- 0:30Music. And welcome back to the Boundary
- 0:48Corner Podcast with my partners, Brian Siegler and Jonathan
- 0:51Talley. I'm Curtis Wilson, and this
- 0:54episode is brought to you by. Doctor Jeremy Katz down at the
- 0:58Main Street Pharmacy in Blacksburg.
- 1:00Your friendly neighborhood pharmacy, 301 S Main St. in
- 1:03Blacksburg. Fellas, it's been a rough
- 1:07weekend. How's everybody doing?
- 1:10Still pissed I'm living. I woke up the the the food
- 1:17tasted like shit, but I'm still here, so.
- 1:20Food tasted like shit, but you're still here.
- 1:22What? Food tastes bad after the loss,
- 1:26man. Whoa.
- 1:27Everything with no loss. A little while.
- 1:29I want the ass kicking as. The ass with it.
- 1:31We got our ass drilled, We got. Crushed by Louisville, which we
- 1:36are going to definitely get into tonight.
- 1:38Don't worry about that. Y'all.
- 1:41We also are going to take a look at the Boston College game
- 1:43because this becomes a very pivotal game in the Hokies
- 1:47chances of making it to a bowl this season.
- 1:50So we're going to talk about that, know the enemy, breakdown,
- 1:53some of their players and some stuff.
- 1:55But before we get into all that tonight, let's talk about hoop
- 1:59season starting last night. Let's start with some bright
- 2:02spots and let's start with the men's first as they take care of
- 2:06Coppin State 155. Just an absolute thrashing from
- 2:10beginning to end. And I don't know how much y'all
- 2:13got to see. It was a Monday night, things
- 2:15going on. We all got lives.
- 2:17What were y'all's takeaways from it, Ron?
- 2:19What was your first take away from it, man?
- 2:22I mean I I like the depth I'm seeing so far like out the gate
- 2:26I'm seeing a lot more depth, you know a little bit better in the
- 2:30front court, a little bit better in the back court too.
- 2:32So I think overall I like what I'm seeing so far.
- 2:36I like the, the addition of Nickel having an an extra
- 2:40sharpshooter out there. You know, you throw in Rex
- 2:44Steiner too, I mean. That's that's a good combo to
- 2:48have out there that can shoot the three nickel kind of score
- 2:51from a bunch of different spots. So that's going to be a good off
- 2:54the bench 1-2 punch for us. Just kind of looking forward to
- 3:01see how they progress in jail as the as the season goes along.
- 3:05Let you tell. I know you were at your son's
- 3:06game watching him hoop it up, but obviously I'm sure you
- 3:09checked out highlights, did some reading, did some stat watching.
- 3:11What do you think? Yeah, kind of like what Brian
- 3:14said. I mean, the depth on the team
- 3:15was. A good thing looks like
- 3:18everybody who who got in and scored, which is always good.
- 3:21Of course when you blow somebody out, you know, so everybody got
- 3:25in and got to get, you know, get a bucket.
- 3:29Team looks bigger. You got people coming off the
- 3:31bench with some size and depth and you got some veterans You
- 3:37don't. You don't.
- 3:38It's not just young players. You know, when you seem to run a
- 3:42system like Mike Young, you got to have some veteran leadership
- 3:45because. I mean, you're not going to get
- 3:50five stars just coming in, coming in, you know, ready to
- 3:53play. So having some of those players
- 3:57that are transferred in, veterans have been, you know,
- 4:00seniors or juniors definitely helps.
- 4:03Especially when you're trying to play for something like, you
- 4:05know, getting into the tournament or if you do get to
- 4:07the tournament, you know going deep into the tournament having.
- 4:11Somebody who's kind of been there and seen some different
- 4:13things helps. So good balance of old and young
- 4:17players. Yeah, I'm with y'all on both of
- 4:19that. And Brian, you mentioned him
- 4:21earlier, me and Tally were talking about.
- 4:27Tyler Nickel, There's a reason. Tyler Nickel, So many records
- 4:30here in the state of Virginia. There's a reason Carolina wanted
- 4:33him so bad and the way he looked coming off the bench, I mean his
- 4:37his stat line last night was 4 for 9 from the field, 12 points.
- 4:42He grabbed seven boards, had a block.
- 4:46And Tyler, you said it just second ago.
- 4:49We looked. Bigger.
- 4:51We looked bigger between him. Kidd looked bigger than he did
- 4:55last year. We going to get there, Eric,
- 4:58That's our as as one of our buddies, Eric there chiming in.
- 5:01Eric, we're going to get there. Got to give us a little while.
- 5:03Got a lot to talk about. We look bigger, we look more
- 5:07physical. Between Beran, Kidd, Obviously
- 5:10Padula, Collins and Couture Older along with Poteet.
- 5:16And Long and I was telling Tally.
- 5:18I think that this team, I mean it's great to see all of all,
- 5:23all 11 guys score that played last night.
- 5:25It's great to see that. It really is.
- 5:27But I sit here and with the starting five, as long as we can
- 5:30get something every game out of Poteet, Long and Richtensteiner,
- 5:36along with nickel, again, quality minutes, they ain't got
- 5:40to go out there and score 15 points a game.
- 5:42But it's go in there and be effective.
- 5:44The team can do a lot. But let's be realistic, Callie,
- 5:48you were looking up there. You were saying it's going to be
- 5:50on ACC Network. We did not get a test this early
- 5:53against a division, a Power 5 opponent, but we get to play
- 5:57South Carolina on. Thursday or excuse?
- 6:02Me Friday night, I don't know much about them.
- 6:05I'll be honest. If you know y'all, I'm sure
- 6:08David Cunningham's writing something up, but I think
- 6:11getting a test that early. What do you need to see from on
- 6:14Friday night, both of y'all? I let Tally go.
- 6:19Brian, go ahead. Well, I'll go.
- 6:21I mean, mainly for me, man, when it comes to basketball, I'm
- 6:25always like, I don't care about all the fluff on the schedule
- 6:28until you get the ACC play. You know, when you talk
- 6:31basketball, when you get the conference wins or conference
- 6:35games, everything's a little bit different.
- 6:36Everything's a little bit more intense.
- 6:38So we have been starting the season kind of like you said,
- 6:41Curtis Whit. A lot of teams and looks like,
- 6:43oh, we're rolling and then next thing you know you hit some
- 6:46Power Five type teams and then you start to get into ACC play
- 6:49and things just fall apart or you start seeing the true team
- 6:54come out. So I don't know much about South
- 6:56Carolina, but I do know that there's South Carolina there,
- 6:59SCC opponent, you know, and it's the second game of the season.
- 7:02So it's going to show you, you know, a little bit and it's, I
- 7:07don't want to say it's going to show you what team you have, but
- 7:09it's just good to see it early in the season.
- 7:11You know what I'm saying? For better or worse, you got
- 7:13something to build on because I feel like we were kind of riding
- 7:15high last year until we played with College of Charleston on
- 7:20somebody weird. And next time, you know, you
- 7:22start seeing some inefficient play in that loss and some
- 7:27things that people kind of took advantage of.
- 7:30So playing against a team that's probably, you know, similar in
- 7:34size and skill, Again, don't know a lot about South Carolina,
- 7:38but you know. Know they're probably going to
- 7:40have some size and some skilled players.
- 7:42You know it's going to show us kind of what we what we got for
- 7:45the year and what we can make adjustments and things like
- 7:48that. Matt, you Ron.
- 7:51Yeah, I agree. I think this is going to kind of
- 7:53be that that early test kind of similar to what we saw from Penn
- 7:56State last year. Hopefully that's not a a 40
- 8:00minute grind fest like that game turned out to be, and then
- 8:05obviously. You know what we did against
- 8:06college at Charleston I like Tally was saying after that so
- 8:09but I think it's a good test like like he said there's going
- 8:12to be some size they should have some decent guard play that
- 8:17we'll need to get used to as we get into conference play because
- 8:22I think when we got into conference play last year any
- 8:24team with guards they they really gave us some fits we we
- 8:28we didn't show up the way we did two defensively against those
- 8:31type of teams so and we see better play on that front. 100%
- 8:35and and it's good. South Carolina but it's not just
- 8:37South Carolina because then we got Boise.
- 8:39Boise was a tournament team last year.
- 8:41Don't forget that. And then we play Auburn who was
- 8:43the number two seed last year in the ACCSEC Challenge later on
- 8:47this month. So I think it's what Y'all said
- 8:49earlier last year it took five games and then we play College
- 8:53of Charleston, who was a good team, who did make the
- 8:55tournament, if I can don't recall, or if they were one of
- 8:58the better teams in the So Con and that that that messed us up.
- 9:03Penn State wasn't that there were an OK team last year.
- 9:06Here we're probably going to get you're getting again AP5 in
- 9:09again, AP5 in South Carolina, and then two teams that made the
- 9:13tournament and Boise and Auburn over the last five years have
- 9:16made the tournament consistently.
- 9:18You know they're good teams and there's your barometer.
- 9:20Go in and beat those two teams. Maybe we feel something
- 9:23different, but maybe not. All right, let's flip off that
- 9:26and let's go over to the ladies side because they also played
- 9:29both in Castle for those who are in Blacksburg.
- 9:33I mean back-to-back games in Castle with the ladies #8 ranked
- 9:37who take care of the high point Panthers 9455.
- 9:44And I mean this, this, this. Similar to the men this wasn't a
- 9:49game after the first half. It did.
- 9:51It didn't even feel that close because, I mean, they jumped.
- 9:53They really jumped on them in that first quarter and just kind
- 9:56of wrote it out after that. Yeah, Liz was good as always.
- 10:02But having one extra shooter on the floor, they've got a shooter
- 10:09everywhere. Then they got Liz in the post.
- 10:11That's going to be hard because you can't double team Liz all
- 10:13the time like teams were doing last year.
- 10:18Liz is a monster, man. I mean, she's just a 20.
- 10:22I think she had 2711, something like that.
- 10:24Yeah, it's just 12 or like 12 or 17 shooting.
- 10:28It's like. Oh, Andretti back.
- 10:32I'm about to get on. I'm about to get on him later.
- 10:35Welcome back, Andretti. But yeah, Liz and the postman,
- 10:38it's going to be a nightmare for most teams that they play.
- 10:42And every year is different. You know what I'm saying?
- 10:44Like during the summer, you're going to get better, you're
- 10:47going to jail, you're going to get worse, whatever.
- 10:49You can see it in. In LSULSU came out and got the
- 10:53heads beating. And really, in the first game
- 10:55now I don't put it put it on him.
- 10:57So you know it's not just. Oh, well, this team's going to
- 11:00win it. We, you know, you got to go
- 11:02play. So to see a star come out like
- 11:06she did against a inferior team and just go and dominate and do
- 11:10what she's supposed to do, you know, that's what I expected.
- 11:13But it's good to see. Yeah, I think she made her first
- 11:16nine shots or something from the, yeah.
- 11:17Some crazy she was. 12 She scored 27 points, I mean 27 and
- 11:2311 was the stat line. But y'all y'all make the point
- 11:25of Brian. You made the point about having
- 11:27the out the additional shooters because you had them more.
- 11:29You got King and now you've got a few others that can K who can
- 11:34light it up. But take a look at Olivia Sumal
- 11:37stat line. 20 minutes played. She only had a couple points,
- 11:42four points grabbed, eight boards blocked a shot.
- 11:45She's a six, two. She's listed as a guard, but at
- 11:49six, two again, it's that whole piece of we.
- 11:52Need a more? Physicality, right?
- 11:54That's what lost us at LSU game was having the physicality.
- 11:57We wore down. We wore down late.
- 11:59In between Michelle and her, they both grabbed eight boards.
- 12:04That's big. That's big because the whole
- 12:07thing, what that means is what you said.
- 12:10Kitley is a beast, and now Kitley doesn't have to go in and
- 12:13fight and claw all the time on the interior.
- 12:16We know she can do it, but there's some games it's going to
- 12:19be like. We got to save her because we're
- 12:21going to need those baskets in the fourth quarter now.
- 12:24Now they've got you won't talk about a monster game, Monster
- 12:30game 8 versus 2 in Charlotte Thursday night versus Iowa and
- 12:35Caitlin Clark, I mean I was discussing with Brian here, you
- 12:41watched it. You going to watch the NFL game,
- 12:43you can watch the ladies hoops games because.
- 12:45And there's bears. Fuck the NFL game.
- 12:49It's. Bears Panther If you're not a
- 12:50fan of either team, it doesn't matter it.
- 12:52Doesn't matter unless you're gambling or maybe you got
- 12:55somebody in fantasy on there just want to see Khalil Herbert
- 12:58run or something. But like, I mean you you won't
- 13:02talk about Barometer that's going to tell the story for both
- 13:06those teams real early in this season?
- 13:09Right. Yeah, we're going, we're going
- 13:12to see how how much that mix up is working for this team
- 13:15obviously I think. We have a little more gelling to
- 13:18do than they probably do just with you know some of the holes
- 13:21that we're plugging true. But when you look at it, having
- 13:26having Liz in the post, having a more that can get her own shot
- 13:30and then having three other three-point shooters on the team
- 13:34that can stretch the floor and give Liz those one on ones.
- 13:37You know what? I I I think we're going to give
- 13:40them some problems. I know Caitlin Clark is a beast,
- 13:42but I think we're going to give them some problems.
- 13:44We'll see and. Obviously, probably, definitely
- 13:46going to have a home court advantage down in Charlotte.
- 13:50Tons of Hokies if y'all hadn't seen it, a bunch of people you
- 13:53know in a Charlotte area, you're going to be there.
- 13:54It's not a long drive from Blacksburg either, so I expect
- 13:57that to be a hokey leaning crowd.
- 14:00All right, one more thing to talk about before we get into
- 14:03football here and let's talk about probably.
- 14:06I don't know. You can argue between women's
- 14:08hoops or men or wrestling, which is the bigger national power
- 14:11right now. Wrestling opened up this week
- 14:14with the Southeast open, which was down in the New River Valley
- 14:19area. Y'all know I had a tight text up
- 14:21our buddy David Fuqua. Me and him got back and forth
- 14:24because I knew it was happening. I knew he's paying attention at
- 14:27it like crazy. 5 Hokies took wins in it.
- 14:32Four of the freshman or sophomore variety, he explained
- 14:35to me. In this tournament, every year
- 14:37you have your basic or you have all the weight classes, but
- 14:40there's also a freshman, sophomore stuff so that the
- 14:42younger guys get out there and compete.
- 14:44We took four of those. Kayla Penson, who's obviously a
- 14:47beast upon himself, you know, made podium last year at the
- 14:53national finals. He won his bracket.
- 14:56Sam Fisher. Who was, I believe, a younger
- 15:00guy last year? He finished second.
- 15:02The only guy that beat him was a #3 ranked player or #3 ranked
- 15:06wrestler in his weight class in the country for Oregon State.
- 15:10So that's a good start for that kid.
- 15:13What? Dave's a little bit concerned
- 15:15about with future. A little bit concerned about is
- 15:17Sam. Latona got knocked out in the
- 15:19semis. He finished third place.
- 15:21Sam obviously did some big stuff last year, but.
- 15:26I asked him, I was like, well, how do you feel?
- 15:27He's like, overall this is a really good showing and for what
- 15:32we did, especially with the younger guys coming up.
- 15:35And then I asked him about Ohio State because that's a big one
- 15:39Friday night. And Castle, I'm sure Castle will
- 15:41be packed. I'm not sure if it's on ACC
- 15:43Network or anything but. The.
- 15:45Explanation was this, and I'm going to read it here from David
- 15:51earlier the season. Wrestling will not put stress on
- 15:55players. If you were slightly nicked,
- 15:58don't matter. Get healthy.
- 16:01So what? He said.
- 16:02This could be. And I know I'm doing a lot of
- 16:04talking here. I literally got me and him have
- 16:06a conversation for like 20 minutes.
- 16:08I got a whole bunch of stuff here for wrestlers.
- 16:12March matters. Getting there matters too.
- 16:15You've got to win. You can't just sit out all
- 16:17season. But if you're banged up, there
- 16:20ain't no need to go out there and stretch your body.
- 16:22Stress it out. What he did say and this is his
- 16:25opinion and we're going to try to have David on sometime
- 16:27between now and the end of the year just to give us some
- 16:30highlights on it. But it's the deepest we've ever
- 16:33been. You know we're we're fourth in
- 16:38the country right now and in most of the polls and what?
- 16:45He said Friday night. Hodgepodge.
- 16:46You guys only full, only fully healthy guys going.
- 16:51You know, Tally, You were joking in here.
- 16:52You don't know much about wrestling.
- 16:53You said you've watched. We probably need to go get some
- 16:55of them wrestling guys to get on the football team.
- 16:58They taking people down. We wasn't fucking tackling
- 17:00nobody, so we might need to get some of them wrestlers to come
- 17:03out here and show us how to tackle or just put some uniforms
- 17:06on. So that's the only part I know
- 17:09now I know a little about wrestling but I didn't get to
- 17:11watch any of the match, so that's why I was saying I didn't
- 17:13really, I didn't really, you know, pay attention to the first
- 17:16match. But I will be tuning in on on
- 17:19Friday. Checking some of that out,
- 17:21definitely. Paying attention to it, Brian,
- 17:25you got anything on this? I know you did one season of
- 17:28wrestling. I.
- 17:29Did I did one season of wrestling in high school?
- 17:32Just for leverage. Right.
- 17:34What's that? Helps with leverage, right?
- 17:36It does. It does.
- 17:37It helps with conditioning, too. You can make it through a
- 17:42wrestling season. Football season ain't nothing,
- 17:44man. We might have a Fuqua and get
- 17:48Jason on our our Music guy. Officially, he made a video
- 17:53today. His gig season's over because
- 17:55he's got to start assistant wrestling coaching this.
- 17:58Week So. We're going to definitely be
- 18:01paying attention to it again with all the stuff we've got
- 18:04going on, I let. Him slide that it was country
- 18:06roads. I let it I let it slide.
- 18:08I I did know about Virginia. I, I said, I said, You know, you
- 18:11got you got a song that's mentioning West Virginia.
- 18:15Written while driving through western Maryland, About for
- 18:18geography of Western Virginia. So it's true.
- 18:23John Denver was high as hell when he wrote that song, clearly
- 18:26not even a joke. All righty.
- 18:28Well, you know, it was nice talking about some positive
- 18:31vibes from Hokie Nation, but we got to tell the truth to.
- 18:34You here, we. Go we need we need to have some
- 18:38sound effects because clearly when we have good times we going
- 18:41to show you all at least a few highlights from the game.
- 18:44We need to have some sound effects.
- 18:45But let's tell the truth Tuesday and boys, I mean let's talk
- 18:49about what went well, because in my opinion, you name it, it
- 18:53probably didn't go well. What went well?
- 18:57I got one thing. All right, one.
- 19:00Thing What's that? The scoring streak continues.
- 19:06We didn't get shut out. Didn't get shut out.
- 19:08That's the only. Good thing I can pull out of
- 19:10that tape. I'm proud of you for for
- 19:13thinking of that, because I didn't never even think of that.
- 19:15It's pretty good bro, either. I think of it.
- 19:18Only thing that I had good that went good was I didn't go to
- 19:22fucking Louisville. I.
- 19:24Saved my money. I had a.
- 19:26Bad fucking feeling. I saved my money, kept that in
- 19:30my pocket, and I didn't take my ass to Louisville.
- 19:34Because you know how pissed I would have been if I'd have went
- 19:36to that game? We've got drug like that.
- 19:39I'd have been like Andretti. I'd have been on here talking
- 19:43crazy well. You also probably would have
- 19:45been hammered too, with all that bourbon that was been flowing.
- 19:48Oh yeah. Yeah, I did.
- 19:49I would have got on space. Saturday night and you were on
- 19:52space Saturday night. It would have been, it would
- 19:55have been bad. All right.
- 19:57So real quick, real quick all. Right.
- 19:59So emotion, we're done with what went well.
- 20:01Let me move on. Yes, we're good.
- 20:04We're good. That, that's it.
- 20:05That's it. Tally saved money and we didn't
- 20:08get shut out. That's it.
- 20:10So y'all, let's let's get to it, because it ain't no, it ain't no
- 20:14sugar what went bad. And I'm going to tell y'all, we
- 20:18get into some of the technical stuff.
- 20:19The way I felt watching that game was we legitimately got
- 20:23outclassed every single phase. It was felt like every single
- 20:27play of the game. I think they had Connor
- 20:31Stallions on their sideline, man.
- 20:34You. Saying they stealing plays.
- 20:37It looked like you got the gate, man, didn't it?
- 20:39Shit. Oh man, it was.
- 20:41Well, look. At the first play, I mean, but
- 20:45what do you think, Brian? What's some of the stuff that
- 20:46just went real bad, and why do you feel it went bad?
- 20:51Pass protection was awful, and what they did was that they sent
- 20:57a lot of, well time blitzes. They slanted into our uncovered
- 21:03and made them have to make a decision.
- 21:05We didn't do a very good job communicating and making those
- 21:08decisions, and we had free guys running at the quarterback way
- 21:12too damn often. All right.
- 21:18Charlie man, I don't even know where to start.
- 21:20Did. You let me go because we got a
- 21:22big list here. That's.
- 21:22What I'm saying it's just whatever, whatever you think
- 21:25about with bad, with bad, man, it was just the main thing for
- 21:28me. That I think went bad was just
- 21:30our game plan. I don't think that our game plan
- 21:33was. Well.
- 21:35Thought out. I don't know what the fuck we
- 21:37did last week. And I'm saying we as a
- 21:39collective. Coaches, players, equipment,
- 21:43staff, cheerleaders, the band, the four cadets, fucking Jeremy
- 21:50at the AT Jeremy. You got to do a better job of
- 21:53getting people Tylenol. Because it looks like we had.
- 21:55Fucking headaches out there, I don't know what.
- 21:59I don't. Know, but the game plan was
- 22:02totally not what I expected it to be and we'll get to that a
- 22:06little bit later. But it was it was awful since
- 22:09you since you brought Jeremy to this.
- 22:10I I got to see Jeremy on Saturday just before kickoff.
- 22:14Just before kickoff. And and he had a he had a new
- 22:19ritual that he was trying out because he had learned,
- 22:21apparently that when he doesn't hammer Jameson before a game and
- 22:25he's not hammered off his ass, we've started winning more.
- 22:29So he was he was drinking light beer and not Jameson at the bar.
- 22:34Well, I'm glad we fucking lost drinking light beer.
- 22:37That's what happens. Get back on that Jameson.
- 22:40He'll go back shots all night. You got to start early.
- 22:45We play at 12 this week. Oh man, that man going to be in
- 22:49all sorts of trouble. Well, Callie, you you made a
- 22:51point. I'm going to jump on it real
- 22:53quick here about the game plans. It it didn't look good.
- 22:56But what what always makes me more worried that you know what
- 22:59if if they just scouted you good and you thought hey this is
- 23:01going to work and it doesn't work.
- 23:03I just felt like we were just slow to slow to adjust on the
- 23:07sides of the balls. And I know early that was some
- 23:10execution, right. It was them doing stuff.
- 23:13But Brian, you said it a few minutes ago, the kind of
- 23:15stallions thing, they look like this is how we're going to
- 23:18attack and. And it led to the bad pass
- 23:20protection, the ineffective run game tally.
- 23:24You texted us and it's like, can we just run the quarterback?
- 23:28We finally did. It took to the middle of the
- 23:30second quarter. Why?
- 23:33Go ahead? No.
- 23:35It's just when I'm texting, y'all I'm saying, we're watching
- 23:38the game. Honestly, I'm going to be very
- 23:40candid with what I feel. Yes.
- 23:42I feel like the coaching staff didn't believe we could win the
- 23:45game, so they say it. We're going to go out and we're
- 23:48going to protect everybody that we can protect.
- 23:50I don't know if you have some people banged up.
- 23:52I don't know if of course you do.
- 23:53It's football. But it's like there was like
- 23:55drones. We got to protect you.
- 23:57We got the rest of these games that we can win.
- 24:00We just want to make sure that, you know, we can get through
- 24:02these games, we can get to Boston College, we can get to
- 24:06back home and we can get to UVA. So we start dropping back.
- 24:12No, that's not what we're good at.
- 24:15We haven't done that good all year.
- 24:18You know, we start out by moving the quarterback, moving the
- 24:21pocket, running the quarterback. And like you said, we didn't do
- 24:24that till the second-half and then we start moving the ball.
- 24:28You know, two had 60 yards at halftime and then we stopped
- 24:32going to what works, you know? Again, I know they made
- 24:34adjustments and Louisville's a good team.
- 24:36They're a little bit better than I anticipated them being, but I
- 24:39don't think they were 34 to 3 better than us.
- 24:43You know it's. Just game plan execution.
- 24:46US coming out flat looking scared, no life from coaches.
- 24:53From what I can see on TV. It was just a lot of stuff, man.
- 24:56And it was it was disheartening to watch because we watch these,
- 25:02we watch this team week after week and we study and we go back
- 25:06and look at tape that wasn't the same team that we've seen
- 25:09playing. Then people say, Oh well, you
- 25:12know, we play different at home and we was getting fucking
- 25:14fucked up at home. For a long time, it ain't just
- 25:16like we've been a great home team.
- 25:18We won a couple of home games. We had started seeing
- 25:21progression. The team had started progressing
- 25:24every week, you know, and people say, oh, well, we just beat up
- 25:28on bad teams. The bad teams was fucking us up.
- 25:31We've been getting beat by bad teams.
- 25:34So it's not a excuse. It's just you started seeing
- 25:38progression and then we took a huge step back, you know what
- 25:41I'm saying? When that part was like, very,
- 25:44very. Disheartening and it just makes
- 25:47you angry to watch, man. It's like you don't want to go
- 25:49back and watch tape. You don't want to go back and
- 25:52because you see everything going wrong.
- 25:54I know Brian was probably like me.
- 25:56When you go look at some of the steps and people crossing your
- 25:59face and it's like we just look lost, you know it was it was
- 26:04horrible. They got, they got punched in
- 26:06the mouth and they just didn't know how to counterpunch like.
- 26:08And that's coaching staff, that's players, that's
- 26:11everybody. And I mean, when we look at it
- 26:14like it was just, it was frustrating to watch because,
- 26:18you know, from a game plan perspective, both script and
- 26:22adjustments, that's the worst game.
- 26:24Yeah, we've seen from Tyler Bowen since Rutgers.
- 26:28And really, you could even go back to Purdue.
- 26:31You want to go. You want to go back to the last
- 26:33two seasons that might have been the worst in the last two
- 26:36seasons. It.
- 26:37Was bad. Like see?
- 26:38Like go back to last year and think.
- 26:41I don't think there was anything that where it looked like they
- 26:46were completely ready for us and we had no quick counters and and
- 26:51you know. Then you had the procedural
- 26:52penalties, which I know you both of.
- 26:54Y'all will say that's that happened early.
- 26:56It was loud there, but that's also probably that confidence.
- 27:00Things like Brian, you said it numerous times, you jump because
- 27:04you know that guy's going to beat you.
- 27:06Yeah. Well, you just got to start
- 27:07people. People start whooping on your
- 27:08ass and talking that shit to you.
- 27:10You start thinking about it and jumping off sides and getting
- 27:13scared and moving around. So it was just, it was it was a
- 27:16bad showing all around you thinking about getting beaten.
- 27:19So the thing about doing your job.
- 27:21That's true. Now, a couple other things.
- 27:23I mean, you know, defense, not a great game either.
- 27:26I mean, it was, you know, we didn't.
- 27:30Finish. This was the first probably
- 27:31time. Probably.
- 27:33Maybe Rutgers? Like we didn't finish because in
- 27:37the Marshall game we were finishing a few times.
- 27:39We just is what it is. We didn't finish when we had one
- 27:43sack after 15 in the last two games.
- 27:47And then probably the most upsetting part to me watching it
- 27:50was the regression back on the run fits.
- 27:54Because even the Florida State game, yeah, they broke 2/1 was a
- 27:58bad fit. The other guy just beat us.
- 28:00But it it had been since Marshall since we saw that.
- 28:05Right. Play after.
- 28:06Play. Play after.
- 28:07Play. And now.
- 28:08Now to our credit, we only gave up one huge, huge run, right?
- 28:13So maybe not a full aggression, but what do you what do you
- 28:16think? I mean don't even look at it was
- 28:17it was the IT was the small gashes the the ones that are
- 28:20really kind of kill you too because not only are you getting
- 28:24giving up yards, but you're staying on the field and all
- 28:28that stuff too. So you're getting worn down and
- 28:30that's that's what we saw with of the second-half and how the
- 28:33that score kind of ballooned on us a little bit, you know,
- 28:36especially the way we kind of opened that second-half.
- 28:41If it and it felt like that second-half opening score was
- 28:44kind of when every bit of life that was still left in the team
- 28:47kind of went away, right like it, it just looked like they
- 28:51were going through the motions the rest of the way.
- 28:52And I mean, I get it, but I mean it's still you know A3 score
- 28:58game, you get you, you turn around you get a touchdown
- 29:01you're right back in it. But I think just confidence
- 29:04wise, they they were shot at that point and you know I don't
- 29:09know how much of the the run fit.
- 29:12Like I said, it still wasn't awful, but.
- 29:15You know how much of that is Strowman?
- 29:18Not really playing A whole lot. And we might not have him this
- 29:20week too. So it's hard to tell if that's
- 29:24something that's going to be a symptom of that's creeping back
- 29:27on us for the rest of the year, or if that's just kind of a one
- 29:30off because of who we were playing, because of who we
- 29:33didn't have available. We'll see.
- 29:35I'm. I'm hoping to see better this
- 29:36week at BC, but that doesn't inspire confidence, no?
- 29:40Man, it's just like we didn't have the the We can talk about
- 29:43coaching, we can talk about coordinators, we can talk about
- 29:47uniforms. The team didn't have no fight.
- 29:50Like I seen Louisville pushing our guys around.
- 29:53The fucking stupid ass commentator with the ugly
- 29:56haircut kept talking that shit. Oh, Louisville is hitting,
- 29:59they're, they're hitting. Oh, I think two was returning to
- 30:02kick and he got hit. He got popped or something and
- 30:05they just made such a big deal out of it.
- 30:07But I seen none of our guys like bow up, fight back.
- 30:12You know, like we have been scrapping with people.
- 30:14Somebody get in our face, we push them off like.
- 30:17You know what I'm saying? We just didn't have none of
- 30:19that. We just getting hit and it's
- 30:20just, oh, everybody just kind of getting up.
- 30:22It was like just went in with no fight, no heart, no effort.
- 30:26So that is a player thing. But that's a like Robbie was in
- 30:31here earlier talking, you know, I think he said, you know,
- 30:34sometimes that happens in coaching, but a coach has to see
- 30:38that and has to rally his troops, you know what I'm
- 30:41saying? You know, stop pumping them up.
- 30:45When you get somebody on the ground, leave them down.
- 30:47Now help your own teammates up like we in a dogpipe.
- 30:49Be friends after it's over. We just didn't mindset, so I
- 30:54haven't seen that in a lot of games this year like that.
- 30:59That's. I mean, no, that this is the
- 31:01game, yeah. Like I haven't seen and.
- 31:04And I think, let me flip to this real quick.
- 31:05Yeah, go. Ahead that's.
- 31:06Something I'm guessing you weren't prepared for because the
- 31:08other eight games we played all year, Rutgers.
- 31:13I mean, I'm thinking with the losses, Rutgers, Marshall,
- 31:16Purdue, Florida State. We.
- 31:19Fought those games? Yeah, you punch back.
- 31:22At least that kind of shocked you.
- 31:23Like, that's your big shock. Like, what are we doing?
- 31:26Yeah. It was just that the no fight,
- 31:28like you said, skipping over to what I wasn't prepared for.
- 31:31I was prepared for Louisville to be a good team, you know, and
- 31:36even us talking, I said I don't know if we win, but I didn't
- 31:38think it was going to get beat by 30 points.
- 31:41You know what I'm saying? I thought we would at least
- 31:43cover. I think that that it was 10
- 31:45points when we first started out.
- 31:47I thought, man, they may get us by 10, they may get us by 7-8.
- 31:51No, wrong. It was it was nothing.
- 31:54And it wasn't nothing they did. That was so their number one
- 31:57receiver was out. They didn't do anything great.
- 32:01Curtis had something that kind of threw him by surprise, but he
- 32:05said he wasn't prepared for with the quarterback.
- 32:08So I'll let him talk about that and then go back on it.
- 32:10What'd you say about that? Well.
- 32:12Plummer. Brian looked at the tape and
- 32:14Plummer was like a last option Resort was to run Plummer and
- 32:17Plummer had five for 25 and they were, they were like one was an
- 32:2111 yard run on like third down and it was just like, are you
- 32:24kidding? Then he got like 5 in four in
- 32:27six, and it's just like you're sitting here and it's just like,
- 32:30I hated that because the expectation was he's not going
- 32:33to do anything with his legs and I don't know if it was all
- 32:37aggressiveness. But they knew it, and they took
- 32:39advantage of it early. And what happens when a guy who
- 32:42doesn't run runs a few times early nearby?
- 32:45His eye starts looking. They don't trust themselves,
- 32:48but. You know, what's he doing?
- 32:50You know what it felt like to me.
- 32:52It felt like they watched our tape and said, oh, they got
- 32:54something that works. We're going to do it.
- 32:57They they look what their game plan was, was what I thought our
- 33:01game plan was going to be. You know, moving, not even
- 33:04saying that the quarterback has to run so much, but just that
- 33:07little bit of effectiveness that he had, like you say, it started
- 33:11shifting people's eyes one way or the other and things like
- 33:14that. And it's just that's when the
- 33:16run fits get off, you know, that's when we start having some
- 33:18problems. But that's what we've been
- 33:20doing. That's why people was having
- 33:22problems with us. We just didn't go to it.
- 33:25It's true, yeah. I mean the thing I I'd really
- 33:29say is how badly we tackled in space.
- 33:34Like there was a there was a lot of missed tackles and we hadn't
- 33:36really seen that many missed tackles the last month month and
- 33:391/2. So I wasn't ready for that.
- 33:42I I I was not expecting us to be that poor in our execution in
- 33:48the tackling. So that that's that's one of
- 33:51those things where you know a three yard game becomes the
- 33:55first down or the three yard loss becomes A5 yard gain and
- 33:59now they're you know on a good cadence for their for the down
- 34:02and distance and they can have the full playbook at their
- 34:06disposal on second and third down.
- 34:07So it it that's what really frustrated me is because coming
- 34:12off a game where we got off the field with regularity, we could
- 34:15not get off the fucking field, no.
- 34:18We. Could not get off the field and
- 34:19that was probably again very disappointing for us.
- 34:22But let let's flip it because like we we went through the bad.
- 34:25We talked about it right at 20 minutes here about the bad but
- 34:30what do we got to do better moving forward.
- 34:32And before we go, before we have these other three points tally,
- 34:35I, I, I jumped on the space where you were on Don be making
- 34:39some points and you got to talk about the road mentality thing
- 34:42because it's an issue now. It is a serious issue.
- 34:46We are one and nine under the staff.
- 34:48We are now O and three this year, no O and four this year.
- 34:53Right. O and four, yeah, O and four.
- 34:55O and four this year. What has to change because I I
- 35:01I. Listened to you talk about 5
- 35:02minutes. Yeah.
- 35:04So real quick for the people who who don't work in on the on the
- 35:09space after the game. I was just talking about, you
- 35:13know as a athlete, high school. For me it's much different from
- 35:19college. But I I started there, so I'm
- 35:21talking about. When you're home, you got
- 35:24certain rituals, You know, that's just for you being home,
- 35:28you know, for me. I came on the field.
- 35:31We warmed up. I would come out just my, you
- 35:33know, my pants on, you know, my undershirt, my helmet.
- 35:38I got my I always put my gloves on my mask and I would walk the
- 35:43field and my mom and grandma sat on the opposite side.
- 35:47They would sit on the opposite side because at our field in
- 35:50high school. The visitor side was the old
- 35:55side, so it was made out of like stone.
- 35:57So the seats were wider. You could, you know, you could
- 36:02fit your butt on those seats a little bit better.
- 36:04So the home side was the newer side where it had more seating,
- 36:07but they were more of the, you know, the silver bleachers, you
- 36:11know, my mom was like, I don't like them, I'm going to sit on
- 36:13this side. So she always sit on the
- 36:15opposite side, on the, on the, on the opposing side.
- 36:19So I would walk the field. You know, do my listen to a
- 36:22little bit of music. And I would always go to my mom
- 36:24and my grandma. They come up to the to the fence
- 36:27and lean over. I give my mom a kiss and, you
- 36:29know, talk some crap with my grandma and then I start getting
- 36:33to my, you know, game ritual stuff.
- 36:35But my mind was starting to work and I played that in my head
- 36:40every home game. So what you got to do as when
- 36:43you go on the road, you can still have rituals.
- 36:46They're just not going to be your same home rituals.
- 36:48My son is in sports now. He's playing basketball.
- 36:51The first game we went, I mean Halloween, we went and played
- 36:56some country, country white boys.
- 36:58That's about an hour and 15 minutes away in a place called
- 37:01Hartzell. And these little boys can bawl
- 37:03like they're just very fundamental.
- 37:05They country, so they lie out and they just in your face when
- 37:09they get a trap, they're yelling, screaming and they
- 37:11dominated us, you know? So my son asked me after the
- 37:15game. You know, my son's a pretty good
- 37:17athlete in everything he plays, you know, so he he's a pretty
- 37:20good basketball player. He's almost about 6 foot, you
- 37:24know, with his hair. He's about 6-1.
- 37:26So playing guard, he's left-handed, so he can do a lot
- 37:30of things that some of the other kids can't do.
- 37:32But he got held scoreless. I've never seen him be held
- 37:35scoreless. And he said I just, I was
- 37:37overwhelmed, you know, just having a real talk with him.
- 37:40He said the crowd was loud, the boys was loud, that coach was
- 37:43loud. You know, I feel like the refs
- 37:45weren't giving us calls. What can I do when I go on the
- 37:48road to be better? I said, well, you know what, I
- 37:50got to help you because you're reaching out to me, asking me.
- 37:53So I started sending them some little motivational stuff.
- 37:56Before the game, I sent him three points.
- 37:58Now because he's played two other home, two other away
- 38:02games. After that, I sent him three
- 38:04points, you know, kind of use the sandwich thing, I'd say.
- 38:07And when I say the sandwich method for him and I give him
- 38:11something. The kind that he needs to work
- 38:12on something he's great at and then another thing he needs to
- 38:15work on. So it's not like I'm just saying
- 38:17hey, you got to be at this so I may be like, OK, you got to
- 38:20rebound better this game. Last game you had six.
- 38:22I need you to try to get 10. You know, second point may be,
- 38:26hey, you scored great, just keep doing that And the third one may
- 38:30be, hey, you had five turnovers, you got to cut those down.
- 38:33So I say all that to say the coaches have to step in and get
- 38:37these kids ready for Rd. mentality.
- 38:41Whatever they They know those players better than we do.
- 38:44You got to know what those rituals are, that they need some
- 38:46of the things that you see them doing at home.
- 38:49You got to take that on the road.
- 38:51You got to tell them maybe if you see somebody eating Jolly
- 38:53Ranchers before the game, give them a Jolly Rancher like you
- 38:56got to dig into them. You got to get your best players
- 38:59moving. We can't wait till the
- 39:00second-half to get going. So that road mentality has to
- 39:03get better and it's it 100% starts with coaching.
- 39:06Players have to play and players have to be ready, but.
- 39:10Players are going to take on the mindset of their coaches.
- 39:13So these coaches have to get them ready and the coaches got
- 39:15to be ready too. You know that that they're,
- 39:17they're all new. They have to get ready.
- 39:20You know, you leaving, you getting on the road, you leaving
- 39:22your family, you being on a bus, you being on a plane.
- 39:25You know what I'm saying? You may didn't get to sit down
- 39:28and drink your bourbon that night, whatever the case may be,
- 39:32you got to get ready for this road game.
- 39:34So. I think I went on a little bit
- 39:36of a rant there, but I like that, I like that.
- 39:39And you're right, A. Lot, man.
- 39:40Brian you know, I mean, shit, you know, you've been, you've
- 39:43been involved in those rituals and road games and home games,
- 39:47so I'll toss it to you and let you talk a little bit.
- 39:49Yeah. You cannot approach a road game
- 39:51the same way you do a home game from a mentality standpoint,
- 39:55because when you're on the road, especially against the team that
- 39:59on paper is better than you, you've got to set the tone out
- 40:02the gate. And if you're not coming out
- 40:05there with that fire in your ass, ready to set that tone,
- 40:09it's going to be a long game. We've seen it at FSU.
- 40:13They jumped out to US 2022, nothing.
- 40:16We saw it at at Louisville where it was 14, nothing right out the
- 40:21gate, 14, three and a half time. You know, we were struggling to
- 40:26kind of hang on to that. And then Will was completely
- 40:28broken when we came out of Locker.
- 40:31We've got to find a way of preparing and getting the guys
- 40:35ready to go out the gate a lot better in these Rd. situations.
- 40:40The only one I've seen that's really come out with some fire
- 40:42was Marshall, and we crapped that away because we went ahead
- 40:46and went away from what was working in that game.
- 40:50But I I need to see it. We we we need to approach these
- 40:53Rd. games with that road mentality that Tally's talking
- 40:56about. You can't just have that same
- 40:59even keel mindset that you do with the home game.
- 41:01You've got to approach it with a different kind of fire because
- 41:04you got to bring a little bit more of your own juice because
- 41:07at home you the the fans are going to bring the juice.
- 41:10You're jacked up, you got family in town.
- 41:12All these things that you do is what you normally do when you
- 41:16hit the road. Every week is different, so you
- 41:19got to be able to bring your own juice in a different way.
- 41:22And I haven't seen us do that, at least not consistently yet.
- 41:25I'm hoping that we see it this week at BC Well.
- 41:28It's it's a big week at BC because we say what can we do
- 41:31better being before goals are still in front of us, the goals
- 41:35are still in front of us. I mean, one goal is getting more
- 41:38than three wins. We got there already.
- 41:40That seemed like a victory among itself to get to 4, but we still
- 41:43got that. But to me, what I bring on this,
- 41:46what we got to do, move better, being forward.
- 41:48That team can't show up on the fucking field again this year
- 41:51and I don't give a damn if it's at the road or home.
- 41:54Because if. That team shows up against any
- 41:55of these last three opponents. We are not winning those games,
- 41:58no. We.
- 41:59Look like shit. We look like we didn't want to
- 42:01play. Now.
- 42:03What I what I hope today helps us move better going forward.
- 42:08I don't know if y'all caught this in a prize interview,
- 42:12basically grants back it pretty much.
- 42:14He can play. But he said we're basically,
- 42:17this is Kyron's offense, this is Jones's offense.
- 42:21Basically, it's it. This is him.
- 42:24Maybe that's a shot to get the whole team ready.
- 42:27Maybe. Maybe something weird happened
- 42:28last week in practice with with Grant Wells back.
- 42:31We don't know that. So yeah, anything else for Y'all
- 42:34going forward that we got to do better.
- 42:37And I know we we said this a lot, but anything sticks out.
- 42:43I got to communicate in the Office of Line better because
- 42:45that that was a big problem. Louisville brought some
- 42:49different types of pressure that we hadn't seen a lot this year,
- 42:52and we got very flustered and it became a big problem.
- 42:56The biggest problem we've had holding up up front since the
- 43:01first month of the season. So that's got to get better.
- 43:07I'm awful. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 43:10If we're doing something on offense that's working, stop
- 43:13trying to fix it. Just just go with it.
- 43:16You know? We understand that Tootin is a
- 43:19hell of a running back. I know he may be nicked up
- 43:21sometimes. He's going to tell you when he
- 43:23can't go, but in that first, in that first half, he was moving
- 43:27the ball, you know, and some people say, well, we couldn't
- 43:30run inside. He was running where he wanted
- 43:31to. You know, he was coming off the
- 43:33tackle, he was coming between tackle and guard.
- 43:36He was beating people to the outside.
- 43:38Again, you can't have 60 yards in the first half.
- 43:41And then I think he may have ended the game with 50 yards,
- 43:44you know what I'm saying? He lost yards in the
- 43:45second-half, which is. I understand that that's
- 43:49adjustments. But when you have a player like
- 43:51that, you got to at least get him going, you know, So I had a
- 43:55basketball coach that used to always say weather to storm
- 43:57whenever we would play away. He coached much different than
- 44:02he did at home. You know that first quarter
- 44:04basketball is different than football, but he would always.
- 44:07You know, he'd let him go on a run, you know, because you can
- 44:10make up 10 points quick in basketball.
- 44:12You can make up 15 points quick in basketball.
- 44:14And he was just, he was a a real, you know, military guy,
- 44:17you know, always was, you know, you got to do it this way.
- 44:20You got to. But when we were on away games,
- 44:23he was real calm in that first quarter.
- 44:25You know, he he just, hey, y'all just weather the storm.
- 44:28They playing off emotions. It's all right.
- 44:30And then when that second quarter came, Coach D came out
- 44:33like he was. Get.
- 44:35Your ass in, Yeah, you know what I'm saying?
- 44:38He was a different coach because he understand now.
- 44:41The butterflies are gone. The team that I coach and we
- 44:45practice with every day should be showing up now.
- 44:48And if you ain't going to show up, you're going to come sit
- 44:50down. So there you.
- 44:51Go. I like that.
- 44:52Think moving better going forward.
- 44:54What you just said, Tally. If you don't want to show up, go
- 44:56sit down regardless, All right. Well, that wraps up that.
- 45:01Let's put that one in the trash can, burn it lot of gasoline.
- 45:04I don't want to see any remnants of that game ever again.
- 45:07Before we get in to know the enemy and the Boston College
- 45:10Eagles, we are going to take a quick pause from our digital
- 45:13partners and Main Street Pharmacy.
- 45:17I can probably save you a lot of money and I can take a lot
- 45:19better care of you. That's pretty much it.
- 45:22My name is Jeremy Counts and I'm a pharmacist.
- 45:24I own and operate Main Street Pharmacy here in downtown
- 45:26Blacksburg. My brother's a pharmacist.
- 45:28I'm a pharmacist. My uncle's a pharmacist.
- 45:30My dad's a pharmacist. I remember he would give me M
- 45:32and Ms. to count in little pill counters.
- 45:35This is something I've always done, and I'm just lucky that
- 45:38what I know so well is something that I can do and feel good
- 45:41about it and get back to people. Pharmacies are your frontline
- 45:44defense. Pharmacy's job is to make sure
- 45:47you're getting optimal care for the lowest price possible.
- 45:49Also, we take the pressure off of emergency rooms.
- 45:52I'll tell people immediately when they need to go to the
- 45:54doctor, or I'll tell them if they just need a cream over the
- 45:56counter. If there's something that isn't
- 45:58commercially available, if it's something that's not available
- 46:01in a certain strength or a certain form or anything like
- 46:04that, we'll make it tailor made medications.
- 46:06Some of those options save people a lot of money.
- 46:08What motivates me? I get to take care of people and
- 46:10live in Blacksburg. That's all neat.
- 46:15As we take a quick break. We'd like to tell you about
- 46:17getting your free website report from our digital partner,
- 46:20Grassroots Digital Marketing Studio.
- 46:22They'll tell you how your website ranks on Google onsite
- 46:24SEO and social media. No commitment to buy anything.
- 46:27You can get your free report by visiting grassroots
- 46:30digitalstudio.com/free Dash website Dash Report.
- 46:35Now back to the episode all. Right, and we are back.
- 46:39Know the enemy? Boston College Eagles.
- 46:42As always, we start with the offense 1st.
- 46:44And Brian? Let's talk about the offense ran
- 46:47by Steve. How about I'm pronouncing his
- 46:49name right, Y'all know me and that Shaminko Jimko.
- 46:53What are they doing up there? Yeah man we got a got another
- 46:58tight end turn quarterback coach with a dual threat transfer
- 47:03quarterback. So little bit of a similarity in
- 47:07in that regard this this, this one happened to have coached
- 47:11quarterbacks before in a limited role.
- 47:15But yeah, it's really interesting.
- 47:18This is the second year as the quarterback coach.
- 47:20First year OC, we got a power spread option.
- 47:27Pass game is really predicated on the success of that play
- 47:30action and run threat. So if they're not running the
- 47:32ball effectively, they're not going to really be able to throw
- 47:35the ball very much. Very similar in that regard to
- 47:38what we saw coming out of coming out of Syracuse.
- 47:42They really have to get the run game going if they're going to
- 47:44have any success offensively. Yep.
- 47:47Hey, Tally, anything you notice? I know you watched a little bit
- 47:49of that Syracuse game on Friday. Anything you noticed there with
- 47:52this offense that stuck out to you?
- 47:55That offense is going to run with the quarterback.
- 47:57I know you're going to talk about him a little bit, but the
- 48:00offense doesn't scare me at all. They've got their typical Boston
- 48:06College. They're going to have some big
- 48:07lineman, they're going to be white and they're going to be
- 48:10technical and they're going to move some people.
- 48:13And you got a quarterback now with them that's can run.
- 48:17And then they going to have some running backs with some crazy
- 48:20names that look like they may be from Louisiana or something, but
- 48:23they're going to be. Big and they're going to be
- 48:25strong and they going to get 3 yards to carry like it's the
- 48:30typical Boston College. The only thing that I didn't see
- 48:33from them is the fucking cowboy call a tight end that they
- 48:37normally have there. You go all.
- 48:41Right. Well, let's talk about that
- 48:43quarterback, that is. That's the only thing that I
- 48:46haven't seen from that offense this year.
- 48:49Well, let's talk about Thomas Castellanos.
- 48:52He is from Ware County Down in Waycross, GA.
- 48:55He was a transfer from UCF when he first came out back in the
- 49:01year of 2022, was a very high three star and a top 600 player,
- 49:08so a solid player to go to UCF. Stay there a year, then transfer
- 49:12it up. And this year, Brian, you're
- 49:14going to talk about what he does.
- 49:15But just look at the numbers here.
- 49:17You know, 760 yards rushing, 5 point to a carry.
- 49:21He has 10 touchdowns. Knowing where they score, that
- 49:25is a lot. And as far as passing the ball,
- 49:29not terrible, just slightly under 58 percent. 1700 yards, 7
- 49:36per attempt, 12 touchdowns, 7 interceptions.
- 49:41And Brian, what what are you, what are you seeing?
- 49:45From it because Tally kind of said, I think your big lead
- 49:47point here. Yeah man, the offense goes as he
- 49:50goes. If he doesn't have a good game,
- 49:52they're not going to have a good game.
- 49:54He is their primary rushing threat.
- 49:56He leads the team in yards rushing.
- 49:58He's got a good arm that can make all the throws, but he's
- 50:01mostly likes to live in that that short intermediate range.
- 50:06He'll take a shot here and there, but that's not his bread
- 50:08and butter. And this is the guy that will
- 50:10throw some picks, man. He's like, I think 13 and seven
- 50:14touchdown, 12 and 712 and seven touchdown interception.
- 50:17So he'll throw some picks. Again, everything that they do
- 50:22is predicated on running the football and he will do most of
- 50:24that. When he runs that ball, he's
- 50:27carrying it like a loaf of bread.
- 50:30Somebody need to punch it out, get him on the ground, get the
- 50:34ball on the ground. That's, that's that's what you
- 50:36got to do to win. We going to make a note of that
- 50:38now real quick like he's sitting up he's got 700 plus yards so
- 50:42he's averaging roughly about 80 a game.
- 50:46This team is a top ten rushing team.
- 50:47They are averaging 211 a game. And you know let's talk about,
- 50:52let's skip and go back to the wide receiving of Sagna Rumble.
- 50:56Let's talk about Kyle Robichaux Tally making fun of him over
- 51:00here Tally you know why he's got a a southern name.
- 51:03He's from Phoenix City, Alabama. I didn't know that he.
- 51:06Is from Phoenix City, Alabama. Did he go to Central?
- 51:10Huh. What high school did he go to?
- 51:11Did he go to Central Glenwood? OK, that ain't a powerhouse, but
- 51:15OK, powerhouse. No, he started at Western
- 51:17Kentucky. He was not ranked when he came
- 51:19out in 2021, got into Portal ranked in 88 and had a good.
- 51:25He's having a really good season so far up there with over 560
- 51:30yards rushing, 6 touchdowns. Add another 80 plus in the
- 51:36receiving game. So, Brian, what do you see from
- 51:41rubbish Shaw on tape? I mean, he's a running back with
- 51:46good vision. He's kind of that typical Boston
- 51:48College running back. Like like Tally was mentioning.
- 51:50Man, he's a guy that runs hard, finishes hard.
- 51:54He doesn't really have elite breakaway speed, but that vision
- 51:58kind of between the tackles allows him to occasionally bust
- 52:01a big run just on that alone. Break some tackles, Not a huge
- 52:06tackle breaker, but more of a guy that will, you know, drag
- 52:09guys for a few extra yards, find the right right gap and kind of
- 52:13run through an arm tackle. They use him some of the screen
- 52:17and check down game. Not a huge threat here though.
- 52:21And you know he's got a a a back mate there with Garwo.
- 52:24I know, we haven't seen a bunch of him either, that, yeah,
- 52:29exactly. He's been banged up.
- 52:30So Robichaud has been getting most of the run here lately, and
- 52:34it's taken advantage of that put out a pretty good campaign so
- 52:36far. Yeah, and again, you kind of
- 52:41start adding it up. It's like it's really it's him
- 52:44and it's it's Castellanos running the ball.
- 52:48It. Really is their account for, you
- 52:50know, close to 1300 yards out of the 1800 plus they've got, I
- 52:55mean we see that. It's like OK.
- 52:57Don't let them beat you, but don't let this guy catching the
- 53:01ball beat you. And that's going to be Lewis
- 53:03Bond. Lewis Bond when he came out in
- 53:082021 out of Kenwood Academy in Chicago, IL.
- 53:12An 86 ranked player, so kind of a mid ranked player there, but
- 53:16having a hell of a season this year.
- 53:18Already 35 receptions, 485 yards, 5 touchdowns.
- 53:25This has really been his first year where he has been a primary
- 53:27wide receiver up there and thank God that man isn't here anymore.
- 53:33What? Should we need Robbie?
- 53:34You shouldn't even brought his name up.
- 53:36I'm. Glad he did, because this thing
- 53:37we ain't got to talk about Zay Flowers this year.
- 53:40Right. He got to talk about Zay
- 53:42flowers. Ravens.
- 53:43Looking good, by the way. Oh.
- 53:45Yeah, yeah, they squirrel storm. They they Since we stole one
- 53:50from them, they've looked fucking unstoppable.
- 53:53There you go. But let's talk about Lewis Bond
- 53:56because he is the lead, the team leader in receptions and yards.
- 54:01Brian, what is he bringing to the table?
- 54:04That it does have to make up for what Zay Jones did for years
- 54:07there. Yeah, he's he's more of a kind
- 54:10of a shifty burner than he is a stick mover.
- 54:13We've seen him hit the big one a couple times this year.
- 54:16I think he had one touchdown for 42 yards or or long for 42
- 54:19yards. I don't know if it turned into a
- 54:20touchdown or not, but they'll move him around a lot in the
- 54:23formation. Works mostly at X and out of the
- 54:26slot, but he's a guy that can beat you deep.
- 54:30They like him on the intermediate stuff, some of the
- 54:32stuff over the middle, good, good balance of speed and
- 54:35quickness. So he's definitely one that you
- 54:37got to watch out for when they do get the passing game going.
- 54:40And a lot, a lot of times they like to take those, those
- 54:43intermediate and deep shots off that play action, and if they're
- 54:45running effectively, that becomes more effective in the
- 54:48passing game as well all. Righty.
- 54:51Brian, did anybody else receiver wide jump out to you?
- 54:54Because when I was just doing the data dives, nothing.
- 54:57I mean, you know, we talked about excuse.
- 55:01Me that We talked about him having 1700 yards and you're
- 55:05talking about just over 1/4. That's to Lewis.
- 55:08He's only completed 140 passes. That's a quarter to passes going
- 55:12to Lewis Pond too. Did anybody else just jump out
- 55:15on tape or yeah, #0 Jayden Williams, he's kind of more of
- 55:20their stick mover. He's got to look out.
- 55:23He's a, he's a bigger guy. You know, Lewis Bond is kind of
- 55:28their burner. He's a smaller 58188 guy.
- 55:32James Kind of That bigger stick moving red zone threat all.
- 55:36Right, we'll make a note of Jayden Williams.
- 55:39Now let's just talk about the offensive line here, Brian,
- 55:42because Tally said. It reminds them of an old school
- 55:45Boston, Boston College offensive line where the last few years,
- 55:50yeah, that that offensive line was trouble.
- 55:53Is it better than it was last year?
- 55:57Better, especially run blocking, they they do a good job of
- 56:02communicating and getting to the second level.
- 56:04I I call them mid in terms of pass pro, they don't really give
- 56:07up a ton of sacks, but most of that's a product of the
- 56:10quarterback #1 having a high, not having a high percentage of
- 56:15drop backs versus stuff going on, play action numbers two,
- 56:20just being able to escape the pressure with his legs.
- 56:22So those two factors are really limiting the sack count.
- 56:27But like I said, they're not, I wouldn't call them a very good
- 56:30pass pro team. They're they're a very average
- 56:32to slightly below average pass pro, but their run blocking is
- 56:36kind of, I'd say higher tier. They're they're not as elite as
- 56:39the yardage that they're putting out right now, but most of that
- 56:41is a product of Castellanos being able to take off and make
- 56:44some big plays with his legs. Well, be realistic with me here,
- 56:47Brian, when it comes to the you talked about the sacks allowed,
- 56:52were there times when you were watching this tape, It was that
- 56:55should be a sack, that should be a sack, that should be a sack.
- 56:59And he just wiggled his way out. He did that in the Syracuse
- 57:03game. There's a bunch of those
- 57:05moments, yeah. There's a bunch of those
- 57:07moments. And like I said, they don't call
- 57:09straight drops a lot either. So you know when they do he he
- 57:15does have the ability to skate, but a lot of times they're
- 57:17calling those those pass plays off of that play action.
- 57:19So he's getting a little bit of a of a cushion there with that
- 57:22run action. All right.
- 57:24Good deal. Again, just trying to paint a
- 57:26picture of what they may be doing and it sounds like to me
- 57:30that that run game we you better get back.
- 57:33To the Pit game through the Syracuse game and the run
- 57:36defense this week. Like I said, they they won't hit
- 57:38home runs on you, but it could look like Louisville and a bunch
- 57:42of gashes all game if we don't sure that thing up and tackle
- 57:46better, well be. Realistic with me though, Do
- 57:48they have the offensive power power to get to 30 points?
- 57:51No, OK. All right.
- 57:55That's. I mean, you know, you got to,
- 57:57you got to find wins, right? I don't want to talk too much.
- 58:00I don't want to talk too much because I.
- 58:02I know how people was last week when you start.
- 58:07Uh, Oh no. We did not make his microphone
- 58:10go to Technical Difficulties. Valley, get back in here.
- 58:14Sorry, I left y'all hanging. Yes, repeat what you said.
- 58:17We all so. They're running back's supposed
- 58:19to be banged up, overshot supposed to be banged up.
- 58:21That's. What they saying?
- 58:23They're saying he's supposed to be banged up.
- 58:25So we don't know. I mean, I know that.
- 58:28Well, hold on. So we need to be Garo hadn't
- 58:34played Alex Broom. Y'all see your bed broom, Alex
- 58:39Broom number #20. Write that number down because
- 58:46no one that's Cali will tell you.
- 58:48No one outlook the guy who's not carrying the ball much.
- 58:50Watch for Cameron Barfield too. Cameron, Barfield and Broom all
- 58:55right. Listen, you know what?
- 58:57And I think you wonder how much that goes into mentality too.
- 59:00Hey, they might have guys banged up and then it's like, no,
- 59:03everybody played with one cap. All right, I want to flip over
- 59:06to the defensive side of the ball boys led by Sean Duggan and
- 59:10Arzir Abdul Rahim. They are Co defensive
- 59:13coordinator unit up at Boston College and so far this year,
- 59:17solid overall numbers. For their total defense, they
- 59:22ranked 46th. Giving up about 350 yards a
- 59:25game, definitely giving up. Better against the past than the
- 59:31run. So Brian, what are you seeing
- 59:33from this defense? Yeah they there there are four,
- 59:37three they'll blitz some what you see from a down line
- 59:43perspective. Usually they'll have one guy
- 59:45standing up, sometimes both DN standing up.
- 59:49They'll they'll blitz pretty regularly, but they usually do
- 59:53it on more obvious downs. They're not bringing different
- 59:56pressures, varied pressures on 1st and 2nd very often.
- 59:59It's usually in those expected passing situations and it's a
- 1:00:03lot of cover 3, cover one, mixed in a little cover 6.
- 1:00:07So you're going to see those type of coverages pretty
- 1:00:08consistently from this team. Solid defense.
- 1:00:12Nothing elite about them, but they're very solid.
- 1:00:16Kind of at, especially in their front 7.
- 1:00:21All righty and no. Normally we'll start with a
- 1:00:23linebacker or we'll start with a defensive lineman.
- 1:00:26But today, Brian, I wanted to start out with one of the
- 1:00:29defensive backs because Elijah Jones is one of the country
- 1:00:34leaders in interceptions. He's got 5, which is I think
- 1:00:38number six in the country, tied for six in the country because
- 1:00:42there's a bunch of guys at 5 and there's only two guys ahead of
- 1:00:44that group with a nine and seven.
- 1:00:47He's got 25 tackles this year, so obviously seems like a pretty
- 1:00:51willing guy. He's forced to fumble 8 past
- 1:00:54deflections for Elijah Jones and just a little background on him.
- 1:01:00Not heavily recruited out of high school, not heavily
- 1:01:03recruited at all out of high school.
- 1:01:05Had offers like UMass, Connecticut, Coastal Carolina
- 1:01:08from the state of New York, ranked as an 86 in the class of
- 1:01:112018. So he's been around a while.
- 1:01:14And Brian? Why does he have so many picks?
- 1:01:19Because he's a ball hawk, he's their boundary corner shout out
- 1:01:24and and he's he's a ball hawk man.
- 1:01:26He's really able to hold up well in zone.
- 1:01:29He's also active in their run game, so he'll come up, make
- 1:01:31some tackles there as well. Really thrives in man coverage
- 1:01:35though and the really the only weakness he has is that he can't
- 1:01:39get fooled with a double move. So if you throw that on him,
- 1:01:41sometimes you can get guys open. Down the field for a big play
- 1:01:45but yeah he he's a guy that whether it's man or zone he can
- 1:01:51make a make an interception happen.
- 1:01:52He's a he's definitely a playmaker and a ball hog and you
- 1:01:55know we we LED with the with the corner back here number one he's
- 1:01:59a boundary corner #2. I mean this.
- 1:02:01Y'all this is our 4th year doing this podcast.
- 1:02:03Y'all didn't need to hear about fucking Vinnie De Palma one more
- 1:02:06fucking time. Or there was one other one on
- 1:02:09there. Who was it?
- 1:02:10Hold on, Cam Arnold. Cam Arnold also graced it twice.
- 1:02:16Cam Arnold graced it twice. So I had to mix that up and pull
- 1:02:19somebody else. And then again, you see a guy
- 1:02:21that has five interceptions and you look at where he ranks like
- 1:02:24you've got to go. Look at him.
- 1:02:26That's one. As soon as I saw the numbers,
- 1:02:27I'm like, I don't care if he's got like 4 in one game or three
- 1:02:30in one game. That guy's doing something right
- 1:02:33in that case. Yeah, two against Georgia Tech
- 1:02:35and he had two against Syracuse. And Syracuse's quarterback.
- 1:02:39So Syracuse's quarterback was just throwing the ball to him.
- 1:02:41So the. First one was awful.
- 1:02:45He's the worst. Quarterback I ever watched play
- 1:02:47he. Recognized the one-on-one
- 1:02:48coverage, but so Jones had inside position and he just.
- 1:02:53He threw it almost to the damn middle of the field, like he
- 1:02:55gave his receivers zero chance to get there.
- 1:02:58And you know what's crazy is because, and I know we're
- 1:03:00getting off a little bit, but Syracuse's backup quarterback
- 1:03:05was like a four-star. Maybe like a 92 guy coming out
- 1:03:09of high school went to Florida transferred from Florida to
- 1:03:12Syracuse. Horrible.
- 1:03:15Maybe it was one game, but it was he was the worst game that
- 1:03:20I've it looks. Like dog shit?
- 1:03:22Oh my. I think he threw 4 picks.
- 1:03:24He may have threw 5. So what are you telling me
- 1:03:27before they got that confidence really high against a really bad
- 1:03:31quarterback? Yeah.
- 1:03:32Yeah, I mean, we knocked. We knocked straight out so
- 1:03:37straighter didn't play. We messed him up.
- 1:03:39Yeah, he didn't play. And that.
- 1:03:41That backup quarterback didn't do them no justice.
- 1:03:44Shit. And.
- 1:03:46And and most of the the The bad thing is I watched the end of
- 1:03:49that game as shitty as Syracuse played.
- 1:03:52That's what I was just like, hide the game.
- 1:03:55How? The hell you can force 4
- 1:03:57turnovers. You play against the terrible
- 1:03:59backup and you can't win by more than seven and I.
- 1:04:02See, I think Robichaud got hurt. Whenever he got killed by that,
- 1:04:07either the safety or the outside linebacker when he got hit and
- 1:04:12then they looked at it for targeted, but he fumble the
- 1:04:14ball. I think that's when he got when
- 1:04:17he got banged up. But again, that's just me
- 1:04:21digging and looking at stuff. We ain't going to talk about it
- 1:04:24till they come on the field. And hell, sometimes it don't
- 1:04:27matter with Virginia Tech like you said.
- 1:04:28I remember fucking playing Georgia Tech when they had that
- 1:04:32stupid ass offense. They bring somebody out of the
- 1:04:34stands and put a jersey on them. They rush for two on the yards.
- 1:04:38So. If they could run, they were
- 1:04:40going to run against us. They're going to run against us.
- 1:04:44All right, let's talk about a couple of them.
- 1:04:45Like I said, we're we're avoiding the linebacker room
- 1:04:47because go look at the old episodes.
- 1:04:49Brown will give you a little breakdown on De Palma and
- 1:04:51Arnold, who are two of their top linebackers.
- 1:04:53Let's talk about George Rooks though.
- 1:04:55Brian and I want to talk about George Brooks was.
- 1:04:57George Brooks was a pretty highly recruited guy when he
- 1:05:00come in, Came out of high school a composite 4 star, a composite
- 1:05:04top 200 or top 300 player. He originally committed to
- 1:05:08Michigan, then transferred to Boston College from there.
- 1:05:13And even when he transferred, he was still considered a pretty
- 1:05:16high prospect, still ranked at an 87 and so far this year, not
- 1:05:21having great numbers. But again, you start doing a
- 1:05:24little reading and it's like, OK, he's kind of a key part of
- 1:05:27this offense because all he's got this year's 22 tackles, sack
- 1:05:31and a half, 1/4 fumble. But Brian, what is he doing
- 1:05:35that? That really caught our eye while
- 1:05:38we want to talk about him. Active and strong hands, this
- 1:05:42guy is. He pops on the film as soon as
- 1:05:46if you if you're looking at technique he just pops right
- 1:05:49away like everything he does is very sound, does a great job
- 1:05:54penetrating the line of scrimmage.
- 1:05:56Doesn't get moved in the double team.
- 1:05:58Knows those when to get down crawl through the double team.
- 1:06:02I mean, he does everything very well and he's deceptively quick,
- 1:06:07so sometimes, you know, if you're not communicating
- 1:06:09properly, he'll slip in the backfield, can make a play
- 1:06:12there, tackle for loss. I'd say he's better against the
- 1:06:15run than he's not so much of A pass rusher, but he will impact
- 1:06:19there as well. But he's definitely a guy that
- 1:06:22you have to account for every damn time you line up because he
- 1:06:26will make some plays. Well, first of all Robbie had a
- 1:06:30had a chime in real quick on that.
- 1:06:34So they forced 6 turnovers and still lost.
- 1:06:37That's a bad way to go out, man. That's.
- 1:06:39Tough. That hurts the heart.
- 1:06:41Man, that does hurt the heart. Man So as good as Rooks is
- 1:06:44because Rooks is on the inside, he is AD tackle right?
- 1:06:47Is he? Is he three primary or does he
- 1:06:49kind of move around a little bit?
- 1:06:50He moves. Around, but he's primarily 3,
- 1:06:52OK. So we could see him all over the
- 1:06:54inside of the line, which is very interesting to see.
- 1:06:57I go from there and I go to the one of the guys on the outside
- 1:07:01here and that is Donovan Izaruku.
- 1:07:05Yep, I butchered that close. Enough.
- 1:07:07I apologize. Nothing about it I wouldn't
- 1:07:09even. Try it.
- 1:07:09You wouldn't even try. 39 tackles so far, 2 sacks, 5
- 1:07:14tackles for loss, force, fumble, pass deflection.
- 1:07:17So obviously every time I see a defensive line with a pass
- 1:07:20deflection that tells me they get their hands up.
- 1:07:22I hate that so much. Hate it so much unless we're
- 1:07:24doing it. But again, a very, very under
- 1:07:28recruited guy out of, you know, out of high school in the class
- 1:07:32of 21 like Bucknell, Columbia, Elon, Fordham, Harvard, Holy
- 1:07:37Cross, Holy Cross, who almost beat BC just a few weeks ago.
- 1:07:43Kidd is from the state of New Jersey, a 83 when he came out.
- 1:07:49And Brian, he's coming off the edge.
- 1:07:53Are you going to be worried if he's lined up to the right side
- 1:07:56of our line? I mean, he's got pretty good
- 1:07:59speed. He's not necessarily your your
- 1:08:01prototypical pass rusher, but I like his speed.
- 1:08:05It's really more. He's got great instincts in the
- 1:08:07running game, you know, he knows where to be.
- 1:08:11He kind of gets a good feel of what the offensive line is
- 1:08:14trying to do and how he can kind of get by.
- 1:08:16He's really not shedding a lot of blocks.
- 1:08:19He's not. He's he's not using his hands in
- 1:08:21the same way that Rooks is, but he's just really good at.
- 1:08:27Kind of avoiding those blocks, using his instincts, getting in
- 1:08:29position where you can get those tackles, those tackles for loss
- 1:08:32and things like that. So that that's really his bread
- 1:08:34and butter. He's not a good pass rusher,
- 1:08:38he's just average, but but he is an impact player in the running
- 1:08:43game, so that's something that we have to pay attention to.
- 1:08:46All right. So let's talk about the Hokie
- 1:08:50keys, because we got quite a few things here.
- 1:08:52And Tally, I'm going to let you lead it off here.
- 1:08:55What's going to be your big key this week for the Hokies?
- 1:09:00Kind of what we talked about earlier, man.
- 1:09:02I mean, we just need to see the team that we've been seeing at
- 1:09:05home, you know, we need to go in, listen to Baja, man, before
- 1:09:09the game. Fucking let the dogs out, you
- 1:09:12know? Come on now, we got to go in
- 1:09:15here and we got to play. There's nothing to hold back
- 1:09:18for. There's nothing that we need to
- 1:09:20be thinking about. You know, we keep talking one
- 1:09:22and O. Don't worry about the next game.
- 1:09:25Go win this game. This is the game.
- 1:09:28There's no more games. Go win this one.
- 1:09:31Throw everything. You got to throw at it.
- 1:09:33Don't hold anything back. Don't go in there with that
- 1:09:36pussyfooting around letting people push you around.
- 1:09:39If they get in your face, you get back in their face.
- 1:09:41I mean, go play football, go play with genie, Tech football,
- 1:09:45all of the stuff that we had seen us doing.
- 1:09:47Just go do that. Build on that.
- 1:09:50All right. Brian, what's some of the stuff
- 1:09:52you've got? Counter punch quickly.
- 1:09:56Because if we don't come out and we're not let the dogs out the
- 1:09:59gate there, as Tally mentioned, we need to make sure that what
- 1:10:05if our script isn't working, if if we go out there and we have a
- 1:10:10bad offensive series or we go out there and we let them, you
- 1:10:13know, run 12 plays and get a touchdown ball up the game plan,
- 1:10:17get to something different quicker.
- 1:10:19Let's figure it out. Within one or two drives instead
- 1:10:23of four to five drives or six or seven drives, let's figure out
- 1:10:26what they're doing. Let's be quicker with those
- 1:10:28adjustments and let's not let them dictate the terms that
- 1:10:34whole first, second quarter. At some point we need to start
- 1:10:37dictating the terms on the road and make them have to play our
- 1:10:41game A. 100 percent. I've got AI.
- 1:10:45Got a couple here if y'all want to chime in with a couple I
- 1:10:47wrote down. I think y'all probably feel
- 1:10:49them. My big one is do not give up
- 1:10:52sacks at his team. Do not, I swear to God if they
- 1:10:56have more than one. Heck if I don't get mad at one.
- 1:11:00This team has 11 sacks all year, APR has 9.
- 1:11:05By himself. They are 123rd in the country.
- 1:11:08Do not give up fucking sacks. And y'all we.
- 1:11:12We see how it always turns our team up.
- 1:11:14My second big one, what we did at Syracuse, and I know
- 1:11:18Castellanos is a different runner.
- 1:11:20Clog the escape lanes. Garrett Schrader didn't know
- 1:11:23what to do when he didn't have an escape lane.
- 1:11:26Castellanos is going to do the same thing.
- 1:11:27We get those escape lanes and he's chucking the ball.
- 1:11:29It's not going to be one, it's not going to be two.
- 1:11:31He's going to throw 3 picks. Anything else?
- 1:11:34Y'all got no. I was.
- 1:11:36I mean, you hit it perfect, man. When you talk about the not
- 1:11:40giving up sacks and and like Brian said earlier, their
- 1:11:43quarterback is there what that offense is going to run through.
- 1:11:47You know, as he goes, they go clog those lanes up.
- 1:11:50Let's go in here, play Virginia Tech football, let's get back
- 1:11:53home with a win. Yep.
- 1:11:54And I I'll chime in the last one.
- 1:11:56Get them behind the six man. Let's get some tackles for loss.
- 1:11:59Let's get them. And down in distances where
- 1:12:02Castellanos has to be a drop back quarterback and not a dual
- 1:12:06threat running quarterback with the option off that play action.
- 1:12:11If we can get them in obvious passing situations, we can tee
- 1:12:14off, we can stay in those rush lanes, we can get them off the
- 1:12:17field in the one point what Alex said.
- 1:12:19With those tackle for losses, when you get them three yards
- 1:12:21and you slam behind a lot of scrimmage and let them know
- 1:12:24about it, yeah. Don't help them up, let them
- 1:12:26know about. Don't help them up, walk away
- 1:12:28and well, don't get the penalty because y'all know we'll scream
- 1:12:31at somebody up there. Don't.
- 1:12:32Stand over them. We've already had one.
- 1:12:34Don't do that. Just walk away and shake your
- 1:12:36head and be like, all right, so let's move on.
- 1:12:41We got our predictions. We got big screeners presented
- 1:12:43by prize picks, prize picks, daily fantasy app where you make
- 1:12:47entries based on player projected outcomes.
- 1:12:50I actually looked at some basketball this week, got out
- 1:12:53Jason Long. I wonder how much he'll do.
- 1:12:57And I looked at assists because Ona tomorrow night, Boston and
- 1:13:01Phillies playing. And so I'm looking over here.
- 1:13:04They got Jason Tatum at 4 assists.
- 1:13:06He ain't getting 4 assists. That man trying to go for 40
- 1:13:08tomorrow night. And it was one more I got here,
- 1:13:11my second one. Where'd it go?
- 1:13:13Where'd it go? Oh, shoot.
- 1:13:16Where'd he go? I'm mad about this.
- 1:13:17It was a one. I was like, that's the one I'm
- 1:13:19going to bet on. I'm effort in here.
- 1:13:21Hold on, Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 1:13:26I'm sorry y'all this. Really.
- 1:13:28I should have clicked on both. And I didn't click on the second
- 1:13:31one here. Oh, Russell Westbrook.
- 1:13:38They're playing Brooklyn 5 assists.
- 1:13:39No, that man's going for at least eight tomorrow night in
- 1:13:42Brooklyn. So over Russell Westbrook
- 1:13:45assists Under Jason Tatum assists with prize picks.
- 1:13:49Our sponsor for this segment will match any up, will match
- 1:13:53any deposit up to $100 when you you'd BC picks prize code QR
- 1:13:58code. I'll let Brian pull it up here.
- 1:14:00Yeah, we're we're sharing it now here.
- 1:14:03Right there. Easy to go.
- 1:14:05All right. I didn't get a chance to
- 1:14:07calculate last week. It won't.
- 1:14:09Good because Oklahoma lost. We all picked Oklahoma and they
- 1:14:13had points. Well, I think we all got
- 1:14:15Washington, right. It was not pretty.
- 1:14:18It was not pretty. You should have faded the
- 1:14:19Boundary Corner podcast last week and I don't know about this
- 1:14:23week. Let's talk about the Let's talk
- 1:14:27about this game boys. Brian, I'll let you lead it off
- 1:14:29here how you feel as we Whoa, I got small.
- 1:14:32I did get small. How you feeling, by the way, if
- 1:14:36y'all haven't been paying attention out there.
- 1:14:38This line started at 4 1/2 two days ago.
- 1:14:41It has sworn 6 points in two days.
- 1:14:45I've never seen anything like that.
- 1:14:48Yeah, you don't see Lions swing six points.
- 1:14:50You've seen they got. Some they got some people hurt,
- 1:14:53man. They got to have some people
- 1:14:55hurt. Robichaud must not be going,
- 1:14:57man. Yeah, I should see.
- 1:14:59Well, again, this is just board talk.
- 1:15:01This is just board talk. That's saying Robichaud and
- 1:15:04brooms hurt. All right, we'll see.
- 1:15:06All right, Brian, what's your prediction for this game?
- 1:15:12I got the Hokies. I got the Hokies winning.
- 1:15:17This is, this is the game where we got a nut up or shut up
- 1:15:19because, you know, at some point.
- 1:15:23This is the type of team that you got to go out there and beat
- 1:15:25every time you play them. I got the Hokies winning 2717.
- 1:15:30All righty, I'm going to go next and let let let Tally close out.
- 1:15:33What are you doing with that screen, man?
- 1:15:34You were messing me up. If I was drunk, I'd be all.
- 1:15:37Screwed up. We're good.
- 1:15:38Now it's settled. It's settled.
- 1:15:40I don't know what the hell was going on, but we're good now.
- 1:15:42All right. So Brian, I like to nut up or
- 1:15:45shut up. That's a great one here.
- 1:15:47And this is truly one of the mid ACC teams we've beaten.
- 1:15:50The bad we have, we've been three of the bad, this is truly
- 1:15:54one of them is they're three and two.
- 1:15:56There's six and three overall. They lost in Northern Illinois.
- 1:15:59They should have lost the Holy Cross.
- 1:16:02I would like to see us really blow them out.
- 1:16:04I don't think we quite blow them out, but I think we win this
- 1:16:07game. I think at the fourth quarter
- 1:16:10Tally's able to call us and breathe.
- 1:16:12Tech 28, Boston College 16. Tally, what are you thinking?
- 1:16:18You know what, man? Starting it out, I said.
- 1:16:22We're going to beat them by 14 points.
- 1:16:23We're going to go up there. You know, maybe it was good for
- 1:16:26us to get our heads beat in so we would have a little bit of
- 1:16:29different mindset going up there.
- 1:16:30We're going to go up there and we're going to show them who's
- 1:16:33boss. I ain't going to say that
- 1:16:34though. Right here on the BCP big screen
- 1:16:38is, I'm going to say, Boston College.
- 1:16:40I. Hope they put I hope they put my
- 1:16:42face up in the locker room and say this motherfucker picks us
- 1:16:45to lose. I'm picking Boston College to
- 1:16:47win. I hope I'm bullet bulletin board
- 1:16:49material and. Everybody jumps on me on Twitter
- 1:16:53because I'm picking Boston College, but I'm picking Boston
- 1:16:55College. You know why?
- 1:16:57Because I can't. I've seen us get our fucking ass
- 1:16:59kicked last week and I don't think nobody was mad about it.
- 1:17:02So coaching staff, prove me wrong.
- 1:17:06Go up there and show people you can run on the road.
- 1:17:08Go up there and show people you got some nuts.
- 1:17:11There you go. All righty.
- 1:17:13I don't know if you got something from Shelton.
- 1:17:16I know he's been, he said. Tech.
- 1:17:18You got tech. All right.
- 1:17:20No score prediction? No score prediction, just tech.
- 1:17:24Shelton also was out in the Midwest for the better part of
- 1:17:28this weekend, so it's luckily we were able to get in touch with
- 1:17:31him at all. Shelton has been went from under
- 1:17:33the weather to on the road in Tulsa, so oh.
- 1:17:36Yeah, he moving it. He moving and grooving.
- 1:17:38All righty, let's roll it up here and let's get to.
- 1:17:43Our big screeners. Lots of fun games this weekend.
- 1:17:45Lots of implication, by the way. Y'all I know I did.
- 1:17:50I did not get a chance to see the playoff picture come out
- 1:17:52tonight. Y'all imagine a year from now.
- 1:17:54And just, I mean, y'all, we hope the Hokies are in these
- 1:17:58conversations next year. But legitimately, I think
- 1:18:01anybody with a number, even 20, like early 20s, if they went out
- 1:18:09next year, you got a shot to go play for a national title.
- 1:18:13And. Everybody's sitting here.
- 1:18:14It's like this isn't going to help the sport.
- 1:18:17It's watering down the sport. Brian, what's the what's the
- 1:18:21Line from Shawshank Redemption? Hope man.
- 1:18:25Hope it's a dangerous thing and what it's going to do is keep us
- 1:18:28watching the TV closer. But let's start Ole Miss,
- 1:18:31Georgia. This is Tally's big Screener of
- 1:18:34the Week Georgia laying 10 1/2. What are we thinking, Tally?
- 1:18:41I think I'm going to go to Georgia, man.
- 1:18:43You know, I I kept leaning towards going Ole Miss because I
- 1:18:46do like some of the stuff that Lane Kiffin does.
- 1:18:49But I just think Georgia, I don't think Georgia's going to
- 1:18:52get really tested into the SEC game.
- 1:18:55The SEC Championship, excuse me, SEC Championship is where I
- 1:18:58think they may falter. I think they're going to take
- 1:19:01this game. All righty.
- 1:19:06Shelton rode right with you, Tally E rode with you and I'm
- 1:19:09riding against Brian, you with her against I'm.
- 1:19:14Going the other way as well, this game is going to come down
- 1:19:16to the wire. Lane's got them playing pretty
- 1:19:20good. I feel like they're in This game
- 1:19:21is going to be like a six or seven point victory for Georgia,
- 1:19:25but Olvis is going to give them all they want.
- 1:19:28I'm, I'm with Brian on this. I think Olmus is going to give
- 1:19:30them all they want. Missouri was able to move the
- 1:19:33ball on them and I know that's a chance for Georgia to fix it,
- 1:19:36but Lane's a mastermind at that. Now they going to give up some
- 1:19:40points, but I think Brian it's like a six or seven point game,
- 1:19:4310 1/2 too much to lay here. All righty, this is my big
- 1:19:47Screener of the week. Yep it's at 12.
- 1:19:49At the same time I'll be going multi TV, potentially Penn State
- 1:19:53at Penn State. Michigan, Michigan.
- 1:19:55Laying five with all the shit that's going on at Michigan
- 1:19:59right now with the Connor Stallions, the potential they're
- 1:20:02saying they might fire Harbaugh, by the way.
- 1:20:07What are they really doing that none of these other teams are
- 1:20:10doing? Realistically I.
- 1:20:14Don't know, man. They just, you know what, you
- 1:20:17know what it is. I love what somebody said.
- 1:20:19And I'm not trying to defend him.
- 1:20:21What Harbaugh say about the TV money?
- 1:20:22You know what he said about TV money?
- 1:20:26What he said. Players deserve part of that TV
- 1:20:28money. Oh yeah, they got.
- 1:20:30I don't like that they got. To get him out of there.
- 1:20:33Hey, I get him out of here. But in this game it is in Happy
- 1:20:36Valley. It is a noon kick.
- 1:20:39I do not know who's going to win and when.
- 1:20:40I don't know who's going to win. Give me the home team.
- 1:20:42Give me some points. I'll take Penn State tally.
- 1:20:47What about you on this one, man? I never like taking Penn State
- 1:20:50in anything, but I'm going to take Penn State.
- 1:20:53Just like you said, home team. They got a lot going on.
- 1:20:56They got the points. Give me Penn State.
- 1:21:00All righty. Shelton Shelton's got Michigan.
- 1:21:05And you know what? He's right.
- 1:21:06He's right. Harbaugh is going to shut out
- 1:21:10the noise. They're going to play like the
- 1:21:13top three, top two team they are in the country.
- 1:21:16They're going to take care of Penn State.
- 1:21:19Buy more than five. Buy.
- 1:21:20More than five. That's what take care of me, OK?
- 1:21:24We going to see what's the score, what's the score, how big
- 1:21:27is it? Is he going to lay it on them?
- 1:21:29I don't think they'll lay it on, but I think it will be about a
- 1:21:32about a 10 point win, 10 point win.
- 1:21:34All right. All right, let's roll to the
- 1:21:36next one. Brian, your pick for the week.
- 1:21:40Mizzou and Tennessee, You know, Mizzou showed me a few things
- 1:21:46there with with that Georgia game last week.
- 1:21:49I know I kind of rode with them a little bit on that line
- 1:21:51because that was a kind of crazy line.
- 1:21:53Tennessee only getting one here. Give me Mizzou.
- 1:21:59All righty, All righty. I'm going complete opposite of
- 1:22:02you because they were in a war against Georgia.
- 1:22:05Most teams that play Georgia do not win the week after.
- 1:22:08It just seems that way because Georgia beats the crap out of
- 1:22:11people and with a one point, basically a pick em game.
- 1:22:15Gibby, Tennessee. Well, I mean both of y'all are
- 1:22:22pretty knowledgeable. I don't know what pick right, so
- 1:22:24I just. Looked at what Brian picked, he
- 1:22:26was the last one that did good. And I said I'm going to go with
- 1:22:32Brian. I just, I think, I think, I
- 1:22:34think Mizzou is going to be pissed.
- 1:22:37I mean they had chances in that game against Georgia.
- 1:22:40Georgia's probably the best team in college football.
- 1:22:42And you know, you throw a pick to a defensive lineman and a
- 1:22:45couple other things and game gets blown open.
- 1:22:48So I think they're going to come in pissed off, man.
- 1:22:50I got to go Mizzou. And Shelton filed it up there
- 1:22:55with Tennessee, Said Shelton is riding with Curtis on this one,
- 1:22:59right with me on this one. All right, we got a couple more
- 1:23:01games here. Let's go out West because it
- 1:23:03seems like we always go out West for at least one USC, Oregon,
- 1:23:08Oregon laying 15 points. USC coming off that heartbreaker
- 1:23:11against Washington, which was an.
- 1:23:14I watched a lot of that game. That was a entertaining game to
- 1:23:18watch. Yeah, this is Sheldon.
- 1:23:22So what's Sheldon saying on this one?
- 1:23:24She's laying or taking. Sheldon is out there taking
- 1:23:27Oregon here all. Right.
- 1:23:30And you know what? Hell yes.
- 1:23:33Hell yes, I think. I think that game might have
- 1:23:36finally broken USC. Yeah, well, the.
- 1:23:39UW game, yeah. Kayla Williams was crying.
- 1:23:42It looked like they broken, yeah.
- 1:23:43Yeah. So I I think, I think that team
- 1:23:45is finally broken. I think you're going to see
- 1:23:47some. I mean it's not going to be a
- 1:23:49blowout, blowout, but it I think it's going to be like a 17 or 20
- 1:23:54point and then. They And then they fired it off
- 1:23:56defensive coordinator, too. They did.
- 1:23:58But it don't matter. It don't.
- 1:24:00It don't matter Whoever the defensive coordinator, I don't
- 1:24:03believe Lincoln Riley coaches anything but offense.
- 1:24:05I don't think he steps into a room as a head coach.
- 1:24:07If he wasn't given superior talent at Oklahoma and USC, he
- 1:24:11would have been fired a long time ago.
- 1:24:14Oregon by 24. I'm going to say Lincoln rally.
- 1:24:19'S on fraud alert. I was.
- 1:24:20Going to say I was going to say Oregon by 21, so all right, me
- 1:24:24and Tally on the same day they blowing.
- 1:24:26The doors off, we finally riding, riding across the board.
- 1:24:28First of all, all right last one.
- 1:24:32Classic ACC rivalry. Game.
- 1:24:37Wide, right One ride right two. All those good games back in the
- 1:24:4290s. Some war.
- 1:24:44Some fights. Florida State.
- 1:24:46Miami 14 1/2, that is a lot of points.
- 1:24:52Brian, what are you saying on this one give?
- 1:24:55Give me them points, man. I I I think that Florida State
- 1:25:00is going to blow the doors off this team.
- 1:25:01I think Miami, much like USC, is kind of broken right now and I
- 1:25:08feel, I feel like the last few weeks of the season they've
- 1:25:11really kind of fallen back to where we thought they would be.
- 1:25:16From Jump Street there and I think they've been broken a
- 1:25:18little bit. I think FSU is going to bust it
- 1:25:21off one a little bit. I I think about another about
- 1:25:231718 point win here. So they'll cover that 14 and a
- 1:25:27half, all right. I I'm up next on this one.
- 1:25:30This one's at the Doke, so it will be loud.
- 1:25:32It will be energized and I think Florida State's going to win the
- 1:25:37game. I think they're going to win by
- 1:25:39like 14. So if this was 13 1/2 I would
- 1:25:43have won the other way. That hook is what got me.
- 1:25:46Curtis said the hook brought him back, Brought me back.
- 1:25:48Maybe the hook brought me back. But if if if Cristobal can't get
- 1:25:55them up to play this game because they look flat against
- 1:25:58NC State, they looked so flat. If he can't get him up for this
- 1:26:01game, he might not have a job come December.
- 1:26:06Yeah, I kind of, I kind of feel like, Curtis said.
- 1:26:09You know if it would have been just 13 1/2 I probably would
- 1:26:12have would have took Florida State.
- 1:26:14But I don't know. I know Florida State's wide
- 1:26:17receiver room's been banged up. Neither one of the top wide
- 1:26:21receivers played last week. I don't know if they go this
- 1:26:24week. I do know Miami has the athletes
- 1:26:27to play with them. I still think Florida State
- 1:26:30wins, but I think it may be about, you know, 13 or 14 and
- 1:26:34not 15. So I'll take Miami on this and.
- 1:26:40Shelton is riding with me on this one with Florida State.
- 1:26:44Very, very entertaining. Only one outright and multiple.
- 1:26:48No 3 way agrees. If I was, if I was anybody
- 1:26:52watching Boundary Corner, I would put my money on the
- 1:26:55Trojans this week. Because all of us.
- 1:26:58Bet on you better go the other way.
- 1:27:03Go the other way like we agree it's not hey.
- 1:27:05We were right on dub last week, though, so we were right.
- 1:27:07Yeah, yeah, yeah. Take that to the back they got.
- 1:27:09A Heisman one on they team. I guess USC got a Heisman one on
- 1:27:12they team too. So true, man.
- 1:27:14That's true. All right, boy, is anything
- 1:27:15broken in the last hour and 90 minutes here?
- 1:27:19My heart thinking about that last week game against
- 1:27:21Louisville, Yeah, I see that my heart won't broken as soon as I
- 1:27:25watch the first few plays and the way we look.
- 1:27:27He was like, let's do something else.
- 1:27:29Let me go play with the kids. Well, the.
- 1:27:31Well, The thing is, a couple neighbors came over, watched it
- 1:27:34in the garage with the kids. So you know, when he got 21, it
- 1:27:37was just kind of like you. You know, we all done it, right?
- 1:27:41Yeah, we've all had the coping. Where you see we ain't going to
- 1:27:43win this game. I'm going to go ahead and start
- 1:27:45my coping. Now get it out by the time
- 1:27:48dinner started. My wife made a delicious potato
- 1:27:50soup last Saturday night. Hit the spot, The game was over,
- 1:27:54I was eating and I was like, this tastes great.
- 1:27:57It's a couple good games on late.
- 1:27:59Go have myself a nice Coors banquet.
- 1:28:04Not. A sponsor, not a sponsor, but
- 1:28:08but Brian, we got Tally. I won't let Brian tell you what
- 1:28:12he had to do because he was in Blacksburg at Hokie House.
- 1:28:15Brian, what did you do? So I cut it.
- 1:28:19I cut it off as soon as like, as soon as they we got up.
- 1:28:22Well, we got down 14. I was like, all right, let's
- 1:28:25head back to the hotel. Head back to the hotel.
- 1:28:28We had dinner reservations at 7. At 622, NI was like, yeah, I'm
- 1:28:34not going to, I'm not going to interfere with that potential
- 1:28:37day. Let's go back to the hotel.
- 1:28:38Let's hang out, get showers, get ready for dinner.
- 1:28:42I can still watch game. This won't be in reach of any
- 1:28:46significant amount of alcohol. I will.
- 1:28:47Not Jerry Binding alcohol. I will not.
- 1:28:49I will not take this any further than I I've already taken it.
- 1:28:52So yeah, it's the way we do it. All right, Well, boys, that does
