- 0:00Our minds can be confused or manipulated.
- 0:04We can misinterpret what we see or hear or feel.
- 0:08Our vital nature can be LED astray by the promptings of
- 0:11various vital reactions, including desire, lust, anger,
- 0:16as well as feelings the external nature considers positive as
- 0:21well as negative. Our physical being can be lulled
- 0:25into complacency by comfort, having its hunger and thirst and
- 0:29other basic needs met. Our external ego personality can
- 0:34be misled through appeals to vanity, to the appearances, to
- 0:38status. All of these things wind up
- 0:42distorting our understanding of what is true and what is false.
- 0:48They lead to mistakes in understanding, judgment and
- 0:52action. They are mutable, subject to
- 0:55change as we age, As we undergo the changes that take place in
- 1:01the external life, we find the distortions compounding and at
- 1:06the same time creating a rigid framework that is unwilling or
- 1:10unable to break out of the wall of falsehood that we have built
- 1:14through a lifetime of reactions. We thus tend to address our
- 1:19changing circumstances with a fixed and rigid view built up
- 1:23through the habits of a lifetime, the expectations built
- 1:27up through our training, education, and the expectations
- 1:32of our social setting. The soul is of another character
- 1:37as the spark of the Divine. The soul knows the truth of our
- 1:41existence not by the slow process of fact gathering,
- 1:46sorting, comparison and analysis, but by virtue of the
- 1:51fact that it is itself identified with the truth of
- 1:55existence. The vibrations it receives
- 1:59either resonate with that truth or not.
- 2:02It thus immediately knows when something false has been
- 2:06presented to it, just as it knows when the resonance
- 2:10conforms to the truth of existence.
- 2:14The soul is not insistent as it knows that the development of
- 2:18the body, life and mind, the ego, personality and the
- 2:23maturation process that takes place needs time and freedom.
- 2:28It knows and does not generally impose itself until the being
- 2:33itself calls for the truth, Trigurobindo writes quote at the
- 2:41beginning. The soul in nature, the psychic
- 2:44entity whose unfolding is the first step towards a spiritual
- 2:48change, is an entirely veiled part of us, although it is that
- 2:54by which we exist and persist as individual beings in nature.
- 3:00The other parts of our natural composition are not only mutable
- 3:04but perishable. But the psychic entity in US
- 3:07persists and is fundamentally the same always.
- 3:11It contains all essential possibilities of our
- 3:15manifestation, but is not constituted by them.
- 3:19It is not limited by what it manifests, not contained by the
- 3:23incomplete forms of the manifestation, not tarnished by
- 3:28the imperfections and impurities, the defects and
- 3:32deprivations of the surface being.
- 3:35It is an ever pure flame of the divinity in things, and nothing
- 3:40that comes to it, nothing that enters into our experience, can
- 3:44pollute its purity or extinguish the flame.
- 3:48This spiritual stuff is Immaculate and luminous, and
- 3:53because it is perfectly luminous, it is immediately,
- 3:57intimately, directly aware of truth of being and truth of
- 4:02nature. It is deeply conscious of truth
- 4:05and good and beauty, because truth and good and beauty are
- 4:09akin to its own native character forms of something that is
- 4:14inherent in its own substance. It is aware also of all that
- 4:18contradicts these things, of all that deviates from its own
- 4:23native character of falsehood and evil and the ugly and the
- 4:27unseemly. But it does not become those
- 4:30things, nor is it touched or changed by these opposites of
- 4:34itself which so powerfully affect its outer instrumentation
- 4:38of mind, life, and body. For the soul, the permanent
- 4:42being us puts forth and uses mind, life and body as its
- 4:48instruments, undergoes the envelopment of their conditions,
- 4:53but is other and greater than its members.
