- 0:00Facts don't change behavior. Stories do.
- 0:03You can show someone a
- 0:04graph of declining fish stocks.
- 0:06And they might nod and be
- 0:08like, "Okay, that's great."
- 0:10But when you tell them
- 0:11a story about a fisher
- 0:12who can no longer feed their
- 0:14family, it suddenly matters.
- 0:17And if you want people
- 0:18to protect the ocean,
- 0:20we need to stop informing people and
- 0:23start moving people.
- 0:26If you care about protecting the oceans
- 0:28and want to understand more about what
- 0:30actually works in protecting that ocean,
- 0:33follow How to Protect the Ocean podcast
- 0:34wherever you listen to podcasts
- 0:37and share the episode with someone who
- 0:39you think needs to hear it.
- 0:41This is the How to Protect the Ocean
- 0:43podcast where we turn ocean science
- 0:45into stories that actually drive action.
- 0:49For years, conservation messaging has
- 0:51focused on crisis, collapse, urgency.
- 0:55And those things are real. Like, let's be
- 0:57honest, they are real.
- 0:59We are seeing coral
- 1:00bleaching on global scales.
- 1:02We have fisheries pushed to their limits.
- 1:05Plastic pollution in every ocean basin at
- 1:07every depth of the ocean.
- 1:10But here's the problem. When people are
- 1:12constantly exposed to negative,
- 1:14overwhelming information,
- 1:15they don't act. Quick story. When I was
- 1:18first introduced to CrossFit,
- 1:20I joined a gym. And it was
- 1:21great. I met a lot of people.
- 1:23And you know, CrossFit is a bit of a cult
- 1:25in that you make friends and you go out
- 1:26and you eat and
- 1:27somewhat healthy or someone
- 1:28not healthy, depending on the gym and
- 1:30depending on if you're going
- 1:31out to blow off some steam.
- 1:33But we went out to a dinner and I was
- 1:35with a bunch of people in my and I was
- 1:36doing YouTube videos at the time.
- 1:38This is early on in my science
- 1:39communication career. And my gym owner at
- 1:44the time was like, hey,
- 1:45Andrew, I've been watching
- 1:45your videos. They're great.
- 1:47But I had to stop at watching them
- 1:48because they were depressing me because
- 1:49they just showed so much
- 1:51so much like doom and gloom.
- 1:53And that really made me think about how I
- 1:56need to change the way I tell the stories
- 1:59to provide optimism in the stories.
- 2:02Now, that's not just the first story.
- 2:04When I went to the IMCC, International
- 2:05Marine Conservation
- 2:06Congress in 2014 in Newfoundland,
- 2:10there were a lot of people that were
- 2:10talking about optimism and how ocean
- 2:13optimism actually matters
- 2:14when it comes to conservation.
- 2:17So people, when they hear the doom and
- 2:18gloom, they disengage. People feel
- 2:20powerless. They feel guilty. They feel
- 2:21unsure where to start.
- 2:24So instead of acting, they just kind of
- 2:26scroll past. So what actually works?
- 2:29Let's take a look at some examples.
- 2:31The United Nation Development Program
- 2:33tried something different. They created a
- 2:36campaign with a talking dinosaur.
- 2:38The message? You have a choice. Don't
- 2:41choose extinction. It was funny,
- 2:43unexpected and shareable.
- 2:45And it reached millions of people.
- 2:49Organizations like Sea Legacy took
- 2:50another approach. They
- 2:52don't just show data.
- 2:53They show a whale looking directly at the
- 2:56camera, a reef before and after
- 2:58bleaching, a shark as a
- 3:00vital part of the ecosystem.
- 3:03They create emotional connection to the
- 3:05ocean because people protect what they
- 3:08care about and they
- 3:09care about what they feel.
- 3:11In Randy Olson's book, Don't Be Such a
- 3:14Scientist, it's one of the first books I
- 3:15read on science communication.
- 3:17And when I read it, you know, he talked
- 3:19about how scientists talk to the brain
- 3:21and we talk with numbers and
- 3:23we talk with graphs and we say,
- 3:25hey, here's the logic behind what we're
- 3:27doing to the earth. If you if I give you
- 3:29that logic, if I speak to your brain,
- 3:31that logic will tell you,
- 3:33hey, we need to change our behavior. But
- 3:34that's not always the case. We know
- 3:36that's not the case.
- 3:37He says to speak to their gut because
- 3:39that's where the emotions are. They sit
- 3:41in your gut, whether it's funny, whether
- 3:44it's sad, whether it's anger.
- 3:46That's where your emotions sit. So speak
- 3:48to the gut and you will actually be able
- 3:50to move people to change their behavior.
- 3:53So let's just make this real. Here are
- 3:55two ways to communicate the same issue.
- 3:57Version one, 90% of large predatory fish
- 4:01are gone. Version two, a fisherman now
- 4:04travels twice as far for half the catch
- 4:07his father once brought home.
- 4:09Same issue, very different impact. If
- 4:13your message doesn't connect, it won't
- 4:15spread. And if it doesn't
- 4:16spread, it won't matter.
- 4:18Here's the truth. People are not lacking
- 4:21information. They are lacking connection.
- 4:24Storytelling is what turns
- 4:26science and understanding.
- 4:29Understanding into emotion, emotion into
- 4:31action. If you are communicating to the
- 4:34ocean, know your audience, speak their
- 4:37language and connect to their values.
- 4:39And most importantly, make the audience
- 4:41the hero of the story because people act
- 4:45when they see themselves in the solution.
- 4:49There are a lot of scientists and
- 4:52conservationists of all ages that are
- 4:55using social media as a way of
- 4:57communicating the
- 4:58work that they are doing,
- 5:00whether it's different jobs, whether it's
- 5:02traveling and volunteering at different
- 5:05organizations as they travel or whether
- 5:07they're showing what they're doing in
- 5:08their research and their graduate
- 5:09programs or even the research they do at
- 5:11their jobs, which is wonderful.
- 5:13You get great visuals on TikTok, on
- 5:15Instagram, on even YouTube if they're
- 5:17going that far. And it's a great way to
- 5:20show what marine biologists do.
- 5:22The key now for many of those people who
- 5:25are actually telling those stories is to
- 5:28really understand how storytelling works.
- 5:31You know, make sure, like I said before,
- 5:33you put the audience as the hero. What is
- 5:36their thing that they need to do? You are
- 5:38the guide. They are the hero.
- 5:40How are you going to help them make that
- 5:43change in behavior? What do they need to
- 5:45do? What's their problem? How do they
- 5:47speak that problem?
- 5:47How do they communicate?
- 5:48How do they listen and what they need to
- 5:50do to change their behavior and what's
- 5:51going to help them change their behavior?
- 5:53What impact can they put on and what
- 5:55benefit can they get when
- 5:56they put on that impact?
- 5:58That's what we've been talking about
- 6:00today. We're going to be
- 6:00talking about it again.
- 6:03And there's a big announcement that I
- 6:04have soon enough that if you're watching
- 6:07on my socials, you'll probably see it.
- 6:09But it's a lot of fun. I can't wait to
- 6:10share that with you. It's about
- 6:12storytelling. It's about science
- 6:14communication. It's going to be great.
- 6:14But until then, if you are interested in
- 6:19listening about the ocean, about the
- 6:21solutions, about the problems and what
- 6:23solutions can scale to help, you know,
- 6:25find those solutions to
- 6:26help enact those solutions.
- 6:29Why don't you just follow this podcast
- 6:30and don't miss the next episode because
- 6:33we're going to be talking
- 6:34to Peter Sinek from EarthX.
- 6:36He's the CEO of EarthX and he's going to
- 6:37be talking about a conference that
- 6:39they're putting on April 20th to the
- 6:4122nd, 2026 where they are going to be
- 6:43having 20 conferences in one.
- 6:45So if you know anything about the ocean
- 6:46or interested in any part of the ocean or
- 6:48earth and protection and conservation and
- 6:50business and solutions, you're going to
- 6:52want to attend this conference.
- 6:54I talk about the conference and the
- 6:55impact it's had on the past businesses.
- 6:57Some of them we talked about this week,
- 7:00but we're going to talk
- 7:00more about it tomorrow.
- 7:01So tune in and follow this podcast so
- 7:05that you can make sure you tune in.
- 7:06And if you have any questions or
- 7:07comments, let me know in the comments.
- 7:09If you are on Spotify,
- 7:10let me know in the comments.
- 7:11If you want to give me feedback, speak up
- 7:13for blue dot com forward slash feedback.
- 7:15I'm going to be putting out a survey soon
- 7:17for all those of you who are learning
- 7:19from this new structure that I have.
- 7:22So I'd love to hear from you on that.
- 7:25Keep an eye out for that
- 7:26soon in a couple of weeks.
- 7:27I'll probably have it ready.
- 7:28Thank you so much for listening to this
- 7:29episode of the how to
- 7:30protect the ocean podcast.
- 7:31I'm your host, Andrew Lohan.
- 7:33Have a great day.
- 7:33We'll talk to you next
- 7:34time and happy conservation.
