26:01Speaker 4: I'm one of the few TV hosts that I stay
- 26:04Speaker 4: out of the way of my production staff. I don't
- 26:07Speaker 4: try to put my input in. Maybe sometime I'll read
- 26:09Speaker 4: a story in a paper and say, oh, we should
- 26:11Speaker 4: try to get this. But that's as far as it goes.
- 26:13Speaker 4: And that's not very often.
- 26:14Speaker 2: So as far as like then getting the people and stuff.
- 26:17Speaker 4: Like the shows and what direction we're going to do this.
- 26:19Speaker 2: You leave that up to that person's responsibility.
- 26:22Speaker 4: And that person's right there. Yeah. I just do what
- 26:24Speaker 4: she tells me to do. And it's worked. And it's
- 26:26Speaker 4: worked very well for 17 years. Yeah.
- 26:29Speaker 3: So when you hear of stories like, you know, Wendy Williams. Now,
- 26:33Speaker 3: she had the husband EP, too.
- 26:35Speaker 4: Yeah, I know.
- 26:36Speaker 2: That did not.
- 26:36Speaker 4: Work out as well. I knew Wendy really well, and
- 26:39Speaker 4: I love Wendy.
- 26:40Speaker 2: I know.
- 26:40Speaker 4: And it's a shame. It's so sad. It's so sad.
- 26:44Speaker 2: She killed it for so many years.
- 26:46Speaker 4: I loved her show. Like, I don't watch daytime talk.
- 26:48Speaker 4: But if I happened to come across her show, I'd
- 26:50Speaker 4: watch it because I thought she was great and I
- 26:52Speaker 4: loved her show. It was interesting. I met him. He
- 26:55Speaker 4: was very nice to me. But, like, just from what
- 26:58Speaker 4: I read, just from what I heard, that's not the
- 27:01Speaker 4: same scenario that we got going on. You know what
- 27:03Speaker 4: I mean?
- 27:03Speaker 2: Like, you know, she doesn't have a lover living down
- 27:06Speaker 2: the street.
- 27:06Speaker 4: She's not having kids with somebody, you know, I don't know. Like, Hey,
- 27:09Speaker 4: why are you a little chubby there?
- 27:13Speaker 2: No, I know.
- 27:14Speaker 4: That's just crazy.
- 27:16Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 27:16Speaker 3: I do think there is a stigma, a history with,
- 27:22Speaker 3: Women who then bring their husband in and then the
- 27:26Speaker 3: Hollywood people around.
- 27:27Speaker 4: Because he probably was not a TV producer when they
- 27:30Speaker 4: got that show. She was a producer long before we
- 27:33Speaker 4: ever got together. She truly is a producer. And that's
- 27:36Speaker 4: the problem. When you start bringing people on staff that
- 27:38Speaker 4: you're related to to give them a job, and I
- 27:41Speaker 4: think that happens a lot in this business. People like
- 27:46Speaker 4: our friends, people probably in our family, we're like, no, man, no.
- 27:52Speaker 4: We're not doing that.
- 27:53Speaker 2: How do you say it?
- 27:54Speaker 4: No. I have no problem saying no.
- 27:58Speaker 2: So like if somebody is, but what, to everybody?
- 28:01Speaker 4: Because I tell people, I go, listen, you're my friend
- 28:03Speaker 4: or you're my family member. And someday I might have
- 28:06Speaker 4: to jump in your ass and, you know, fire you
- 28:09Speaker 4: or whatever. And I go, that would ruin our relationship.
- 28:11Speaker 4: So no, the answer is no, because eventually, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 4: I might have to get in your ass and you're
- 28:16Speaker 4: not going to like that. I.
- 28:19Speaker 3: I kind of am dealing with stuff like that too,
- 28:21Speaker 3: you know, that I've had my own show for a while.
- 28:23Speaker 3: And even it's much, obviously much smaller production and stuff,
- 28:27Speaker 3: but it's the same kind of thing. Like, even if
- 28:28Speaker 3: somebody was like, oh, you know, can my daughter or
- 28:31Speaker 3: whatever work on the show? I'm like, okay, but then
- 28:34Speaker 3: I go, but then the daughter decides she doesn't like
- 28:37Speaker 3: me anymore or whatever.
- 28:39Speaker 4: She does a half ass job.
- 28:41Speaker 2: I don't think she's great now.
- 28:43Speaker 3: Like I don't have that many friends and I can't
- 28:46Speaker 3: lose that many more. So like, I, And it's sort
- 28:50Speaker 3: of a bummer because it's like, you would like to
- 28:52Speaker 3: be that person that.
- 28:53Speaker 2: Helps, but it's not worth it.
- 28:55Speaker 4: It's not a good idea.
- 28:56Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:57Speaker 2: It's like the classic don't do business.
- 28:58Speaker 4: So many people we know would love to be my assistant.
- 29:01Speaker 5: Right.
- 29:01Speaker 4: Cause they think, Oh, that'd be a great job. You know,
- 29:03Speaker 4: I don't have to do anything, but like my system
- 29:06Speaker 4: works hard. Like, and there's a lot of things she's
- 29:07Speaker 4: got to do and she's got to be ahead of
- 29:09Speaker 4: the curve on things and like, you know, expect things
- 29:12Speaker 4: and this, that, and, I can't have somebody just mail
- 29:16Speaker 4: it in and man, like you gotta, you gotta do
- 29:18Speaker 4: that job and you gotta work it, you know? And
- 29:20Speaker 4: if you don't do that job, I'm going to be
- 29:22Speaker 4: up your butt. You know what I mean? Like, and
- 29:24Speaker 4: you're not going to like that. And I might have
- 29:26Speaker 4: to fire you. And then guess what? We're not going
- 29:28Speaker 4: to be friends or, you know, you're going to be
- 29:29Speaker 4: mad at me. And oh, well, so we just say no,
- 29:33Speaker 4: no to that.
- 29:34Speaker 3: And did you ever say yes and then realize that
- 29:37Speaker 3: you shouldn't, or that was always your policy from the beginning?
- 29:39Speaker 2: I don't think so. you were in television so you kind.
- 29:42Speaker 4: Of knew the deal we just know you know listen
- 29:45Speaker 4: when I was the head of security on Springer I
- 29:48Speaker 4: heard some people that you know I was friends with
- 29:52Speaker 4: or even more and it just didn't work out and
- 29:56Speaker 4: it was it was a bad idea yeah just leave.
- 29:58Speaker 2: It at that And what about your kids? Like, what
- 30:02Speaker 2: is it?
- 30:03Speaker 3: Did they go to school and people knew who their
- 30:05Speaker 3: dad was or that, that element of like having a
- 30:08Speaker 3: famous parent?
- 30:09Speaker 4: When they were really young, I think they didn't really
- 30:11Speaker 4: understand it. And most kids didn't know.
- 30:14Speaker 3: Right.
- 30:14Speaker 2: It wasn't a show they were watching.
- 30:15Speaker 4: But as they got older, I, I think my daughter
- 30:18Speaker 4: was fine with it because, you know, we do things and,
- 30:20Speaker 4: you know.
- 30:21Speaker 2: It was kind of fun.
- 30:21Speaker 4: It was kind of fun. And they got, my son,
- 30:24Speaker 4: I never really, I think like, I'd show up at
- 30:26Speaker 4: his ball games and like all his teammates would be like,
- 30:28Speaker 4: oh my God, that's Steve Wilkos. And I think he
- 30:31Speaker 4: didn't like that. But now as he's gotten older and
- 30:34Speaker 4: we'll go to, like he's a big Buffalo Bills fan
- 30:37Speaker 4: and I'm friends with Jim Kelly who's, you know, Hall
- 30:39Speaker 4: of Fame quarterback with the Bills and I play in
- 30:42Speaker 4: his golf tournament every year and he had us up
- 30:44Speaker 4: to a football game last year and we sat in
- 30:46Speaker 4: his box. My son's, you know, Jim Kelly's talking to
- 30:48Speaker 4: my son and we're on the field and we go
- 30:50Speaker 4: to ball games and he gets to meet everybody. So
- 30:53Speaker 4: now he's reaping the fruits of, you know, all this
- 30:57Speaker 4: me being who I am. So that he enjoys, but
- 31:00Speaker 4: it's gotta be tough to be like your dad, Steve Wilkos.
- 31:04Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Like, and thank God I
- 31:06Speaker 4: didn't name my dad. Thank God my dad told me this.
- 31:09Speaker 4: He goes, don't name your son after yourself, which was
- 31:12Speaker 4: great advice because now my son would be Steve Wilkos.
- 31:16Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Like, and that's not good.
- 31:17Speaker 3: My dad said that to us too. He was like,
- 31:20Speaker 3: never have a junior.
- 31:22Speaker 4: Yeah. And, Because they don't get, you know, like my dad.
- 31:26Speaker 4: I have a brother named after my dad. And, you know,
- 31:28Speaker 4: my brother's nothing like my dad. And I think maybe
- 31:31Speaker 4: my brother felt like he had to try to live
- 31:33Speaker 4: up to my dad's name, you know, because my dad
- 31:35Speaker 4: was this big, tough guy in the neighborhood. He was
- 31:36Speaker 4: a cop. He was a paratrooper. And that's tough on kids,
- 31:39Speaker 4: you know, to, like, live up to your dad's name,
- 31:41Speaker 4: you know. And so I'm glad I didn't do that
- 31:45Speaker 4: with my son. My son gets to be the person
- 31:47Speaker 4: he's meant to be. He doesn't have to be me.
- 31:51Speaker 4: But it has got to be tough. From the sense
- 31:53Speaker 4: of hearing all the time, your dad's Steve Wilkos. You
- 31:56Speaker 4: know what I mean? And I'm not even that famous. Like,
- 31:58Speaker 4: I'm somewhat famous. But, you know, if you had, like,
- 32:02Speaker 4: a really famous dad, you know what I mean?
- 32:04Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 32:05Speaker 4: Like Michael Jordan, right? Like, his kids are basketball players,
- 32:07Speaker 4: or they were. And, you know, I know the ones
- 32:10Speaker 4: dating Lars Pippen, which is, you know. But anyways.
- 32:15Speaker 2: You don't believe that relationship is going to work?
- 32:17Speaker 4: Well, come on, man. If you're. You know.
- 32:20Speaker 2: Larsa Pippen.
- 32:21Speaker 4: Yeah, come on.
- 32:22Speaker 2: You don't think he wants to be on the Real
- 32:23Speaker 2: Housewives of Miami?
- 32:24Speaker 4: You think Michael Jordan's happy about that? Or Scottie Pippen's
- 32:26Speaker 4: happy about that? Like, nobody's happy about that situation.
- 32:30Speaker 2: Except maybe she.
- 32:30Speaker 4: Weren't they, like, engaged or something now?
- 32:32Speaker 2: I don't know. It's pretty serious.
- 32:34Speaker 4: Yeah, but if you're that guy, what are you doing, man?
- 32:37Speaker 4: Have some fun. You know, do whatever you got to do.
- 32:40Speaker 4: But then move on, man. Get out of that situation.
- 32:43Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 32:43Speaker 4: Like, that's not good.
- 32:44Speaker 2: No, that's not good at all.
- 32:45Speaker 4: But that's my point. Like, you know. having somebody that's
- 32:50Speaker 4: a famous parent, it's gotta be tough. You do get
- 32:52Speaker 4: some perks and benefits and things like that. But overall,
- 32:56Speaker 4: you know, if you're hearing it all the time, oh,
- 32:57Speaker 4: your dad's Steve Wilkos.
- 32:58Speaker 2: I mean, I'm not as famous as you.
- 33:02Speaker 3: And also my kids have a different last name because
- 33:04Speaker 3: I keep.
- 33:05Speaker 2: My maiden name.
- 33:05Speaker 4: But if they know who their mom is.
- 33:06Speaker 3: But, I mean, I just remember one time my, one time,
- 33:12Speaker 3: we were passing Black China's house and she lives in
- 33:15Speaker 3: this neighborhood. And my son just said, mom, Will you
- 33:21Speaker 3: ever get to a point in your career that you
- 33:23Speaker 3: have to have an OnlyFans page?
- 33:26Speaker 2: And I said, never.
- 33:26Speaker 4: We were talking about that this morning.
- 33:28Speaker 2: I said, never. Never. Never. We are fine. No matter
- 33:33Speaker 2: what happens tomorrow, I don't have to do that. But
- 33:35Speaker 2: what if you knew you could make a quarter million
- 33:37Speaker 2: a month?
- 33:38Speaker 4: I'm asking you. Quarter million a month.
- 33:41Speaker 3: No.
- 33:41Speaker 4: Cash you're getting.
- 33:42Speaker 2: No.
- 33:43Speaker 4: You'd still say no.
- 33:44Speaker 3: No.
- 33:45Speaker 4: What if it was a million a month?
- 33:46Speaker 2: No.
- 33:46Speaker 4: You'd still say no. A million bucks, you'd make it
- 33:48Speaker 4: $ 12 million.
- 33:48Speaker 2: No, I'm very happy with my life. I don't feel that.
- 33:51Speaker 3: I'm not that person that's like the ultimate is having
- 33:54Speaker 3: the Juicy Scoop jet.
- 33:56Speaker 2: It's just not where I'm at.
- 33:57Speaker 4: Jet would be nice, though, because Jerry had the jet.
- 34:01Speaker 3: I still think I would rather not have the jet
- 34:03Speaker 3: and then just charter stuff.
- 34:05Speaker 4: I don't know. I'm telling you. I traveled with Jerry
- 34:09Speaker 4: when he became very big, and we had to travel
- 34:11Speaker 4: all the time. We were going to every market in America.
- 34:14Speaker 4: And then he bought a jet. And I mean, I'll
- 34:16Speaker 4: tell you, it was like life changing. It was unbelievable.
- 34:20Speaker 4: It was fantastic.
- 34:21Speaker 2: Well, do you think you're going to get to the
- 34:22Speaker 2: place of a dad?
- 34:23Speaker 4: No, because I'll never make that kind of money.
- 34:25Speaker 3: But yeah, and with my kids, I mean, there was never.
- 34:31Speaker 4: Yeah, the OnlyFans thing. I'm joking around.
- 34:33Speaker 2: I know, but Alarsa has the OnlyFans.
- 34:34Speaker 4: If you're like your husband and like me, I mean,
- 34:37Speaker 4: I joke around. I was teasing my wife this morning.
- 34:39Speaker 4: Maybe you should get OnlyFans. But, like, I would never
- 34:42Speaker 4: want that to.
- 34:42Speaker 2: Happen, obviously.
- 34:44Speaker 5: No, no.
- 34:44Speaker 2: And I don't begrudge anybody that does it. Like, it's fine.
- 34:47Speaker 5: No. Whatever.
- 34:47Speaker 4: You're not doing anything wrong.
- 34:49Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 34:49Speaker 3: I mean, there was even a time where my son
- 34:52Speaker 3: was like, this was embarrassing, but I'll tell you guys
- 34:56Speaker 3: the story. So my son, who's 20, he does help
- 34:59Speaker 3: with all the YouTube stuff, even though he's at ASU. Yeah.
- 35:04Speaker 3: I guess I was filming something off the TV of, like, oh,
- 35:08Speaker 3: my God, look what they're playing right now, like, on stories. Like,
- 35:11Speaker 3: you guys have to turn to Bravo right now. It's
- 35:13Speaker 3: the classic Real Housewives, whatever. And then I went and, like,
- 35:16Speaker 3: went to do an interview. And I did not realize
- 35:18Speaker 3: that when I was filming, the reflection of the TV,
- 35:22Speaker 3: you could.
- 35:23Speaker 2: See my boobs.
- 35:25Speaker 4: What, you didn't have a shirt on?
- 35:26Speaker 2: I guess I didn't really have a shirt on.
- 35:28Speaker 4: Oh, okay. And....
- 35:32Speaker 3: So right away, the fans start like DMing and being, cause.
- 35:35Speaker 2: They're like moms.
- 35:36Speaker 3: So they're like, they know I wasn't trying to do
- 35:38Speaker 3: some thirsty thing. So my son sees it.
- 35:42Speaker 4: All his friends get to see your boobs.
- 35:43Speaker 2: No friends saw it. Nobody cares.
- 35:45Speaker 4: His friends.
- 35:46Speaker 3: I know, but my audience is like 87% women and moms.
- 35:49Speaker 2: It's like, whatever.
- 35:50Speaker 4: But once his friends hear that they can see your boobs.
- 35:53Speaker 2: Well, he took it down.
- 35:54Speaker 4: They're going there.
- 35:55Speaker 2: He took it down.
- 35:56Speaker 3: And then he immediately wrote me and was like, please
- 36:00Speaker 3: be more careful mom when you're filming things.
- 36:02Speaker 2: I told you how to do it on your phone.
- 36:04Speaker 3: And then he's like, and then he's like, cause he's
- 36:07Speaker 3: finance major and he's very smart about money. And he's like, listen,
- 36:12Speaker 3: if this is the kind of content you'd like to pursue,
- 36:15Speaker 3: there is a way we can make it very profitable.
- 36:17Speaker 3: Like he was like joking, but it was, and I
- 36:19Speaker 3: was like, Oh my God. So it, and it was barely,
- 36:22Speaker 3: you really couldn't see anyway, but it was, But I
- 36:25Speaker 3: think like, I understand, I do hear that with like
- 36:28Speaker 3: kids sometimes, even with my kids, they'd be like, no,
- 36:31Speaker 3: you know, I don't want your help or I don't want.
- 36:33Speaker 2: You to do this.
- 36:33Speaker 3: But now when it's like a Juicy Scooper is like, oh,
- 36:37Speaker 3: I can get you with the good tickets at the
- 36:39Speaker 3: ASU USC game.
- 36:41Speaker 2: And then they're like, oh, where's the Juicy Scooper? I'd
- 36:43Speaker 2: love to meet that lovely lady. Like it's all, you know,
- 36:47Speaker 2: they get it. Like they get the perks.
- 36:49Speaker 4: Of the life. But there's two sides to it, right?
- 36:50Speaker 2: Yes, of course.
- 36:51Speaker 4: You got to deal with both.
- 36:53Speaker 3: Yeah. But I mean, I think, what we do is not,
- 36:57Speaker 3: you know, something that causes major, like major controversy.
- 37:02Speaker 4: No, I mean, listen, I've been out for 17 years and,
- 37:05Speaker 4: you know, it's, people are like, I've never had a
- 37:08Speaker 4: problem in public, right? Nobody's ever come up and like, you're,
- 37:11Speaker 4: you know, nothing. Like, people are nice to me. I
- 37:14Speaker 4: walk up. If anybody comes up to me, it's very complimentary.
- 37:17Speaker 4: Nobody comes up and says, you suck.
- 37:19Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 37:19Speaker 4: That never happens. So people are always like, hey, we
- 37:22Speaker 4: love watching the show, you know, this, that. I mean,
- 37:25Speaker 4: one lady, one time I was flying to my uncle's funeral,
- 37:28Speaker 4: and I was in St. Louis, Missouri, catching a flight
- 37:30Speaker 4: to Quincy, Illinois. And this woman's like, oh, you're Steve Wilkos.
- 37:34Speaker 4: You know, I'm checking in. She's the airline person. I said, yeah.
- 37:38Speaker 4: She goes, I don't like your show. I'm like, what
- 37:43Speaker 4: are you doing? Like, I'm paying to be on your company.
- 37:47Speaker 4: I'm like spending money on your company. You're telling me
- 37:49Speaker 4: you don't like the way I earn my living? But
- 37:52Speaker 4: that was like the only time it's ever happened.
- 37:54Speaker 2: I have people come up.
- 37:55Speaker 3: And they, they don't get it, but it's like, it's like,
- 37:58Speaker 3: oh my God, I, you know, you're what's her name.
- 38:00Speaker 2: And I'm like, yes, you're what's her name.
- 38:02Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 38:03Speaker 4: Yes.
- 38:03Speaker 2: I follow you or whatever. I go, oh, thank you.
- 38:06Speaker 3: And then they're like, oh, I just saw Amy Schumer
- 38:09Speaker 3: and she was fabulous.
- 38:10Speaker 2: And then I.
- 38:11Speaker 3: Also went to go see, you know, these three other
- 38:14Speaker 3: female comedians and I'm like, okay, yeah, they're all great.
- 38:18Speaker 3: I'm glad you're supporting female comedians.
- 38:20Speaker 4: Like, Why are you telling me?
- 38:23Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So I'm like, all right. Sometimes people just
- 38:26Speaker 2: don't get it. Or they always say, oh.
- 38:30Speaker 3: My God, hi, can I get a picture? My friends
- 38:32Speaker 3: have no idea who you are. They have no clue,
- 38:36Speaker 3: but I know who you are.
- 38:37Speaker 4: It's like the backhanded compliment.
- 38:40Speaker 2: Or the people will be like, they're rude. They're like,
- 38:43Speaker 2: Who are you? Why are we taking a photo with you?
- 38:45Speaker 2: I'm like, you don't have to take, like, I'm not asking.
- 38:48Speaker 4: I'm not bothering you. You don't have to do anything.
- 38:51Speaker 4: Get out of here. Yeah. People, like, sometimes are not
- 38:55Speaker 4: aware of how they're handling situations.
- 38:57Speaker 2: Yes, and they're just, like, excited or whatever.
- 38:58Speaker 4: You know, it's funny because, like, when I was younger and, like,
- 39:02Speaker 4: when I was on Springer, like, we get a lot
- 39:05Speaker 4: of ballplayers and athletes would come to the show. And
- 39:08Speaker 4: that was really cool for me because I went from
- 39:09Speaker 4: being nobody to, like, I became friends with people that
- 39:12Speaker 4: I idolized when I was a kid, like Pete Rose
- 39:15Speaker 4: and people like that, Ernie Banks. But what really changed
- 39:20Speaker 4: it for me was we were in an airport in
- 39:23Speaker 4: Martha's Vineyard, and I'm sitting, we're waiting to catch a
- 39:27Speaker 4: flight back to New York, and I'm sitting there and
- 39:31Speaker 4: Bill Murray is like standing in front of me staring
- 39:33Speaker 4: at me and I look up and I oh my
- 39:36Speaker 4: god it's Bill Murray and he looks at me goes
- 39:38Speaker 4: I know you I get up and I go yeah
- 39:40Speaker 4: my name's Steve Wilkos I you know I'm from I'm
- 39:43Speaker 4: from Chicago too because he's from Chicago And he goes, no, no, no,
- 39:46Speaker 4: you got a TV show. And I said, yeah. And
- 39:48Speaker 4: I said, oh my God. Me and my mom, when
- 39:50Speaker 4: we were kids, we'd watch you. And so we started talking.
- 39:54Speaker 4: He was very nice, very gracious. Meets my wife. Meets
- 39:57Speaker 4: my kids. They didn't know who the hell he was
- 39:59Speaker 4: because they were small at the time. But they might
- 40:01Speaker 4: not even know who he is still. But me and
- 40:04Speaker 4: my wife were very nice. He was a very nice guy.
- 40:06Speaker 4: And I said, hey, Bill, would you mind taking a picture?
- 40:08Speaker 4: He goes, nah. He goes, you're on vacation. I'm on vacation.
- 40:12Speaker 4: He goes, let's leave it at that. And You know what?
- 40:15Speaker 4: Ever since then, I said, I'm not asking to take
- 40:17Speaker 4: a picture with anybody ever again. Like, that's it. Like,
- 40:21Speaker 4: that right there just said, nah, you know, we're in
- 40:23Speaker 4: this business. Nobody wants to be bothered, so I'm never
- 40:26Speaker 4: going to do it again. And that was it.
- 40:28Speaker 2: That's a really good point.
- 40:29Speaker 3: I'm trying to think of the last– I don't think
- 40:31Speaker 3: I really do it anymore either. Like, if I see
- 40:33Speaker 3: somebody or, like, we're out at dinner and you see
- 40:35Speaker 3: somebody there and you're.
- 40:36Speaker 2: Like, oh, hi, you know. I kind of– I, yeah.
- 40:39Speaker 3: Like what's it, what's it going to do for me?
- 40:42Speaker 4: Like I said, it was for me, I was a cop.
- 40:45Speaker 4: You know what I mean? Like it was funny. My
- 40:47Speaker 4: electrician came over the other day and he was in
- 40:50Speaker 4: the Marines the same time I was, and we were both,
- 40:52Speaker 4: I didn't know him back then, but we were both
- 40:54Speaker 4: in Okinawa, Japan together at the same time. And when
- 40:57Speaker 4: I was there, this 1983, the happy days cast came
- 41:01Speaker 4: over to, you know, the USO and they were, playing
- 41:04Speaker 4: softball at all the different bases. And I remember like,
- 41:06Speaker 4: there was the Fonz and Richie Cunningham and, you know, Mrs.
- 41:11Speaker 4: C and, you know, like, like those were probably the
- 41:13Speaker 4: first celebrities I ever saw. Like, I didn't get to
- 41:15Speaker 4: meet them, but I got, you know, it was very
- 41:17Speaker 4: close to, you know, seeing celebrities, you know? So like,
- 41:20Speaker 4: that was like, oh, wow. You know? So then when
- 41:22Speaker 4: I got on the Springer show and then, you know,
- 41:24Speaker 4: I'm meeting, you know, Magic Johnson and Cher and, you know,
- 41:28Speaker 4: all these people like, oh my God, I was watching
- 41:30Speaker 4: ever since I was a kid. And like, I'm a
- 41:32Speaker 4: huge fan of these people. you know, you want to
- 41:34Speaker 4: take pictures with them, but then you realize like, you know,
- 41:38Speaker 4: people then start wanting pictures with you and you say,
- 41:40Speaker 4: you know, not that, and I never say no to everybody.
- 41:43Speaker 4: I've never said no to anybody, but like, you kind
- 41:45Speaker 4: of realize like when you're both celebrities, it's like, ah,
- 41:47Speaker 4: what's the point? You know, like don't bother somebody that,
- 41:50Speaker 4: you know.
- 41:51Speaker 3: Right.
- 41:52Speaker 4: And it's like, if they're cool, like, you know, I
- 41:56Speaker 4: do Instagram and I'm like, you know, building up my
- 41:58Speaker 4: Instagram and all that. So it's like, it's nice to
- 42:01Speaker 4: put a picture, like, Yesterday I took a picture with
- 42:04Speaker 4: Toni Braxton.
- 42:05Speaker 2: She was super nice.
- 42:06Speaker 4: You know, but other than that.
- 42:08Speaker 2: Well, you better post our picture.
- 42:10Speaker 4: You got it. But I'm never like if I'm out somewhere,
- 42:14Speaker 4: I'm never going to ask anybody for a photo.
- 42:17Speaker 3: Now, do you ever look back like at your life
- 42:21Speaker 3: and was there anything as a kid? And you mentioned
- 42:24Speaker 3: you remember seeing the Happy Days people. Like, was there
- 42:27Speaker 3: ever something like almost subconsciously that you're like, I am
- 42:31Speaker 3: shocked that I'm here right now, but I did always
- 42:33Speaker 3: have a desire or I always thought about being like
- 42:37Speaker 3: something other than.
- 42:38Speaker 4: Well, I wanted to be a baseball player. Oh, okay. I,
- 42:40Speaker 4: you know, I grew up right down the street from
- 42:41Speaker 4: Wrigley Field. I played baseball from the time I can
- 42:44Speaker 4: remember all the way through high school. And I wanted
- 42:46Speaker 4: to be a baseball player. And growing up, you'd think like, oh,
- 42:50Speaker 4: I'm going to be a major league baseball player and
- 42:52Speaker 4: I'm going to be famous and I'm going to make
- 42:54Speaker 4: a ton of money. Well. then you turn anything, you
- 42:56Speaker 4: realize that's not going to happen. So, you know, I became,
- 43:01Speaker 4: you know, like nobody becomes a Marine and a cop.
- 43:03Speaker 4: I think you're going to be famous. Like that's never
- 43:05Speaker 4: going to happen. And if you become famous as a cop,
- 43:07Speaker 4: it's usually for the wrong reasons, you know what I mean?
- 43:10Speaker 4: Like you're involved in some bad stuff, you know what
- 43:12Speaker 4: I mean? So, but I, it's funny because I remember
- 43:16Speaker 4: when I was a rookie police officer, there was some, uh,
- 43:20Speaker 4: TV or film producer that were asking to take pictures
- 43:23Speaker 4: of cops. Cause they're like, Oh, we're just looking for
- 43:25Speaker 4: like a new face. And so I was like, Oh
- 43:27Speaker 4: my God, what if I got picked? You know, of
- 43:29Speaker 4: course I didn't get picked, but you're thinking like, Ooh,
- 43:32Speaker 4: like to be famous, you know, like, and then I never,
- 43:36Speaker 4: I never tried out to be in TV. I never auditioned.
- 43:39Speaker 4: I never, you know, I still remember being like, we
- 43:43Speaker 4: were doing Austin powers too. It was me, Jerry, we're
- 43:45Speaker 4: out in L.A. And they give us this big, uh,
- 43:47Speaker 4: RV and it's loaded with food and drinks. And, and
- 43:51Speaker 4: I remember looking out the window at RV and there
- 43:52Speaker 4: was all these extras lined up like cattle in this
- 43:56Speaker 4: line waiting to do that. And I'm like, I'm here.
- 43:59Speaker 4: I'm getting a screen credit. Never asked for it. Like,
- 44:03Speaker 4: and then I got my own show. I never tried
- 44:05Speaker 4: to get my own TV show. Never wanted my own
- 44:07Speaker 4: TV show. I just got my own TV show. So
- 44:10Speaker 4: in that regard, I've been very, very fortunate. Um, So, yeah,
- 44:14Speaker 4: I thought when you're a kid, you think, well, I
- 44:16Speaker 4: want to be a baseball player. That's how I'd be famous.
- 44:18Speaker 4: That wasn't going to work out. So, you know.
- 44:22Speaker 3: No, I just say that just because when I interview
- 44:24Speaker 3: people that are like reality stars or whatever that have
- 44:26Speaker 3: really made a good career out of it, but they
- 44:29Speaker 3: weren't pursuing acting like I did before.
- 44:32Speaker 4: I never pursued anything to.
- 44:33Speaker 2: Be in TV.
- 44:34Speaker 3: But they do have stuff like that where they're like, oh,
- 44:38Speaker 3: I was obsessed with Madonna and I took singing and
- 44:40Speaker 3: dancing lessons, but then I got married and I was
- 44:42Speaker 3: really happy being a wife, but then the housewives came.
- 44:44Speaker 4: Yeah, I was never obsessed with anybody but sports figures.
- 44:47Speaker 3: But there is something in the personality that when the
- 44:49Speaker 3: opportunity comes- they really are meant to be kind of
- 44:54Speaker 3: a bigger version of themselves and like, and out.
- 44:58Speaker 4: Well, I never was a wallflower. Like, you know, I
- 45:00Speaker 4: was always kind of an outgoing personality, always kind of
- 45:03Speaker 4: spoke my mind, said things that I probably shouldn't have. So,
- 45:08Speaker 4: you know, that certainly helps in this business, right? Because
- 45:10Speaker 4: if you don't have personality, you're not going to get
- 45:12Speaker 4: very far. So that, that helped. And, but being a
- 45:15Speaker 4: policeman really helped too, because like, it gives you confidence and,
- 45:19Speaker 4: you know, you just, you don't, take shit from anybody,
- 45:22Speaker 4: you know, or at least I didn't, you know, and,
- 45:25Speaker 4: you know, you get on TV and you're not intimidated
- 45:27Speaker 4: by anything. Like some people, oh, this is your big
- 45:28Speaker 4: moment and everything, but you're like, eh, I've done much
- 45:30Speaker 4: harder things.
- 45:31Speaker 3: Yeah, did you always want to be, you know, like,
- 45:33Speaker 3: I know you said baseball, but did you always want.
- 45:35Speaker 4: To be a cop? Oh, yeah, when I was a
- 45:36Speaker 4: little kid, I played with G.I. Joe's.
- 45:37Speaker 2: And you wanted to be a cop, too?
- 45:38Speaker 4: Oh, yeah, I wanted to be my dad.
- 45:40Speaker 2: Okay, yeah.
- 45:41Speaker 4: So, yeah, I mean, and I remember, like, in high school.
- 45:43Speaker 2: And was your, is your dad here still?
- 45:45Speaker 4: No, he passed away a couple years ago.
- 45:46Speaker 2: But he was able to see your success?
- 45:48Speaker 4: Oh, my dad passed away. So my dad lived in
- 45:50Speaker 4: Palm Harbor, Florida, right outside Tampa. And Tampa at the time,
- 45:55Speaker 4: I think I heard twice a day now, but there
- 45:57Speaker 4: was a time I heard three times a day. And
- 45:59Speaker 4: my wife can attest this. We would go down and
- 46:01Speaker 4: visit my parents and my dad watched the show three
- 46:05Speaker 4: times a day and he was losing his hearing. So
- 46:08Speaker 4: it was like a jet listening. And I'm like, come on, dad,
- 46:12Speaker 4: can you put something else on? I'm like, I don't
- 46:14Speaker 4: want to hear myself screaming for three hours. So, but
- 46:17Speaker 4: my dad, like, And wherever we went, we'd be at
- 46:20Speaker 4: a restaurant. I was like, you know, my son is Steve,
- 46:22Speaker 4: you know. And they would carry T-shirts in their car
- 46:26Speaker 4: and they'd pass them out. So I said I had
- 46:28Speaker 4: like two old publicists, you know, down in Florida, you know,
- 46:31Speaker 4: telling everybody who their son was.
- 46:33Speaker 2: But I love that.
- 46:34Speaker 3: My parents were super proud, too. And I I mean,
- 46:38Speaker 3: it's it isn't a little embarrassing.
- 46:41Speaker 2: Like I would.
- 46:42Speaker 3: I'd be doing, so while I was pursuing acting and everything,
- 46:45Speaker 3: I was a realtor with my parents, like residential realtors.
- 46:48Speaker 3: And we would be like trying to get a listing,
- 46:50Speaker 3: but my mom couldn't control herself. And she'd be like,
- 46:53Speaker 3: you know, she was on Malcolm in the Middle last night.
- 46:55Speaker 3: And I'm like, mom, we need to act like we
- 46:58Speaker 3: are real realtors. Like we're up against these other people,
- 47:00Speaker 3: you know, but I was like, you're ruining the presentation,
- 47:03Speaker 3: but she couldn't help it.
- 47:04Speaker 2: So I love that. That's really sweet.
- 47:07Speaker 4: And then my mom would do this. We'd be out
- 47:09Speaker 4: in public and she'd say my name real loud.
- 47:11Speaker 2: Steve!
- 47:12Speaker 4: Steve's the one people would look. Oh, you know, and
- 47:14Speaker 4: I'm like, Mom, would you please stop? You know, so.
- 47:18Speaker 2: Oh, I love that so much.
- 47:20Speaker 4: Oh, my mom would get so mad if nobody recognized me. Like,
- 47:22Speaker 4: we'd be out in public.
- 47:24Speaker 2: Yeah, like, what a waste of an evening out.
- 47:25Speaker 4: Right, right. And then, like, somebody recognizes you, she's like, oh, okay,
- 47:28Speaker 4: I feel better now.
- 47:31Speaker 2: Oh my God. I love that. Now, now did your sibling,
- 47:35Speaker 2: you only have one brother?
- 47:36Speaker 4: I have a brother and two sisters.
- 47:37Speaker 3: Was anybody, is everyone loving that you're famous or are
- 47:41Speaker 3: some people a little jealous?
- 47:42Speaker 4: Not jealous or anything. I think they just, they roll
- 47:46Speaker 4: with it. You know what I mean? Like for them,
- 47:48Speaker 4: it's just, I mean, I think they're happy for me,
- 47:51Speaker 4: but I mean, there's no jealousy. That's good. You know,
- 47:54Speaker 4: my siblings are all to varying degrees. They've had their
- 47:57Speaker 4: own successes and, their families and they're happy in life.
- 48:00Speaker 4: So they're not looking at me jealous of anything.
- 48:03Speaker 2: That's good.
- 48:04Speaker 3: And what is your advice to staying happily married for
- 48:09Speaker 3: 23 years to the kids that are listening at home?
- 48:12Speaker 4: Find the right person. That's key. Because like I said,
- 48:14Speaker 4: I was married before and I was miserable, miserable, hated.
- 48:18Speaker 4: I mean, like, you know, but like when you meet
- 48:21Speaker 4: the right person and you think a lot of like, like,
- 48:25Speaker 4: everything that we do in life, like whether, you know,
- 48:27Speaker 4: big financial things like a house or we're so like this, man,
- 48:31Speaker 4: we make decisions fast and we get along and we,
- 48:35Speaker 4: you know, we, we just, I mean, I have no,
- 48:38Speaker 4: we like last night, we had so much fun. It's
- 48:41Speaker 4: just the two of us. And we're laughing because we
- 48:44Speaker 4: realize we're changing and we're growing older. And like, you know, we,
- 48:48Speaker 4: like last night we're staying at the Mayburn, Mayburn. And,
- 48:54Speaker 4: I smoke cigars. So she's like, Oh, there's a cigar place.
- 48:57Speaker 4: They got a cigar bar, you know? And so like,
- 49:01Speaker 4: this is so crazy. And we, you know, we're both
- 49:04Speaker 4: come from nothing, right? Like, you know, we grew up
- 49:07Speaker 4: on my grandparents, uh, building in the little apartment and
- 49:11Speaker 4: she grew up in a shoe box in Detroit. So
- 49:13Speaker 4: we came from nothing. So like, sometimes it's hard to
- 49:18Speaker 4: get that mentality of always saving money and not spending money.
- 49:21Speaker 2: I totally can relate because I'm the same.
- 49:23Speaker 3: Right.
- 49:24Speaker 4: So like last night we're staying at the Bay Board.
- 49:25Speaker 4: They have a cigar bar and she goes, do you
- 49:28Speaker 4: want to go there? She goes up, oh, can we?
- 49:30Speaker 4: And he goes, well, it's $ 100 minimum. I looked, I'm like,
- 49:34Speaker 4: we're going to bed. It's like eight 30. She goes,
- 49:38Speaker 4: it's a hundred dollars. You know? And I'm like, no way.
- 49:40Speaker 4: Let's just go to our room. I'm like, yeah, you're right.
- 49:43Speaker 4: It's a hundred bucks. What's the big deal. But I'm
- 49:45Speaker 4: just like a hundred dollars. And then like, we're laughing
- 49:48Speaker 4: this morning because she wakes up. She's like, is it
- 49:51Speaker 4: cold out?
- 49:51Speaker 3: You know?
- 49:52Speaker 4: And I go, man, we are becoming old people, like
- 49:55Speaker 4: shaking our face. Is that cold out? And, but so that,
- 49:59Speaker 4: so the key is we make each other laugh. I
- 50:02Speaker 4: want to spend like, When she, like, we're coming out here,
- 50:05Speaker 4: and Sarah said, hey, we're going to L.A., I go,
- 50:08Speaker 4: you got to come with, you know, because I don't
- 50:09Speaker 4: want to go to L.A. for three days and not
- 50:10Speaker 4: be with you, you know. And she came out, and
- 50:12Speaker 4: I said, man, I'd be miserable out here if she
- 50:14Speaker 4: wasn't here.
- 50:15Speaker 2: So, and she's here.
- 50:16Speaker 3: I think the same thing. Like, I think, you know, no,
- 50:20Speaker 3: not every day is easy. I mean, for my marriage,
- 50:23Speaker 3: not every day is easy.
- 50:24Speaker 2: But, like. We do, we are on the same page
- 50:27Speaker 2: about all those things.
- 50:28Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 50:28Speaker 2: Like, you know, like a house, a vacation, whatever.
- 50:31Speaker 3: And spending, well, I would spend more if it was
- 50:35Speaker 3: up to me. He's more conservative. But, like, finally, it's
- 50:39Speaker 3: like a little bit. I would have an argument like that. Like,
- 50:41Speaker 3: I'd be like, no, I am going to get the
- 50:44Speaker 3: better glass of wine now. I've gotten the shittier glass
- 50:46Speaker 3: of wine for 25 years. And I'm like, what is
- 50:50Speaker 3: $ 10 more going to do? If I'm only going to
- 50:52Speaker 3: have one glass of wine, I want it to be Rumbauer,
- 50:54Speaker 3: and I want it to be a delicious experience.
- 50:57Speaker 4: Last night, we're at Mr. Charles, and she ordered a
- 51:02Speaker 4: bottle of Evian water. Was it Evian or? Fiji. Fiji.
- 51:06Speaker 4: And she's like, sucking it at that, because we paid
- 51:10Speaker 4: for this.
- 51:11Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, I know. I can't leave.
- 51:13Speaker 4: And we're not even paying for it, because the show's
- 51:15Speaker 4: going to pay for the dinner. But she's like, But
- 51:17Speaker 4: that's the old school mentality that's grown up with nothing.
- 51:20Speaker 4: It's like, you can't leave anything to waste.
- 51:22Speaker 3: The doggy bags. Our kids make fun of us. They're like, mom,
- 51:27Speaker 3: if you take those four pieces of gnocchi home with you,
- 51:30Speaker 3: I'm going to kill you.
- 51:32Speaker 2: You're disgusting. I'm like, I will eat it tomorrow. And
- 51:34Speaker 2: I am bringing it home.
- 51:35Speaker 4: But there's nothing wrong with that. In our house, we
- 51:38Speaker 4: moved from Illinois and we bought a nice house in Connecticut.
- 51:42Speaker 4: And we had this disgusting floor mat that like was
- 51:46Speaker 4: in a, that would be like in your dentist's office.
- 51:49Speaker 4: It was just like this black that did not go
- 51:52Speaker 4: in our house law. And we had that thing for years.
- 51:55Speaker 4: And finally somebody came to our house like, what is this? Like,
- 51:58Speaker 4: this is like being a doctor's or a professional office.
- 52:01Speaker 4: And we're like, oh, do you have an apartment here
- 52:03Speaker 4: at our house? Like, finally we got rid of the
- 52:06Speaker 4: damn thing. But like, that's like our mentality, man. Like,
- 52:09Speaker 4: it just, you know, and don't get me wrong. You know,
- 52:12Speaker 4: we had a lake house. We have a very nice
- 52:14Speaker 4: house we live in. You know, our kids get basically
- 52:17Speaker 4: whatever they want. We spend money on ourselves. But we
- 52:20Speaker 4: do sock a lot of our money away. We always
- 52:22Speaker 4: have because in this business, you never know.
- 52:24Speaker 2: When it's going to come to an end.
- 52:26Speaker 4: But sometimes you're still like, oh, you know, save that
- 52:31Speaker 4: $ 3 because, you know, I'm not going to spend that $ 3,
- 52:33Speaker 4: you know. So it's hard to get that out of
- 52:37Speaker 4: your system when you grow up with nothing. Right. You know?
- 52:39Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 52:40Speaker 4: And I think that's a good thing because– I've known
- 52:43Speaker 4: a lot of people in this business, whether it was producers,
- 52:46Speaker 4: executive producers, talent that when it ended, they're like going
- 52:51Speaker 4: to their friends with their hat in their hand. Like,
- 52:53Speaker 4: can you help me out?
- 52:54Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 52:54Speaker 4: Well, that's never going to happen to us. Right. Once
- 52:57Speaker 4: this is over, I'm not borrowing money or I'm not
- 52:59Speaker 4: going to need money from anybody. Like we've been very
- 53:02Speaker 4: smart all these years. Like for a long time, we
- 53:04Speaker 4: wouldn't buy anything unless it was an appreciable asset. You
- 53:07Speaker 4: know what I mean? Like, Unless it was going to
- 53:09Speaker 4: make us money, we did not spend that on that.
- 53:12Speaker 4: So we've been very good. And like I said, I
- 53:15Speaker 4: just never want to be in a position where I
- 53:17Speaker 4: have to worry about money. So the point is that'll
- 53:20Speaker 4: never happen. So the day I die, I'll worry about money.
- 53:23Speaker 3: Yeah, but getting back to what is great is, yeah,
- 53:28Speaker 3: and it's important that then when your kids do get older,
- 53:31Speaker 3: you realize more and more it's just going to be
- 53:33Speaker 3: the two of you. The friendship and the fact that
- 53:36Speaker 3: you can laugh and have something to talk about at dinner. And,
- 53:38Speaker 3: you know, people always say, you know, oh, it must
- 53:41Speaker 3: be hard to work with your spouse and it's hard
- 53:43Speaker 3: to work with your spouse and everything. But then I
- 53:45Speaker 3: thought about it in a positive way that I never
- 53:47Speaker 3: had thought about before. I'm like, yes, but if you
- 53:51Speaker 3: work together, you do always have a reason to be
- 53:55Speaker 3: with each other and you do always have something to
- 53:57Speaker 3: talk about. So sometimes it would be hard where you're like,
- 53:59Speaker 3: we've got to turn it off. We've got to turn
- 54:02Speaker 3: off the talking about the business, but then... That does
- 54:05Speaker 3: really kind of tie you forever.
- 54:07Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 54:07Speaker 4: And you do talk about things like that. Like we'll
- 54:10Speaker 4: get out and we talk about the shifting things in
- 54:12Speaker 4: our business and certain things that are going on. But
- 54:16Speaker 4: the other thing is, you know, we work together, you know,
- 54:20Speaker 4: obviously live together. But like during our regular days when
- 54:24Speaker 4: we're not working, you know, I usually play golf in
- 54:26Speaker 4: the morning. She's doing her Zumba or her working out.
- 54:30Speaker 4: So we spend time apart.
- 54:33Speaker 2: You know what I mean? Yeah, so do we. My
- 54:35Speaker 2: husband's golfing right now.
- 54:36Speaker 3: He set you up and he's like, I'm at him,
- 54:38Speaker 3: I've got to go now.
- 54:38Speaker 4: Right, so, and she, you know, we have our things. Like,
- 54:42Speaker 4: she'll do that and then we come home and then
- 54:45Speaker 4: the rest of the day she's pretty much busy. I'm
- 54:48Speaker 4: snoozing and reading the paper on the couch or my chair.
- 54:51Speaker 4: But then at night we're together, right? Like, we watch
- 54:54Speaker 4: our shows, we're together, like, so... You know, we have
- 54:57Speaker 4: our interests, you know, that we'll do our own things.
- 55:01Speaker 4: But we're together every day, you know. And like I said,
- 55:04Speaker 4: when I travel, if she's not with me, I catch
- 55:07Speaker 4: the first flight back. Like, if she wasn't with me,
- 55:09Speaker 4: I'd be flying back tonight. But we're going to spend,
- 55:12Speaker 4: she's going to see one of her friends, and so
- 55:13Speaker 4: we're going to fly back tomorrow. But if she wasn't here,
- 55:16Speaker 4: I'd be first flight out of here right after this interview.
- 55:19Speaker 4: I'd be gone. But she's here, and I'm glad because
- 55:22Speaker 4: I don't want to be without her.
- 55:24Speaker 2: Well, I love that you came. You're a total delight.
- 55:28Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 55:28Speaker 3: I'm glad I got to meet your wife and everybody.
- 55:31Speaker 3: So tell everybody where they, if they, maybe they've never
- 55:34Speaker 3: really watched the show before and why they should be
- 55:37Speaker 3: checking it out now.
- 55:38Speaker 4: Well, you should watch it because you want to keep
- 55:40Speaker 4: me employed for at least four more years so I
- 55:42Speaker 4: get my son through college. So very least, even if
- 55:44Speaker 4: you don't like the show, just watch the show. But no,
- 55:47Speaker 4: the show, listen, we do a different show than anybody
- 55:49Speaker 4: else does on TV. Most daytime talk is celebrities and
- 55:53Speaker 4: talking about their latest projects. We do a show where
- 55:56Speaker 4: people are looking for answers and looking for justice, and
- 55:58Speaker 4: we try to deliver that to them. We do a
- 56:01Speaker 4: show that is very impactful. But we're a syndicated show,
- 56:05Speaker 4: so you've got to go to SteveWilkos.com. You can check
- 56:08Speaker 4: your local listings. But if you go to SteveWilkos.com, you
- 56:11Speaker 4: punch in where you live, and they'll tell you where
- 56:14Speaker 4: to watch our show.
- 56:15Speaker 2: And what's your Instagram since you're going.
- 56:17Speaker 4: To start working the gram? There's the Steve Wilkos Show Instagram,
- 56:21Speaker 4: but I start personal. And I really just did it because, like,
- 56:25Speaker 4: You know, Fergie Jenkins, who was a pitcher for the Cubs,
- 56:27Speaker 4: he's in the Hall of Fame. He sent me a
- 56:28Speaker 4: box of guys. I'm like, wow, that's pretty cool. Like
- 56:30Speaker 4: this Instagram is pretty nice. So like, you know, so
- 56:34Speaker 4: get some stuff and, you know, you get to meet
- 56:36Speaker 4: people and people kind of get to see a more
- 56:39Speaker 4: personal side of my life with the Instagram. So it's
- 56:43Speaker 4: Steve J Wilkos. You know, if you go on Instagram,
- 56:46Speaker 4: it's Steve J Wilkos. Awesome.
- 56:47Speaker 2: Well, thank you so much.
- 56:49Speaker 4: And I won't pay the $ 14 for the blue checkmark.
- 56:52Speaker 4: I'm like, no.
- 56:53Speaker 2: Oh, for Twitter?
- 56:53Speaker 4: For Instagram.
- 56:54Speaker 2: Oh, I already have my checkbook.
- 56:56Speaker 4: Right. They're like, oh, you're verified.
- 56:58Speaker 2: I didn't even know that just started.
- 57:01Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 57:01Speaker 4: And I'm like, no, I'm not paying for it.
- 57:02Speaker 2: No, why would you?
- 57:04Speaker 4: 14 bucks a month. That's $ 147 a year.
- 57:07Speaker 2: Absolutely not. Put your foot down.
- 57:09Speaker 4: I'm like, you believe it's me or not? I don't care.
- 57:11Speaker 3: Wait, so wait, did you do the $ 100 cigar or
- 57:13Speaker 3: you didn't?
- 57:15Speaker 4: No, we're going to do it tonight, though. I think
- 57:18Speaker 4: you should. It's $ 100 to get in. But you've got
- 57:21Speaker 4: to spend $ 100 minimum.
- 57:21Speaker 2: But you can get a cocktail. You can get a
- 57:23Speaker 2: cocktail and a cigar.
- 57:24Speaker 4: Or dessert. But first, I heard $ 100 just to walk
- 57:28Speaker 4: into a place. I'm like, I've never.
- 57:29Speaker 3: Spent $ 100. Listen, the drinks are going to be at
- 57:32Speaker 3: least $ 25, if not more. So you're going to each one.
- 57:35Speaker 3: And then the cigar, you'll make it.
- 57:36Speaker 4: Well, a cigar is probably $ 30.
- 57:37Speaker 2: Yeah, you're going to make it.
- 57:38Speaker 4: No problem.
- 57:39Speaker 2: Oh, thank God we.
- 57:40Speaker 4: Figured this out. So we're going to do it.
- 57:41Speaker 2: We saved the trip.
- 57:42Speaker 4: We were impressed. So, like, that's what I'm saying. Like,
- 57:44Speaker 4: we're in bed by, like, 8.30. Like, what are we
- 57:46Speaker 4: doing now? You know.
- 57:49Speaker 2: Love it. Thank you.
- 57:51Speaker 4: Thanks for having me.
- 57:53Speaker 2: The car is beautiful. Where did you end up going
- 57:55Speaker 2: for it? This exclusive place that Dad has connections with.
- 57:59Speaker 1: They have more cars for more dealerships than, like, anywhere else.
- 58:01Speaker 2: You have to put me in touch.
- 58:03Speaker 3: What's it called?
- 58:04Speaker 2: It's Dunaidial.
- 58:06Speaker 4: Where?
- 58:07Speaker 2: Dunaidial. There's an accent on the E. Do you mean... Yes,
- 58:12Speaker 2: I got it on Done Deal Cars. Lift, please. You're
- 58:15Speaker 2: going past Kimmage. Oh, Kimmage.
- 58:18Speaker 5: No.
- 58:19Speaker 2: Done Deal Cars.
- 58:20Speaker 1: You couldn't possibly go anywhere else.
