- 0:07Speaker 1: Hello, and welcome to No Dribble. The red eyes, the headaches,
- 0:13Speaker 1: the exhaustion of the weekend. That was. What an extraordinary
- 0:18Speaker 1: weekend for our sport, and what an extraordinary weekend for
- 0:21Speaker 1: those of us who support it. My name's Carolyn Swandell.
- 0:24Speaker 1: Welcome to No Dribble, the podcast where we talk about netball.
- 0:27Speaker 1: We talk about so much more, but I got to
- 0:28Speaker 1: tell you this episode, we're going to be talking a
- 0:30Speaker 1: lot about netball. And I am joined in studio.
- 0:34Speaker 2: By kath Cox, who actually doesn't have red eyes today.
- 0:37Speaker 2: I had a good twelve hour NAPP last night, Fresh
- 0:41Speaker 2: Good yesterday, different story however, and also joined by and.
- 0:45Speaker 3: Liz Ellis, and I am still under the bus that
- 0:48Speaker 3: hit me.
- 0:49Speaker 1: Yeah, I'm not surprised. You must be well, actually both
- 0:52Speaker 1: of you must be absolutely wrecked.
- 0:54Speaker 2: It was a big weekend, but I didn't have to
- 0:56Speaker 2: deal with just you had a big day on Saturday
- 0:59Speaker 2: and that luncheon is I mean, we spoke about it
- 1:02Speaker 2: last year, didn't we. Trying to do your job, but
- 1:03Speaker 2: you're also trying to be a netball legend, and it's
- 1:06Speaker 2: tough in a room with nine hundred people, there's nowhere
- 1:09Speaker 2: to do so you know.
- 1:11Speaker 3: What, like it beats the hell out of no one
- 1:14Speaker 3: caring about you, so I can't.
- 1:16Speaker 4: I'm not going to win. Like it's lovely to be loved,
- 1:18Speaker 4: so I'll take that.
- 1:19Speaker 3: But yeah, it's a big weekend and I got to
- 1:22Speaker 3: say the stuff that goes on behind the scenes that
- 1:25Speaker 3: you don't see. So I left the venue after the
- 1:28Speaker 3: Grand Final on Saturday night at eleven thirty, and there
- 1:32Speaker 3: was still a whole team from Netball Australia who you know,
- 1:36Speaker 3: don't regularly work in events, like people who work in
- 1:40Speaker 3: finance and pr and like everyone like you know, coaching
- 1:47Speaker 3: are all there pulling their weight, packing up, cleaning up,
- 1:50Speaker 3: moving things. Like there is a whole team of people
- 1:53Speaker 3: who go above and beyond on the day and it's
- 1:56Speaker 3: just an amazing thing that our little sport, Like we've
- 1:59Speaker 3: only got eighty full time employees at Netball Australia and
- 2:03Speaker 3: I'm just so proud of them. Stacy West and her
- 2:05Speaker 3: team are just amazing, like to deliver something like that, Like,
- 2:09Speaker 3: you know, there was a Grand Final lunch of you know,
- 2:12Speaker 3: eight hundred people. Every corporate suite was sold out. There
- 2:17Speaker 3: was the Mixed Netball Social Club, which was another event
- 2:22Speaker 3: before the Grand Fire.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Yes, that's where I went and had too many party pies.
- 2:27Speaker 3: No, you know there was there was like the inner sanctums,
- 2:32Speaker 3: so there was like an amazing amount of work goes
- 2:35Speaker 3: into an event like that and just to sit back
- 2:38Speaker 3: over the last sevy six hours and go, wow, it's
- 2:40Speaker 3: extraordinary and it really has proved.
- 2:43Speaker 4: Like you could just have a flip through the papers today.
- 2:46Speaker 3: You know, there's some really good sort of game analysis,
- 2:49Speaker 3: but there's also a bit of business analysis and some
- 2:52Speaker 3: recognition that the sport is telling a good story and
- 2:55Speaker 3: we've got big ambitions, so it certainly is worth it.
- 2:58Speaker 4: But yeah, anyway, you feel like you.
- 3:01Speaker 3: Got smake by bus on Monday and I've had to
- 3:04Speaker 3: come home yesterday and I've been out doing my grocery
- 3:06Speaker 3: shoping this morning, so you know, the rest of the
- 3:07Speaker 3: world doesn't, oh, oh.
- 3:08Speaker 1: My god, good work.
- 3:10Speaker 2: Yeah, Monday mornings. I've just done mine as well.
- 3:13Speaker 3: And then Matthew and I've just had a meeting about
- 3:15Speaker 3: like logistics for kids, and he's got like he's we laugh.
- 3:18Speaker 4: He's on the committee of.
- 3:20Speaker 3: The local rugby club, so he's got a committee meeting tonight.
- 3:22Speaker 3: Everyone's got rugby selections like you get home and it's
- 3:26Speaker 3: like right, there's no rest, It's just like, oh, we
- 3:28Speaker 3: go one. Are the logistics with this week? And where
- 3:30Speaker 3: am I driving someone for the rest of the weekend.
- 3:33Speaker 4: You wouldn't have it any other way.
- 3:34Speaker 2: Are you home for a minute now?
- 3:35Speaker 1: Though?
- 3:36Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm home for like a week, oh lord, maybe
- 3:41Speaker 4: even two.
- 3:41Speaker 3: But I bought myself a new carry on bag, like
- 3:43Speaker 3: a new like a light fancies fancy carry on bag,
- 3:46Speaker 3: because I have been using for the last five years
- 3:49Speaker 3: a bag that I bought it Kmart and it served
- 3:52Speaker 3: me well, but the handle died. I was like, oh,
- 3:55Speaker 3: I've got a big weekend this weekend, I'll buy it.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And I bought it with about ten days. Spam was waiting,
- 4:00Speaker 3: and I was waiting.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Anyway. I got home on Sunday night and it just
- 4:03Speaker 4: turned up, So go me. I've got nothing to take
- 4:06Speaker 4: it now.
- 4:07Speaker 2: Oh no, we'll not for two weeks. Anyway, It'll keep well.
- 4:11Speaker 1: I travel with carry on everywhere. We did a month
- 4:14Speaker 1: in Europe this year, I did carry We all did
- 4:16Speaker 1: carry on. We did three weeks in Korea a couple
- 4:18Speaker 1: of years ago. All did carry on. I haven't checked
- 4:20Speaker 1: a bag in years.
- 4:21Speaker 2: They're warm climates. How would you go if you had
- 4:24Speaker 2: to go to a cold.
- 4:25Speaker 1: Climate Europe in April? Have you been to London on
- 4:27Speaker 1: the third of April this summer summer is June for
- 4:31Speaker 1: about fifteen minutes. Yeah, yeah, so it's addumn. It's cool.
- 4:35Speaker 1: It wasn't freezing though it obviously wasn't Europe in winter.
- 4:38Speaker 1: But I checked bags down to Melbourne for the first
- 4:40Speaker 1: time because I had to take a whole bunch of
- 4:41Speaker 1: stuff down for our bin on Friday night. God, it's
- 4:44Speaker 1: a luxury when you know you're checking a bag. It's
- 4:46Speaker 1: like you just don't have to think so much about
- 4:48Speaker 1: what you're packing. It's like, yep, chuck it in, chuck
- 4:49Speaker 1: it in, yep, I can bring that. Yep, I can
- 4:51Speaker 1: bring that doesn't matter.
- 4:52Speaker 2: But it also is a luxury to not have to
- 4:55Speaker 2: rush onto the plane to make sure that you get
- 4:57Speaker 2: an overhead locker. I got on the last person on
- 5:01Speaker 2: the plane on Sunday because I had a checked bag.
- 5:03Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 5:04Speaker 2: I don't want to fight people. I'm just going to
- 5:06Speaker 2: get on last and then not breathe air aeroplane air
- 5:10Speaker 2: for too long.
- 5:11Speaker 1: And minimize the amount of time that people can rest
- 5:13Speaker 1: their penis on your shoulder. Correct. I think that's good.
- 5:16Speaker 2: I had a very lovely air hosty though. I got
- 5:18Speaker 2: on the flight and she goes, oh, you look very nice.
- 5:21Speaker 2: You look like you're off to a business meeting. I
- 5:23Speaker 2: was like, I'm actually a little hungover. And she leaned
- 5:26Speaker 2: behind herself and pulled out a bottle of water and
- 5:28Speaker 2: gave it.
- 5:30Speaker 4: Thank you.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I appreciate that.
- 5:32Speaker 1: Yes, because as well as the Grand Final, we had
- 5:34Speaker 1: a fantastic night on Friday night at the No Dribble
- 5:36Speaker 1: Grand Final Eve Get Excited party. What a vibe?
- 5:40Speaker 2: Yeah, so fun, wasn't it. It was so fun and
- 5:42Speaker 2: everybody came rearing to go Friday night. And I think
- 5:46Speaker 2: a lot of people, as you discovered when you asked
- 5:48Speaker 2: who was in the room, mostly Swifts people. Yeah. I
- 5:52Speaker 2: had already booked their tickets, but I think they were there,
- 5:55Speaker 2: you know, just to enjoy the weekend that obviously traveled
- 5:58Speaker 2: got down there, thought we're going to make the most
- 5:59Speaker 2: of this. Everybody was buzzing as soon as they walked
- 6:01Speaker 2: in the door.
- 6:02Speaker 1: It was great.
- 6:02Speaker 2: It was fantastic and Freyer warmed everybody up so well.
- 6:05Speaker 4: She was great.
- 6:06Speaker 1: Yes, for those of you who weren't there. We had
- 6:08Speaker 1: a comedian I've worked with before. Her name's Friar Morton
- 6:10Speaker 1: and she did a fantastic job for us on the
- 6:12Speaker 1: night we had Gordy there, which was terrific. Gave away
- 6:15Speaker 1: a lot of prizes and I just want to thank
- 6:17Speaker 1: the support of our friends at valor at Fruit Chocks,
- 6:21Speaker 1: at Fruler Beauty, Nicole from Cola Pop Collers, who is
- 6:25Speaker 1: a dribbler and get on the Facebook page because she's
- 6:28Speaker 1: got a discount for us on those great little wine
- 6:30Speaker 1: charms that we have had, and the Patrick the Motman
- 6:33Speaker 1: Magnet which you can get at the moment. And to
- 6:35Speaker 1: Jenny Sinclair who gave us copies of Shine to give away.
- 6:38Speaker 4: It was and.
- 6:40Speaker 2: Bushes, yeah, so good.
- 6:42Speaker 1: So two pairs of neck burners there. So it was
- 6:45Speaker 1: just it was so fun. But what was hilarious was
- 6:48Speaker 1: at the end of our events. Our event was from
- 6:50Speaker 1: five to seven at a pub in Richmond called the
- 6:52Speaker 1: Sporting Globe, which is well to all TVs. People go
- 6:55Speaker 1: there to watch sport, don't they, And we had the
- 6:56Speaker 1: whole upstairs area until a bit after seven, and then
- 6:59Speaker 1: they start to switch the TVs back over to football
- 7:02Speaker 1: and all of these men and young men started to arrive,
- 7:06Speaker 1: and they walked up and went, what's going on here?
- 7:09Speaker 1: What is there's so much estrogen up here? Because everyone
- 7:15Speaker 1: stayed around to have a good time. But I think
- 7:17Speaker 1: they are a little bit ware. It's what am I
- 7:20Speaker 1: walking into with all of these middle aged.
- 7:21Speaker 2: Women who have been on it, yeah and so on
- 7:24Speaker 2: that I've got a request next time we do one,
- 7:26Speaker 2: can we not be working either immediately afterwards like we
- 7:30Speaker 2: did with the Constellation Cup last year, or the Grand
- 7:33Speaker 2: Final the next day, because I would like to get
- 7:35Speaker 2: on it. Yes, I had one or two.
- 7:37Speaker 4: I got to admit.
- 7:38Speaker 3: When those young men walked up the stairs, I thought, oh,
- 7:40Speaker 3: Carolyn's organized some extra entertainment for us.
- 7:44Speaker 1: The Jip and Dales arrived.
- 7:47Speaker 3: Can I give you one of my little highlights from
- 7:49Speaker 3: the night was I loved the fact I met a
- 7:52Speaker 3: table full of women and they didn't know each other
- 7:55Speaker 3: before they turned up, and a couple of them would
- 7:57Speaker 3: come by themselves and didn't know a soul, and within
- 8:01Speaker 3: minutes on the line whither they waiting to come in
- 8:03Speaker 3: the door, they'd made friends.
- 8:05Speaker 4: And they just sat in a bag the whole night,
- 8:07Speaker 4: And I thought.
- 8:08Speaker 3: The no Dribble community, like you're guaranteed to find a
- 8:10Speaker 3: friend when you turn up to one of our functions.
- 8:12Speaker 4: It was so great.
- 8:13Speaker 5: Anyway, we're all gasbagging about it was half of us
- 8:16Speaker 5: bagging about how good it was to embrace your gray
- 8:19Speaker 5: and you know, scouting about the fact that we no
- 8:21Speaker 5: longer spend half a day in three hundred bucks a
- 8:23Speaker 5: month with the hairdresser.
- 8:24Speaker 3: But it was just so lovely to meet these women
- 8:27Speaker 3: who'd all just met each other and we're having a
- 8:29Speaker 3: great time.
- 8:30Speaker 2: Yeah, how about the did you see the four ladies
- 8:32Speaker 2: that all had the beige coats on?
- 8:34Speaker 1: Were the other ones you gave your hats?
- 8:38Speaker 2: And so true to form, they had them on the
- 8:40Speaker 2: next day at the game taking photos and I think
- 8:43Speaker 2: you did you see them? No, Liz did. They're still
- 8:46Speaker 2: chatting to them what you at one point in the game.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Very so we should tell everyone what we're talking about,
- 8:51Speaker 1: so cast remind back dribblers. Last year I went to
- 8:54Speaker 1: a game in Perth. It was a Giants Fever game
- 8:57Speaker 1: and it was my first ever game over there, and
- 8:59Speaker 1: if you have been to a game in the West,
- 9:01Speaker 1: highly recommend it. And I was going to support the
- 9:03Speaker 1: Giants because I like to support the away team. I
- 9:06Speaker 1: think if you're a visitor, you should support the visitors.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That's what I did on the weekend, which meant that
- 9:10Speaker 1: I was supporting Fever not Vixen's, but ultimately didn't care
- 9:14Speaker 1: because it was just the best game ever. But Catherine
- 9:16Speaker 1: suggested that so people would recognize me in the stadium,
- 9:20Speaker 1: that I should wear something distinctive, and I said, well,
- 9:23Speaker 1: surely the Giants T shirt will be enough. There won't
- 9:25Speaker 1: be a lot of us over there. And she gave
- 9:27Speaker 1: me a lovely multi colored propeller hat that I had
- 9:30Speaker 1: to wear for the entire game. And so I got
- 9:34Speaker 1: four of those and we all wore them on the
- 9:36Speaker 1: panel on Friday night, and then couldn't find them when
- 9:40Speaker 1: I was doing the pack up afterwards, and I thought,
- 9:43Speaker 1: I can't imagine that Liz and Kath and Sue have
- 9:45Speaker 1: thought going to take this one home to wear it again.
- 9:48Speaker 1: And lo and behold, Catherine Cox had re homed the
- 9:51Speaker 1: hats for me.
- 9:53Speaker 4: She's good like that.
- 9:53Speaker 1: Yeah, it's all right. I've got an endless supply.
- 9:56Speaker 2: But they look great and well done, ladies, because they
- 9:58Speaker 2: did wear them did so the provide So is that
- 10:00Speaker 2: you wear these. If you're going to wear matching beige
- 10:02Speaker 2: jackets to our event, you should wear the matching hats. Yeah.
- 10:04Speaker 1: I don't think they wore them through the whole game.
- 10:06Speaker 1: I did say that was the sacred rule of the
- 10:08Speaker 1: stupid hat, and they told me they were defenders and
- 10:10Speaker 1: they wouldn't want to block anyone's view behind them. But anyway,
- 10:13Speaker 1: well done. We do have photographic evidence of them having
- 10:16Speaker 1: worn them.
- 10:16Speaker 2: Can I tell you another way to be distinguished throughout
- 10:19Speaker 2: the contest and through the game and in the stadium
- 10:21Speaker 2: where a monocle wear a bright orange suit.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Yeah, Liza, if only i'd known, I didn't get that memo.
- 10:27Speaker 2: It was a pisser. Every time I went to look
- 10:30Speaker 2: for you, it was so easy to find you.
- 10:33Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 10:34Speaker 2: And then I thought, my god, that must be the
- 10:35Speaker 2: same for me, that we would rock up wearing the
- 10:40Speaker 2: same outfit. I mean, it was slightly different, but exactly
- 10:43Speaker 2: the same. And last year I had to interview Liz
- 10:46Speaker 2: in the pre game for Fox, so thank god that did.
- 10:52Speaker 4: Someone said to me, don't you two talk to each other?
- 10:54Speaker 3: I'm like, yeah, we had dinner last night, we had
- 10:56Speaker 3: breakfast this morning, we had lunch on Thursday, but you know,
- 11:00Speaker 3: not about I'm not fistay anymore. We just you just
- 11:02Speaker 3: know you're going to turn up fully clothed. I wasn't
- 11:04Speaker 3: going to run my water past you, but I did
- 11:07Speaker 3: kill myself laughing.
- 11:08Speaker 2: It was so great, though, because I literally I could
- 11:10Speaker 2: see you everywhere, standing out like a sore thumb.
- 11:14Speaker 1: It was great.
- 11:15Speaker 4: There was no where to hide, so much to say that.
- 11:17Speaker 3: I was trying to take a photo of My sister
- 11:19Speaker 3: was there with me, and I got it to take
- 11:22Speaker 3: a phuto of me standing behind you while you're doing
- 11:25Speaker 3: your final sort of summary of the match, and I
- 11:28Speaker 3: snuck up the stairs. I thought I'd snuck up the
- 11:30Speaker 3: stairs to stand behind you. I've got a photo of
- 11:32Speaker 3: me pointing at you while you're wearing your orange suit
- 11:35Speaker 3: and I'm wearing my orange suit. But one of our
- 11:37Speaker 3: dribblers caught me, like the cameras caught me. I just
- 11:39Speaker 3: forgot that if you're in a bright orange suit, it's.
- 11:41Speaker 4: Hard to hide. You can't speak.
- 11:45Speaker 3: I thought, oh my god, I'm still such a nong
- 11:48Speaker 3: like I've worked on broadcast for twenty five years.
- 11:52Speaker 4: Like the cameras are on, you can't really sneak high.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Yes, but that was funny dinner Friday night too, so
- 12:02Speaker 1: we had the event. You guys, we all sort of
- 12:05Speaker 1: went our separate ways. I took Pete and the girls.
- 12:08Speaker 1: I had my daughter and her friend with me, went
- 12:10Speaker 1: back to my friend's apartment where we were staying, and
- 12:12Speaker 1: then Pete and I said, we just got a gout
- 12:13Speaker 1: for dinner because I don't know. Apparently the cannapays were
- 12:15Speaker 1: very good, but I didn't get one.
- 12:16Speaker 2: I didn't get a nice single piece of fat either.
- 12:18Speaker 3: Yeah, that's poor positional play by you too.
- 12:21Speaker 4: I got some.
- 12:23Speaker 1: Good week. I got the liquid refreshments, which was nice.
- 12:25Speaker 1: But we thought we won't go far because the girls
- 12:28Speaker 1: were just up in the apartment. Strange city. We just
- 12:30Speaker 1: wandered out, went into this restaurant this looks lovely, sat
- 12:33Speaker 1: there having dinner, going this nice. Got to the end
- 12:36Speaker 1: of the meal and I looked up and I see Catherine, what.
- 12:39Speaker 4: Are you doing?
- 12:39Speaker 1: And then you two are in the back of the
- 12:41Speaker 1: same restaurant. All the restaurants in Melbourne.
- 12:44Speaker 2: And there's that particular place where we were, so Flinder's Lane,
- 12:47Speaker 2: and all the streets around it all restaurants. Yes, So
- 12:50Speaker 2: the chances that we did end up in the same
- 12:51Speaker 2: as nuts.
- 12:52Speaker 1: Yeah, I know, just ridiculous. And we thought even I
- 12:54Speaker 1: saw you, what a good week. Because we were sitting
- 12:56Speaker 1: at the front of the restaurant. There's this frosted glass
- 12:58Speaker 1: wall in between us, and I didn't have my glasses,
- 13:01Speaker 1: and I thought, can't be Catherine, can it classic? I
- 13:06Speaker 1: do have to couple of things. I was told off
- 13:09Speaker 1: on Friday night by Susan. So Susan and Allison told
- 13:13Speaker 1: me a great story. They are Swifts fans and they
- 13:14Speaker 1: were at the Swifts game the week before, had some
- 13:16Speaker 1: great banter with some Vixen's fans, and at the end
- 13:20Speaker 1: of the game and those Vixen's fans graciously said, here
- 13:22Speaker 1: are the scarves if you're coming down. So they wore
- 13:24Speaker 1: the scars. But then Susan reminded me that I have
- 13:27Speaker 1: not given the final update on the Sexy Gals group
- 13:31Speaker 1: in the Vala Dribblers tipping comp and she wants me
- 13:35Speaker 1: to be very clear that she, Susan, is the winner
- 13:39Speaker 1: of the Sexy Gals tipping comp, followed by you, followed
- 13:43Speaker 1: by cant Now. I did say the top ten. We
- 13:45Speaker 1: were going to be surveying the strength of name versus
- 13:49Speaker 1: tipping prowess of the top ten, two were Susan's, two
- 13:54Speaker 1: were Elizabeth's, two were Carolyn's. Let's be honest, though there's
- 13:58Speaker 1: Katherine Kate. But anyway, it is your name that is
- 14:01Speaker 1: the strongest in tipping, which is I mean with the
- 14:04Speaker 1: performance within our actual group.
- 14:06Speaker 2: Yeah, I kind of knew that was going to be
- 14:08Speaker 2: the case, didn't we before we even did that?
- 14:10Speaker 1: Okay, anyway, whatever happens, I'm still buying lunch. But Susan, congratulations,
- 14:14Speaker 1: and congratulations also to Lisa Bass, who was the winner
- 14:17Speaker 1: of our Valor Dribbler's tipping comp who was there with
- 14:21Speaker 1: her daughter Lauren. Yes, they tip the fever, so I
- 14:23Speaker 1: don't know what the hell she knows about tipping.
- 14:25Speaker 2: Well because there's no pressure on them. Well, that's already
- 14:28Speaker 2: won the big bucks.
- 14:30Speaker 1: And something I discovered that, of all the things, she
- 14:32Speaker 1: lives about three hundred meters from here. Yeah, crazy, isn't it.
- 14:37Speaker 2: There you go, such a good event though, thank you
- 14:39Speaker 2: everybody for coming and came to hang out with us.
- 14:42Speaker 2: We had lots and lots of laughs and we will
- 14:46Speaker 2: do another one very shortly because it was good.
- 15:03Speaker 1: But I want to talk Liz about the venue for
- 15:06Speaker 1: the Grand Final. Now, I thought rod Laver Arena was sensational.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Thought it was a fantastic event. I obviously went along,
- 15:14Speaker 1: wasn't supporting either team. I actually sort of just picked
- 15:17Speaker 1: a team because it makes it a little bit nicer
- 15:19Speaker 1: when you're supporting one as just a vanilla punter. I
- 15:23Speaker 1: thought it was sensational. Obviously, people have opinions about whether
- 15:28Speaker 1: the team that is the top of the ladder should
- 15:30Speaker 1: have a home final, and some of those opinions are
- 15:34Speaker 1: being expressed not so much in our Facebook group, but
- 15:37Speaker 1: in other Netbak Facebook groups that there seems to a
- 15:40Speaker 1: sense that this is unfair or suboptimal.
- 15:44Speaker 2: This is the fourth year. People are still complaining about that. Yeah,
- 15:47Speaker 2: you've met people, right, fascinating. Yeah, but the AFL can
- 15:51Speaker 2: do it for years.
- 15:53Speaker 1: It Yeah, the NFL the grid Iron in the US,
- 15:58Speaker 1: they change cities every year. The AFL and the NRAL
- 16:01Speaker 1: have it in the same place every year, but the
- 16:04Speaker 1: NFL changes cities and they have it you know, you
- 16:06Speaker 1: know advance, so you go for the event, not just
- 16:11Speaker 1: for you, whether your team's.
- 16:12Speaker 2: In it, and the Grand Final there's no way in
- 16:14Speaker 2: the world would be as good as it has been
- 16:17Speaker 2: the last four years unless it was predetermined, because you
- 16:20Speaker 2: need time to do that.
- 16:22Speaker 3: You do, and particularly when you're doing things like the lunch,
- 16:25Speaker 3: you can't just sell eight hundred texts in two weeks.
- 16:27Speaker 4: You've got to be ready for that.
- 16:28Speaker 3: It also allows you to get the event into the
- 16:32Speaker 3: diaries of politicians. So we had a number of politicians
- 16:36Speaker 3: at the game on Saturday. You know, I sat next
- 16:39Speaker 3: to the Victorian Premier and I said to her, Oh,
- 16:41Speaker 3: I just think that you need to get this back
- 16:43Speaker 3: here again next year. And I think she might have
- 16:46Speaker 3: been green. So you know, it allows you.
- 16:49Speaker 1: To get you need your bag of cash, but it.
- 16:51Speaker 3: Also allows you to get it into the diary of
- 16:54Speaker 3: your sponsors and your partners and so that you can
- 16:57Speaker 3: get their senior representatives along. So we had really good
- 17:00Speaker 3: representatives from representation from some called HCF or worse.
- 17:07Speaker 4: Nissan just to think of all of our big partners.
- 17:10Speaker 3: And so it allows you to turn it into an event.
- 17:14Speaker 3: And I mean the game was decided by a goal,
- 17:17Speaker 3: and I don't know that a home venue would have
- 17:21Speaker 3: made an enormous amount of difference. You sort of get
- 17:23Speaker 3: the feeling that the Vixens were pretty determined. They were
- 17:26Speaker 3: going to win that game. But I just think it
- 17:29Speaker 3: just allows you to have a far more professional, corporate event,
- 17:33Speaker 3: and I think that it will expand in the coming years.
- 17:36Speaker 3: I think we'll start to do some more in the
- 17:38Speaker 3: days prior to the Grand Finals so that it can
- 17:41Speaker 3: be a really big celebration of our sport. And the
- 17:44Speaker 3: thing that I took out of the weekend was that
- 17:47Speaker 3: because we were able to make it such a massive celebration,
- 17:50Speaker 3: the sport.
- 17:51Speaker 4: Is really proud of itself.
- 17:52Speaker 3: And that's what I want for our whole community, not
- 17:55Speaker 3: just you know Netball Australia or the Vixens or the
- 17:58Speaker 3: Fever or the Sea said, I want everyone who plays
- 18:02Speaker 3: netball in this country to be really proud of our sport.
- 18:05Speaker 4: And it feels like that at.
- 18:06Speaker 3: The moment because we were able to generate excitement, were
- 18:10Speaker 3: able to generate you know, great attendance from from the
- 18:14Speaker 3: netball community but also from government and from partners and
- 18:17Speaker 3: from corporates, and you know, there's a great sort of
- 18:20Speaker 3: thing in the CBD column of the Age and the
- 18:22Speaker 3: Sydney Morning Herald today talking about you know who was there,
- 18:25Speaker 3: the big names that were there, and that generates the
- 18:28Speaker 3: momentum for us, and I just don't know that you
- 18:30Speaker 3: can do that. And you know, one of the things
- 18:32Speaker 3: that gets talked about a bit is do we go
- 18:34Speaker 3: to a best of three Grand Final series?
- 18:36Speaker 4: And we'll probably have a look.
- 18:38Speaker 1: At it, but that'd be so look at how tired.
- 18:43Speaker 3: I as you get hit by a bus, the bus
- 18:45Speaker 3: reverse over you and then come back at you and
- 18:47Speaker 3: doing it again. I'm going to balance that up between
- 18:49Speaker 3: do you have like what's your big showcase game and
- 18:52Speaker 3: this is for us as a big showcased game. Now
- 18:54Speaker 3: you should always be looking at how you can make
- 18:56Speaker 3: the presentation of the sport bigger and better and keep evolving.
- 19:00Speaker 3: I think you know, someone said to me on Saturday
- 19:03Speaker 3: night after the game, Oh, you know, well, when net
- 19:05Speaker 3: Bord Australia pays off its debt and does all this,
- 19:07Speaker 3: surely you'll go back to the Grand Final going to
- 19:10Speaker 3: the team that wins at that major preliminary semi.
- 19:13Speaker 4: I was really honest.
- 19:14Speaker 3: I just said, no, I don't think that will happen,
- 19:16Speaker 3: because this is turning into a massive event. And just
- 19:20Speaker 3: like the AFL and the NRL, and if you're in
- 19:22Speaker 3: the States, as Carolyn mentioned, you know the NFL or
- 19:25Speaker 3: wherever you are, you just know that this is going
- 19:28Speaker 3: to be It's more than a game. So once you
- 19:31Speaker 3: know the Grand Finals on, that's when you start thinking
- 19:33Speaker 3: about No, I do a book tickets because even if
- 19:35Speaker 3: your team doesn't make it, you're still part of the event.
- 19:37Speaker 4: Like I spoke to heaps.
- 19:38Speaker 3: Of people who are from Sydney whought the Swifts are
- 19:40Speaker 3: going to make it, and they booked and even though
- 19:42Speaker 3: they were disappointed, the Swifts went there.
- 19:44Speaker 4: They'd had an absolute blast of a weekend.
- 19:46Speaker 1: Yes, there were people in it some way where you
- 19:49Speaker 1: have a better time because you don't have the stress
- 19:52Speaker 1: like the week before. I did not enjoy myself at
- 19:54Speaker 1: that Swift's game, even for the part of the game
- 19:57Speaker 1: then it was looking good and on that just the Vixens.
- 20:00Speaker 1: You know, the Vixens didn't win that because of a
- 20:03Speaker 1: home crowd, because the Vixen's got there the week before
- 20:06Speaker 1: in Sydney without a home crowd. They gqualified the week before,
- 20:09Speaker 1: They're all sudden death in Adelaide without a home crowd.
- 20:13Speaker 1: So it just it doesn't it doesn't make sense to
- 20:15Speaker 1: say that that was the deciding factor.
- 20:17Speaker 2: You know what was awesome the two days. Three days
- 20:20Speaker 2: we were there, there were people netball people everywhere. Everywhere
- 20:24Speaker 2: I went, someone pulled me up to have a chat
- 20:27Speaker 2: about the Grand Fall I'm talking about, gone to breakfast
- 20:30Speaker 2: and then we're out having drinks, and at the airport
- 20:32Speaker 2: it was like everywhere because people had all taken the
- 20:35Speaker 2: time to travel down and have a great weekend. So absolutely,
- 20:38Speaker 2: But I can't wait to do that as a fan
- 20:41Speaker 2: as well. No, but I mean we're sitting in the
- 20:44Speaker 2: corridor in our greenway before the game, and you just
- 20:47Speaker 2: know there's all this awesome stuff happening that you can't
- 20:50Speaker 2: go to. So I really want to experience it one
- 20:52Speaker 2: day because it sounds amazing.
- 20:53Speaker 3: Kathan, do you think the first Grand Final you and
- 20:56Speaker 3: I go to was just fans? When we're not working,
- 20:57Speaker 3: Should we wear the same thing?
- 21:00Speaker 2: Yes, we'll. We'll wear an orange suit and a propeller
- 21:03Speaker 2: hat and sit together and just you'll be able to see.
- 21:06Speaker 4: I can't wait.
- 21:07Speaker 3: I reckon, We've got ten years before that happens. But
- 21:09Speaker 3: and Carolyn, you can come with us too, and you
- 21:11Speaker 3: can be like the minime version of us in your
- 21:13Speaker 3: own orange pad suit.
- 21:14Speaker 1: Look, I can't tell you how great I'd look in
- 21:16Speaker 1: an orange suit.
- 21:22Speaker 4: Here we are got her own little Yeah.
- 21:25Speaker 1: No, I thought it was terrific. I loved I loved
- 21:28Speaker 1: knowing well in advance where it was. I do know
- 21:30Speaker 1: from chat on Facebook that a lot of people who
- 21:32Speaker 1: were trying to buy tickets to get to Melbourne in
- 21:34Speaker 1: the past week that it was priced out of their
- 21:37Speaker 1: out of their range, and that's the risk you take
- 21:39Speaker 1: if you're waiting to see if your team is in.
- 21:41Speaker 1: I was able to get I was able to get
- 21:43Speaker 1: frequent fire seats for my daughter and her friend because
- 21:46Speaker 1: I've decided months ago that I would go because I
- 21:48Speaker 1: knew when it was on and where it was on,
- 21:50Speaker 1: and that that was really helpful for me. And like
- 21:53Speaker 1: you can't, like, we would not have had that crowd
- 21:55Speaker 1: crossing to Perth if we found out sort of two
- 21:58Speaker 1: weeks in advance. Okay, it's in Perth in two weeks.
- 22:01Speaker 1: There's only so many flights and they're bloody expensive, even
- 22:04Speaker 1: if you can get a discount one, So you know,
- 22:07Speaker 1: I think that fever travelers were traveling anyway.
- 22:10Speaker 2: I also heard from a lot of the dribblers at
- 22:11Speaker 2: the event that there was a spiking ticket sales at
- 22:14Speaker 2: about the three quarter time mark of the Swift scheme.
- 22:17Speaker 1: Really okay?
- 22:18Speaker 2: Yes? Can I just like at the game actually buying
- 22:21Speaker 2: tickets to go to the Grand Final thinking they were thanking.
- 22:25Speaker 1: They dated fifteen minutes. But I tell you, I saw
- 22:29Speaker 1: a lot of Vixen's people, obviously, and I've got my
- 22:31Speaker 1: scarf because Luise gave me one and said I could
- 22:34Speaker 1: get on the bandwagon. This was at the end of
- 22:35Speaker 1: the game. I saw a lot of people in Vixen's gear.
- 22:37Speaker 1: I saw a lot of people in Fever gear, and
- 22:39Speaker 1: I saw a lot of people in swift S gear.
- 22:42Speaker 1: I saw a few people in Thunderbirds gear, but I
- 22:44Speaker 1: didn't see anyone. I didn't see much in the way
- 22:46Speaker 1: of the other the other teams. But it's it's quite interesting.
- 22:50Speaker 2: Can I ask a question?
- 22:51Speaker 1: Though?
- 22:51Speaker 2: So we all thought it was a record Grand Final
- 22:54Speaker 2: crowd of fourteen thousand, right, because that's a sellout at
- 22:56Speaker 2: the event. Next minute the numbers come out, it's fifteen thousand.
- 23:00Speaker 2: Where did they squeeze in a thousand.
- 23:02Speaker 4: Extra in all the corporate sweets? Right? So the corporate
- 23:05Speaker 4: sweets got full full capacity.
- 23:07Speaker 1: Right.
- 23:08Speaker 3: So if you look up, if you're standing at the
- 23:10Speaker 3: bottom of rod Labor and you look up there's a
- 23:12Speaker 3: whole row of corporate suites and they.
- 23:15Speaker 4: Just were at capacity.
- 23:17Speaker 2: Wow. Awesome.
- 23:18Speaker 4: Also, I smuggled a few people and no I didn't.
- 23:20Speaker 4: I promise I did not.
- 23:21Speaker 2: That would be appropriate, just nine hundred and ninety nine
- 23:24Speaker 2: of my face.
- 23:25Speaker 1: The downside of the orange suit, isn't it. It's hard
- 23:28Speaker 1: to get away with smuggling.
- 23:30Speaker 4: Like having a flashing light on your head.
- 23:32Speaker 3: I've got to say though, that Fever supporters group were phenomenal.
- 23:37Speaker 4: They were so loud and they were so green. They
- 23:40Speaker 4: are amazing.
- 23:41Speaker 3: So I love that they traveled across and really got
- 23:44Speaker 3: behind their team. They were just added to the atmosphere
- 23:47Speaker 3: of the event, right. And you know it's such a
- 23:49Speaker 3: good natured crowd, like there's no there's no anks, there's
- 23:53Speaker 3: no like.
- 23:55Speaker 4: I don't know. I just think that four crowds are
- 23:57Speaker 4: so great. It was just the whole thing felt really well.
- 24:00Speaker 1: It was also nice to go to Melbourne to see
- 24:02Speaker 1: some sunshine. I've had a couple of this rain, like
- 24:04Speaker 1: what have we had a week of just torrential ray
- 24:06Speaker 1: in here in Sydney.
- 24:07Speaker 2: So the Melbourn where they was stunning until it got
- 24:09Speaker 2: to nighttime, was freezing. I had to wear socks with
- 24:12Speaker 2: my heels. We were doing the outside broadcast bit because
- 24:15Speaker 2: I remember last year I literally struggled to walk back
- 24:18Speaker 2: in the venue because my feet were frozen. So not
- 24:20Speaker 2: making that mistake again. Sadly, somebody took a photo and
- 24:24Speaker 2: it ended up on social.
- 24:25Speaker 1: Media, I know, which I thought was terrific.
- 24:27Speaker 2: That's okay.
- 24:27Speaker 1: A couple of things we have done. The Hottest the
- 24:30Speaker 1: Dribbler's Hottest not quite one hundred, and that has been
- 24:33Speaker 1: released on Facebook and there is a playlist on Spotify now.
- 24:36Speaker 4: So get it out.
- 24:38Speaker 1: So we're not that far from what the standard ABC
- 24:40Speaker 1: Hottest one hundred is. This shows a more refined taste.
- 24:43Speaker 2: Nicki Webster didn't make the cut.
- 24:45Speaker 1: Nikki Webster did not make the cut. Flame Trees was
- 24:48Speaker 1: number one, pay sand was number three, You're the Voice
- 24:52Speaker 1: was number two, and I think scar By Missy Higgins
- 24:54Speaker 1: was number four.
- 24:55Speaker 2: Wow.
- 24:55Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a cracking playlist though. It's really good, so
- 24:58Speaker 1: jump on Spotify. I put the link to that in
- 25:00Speaker 1: the Facebook group. But thank you to everybody who shared
- 25:03Speaker 1: their top ten, and also maybe keep a little bit
- 25:06Speaker 1: of an eye out on Facebook group this week we
- 25:08Speaker 1: might have a little bit of an interesting merch offering
- 25:11Speaker 1: for you. We're going to try to do that, so ok,
- 25:15Speaker 1: but that'll be a quick one in the market.
- 25:17Speaker 2: So what's it under No Dribble?
- 25:19Speaker 4: What I found it on Spotify?
- 25:21Speaker 1: Here it is you see No Dribble Hottest not quite
- 25:23Speaker 1: one hundred.
- 25:28Speaker 2: So after the game, the Fox fan decided they were
- 25:31Speaker 2: kind of dispersing. Everyone was going different ways. I was like, right, well,
- 25:34Speaker 2: I'm going to go and meet the Ellis and have
- 25:36Speaker 2: a wine. So we met up back basically where we'd
- 25:38Speaker 2: had dinner the night before, and then by that stage
- 25:42Speaker 2: it was one oh midnight. What time is it? Anyway
- 25:46Speaker 2: it was, and we're at the point where the decision
- 25:48Speaker 2: was being made to leave, and I was like, we
- 25:50Speaker 2: should go and see Gordy. We should go and come on,
- 25:53Speaker 2: let's just go and find Gordy and have one drink
- 25:55Speaker 2: and then we'll go. And we walked in and someone
- 25:58Speaker 2: said to me, God, that would have been a really
- 25:59Speaker 2: depressed room, was, wouldn't it. I'm like, yeah, I'm sure
- 26:02Speaker 2: it was. At the start when we got there, it
- 26:04Speaker 2: was pumping, not it was bumping. Dan Ryan was the
- 26:07Speaker 2: first person we read into it. He had some choice words,
- 26:10Speaker 2: which is very funny. But they were all on their
- 26:12Speaker 2: way to just celebrating a great season. Great so we
- 26:16Speaker 2: saw Gordy had a drink. I think we left about two,
- 26:21Speaker 2: but given we'd only left the venue at eleven is,
- 26:23Speaker 2: it wasn't like a massive nine anyway. I spoke to
- 26:26Speaker 2: Gordy the next day and she said the girls had fun.
- 26:30Speaker 2: There was a few that got home when the sun
- 26:32Speaker 2: was well and truly up. They Yeah, great, that's what
- 26:36Speaker 2: it's all about. It only happens one, really, one night
- 26:39Speaker 2: a year, doesn't it after you finish a massive season.
- 26:42Speaker 1: And gut wrenching, But man, what a season they have had,
- 26:47Speaker 1: just absolutely sensational. And my seats were right behind their bench.
- 26:51Speaker 1: It was great, great seats. But when you're that close,
- 26:54Speaker 1: you see the emotions that the devastation afterwards, and it's
- 26:59Speaker 1: just so hard it hurts. It hurts the fans like
- 27:04Speaker 1: it's really takes it takes time to process it and
- 27:08Speaker 1: it is just such a you know, you have the
- 27:10Speaker 1: adrenaline and the emotion and then it doesn't translate to
- 27:14Speaker 1: what you hoped it would. And I was thrilled. I
- 27:17Speaker 1: thought it was a wonderful Grand Final. It was so
- 27:20Speaker 1: great to see Vixen celebrate after but unfortunately, in order
- 27:24Speaker 1: for someone to win, someone has to lose, and it's
- 27:26Speaker 1: it's hard. I really felt for them.
- 27:28Speaker 3: Yeah, it's really hard, and you know, thinking back to
- 27:31Speaker 3: when we were playing Coxy, losing a grand final, it's awful,
- 27:35Speaker 3: but it's the time when you actually learn the most
- 27:38Speaker 3: about yourself and about your team. So you know, we
- 27:41Speaker 3: lost a couple I think before we won one. And
- 27:45Speaker 3: like I played super netble or not super Netble, it
- 27:48Speaker 3: was used to be in the national league for ten
- 27:49Speaker 3: years before before I played in the team that won
- 27:52Speaker 3: a grand final.
- 27:53Speaker 4: And you know, last year, if you cast.
- 27:55Speaker 3: Your mind back, you look at the Vixens and they
- 27:57Speaker 3: were devastated because they got pumped by the Underbirds in
- 28:00Speaker 3: the preliminary final and then they were so close in
- 28:03Speaker 3: the grand final. And obviously they've gone away and they've
- 28:06Speaker 3: learned and they've grown, and they brought that this weekend.
- 28:09Speaker 3: You look at that Fever team and Janel's the oldest
- 28:13Speaker 3: by a long shot. They've got a lot of young
- 28:14Speaker 3: players in that lineup and I think they'll all go
- 28:17Speaker 3: away and they'll it will make them work harder than
- 28:20Speaker 3: they think they possibly can, and they will be a
- 28:24Speaker 3: better team next year, which is a scary thought. You know,
- 28:27Speaker 3: those younger players will learn so much out of this loss.
- 28:30Speaker 3: It's just devastating. In the time afterwards, and when it's
- 28:34Speaker 3: like a one goal you go back and play everything
- 28:37Speaker 3: over and over and over again in your mind, don't you,
- 28:40Speaker 3: And you think like it's really easy for one player
- 28:43Speaker 3: to blame themselves. But the fact of the matter is
- 28:45Speaker 3: that it's a team of seven or eight or nine
- 28:48Speaker 3: or haven't any plays, and there's plenty of times where
- 28:51Speaker 3: you can do things better, and they'll go and find
- 28:53Speaker 3: those better moments. I just think for Fever it was devastating,
- 28:57Speaker 3: but I also think it's going to be a huge
- 28:59Speaker 3: learning experience out next year.
- 29:01Speaker 2: I reckon it's the first time I noticed that they
- 29:04Speaker 2: lack a really strong goal attack, because normally it's not
- 29:08Speaker 2: an issue genial fowl and Ema does the job regardless,
- 29:11Speaker 2: but because she was taken out of the contest, there
- 29:13Speaker 2: was no one else to fill the gap. That's where
- 29:16Speaker 2: I think they got quite exposed in that game. And
- 29:18Speaker 2: my god, I was so frustrated with the Vixens. And
- 29:21Speaker 2: I know a lot of people work because they've always
- 29:23Speaker 2: they've texted me, but they should have won that game
- 29:26Speaker 2: by a lot more because of the passing in and
- 29:28Speaker 2: out in instead of shooting goals, passing the ball out
- 29:32Speaker 2: and losing possession. I reckon it happened five times. They
- 29:35Speaker 2: should have won that game by more.
- 29:37Speaker 1: It wouldn't have been as exciting then.
- 29:39Speaker 2: I mean, at the end of the day, they won
- 29:40Speaker 2: the game, so you can't criticize, but it was driving
- 29:44Speaker 2: me batty and I just thought at the end far
- 29:46Speaker 2: out well, good on them. They probably could have won
- 29:49Speaker 2: that by ten.
- 29:49Speaker 1: Tell you what, though, jess Anstas and Kate Maloney, what
- 29:53Speaker 1: extraordinary ambassadors for the game. They are in great role morals,
- 29:58Speaker 1: and it's like just it's Kate Maloney. She's very happy
- 30:02Speaker 1: to share her personality too with that speech and and
- 30:05Speaker 1: to you know, give a sort of, I guess, a
- 30:08Speaker 1: little bit of a shot under the ribs to people
- 30:11Speaker 1: who had doubts about them.
- 30:13Speaker 2: Pissed myself loving no good. It's unreal.
- 30:19Speaker 3: I got to say, Catherine, you're talking before about the
- 30:22Speaker 3: fever being exposed with lack of a gold attack. Can
- 30:24Speaker 3: we just talk about how good Joe Weston was. That's
- 30:28Speaker 3: the best I have possessed. She was possessed, Wasn't she
- 30:34Speaker 3: just phenomenal.
- 30:35Speaker 2: I have never seen her play like that. I've seen
- 30:39Speaker 2: her play good games, but she was on another level,
- 30:43Speaker 2: like mentally, on another level. Do you agree with that?
- 30:46Speaker 4: Yeah? Absolutely, it was like her eyes had rolled back
- 30:49Speaker 4: into a skull.
- 30:51Speaker 1: She was just too She got put on report and
- 30:54Speaker 1: but then was still able to play and play at
- 30:58Speaker 1: that level. You know, because I think in commentary you
- 31:00Speaker 1: were talking about she's going to have to change your
- 31:03Speaker 1: style of play now because she's under the runner in
- 31:07Speaker 1: their sights and whatever. But she was able to adjust
- 31:10Speaker 1: that and still be as if arguably if not more
- 31:14Speaker 1: effective for the rest of the game. And I thought
- 31:16Speaker 1: that was amazing.
- 31:17Speaker 4: Yeah, phenomenal.
- 31:18Speaker 3: And so just to be clear, because someone asked me
- 31:20Speaker 3: about this yesterday the Fox commentary team, Catherine.
- 31:24Speaker 4: You guys gave Joe your player of the match? Is
- 31:25Speaker 4: that correct?
- 31:27Speaker 2: See? I didn't typically that's what happens. I thought it
- 31:31Speaker 2: was Kira, of course she did. But then I saw
- 31:34Speaker 2: the super I saw that same thing posted. At that stage,
- 31:38Speaker 2: I disappeared to go and concentrate on the post games.
- 31:41Speaker 2: I don't know entirely what had happened there. I think
- 31:45Speaker 2: the league picked Kira as the player of the Grand Final,
- 31:49Speaker 2: and that it may have been Joe was the player
- 31:51Speaker 2: of our player of the match. Which happens, doesn't it
- 31:55Speaker 2: most of the time. It's different. It's always been different.
- 31:58Speaker 2: They normally take a few of the experts from the crowd,
- 32:00Speaker 2: don't they, and they head them up before the game
- 32:02Speaker 2: and say, could you give us a three two one?
- 32:04Speaker 2: And then that's how they do. They might have asked
- 32:05Speaker 2: a normal plumber. They could have asked Alzellos.
- 32:07Speaker 1: Well, they didn't ask me, to be clear.
- 32:09Speaker 2: Okay, well was on everybody. But that's how they would
- 32:14Speaker 2: normally do. The other one, isn't it.
- 32:16Speaker 3: Yeah, they have a panel and so they have a
- 32:17Speaker 3: panel that they use during the year. So I've been
- 32:19Speaker 3: invited to be on that panel before I was on
- 32:21Speaker 3: the board, and I couldn't do it because I was traveling.
- 32:24Speaker 3: So they have a panel and it's often level three coaches,
- 32:28Speaker 3: or it's not level three coaches anymore, it's high performance
- 32:31Speaker 3: coaches or someone who's played for the Diamonds or something
- 32:35Speaker 3: like that. And they'll do it through the year at
- 32:37Speaker 3: different games, and you give you three two one and
- 32:39Speaker 3: it's all quite official. You get given criteria that you
- 32:42Speaker 3: have to meet and whenever I've done it before when
- 32:45Speaker 3: I was commentating, we used to have to do it.
- 32:47Speaker 4: We're commentating.
- 32:48Speaker 3: I would do a three two one at the end
- 32:49Speaker 3: of every quarter, because sometimes you'll get sort of really
- 32:52Speaker 3: caught up at the end of a match if someone's
- 32:54Speaker 3: had a great last quarter. But I would always make
- 32:56Speaker 3: sure that I picked someone who was consistently good across
- 32:58Speaker 3: the Gamessume there would have been a number of people
- 33:02Speaker 3: who would have been tasked with doing a three two one,
- 33:05Speaker 3: and then who were in the crowd, and then they
- 33:08Speaker 3: would have sent it through to you know, whoever was
- 33:10Speaker 3: collating it.
- 33:11Speaker 4: So it ended up being Kira.
- 33:12Speaker 3: And you know, it was really hard to draw a
- 33:15Speaker 3: line between Kira and Joe Weston, So you know, if
- 33:17Speaker 3: it was Catherine and me, we both would have had
- 33:19Speaker 3: to have punch on in the car park because they
- 33:21Speaker 3: were both so good. And I thought Rudy Ellis was
- 33:24Speaker 3: outstanding as well, and Kate Maloney. Yeah, like you know,
- 33:27Speaker 3: you could have convinced me that any of the seven
- 33:28Speaker 3: on court were good enough to get it. They were
- 33:30Speaker 3: just all phenomenal and they all had moments that had
- 33:33Speaker 3: a massive impact on the game.
- 33:35Speaker 2: It was great actually watching the net points as the
- 33:37Speaker 2: game was going, because it was clearly Kira, and then
- 33:40Speaker 2: it was Kate and it was Joe, so it was
- 33:42Speaker 2: like the three leaders in each of the area. It
- 33:45Speaker 2: was unreal just to watch these guys are all standing
- 33:48Speaker 2: up and owning this game. It was unreal.
- 33:51Speaker 1: Quite a fairy tale for the sport. Hey, yeah, it's
- 33:54Speaker 1: just such such a great story.
- 33:57Speaker 2: You know, the and Liz, you were sitting with the
- 33:59Speaker 2: lim Pick guy, so that would have helped, did you say,
- 34:03Speaker 2: Steven Bradbury.
- 34:05Speaker 3: You know, I sat between the premier and Christy McLoughlin,
- 34:08Speaker 3: who's the chairman of Sun Corpse, So that was terrific
- 34:11Speaker 3: to have sit next to those two women. But one
- 34:13Speaker 3: of our other board members, I sat near Brendan Keane,
- 34:16Speaker 3: so he was at the game and I was just
- 34:18Speaker 3: wrapped that we were able to showcase just how good
- 34:20Speaker 3: our sporties. And we really wanted to use that game
- 34:26Speaker 3: as a bit of a you know, starting to sort
- 34:28Speaker 3: of pull together our database and our message for Olympic inclusion.
- 34:33Speaker 3: And you know this, this has been going on behind
- 34:36Speaker 3: the scenes now for months to sort of work to
- 34:38Speaker 3: understand and work with the Brisbane Olympic Games Organizing Committee
- 34:41Speaker 3: on what the big process is going to be, what
- 34:43Speaker 3: criteria we need to meet. So it was great to
- 34:45Speaker 3: have someone there from the organizing committee, so someone who
- 34:49Speaker 3: works for that committee and just to be able to
- 34:51Speaker 3: showcase it. And you know, I went into the game
- 34:53Speaker 3: and you want a great game for so many reasons,
- 34:55Speaker 3: but really too, I really wanted to showcase to him
- 34:57Speaker 3: just what a phenomenal no or event we can put on.
- 35:01Speaker 3: And that's just a domestic event. So when you're adding international,
- 35:05Speaker 3: it's that step up, so you know, and we started
- 35:08Speaker 3: we're being really clear in our narrative. We feel like
- 35:10Speaker 3: this is the start of a Golden, Green and Gold
- 35:13Speaker 3: decade for the sport, you know, with the Comworth Games
- 35:15Speaker 3: in a year, we've got a World Cup and celebrating
- 35:18Speaker 3: the centenary of our sport in two years, and then
- 35:20Speaker 3: we'd love to be looking forward to an Olympic berth
- 35:23Speaker 3: in Brisbane in twenty thirty two. So you have to
- 35:26Speaker 3: take every opportunity you can right to get the right
- 35:28Speaker 3: people in the room and to show what you can do.
- 35:30Speaker 3: So that was it was terrific and the players obviously
- 35:33Speaker 3: did their job. The other person we haven't touched on
- 35:35Speaker 3: is Simone McKinnes, and so Catherine. I mean, you've been
- 35:39Speaker 3: coached by her. There's lots of things that I read
- 35:43Speaker 3: in the lad up, like I played in teams with her,
- 35:46Speaker 3: and she was always so relentless about everything that she
- 35:50Speaker 3: did as a coach. Just tell us what she's like.
- 35:53Speaker 3: You know, you can be a hard ass as a
- 35:54Speaker 3: coach and your players can resent you, but the players
- 35:58Speaker 3: love her.
- 35:59Speaker 4: And she's been there thirteen years. That's quite extraordinary.
- 36:02Speaker 2: One of the things that she does the best, in
- 36:04Speaker 2: my eyes, is the pregame speeches in the change rooms
- 36:08Speaker 2: prior she's got the whole room listening, and they are unreal.
- 36:13Speaker 2: I could listen to them all day long. I just
- 36:15Speaker 2: love it so much and it's real passion. So that
- 36:17Speaker 2: was actually the first thing I asked her in the
- 36:19Speaker 2: interview when she came on to the postgame show with us,
- 36:22Speaker 2: I just said to her, given that was your last
- 36:25Speaker 2: sixty minutes as the head coach, and you're so good
- 36:29Speaker 2: at those speeches. Anyway, what did you say in the
- 36:32Speaker 2: chain room today? And she said, to be quite honest,
- 36:36Speaker 2: I didn't prep and normally I would have a think
- 36:38Speaker 2: about what I was going to say, but I wanted
- 36:40Speaker 2: to just go in there and go with the energy
- 36:42Speaker 2: at the time. She's I can't even tell you, I
- 36:44Speaker 2: can't remember, oh wow, what I said, But I did
- 36:46Speaker 2: want them to go out and enjoy themselves and enjoy
- 36:49Speaker 2: the occasion. And you know, you could see that in
- 36:52Speaker 2: that three quarter time speech last week against the New
- 36:54Speaker 2: South Wales Swifts. She can get the best out of
- 36:57Speaker 2: the players, I think by sometimes taking the pressure off
- 37:01Speaker 2: the occasion and just saying to them, just go out
- 37:04Speaker 2: and have a crack. And she's she's simon list like.
- 37:08Speaker 2: She's no different personality wise to the way we've seen
- 37:11Speaker 2: her when she's out and about. She's fun, she's relaxed.
- 37:15Speaker 2: Can most certainly get cranky, and trainings can be tough,
- 37:20Speaker 2: but you know, she's still a goof and I think
- 37:22Speaker 2: that's what the players do love in her, is that
- 37:24Speaker 2: they see that side of her as well and they respect,
- 37:27Speaker 2: you know, the other side of it. So yeah, I'm
- 37:29Speaker 2: not surprised at all by the way they responded to
- 37:32Speaker 2: her at the end of the game. She was one
- 37:33Speaker 2: of the first people that they be lined for at
- 37:35Speaker 2: the end, which was so good to see and what
- 37:37Speaker 2: a fairytale, just the best, so that we've both now
- 37:40Speaker 2: got a fairytale finished at the Vixens, which is pretty cool.
- 37:43Speaker 4: That's unblueable.
- 37:43Speaker 3: Actually, I was watching Simonon in the last ten seconds
- 37:46Speaker 3: and she actually looked really emotional, so I just burst
- 37:49Speaker 3: in the tees. And as Catherine, you know, I cry
- 37:51Speaker 3: at the end of every Grand File. I can't help it,
- 37:52Speaker 3: no matter who wins. I cried last year in the
- 37:54Speaker 3: Thunderbird's one. It's just that moment, right, it's the only time,
- 37:58Speaker 3: the only time I missed playing.
- 38:00Speaker 4: At that level.
- 38:00Speaker 3: Is it when the final whistle goes and the players
- 38:03Speaker 3: look at each other, right, it's really you just know
- 38:06Speaker 3: that you've done something so extraordinary that so few people
- 38:10Speaker 3: get to experience. And it's just that it's fleeting, but
- 38:13Speaker 3: it's so powerful. If you could bottle that moment and
- 38:16Speaker 3: sell it, you'd be in Melionnaire. You bottle that feeling.
- 38:18Speaker 2: And that's what Kira Austin said sorry at the end
- 38:21Speaker 2: of the game too, because she said, this is my
- 38:23Speaker 2: first one that I've won, Wow, And I would love
- 38:25Speaker 2: to bottle this feeling, And because I mean, we were
- 38:28Speaker 2: lucky in that we did win a few. It was
- 38:29Speaker 2: a bit of a golden period. But sometimes people don't
- 38:32Speaker 2: ever win one.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Well, that's right, Really extraordinary athletes can go an entire
- 38:36Speaker 1: career without winning a premiership and it's just amazing, isn't it.
- 38:41Speaker 3: Well, we won a premiership in two thousand and four
- 38:45Speaker 3: and it was your first, Coxy, it was my second.
- 38:48Speaker 3: When we want our first one in two thousand and one,
- 38:51Speaker 3: I was twenty seven. So when I won my second one,
- 38:53Speaker 3: I was thirty one. Right to head in towards the
- 38:55Speaker 3: end of my career and Kim Green and Vanessa aware
- 39:00Speaker 3: we're in our team and either they were still at
- 39:02Speaker 3: school or they were just out of school. They were
- 39:04Speaker 3: like seventeen or eighteen, and they just I just looked
- 39:07Speaker 3: at the Not every netball season is like this, right,
- 39:13Speaker 3: I reckon they might have still been in school, which
- 39:14Speaker 3: just speaks to how extraordinary they were. Like they used
- 39:17Speaker 3: to turn for training in their school uniforms, and I
- 39:19Speaker 3: was thirty one.
- 39:19Speaker 4: I was like Jesus way too.
- 39:24Speaker 3: It's not until year older that you've really appreciated. So
- 39:27Speaker 3: someone like Kira has had to work so.
- 39:29Speaker 4: Hard for this.
- 39:29Speaker 3: She's changed clubs, she's really chased it, so it will
- 39:32Speaker 3: mean so much to her.
- 39:34Speaker 1: And they lost the Grand Final last year, like just yeah, yeah, amazing.
- 39:38Speaker 1: So Simono's indicated that she said, I'm a coach, That's
- 39:41Speaker 1: what I do. So I guess you know she's not
- 39:45Speaker 1: she's leaving that job. She's not leaving the sport she'll take.
- 39:48Speaker 1: I assume she's going to take a season off, like
- 39:50Speaker 1: you know.
- 39:51Speaker 2: Well, you don't know. There's a Giants job there that
- 39:53Speaker 2: needs a coach. But so today's the starting of that.
- 39:56Speaker 2: It'll be a free for all. The next three weeks
- 40:00Speaker 2: will be hectic, and I think we'll start to see
- 40:02Speaker 2: a stack of announcements come. Like if you're on your socials,
- 40:06Speaker 2: stuff will be happening, because there still hasn't been a
- 40:08Speaker 2: whole heap of like your own players and your own
- 40:10Speaker 2: team announcements, so that would have been happening prior. I'd
- 40:14Speaker 2: imagine a lot of those are locked and loaded, but
- 40:16Speaker 2: those announcements haven't happened either. I think people just waiting
- 40:18Speaker 2: for the Grand Final to be done. So I reckon
- 40:20Speaker 2: there's going to be a flood of them.
- 40:21Speaker 1: So fun the Thunderbed's going to look very different next year,
- 40:24Speaker 1: aren't they. You know, Sarah meldis gone, Hannah Petty's gone.
- 40:27Speaker 1: That'll be really interesting to see what happens there.
- 40:30Speaker 2: Will Shimira will be back, so that's a big bonus
- 40:32Speaker 2: for them. She was signed. Yeah, yep, yep, Yes, it's exciting.
- 40:36Speaker 2: And I reckon there's going to be a few Kiwi's,
- 40:38Speaker 2: there'll be a few silver Ferns. It'll make their way
- 40:41Speaker 2: over here. Where they end up, I don't know, but yeah,
- 40:44Speaker 2: I can't wait to see all that unfold.
- 40:46Speaker 1: But before that, we have the Diamonds and strong Vixen
- 40:48Speaker 1: Strong Diamonds. That's I mean, that's my unexpert view, but
- 40:52Speaker 1: it looks to be. You know, it's like, if the
- 40:54Speaker 1: Vixa's looking that good, it's looking good for the Diamonds too.
- 40:58Speaker 4: Well, I think you're right, you know.
- 40:59Speaker 3: So the Yeah, so the Vixens won that Grand Final
- 41:01Speaker 3: with no overseas player, correct, Yeah.
- 41:04Speaker 2: The only team that doesn't have an import right and
- 41:07Speaker 2: the only team that's used their contracted ten and no
- 41:10Speaker 2: extras this year? Well, they they had before the semi,
- 41:15Speaker 2: the prelim.
- 41:16Speaker 1: I guess that's a good fortune as much as anything, though,
- 41:19Speaker 1: isn't it. They haven't had any massive injuries and the like,
- 41:22Speaker 1: so but yeah, how amazing. And obviously I have a
- 41:26Speaker 1: Vixen scarf now that proves that I've been on the
- 41:28Speaker 1: Vixens train since the beginning. So I no correspondence will
- 41:32Speaker 1: the end into but yeah, this is an exciting three weeks.
- 41:35Speaker 4: The beginning of this week, since.
- 41:38Speaker 1: The beginning of the celebrations after the game. But thanks
- 41:41Speaker 1: Luise for my scarf, and thanks Vixen's for welcoming us
- 41:44Speaker 1: all into your city.
- 41:45Speaker 2: It was it was found so good this weekend.
- 41:55Speaker 1: Okay, so what happens this week for you? Catherine? Do
- 41:58Speaker 1: you get to have a little rest? I do.
- 42:00Speaker 2: I have got a big rest and I'm looking forward
- 42:03Speaker 2: to it. I've got to coach my netball team tonight.
- 42:04Speaker 2: I'd rather set my hair on fire it And then yes,
- 42:07Speaker 2: I'm going to just get stuck into my girls. We've
- 42:10Speaker 2: got finals coming up. I think we've got two more
- 42:11Speaker 2: weeks of rounds and then they're into the finals and
- 42:14Speaker 2: hopefully we'll play the finals. We've had that many games
- 42:16Speaker 2: rained out this year, but we'll see how we go.
- 42:18Speaker 2: So that's exciting a little bit of downtime, and then
- 42:20Speaker 2: October's our big stuff when the Internationals are on.
- 42:23Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think the Diamonds tickets go on sale
- 42:25Speaker 1: this week, Liz, Is that right?
- 42:27Speaker 4: I think so.
- 42:27Speaker 3: They were supposed to be on sale in a couple
- 42:29Speaker 3: of weeks time, but I think our team's working to
- 42:31Speaker 3: bring that forward.
- 42:32Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 42:32Speaker 1: Fantastic. So everyone get around that buy tickets. And I
- 42:35Speaker 1: cannot tell you if you ever get an opportunity to
- 42:39Speaker 1: go to a Super Netball Grand Final, grab that opportunity
- 42:42Speaker 1: with both hands. It was just it was such an
- 42:45Speaker 1: extraordinary night.
- 42:46Speaker 2: It was.
- 42:48Speaker 1: From several kilometers away, as you say, the whole city
- 42:52Speaker 1: was full of people in their merch there for a
- 42:54Speaker 1: good time. Netball crowds are just really nice. There's none
- 42:58Speaker 1: of the niggle that you get in some of the
- 42:59Speaker 1: other sports if you see someone who's wearing the opposition
- 43:03Speaker 1: colors or whatever. It was just I just thought it
- 43:05Speaker 1: was a fabulous weekend and I wish I could do
- 43:08Speaker 1: it again after a few days.
- 43:10Speaker 2: Rest agreed.
- 43:11Speaker 1: So Liz, you're at home for a couple of weeks. Kath,
- 43:14Speaker 1: you've got some time off. Now I'm what the hell
- 43:17Speaker 1: am I doing? Apparently I'm coaching again tonight. We've got
- 43:20Speaker 1: one more game left. We've got to buy this weekend
- 43:22Speaker 1: so we can't lose this weekend my under twelves, which
- 43:25Speaker 1: is good.
- 43:25Speaker 2: And then finals.
- 43:27Speaker 1: I know that's where Mad Monday girls. Yeah, were are fun.
- 43:33Speaker 2: Actually, I should think about that. I might do that
- 43:35Speaker 2: with my team to do a little something.
- 43:37Speaker 1: I'm not inviting my team to Mad Monday. That's something
- 43:39Speaker 1: I'm just planning to do with yourself. You can come,
- 43:46Speaker 1: oh my god, but everyone, have a great week watch
- 43:49Speaker 1: out for some interesting signings. Get around the Facebook group,
- 43:52Speaker 1: and please, if you enjoy this podcast, and I know
- 43:56Speaker 1: from how many people stop me during the weekend at
- 43:59Speaker 1: the Grand Final, well I know that you enjoy this
- 44:02Speaker 1: group and this community, please share it. We really need to.
- 44:04Speaker 1: We need to scale this podcast in order to sort
- 44:07Speaker 1: of make it work. We are very committed to our little, happy,
- 44:11Speaker 1: little community that we have built here. But please share
- 44:14Speaker 1: the podcast. Please invite your friends to join the Facebook group.
- 44:18Speaker 1: Please get involved in the chat. But we're building something
- 44:21Speaker 1: very special here, but we need to we need to
- 44:23Speaker 1: share it and build it, so please share it. Rate it?
- 44:26Speaker 1: Oh yeah, rate the podcast too. That's good. If we
- 44:28Speaker 1: get lots of good ratings, Apple might bump us up
- 44:30Speaker 1: and few more people might see the podcast. But yeah,
- 44:33Speaker 1: that's the end of that little infomercial there. So yeah,
- 44:36Speaker 1: I'm going to go and find another cup of coffee
- 44:39Speaker 1: to get through the day. I'm Carolyn Swindell.
- 44:41Speaker 2: I'm Cathcops. I might do that too that.
- 44:44Speaker 4: I'm definitely doing that.
