- 0:11Hello, friends, it's Sean. Here it is, Wednesday 28th of
- 0:17January, which means we say happy birthday, Lego.
- 0:20That's right, 68 years ago that amazing Danish patent was filed
- 0:26and Lego was born with those interlocking bricks.
- 0:29And did you realise that in the early 2000s, Lego was on the
- 0:33brink of bankruptcy. They were just expanding into
- 0:36theme parks and, and licencing of all sorts of different
- 0:40products, but kind of lost their focus on the brick.
- 0:44And everything was so complicated when they did
- 0:46release patents that they had over 12,000 different types of
- 0:50bricks. And then they said, right, let's
- 0:52cut it all back. They sold their theme parks.
- 0:55We began partnerships with things like Star Wars and Harry
- 0:58Potter and all of these popular franchises.
- 1:02And they trimmed their brick selection down to about 4000
- 1:06bricks and said if you're going to design something, it's going
- 1:08to be made out of these fewer selection of bricks.
- 1:12And they have, well, not quite taken over the world, but they
- 1:15are doing great after, well, the last 20 years, just gone from
- 1:18strength to strength. Amazing.
- 1:20They forgot what they were all about and they returned to it
- 1:23and absolutely nailed it. And that is what we are doing,
- 1:27friends, as we return to what we are all about in the middle of
- 1:31today, with all of the distractions and things that are
- 1:34going to be floating past your attention, we have returned back
- 1:38to the core part of who we are. That is, we are children of the
- 1:42living God who sent us his Son Jesus, who we are going to read
- 1:46about today as we continue reading through the Gospel of
- 1:49Luke. So why don't we do just that?
- 1:51Oh Holy Spirit, help us hear Your words to us about who we
- 1:58truly are and who You are for us as we read together Luke chapter
- 2:0521. While Jesus was in the temple,
- 2:18he watched the rich people dropping their gifts in the
- 2:21collection box. Then a poor widow came by and
- 2:25dropped in two small coins. I tell you the truth, Jesus
- 2:29said. This poor widow has given more
- 2:32than all the rest of them, for they have given in tiny part of
- 2:36their surplus. But she, poor as she is, has
- 2:39given everything she has. Some of his disciples began
- 2:44talking about the majestic stonework of the temple and
- 2:47these memorial decorations on the walls.
- 2:50But Jesus said the time is coming when all these things
- 2:53will be completely demolished. Not one stone will be left on
- 2:58top of another. Teacher.
- 3:00They asked, When will all this happen?
- 3:02What sign will show us that all these things are about to take
- 3:04place? He replied don't let anyone
- 3:08mislead you for many will come in my name claiming I am the
- 3:12Messiah and saying the time has come.
- 3:16But don't believe them and when you hear of wars and
- 3:19insurrections, don't panic. Yes, these things must take
- 3:23place first, but the end won't follow immediately.
- 3:27Then, he added, nation will go to war against nation and
- 3:31Kingdom against Kingdom. There will be great earthquakes,
- 3:35and there will be famines and plagues in many lands, and there
- 3:38will be terrifying things and great miraculous signs from
- 3:42heaven. But before all this occurs,
- 3:45there will be a time of great persecution.
- 3:48You will be dragged into synagogues and prisons, and you
- 3:51will stand trial before kings and governors because you are my
- 3:54followers. But this will be your
- 3:57opportunity to tell them about me.
- 3:59So don't worry in advance about how to answer the charges
- 4:02against you, for I will give you the right words and such wisdom
- 4:06that none of your opponents will be able to reply or refute you,
- 4:11even those closest to you. Your parents, brothers,
- 4:14relatives and friends will betray you.
- 4:17They will even kill some of you, and everyone will hate you
- 4:21because you are my followers. But not a hair of your head will
- 4:25perish. By standing firm you will win
- 4:28your souls, and when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies,
- 4:33then you will know that the time of its destruction has arrived.
- 4:37Then those in Judea must flee to the hills, those in Jerusalem
- 4:41must get out, and those out in the country should not return to
- 4:45the city. For those will be the days of
- 4:47God's vengeance, and the prophetic words of the
- 4:50Scriptures will be fulfilled. How terrible it will be for
- 4:54pregnant women and for nursing mothers in those days.
- 4:57For there will be disaster in the land and great anger against
- 5:01this people. They will be killed by the sword
- 5:04or sent away as captives to all the nations of the world.
- 5:09And Jerusalem will be trampled down by the Gentiles until the
- 5:13period of the Gentiles comes to an end.
- 5:16And there will be strange signs in the sun, moon and stars.
- 5:21And here on earth the nations will be in turmoil, perplexed by
- 5:24the roaring seas and strange tides.
- 5:27People will be terrified at what they see coming upon the earth,
- 5:31for the powers and the heavens will be shaken.
- 5:34Then everyone will see the Son of Man coming on a cloud with
- 5:39power and great glory. So when all these things begin
- 5:43to happen, stand and look up, for your salvation is near.
- 5:49Then He gave them this illustration.
- 5:51Notice the fig tree or any other tree when the leaves come out.
- 5:56You know without being told that summer is near.
- 5:59In the same way, when you see all these things taking place,
- 6:03you can know that the Kingdom of God is near.
- 6:06I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from
- 6:09the scene until all these things have taken place.
- 6:13Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never
- 6:17disappear. Watch out.
- 6:20Don't let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness and
- 6:24by the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you
- 6:28unaware like a trap, for that day will come upon everyone
- 6:32living on the earth. Keep alert at all times and pray
- 6:36that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors
- 6:40and stand before the Son of Man. Every day Jesus went to the
- 6:45temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the
- 6:49night on the Mount of Olives. The crowds gathered at the
- 6:52temple early each morning to hear him.
- 7:05Our Lord, as we read these words that you shared with your
- 7:08disciples, our hearts can go to anxiety as we hear of all these
- 7:13things and we can think how far away is that day.
- 7:17Lord, the point of what you're saying is that day will come and
- 7:21we won't know when it comes, but we just need to trust in You and
- 7:26be ready. Be ready by holding fast to You
- 7:31as our cornerstone, as our anchor, as our North Star, and
- 7:38living each day as though it could be our last.
- 7:41Focusing on you and your love and your Kingdom and sharing the
- 7:47incredible news of Your love and forgiveness to the world around
- 7:50us every day. So Lord, I pray that you would
- 7:56give us that lens of clarity that we would see each day as a
- 8:01gift from you, moving ever closer toward that day when we
- 8:05come face to face with you, however that comes.
- 8:10Our Lord, we love you and we know that when that day comes,
- 8:14it will be a wide open embrace that greets us with your loving
- 8:19words, welcoming us home. Our Jesus, thank you for all
- 8:24that you have done reconciling us to the Father so that on that
- 8:28day we will know a closeness and joy with you that we cannot even
- 8:33comprehend. So, Lord, we just thank you that
- 8:37you hold the future and you hold us in your hands, and we pray
- 8:42all of this in your all knowing, all powerful name, Amen.
