Transcript
- 0:00SPEAKER_00: Let's talk a little Lucas body.
- 0:01SPEAKER_00: I always do this Floyd Schofield, Lucas body.
- 0:05SPEAKER_00: Obviously, there's a weight thing.
- 0:06SPEAKER_00: Obviously, I look super burnt out.
- 0:08SPEAKER_00: That is because I am doing adult stuff right now.
- 0:11SPEAKER_00: Well, not right now, but I did adult stuff all day today.
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: The burnt out house husband look is in and I look super bald up top.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Be sure to hit the heart button.
- 0:20SPEAKER_00: Let me know what you think.
- 0:22SPEAKER_00: So for those that are living under a rock and I assume,
- 0:25SPEAKER_00: let me double check just to make sure I can hear myself
- 0:27SPEAKER_00: because I've had tech issues all throughout today.
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: You know what?
- 0:33SPEAKER_00: We're just going to pretend...
- 0:36SPEAKER_00: That it's working.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Okay.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: Yes, the sound is good.
- 0:38SPEAKER_00: Thank you, Anderson Perez.
- 0:39SPEAKER_00: And Anderson, if you want to jump on and you got free time, feel free to jump on over.
- 0:43SPEAKER_00: We love it.
- 0:45SPEAKER_00: I want to give my initial thoughts because a lot of people called my phone today
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: and were like, what do you make of this?
- 0:49SPEAKER_00: I'm going to pretend even though everyone on this chat and everyone listening after
- 0:54SPEAKER_00: the fact is super smart.
- 0:56SPEAKER_00: These are the smartest people in boxing, in my opinion, are the people that follow my Substack.
- 1:02SPEAKER_00: Schofield initially comes in 0.6 overweight.
- 1:06SPEAKER_00: I believe the reasoning and rationale that I heard through a Fight Hub TV interview,
- 1:12SPEAKER_00: which is one of the industry leaders, was that he woke up late.
- 1:15SPEAKER_00: He didn't jog it off.
- 1:16SPEAKER_00: He went to the bathroom and it totally was a non-issue.
- 1:19SPEAKER_00: Okay, it happens, right?
- 1:20SPEAKER_00: And I think that there's a bigger contention we'll get into maybe with
- 1:24SPEAKER_00: a fighter like Asa Stevens, who we'll talk about in a minute.
- 1:27SPEAKER_00: You know, Asa Stevens...
- 1:28SPEAKER_00: Also had trouble making weight from what I hear.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: And then he pushed his opponent,
- 1:32SPEAKER_00: which I,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: his opponents,
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: local guy,
- 1:34SPEAKER_00: maybe he was talking,
- 1:35SPEAKER_00: but I also feel like you're kind of fighting yourself in those instances,
- 1:38SPEAKER_00: but we'll get to that.
- 1:39SPEAKER_00: The, um, so body or not body, Scofield makes weight.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: There's a rehydration, 10 pounds.
- 1:46SPEAKER_00: I believe it's in the morning from the conversations and the way people are framing it tomorrow.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: He'll step on the scale.
- 1:54SPEAKER_00: And they will fight or not fight.
- 1:57SPEAKER_00: They'll make sure he has to be,
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I believe, 145 is the number 10 pounds over a championship weight.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: Body came in at 134.
- 2:05SPEAKER_00: Honestly,
- 2:06SPEAKER_00: that's about what I'm looking for from a championship weight from guys
- 2:10SPEAKER_00: who have never fought for a world title.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: That's kind of what I want to see.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: I want to see somebody that's never fought for a belt,
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: really almost overtrain and come in on that lower end of the weight.
- 2:21SPEAKER_00: When Floyd Schofield came in,
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: the first thing I thought was not a bad thing,
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: but like, you know, he's not all that active as a fighter.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 2:30SPEAKER_00: And with Schofield, he's 23, I believe, maybe a little bit older, maybe a little younger.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: But, you know, the body grows, you know, the body's not a finite.
- 2:41SPEAKER_00: It's it's changing,
- 2:43SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 2:44SPEAKER_00: and the first thing I thought was maybe this is the same old same weight cut and
- 2:47SPEAKER_00: the body isn't the same old same.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: So if you look at Schofield, he is really in tip top shape.
- 2:52SPEAKER_00: He's really, really fit, strong, carries a lot of muscle.
- 2:56SPEAKER_00: But part of me wonders,
- 2:58SPEAKER_00: is this going to be is he pushing the limits of a lightweight frame at this point
- 3:03SPEAKER_00: in his age because he looks pretty dense.
- 3:06SPEAKER_00: So that was something I thought.
- 3:08SPEAKER_00: But then I'm also thinking about something else, and this is Lukie Deep, amateur boxing nerd.
- 3:15SPEAKER_00: Schofield,
- 3:16SPEAKER_00: from my memory,
- 3:17SPEAKER_00: and this is terrible,
- 3:18SPEAKER_00: I remember that he fought Rasheem Jefferson Jr.,
- 3:21SPEAKER_00: one of my favorite amateurs,
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: who you guys will never see as a pro because of just unfortunate stuff.
- 3:26SPEAKER_00: And I believe he had a disqualification loss in that amateur tournament.
- 3:31SPEAKER_00: And I know Charles Lolo Harris beat him in the amateurs.
- 3:34SPEAKER_00: And Lolo,
- 3:35SPEAKER_00: when Lolo does his thing,
- 3:37SPEAKER_00: especially as an amateur boxer,
- 3:38SPEAKER_00: move around, touch you, it's hard to get in the bag against a guy like Lolo.
- 3:42SPEAKER_00: He's a tough cookie.
- 3:44SPEAKER_00: But that being said, disqualifications in amateur fights don't happen all that much.
- 3:49SPEAKER_00: And they don't happen in national tournaments.
- 3:52SPEAKER_00: And I vaguely feel like he had a few of those
- 3:55SPEAKER_00: because I feel like I heard people talking and maybe they were talking mess
- 3:59SPEAKER_00: and maybe I should do, you know what?
- 4:01SPEAKER_00: This is unfounded.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: Let me go and actually do research.
- 4:05SPEAKER_00: I'm just terrified because I'm doing the dual stream thing right now
- 4:09SPEAKER_00: and it crapped out on me earlier today and I almost had a panic attack.
- 4:13SPEAKER_00: So let's not be lazy.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Let's go.
- 4:15SPEAKER_00: Floyd Schofield, Box Wreck Gangster.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: Let's go in here.
- 4:20SPEAKER_00: So I was right.
- 4:21SPEAKER_00: Rasheem Jefferson, Disqualification, Wisconsin.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: That was 2019 June.
- 4:26SPEAKER_00: Let's see if there's a couple more.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: Dorian Khan, disqualification, 2018.
- 4:33SPEAKER_00: Then he lost.
- 4:34SPEAKER_00: He beat Adolfo Gomez by disqualification.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: So there's like a pattern of disqualifications.
- 4:39SPEAKER_00: And there's another one, Miguel Santana.
- 4:40SPEAKER_00: So he does have.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: And I know people are saying, what are you bringing up these amateur disqualifications for?
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: Well, I'm bringing up the amateur disqualifications for is with Schofield,
- 4:50SPEAKER_00: it's always this fight is going to be about focus, right?
- 4:55SPEAKER_00: Just, you know, bodies doesn't bring to the table, at least to me, from what I've seen a body.
- 5:00SPEAKER_00: He doesn't bring the athletic attributes.
- 5:03SPEAKER_00: He doesn't bring the gifts that may be...
- 5:08SPEAKER_00: Schofield does.
- 5:10SPEAKER_00: I don't know if he hits as hard because they're both really big punchers,
- 5:12SPEAKER_00: but I think that Schofield's probably more of an athlete.
- 5:14SPEAKER_00: He's got more dynamic things he can do.
- 5:17SPEAKER_00: But for Schofield and for many very elite,
- 5:21SPEAKER_00: I would say kind of the sport maybe comes a little easier to them,
- 5:24SPEAKER_00: more coordinated, athletic people.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: The hardest thing is focus, right?
- 5:28SPEAKER_00: And those disqualifications in the amateurs...
- 5:31SPEAKER_00: Are something that I keep going back to because with body,
- 5:35SPEAKER_00: he reminds me of Claudio Moreo who fought Xavier Martinez,
- 5:39SPEAKER_00: who I know pretty darn well from Sacramento.
- 5:42SPEAKER_00: And Moreo to me,
- 5:44SPEAKER_00: Xavier was doing really good and he just took him into that eighth round
- 5:47SPEAKER_00: and he dropped him twice.
- 5:48SPEAKER_00: And then Xavier righted the ship, won the fight.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: But Moreo took him into that deep end and was trying to stop him late.
- 5:55SPEAKER_00: And with fighters like this,
- 5:59SPEAKER_00: I think Schofield,
- 6:02SPEAKER_00: the difficulty of this fight for him,
- 6:04SPEAKER_00: it's his fight to win and lose because he has more attributes, right?
- 6:08SPEAKER_00: But now you have this bull crap of the weigh-in.
- 6:12SPEAKER_00: You got an extra weigh-in tomorrow, which isn't great, right?
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: Because that's more stuff to deal with,
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: more stuff to ponder, more stuff to think about, mind races, etc.,
- 6:25SPEAKER_00: But this fight is about focus, right?
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: This fight is the equivalent.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: It's a world championship fight that's the equivalent of jumping rope for 36 minutes straight.
- 6:36SPEAKER_00: You can't take your eye off the ball because if you take your eye off the ball,
- 6:40SPEAKER_00: if you take your foot,
- 6:42SPEAKER_00: your focus,
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: your anything, you're in trouble because not Schofield, body is waiting, bro.
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: He's waiting for that one moment for you to Bring your jab hand low and then he'll attack.
- 6:59SPEAKER_00: He did it to Sylve.
- 7:00SPEAKER_00: And I think now,
- 7:02SPEAKER_00: albeit he's working with a new coach,
- 7:04SPEAKER_00: maybe that's going to change some things of his style.
- 7:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe what I'm saying isn't true.
- 7:08SPEAKER_00: But to me,
- 7:09SPEAKER_00: body is someone who And we all learn things in fights,
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: whether you're a writer,
- 7:15SPEAKER_00: whether you're a boxer,
- 7:16SPEAKER_00: we all learn things, trainers, and we all pick up on something.
- 7:19SPEAKER_00: And sometimes it's right and sometimes it's wrong.
- 7:21SPEAKER_00: And that's how you literally get a bad habit.
- 7:23SPEAKER_00: I'm over explaining, but it's trying to lead to a point and make it fascinating.
- 7:26SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:27SPEAKER_00: One man show.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: And I've done this podcast probably about two times already.
- 7:31SPEAKER_00: And I'm doing another podcast in 30 minutes because I'm sicko.
- 7:34SPEAKER_00: But it's the love of the game.
- 7:36SPEAKER_00: This is these are my club fights.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 7:39SPEAKER_00: These are my club fights.
- 7:40SPEAKER_00: I'm on the bench doing my club show fights and
- 7:43SPEAKER_01: we're doing it.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: With body, when he knocks out Sylve.
- 7:50SPEAKER_00: That, I feel like, confirmed to him, okay, if I'm patient, this style works.
- 7:56SPEAKER_00: And he was essentially losing the fight,
- 7:57SPEAKER_00: but he was putting on educated pressure with Sylv that set up the knockout.
- 8:01SPEAKER_00: And I think that was a gift and a curse because his very next performance,
- 8:05SPEAKER_00: I believe, was a majority decision.
- 8:06SPEAKER_00: I thought he won the fight.
- 8:07SPEAKER_00: It was on Jake Paul, Mike Tyson.
- 8:09SPEAKER_00: But it was a very anticlimactic performance.
- 8:12SPEAKER_00: It was an anticlimactic fight.
- 8:15SPEAKER_00: It wasn't a spectacular performance.
- 8:16SPEAKER_00: And honestly,
- 8:17SPEAKER_00: I thought coming off of that big performance,
- 8:19SPEAKER_00: signing with MVP, I wanted to see more.
- 8:22SPEAKER_00: And to be perfectly honest with you,
- 8:23SPEAKER_00: if Lucas body kept fighting and didn't get a world title shot,
- 8:26SPEAKER_00: he inevitably would lose at least fighting the way he was
- 8:29SPEAKER_00: because his punch out puts too low.
- 8:31SPEAKER_00: Now for Schofield,
- 8:33SPEAKER_00: He looked amazing against Tevin Farmer,
- 8:35SPEAKER_00: but what people forget is Rene's Telliz Karan,
- 8:39SPEAKER_00: who's much busier,
- 8:40SPEAKER_00: more active in your face,
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: built like a fire hydrant, knocked out Carlos Balderos, always reinvents himself.
- 8:46SPEAKER_00: He dropped Schofield in the late rounds.
- 8:49SPEAKER_00: There's a little bit of panic.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: Schofield, I believe, missed the stool, right?
- 8:55SPEAKER_00: So for me...
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: This fight is all about, and how are we doing, Hardenar?
- 9:00SPEAKER_00: Thank you for jumping on the stream right now.
- 9:02SPEAKER_00: We appreciate you.
- 9:05SPEAKER_00: For me, this fight is really about can Schofield – it's not just
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: about – I think everyone's going to be like,
- 9:11SPEAKER_00: okay, it's about talent and focus and this and that.
- 9:13SPEAKER_00: Or I mean talent and ability and X's and O's.
- 9:17SPEAKER_00: There's going to be a level of that.
- 9:19SPEAKER_00: But there's also a level of Schofield's probably quicker.
- 9:23SPEAKER_00: Schofield's probably got more tools.
- 9:27SPEAKER_00: But can he work within himself with what body gives him
- 9:31SPEAKER_00: to just win – He's like Marquez in that sense.
- 9:34SPEAKER_00: And he also isn't crazy.
- 9:53SPEAKER_00: He's actually weird.
- 9:56SPEAKER_00: Lukie says,
- 9:57SPEAKER_00: Lucas body fights like Marquez,
- 9:59SPEAKER_00: which isn't true per se,
- 10:01SPEAKER_00: but there is a comparison to body in the sense that body's a low output version
- 10:06SPEAKER_00: of Marquez where he's very accurate and he uses his punches kind of like his words
- 10:12SPEAKER_00: in interviews where he doesn't use them.
- 10:16SPEAKER_00: He doesn't just do a one man podcast.
- 10:18SPEAKER_00: It's a very,
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: very short I don't love a guy going into his first world title fight
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: with it happening, but you know, things happen.
- 10:44SPEAKER_00: Now there's going to be lingering anxiety questions around tomorrow's weigh-in.
- 10:48SPEAKER_00: It's probably going to be a non-issue.
- 10:49SPEAKER_00: They're probably both going to come in.
- 10:51SPEAKER_00: But it always feels like with Schofield, there's lingering things going on.
- 10:56SPEAKER_00: There's outside distractions.
- 10:58SPEAKER_00: When he fought Shakur Stevenson, there were outside distractions.
- 11:00SPEAKER_00: Before the Silva fight, he gets injured.
- 11:02SPEAKER_00: Always feels like there's outside distractions.
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: And with body distractions, It feels like he gives you no bulletin board material.
- 11:08SPEAKER_00: He gives you no motivation to do better against him.
- 11:12SPEAKER_00: He's very plain, shows up, and he can really fight.
- 11:16SPEAKER_00: I think what makes this fight so interesting is...
- 11:19SPEAKER_00: Body, to me, is somewhat of an overachiever who's very humble.
- 11:24SPEAKER_00: And Schofield is someone that fits the traditional star in America that a lot
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: of writers and promoters want to build a guy as.
- 11:33SPEAKER_00: He has all the traits.
- 11:35SPEAKER_00: You see the power.
- 11:36SPEAKER_00: You see the athleticism.
- 11:38SPEAKER_00: You see the personality between him and his dad.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: It is what people like to promote.
- 11:43SPEAKER_00: And yet we have questions.
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: Can he do it?
- 11:45SPEAKER_00: You know, he's in this big high profile position.
- 11:48SPEAKER_00: Let's talk real quick about this undercard.
- 11:50SPEAKER_00: Ricardo Sandoval is returning.
- 11:52SPEAKER_00: I really wanted to see him in with Oscar Collazo.
- 11:56SPEAKER_00: I have questions around Collazo.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: I think he's a very good fighter,
- 11:59SPEAKER_00: but I think we've anointed him as a star and a pound for pound level guy
- 12:05SPEAKER_00: when he's Let's go deep nerd on you.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: Yabuki, the flyweight, he's a pretty good guy.
- 12:09SPEAKER_00: Ricardo Sandoval versus Yabuki could make the case for a pound for pound level fighter.
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: So for me, Colazo looks the part, but I don't love Yabuki.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: A non-multidivision world champion who fights at 105 pounds,
- 12:25SPEAKER_00: who gets hit a lot and uses his physicality as a weapon.
- 12:29SPEAKER_00: I don't necessarily love the idea of just throwing him into the pound for pound list.
- 12:33SPEAKER_00: And then just,
- 12:34SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 12:35SPEAKER_00: once a guy goes in the pound for pound list,
- 12:36SPEAKER_00: I just feel like people just, oh yeah, he's pound for pound guy.
- 12:40SPEAKER_00: And there's no reason because to me,
- 12:41SPEAKER_00: someone like my guy,
- 12:42SPEAKER_00: Oshaki Foster, Man,
- 12:44SPEAKER_00: he's got a lot of good wins and people act like it's unheard of to put him
- 12:47SPEAKER_00: at like eight or seven.
- 12:49SPEAKER_00: And I think Shock Foster is really high on this fictional pound for pound list.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: He's one of the top fighters in the sport.
- 12:55SPEAKER_00: So I wanted to see What type of fighter Colaza was
- 13:00SPEAKER_00: because Ricardo Sandoval is naturally bigger.
- 13:02SPEAKER_00: I think it was probably a bad matchup in theory unless Colaza was special
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: because Sandoval,
- 13:07SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 13:08SPEAKER_00: obviously early in his career, he fought my guy, Brent Venegas, won a close fight.
- 13:12SPEAKER_00: Brent actually dropped him, followed Sandoval's career for a very long time.
- 13:16SPEAKER_00: He's been a kind of a road warrior overachiever who now is
- 13:20SPEAKER_00: a unified champion who'd beat Kenshiro Taraji,
- 13:23SPEAKER_00: who I like to call the guy that runs into you.
- 13:25SPEAKER_00: And just kind of has a style only a mother could love.
- 13:28SPEAKER_00: And I wanted to see that fight because it's like it answers a lot of questions.
- 13:32SPEAKER_00: You know, Sandoval's been up and down.
- 13:35SPEAKER_00: Big physical guy.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: Wouldn't surprise me if he got old overnight.
- 13:38SPEAKER_00: And then Collazo's been anointed as this top-notch pound-for-pound level guy.
- 13:43SPEAKER_00: But he fights at 105 pounds when he knocked out the long-reigning Thai champion two years ago.
- 13:49SPEAKER_00: On that golden boy card, and I think it was Saudi.
- 13:52SPEAKER_00: It's a big win, but then it's like every fight since then has been inconsequential.
- 13:56SPEAKER_00: I've been disappointed in his lack of unification bouts.
- 13:59SPEAKER_00: Against Sandoval, that was good.
- 14:00SPEAKER_00: When he gets injured, I don't really, I'm not very excited about this fight.
- 14:04SPEAKER_00: Obviously, Jamal Harvey, I think the world of him, he's in with a guy who's got a good record.
- 14:11SPEAKER_00: But let's be honest, at this point, Jamal...
- 14:15SPEAKER_00: Jamal's going to be tough, right?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Because I think he's one of the fastest fighters in the lightweight division,
- 14:19SPEAKER_00: especially coming off his Olympic run in 2024.
- 14:22SPEAKER_00: He hits really hard and he's not satisfied.
- 14:26SPEAKER_00: Jamal's not satisfied with being an undercard fighter.
- 14:29SPEAKER_00: He's not satisfied being like, okay, this is good.
- 14:31SPEAKER_00: I'm here.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: He wants more.
- 14:34SPEAKER_00: So I think the dangerous thing about a guy like Jamal Harvey is he's not like,
- 14:37SPEAKER_00: man, I can't wait to go on this show.
- 14:38SPEAKER_00: He doesn't love being on these co-features.
- 14:42SPEAKER_00: He's ready to make his mark.
- 14:44SPEAKER_00: And the thing no one talks about with Jamal is...
- 14:47SPEAKER_00: Pro debut, everyone's watching Olympian.
- 14:49SPEAKER_00: I believe his second fight was at Madison Square Garden.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Third fight or so was a big TikTok card with Amanda Serrano.
- 14:58SPEAKER_00: I know that sounds hilarious.
- 14:59SPEAKER_00: Big TikTok card, but it was a big TikTok card.
- 15:01SPEAKER_00: It was a big, he was moved up on the card.
- 15:03SPEAKER_00: So Jamal isn't just your average fighter.
- 15:06SPEAKER_00: He's in these high profile positions now.
- 15:09SPEAKER_00: That I think a lot of people don't realize.
- 15:13SPEAKER_00: He's handling being in pressure-filled spots as well as you can.
- 15:18SPEAKER_00: This week, me and Jason Langandor for The Good Fight, we interviewed Naomi Valle.
- 15:23SPEAKER_00: Shout out my girl, Naomi Valle.
- 15:25SPEAKER_00: She is in a good fight.
- 15:26SPEAKER_00: And the cool thing about that interview,
- 15:28SPEAKER_00: if you want to go check it out, her first English language interview.
- 15:31SPEAKER_00: She's training with Jose Benavidez Sr.
- 15:34SPEAKER_00: And I think that she's an interesting fighter to watch because...
- 15:38SPEAKER_00: There's a pretty big age gap between her and her sister,
- 15:40SPEAKER_00: Yo Costa Valle, but I think she wants to make her own name for herself.
- 15:46SPEAKER_00: And she's in a division where there's going to be fights.
- 15:50SPEAKER_00: And if she chooses to fight for a while,
- 15:52SPEAKER_00: she's someone where like,
- 15:54SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 15:55SPEAKER_00: Shariah L.
- 15:56SPEAKER_00: Brown, or is it Shariah Brown L., the great amateur who just signed with MVP.
- 16:00SPEAKER_00: This is a comparable opponent who Shariah just beat.
- 16:04SPEAKER_00: I mean, that's a fight down the road.
- 16:05SPEAKER_00: So that's a really good matchup.
- 16:07SPEAKER_00: That's an exciting fight.
- 16:08SPEAKER_00: The fight I really like is shout out to Shreveport,
- 16:11SPEAKER_00: Louisiana, where my guy Baz in the chat was with me.
- 16:14SPEAKER_00: We were roommates for that trip.
- 16:15SPEAKER_00: Mikey Dahlman fought on that card.
- 16:18SPEAKER_00: He was an undercard guy.
- 16:19SPEAKER_00: His manager was trying to sell him to everybody that was in the fighter hotel.
- 16:22SPEAKER_00: Really nice guy.
- 16:23SPEAKER_00: Well, he's fighting Grant Flores,
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: who I think Is probably the golden boy prospect that's kind of gotten gotten away
- 16:32SPEAKER_00: from people.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: He is in the similar vein.
- 16:35SPEAKER_00: Him and Jose Tito Sanchez are kind of those Ryan Garcia,
- 16:39SPEAKER_00: Virgil Ortiz, Floyd Schofield homegrown.
- 16:43SPEAKER_00: They would fight on a Thursday night show and build up into a main event guy.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: Grant Flores has a tremendous motor.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: He's a really good Mexican pressure fighter from the Coachella Valley.
- 16:55SPEAKER_00: And I am really excited to see this matchup
- 16:58SPEAKER_00: because Mikey Dallman sure he's had some losses,
- 17:00SPEAKER_00: but like whenever you meet someone, you're like, okay, that's good.
- 17:03SPEAKER_00: And Flores, you know, I went down.
- 17:04SPEAKER_00: I was at the time we, it was Eric priest versus her coward.
- 17:10SPEAKER_00: And I got a travel budget to go cover the golden boy show at commerce casino.
- 17:15SPEAKER_00: And I remember he was the person that stood out most.
- 17:18SPEAKER_00: It was him and Caden Griffins were the two big standouts.
- 17:21SPEAKER_00: And it's crazy to think in a couple of months, that's going to be two years ago.
- 17:25SPEAKER_00: I got a call.
- 17:26SPEAKER_00: Hey, can you go down to this show?
- 17:27SPEAKER_00: It's like, okay, we'll do it.
- 17:29SPEAKER_00: Got to always do that when you get the calls.
- 17:31SPEAKER_00: Let me look over this.
- 17:32SPEAKER_00: Oh, Asa Stevens.
- 17:33SPEAKER_00: I teased that at the top.
- 17:35SPEAKER_00: Asa Stevens comes in on weight, but he's coming off a draw.
- 17:39SPEAKER_00: I think he's one of these guys that maybe doesn't have a weight class.
- 17:43SPEAKER_00: Not fully sure what weight he's fighting at.
- 17:45SPEAKER_00: Really good amateur.
- 17:47SPEAKER_00: His career has never really gotten off the ground, if you ask me.
- 17:50SPEAKER_00: He's kind of always been stop-start, never gotten the fights in.
- 17:55SPEAKER_00: From Hawaii, I believe he's now training in Las Vegas, etc.
- 17:58SPEAKER_00: He's fighting a guy, undefeated local guy.
- 18:01SPEAKER_00: If you look at the guy he's fighting,
- 18:03SPEAKER_00: let me see the guy's name because I'm so scared to leave this.
- 18:05SPEAKER_00: I'm so scared to leave this.
- 18:06SPEAKER_00: I'm so scared.
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: I think it's going to freeze and then I'm going to get kicked out.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: He's fighting Christian Williams in this fight.
- 18:13SPEAKER_00: And it's a good fight.
- 18:15SPEAKER_00: And Asa Stevens is a guy who I think, if anything, is boring.
- 18:21SPEAKER_00: I always think of him like Dallas Calipio,
- 18:23SPEAKER_00: where they were just kind of indifferent, boring interviews.
- 18:26SPEAKER_00: Him being fired up kind of surprised Beto.
- 18:29SPEAKER_00: I feel as though this is a real test of a fight.
- 18:33SPEAKER_00: I wouldn't think that because Williams on paper isn't as talented as him.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: But let me look at the weight class this is at.
- 18:42SPEAKER_00: Um, because his last fight that was a draw was at 128.
- 18:46SPEAKER_00: He didn't look all that great against Jurin Dananjian,
- 18:50SPEAKER_00: which I'm sure I said that absolutely perfectly right.
- 18:53SPEAKER_00: Box Rec has to confirm I'm a human and not AI.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: So this research is going to,
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: this little research project is going to take a little slower than we got
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: to do it twice.
- 19:04SPEAKER_00: Uh, let's see what, wait, actually, you know what?
- 19:06SPEAKER_00: It's in my email too, but we'll just look and see.
- 19:10SPEAKER_00: Um,
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Asa Stevens was a really good amateur at flyweight.
- 19:20SPEAKER_00: And it's kind of tricky when these guys are real,
- 19:22SPEAKER_00: real young and they have success at flyweight and then they have
- 19:25SPEAKER_00: to figure out what their pro weight division is.
- 19:27SPEAKER_00: And he's a little bit stocky.
- 19:29SPEAKER_00: I'm curious to see how that fight goes.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Not because I think Williams is going to be a blue chip prospect,
- 19:33SPEAKER_00: but it's also like, what's the evolution of Asa Stevens at this point?
- 19:38SPEAKER_00: Now let's flip over to some talking points that I'm going to do before we get out of here.
- 19:42SPEAKER_00: Canelo and Billy undercard was announced.
- 19:45SPEAKER_00: And though I'm not,
- 19:46SPEAKER_00: I don't even,
- 19:47SPEAKER_00: I'm not even going to bring up the name of the opponent of Jaime Munguia,
- 19:50SPEAKER_00: but Jaime Munguia, what are you doing?
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: Honestly, Jaime Munguia, what are we doing here?
- 19:55SPEAKER_00: Because Jaime Munguia is fighting an opponent that I am unclear who he is.
- 20:01SPEAKER_00: And I do boxing podcasts and I talk about boxing and I love boxing.
- 20:06SPEAKER_00: And I am unsure who this guy is that he's fighting.
- 20:09SPEAKER_00: And by the way,
- 20:10SPEAKER_00: Beck the Bully, Beck Demir Martezuliev, beat Darius Fulgrim, I want to say May 2025.
- 20:19SPEAKER_00: I know that I watched Frank and Weenie,
- 20:21SPEAKER_00: the Tim Burton remake of that movie, the night that it happened.
- 20:25SPEAKER_00: And I cried.
- 20:26SPEAKER_00: I cried at the end of Frank and Weenie.
- 20:28SPEAKER_00: Spoiler.
- 20:29SPEAKER_00: And this is unacceptable, right?
- 20:32SPEAKER_00: And I saw that the WBA is saying that they're going to They're going to review it
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: or whatever, some form of that.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: But we need to, like, this is the problem, right?
- 20:42SPEAKER_00: Because people are saying, okay, what about UBOs?
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: These promoters can hold the belts.
- 20:47SPEAKER_00: But the sanctioning bodies have to make sense of stuff, right?
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Like Tyson Fury versus Anthony Joshua.
- 20:53SPEAKER_00: Why is Murray Agassi of getting demoted?
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: Oh, and by the way,
- 20:57SPEAKER_00: why was Murray Agassi of In a fight,
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: a title fight, he had just lost to Otto Wallin not that long ago.
- 21:05SPEAKER_00: What were the grounds for him being rated so highly?
- 21:07SPEAKER_00: What were the accomplishments?
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: Why did he get this position?
- 21:11SPEAKER_00: And then as soon as he wins the belt,
- 21:15SPEAKER_00: which probably, you know, he most vulnerable guy in the division, right?
- 21:19SPEAKER_00: Everyone's going to probably call out that guy
- 21:21SPEAKER_00: because they think everybody will be like, oh, I can beat him.
- 21:24SPEAKER_00: Then all of a sudden now you've got Fury versus Joshua.
- 21:30SPEAKER_00: For a WBA belt.
- 21:31SPEAKER_00: It's silly.
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: And now in this one,
- 21:32SPEAKER_00: you've got,
- 21:34SPEAKER_00: you know, Jaime Munguia is fighting some guy and he has a mandatory defense.
- 21:38SPEAKER_00: Quite frankly,
- 21:40SPEAKER_00: if a title champion does not fulfill an obligation,
- 21:43SPEAKER_00: they should be stripped because they're not behaving like a champion.
- 21:46SPEAKER_00: It's not.
- 21:47SPEAKER_00: And this is what drives me nuts about the sport of boxing, right?
- 21:50SPEAKER_00: Is basic common sense things.
- 21:52SPEAKER_00: Like if you're a world champion and you have an obligation to defend your title to
- 21:56SPEAKER_00: the number one Title holder or the number one person in that division
- 22:01SPEAKER_00: and you're not doing it, it should be very simple.
- 22:04SPEAKER_00: You forfeit your belt.
- 22:06SPEAKER_00: But in boxing, sometimes we miss the plot and we don't do simple, basic things.
- 22:11SPEAKER_00: I'm really hoping that the most obvious answer is here,
- 22:15SPEAKER_00: that the belt is Stripped and Beck gets to fight in a consequential bout for a belt.
- 22:22SPEAKER_00: And I really don't, I don't like the idea of this.
- 22:25SPEAKER_00: I don't like the idea of this.
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: You know,
- 22:27SPEAKER_00: I don't like Jaime Munguia coming off one of his best wins against Armando Resendez,
- 22:33SPEAKER_00: kind of a win where you start to go, man, this guy, you know, he's a veteran.
- 22:37SPEAKER_00: He had years where he was overhyped because people love a guy that punches,
- 22:42SPEAKER_00: you know, he punches so hard and they go, he's Big puncher, big puncher guy.
- 22:47SPEAKER_00: And then, you know, he he almost loses to Dennis Hogan.
- 22:50SPEAKER_00: So you got to move him back to be a prospect and baby him for years because he makes money.
- 22:55SPEAKER_00: And then he evolves and he has a decent Canelo fight.
- 22:58SPEAKER_00: And you start to go, is he is he a top notch guy?
- 23:01SPEAKER_00: And then you get this bull crap and you go.
- 23:04SPEAKER_00: Maybe he was who we thought he was.
- 23:06SPEAKER_00: Maybe it's just back to that same old crap.
- 23:09SPEAKER_00: And that goes to another thing.
- 23:11SPEAKER_00: Silicius Iglesias is not that.
- 23:14SPEAKER_00: You know what he is?
- 23:15SPEAKER_00: He's the man.
- 23:16SPEAKER_00: And all these guys that are saying, okay, he's not fighting nobody or that.
- 23:20SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 23:21SPEAKER_00: That's fine.
- 23:22SPEAKER_00: All he's doing is last night he stops Oliver Zaran.
- 23:26SPEAKER_00: You could say Zaran won two rounds, maybe.
- 23:30SPEAKER_00: But to win those rounds, he had to take a beating.
- 23:34SPEAKER_00: Iglesias is so impressive to me because he's a Cuban boxer
- 23:37SPEAKER_00: who can fight off his front foot and his back foot.
- 23:39SPEAKER_00: He can beat you by boxing you, and he loves absolutely pummeling and bludgeoning you.
- 23:45SPEAKER_00: Last night, all he did was educated foot pressure.
- 23:48SPEAKER_00: Sure, Zoran might have been busier in the first two rounds,
- 23:51SPEAKER_00: but Iglesias didn't look like he had any inkling of wanting that fight to go long.
- 23:57SPEAKER_00: He wanted to beat him down.
- 23:59SPEAKER_00: He wanted to bloody him.
- 24:00SPEAKER_00: Sixth round, drops him twice.
- 24:01SPEAKER_00: Seventh round, towel comes in.
- 24:04SPEAKER_00: This comes after stopping Vladimir Shishkin.
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: Shishkin,
- 24:07SPEAKER_00: by the way,
- 24:08SPEAKER_00: fought Wilkins Matu on the undercard,
- 24:10SPEAKER_00: super middleweight, 21-year-old, and Matu looked lost.
- 24:14SPEAKER_00: He looked like a guy who just needed athleticism and being young to beat Shishkin.
- 24:20SPEAKER_00: Shishkin was out hustling him and busier.
- 24:23SPEAKER_00: Maybe Matu won a 6-4,
- 24:26SPEAKER_00: 96-94 type win,
- 24:28SPEAKER_00: but it was a drawish type fight where Shishkin was busy Showing veteran tactics,
- 24:34SPEAKER_00: and Mathieu was putting himself on the ropes,
- 24:36SPEAKER_00: looking to land kind of wild punches,
- 24:39SPEAKER_00: expecting the fight to turn around, and it didn't.
- 24:42SPEAKER_00: Iglesias, to me,
- 24:43SPEAKER_00: and maybe I'm overrating him,
- 24:45SPEAKER_00: and Anderson Perez, you're my guy, you could tell me because you interview him.
- 24:50SPEAKER_00: He looks the part of a number one pound for pound level guy.
- 24:54SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying he will be, but he has all those attributes.
- 24:58SPEAKER_00: And it kind of drives me nuts when you see someone who has the traits of
- 25:02SPEAKER_00: a Gennady Golovkin or traits of these of Nao in a way.
- 25:07SPEAKER_00: And he doesn't do the bull crap.
- 25:11SPEAKER_00: So you got a guy in an interesting division.
- 25:13SPEAKER_00: I know guys will end up fighting him.
- 25:16SPEAKER_00: But he's having to fight,
- 25:17SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 25:18SPEAKER_00: tough Eastern European guys because tough Eastern European guys are
- 25:21SPEAKER_00: the only ones signing up to fight him right now.
- 25:23SPEAKER_00: He's hoping for a unification bout against Billy and Canelo.
- 25:27SPEAKER_00: And, you know, they share the same promotion now in Billy and Iglesias.
- 25:32SPEAKER_00: And if both have belts, I'm sure it's possible.
- 25:35SPEAKER_00: But Iglesias looks like the goods.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: Just quite frankly.
- 25:38SPEAKER_00: And then you got you got other guys in the division.
- 25:41SPEAKER_00: You got Jaime Munguia with a WBA belt.
- 25:43SPEAKER_00: I'm sure that's if he's having trouble with Beck the bully,
- 25:46SPEAKER_00: that fight happening and who knows why.
- 25:48SPEAKER_00: Do you think he's going to sign up for Iglesias,
- 25:51SPEAKER_00: the guy that's just knocking everybody out and out thinking everybody?
- 25:55SPEAKER_00: You know, he's fighting power punchers and breaking them down.
- 25:57SPEAKER_00: He fought Evgeny Shevidenko,
- 25:59SPEAKER_00: who was trained by my good friend Eddie Croft, and stopped the guy in one round.
- 26:02SPEAKER_00: A guy who in his own right was on the verge of being an IBF title eliminator.
- 26:07SPEAKER_00: He's taken really, really good fighters and making them look like nobodies.
- 26:11SPEAKER_00: And that's something we don't see.
- 26:13SPEAKER_00: And what's even more impressive is he appeared out of thin air.
- 26:17SPEAKER_00: And I wrote the story on the good fight.
- 26:18SPEAKER_00: Read it at the good fight.
- 26:19SPEAKER_00: He appeared out of thin air like a magician.
- 26:22SPEAKER_00: Inglacius, I call him...
- 26:24SPEAKER_00: The rabbit in the hat boxer, because it's like he peered out of a hat.
- 26:29SPEAKER_00: He appeared out of a DAZN telecast.
- 26:32SPEAKER_00: When I was covering a fight on boxing scene,
- 26:34SPEAKER_00: he stops a guy in one round that had dropped Edgar Berlanga and gone rounds
- 26:37SPEAKER_00: with Diego Pacheco.
- 26:39SPEAKER_00: And he followed it up by knocking out Evgeny Shevdenko in one round.
- 26:42SPEAKER_00: Then he knocked out San Abeko.
- 26:44SPEAKER_00: And then he knocked out another guy who was unbeaten,
- 26:47SPEAKER_00: who was a German puncher, who's never fought since.
- 26:50SPEAKER_00: He's a scary, scary dude.
- 26:52SPEAKER_00: And I tell everybody to watch him.
- 26:55SPEAKER_00: Demetrius Anu was also on that Eye of the Tiger card.
- 26:58SPEAKER_00: Me and Dakota will talk about that this weekend.
- 27:00SPEAKER_00: He did all right.
- 27:01SPEAKER_00: But I think that we were a lot of us boxing nerds expected more from him.
- 27:05SPEAKER_00: And Luis Santana overachieved
- 27:07SPEAKER_00: and Leila Bodine retained her interim junior lightweight title WBA.
- 27:15SPEAKER_00: And if Bumgarner moves up, she will be a world champion and she has earned it.
- 27:21SPEAKER_00: She lost to Bumgarner,
- 27:22SPEAKER_00: but she has really become probably the best fighter not named Kira Tapia in
- 27:28SPEAKER_00: that division.
- 27:29SPEAKER_00: That's a super nerd women's boxing fight that I'd like to see is her versus Kira Tapia.
- 27:36SPEAKER_00: I'd really like to see that.
- 27:38SPEAKER_00: Now let me think, what are the other things I wanted to talk about today?
- 27:43SPEAKER_00: Tyson Fury, Anthony Joshua, tickets went on sale.
- 27:46SPEAKER_00: And in case you haven't heard, a lot of people want to see the fight.
- 27:49SPEAKER_00: Yes, the fight is a nostalgia act.
- 27:52SPEAKER_00: I compare it to the NES Classic.
- 27:54SPEAKER_00: You know, you get the NES Classic.
- 27:56SPEAKER_00: You plug it into your TV.
- 27:58SPEAKER_00: You play Battletoads.
- 27:59SPEAKER_00: But you know it's not quite as good as any of the games nowadays.
- 28:04SPEAKER_00: But you just want to remember what it was like being 9 or 10.
- 28:07SPEAKER_00: And maybe playing those games helped bring you to that point, you know.
- 28:12SPEAKER_00: And...
- 28:13SPEAKER_00: Whether we as maybe me as like a hardcore or whatever you want to call me a nerd
- 28:18SPEAKER_00: and many of the people that enjoy my content who are more specialists
- 28:22SPEAKER_00: and enjoy nuanced modern boxing or maybe even
- 28:26SPEAKER_00: the old stuff like we just like boxing stuff.
- 28:29SPEAKER_00: There's no way around it.
- 28:30SPEAKER_00: It's two old guys fighting, right?
- 28:32SPEAKER_00: It's two guys who are no longer.
- 28:35SPEAKER_00: Throw in the Nolan Ryan 100 mile an hour fastball.
- 28:38SPEAKER_00: But that's OK, right?
- 28:41SPEAKER_00: Because the sport doesn't have enough figures right now to keep the sport up.
- 28:47SPEAKER_00: We need more big fights.
- 28:48SPEAKER_00: We need people talking about it.
- 28:50SPEAKER_00: And these two can get people talking.
- 28:52SPEAKER_00: Obviously, there's an interest.
- 28:54SPEAKER_00: I think the problem is When fights like this are our marquee bouts instead of Boots
- 28:59SPEAKER_00: and it's Virgil Ortiz or whatever,
- 29:02SPEAKER_00: Abdullah Mason versus William Zepeda,
- 29:06SPEAKER_00: there's a chance you're going to get people to tune in and they're going to say,
- 29:09SPEAKER_00: man, boxing sucks now because it's two old fighters who are past their prime.
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: More than likely,
- 29:14SPEAKER_00: I think Fury knocks out Joshua,
- 29:16SPEAKER_00: but Fury's inconsistent enough where there is some excitement.
- 29:21SPEAKER_00: There's no reason he should have ever gotten dropped by Francis Ngannou.
- 29:24SPEAKER_00: That was pathetic.
- 29:25SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:26SPEAKER_00: It's a goofy performance.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: Right.
- 29:28SPEAKER_00: So that's the intrigue for that fight.
- 29:30SPEAKER_00: But I wanted to bring that up because the ticket sales are there and know nothing
- 29:34SPEAKER_00: about that fight excites me.
- 29:36SPEAKER_00: And I do kind of like the idea that it's on Netflix because it's exposing to a bigger audience.
- 29:42SPEAKER_00: I also have to kind of question why.
- 29:46SPEAKER_00: Why don't these younger guys get the spots on these big cards?
- 29:52SPEAKER_00: Why can't we get just a little bit more exposure to them?
- 29:55SPEAKER_00: So that is my paywall podcast.
- 29:58SPEAKER_00: I went on a heater today.
- 30:01SPEAKER_00: In conclusion, I think that Schofield and Bodhi...
- 30:05SPEAKER_00: It's going to be a really interesting fight.
- 30:07SPEAKER_00: It could be a very boring fight,
- 30:08SPEAKER_00: but I think it's going to show a lot about both fighters potential.
- 30:14SPEAKER_00: I think Schofield has probably more potential,
- 30:17SPEAKER_00: but body is extremely dangerous because,
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: you know,
- 30:19SPEAKER_00: the most dangerous person is the person that knows who they are and body knows
- 30:23SPEAKER_00: who he is going into this fight.
- 30:24SPEAKER_00: And I think for Schofield.
- 30:27SPEAKER_00: A lot is being asked of him, just in a lot of different ways.
- 30:31SPEAKER_00: And he has to be very mature at a very young age.
- 30:33SPEAKER_00: So if Schofield is able to win in a manner that's really impressive,
- 30:38SPEAKER_00: whether it's just through maturity or through a big knockout, he's a guy.
- 30:44SPEAKER_00: He's right up there with Ryan Garcia and Virgil Ortiz for Golden Boy Promotions.
- 30:48SPEAKER_00: Hey, thank you guys for sticking with me.
- 30:50SPEAKER_00: Paywall podcast.
- 30:51SPEAKER_00: I'm going to do this again in about 10 minutes for the good fight,
- 30:55SPEAKER_00: but really brightens my day that I can do this and give you guys a show.
- 30:59SPEAKER_00: So thank you.
