- 0:05Speaker 1: Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the right time. A wave original.
- 0:09Speaker 1: My name is Bobani Jones. Thanks for listening wherever you
- 0:11Speaker 1: get your podcast. Thanks for watching us on YouTube. Subscribe, like,
- 0:16Speaker 1: rate us, review us, give us five stars. You only
- 0:18Speaker 1: give us four stars. I'm inclined to believe you are
- 0:22Speaker 1: a hater. We're hanging out with Jason Goff on a Thursday.
- 0:26Speaker 1: Check him out at the Athletic.
- 0:28Speaker 2: What's going on, man?
- 0:29Speaker 3: Hey, man. How you doing?
- 0:30Speaker 4: I'm always glad to be on the show. And also,
- 0:34Speaker 4: you know, I listen and I text you about things.
- 0:37Speaker 4: Great stuff with Bob Costas, brother.
- 0:39Speaker 2: Appreciate it.
- 0:40Speaker 4: I'm really happy that there's someone repping for this weird
- 0:43Speaker 4: age group of NBA fans that we're in where it's
- 0:45Speaker 4: like you can Jordan Stan if you want, but you're
- 0:48Speaker 4: also close to the LeBron Stan.
- 0:50Speaker 3: So like you're in that middle. And how, like, amazing
- 0:54Speaker 3: that time was.
- 0:55Speaker 4: And also, like, a time where you could root for
- 0:59Speaker 4: players that you knew never going to win a championship.
- 1:01Speaker 3: Yes, it was okay.
- 1:03Speaker 2: It was okay to have your guy.
- 1:06Speaker 3: Right. Mitch Richmond was cool. You know what I'm saying?
- 1:09Speaker 4: Now it's like James Harden.
- 1:11Speaker 3: His whole career is a failure.
- 1:12Speaker 4: Like, he scored 36 points a game one season.
- 1:16Speaker 1: Dominique Wilkins never got past the second round.
- 1:18Speaker 2: Still be shutting down tomorrow.
- 1:20Speaker 4: My favorite non-bull player of all time, Dominique.
- 1:24Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah, man. It was cool back then. I think
- 1:27Speaker 3: some of it is coming back now with.
- 1:29Speaker 4: These kids and, you know, the streamers and the little
- 1:33Speaker 4: mellow balls of the world, like this new wave of
- 1:35Speaker 4: how people are consuming. But I appreciate it because listening
- 1:38Speaker 4: to Bob talk about it, I'm like, yeah, I remember
- 1:40Speaker 4: Peter Vesey was like, he was like a villain with
- 1:43Speaker 4: a pen. You know what I mean?
- 1:45Speaker 3: It was super dope back then.
- 1:47Speaker 2: You just hit on a thought, right?
- 1:49Speaker 1: That is interesting because it's a thin line between a
- 1:55Speaker 1: loser and somebody who never won.
- 1:59Speaker 5: Right?
- 2:01Speaker 2: I have never thought of Dominique Wilkins as a loser.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I could see the argument one could make about James Harden.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I will not call him a loser because if he
- 2:14Speaker 1: wanted to shoot me for that, like, I'm not saying
- 2:17Speaker 1: he would be right, but I wouldn't be surprised, right?
- 2:20Speaker 2: So I'm not going to recall him a loser.
- 2:23Speaker 1: However, I have seen him be the cause of some
- 2:26Speaker 1: losses in some very significant places.
- 2:29Speaker 2: In dramatic fashion.
- 2:32Speaker 1: Yeah, but there's a whole rack of guys, a wave
- 2:34Speaker 1: of guys, that for whatever reason, like, nobody's like, man,
- 2:38Speaker 1: that George Girvin. I guess they won in the ABA,
- 2:40Speaker 1: but nobody's like, yeah, that George Girvin. That guy never
- 2:42Speaker 1: won an NBA championship. I do wonder what we would
- 2:45Speaker 1: have said about Dr. J if 1983 had.
- 2:50Speaker 2: Not happened, right?
- 2:52Speaker 1: But how many guys we got right now that... are
- 2:57Speaker 1: of that tier and just, I mean, I think there's
- 3:01Speaker 1: two lines. There's playing for a championship and just about
- 3:03Speaker 1: every great player has played for a championship. And that's
- 3:05Speaker 1: the greatest knock against Dominique is that all the great
- 3:08Speaker 1: ones at least got to the finals, right? James Harden
- 3:12Speaker 1: has never been to the finals. Like who are the
- 3:16Speaker 1: guys that have never been to the finals? That list
- 3:20Speaker 1: is not long.
- 3:22Speaker 3: That, yeah, yeah, and, well, you know, we do the
- 3:26Speaker 3: Barkley thing, but because he's been... Barkley got to the finals.
- 3:28Speaker 3: He got to the finals with Phoenix, right?
- 3:30Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 3:31Speaker 3: See, I....
- 3:33Speaker 5: The post-Jordan world that we live in and what it
- 3:37Speaker 5: did to load management, what it did to contracts, what
- 3:41Speaker 5: it's done to legacies and how we talk about them, like,
- 3:45Speaker 5: you know, and also the Kobe, you know, factor as.
- 3:47Speaker 4: Well, where it's like, if you didn't win anything or
- 3:50Speaker 4: if you didn't win this many, you won't be respected.
- 3:52Speaker 4: And then you get the guys who go to the
- 3:54Speaker 4: one and win it or go to two.
- 3:57Speaker 3: And win one. Like, for instance... Anthony Edwards in this
- 4:00Speaker 3: mold that he's in now. Fantastic. Terrific player.
- 4:04Speaker 4: There's something happening in San Antonio that's about to take
- 4:07Speaker 4: off while the Minnesota thing is staying where it is
- 4:10Speaker 4: in a good way, but not championship feelings.
- 4:13Speaker 3: If Anthony Edwards goes a decade and don't make it
- 4:16Speaker 3: to one.
- 4:17Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:17Speaker 3: What are we going to say? Anthony wasn't cold?
- 4:19Speaker 2: Hey, man.
- 4:20Speaker 1: And look, Anthony Edwards got to where he got one
- 4:22Speaker 1: year with Carl Anthony Towns as his right-hand man. And
- 4:26Speaker 1: the next year with Julius Randle as the right-hand man.
- 4:28Speaker 1: Two guys who were traded for one another. Specifically, I believe,
- 4:32Speaker 1: because each team thought they couldn't win with the one
- 4:35Speaker 1: they had.
- 4:36Speaker 3: Right.
- 4:37Speaker 2: Right. And they went and they probably talked them dudes
- 4:40Speaker 2: up in the trade. Oh, man, it's just a salary thing.
- 4:42Speaker 3: You know what I mean?
- 4:43Speaker 2: Like, we got to stay out of the tax. You're
- 4:45Speaker 2: getting a great one here, man. I promise you. you
- 4:47Speaker 2: know they they.
- 4:48Speaker 1: Talked about that shit when they made that move but
- 4:50Speaker 1: anthony edwards getting to he is the legend killer right
- 4:54Speaker 1: like he went through and he knocked down name all
- 4:57Speaker 1: the guys that he went through in order to get
- 4:59Speaker 1: there all his heroes in order to get to that
- 5:03Speaker 1: conference final and now victor who's out here making the
- 5:08Speaker 1: why i'm the mvp case that is pretty compelling um.
- 5:14Speaker 2: They've never won a playoff series before.
- 5:16Speaker 1: There's no way that one could truly reasonably say that
- 5:21Speaker 1: they believe the Spurs are going to win a championship
- 5:25Speaker 1: because that is the most unprecedented thing we've ever seen.
- 5:28Speaker 1: The closest thing that I could point to to that
- 5:31Speaker 1: is the Boston Celtics in 2008, where that was the
- 5:35Speaker 1: first year of that team.
- 5:37Speaker 2: But it was old dudes. You know what I mean?
- 5:40Speaker 1: Like it was dudes with some miles on them, with
- 5:42Speaker 1: some experience, built around three guys in their 30s. That's
- 5:46Speaker 1: not what we're talking about here in San Antonio, but
- 5:48Speaker 1: the Celtics didn't have anybody that was eight feet tall.
- 5:51Speaker 6: Now, so the issue I might have is did that
- 5:56Speaker 6: Celtics squad, like Kevin fell on his face? Ray did
- 6:00Speaker 6: what he had to do in Seattle and didn't go
- 6:03Speaker 6: as far as he wanted to with Rashard Lewis.
- 6:05Speaker 3: And Paul was with.
- 6:06Speaker 4: I mean, there was a time where Paul was with
- 6:08Speaker 4: Antoine Walker and we were like, man, these two dudes
- 6:10Speaker 4: are cold, but they're not winning enough.
- 6:12Speaker 3: So they all went through this.
- 6:12Speaker 2: I mean, they've been to a conference final?
- 6:14Speaker 3: Right, right, right. So they went through their struggles separately
- 6:17Speaker 3: and got thrown together. Like, we.
- 6:18Speaker 4: That NBA lore of, like, you gotta fall down before
- 6:21Speaker 4: you win the championship. Right.
- 6:22Speaker 3: I mean, Mike did it, right? Detroit.
- 6:25Speaker 4: People talk about Mike like there wasn't Game 5 in
- 6:27Speaker 4: 89 or 80. I think it was 88 where it
- 6:29Speaker 4: was like, that's not the way you want to go out, right?
- 6:34Speaker 4: Victor is sitting back like, first of all, it seems
- 6:37Speaker 4: like so long ago that we were talking about people
- 6:40Speaker 4: on his team don't know he's the best player.
- 6:41Speaker 3: And that was his first year. Yeah, they are.
- 6:45Speaker 2: Stay all out of there.
- 6:46Speaker 3: They figured it out. They figured it out, right?
- 6:48Speaker 4: And now, Stephon Caswell, he's popping up like, hey, man,
- 6:52Speaker 4: this dude is a lot better than he had ever
- 6:54Speaker 4: shown at UConn, and he was the number two, what,
- 6:56Speaker 4: number two pick, if I'm not mistaken, right?
- 6:59Speaker 3: So it's like, man, I.
- 7:01Speaker 4: Don't know how to view this going forward, especially with the...
- 7:06Speaker 4: The glut of young NBA talent and now the old
- 7:09Speaker 4: heads who were like, all right, now Luka's got to
- 7:12Speaker 4: go to another one. Shea Gildress Alexander is now a
- 7:16Speaker 4: prime veteran with a bunch of young dudes around him
- 7:19Speaker 4: who's already been to one and won one. This is
- 7:23Speaker 4: uncharted territory for the youth that is about to just
- 7:26Speaker 4: take over and also the young, I say the prime
- 7:30Speaker 4: veterans who still need.
- 7:32Speaker 3: To win one, right?
- 7:33Speaker 2: Yeah, but Victor is.
- 7:42Speaker 2: Born superstars are rare.
- 7:45Speaker 3: Right?
- 7:45Speaker 1: And I don't just mean superstar in the sense of
- 7:48Speaker 1: how good a player is. I mean in terms of
- 7:51Speaker 1: grasping and appreciation of the magnitude of everything that goes
- 7:56Speaker 1: into being you, right? Not just, I'm going to dominate
- 7:59Speaker 1: on the floor, getting a little fan section going and
- 8:02Speaker 1: all of that stuff, right? Showing up at the all-star
- 8:05Speaker 1: game and making everybody play hard because you don't want
- 8:09Speaker 1: to get your shit tossed by this.
- 8:11Speaker 2: Eight foot tall monster, right?
- 8:15Speaker 1: Like completely changing the everything around everything that he touches.
- 8:21Speaker 7: Right.
- 8:22Speaker 1: He is a, he understands what it, what it means
- 8:25Speaker 1: to be a superstar in this league. He's that guy.
- 8:29Speaker 1: He made that call and he's, he enjoys defeating people.
- 8:34Speaker 2: Like he, and he enjoys it.
- 8:38Speaker 5: Yes.
- 8:38Speaker 2: Yes.
- 8:38Speaker 3: Yes.
- 8:39Speaker 1: Like, like beating people is what he's in this for. Um,
- 8:44Speaker 1: and he wants this MVP. Like, this is interesting. He,
- 8:49Speaker 1: is he the MVP? I don't know if statistically you
- 8:53Speaker 1: can make the argument, right? He's going to make it
- 8:55Speaker 1: to the 65 game mark if he plays eight more
- 8:58Speaker 1: games and they have 10 left.
- 8:59Speaker 2: So I'm assuming that he's going to get out there.
- 9:03Speaker 1: They are the two seed in the West, which none
- 9:06Speaker 1: of us thought that they were going to be in
- 9:08Speaker 1: a season where it looked at a point like Oklahoma
- 9:10Speaker 1: City was going with 75 games, except for the fact
- 9:13Speaker 1: that Spurs went out there and tossed him three times.
- 9:17Speaker 2: In a row, right?
- 9:21Speaker 1: He's the story for this postseason. The West is looking incredible,
- 9:26Speaker 1: but he's the thing to look at.
- 9:29Speaker 3: That's it.
- 9:30Speaker 4: I'll never forget having an argument on air with Rodney
- 9:33Speaker 4: Harrison during the Cam Newton MVP run that season where
- 9:37Speaker 4: I'm like, hey, man, for me, There's simple metrics, there's
- 9:41Speaker 4: the advanced stuff.
- 9:43Speaker 3: But sometimes you just gotta ask, who is this season about?
- 9:46Speaker 3: Who is this season about?
- 9:48Speaker 4: And the slow burn that has been this Victor Wynn-Binyama season,
- 9:52Speaker 4: where it's been fantastic things damn near every.
- 9:55Speaker 3: Night, but it's like, oh yeah, he did another fantastic, like,
- 9:58Speaker 3: we're getting used to it.
- 9:59Speaker 4: In a way where, you know, prime Giannis, like early
- 10:02Speaker 4: prime Giannis, who's like, this dude putting up Shaq numbers
- 10:05Speaker 4: and he running fast breaks and all. Man, that 80-foot
- 10:09Speaker 4: pass that he caught with one hand, slung it to
- 10:12Speaker 4: De'Aaron Fox in the corner... Pocket pass, De'Aaron Fox catches
- 10:18Speaker 4: the ball and De'Aaron's like, no, no, no, you eight
- 10:20Speaker 4: feet and your second jump is as quick as any
- 10:22Speaker 4: wing in this league. I'm just going to throw it
- 10:24Speaker 4: back up there as soon as you come down.
- 10:26Speaker 3: Like the shit that he is doing, bro.
- 10:29Speaker 4: When I heard LeBron was coming from Sonny Vaccaro on
- 10:33Speaker 4: a telephone call where he was like, I got the
- 10:34Speaker 4: greatest player of all time in my camp. That's the
- 10:38Speaker 4: way I felt when I'm like, all right, the Victor
- 10:41Speaker 4: Wimpinyama thing is coming. And then you start checking it out.
- 10:43Speaker 3: And he's like, no, no, no, no, no. This ain't
- 10:45Speaker 3: just happening against cats who, like, smoke cigarettes. Like, you
- 10:49Speaker 3: know that old European, like, stuff we throw on? No,
- 10:52Speaker 3: this is coming.
- 10:53Speaker 4: And the fact that it's landed and he's doing this,
- 10:56Speaker 4: first of all, with minute restrictions in the beginning, and
- 10:59Speaker 4: now the target is squarely on his back. LeBron's saying
- 11:02Speaker 4: in the All-Star game, and everybody can read the language
- 11:05Speaker 4: because this is how these dudes feel.
- 11:07Speaker 3: Is fuck Wimby. He ain't making us play hard. No,
- 11:11Speaker 3: everyone feels that way and you still can't do nothing
- 11:13Speaker 3: about it.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah, I'd say it is though.
- 11:18Speaker 1: Where everybody lands in the standings is going to be
- 11:20Speaker 1: interesting because the Lakers... are playing themselves into the three
- 11:24Speaker 1: they're a game and a half ahead of Denver where
- 11:28Speaker 1: to me it gets interesting with the Spurs is if
- 11:31Speaker 1: the Nuggets wind up in that three get to the
- 11:33Speaker 1: second round and now Victor's got to deal with the
- 11:36Speaker 1: guy I still say is the best player in the
- 11:38Speaker 1: NBA is Jokic I don't know how like that it
- 11:41Speaker 1: will be very interesting because I don't feel like we've
- 11:43Speaker 1: seen them play against each other a lot if I'm
- 11:45Speaker 1: not mistaken like it feels like i think it's i
- 11:48Speaker 1: think it's the nuggets that yogesh don't play them games
- 11:50Speaker 1: and i think it's just because they try to hold
- 11:52Speaker 1: it out right like they're not trying to give that
- 11:55Speaker 1: monster any ability to adjust and to figure out what
- 11:59Speaker 1: to do like this is this is it but i
- 12:02Speaker 1: i brought him up in part because i'm seeing people
- 12:04Speaker 1: talk about the 65 game limit on um Whether you
- 12:09Speaker 1: can win MVP or make all the NBA or win
- 12:11Speaker 1: the awards.
- 12:12Speaker 2: And it's so funny.
- 12:13Speaker 1: Because I swear I was here when they put the
- 12:15Speaker 1: rule in and I did not hear all this complaint.
- 12:18Speaker 3: So I hated it immediately.
- 12:21Speaker 7: Yeah.
- 12:21Speaker 2: But right fast. You know I'm right about not saying... No,
- 12:25Speaker 2: not the complainant.
- 12:26Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 12:27Speaker 1: Yeah, but the complainers, all of a sudden now everybody
- 12:29Speaker 1: hated it. I believe that you did.
- 12:31Speaker 3: Yeah, so....
- 12:34Speaker 4: Too many people try to make basketball what they knew
- 12:39Speaker 4: it to be.
- 12:40Speaker 3: And there's a game that evolved.
- 12:43Speaker 4: I don't think any game has evolved past the limits
- 12:47Speaker 4: or the definitions of what it used to be, more
- 12:49Speaker 4: so than basketball, right? Football can change rules every single year,
- 12:54Speaker 4: and it don't matter because it's football. And we're going
- 12:56Speaker 4: to find a way to figure it out, kick off rules, this, that,
- 12:59Speaker 4: and the other. Like, you know, I remember when there
- 13:02Speaker 4: wasn't a halo on punt returns, right? Like, things change
- 13:06Speaker 4: because the evolution of the game is accepted.
- 13:08Speaker 3: With what's happening now.
- 13:11Speaker 4: All the space and pace stuff, all the, you know,
- 13:14Speaker 4: you got dribble handoffs happening 45 feet away from the
- 13:17Speaker 4: basket to make the best athletes in the world go
- 13:20Speaker 4: downhill at crazy speeds. When the game says, hey, man,
- 13:25Speaker 4: these cats are breaking down, one, because they're playing more
- 13:27Speaker 4: basketball than ever, two, because Posey Jordan, nothing but a
- 13:31Speaker 4: championship matters, and we're paying these dudes exorbitant amounts of
- 13:34Speaker 4: money so the regular season has been, you know, kind
- 13:37Speaker 4: of brought down.
- 13:37Speaker 3: A couple of notches.
- 13:39Speaker 4: This 65-game stuff, immediately, I was like, all right, one,
- 13:42Speaker 4: you're either going to have cats playing games they shouldn't
- 13:44Speaker 4: be playing, Or, getting back to the MVP conversation.
- 13:48Speaker 3: We're going to lose the journal of the season, the
- 13:52Speaker 3: story of the season.
- 13:53Speaker 4: You ain't telling me Cade Cunningham, if he missed, if
- 13:56Speaker 4: he only played 62, 63 games, he wasn't one of
- 13:58Speaker 4: the best three guards for these all-NBA teams, first.
- 14:02Speaker 3: And third teams?
- 14:03Speaker 1: But, but, but, we know this was never about that logic.
- 14:10Speaker 1: We know what basically happened. The people on the internet
- 14:15Speaker 1: basically accuse these dudes of faking injuries, right?
- 14:20Speaker 3: Or being lazy.
- 14:21Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Or just the general idea of load management, right?
- 14:26Speaker 1: But the idea was these guys are healthy enough to
- 14:29Speaker 1: play and they're not playing. Therefore, we need to find
- 14:34Speaker 1: a way to induce this effort, right? Because effort is
- 14:39Speaker 1: not an observable variable, right? You have to induce it.
- 14:43Speaker 1: So how are we going to induce this? We're going
- 14:46Speaker 1: to induce it by putting these restrictions on these awards,
- 14:51Speaker 1: but not because of the awards, because of the money
- 14:57Speaker 1: that was associated with the awards in terms of awarding
- 15:02Speaker 1: Supermax contracts, right?
- 15:05Speaker 2: That was the reason they did it.
- 15:07Speaker 1: And now what they found out is, nah, man, these
- 15:10Speaker 1: dudes really be hurt, man. Like, And maybe it's some
- 15:13Speaker 1: quirky stuff, like a collapsed love for Cade Cunningham.
- 15:16Speaker 2: That is not an overuse issue, right? That's not why
- 15:21Speaker 2: we're here.
- 15:22Speaker 1: But people wanted the guys to play more games. And
- 15:27Speaker 1: the NBA made a decision that, to me, was about
- 15:30Speaker 1: winning a press conference, and telling the fans, we want
- 15:33Speaker 1: these guys to play more games too, and don't you worry,
- 15:37Speaker 1: we're getting on the case, because people wanted them to
- 15:39Speaker 1: get on the case. Then they got on the case,
- 15:42Speaker 1: and now people are like.
- 15:44Speaker 2: Man, we ain't even want that.
- 15:47Speaker 3: Man, what is this?
- 15:48Speaker 2: This is stupid.
- 15:49Speaker 1: Now, to me, where it's interesting is that for the MVP,
- 15:57Speaker 1: this was always going to enforce itself. there's only been
- 16:00Speaker 1: one MVP in an 82-game season who played fewer than
- 16:03Speaker 1: 65 games. Like, this is not an award that we
- 16:06Speaker 1: give people who don't play games. And the only one
- 16:08Speaker 1: that was, by the way, was Bill Walton in 78
- 16:11Speaker 1: coming off the championship when the players still voted, by
- 16:15Speaker 1: the way, and the players were clearly sick.
- 16:18Speaker 2: Of voting for Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Like, that's where that came from.
- 16:22Speaker 2: And he played 58 games that season. That's it.
- 16:26Speaker 1: 58 games in the course of that season.
- 16:29Speaker 2: That's the only time it had ever happened.
- 16:31Speaker 1: This was about all NBA team and defensive player of
- 16:35Speaker 1: the year to try to hold up cats money, right?
- 16:39Speaker 2: That's all it was.
- 16:39Speaker 1: But then they wind up in a year where all
- 16:42Speaker 1: the best players is missing a gang of games. Now,
- 16:47Speaker 1: my question is, if we didn't have this 65 game
- 16:50Speaker 1: thing in there, it was a throwing out there. Would
- 16:52Speaker 1: we give the MVP to somebody who only plays 60 games?
- 16:55Speaker 2: Like, will we do it? I have a hard time
- 16:57Speaker 2: seeing that happen.
- 16:58Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Again, you got to be the story of
- 17:02Speaker 3: the season.
- 17:02Speaker 4: Like, even with Jokic, the voter fatigue and all those
- 17:06Speaker 4: things fly in there as well.
- 17:10Speaker 3: The money aspect really sucks, right?
- 17:13Speaker 4: It wasn't a Klay Thompson who missed an all-NBA vote
- 17:16Speaker 4: because one reporter voted some other way and he missed
- 17:21Speaker 4: the Supermax contract. When you start messing with dudes' money,
- 17:24Speaker 4: then we're talking a different... A different ball of wax.
- 17:28Speaker 4: I just don't know how you fix it, man. I
- 17:31Speaker 4: don't know how you fix it. I don't know what
- 17:34Speaker 4: you can do. I don't know the restrictions and parameters
- 17:37Speaker 4: you can place on basketball outside of your league, because
- 17:41Speaker 4: like I said, there are people here in this city
- 17:43Speaker 4: that knew how much basketball Derrick Rose was playing right
- 17:47Speaker 4: as a young kid.
- 17:48Speaker 6: Right.
- 17:48Speaker 4: And, and, and how much, you know, not just AAU stuff,
- 17:51Speaker 4: but just how much ball he was playing, even though
- 17:53Speaker 4: he wasn't playing pickup ball at 505, he was out here,
- 17:56Speaker 4: you know, and he was, he was wrapped up. He was,
- 17:59Speaker 4: he had all the arm sleeves and all the knee
- 18:01Speaker 4: sleeves before he.
- 18:02Speaker 3: Even got to Memphis.
- 18:03Speaker 4: So I don't know what it is you can do
- 18:05Speaker 4: for the, the, the greater basketball story and, and, and,
- 18:09Speaker 4: and the observer feeling more fulfilled. And on top of it, man, like,
- 18:14Speaker 4: The NBA MVP is still an MVP that means something.
- 18:18Speaker 3: Yes. Baseball, obviously. Football, cool, but there's years where the
- 18:27Speaker 3: MVP has been like, oh, yeah, that guy won MVP,
- 18:29Speaker 3: and it hasn't been the story of the season.
- 18:31Speaker 2: Only Hall of Famers win MVPs.
- 18:34Speaker 1: The only MVP that is probably not going to make
- 18:37Speaker 1: the Hall of Fame is Derrick Rose.
- 18:39Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 18:40Speaker 2: Literally, every other one. You win a scoring championship in
- 18:43Speaker 2: the NBA, you're going to the Hall of Fame. They're
- 18:46Speaker 2: all in, too.
- 18:47Speaker 1: Like, this is, yeah, there is no Brian Sipe on
- 18:51Speaker 1: the list of NBA Hall of Famers.
- 18:54Speaker 2: There's no Terry Pendleton on the list of NBA Hall
- 18:57Speaker 2: of Famers.
- 18:57Speaker 1: It's just, it's not, that's not how, NBA MVPs, I mean,
- 19:01Speaker 1: that's not how it works.
- 19:03Speaker 4: Yeah, and now with this next wave of dudes, the
- 19:07Speaker 4: whole Wimby thing and everybody in sports should be keeping
- 19:10Speaker 4: their fingers crossed.
- 19:11Speaker 3: Obviously, hell, you see a man that big, the.
- 19:13Speaker 4: First thing you think about is the feats, right?
- 19:16Speaker 3: You go back to Sam Bui, you go back to
- 19:18Speaker 3: Rouse Bams, and you go back to Bill Walton, right?
- 19:21Speaker 3: Joel Embiid.
- 19:22Speaker 4: First thing you think of a man over 7'1, 7'2,
- 19:25Speaker 4: is hopefully the lower extremities hold.
- 19:27Speaker 3: Up, right?
- 19:28Speaker 4: And he's spindly as it is, but it's not like
- 19:30Speaker 4: he's always in the paint, not like the paint.
- 19:33Speaker 3: Is what it used to be in terms of physical contact.
- 19:35Speaker 4: But yeah, man, I can't see myself thinking in the future,
- 19:41Speaker 4: especially how normalized missing games have become. I can't see
- 19:44Speaker 4: myself thinking, ah, you know, Wimby only got two MVPs
- 19:48Speaker 4: because of that damn 65.
- 19:50Speaker 3: Game rule.
- 19:50Speaker 4: So he really isn't one of the greats. Like all
- 19:53Speaker 4: of our lenses are changing in real time.
- 19:56Speaker 3: And I think we're in.
- 19:56Speaker 4: This crossroads of like, how will history talk about this
- 20:00Speaker 4: time of basketball where You know, and also, let's face it,
- 20:05Speaker 4: there are more people who play the game that are
- 20:07Speaker 4: talking about the game than ever.
- 20:10Speaker 3: Than ever. Like, our orators used to be reporters. It
- 20:14Speaker 3: used to be big voice guys and girls out there
- 20:17Speaker 3: who talked about the game.
- 20:18Speaker 4: Now, it's dudes who are actually in the game who,
- 20:21Speaker 4: after they get out five years later, seven years later,
- 20:23Speaker 4: tell you, hey, man, I was mailing it in at
- 20:26Speaker 4: the last half of that season.
- 20:27Speaker 3: Boy, I was bad this, that, and the other. So
- 20:29Speaker 3: there's this.
- 20:30Speaker 4: There's this breaking down of the fourth wall that I
- 20:32Speaker 4: think a lot of fans are privy to that, that
- 20:35Speaker 4: detracts or takes away from.
- 20:37Speaker 3: Some of the lore that we kind of grew up
- 20:39Speaker 3: with thinking like, all right, cool. Like the 82 game
- 20:41Speaker 3: seasons that, that.
- 20:42Speaker 4: Jordan played in a row where he played all the games,
- 20:45Speaker 4: all the playoff games, all these other things. And then we, we,
- 20:47Speaker 4: we look back and like, all right, but guys had 15,
- 20:50Speaker 4: 14 year runs and now 17 to 20 year careers
- 20:54Speaker 4: on like unrealistically the norm for stars.
- 20:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 20:58Speaker 8: But brother, here's the thing.
- 20:59Speaker 1: Again, that assumes that the point of this is about
- 21:05Speaker 1: making people worthy of the awards. And that's not it. Look,
- 21:11Speaker 1: you can trust the voters to get it right. You
- 21:13Speaker 1: know what I mean? If the voters are there, they
- 21:17Speaker 1: clearly have figured out on their own. Even Joel Embiid,
- 21:19Speaker 1: he won the MVP.
- 21:20Speaker 3: 66 games.
- 21:23Speaker 2: Although I think, if I'm not mistaken, the rule was
- 21:25Speaker 2: in place. But see, that.
- 21:29Speaker 1: Is one of those that gets you into the idea that, well,
- 21:33Speaker 1: maybe we're going to be able to drag some people
- 21:35Speaker 1: out here and get them to play.
- 21:38Speaker 2: But no, they're going to be interested.
- 21:40Speaker 3: Got Joe rocking out there like Willis Reed.
- 21:42Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Slap that table, get in. Get your
- 21:48Speaker 2: ass back out of here.
- 21:49Speaker 3: Sub me out. Sub me out. Yeah.
- 21:51Speaker 1: Coming up next, we're going to talk about this interview
- 21:53Speaker 1: that Jay-Z did with GQ, if interview is even the
- 21:55Speaker 1: right word. Ever wanted to go to the NBA finals? Well,

- 23:15Speaker 3: All right.
- 23:15Speaker 1: We are back with Jason golf. Um, so I checked
- 23:20Speaker 1: out the Jay-Z interview, at least much of it. I
- 23:23Speaker 1: felt like it was very long and he, he did
- 23:26Speaker 1: not say very much in the course of, Of that interview, Joel,
- 23:31Speaker 1: my good buddy Joel, Joel had the best line about it,
- 23:34Speaker 1: which was, take the 500,000. And for those of you
- 23:42Speaker 1: who don't know, there's a long running meme, what would
- 23:45Speaker 1: you rather have? insert dollar amount, we'll call it $ 500, 000 here,
- 23:49Speaker 1: $ 500, 000 or dinner with Jay-Z. And the idea is that
- 23:54Speaker 1: all that game that Jay-Z would give you over the
- 23:57Speaker 1: course of dinner would be worth more.
- 24:00Speaker 2: Than $ 500, 000. And Joel is like, no, after I.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Read that interview, You just need to take $ 500, 000.
- 24:06Speaker 3: Before I read that interview. You kidding me?
- 24:10Speaker 1: I mean, we knew it before, but it was definitely
- 24:13Speaker 1: solidified after.
- 24:15Speaker 3: Reading that interview. You talking about stands? You talking about stands? Listen,
- 24:21Speaker 3: I am a home stand that... I'm in this realm
- 24:24Speaker 3: now of, like, as a LeBron fan, too, where it's like, hey, man,
- 24:28Speaker 3: you got it. Like, all right, cool. You did it.
- 24:31Speaker 3: You did it, player. Like, you got as much. Hey,
- 24:34Speaker 3: you're a millionaire. Two times over. Like, I get it.
- 24:37Speaker 3: You cold. Hey, thanks for the vulnerable album, you know, 444,
- 24:41Speaker 3: the tough listen.
- 24:43Speaker 4: I'm with you, fam. The 17 minute God did verse.
- 24:47Speaker 4: You still cold. You know, you can still wrap your
- 24:49Speaker 4: ass up. I sat there and I was like, hey,
- 24:52Speaker 4: what am I going to get from it? And I
- 24:53Speaker 4: saw the video as well. And I'm like, oh, he
- 24:57Speaker 4: he just hit you with the parables. He hit you
- 25:00Speaker 4: with the parables. He hit you with the and the
- 25:02Speaker 4: best thing. He hit you with the usual suspects again,
- 25:06Speaker 4: whereas like I'm going to talk about the system.
- 25:09Speaker 3: And then be the system at the same.
- 25:11Speaker 9: Time the amazing thing about Jay-Z is he is very
- 25:20Speaker 9: invested in the building of the myth of Jay-Z he
- 25:22Speaker 9: is not the only person in such a position though
- 25:24Speaker 9: he has access to tools in order to do so
- 25:27Speaker 9: right now I want to be fair to all parties
- 25:29Speaker 9: involved that if that interview ever had the chance of
- 25:32Speaker 9: being tough it was never going to take place and
- 25:36Speaker 9: for those who don't know It's 30 years since Jay-Z's
- 25:39Speaker 9: first album, Reasonable Doubt.
- 25:40Speaker 2: It's 25 years since his other.
- 25:44Speaker 1: The two albums that people generally speak of as the
- 25:46Speaker 1: two best Jay-Z albums are Reasonable Doubt and The Blueprint.
- 25:48Speaker 2: Blueprint came out in 2001.
- 25:49Speaker 3: He's doing....
- 25:51Speaker 1: A couple of concerts at Yankee Stadium around this. Apparently
- 25:54Speaker 1: now he's added a third one. He's going to the
- 25:56Speaker 1: Roots picnic. Like this is a year of Jay-Z. And
- 25:59Speaker 1: I don't know if Jay-Z is selling something else, right?
- 26:02Speaker 1: Like if there's an album that's coming with it, presumably
- 26:05Speaker 1: that's going to happen. But the reason I'm not so
- 26:06Speaker 1: sure about that, or it doesn't, I don't think these
- 26:09Speaker 1: are vehicles to sell an album.
- 26:11Speaker 2: I think these are vehicles to sell the legend of Jay-Z.
- 26:14Speaker 1: Right because i don't think there's not that much money
- 26:16Speaker 1: in making music anymore he doesn't need an album to
- 26:19Speaker 1: do the tour or to do a tour or to
- 26:21Speaker 1: do these concerts he's got these other things he is
- 26:24Speaker 1: about building the idea or the notion um of jay-z
- 26:30Speaker 1: and people want to feel like one of us got
- 26:36Speaker 1: to the top and that jay-z is an example of
- 26:39Speaker 1: that right But I saw Jay-Z say in this interview
- 26:45Speaker 1: that he got to where he was. It was him
- 26:47Speaker 1: pushing back on the idea that billionaires are inherently bad.
- 26:51Speaker 1: An idea that he doesn't understand, but we'll get to
- 26:53Speaker 1: that in a minute, right? But he had the gall
- 26:56Speaker 1: to say the words, I didn't get here by taking
- 27:00Speaker 1: advantage of people. And I'm like, you sold crack.
- 27:08Speaker 2: To your mother. You told me that.
- 27:15Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:17Speaker 2: Like 444 was the vulnerable album. Absolutely, right?
- 27:20Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 27:21Speaker 1: But he makes the point in there that, or he
- 27:23Speaker 1: made a point in the interview I thought was interesting.
- 27:25Speaker 1: He was like, well, I talk about when.
- 27:26Speaker 2: I take losses. I have songs like Regrets and You
- 27:29Speaker 2: Must Love Me.
- 27:29Speaker 1: No, You Must Love Me is entirely about how terrible
- 27:33Speaker 1: you were and you still keep winning with the people
- 27:35Speaker 1: to whom you were terrible.
- 27:37Speaker 9: Right?
- 27:38Speaker 4: Didn't he shoot a family member in You Must Love Me?
- 27:42Speaker 2: Yes.
- 27:43Speaker 3: Yes.
- 27:43Speaker 7: Yes.
- 27:43Speaker 2: It ran into the night as if it was not
- 27:46Speaker 2: his family. That was what he said. Regrets.
- 27:48Speaker 1: The whole point of regrets is, hey, baby, if you
- 27:50Speaker 1: try to win, got to do some shit.
- 27:53Speaker 2: Hey, that's what it is. But I'm just like, you're right.
- 27:56Speaker 2: He is the system.
- 27:57Speaker 1: Like his goal was clearly to become part of this
- 28:00Speaker 1: system because there is no countercultural billionaire.
- 28:04Speaker 2: It doesn't work that way.
- 28:06Speaker 3: No. No.
- 28:08Speaker 4: So throughout like when the Colin Kaepernick thing was going
- 28:12Speaker 4: down and there was a there was a moment there
- 28:16Speaker 4: that it was reaching a boiling point because the NFL
- 28:21Speaker 4: had positioned JV as, OK, this will be our conduit.
- 28:24Speaker 3: This will be our vessel to to help.
- 28:27Speaker 4: People understand in the urban environments and, you know, black
- 28:31Speaker 4: folks and rap heads and hip hop lovers and anybody
- 28:35Speaker 4: of the culture that, hey, we are making our strides.
- 28:39Speaker 4: There was a moment there where a lot of people
- 28:41Speaker 4: were like, you know what, this is where I get off.
- 28:44Speaker 4: This is where we start talking about performances that have
- 28:48Speaker 4: time being more important than... Because the whole... What was
- 28:52Speaker 4: the statement? We don't have to kneel anymore or that
- 28:55Speaker 4: kind of vibe.
- 28:56Speaker 3: Right.
- 28:57Speaker 2: We're beyond kneeling.
- 28:58Speaker 3: Yeah, we're beyond kneeling, right? And from that moment on, the.
- 29:02Speaker 4: The.
- 29:06Speaker 4: The underworld of Jay-Z hate started to rise to the
- 29:12Speaker 4: surface of like, hey, man, you can't just be the most,
- 29:16Speaker 4: you know, ballin' this dude, have the greatest life and
- 29:19Speaker 4: tell us about it all these years, and then on
- 29:21Speaker 4: top of it be like, hey, time for y'all to
- 29:24Speaker 4: cut this shit out.
- 29:24Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 29:27Speaker 4: It felt like the homie coming back to the block like, hey, man,
- 29:30Speaker 4: y'all still doing this bullshit out here, man? I tried
- 29:34Speaker 4: to get you into that real estate seminar two weeks
- 29:36Speaker 4: ago that I was throwing and you decided not to.
- 29:39Speaker 4: I guess you just love being broke I'll catch you
- 29:42Speaker 4: later and then you just see the smoke from the
- 29:44Speaker 4: exhaust from the bins like fly up in everybody's face
- 29:47Speaker 4: brother do you.
- 29:47Speaker 2: Remember when he tried to get Marcy on the crypto Yes!
- 29:53Speaker 2: It wasn't enough that you used to sell them crack.
- 29:55Speaker 2: Now you want to sell them funny money?
- 29:57Speaker 3: Funny money.
- 29:58Speaker 2: Right? Like, now you're trying to get them on the
- 30:01Speaker 2: funny money? Like, this is.
- 30:02Speaker 4: And I.
- 30:06Speaker 3: I love the music, right?
- 30:08Speaker 4: I grew up around people who were in those kinds
- 30:12Speaker 4: of ventures, shall we say. I got reasonable doubt when
- 30:16Speaker 4: it came out as a kid because one of the
- 30:18Speaker 4: homies was like, yo, check this out.
- 30:20Speaker 3: This is like a diary of what really goes down.
- 30:24Speaker 3: And I'm like, oh, this is outstanding.
- 30:26Speaker 4: I thought I was like a niche fan club kind
- 30:28Speaker 4: of thing. And then volume one, he blows up. But man,
- 30:31Speaker 4: to see where this thing is now, like all the
- 30:35Speaker 4: Bob Marley likenesses and references and the Basquiat, the way
- 30:43Speaker 4: that he's being photographed these days. I love the fact
- 30:46Speaker 4: that he's gotten older and still doesn't give a shit
- 30:51Speaker 4: about what he doesn't have to give a shit about. Like,
- 30:54Speaker 4: that's what he's telling you in this interview. Like, hey,
- 30:58Speaker 4: you know what it is?
- 30:59Speaker 3: It's the last dance.
- 30:59Speaker 2: Hold on, hold on, hold on.
- 31:01Speaker 1: But he does still give a shit about what we
- 31:03Speaker 1: think of him, which he also doesn't have to think about.
- 31:06Speaker 1: But he's very much concerned with it.
- 31:11Speaker 3: It's the last dance kind of vibe.
- 31:13Speaker 1: Yeah, but so let me run something by you that
- 31:17Speaker 1: hit me the other day.
- 31:19Speaker 2: I saw one of the social media platforms.
- 31:22Speaker 1: Somebody had posted the video of him at the Unplugged
- 31:25Speaker 1: show in, I guess it was 03, doing, 02 or 03,
- 31:30Speaker 1: I can't remember which, but he's doing Takeover, right? And
- 31:33Speaker 1: the roots, you know, putting all the beats, you know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: from the other cats or whatever. And I, it was
- 31:39Speaker 1: the Che Guevara era where he's wearing the Che Guevara
- 31:43Speaker 1: t-shirt and then he gets on the Black Album and
- 31:45Speaker 1: he says, I'm Che Guevara with bling on, I'm complex.
- 31:49Speaker 1: And it's like, brother, and I mean this, Che Guevara
- 31:57Speaker 1: would murder you and tell everybody about it to prove
- 32:02Speaker 1: a point. Like, that's not what this is, right? And
- 32:07Speaker 1: so I bring that up to say, I don't think
- 32:11Speaker 1: he understands critiques of capitalism, right? And where it got
- 32:16Speaker 1: weird for Che in terms of how many people receive him,
- 32:20Speaker 1: obviously not everybody, And I said this around during COVID.
- 32:25Speaker 1: I was like, it's going to be really interesting to
- 32:26Speaker 1: see how we view him now that the idea of
- 32:29Speaker 1: being super rich isn't as popular as it used to be.
- 32:32Speaker 2: And his whole brand is being apex predator capitalist.
- 32:37Speaker 1: The most noble thing about Jay-Z has always been that
- 32:41Speaker 1: he was rich. That was the brand from 1996 on.
- 32:47Speaker 1: He changed the game in rap as he was the
- 32:49Speaker 1: first dude to come out zero to presenting as rich immediately.
- 32:53Speaker 1: Nobody got to present as broke anymore, right? Like, Saul's
- 32:56Speaker 1: about that.
- 32:57Speaker 2: No, no, no. You need to be rich right now.
- 32:59Speaker 2: You need to have all them chains and shit right now.
- 33:01Speaker 4: You couldn't talk about your cherry red Pathfinder like leaders
- 33:04Speaker 4: of the.
- 33:04Speaker 2: New school did.
- 33:05Speaker 7: No, no.
- 33:06Speaker 2: He was like, yo, man, what is that?
- 33:09Speaker 3: You got a 4.0? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You only
- 33:12Speaker 3: driving a $ 100, 000 truck.
- 33:14Speaker 2: 4.0 wasn't good enough, right? Your base model Range Rover. Dude,
- 33:18Speaker 2: I'm over here. What are you talking about, right?
- 33:21Speaker 1: Like, that's the person that he gave, and that's the
- 33:25Speaker 1: person that he presented. And so he doesn't know when
- 33:29Speaker 1: people started hitting back and were like, hey, man, you know,
- 33:31Speaker 1: the idea that anybody could ever have this much money
- 33:34Speaker 1: is actually quite problematic. He can't reconcile that. It's not
- 33:40Speaker 1: the same people fully who praise you for being rich.
- 33:43Speaker 1: He was like, yeah, man, you know, I thought being
- 33:45Speaker 1: a capitalist was good in America. That's not the people
- 33:47Speaker 1: who's talking to you right now about this, but they
- 33:50Speaker 1: are the people.
- 33:51Speaker 2: That you often claim that you speak for.
- 33:55Speaker 1: That are the ones that are like, hey, man, like
- 33:58Speaker 1: maybe you need to give some thought to where you stand,
- 34:02Speaker 1: you know, in this in this here class game.
- 34:05Speaker 2: Maybe you need to consider that.
- 34:07Speaker 1: And so that's a shift that's happened, that it's clear
- 34:10Speaker 1: he still can't. He's like, but I thought you loved
- 34:12Speaker 1: the fact that he's removed from it. and got all
- 34:15Speaker 1: this money yeah yeah yeah he's like no but nobody's
- 34:17Speaker 1: like i'm just doing the same thing that got me
- 34:19Speaker 1: on the cover of time magazine you know again but
- 34:22Speaker 1: that's your argument about him being the system right he's
- 34:25Speaker 1: just like i did and you guys love me for
- 34:27Speaker 1: getting to all these places like what do you what
- 34:29Speaker 1: do you what are you talking about and now all
- 34:30Speaker 1: of a sudden it's a problem and it's like oh
- 34:33Speaker 1: you don't get the arguments at all you just think
- 34:37Speaker 1: that people are hating on you Yeah.
- 34:40Speaker 4: It's always resonated with him too, right? Because he, you know,
- 34:44Speaker 4: I put dollars on my ass Columbine. Like, you talk
- 34:48Speaker 4: about the nobility part.
- 34:50Speaker 3: He... I won't say he presents it, but we.
- 34:54Speaker 4: Find out a lot of what he does behind the scenes.
- 34:58Speaker 3: Similar to Jordan. Similar to Jordan.
- 35:00Speaker 4: Where it's like, hey man, these people don't know what
- 35:03Speaker 4: I actually do outside of telling you how cold I am.
- 35:08Speaker 3: It strikes a tone with him. It strikes a nerve
- 35:10Speaker 3: with him.
- 35:11Speaker 4: Even in this interview where he was talking about Drake
- 35:13Speaker 4: and Kendrick and he's like, people are trying to say
- 35:15Speaker 4: that I'm aligned against Drake.
- 35:17Speaker 3: And he looks at the interviewer and says, I'm motherfucking Jay-Z.
- 35:21Speaker 4: And that was the moment where it flipped from like
- 35:25Speaker 4: you know like sit back humbly stated terrifically outfitted you
- 35:30Speaker 4: know what I mean like Buddha like zen rap figure
- 35:34Speaker 4: to hey but I'm still the man on this block
- 35:38Speaker 4: like there's that dichotomy.
- 35:40Speaker 1: But he seems to understand that he's a man on
- 35:43Speaker 1: that block and on that other block he's just one
- 35:46Speaker 1: of many rich people and the reason that I say
- 35:48Speaker 1: that is this clearly that money only means so much
- 35:53Speaker 1: in terms of power. Because if there were actual power
- 35:56Speaker 1: behind it, he wouldn't be so afraid of saying anything real.
- 36:02Speaker 2: You know what I mean?
- 36:03Speaker 1: Like, he still clearly works to not offend. That's clearly
- 36:10Speaker 1: still on the board and in his thoughts when he
- 36:13Speaker 1: has things to say and to talk about. It's like,
- 36:17Speaker 1: he's not going to say anything that goes that far.
- 36:20Speaker 1: Because again, He's part of that machine.
- 36:23Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 36:25Speaker 1: And so the interview, as far as an interview goes
- 36:29Speaker 1: and it, look, that's a tough interview to do no
- 36:31Speaker 1: matter who you are.
- 36:32Speaker 4: Right.
- 36:32Speaker 2: Like that's Jay. Like you say, that's motherfucking Jay-Z.
- 36:35Speaker 3: Right.
- 36:35Speaker 1: That's Jay-Z who's in front of you. It's clear that
- 36:37Speaker 1: the dude who did the interview was a big Jay-Z fan.
- 36:40Speaker 1: So there was only going to be, but so much
- 36:43Speaker 1: pushback on him. And maybe one could make the argument
- 36:46Speaker 1: that sometimes you let somebody's words speak and express who
- 36:48Speaker 1: they are. And you don't even need to fully double
- 36:53Speaker 1: back on, right? Like, okay, Jay said these things, but
- 36:57Speaker 1: I thought Jay came across as being a bit of
- 37:00Speaker 1: an empty vessel in that interview. And I don't think
- 37:03Speaker 1: that's what he was going for. I think he thought,
- 37:06Speaker 1: like you said, that he was going to hit him with.
- 37:08Speaker 2: Some of that wisdom. But I'm not an idealist. I'm
- 37:12Speaker 2: a realist.
- 37:12Speaker 1: I take the world as it is. That's some really disheartening,
- 37:15Speaker 1: cynical shit right there.
- 37:17Speaker 3: Especially in these times.
- 37:18Speaker 9: Yes.
- 37:19Speaker 3: Right?
- 37:19Speaker 4: Like, especially in these times where people are scraping and scrounging,
- 37:24Speaker 4: you know, health insurance ain't cheap.
- 37:26Speaker 3: Like, life ain't cheap.
- 37:28Speaker 4: Life is as expensive as it has been in God
- 37:31Speaker 4: knows how long. And also, but this is the thing, too.
- 37:35Speaker 4: The audience, though, Bo, right? Like, there is a worldly.
- 37:43Speaker 4: Uh, affect to what JZ has experienced. But I think
- 37:49Speaker 4: the audience that has traveled with him has kind of
- 37:53Speaker 4: always expected him to be the motivational piece or the
- 37:57Speaker 4: tool or the inspiration and looked at him as such,
- 38:00Speaker 4: where it's like, if you, if you listen to dead
- 38:02Speaker 4: prayers or if you listen to, to any, like back
- 38:05Speaker 4: in the day, listening to poor righteous teachers or X clan,
- 38:08Speaker 4: all these things, like the audience that grows with you
- 38:11Speaker 4: is going to always.
- 38:11Speaker 3: See you in that light.
- 38:12Speaker 4: And, and, Maybe not ask anything else of you.
- 38:16Speaker 3: And then when you do hit him with a.
- 38:18Speaker 4: Spare nugget or a piece of what they would deem wisdom,
- 38:21Speaker 4: it's like mind blowing. Whereas everybody else is like, all right,
- 38:24Speaker 4: we got that. But like, how do you feel about this? Like,
- 38:28Speaker 4: I went back and watched the interview that he did
- 38:30Speaker 4: eight years ago with The Times, and he was talking
- 38:32Speaker 4: about what Donald Trump getting elected was. the positives of
- 38:37Speaker 4: that in terms of the discourse and the dialogue that
- 38:40Speaker 4: this country will have. And it blew my mind when
- 38:42Speaker 4: I was sitting there watching it with my wife, because
- 38:44Speaker 4: I'm like, man, I have long thought that anybody outside
- 38:51Speaker 4: of Black people who are like, no, we need this
- 38:53Speaker 4: discourse and dialogue. And I'm like, hey, man, if you
- 38:55Speaker 4: told Black people that all this shit would end today,
- 38:58Speaker 4: if all we did was had to talk, then you
- 39:03Speaker 4: get screamed at because we've been talking. Everybody's just been
- 39:07Speaker 4: talking this whole time. Like, what's the actual actionable items
- 39:10Speaker 4: that can be.
- 39:11Speaker 3: Put in place? And that was the other thing, too.
- 39:13Speaker 3: When he was in the room with Goodell, he mentioned
- 39:16Speaker 3: actionable items. Like, what's next? And it's kind of like
- 39:19Speaker 3: those things where.
- 39:22Speaker 4: There's shootings in schools and people do the thoughts and
- 39:25Speaker 4: prayers and they go, we can't talk about these things.
- 39:28Speaker 4: There are legislation pieces or... policies now because it would
- 39:31Speaker 4: be absurd and it would offend the victims.
- 39:33Speaker 3: And let's not, let's not cover up these heinous.
- 39:36Speaker 4: Crimes with our, with our agendas. But it's like, if
- 39:38Speaker 4: we never get to it, then we never get to it.
- 39:40Speaker 4: It feels like there is a, a, a, a portion
- 39:44Speaker 4: of rap fans and, and a, you know, people who
- 39:47Speaker 4: are our age who are like, all right, but when
- 39:48Speaker 4: are you going to get to what's happening now?
- 39:51Speaker 3: And how are you going to get to it? Through
- 39:53Speaker 3: your music and through your art and through your words.
- 39:55Speaker 3: Like every interview is an album now, right?
- 39:58Speaker 4: Every time you pop up with a content creator, that's
- 40:01Speaker 4: your latest single as opposed to music. So this is
- 40:04Speaker 4: the actual item. This is the time now where you
- 40:06Speaker 4: could be like, all right, eight years ago, I said that.
- 40:08Speaker 4: Now this is what it's become of it. And this
- 40:10Speaker 4: is how I want to change it.
- 40:12Speaker 1: I think where I land ultimately, Hey, man, it's OK
- 40:15Speaker 1: to just.
- 40:16Speaker 3: Be a rapper. 100 percent.
- 40:18Speaker 2: And that's and that and I say that to us. Right.
- 40:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 40:22Speaker 1: Because one thing he does that I do think is interesting,
- 40:24Speaker 1: like when he had the Book of Hope exhibit at
- 40:26Speaker 1: the Brooklyn Museum, the key there is he could have
- 40:29Speaker 1: put that in any museum or like any gallery or
- 40:33Speaker 1: whatever it is, that type of stuff.
- 40:35Speaker 2: But he wanted to put it in a place that's
- 40:36Speaker 2: accessible to the people.
- 40:37Speaker 3: Right.
- 40:38Speaker 2: These concerts at Yankee Stadium, for example. There's always like
- 40:41Speaker 2: an air.
- 40:42Speaker 1: He puts an air of accessibility on like, I'm going
- 40:46Speaker 1: to hit you with this glimpse into the other side
- 40:48Speaker 1: of life, but I'm going to make it to where
- 40:49Speaker 1: you can always get a touch of it, right? Like
- 40:51Speaker 1: he's very good at giving the presentation of accessibility. But
- 40:56Speaker 1: to me, the thing is, it's okay if you're just
- 41:00Speaker 1: real good at rap.
- 41:02Speaker 5: You know?
- 41:02Speaker 2: Because I don't care about him being a very successful
- 41:05Speaker 2: businessman and being rich. Like that just doesn't.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Move you yeah that's not that that doesn't that i
- 41:11Speaker 1: don't know that's just that that's a very good for
- 41:13Speaker 1: you sort of situation i just don't care that much
- 41:16Speaker 1: about that that does not inspire me that does not
- 41:18Speaker 1: motivate me i know it wasn't easy right but it
- 41:22Speaker 1: doesn't do those things okay cool you're that but our
- 41:26Speaker 1: need very often to make jay-z into something bigger than
- 41:30Speaker 1: just a rapper is how we wind up into these
- 41:33Speaker 1: other spaces because if all we do is evaluate him
- 41:35Speaker 1: and the quality of his music it's a very interesting
- 41:37Speaker 1: discussion there's a lot of cool stuff that he's gotten
- 41:40Speaker 1: done and gotten across right he's done that anytime the
- 41:45Speaker 1: moment it tries to go into something bigger it's like
- 41:47Speaker 1: yep no no no no no why don't you just.
- 41:50Speaker 2: Uh get back to rap but I want to wrap.
- 41:53Speaker 3: It with that. Chris Roxley and his next door neighbor
- 41:55Speaker 3: is a dentist, right?
- 41:56Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, man.
- 41:58Speaker 3: He ain't create teeth.
- 42:00Speaker 2: Hey, man, I don't need to talk to Ja Rule.
- 42:02Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying?
- 42:03Speaker 1: Where is Ja? It ain't an issue. I'm going to
- 42:06Speaker 1: make a transition now. There's no smooth way to do this,
- 42:08Speaker 1: but I have something I want to run by you.
- 42:10Speaker 1: It's a story I've been looking at in the news,
- 42:13Speaker 1: and I've been bothered by the story, and I want
- 42:16Speaker 1: to tell you why I'm bothered. I'm curious whether you
- 42:19Speaker 1: feel similar things, and I'm sure that you've seen the story.
- 42:22Speaker 3: I'm glad you got your hands on this one.
- 42:24Speaker 8: Yeah, there's a gentleman. He's accused of murder.
- 42:29Speaker 1: He was in a car with three people and he
- 42:32Speaker 1: was driving the car and he shot a guy in
- 42:35Speaker 1: the passenger seat. Now, the gentleman is a cornhole player.
- 42:41Speaker 1: He is a professional cornhole player. And if you don't know,
- 42:44Speaker 1: cornhole is where they take the beanbags and they throw
- 42:46Speaker 1: them into boards that's got the holes in them.
- 42:49Speaker 3: It's bags, yeah.
- 42:50Speaker 8: Yeah, yeah, yeah. My brother's a big fan. They be
- 42:52Speaker 8: playing it over outside their apartment.
- 42:54Speaker 3: Okay.
- 42:59Speaker 1: But the thing is, the gentleman is a quadruple amputee.
- 43:04Speaker 1: He does not have hands. He does not have, like,
- 43:09Speaker 1: full legs. And he is the one that has been
- 43:13Speaker 1: accused of this murder. Um, and allegedly he, uh, he
- 43:20Speaker 1: asked the people after he shot the dude, he asked
- 43:22Speaker 1: the people in the backseat to help him dispose of
- 43:24Speaker 1: the body.
- 43:24Speaker 8: And they said, no, they would not help him dispose
- 43:26Speaker 8: of the body.
- 43:28Speaker 1: And I watched this report on CBS news and it
- 43:32Speaker 1: was very stern and they were very straight faced as
- 43:34Speaker 1: they was explaining what was going on. It was like,
- 43:36Speaker 1: we have a case in wherever the hell it was.
- 43:38Speaker 1: And they, They put on, they, they strained faces and
- 43:41Speaker 1: they said that he was a quadruple amputee and all
- 43:45Speaker 1: of these things. It took two minutes and then they
- 43:47Speaker 1: broke and then they went to another story. And it's
- 43:52Speaker 1: something that like my brother really conditioned me on this.
- 43:54Speaker 1: And it's very important that I don't like is passive
- 43:57Speaker 1: aggressive behavior, right?
- 43:58Speaker 8: Like if you're going to do the thing, do the thing.
- 44:01Speaker 4: Okay.
- 44:04Speaker 1: These people know good and goddamn well why that story made.
- 44:08Speaker 1: the CBS news, okay? Everywhere that you've seen it, you
- 44:12Speaker 1: know good and well why that story is out here.
- 44:16Speaker 1: This is not news I can use. This is not
- 44:19Speaker 1: information that is important to the world. There are many
- 44:22Speaker 1: murders that take place every day. This is only in
- 44:26Speaker 1: the news because they know that you will hear this
- 44:30Speaker 1: story and you will find it uproarious. That is the
- 44:37Speaker 1: only reason that this news has been presented to the world.
- 44:40Speaker 1: But they don't present it as uproarious. No, because they
- 44:43Speaker 1: too classy. They too dignified, right? No, it's just the facts.
- 44:47Speaker 1: Joe Friday and his motherfucking telling you about how to
- 44:49Speaker 1: do with no hands is out here smoking people. And
- 44:53Speaker 1: by the way, don't even explain to you how exactly
- 44:57Speaker 1: that's possible. Because I know that when you hear that story,
- 44:59Speaker 1: you're like, wait, I don't really understand what you're saying.
- 45:01Speaker 1: He was driving a car and he shot a person? Wait,
- 45:06Speaker 1: how can that happen? They don't tell you none of that.
- 45:09Speaker 1: And they had the ability to tell people this because
- 45:11Speaker 1: Jason put me up on game and I didn't realize this.
- 45:15Speaker 1: It was videos all over the internet of this dude.
- 45:19Speaker 2: Climbing trees and hunting and shooting people.
- 45:22Speaker 3: Climbing trees with a rifle.
- 45:25Speaker 1: Climbing trees with a rifle. They didn't put any of
- 45:28Speaker 1: that on TV because that would have gave the game
- 45:31Speaker 1: away because they wouldn't have been able to make it
- 45:33Speaker 1: to the end of the shot because they would have
- 45:36Speaker 1: been busted out laughing right there on television if they
- 45:40Speaker 1: had done that. And I just think that's messed up
- 45:42Speaker 1: because they throw that out here to the rest of
- 45:44Speaker 1: us and they want us to talk about it.
- 45:46Speaker 2: And I ain't trained in the news like that. I
- 45:49Speaker 2: ain't got straight face practice. You understand what I'm saying?
- 45:52Speaker 1: They think I'm supposed to come out here and talk
- 45:54Speaker 1: about this horrible tragedy that took place where a man
- 45:58Speaker 1: that don't got no hands shot somebody and then was like,
- 46:01Speaker 1: somebody come help me with the body. After those people
- 46:05Speaker 1: said no, did he say, well, fuck it, I'll do
- 46:08Speaker 1: it myself?
- 46:09Speaker 2: I don't know. That's the news that I could use.
- 46:12Speaker 1: If I'm trying to understand what happened with that story.
- 46:16Speaker 1: But no, I'm supposed to put my money on the
- 46:19Speaker 1: line behind this. Y'all betrayed us, journalistically speaking, not giving
- 46:24Speaker 1: us the information that you had that we needed to
- 46:28Speaker 1: draw a full conclusion because you cowards are afraid of
- 46:32Speaker 1: spitting that real and telling the truth. And I got
- 46:35Speaker 1: to come out here and do it with a straight face.
- 46:38Speaker 1: I got to get out here and talk about this. Like,
- 46:41Speaker 1: I don't know why this story is a story.
- 46:45Speaker 2: You know what I'm saying? Jason Goff over there trying
- 46:47Speaker 2: to hold it together. You realize the position that you
- 46:51Speaker 2: put him in? Ryan, put yourself on the screen right now.
- 46:55Speaker 2: Right now. Look what they did.
- 46:59Speaker 3: Look what they're doing to y'all. Look what they're doing.
- 47:01Speaker 2: Bo did this, so hopefully you won't have to go
- 47:04Speaker 2: through this.
- 47:04Speaker 10: You feel me?
- 47:08Speaker 1: I'm keeping this in the road for everybody else, right?
- 47:13Speaker 1: Because they put us here. They know this shit is hilarious.
- 47:19Speaker 2: They know it.
- 47:21Speaker 3: And by the.
- 47:22Speaker 1: Way, it's not anybody's fault that it's hilarious. I was
- 47:28Speaker 1: given this world. I didn't make it to quote a
- 47:33Speaker 1: great rapper.
- 47:34Speaker 2: I'm not an idealist.
- 47:35Speaker 3: I'm a realist.
- 47:37Speaker 2: I take the world.
- 47:38Speaker 4: As it is.
- 47:40Speaker 11: It'd be so dope if he had American gangster playing
- 47:42Speaker 11: in the tape deck. It'd be so dope. So this
- 47:48Speaker 11: is one of those things. First of all, this is
- 47:50Speaker 11: one of those things where, like, your news homies, like,
- 47:52Speaker 11: sports is the.
- 47:53Speaker 3: Toy department, right?
- 47:54Speaker 4: This is, like, one of those things where your news
- 47:56Speaker 4: homies just slide a little something to you, like, take
- 47:58Speaker 4: a look at that play and tell me what you
- 48:00Speaker 4: think I can do with this, right? That story, first
- 48:04Speaker 4: of all, I caught that story in the devil's lair,
- 48:07Speaker 4: the devil's cauldron, which is the for you.
- 48:09Speaker 3: Tab on X, right?
- 48:11Speaker 4: It's not like the for you tab for me is like,
- 48:14Speaker 4: you know, you go on by the old coffee shop
- 48:17Speaker 4: and you're like, oh, I have a little this, little this,
- 48:20Speaker 4: little this. Don't tell nobody I had any of this.
- 48:22Speaker 4: Let's keep it moving.
- 48:23Speaker 10: So it started to trickle out, right? The positioning, how
- 48:28Speaker 10: the guy was actually.
- 48:29Speaker 3: Thoughts and prayers to that person. Absolutely.
- 48:32Speaker 4: Right?
- 48:33Speaker 10: But I immediately, when I read this, the headline, because
- 48:37Speaker 10: it said, quadruple amputee murder, right?
- 48:41Speaker 3: So I'm like... Headbutt is a hell of a way
- 48:43Speaker 3: to go, right? Like, immediately.
- 48:46Speaker 2: It was a fair point.
- 48:48Speaker 3: Duh. You know, come on, man. We grew up in
- 48:52Speaker 3: the 80s where you had to have an imagination as
- 48:55Speaker 3: a kid, right? Wasn't all these goddamn screens. We had
- 48:58Speaker 3: to fight.
- 48:58Speaker 1: You say he out here playing Goldeneye.
- 49:01Speaker 3: Let me tell you.
- 49:02Speaker 2: And he ain't got no gat.
- 49:04Speaker 3: None. Guess what's harder to my head? Nothing. Bang. You out.
- 49:10Speaker 4: I thought that's how it went. Then I come to
- 49:12Speaker 4: find out he got folks in the backseat.
- 49:15Speaker 2: In the backseat?
- 49:17Speaker 4: And I don't know how much of a gangster or
- 49:21Speaker 4: a punk you either got to be to look at
- 49:24Speaker 4: a quadruple amputee in the driver's seat and be like,
- 49:29Speaker 4: and see him murder someone and be like, I ain't
- 49:31Speaker 4: helping you with shit.
- 49:32Speaker 2: Do you know how capable this man is?
- 49:37Speaker 4: Do you know if this man, you know, first of all,
- 49:40Speaker 4: his name is Dewey, right? You know they call him
- 49:43Speaker 4: Dewdrop in the hood, right? So you know that Dewdrop,
- 49:47Speaker 4: if he climbing trees with rifles, what make you think
- 49:51Speaker 4: he won't pull up in the most innocuous way and
- 49:55Speaker 4: knock you out?
- 49:56Speaker 3: This is his homie that he knocked off, too.
- 49:58Speaker 4: That's the other thing. At first, I'm like, man, they
- 50:02Speaker 4: putting this on Dewdrop. Dewdrop was in the backseat.
- 50:05Speaker 2: We'll hear how you know he was gangster.
- 50:08Speaker 1: How he be like, yo, I'll drive.
- 50:13Speaker 2: That's how you know he run things.
- 50:15Speaker 3: There's the other thing. What if Doudrop is the DD? Right? Ah.
- 50:22Speaker 3: And everybody a little soft up. Everybody kicking it. And
- 50:25Speaker 3: Doudrop pull up mad. You know? Right? Obviously. Y'all done
- 50:31Speaker 3: kicked it. What's going on? Everybody get in the car.
- 50:34Speaker 3: One guy talk. We saw it in Dead Presidents.
- 50:36Speaker 8: We saw him.
- 50:38Speaker 3: He took his leg off. Still got that work on
- 50:40Speaker 3: the ground. Like, I'm sorry, brother.
- 50:42Speaker 4: And shout out to my man Mike B from Tampa
- 50:44Speaker 4: because I put it in my group chat. Sometimes I
- 50:47Speaker 4: just put things in my group chat to see it
- 50:49Speaker 4: explode and then come back eight hours later to see.
- 50:51Speaker 4: First thing my man Mike B said, and I'm with him. Hey,
- 50:54Speaker 4: cats like this, front lines.
- 50:58Speaker 3: Front lines. You feel me?
- 51:01Speaker 4: Listen, you can either go to jail or we got
- 51:05Speaker 4: some things that need handling overseas.
- 51:07Speaker 8: I'm sorry.
- 51:09Speaker 3: You put dewdrop anywhere. And you talk like, if.
- 51:14Speaker 4: Denzel Washington could run around a Lowe's for six hours
- 51:18Speaker 4: in two movies and kill people.
- 51:20Speaker 3: man, shout out to Dewey. I have never, I've never
- 51:24Speaker 3: shouted out a murder.
- 51:25Speaker 4: Well, I probably have, but I've never shouted out a
- 51:27Speaker 4: murderer in this way.
- 51:29Speaker 3: That story, everybody knew what it was.
- 51:31Speaker 4: The moment they saw it, like you said, everybody was
- 51:33Speaker 4: laughing immediately. Shout out to all the real journalists out
- 51:36Speaker 4: there who had to actually deliver this with a straight face.
- 51:40Speaker 3: No, no, no, no, no, no.
- 51:41Speaker 2: Cause they, they, they was passing the buck. They, they left,
- 51:46Speaker 2: they left out important stuff.
- 51:49Speaker 3: But the things like murder, it's serious. It's out for
- 51:54Speaker 3: them in a way. You know what I mean?
- 51:56Speaker 2: They could have told us more, but they was afraid.
- 51:59Speaker 1: You know what else? Well, they kind of told us this.
- 52:02Speaker 1: This has been lost in it, by the way. Rest
- 52:05Speaker 1: in peace to the victim. Our buddy Dayton Weber, a.k.a. Dewey,
- 52:08Speaker 1: he going through it. Because I had seen that the
- 52:11Speaker 1: murder victim's name was Bradrick. And they showed a picture.
- 52:16Speaker 1: And I didn't think it was Dewey because it was
- 52:18Speaker 1: next to a picture. It was a picture of Dewey
- 52:19Speaker 1: and competition. And then it was a picture of Dewey now.
- 52:22Speaker 1: And I thought they was two different people. And so
- 52:24Speaker 1: I thought the second picture was the picture of the victim.
- 52:28Speaker 1: And I was like, damn, white Bradrick. Hate it had
- 52:31Speaker 1: to be you.
- 52:32Speaker 2: But it turns out Bradrick is actually African-American.
- 52:36Speaker 3: Yeah. Yeah.
- 52:38Speaker 4: And this is, you know, so how can I put this?
- 52:44Speaker 4: Your friend group can be as eclectic as you would
- 52:46Speaker 4: like it to be. You know, it could have people
- 52:50Speaker 4: from various backgrounds. If I'm the brother and I'm pulling
- 52:54Speaker 4: up with not only a quadruple amputee, but a famous one. Like,
- 53:00Speaker 4: the first thing I saw, this was attached and people
- 53:02Speaker 4: quote tweeted it because of the ESPN story that ran
- 53:06Speaker 4: about this man.
- 53:07Speaker 2: Right?
- 53:08Speaker 4: Like, the ESPN investigative, like, you know, special report, like,
- 53:12Speaker 4: look at what this young man.
- 53:13Speaker 3: Has gone through and look at how he has achieved. Man, hey.
- 53:20Speaker 3: I guess that's why I keep my circle small, man.
- 53:22Speaker 4: Because at some point, you know Doudrop going to go off.
- 53:27Speaker 3: You know he got these skills. He not only is
- 53:30Speaker 3: a world-renowned bags player, but he is a hunter. Come on, dawg.
- 53:34Speaker 3: Come on, dawg.
- 53:35Speaker 1: Do you have any clue what I had to do
- 53:37Speaker 1: to get here? I don't think you do, ladies and gentlemen.
- 53:41Speaker 1: That is Jason Goff. Check him out on The Athletic.
- 53:46Speaker 1: Catch him in Chicago.
- 53:48Speaker 8: You know what I'm saying? My brother, I appreciate you.
- 53:51Speaker 4: I appreciate you as always. And I'll leave you with this, brother.
- 53:57Speaker 4: In the great words of Sugar Free, you know, you
- 54:00Speaker 4: got the same amount of time in the day as
- 54:03Speaker 4: Dayton Weber. Don't choose to be nobody.
