- 0:27Hey everybody, good morning from the chicken coop.
- 0:30So today we are talking about are we allowed to disagree
- 0:34anymore? I think this is a very
- 0:36interesting subject given the time of the year we are in as
- 0:40well as I mean it doesn't matter if it you're talking politics,
- 0:44public stuff, just in general in your personal life.
- 0:48Are we allowed to disagree anymore and still be OK with
- 0:51each other? And so some interesting things
- 0:54are available to us. Let's just put it that way when
- 0:58we start to get into this subject because so many people
- 1:01feel as though we cannot be friends.
- 1:04We cannot, you know, know each other if we completely disagree,
- 1:07if our politics are different, if our spiritual beliefs are
- 1:10different. Recently I had to take do a
- 1:12questionnaire, take a survey. And on it there were lots of
- 1:17questions about this. And this is what got me thinking
- 1:19about it. So it was almost as if the
- 1:24questionnaire was geared towards recognizing that the people
- 1:30taking it were not able to work together personally or
- 1:35professionally because they actually disagreed so much.
- 1:40And I take an absolutely opposite stance to this.
- 1:43I I believe that when you have people that disagree with you,
- 1:47there's gifts in that, not just small ones, but possibly big
- 1:51ones, because they force you to look at things differently.
- 1:54And then you have to decide, well, have I been wrong all
- 1:56along? Have I been marginally correct?
- 1:59How is there space for all of us to agree to disagree?
- 2:03And that phrase agree to disagree is something that I
- 2:06grew up with because my parents were very different people and
- 2:09they loved each other, but they agreed to disagree.
- 2:12And there was no ambiguity in that on many things.
- 2:16You know, my mother was very oriented to go to church all the
- 2:19time. My dad was not oriented for
- 2:21that. He had grown up in a house where
- 2:23he was taken to church, but he didn't.
- 2:26He just didn't like the church, the process.
- 2:28He wouldn't talk about it. Who knows what it was because it
- 2:31happened so long ago. And he's passed away many, many
- 2:35years ago, so I can't go back and ask him.
- 2:37But what I do know is they agreed to disagree.
- 2:40He didn't care if she took me. He didn't care if my grandmother
- 2:45took me. It was more of a, OK, that's
- 2:48fine. I don't, I don't agree with you,
- 2:50but you do what you, you need to do.
- 2:53And that was across the board. My mother didn't agree with
- 2:56certain things that I did, but she was like, fine, you do that.
- 3:00And I think we have forgotten that.
- 3:04That's an important aspect. Now there, I'll be the first one
- 3:06to admit there are many things that I do not agree in the same
- 3:11space with my husband. He likes to watch certain things
- 3:14that I absolutely do not entertain in my headspace.
- 3:19You know, it's just anything political.
- 3:22Just drives me insane because everything is a spin in my head.
- 3:27You know, you can tell somebody, you can give somebody
- 3:30percentages and make things look a certain way, but you don't
- 3:33really know hard numbers. You don't know certain things.
- 3:35And the spins always bother me. So I'm just like, Nope, I'm out
- 3:39because I don't feel like I'm given all of the information.
- 3:42So he loves to hear all that stuff.
- 3:45I just don't. And I think that's the case in a
- 3:47lot of couples. However, those couples are
- 3:50made-up. There's one person that wants
- 3:53more information and there's one person that wants less
- 3:55information. And often times it causes
- 3:58issues. But here's the thing, if we all
- 4:02agree to disagree and we make space for each other, then does
- 4:06it really make a difference? It only makes a difference when
- 4:09it crosses a line and starts impeding upon the other person.
- 4:13So in other words, if I took my situation with him watching
- 4:17political things and he decided to watch those in common space
- 4:21where I had to hear them, then that would be no good for me.
- 4:25I would be like very, very resistant to that and I would
- 4:28push back big time because it takes up.
- 4:32But if it doesn't, does it matter if he puts a headset on
- 4:36and he just goes ahead and puts a headset on?
- 4:38Doesn't make a difference, does it?
- 4:41O OK, he can do that and I don't have a problem and I say that
- 4:45you want to watch it fine just put a headset on South.
- 4:47I don't have to hear it and it limits the exposure.
- 4:50O my point is when we make a decision to say we agree to
- 4:55disagree or we go at something like that, we're saying, I'm
- 4:58making space for you to believe what you believe as well.
- 5:02And it's not just about going along to get along and somebody
- 5:06acquiescing. It's about having real
- 5:09agreements on boundaries and saying, OK, this is how we're
- 5:12going to do it. But we also know we're not
- 5:14trying to change the other person in the process.
- 5:17It's just not going to happen and we're not going to do it.
- 5:19We're not going to change the other person in the process.
- 5:22All we're going to do is let it go and move on.
- 5:24Does that make sense? Because when you do that, all of
- 5:27a sudden everything changes. So hopefully this is helpful, my
- 5:32friends. And I hope you have a blessed
- 5:33day and I'll see you tomorrow. Bye.
