- 0:11Hello friends, it's Sean here. It's Wednesday, it's the 22nd of
- 0:16October and Happy Nut Day to you.
- 0:19This, this is the day that that we remember nuts and we
- 0:23celebrate nuts. And I'm not talking about that
- 0:25person who lives 2 doors down from you who's a little bit
- 0:27eccentric and you go, what a nut.
- 0:29No, this is the salted snacks that we throw into our mouths
- 0:33when we have a beverage and we enjoy them.
- 0:35Or you might sprinkle them on your cereal.
- 0:37That's how a lot of nuts get eaten at my place.
- 0:40But here's the thing that's going to blow your mind because
- 0:42it blew my mind. What is the most common nut of
- 0:46all that we would eat? Yeah, that's right.
- 0:47The lowly peanut. Do you know the peanut is not
- 0:51even a nut? It's actually a legume?
- 0:54It is more closely related to broad beans and black beans and
- 0:59kidney beans and lentils and chickpeas and peas than it is to
- 1:03an almond or a or a cashew. How mad is that?
- 1:07So next time you go to woollies and you buy a bag of mixed nuts
- 1:10and it's filled with 2/3 peanuts, you can take it back
- 1:14and say I'm sorry, there seems to be something wrong with my
- 1:16mixed nuts. It's filled with legumes instead
- 1:19of nuts. And see what the poor person,
- 1:22the cashier, says to you. Or maybe don't do that.
- 1:24That wouldn't be very kind with it.
- 1:26But there you go, It's the day of nuts.
- 1:28You can interpret that however you like, but more than that, it
- 1:31is the day where you have paused your life and you've come before
- 1:35the glorious God of the universe to hear some truth distilled by
- 1:40his followers, canonised by His church, ready for you to hear
- 1:44today. Oh, that is awesome.
- 1:47Let's get down to it, shall we? This reading is a short one, but
- 1:51it's a beauty. Let's read together Romans
- 1:54chapter 13. Everyone must submit to
- 2:06governing authorities, for all authority comes from God, and
- 2:10those in positions of authority have been placed there by God.
- 2:15So anyone who rebels against authority is rebelling against
- 2:18what God has instituted, and they will be punished for the
- 2:23authorities do not strike fear in people who are doing right,
- 2:27but in those who are doing wrong.
- 2:29Would you like to live without fear of the authorities?
- 2:32Do what is right and they will honour you.
- 2:36The authorities are God's servants, sent for your good.
- 2:40But if you are doing wrong, of course you should be afraid, for
- 2:44they have the power to punish you.
- 2:46They are God's servants, sent for the very purpose of
- 2:50punishing those who do what is wrong.
- 2:53So you must submit to them, not only to avoid punishment but
- 2:57also to keep a clear conscience. Pay your taxes too, for these
- 3:01same reasons, for government workers need to be paid.
- 3:06They are serving God in what they do.
- 3:08Give to everyone what you owe them.
- 3:11Pay your taxes and government fees to those who collect them,
- 3:14and give respect and honour to those who are in authority.
- 3:20Owe nothing to anyone except for your obligation to love one
- 3:24another. If you love your neighbour, you
- 3:27will fulfil the requirements of God's law.
- 3:29For the commandments say you must not commit adultery, you
- 3:33must not murder, you must not steal, you must not covet.
- 3:38These and other such commandments are summed up in
- 3:41this one commandment. Love your neighbour as yourself.
- 3:46Love does no wrong to others, so love fulfils the requirements of
- 3:51God's law. This is all the more urgent, for
- 3:55you know how late it is. Time is running out.
- 3:59Wake up, for our salvation is nearer now than when we first
- 4:02believed. The night is almost gone, the
- 4:06day of salvation will soon be here.
- 4:08So remove your dark deeds like dirty clothes, and put on the
- 4:13shining armour of right living. Because we belong to the day, we
- 4:18must live decent lives for all to see.
- 4:22Don't participate in the darkness of wild parties and
- 4:25drunkenness, or in sexual promiscuity and immoral living,
- 4:29or in quarrelling in jealousy. Instead, clothe yourselves with
- 4:35the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ and don't let yourself
- 4:39think about ways to indulge your evil desires.
- 4:53It sounds so simple, doesn't it? Lord, we just pray that you
- 4:58shape our hearts so that we do have love for our neighbours,
- 5:03love for the people around us in our lives.
- 5:07And as we think about those around us and as you continue to
- 5:10do that transforming work of love in our hearts, Lord, I pray
- 5:14that that love would extend to those in authority over us.
- 5:19We live in an age where it's all too easy and cool to criticise
- 5:24those who lead, to see their weaknesses and their faults, of
- 5:28which there are many, and to pull them down.
- 5:33But Lord, I pray that we would be your Kingdom people who would
- 5:38see the authority as something that you have given and that we
- 5:43would pray for our leaders. So Lord, we do that right now.
- 5:47We pray for those decision makers who shape our societies.
- 5:52Lord, they don't get it right every time.
- 5:54So I pray that you would give them your wisdom, that you would
- 5:58shape the way that they rule, the way that they govern, that
- 6:04you would soften their hearts with your compassion and love,
- 6:08and that you would surround them with good people who speak truth
- 6:12and wisdom to them. Thank you for giving us a world
- 6:19of structure and order that we can live in this place with the
- 6:23freedom to love you and worship you, our good, good God.
- 6:28We pray all of this in your wonderful name, Jesus, Amen.
