Latest / Twin Cities Territory / Joe Ryan throws another gem, and Twins cap a winning homestand
Transcript
- 0:01Speaker 1: Joe, Ryan is on a heater. The Twins finish off
- 0:04Speaker 1: as series win over the Astros and a winning homestand
- 0:06Speaker 1: with a win on Wednesday, and they head off now
- 0:09Speaker 1: on a ten game road trip for the rest of
- 0:12Speaker 1: the month of May. This is Twins Cities Territory You're
- 0:15Speaker 1: Minnesota Twins podcast here on the Foul Territory Network. I
- 0:19Speaker 1: am Zach Pearce of the Athletic, not a Yale guy.
- 0:22Speaker 1: Just wanted to make that clear today after Dan called
- 0:25Speaker 1: me one yesterday, so we set the record straight. Dan
- 0:27Speaker 1: Hayes of the Athletic as well, he's our Minnesota Twins
- 0:30Speaker 1: beat writer and Tyler Duffy, longtime Major leaguer and former
- 0:34Speaker 1: Minnesota Twin. It is Thursday, May twenty, first off day
- 0:38Speaker 1: for the Twins. They're coming off a win over the
- 0:40Speaker 1: Astros that finished off a five and four home stand
- 0:45Speaker 1: got them to twenty three and twenty seven, still in
- 0:48Speaker 1: third place in the Al Central. And guys, given all
- 0:51Speaker 1: that happened on in this stretch with Matt Walner being
- 0:54Speaker 1: sent down, Royce Lewis being sent down, Ryan Jeffers lost,
- 0:58Speaker 1: of course to the old Hamate and uh Twins, the
- 1:02Speaker 1: Twins will probably take a five and four home stand overall, Dan,
- 1:05Speaker 1: I would imagine, Yeah.
- 1:07Speaker 2: I think so, just saying sign of playing some good baseball,
- 1:11Speaker 2: turn trying to figure things out. And you know, the
- 1:13Speaker 2: two of those losses to the Brewers were one run games,
- 1:17Speaker 2: very winnable, so they're they're showing some signs of improvement.
- 1:21Speaker 3: You know. The thing is that the pitching just keeps
- 1:23Speaker 3: being very consistent.
- 1:24Speaker 2: Starting pitching in particular has been very good most of
- 1:28Speaker 2: this season, despite injuries to myriad guys now Pablo Lopez, mckabele,
- 1:34Speaker 2: Taj Bradley, they just keep turning guys out. Debbie Matthews
- 1:37Speaker 2: has looked really good, and Connor Prelib, Joe ryan Man,
- 1:41Speaker 2: he's been very good lately. And and so anytime you
- 1:45Speaker 2: have that good pitching, you're going a shot. And so
- 1:48Speaker 2: converting these wins has been good because it has been
- 1:53Speaker 2: there's been a lot of turmoil in that clubhouse just.
- 1:56Speaker 3: Through poor, you know, underperformance and.
- 2:00Speaker 2: A lot of a lot of obstacles to deal with,
- 2:03Speaker 2: and the you know, you get a team in like
- 2:06Speaker 2: the Astros who's even more beat up than you, you
- 2:08Speaker 2: want to win that series, and they were able to
- 2:11Speaker 2: convert it. With a very nice victory, and a victory
- 2:16Speaker 2: that showed, you know, a couple of younger guys who
- 2:19Speaker 2: are maybe showing some signs of development, which is what
- 2:24Speaker 2: you're definitely looking for if you're the Twins front office
- 2:26Speaker 2: right now, and what Twins fans.
- 2:28Speaker 3: Should be looking for.
- 2:29Speaker 2: Just any kind of positives like that can help this
- 2:33Speaker 2: team in the long run, and we saw a few
- 2:35Speaker 2: of those, for sure, Tyler.
- 2:37Speaker 1: There's a lot of lineup changes obviously, with all the
- 2:41Speaker 1: shifts and the roster, and it's got to be a
- 2:44Speaker 1: boost for a team to see guys like Ryan Kreiler
- 2:46Speaker 1: and Victor Karattini step in to those voids and filled
- 2:50Speaker 1: them pretty well and the win both of those guys
- 2:51Speaker 1: homeward in the four to one win yesterday over Houston.
- 2:55Speaker 4: Yeah, it's one we kind of talked about it earlier
- 2:57Speaker 4: in the year, you know, when they were winning, you know,
- 3:01Speaker 4: streaks of if you will, you know, it's contributions across
- 3:05Speaker 4: the board from you know, a different guy. It's seemingly
- 3:08Speaker 4: every night, and you know, it's really good to see
- 3:10Speaker 4: the two guys he got plugged in with between injuries
- 3:13Speaker 4: and options and things, both you know, Karatine hitting the
- 3:16Speaker 4: big homer. Kryler hitting a homer. You know, that's the
- 3:19Speaker 4: stuff that's going to have to happen this year because
- 3:21Speaker 4: you know, Byron's got the target on his back every
- 3:24Speaker 4: pitcher's meeting. It starts with him, and then it's the
- 3:27Speaker 4: guys around him. And so if he the more protection
- 3:29Speaker 4: he has, the more chances he has to get more
- 3:32Speaker 4: pitches to hit. You know, it turns into ops and
- 3:34Speaker 4: all the things that we want from our guys, and
- 3:37Speaker 4: it's you know, it's good to see, especially you squeeze
- 3:40Speaker 4: one out. I think the final was four to one,
- 3:43Speaker 4: you know, close game. That wasn't a slugfest. It was
- 3:45Speaker 4: just pop them for a couple of runs, good pitching
- 3:48Speaker 4: across the board, and go home and get on a
- 3:50Speaker 4: happy flight. You know, that's all you can ask for.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And have you seen once you think of the pitch
- 3:55Speaker 3: clock violation leading to the walk leading to the through
- 3:57Speaker 3: run homer.
- 3:58Speaker 5: That's a tough one. That's a huge momentum shift right there.
- 4:02Speaker 4: It's well, it's so tough, like it's you know, in
- 4:06Speaker 4: the moment you're so focused, like I get the pitchclock.
- 4:09Speaker 5: It's making the games are fast.
- 4:11Speaker 4: Now they're two and a half hours, three hours most
- 4:13Speaker 4: of the which is what they wanted. They wanted a
- 4:16Speaker 4: routine for fans. However, you're in the seventh, eighth or
- 4:21Speaker 4: ninth inning and you got to think for a half
- 4:23Speaker 4: second extra before you throw a baseball, like, we don't
- 4:27Speaker 4: we don't want that walk to happen like that.
- 4:29Speaker 3: You know.
- 4:29Speaker 4: It's just such it doesn't even feel competitive to me,
- 4:32Speaker 4: you know, and I'm sure guys in the moment they're
- 4:34Speaker 4: like happy to get a walk, but there's set little
- 4:36Speaker 4: bit of.
- 4:37Speaker 5: Just like you like when you get for that reason,
- 4:42Speaker 5: you know. But hey, a win's a win's a win.
- 4:44Speaker 5: So you know, we're not going to apologize for that one.
- 4:48Speaker 2: Yeah, two pitches later to give up the home run,
- 4:51Speaker 2: just like it's and it's crazy. There was one pitch
- 4:58Speaker 2: that to Carotene during his walk that could have been
- 5:01Speaker 2: challenged too.
- 5:02Speaker 3: It was a fastball at the bottom of the zone.
- 5:05Speaker 2: So like, there was all kinds of happenstance that occurred
- 5:08Speaker 2: before Wodler ran into that three.
- 5:12Speaker 3: Run homer and changed the game.
- 5:14Speaker 2: It was kind of it was a wild little sequence
- 5:17Speaker 2: of events between two teams that nobody really cares about
- 5:20Speaker 2: right now. So we're gonna We're gonna document it because
- 5:23Speaker 2: it was pure baseball right there.
- 5:25Speaker 5: That's right.
- 5:27Speaker 1: I had to take a walk in softball last week.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I imagine it's a similar feeling the pitchclock violation. It's
- 5:32Speaker 1: like I really didn't want to. I didn't want to
- 5:34Speaker 1: do it, but the pitch was just that bad and
- 5:38Speaker 1: I was going to hit it. You know, it was
- 5:39Speaker 1: going to beat it into the ground if I swung
- 5:40Speaker 1: on it. So I took my base and didn't apologize
- 5:44Speaker 1: for it. But anyway, the highlight probably of Wednesday, besides
- 5:50Speaker 1: the pitchclock violation walk, whatever they gave to Joe Ryan
- 5:56Speaker 1: after his elbow was sore, give it to everybody else
- 6:00Speaker 1: the team because Joe Ryan, since he has returned from
- 6:02Speaker 1: that brief little hiatus. Three straight I'll say it, Tyler Duffy,
- 6:08Speaker 1: three straight quality starts, go off, King do it.
- 6:15Speaker 5: It's just we've.
- 6:16Speaker 4: Heard a lot about the five inning less than two
- 6:20Speaker 4: is should run things, and I was referring to them
- 6:24Speaker 4: as almost quality starts. You know, for everyone at home,
- 6:28Speaker 4: it's six innings three runs are less as a quality start.
- 6:31Speaker 4: If you don't know what that is, it used to
- 6:33Speaker 4: be like the bread and butter stat for a starting pitcher,
- 6:37Speaker 4: you know, if you weren't doing that next guy up
- 6:40Speaker 4: kind of thing, you know, And with the way everything's now,
- 6:43Speaker 4: so everybody goes five. So I'm sure they'll change it
- 6:46Speaker 4: to a new stat at some point down the road,
- 6:48Speaker 4: but for now it's we'll call them some aqs's, but
- 6:51Speaker 4: some solid actual qs is.
- 6:53Speaker 1: For Joe Ryan lately, Yeah, eighteen innings pitched, one run
- 6:58Speaker 1: allowed in each of those three starts, twenty one strikeouts against,
- 7:01Speaker 1: four walks A one to five oh e r A
- 7:03Speaker 1: in those three starts, Dan, he's us been on fire.
- 7:07Speaker 2: Yeah, And yesterday in particularly, the swing and miss was
- 7:11Speaker 2: just amazing, like his sweeper was dancing. He had ninety
- 7:15Speaker 2: nine pitches thrown. He threw seventy one strikes, so he
- 7:18Speaker 2: was just he was in the zone. But then what
- 7:21Speaker 2: I love about Joe Ryan is he's accurate and his
- 7:25Speaker 2: command is good and he can be in the zone,
- 7:27Speaker 2: but also he knows when to make.
- 7:28Speaker 3: Good misses and get guys to chase.
- 7:31Speaker 2: And he had nineteen swings and misses and ninety nine
- 7:33Speaker 2: pitches yesterday, so he was.
- 7:35Speaker 3: Having another typically good day.
- 7:39Speaker 2: Before we got on air, stuff was talking about Atlanta
- 7:43Speaker 2: radio hosts talking about Byron Buxton being in the outfield there, Hey,
- 7:48Speaker 2: Atlanta host, the guy has a no trade clause and
- 7:51Speaker 2: he's a ten to five now so.
- 7:53Speaker 1: But he's from Georgia's dan, did you know that he's
- 7:55Speaker 1: from me?
- 7:55Speaker 3: Is?
- 7:56Speaker 5: He is hours away from Atlanta.
- 7:59Speaker 2: I would definitely put that in a place in one
- 8:03Speaker 2: of the like maybe two places that I bet you
- 8:05Speaker 2: he'd consider going if the call came. Because it doesn't
- 8:11Speaker 2: mean the team can't call and be like, hey, Jeremy Zol,
- 8:15Speaker 2: would you trade Byron Buxton? Like it's not like there's
- 8:18Speaker 2: like the Jeremy Zol's numbers disallowed from Atlanta's phone number
- 8:23Speaker 2: because of like, it's not like you punch into a computer.
- 8:26Speaker 2: We want to talk to Team A about Byron Buckston.
- 8:29Speaker 2: Then it's like this call will not be placed. You
- 8:31Speaker 2: can still call, you just get told no. And and
- 8:35Speaker 2: last year teams called about called his agent to try
- 8:39Speaker 2: and figure out if they could get around his.
- 8:41Speaker 3: No trade time. Anyway, Sorry that tangent there, Joe Ryan.
- 8:46Speaker 2: Certainly, Joe Ryan keeps doing this, We're going to hear
- 8:50Speaker 2: more and more about him, and then it's Twins fans
- 8:53Speaker 2: cover your ears. But I mean, he's gonna be a
- 8:55Speaker 2: lot at the trade deadline. And he's been so good,
- 9:01Speaker 2: you know, on the year, it's a three ZHO two era.
- 9:04Speaker 2: I think it's sixty one strikeouts in like fifty six
- 9:06Speaker 2: plus innings for a guy who is a first time
- 9:09Speaker 2: dad right now, who has clearly knows there's additional eyes
- 9:14Speaker 2: on him because every team that needs pitching is looking
- 9:18Speaker 2: at Joe Ryan. He's handling this all exceptionally well, and
- 9:21Speaker 2: especially when you throw in that elbow scare. I mean,
- 9:24Speaker 2: he said he didn't feel very good. He's felt off,
- 9:28Speaker 2: you know, just in delivery. However, like you know, Joe
- 9:32Speaker 2: Ryan's all about the flow, right and he is.
- 9:35Speaker 3: He is not. He was not feeling the flow in.
- 9:37Speaker 2: Those first five six starts, seven starts, and he was
- 9:41Speaker 2: still sitting there with like a three six e RA
- 9:43Speaker 2: at the time or three seventy RA. It's like, man,
- 9:46Speaker 2: what happens if you do feel that? And now we're
- 9:48Speaker 2: seeing what he looks like. He's on a roll, and
- 9:52Speaker 2: it's it's great for him for future earnings, it's great
- 9:57Speaker 2: for if the Twins had to trade him, it's great
- 10:00Speaker 2: for the Twins current chances because he's helping keep them around.
- 10:04Speaker 2: Who knows, maybe maybe Tom Pohlad says, let's buy at
- 10:09Speaker 2: the deadline if they're like twenty two, you know, if
- 10:10Speaker 2: they're four games under five hundred. But somehow everybody up, Yeah,
- 10:17Speaker 2: I don't know.
- 10:19Speaker 5: I'll believe it.
- 10:19Speaker 2: When I see it. However, you know, you never know.
- 10:23Speaker 2: If they're hanging around like this, maybe they'll be active buyers. Like,
- 10:28Speaker 2: I don't don't believe that, but you know, anyways, it's
- 10:33Speaker 2: Joe Ryan being good no matter what, Joe Ryan being
- 10:37Speaker 2: pitchank level he's at right now is very good for
- 10:40Speaker 2: all parties interested, whether it's outside the Twins and looking
- 10:44Speaker 2: to add him, whether it's the Twins thinking let's keep
- 10:47Speaker 2: going with him, or whether it's Joe Ryan's agent thinking
- 10:52Speaker 2: about free agency. This is a it's a nice turn
- 10:55Speaker 2: of events. And man, again, he was nasty yesterday. It
- 10:57Speaker 2: was just it was unfair. And the Astros have like
- 11:00Speaker 2: two or three good hitters going in their lineup right
- 11:02Speaker 2: now with Al Tuvay and Korea out. That was he
- 11:07Speaker 2: was just kind of it was like, you know, it
- 11:10Speaker 2: was very easy. It looked very easy for him, and
- 11:14Speaker 2: it has a lot lately.
- 11:17Speaker 1: We'll talk more about going ahead of the trade deadline,
- 11:21Speaker 1: the Big ten game road trip coming up, and more.
- 11:24Speaker 1: If you are watching on YouTube, we're tossing a QR
- 11:27Speaker 1: code up on the screen right now. We are on
- 11:29Speaker 1: our way to five hundred subscriber, or at least we're
- 11:32Speaker 1: hoping to get there. We're about to pass three hundred.
- 11:34Speaker 1: I think we're very close to three hundred, so moving
- 11:37Speaker 1: on up. If you would like to subscribe to the show,
- 11:40Speaker 1: you can do so right there using that QR code.
- 11:43Speaker 1: We'd love to have you appreciate any feedback, likes, subscribe, comments, anything,

- 12:55Speaker 1: I had to take that sweatshirt off. It's way too
- 12:57Speaker 1: hot in here. But I made my point. Princeton not Yale.
- 13:03Speaker 2: No wait, let's be honest when it comes to me,
- 13:07Speaker 2: like you know, it's your school is very good, but
- 13:10Speaker 2: you're all relevant to me when it comes to March
- 13:12Speaker 2: in the Mountain or the matt NCAA tournament.
- 13:16Speaker 1: So well, that's right, we're Yeah. Dan is a San
- 13:20Speaker 1: Diego State guy, right.
- 13:23Speaker 3: Big basketball, Yeah, basketball fan, that's like the one thing.
- 13:26Speaker 1: And we shared a Sweet sixteen venue a couple of
- 13:29Speaker 1: years back.
- 13:30Speaker 3: We did we did THEA on that road trip. Coming up.
- 13:34Speaker 3: The manager, I believe you called some of his games.
- 13:37Speaker 1: Uh, Willna Yeah, yeah, I did some play by play
- 13:41Speaker 1: for Princeton baseball back in the day, some pa announcing.
- 13:44Speaker 3: I thought you did Princeton basketball.
- 13:46Speaker 1: I did that too football as well.
- 13:50Speaker 3: Will Vennible and Chris Young all time Princeton.
- 13:55Speaker 1: Yeah he was. He was gone before I got there,
- 13:59Speaker 1: of course he was.
- 13:59Speaker 3: Yeah, I know you went a long time ago, but
- 14:04Speaker 3: it did.
- 14:04Speaker 2: Yes, yes, but well Cannibal, I know was was there
- 14:09Speaker 2: at the same time as you.
- 14:10Speaker 1: Yeah, think you think you're older than me though, Dan, So.
- 14:13Speaker 5: No, you know not at hard.
- 14:17Speaker 1: Moving on, there's a there's a couple more things we
- 14:21Speaker 1: wanted to talk about from that Astro series. I do
- 14:24Speaker 1: want to get back to kind of looking ahead to
- 14:26Speaker 1: to trade deadline and this upcoming road trip. But but first,
- 14:30Speaker 1: another interesting development from Wednesday, Dan was Andrew Morris, who
- 14:34Speaker 1: has mostly been kind of in that long relief role
- 14:39Speaker 1: so far in his debut season, got a shot at
- 14:42Speaker 1: closer and did not did not miss.
- 14:46Speaker 3: No, he didn't.
- 14:47Speaker 2: Ten pitches right through the heart of the order, got
- 14:50Speaker 2: Yortn Alvarez. Quite quiet series from yord On Alvarez. That's
- 14:54Speaker 2: a rare thing against the Twins. It's a rare thing
- 14:56Speaker 2: against anybody, but got through the heart of the order
- 15:00Speaker 2: and Andrew Morris like afterwards, we asked Derek Shelton about him.
- 15:04Speaker 2: He said, he's got a low heartbeat and that's a
- 15:07Speaker 2: beautiful thing. And we've seen Andrew Morris get more and
- 15:11Speaker 2: more of these high leverage roles early on his first
- 15:15Speaker 2: six games, every one of them was one plus inning,
- 15:18Speaker 2: so he got out there on went to thedegout and
- 15:21Speaker 2: came back for a second inning. But you know, four
- 15:24Speaker 2: of them were at least two and two thirds, so
- 15:27Speaker 2: he was pitching a long man role. And he's worked
- 15:29Speaker 2: his way. He's shown some signs. They had to get
- 15:32Speaker 2: him over the hump and get him pitching on back
- 15:34Speaker 2: to back days. And then you know, this was three
- 15:36Speaker 2: and four in this one, and Shelton said he was
- 15:39Speaker 2: looking for a sign with the Velo because three and
- 15:41Speaker 2: four is really a step up and workload. And the
- 15:44Speaker 2: first pitch was ninety five and he knew that Andrew
- 15:47Speaker 2: Morris was good. And Andrew Morris average ninety six to
- 15:50Speaker 2: six with his fastball. I don't look, do I think
- 15:55Speaker 2: he's a closer. I don't know right now. He's like
- 15:57Speaker 2: a guy that could close for them, But I do
- 16:00Speaker 2: think he's got high leverage potential for sure. Like these
- 16:05Speaker 2: are good signs we've seen from him. He comes in
- 16:08Speaker 2: even in the game against the Brewers where he gave
- 16:10Speaker 2: up to two runs had they not had the obstruction call,
- 16:13Speaker 2: he gets, makes a pitch, gets a grounder, and they
- 16:16Speaker 2: get that lead runner that might have changed the entire inning. Instead,
- 16:21Speaker 2: he gives up two runs that inning. But I just
- 16:24Speaker 2: like what I've seen. I like the how he handles it.
- 16:28Speaker 2: Some guys fight the role switch from starting pitcher to reliever,
- 16:33Speaker 2: and he said he wants to do something meaningful, and
- 16:36Speaker 2: if that means go to the bullpen and handle it
- 16:39Speaker 2: and do something to help with the team, he's doing
- 16:41Speaker 2: it like so I like the way he's approaching it.
- 16:45Speaker 2: I talked to Anthony Bonda yesterday about it, just how
- 16:48Speaker 2: what his impressions have been, and he said he can
- 16:51Speaker 2: already see Andrew Morris trying to figure out during the
- 16:54Speaker 2: game what his lane might be when there might be
- 16:58Speaker 2: a run of right handers coming up he's gonna face,
- 17:01Speaker 2: and to see him start moving around and getting ready
- 17:03Speaker 2: for that potential spot that Morris is picking that stuff
- 17:08Speaker 2: up and we're talking about two months in, so like,
- 17:11Speaker 2: clearly he's got the mental side for this. I feel like,
- 17:15Speaker 2: you know, you come back from that game against the
- 17:17Speaker 2: Brewers where he took the loss, and to come back
- 17:20Speaker 2: and have pitched well now twice since then is a
- 17:25Speaker 2: good sign.
- 17:26Speaker 3: And beyond that, he's got the mustache, which you know.
- 17:29Speaker 2: I think the mustache gives him some closer type vibes
- 17:33Speaker 2: for right now.
- 17:34Speaker 3: I mean, he looks like a little kid out there still.
- 17:36Speaker 1: I mean, you got to deliver that. If you have
- 17:38Speaker 1: a mustache, you gotta deliver. That's the rule.
- 17:40Speaker 5: Yeah, you're setting yourself up.
- 17:41Speaker 1: Yeah, Tyler, what goes through your head the first time
- 17:46Speaker 1: you get a shot in a high leverage situation.
- 17:49Speaker 4: It's I mean, that's my Like I started up until
- 17:52Speaker 4: twenty seventeen, and then they're like, hey, you made the team,
- 17:55Speaker 4: You're going to the bullpen. I'm like, sure you, And
- 17:58Speaker 4: then I started that You're kind of the same. I
- 18:01Speaker 4: wonder how closely timed it is, but like I started
- 18:04Speaker 4: the year as the long guy. You know, I think,
- 18:06Speaker 4: go with three innings in Detroit, like first series of
- 18:08Speaker 4: the year, whatever, and then is you know, everybody got
- 18:12Speaker 4: their shots and the next thing. You know, I got
- 18:14Speaker 4: a shot in the sixth, and then it was you know,
- 18:16Speaker 4: a little more leverage early, and then it was the seventh.
- 18:19Speaker 4: Then you can you feel it coming, and to dance
- 18:23Speaker 4: point talking to Banda like, when you can feel it
- 18:27Speaker 4: coming and then it starts happening, you start to get
- 18:29Speaker 4: a little bit of that confidence. And that's what seemingly
- 18:31Speaker 4: happening right now with Morris is you know, he knows
- 18:35Speaker 4: his spot's coming. He's starting to figure out, all right,
- 18:38Speaker 4: it's the guys or it's the big riety with whoever's
- 18:41Speaker 4: around him, you know, get ready for your lane, and
- 18:44Speaker 4: that builds confidence. And that's you know, when we've talked
- 18:47Speaker 4: about roles and having an idea, that's what it really
- 18:51Speaker 4: starts to become is just knowing you can look at
- 18:53Speaker 4: a lineup and pick out your spot, you know. And
- 18:57Speaker 4: at this point now it's if it's going to be
- 18:59Speaker 4: the ninth, makes it even easier. You know, it might
- 19:02Speaker 4: be the eighth, but it's going to be the heart
- 19:04Speaker 4: of the order or who's ever's up in the ninth
- 19:06Speaker 4: with the lead and that, and that becomes easy to
- 19:08Speaker 4: get ready for it, to get up for you know,
- 19:10Speaker 4: you're not as Trevor May and I remember talking, it's
- 19:13Speaker 4: just this all day slow trickle to get ready to
- 19:16Speaker 4: pitch at some point, and it's it's hard to do
- 19:20Speaker 4: that for one sixty two.
- 19:21Speaker 5: But you know, when you know you.
- 19:22Speaker 4: Got a roughly eight ninth inning leverage spot, it's easy
- 19:27Speaker 4: to get up for it.
- 19:29Speaker 2: He became the the ninth Twin to earn at save
- 19:33Speaker 2: this season, which is just shocking to me.
- 19:37Speaker 3: The eighth we we got too briefly the other day,
- 19:40Speaker 3: but it was Taylor Rodgers in that Monday game.
- 19:43Speaker 2: Cool stat that the Twins passed along and involves one
- 19:49Speaker 2: of us here, but Taylor Rodgers last save in of
- 19:53Speaker 2: Twins uniform before the other night on Monday.
- 19:57Speaker 3: I think it was against Houston.
- 19:59Speaker 2: Was I twenty third twenty twenty one versus the La Angels.
- 20:03Speaker 3: This is courtesy of Twins Radio. That was seventeen hundred
- 20:06Speaker 3: and sixty days in between says it's the most days
- 20:09Speaker 3: in between saves for a Twins player. Steve Luber was second,
- 20:14Speaker 3: was sixteen hundred ninety six days between his two from
- 20:17Speaker 3: nineteen seventy one to nineteen seventy six. Jesse Crane third
- 20:22Speaker 3: with fourteen hundred and thirteen days. Tyler Duffy, fourth between
- 20:27Speaker 3: twins saves thirteen hundred and seventy one days in between, says,
- 20:33Speaker 3: I mean they did up with with.
- 20:35Speaker 1: The you got you got one in twenty seventeen and
- 20:37Speaker 1: then not another one until twenty twenty one.
- 20:39Speaker 4: That they didn't let me have it too often. I
- 20:43Speaker 4: mean we always had a closer that was much better
- 20:45Speaker 4: than I was.
- 20:46Speaker 5: But what was it?
- 20:47Speaker 4: Yeah, I think it was Longer Leaf in Chicago and
- 20:50Speaker 4: then the Rangers probably. I think it was to save
- 20:55Speaker 4: I had to come in. I think I can't remember
- 20:56Speaker 4: what happened. I think I got to save it at
- 20:59Speaker 4: the new Rangers Park.
- 21:01Speaker 3: That's pretty incredible that the recall.
- 21:05Speaker 5: Grown man save for the first one.
- 21:07Speaker 4: I remember Joe giving me the ball and I was
- 21:09Speaker 4: just like it's like fifteen to one and we just
- 21:12Speaker 4: like blew them mouth kind of thing, and it's like yeah, cool,
- 21:15Speaker 4: Like this is okay, wait, so.
- 21:16Speaker 2: This actually you were close. The Rangers save was the
- 21:24Speaker 2: Rangers saved was a month later. Your first one was
- 21:27Speaker 2: actually at Cleveland in ten innings.
- 21:30Speaker 5: There were you guys.
- 21:32Speaker 2: You guys scored three as May twenty third, twenty twenty one,
- 21:36Speaker 2: and who hit the three run homer was that Kyle
- 21:39Speaker 2: Garlic Kyle Carlic hit a home run off James Left.
- 21:44Speaker 3: I was right, No, it wasn't. It wasn't. It was
- 21:47Speaker 3: a right writing homer.
- 21:49Speaker 2: Oh Man, Karen Chack, I still remember the game where
- 21:52Speaker 2: rock o'haden the umpire's check his hair.
- 21:55Speaker 3: For for we but yeah, so yeah, I thought that
- 22:01Speaker 3: was a good start. He told me that the other day.
- 22:03Speaker 1: Good for this can be a good news segment. Just
- 22:06Speaker 1: we pick an old Tyler Duffy game that Dan also
- 22:10Speaker 1: covered and just reminisce about it would be a good one.
- 22:14Speaker 5: In between which ones not to pitch?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Yeah, that's good point. Yeah, we'll vet them first. In
- 22:23Speaker 1: between Joe Ryan and Andrew Morris. Dan another picture with
- 22:27Speaker 1: a fine relief outing that you wanted to touch on.
- 22:29Speaker 1: Yonder scomes with two innings, pitch, five k's and no runs.
- 22:35Speaker 2: Duff give your impression first, what did you see from
- 22:37Speaker 2: Yonder Scomez? It was like a forty eight thirty six
- 22:40Speaker 2: pitch outing or something like that.
- 22:41Speaker 4: And yeah, he looks great. You know, we got him
- 22:44Speaker 4: from Tampa. I guess he had been dfaide, which you
- 22:47Speaker 4: know sometimes that's because they have too many guys you
- 22:50Speaker 4: never know why you guys get the a faide always
- 22:52Speaker 4: it's you know, sometimes just a roster crunch or whatever.
- 22:54Speaker 4: But he seems to be thriving in Minnesota at this point.
- 22:59Speaker 4: I mean, put him in some spots. He's getting the
- 23:01Speaker 4: job done. I think you got to save like his
- 23:03Speaker 4: first outing, right, Yeah, you know, he's just he's pitched everywhere,
- 23:07Speaker 4: He's gonna do everything, and at that point you get
- 23:09Speaker 4: deafade like he's happy to be in the big leagues.
- 23:11Speaker 5: I'm sure he's doing stuff behind the scenes.
- 23:14Speaker 4: That is, he's trying to get better and better and
- 23:16Speaker 4: keep working because you get new life like this, it's
- 23:20Speaker 4: it's it's a golden opportunity to go and utilize everything
- 23:24Speaker 4: that they have in that clubhouse. And pitching wise, it's
- 23:27Speaker 4: you know, it's good to see guys were grabbing that
- 23:29Speaker 4: are doing well.
- 23:31Speaker 2: Yeah, this is a guy that he's walked four point
- 23:35Speaker 2: three per nine for his career and mostly has been
- 23:39Speaker 2: a starter. He's only twenty six still too, so this
- 23:42Speaker 2: is like a find a guy with less than your
- 23:44Speaker 2: service time. It's if it works out, he is a find. Obviously,
- 23:50Speaker 2: long way to go to see that.
- 23:52Speaker 3: But one thing he.
- 23:54Speaker 2: Pitched for the White Sox down the stretch in twenty
- 23:57Speaker 2: twenty five, after pitching a little bit of relief for
- 24:00Speaker 2: the Yankees and the Dodgers earlier in the season. But
- 24:03Speaker 2: he the White Sox thought he nibbled too much. Clearly
- 24:07Speaker 2: the Walks illustrate that. So they asked him to throw
- 24:11Speaker 2: four pitches. And for most of his career he has
- 24:13Speaker 2: thrown a two seamer, a cutter, a change up, a sweeper,
- 24:18Speaker 2: and a fastball. Like even this year he's thrown four
- 24:22Speaker 2: of those pitches seventeen and a half percent or more.
- 24:26Speaker 2: But the Twins are saying, look, you're a reliever. Now,
- 24:28Speaker 2: let's your fastball's got some special characteristics to it. Beyond
- 24:32Speaker 2: that it's averaging ninety five. We don't have a lot
- 24:35Speaker 2: of that, and so why don't we just make you
- 24:37Speaker 2: a sweeper fastball guy right now? And those two pitches
- 24:41Speaker 2: now account for eighty five percent of all his pitches.
- 24:44Speaker 2: He's thrown fifty six percent fastballs for his career, he's
- 24:47Speaker 2: like a thirty four percent or the last two years
- 24:50Speaker 2: his thirty four percent fastball. So clearly they see something
- 24:53Speaker 2: and they're mixing it up. Led to five strikeouts and
- 24:56Speaker 2: two innings, but we did see it in the last
- 25:00Speaker 2: time out, he walked two batters, and so he needs.
- 25:03Speaker 3: To attack with this fastball.
- 25:04Speaker 2: That's clearly the key, and he needs to be sharp
- 25:07Speaker 2: with it. We saw second inning. You know, it comes
- 25:10Speaker 2: out and strikes out the side. In the first inning,
- 25:12Speaker 2: body comes back and falls behind cam Smith three to
- 25:15Speaker 2: one and gives up a single, and Victor Carrettini went
- 25:18Speaker 2: out for a mound meeting immediately and was like, hey,
- 25:22Speaker 2: let's let's relax here. Whatever he said, he didn't, you know,
- 25:25Speaker 2: but it calmed him down. He came back, he threw
- 25:28Speaker 2: two balls for missed with two fast balls, but fought
- 25:31Speaker 2: back and got the out and then retired the next
- 25:34Speaker 2: two and got, you know, two clean, really really clean innings,
- 25:38Speaker 2: encouraging innings. He's got six strikeouts in five and a
- 25:41Speaker 2: third so far with the Twins. We'll see what it
- 25:44Speaker 2: can be. But he's gonna get chances.
- 25:46Speaker 3: Too, because they clearly like the mix and he's given
- 25:48Speaker 3: him some results.
- 25:49Speaker 2: So you got to hope, Like when you're in the
- 25:53Speaker 2: twins position, with all these open spots in the bullpen,
- 25:56Speaker 2: that guys pan out and you're clearly turning over every
- 26:00Speaker 2: looking for talent, and you know, they got him for
- 26:03Speaker 2: cash on May sixth, and we've see him pitching a
- 26:06Speaker 2: lot of late innings and I mean, he's gonna get
- 26:08Speaker 2: to keep doing that for right now, and maybe it
- 26:11Speaker 2: turns into something.
- 26:14Speaker 1: A six point two to three e er for Gomez
- 26:16Speaker 1: and seventeen and a third innings with Tampa and then
- 26:21Speaker 1: five and a third innings across seven outings for the
- 26:23Speaker 1: Twins so far, a goose egg. Not a single run
- 26:27Speaker 1: aloud so early yet, as you pointed out, Dan, but
- 26:30Speaker 1: encouraging start for sure. The Twins now head out on
- 26:34Speaker 1: a ten game road trip. They're not back at Target
- 26:37Speaker 1: Field until June first, don't have another off day after
- 26:41Speaker 1: today until June eighth, so a couple of weeks straight
- 26:44Speaker 1: of games. They're first in Boston, then off to the
- 26:48Speaker 1: play the White Sox, and then ending in Pittsburgh the
- 26:50Speaker 1: Derek Shelton Revenge Series. The Twins will pass the one
- 26:57Speaker 1: third mark of the season on this road trip. It's
- 27:00Speaker 1: still early. It's not as early as it was the
- 27:02Speaker 1: first two weeks of this podcast, where we mentioned that
- 27:05Speaker 1: it was early every single day, But right the American
- 27:11Speaker 1: League overall is still pretty average. The Rays and Yankees
- 27:16Speaker 1: have separated a bit. The Guardians might be on their
- 27:18Speaker 1: way to doing that too, but everyone else is on
- 27:21Speaker 1: one side of five hundred barely or the other or worse.
- 27:25Speaker 1: If the Twins can come back from this series with
- 27:28Speaker 1: a winning record, they will be right in that mix
- 27:32Speaker 1: for wild card positioning, obviously, and they're playing teams that
- 27:37Speaker 1: if you want to be in the playoffs, you should be.
- 27:39Speaker 1: Boston is just coming off a sweep over Kansas City
- 27:44Speaker 1: but still under five hundred. The White Socks are right
- 27:45Speaker 1: ahead of the Twins in the AL Central twenty five
- 27:48Speaker 1: and twenty four. The Pirates are in last place in
- 27:50Speaker 1: the NL Central but above five hundred in that very
- 27:54Speaker 1: tough vision right. They also have Paul Skins, so it's
- 27:58Speaker 1: not as with as always with the Twins. This could
- 28:02Speaker 1: go a lot of ways, but it feels like this
- 28:04Speaker 1: series Dan could, or this this stretch could potentially kind
- 28:08Speaker 1: of set the tone for what happens in the next
- 28:11Speaker 1: two months as we head towards the trade deadline. Did
- 28:12Speaker 1: they come out of this road trip in good position
- 28:16Speaker 1: or bad? It could if they fall too many games,
- 28:18Speaker 1: but five behind five hundred, I could see it digging
- 28:22Speaker 1: a hole that they can't get out of.
- 28:24Speaker 2: Yeah, that's definitely the case. You got to hope for
- 28:27Speaker 2: a five hundred trip here, you know, ten games, that's
- 28:30Speaker 2: a long trip, and they are going through all kinds
- 28:34Speaker 2: of issues on that offensive side, just with those guys,
- 28:37Speaker 2: with Walner and Lewis being out, you know, or at TRIPLEA.
- 28:41Speaker 3: But they've played pretty well lately.
- 28:44Speaker 2: They won three of their last four series, and even
- 28:47Speaker 2: in that Milwaukee series losing two or three.
- 28:50Speaker 3: They were in it the entire way.
- 28:52Speaker 2: They got to keep going that way, this direction, and
- 28:57Speaker 2: you know it's possible to get Todd Bradley back. There's
- 28:59Speaker 2: a tv A for the second game in Boston. He
- 29:03Speaker 2: threw a bullpen on Wednesday. His bullpen previously I believe
- 29:09Speaker 2: was on Monday. Was very encouraging, or they were.
- 29:12Speaker 3: They've been excited to see what he's done.
- 29:14Speaker 2: He had pitched in Saint Paul over the weekend too,
- 29:18Speaker 2: and so you know, sorry, actually Monday, he came in
- 29:23Speaker 2: from Saint Paul and felt good. That was the update then,
- 29:26Speaker 2: And he threw a bullpen Wednesday, and seems like he
- 29:30Speaker 2: could be returning to the rotation.
- 29:31Speaker 3: That'd be a nice boost to get to. But with
- 29:34Speaker 3: the pitching they're getting.
- 29:35Speaker 2: The starting pitching is they they have a chance to
- 29:38Speaker 2: keep going and being in every game. It's figuring out
- 29:42Speaker 2: those late innings and it's figuring out our way to
- 29:44Speaker 2: get enough runs. Crazily enough, the Twins I think are
- 29:47Speaker 2: third in the American League in offense, but they.
- 29:49Speaker 3: Just seem to be a little bit streaky.
- 29:51Speaker 2: We've seen them with their downturns withston scoring position. This
- 29:54Speaker 2: would be a good time take advantage of some pitching
- 29:56Speaker 2: because Boston's pitching is not good.
- 30:00Speaker 3: They've been they've been struggling. So I mean, yeah, you
- 30:04Speaker 3: you you can't keep going.
- 30:08Speaker 2: Three and seven on road trips of this magnitude, so
- 30:11Speaker 2: you you really got to play five hundred ball otherwise
- 30:14Speaker 2: your chances you're you're more likely ending up on life support,
- 30:17Speaker 2: and that's definitely where they'd like to avoid, at least
- 30:21Speaker 2: before June one.
- 30:23Speaker 5: Yeah, I think that four game set in Chicago is
- 30:26Speaker 5: going to be you know, it's the.
- 30:28Speaker 4: Heart of the road trip, but it's also first time
- 30:30Speaker 4: seeing them and they're right there with us, and so
- 30:34Speaker 4: it's like that's going to be a really good it's
- 30:37Speaker 4: gonna be the full roster worth your four games are
- 30:39Speaker 4: going to be everybody twice. You know, the hitters are
- 30:42Speaker 4: going to get a full look at everybody and vice versa.
- 30:45Speaker 4: It's it'll be a good one, especially our first encounter
- 30:48Speaker 4: with I'm blinking on his name at the moment, south
- 30:52Speaker 4: Side Samurai.
- 30:54Speaker 1: What is his name, Omer Kami?
- 30:56Speaker 4: Yeah, hearing the cover off the baseball, you know, it's
- 31:02Speaker 4: a it'll be a good that's the one. I'm excited
- 31:04Speaker 4: to see that series because you know, the White Sox
- 31:08Speaker 4: are making a little noise over there.
- 31:09Speaker 2: I think one sixty ops plus from amuracamy uh and yeah,
- 31:16Speaker 2: seventeen homers, which leads a league, nine thirty four ops,
- 31:20Speaker 2: five point fifty two slug.
- 31:23Speaker 3: He's been and and just bringing them life. Because the
- 31:26Speaker 3: White Sox twenty.
- 31:28Speaker 2: Five and twenty four, I don't know that I know
- 31:30Speaker 2: their fans are very excited. I don't know anybody saw
- 31:33Speaker 2: them being right here at this point and taking two
- 31:36Speaker 2: or three from the Cubs, and you know, taking down.
- 31:39Speaker 3: PC the Cubs looks pretty invincible.
- 31:45Speaker 2: And then then the Cubs just got swept by the Brewers.
- 31:49Speaker 2: So yeah, what a what a week it's been for
- 31:53Speaker 2: the Cubs and the White Sox are a prominent part
- 31:55Speaker 2: of that. So it is a good test without question.
- 32:00Speaker 2: Starts in Fenway Park this weekend. Connor pre Lip gets
- 32:03Speaker 2: to start on Friday, Bailey over Saturday, Kendrick Rojas scheduled
- 32:08Speaker 2: for the Sunday finale, and.
- 32:10Speaker 3: Then we Fridayhead. Wait, wait, Friday bobblehead Day. Guess whose
- 32:14Speaker 3: bubblehead it is at Fenway Park? David Ortiz, Roger Clemens?
- 32:22Speaker 5: Are you going, Dan?
- 32:24Speaker 2: No, I'm going to do the Pittsburgh and I have
- 32:28Speaker 2: to give my people to get me one. You're gonna
- 32:31Speaker 2: have to give my Kerman a call and say, give
- 32:32Speaker 2: me a Roger Clemens bobblehead.
- 32:35Speaker 5: I'll call Breslo see if you can grab me.
- 32:37Speaker 3: One to the top.
- 32:40Speaker 1: Oh yeah, I like it.
- 32:42Speaker 5: I'm sure he's got nothing going on.
- 32:45Speaker 1: Yeah, before we go, we have to get to something
- 32:52Speaker 1: very important. If it's a new it's a new segment.
- 32:56Speaker 1: I'm calling explain yourself, Dan. If you follow Dan on
- 33:02Speaker 1: Twitter or x, which I recommend for the Twins content,
- 33:07Speaker 1: but not for any of the rest of it. He's
- 33:11Speaker 1: got some good ones in there. I shouldn't say that,
- 33:12Speaker 1: but he had an interesting week checking out umpire pants.
- 33:19Speaker 1: Dan noticed some differences in the styles, which is unusual.
- 33:24Speaker 1: Usually they like to match, and it happened not just
- 33:29Speaker 1: against the Brewers, but then again against the Astros. Dan,
- 33:34Speaker 1: first of all, please please explain your fashion fascination with
- 33:37Speaker 1: this story, and can you tell us anything about what
- 33:39Speaker 1: happened here in this.
- 33:41Speaker 2: I can I can't, okay, all right, First someone else
- 33:46Speaker 2: noticed it and tweeted at me, and so in both
- 33:51Speaker 2: cases I got tipped off because it's not like you're
- 33:54Speaker 2: out there looking at uniforms right like everybody's writing.
- 33:58Speaker 5: Sure, but you still like notice nobody.
- 34:03Speaker 2: But but like, like somebody tweeted at me, and then
- 34:07Speaker 2: once you see it, you can't like unsee it.
- 34:10Speaker 3: It's impossible to unsee because these guys.
- 34:13Speaker 2: Usually are wearing gray pants and with their their black tops,
- 34:17Speaker 2: and it's very uniform, and here they are wearing jeans
- 34:21Speaker 2: and runners and all kinds of different pants out there.
- 34:26Speaker 2: It was wild and like I took the photo from
- 34:30Speaker 2: Afar and then zoomed in on it and put it
- 34:32Speaker 2: on social media, and we actually requested to talk to.
- 34:37Speaker 7: The Umpires and one of our pool reporters went down
- 34:39Speaker 7: there Friday night after the Brewers game to find out
- 34:41Speaker 7: what happened, because there was a lot of fascination online
- 34:44Speaker 7: with umpire pants because yeah, it's stupid, and we're baseball
- 34:47Speaker 7: fans and there's one hundred and sixty two of these
- 34:50Speaker 7: things and when something's different.
- 34:54Speaker 3: But they declined to interview with.
- 34:57Speaker 2: Bobby Nightingale, and I don't think they wanted to make
- 35:00Speaker 2: the company look bad that.
- 35:02Speaker 3: So what happens is umpires have trunks. They don't.
- 35:05Speaker 2: I was like, oh, you know, I'd bring my clothes
- 35:08Speaker 2: just in my own bag. But there's so much equipment
- 35:10Speaker 2: that they have, they ship it in the trunk, just
- 35:12Speaker 2: like teams ship all of their equipment with the team plane.
- 35:16Speaker 2: Umpires do the same thing. And in both cases, the
- 35:19Speaker 2: trunks arrived late. The first game, apparently it got there
- 35:25Speaker 2: ten minutes before the game, but the guys already had
- 35:27Speaker 2: to be on the field at that point, so nothing
- 35:29Speaker 2: you could do about it. So they would go in
- 35:31Speaker 2: in between innings and change. There is one solution, the
- 35:37Speaker 2: home plate umpire. There's always a pair of plate umpire
- 35:40Speaker 2: pants at each ballpark. There's an emergency Yeah, I know,
- 35:44Speaker 2: it's crazy. There's an emergency trunk at the ballpark and
- 35:48Speaker 2: the clubbe's they don't even have access to it unless
- 35:52Speaker 2: they reach out the league and.
- 35:54Speaker 5: Get the code company.
- 35:57Speaker 2: Yes, so like legitimately, and apparently, you know, because it's
- 36:01Speaker 2: umpire pants, they're baggy because you gotta get some extra
- 36:05Speaker 2: equipment and you're doing the lean down right, like they
- 36:07Speaker 2: want comfortable pants. So I think whoever was working the
- 36:11Speaker 2: plate Friday did already have their umpire pants and someone
- 36:15Speaker 2: else was offered the secondary pairt and they're like, they
- 36:18Speaker 2: said no because they look like I'm gonna date myself.
- 36:20Speaker 3: MC hammer pants and so they didn't want to change.
- 36:24Speaker 2: So we had that happen on Friday, and I was like, okay, cool,
- 36:28Speaker 2: And then Monday it happened again. And I've never seen
- 36:30Speaker 2: this before. I know it happened with Joe West way back.
- 36:33Speaker 2: Somebody sent me a photo of it. But yeah, it
- 36:37Speaker 2: happened again. And apparently about ten minutes before the two
- 36:41Speaker 2: hour rain delay ended on Monday, the trunk arrived and
- 36:44Speaker 2: so the guys were able to change back.
- 36:46Speaker 3: Into their Yes. Yes, so yeah, yes, I have a
- 36:54Speaker 3: pant umpire pants fetish, I guess we can say. And
- 36:58Speaker 3: so I'm gonna.
- 37:00Speaker 2: Keep diving into this and yeah, you know, I would
- 37:03Speaker 2: have thought they just carried them in there like suitcases
- 37:06Speaker 2: and brought a second suitcase and checked down the plane
- 37:09Speaker 2: and you know, maybe the bags got lost, but no.
- 37:12Speaker 3: Trunks this year.
- 37:14Speaker 4: Across the board, pants cake for doing it, irons pants
- 37:20Speaker 4: down up down rankles.
- 37:25Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that segment will help or hurt
