Transcript
- 0:00Hello and welcome to the Letterbox podcast, the podcast
- 0:04that proves that everyone has a story to tell, one letter at a
- 0:08time. Every episode I read a letter
- 0:11sent in by one of you. They can be about anything,
- 0:14anyone, a moment that changed a life.
- 0:18Some assigned and some are anonymous, but every single one
- 0:24is real. Today's letter was sent in by
- 0:28someone who wants to remain anonymous, but she did say I
- 0:32could share the following details with you.
- 0:35She's a 31 year old woman living in Canada.
- 0:39She lives a life that to many sounds enviable and she says
- 0:42she's happy. However, she dreams of something
- 0:46different and that's where this letter comes in because she's
- 0:50writing a letter to her boyfriend, someone she loves,
- 0:55someone she's been best friends with for many many years and has
- 0:58known long before they got into a relationship.
- 1:01She says the relationship is 1 she is happy in but knows that
- 1:05maybe they're no longer meant for each other.
- 1:08Before I read you this letter today, if you've been enjoying
- 1:11the podcast, please do press the follow button.
- 1:14Share an episode with someone who you think is going to enjoy
- 1:16as well. You guys are doing an amazing
- 1:20job at spreading these letters all across the world.
- 1:24So thank you so much and please keep doing that.
- 1:30Like I said earlier, remember these letters are real.
- 1:34And Please remember to be kind. These letters just give us a
- 1:37little snippet into someone's life.
- 1:39We don't get the full story. And having spoken with her, she
- 1:43knows she's not the only person who's in a relationship where
- 1:46love hasn't faded, but maybe they've just grown apart.
- 1:52So here it is, the boy I'm about to break up with.
- 1:59I've been writing this letter in my head for longer than you'll
- 2:02ever know, because I don't know exactly what I want to say.
- 2:08Every time I think I've found the words, I immediately start
- 2:12trying to unsay them. Writing this feels like a
- 2:16rehearsal, a way of seeing whether I can survive the
- 2:20sentence before I ever have to say it to your face.
- 2:26I'm so, so sorry, and not because I've made-up my mind,
- 2:36but because I know I've been standing with one foot in this
- 2:38relationship and 1 foot outside for longer than either of us
- 2:42deserves. You probably think everything's
- 2:47OK. If one of your friends asked you
- 2:50about us today, I imagine you'd smile and say you've never been
- 2:54happier. The strange thing is, I'd
- 3:00probably say the exact same. That's what makes this so
- 3:06difficult. You haven't become someone
- 3:09different, and neither have I. We talk about the future all the
- 3:16time. Well, at least you start the
- 3:20conversations about it, and I go along with them.
- 3:24From the outside, we probably look like we're the people
- 3:27who've got it figured out. But every now and then a thought
- 3:33appears that I can't seem to put back where I found it.
- 3:37It usually pops up when we're talking about the future.
- 3:41You'll say something about buying a house, or where the
- 3:44children's bedrooms could be, or what age you'd like to be.
- 3:46When you finally settle down, I'll smile.
- 3:51I'll join in. I remember when you sent me that
- 3:56house with the little reading nook and said I can already.
- 3:58I can already picture you sitting there.
- 4:02I told you I loved it. The truth is, all I could think
- 4:09about was whether I'd ever be ready to live in it when I was
- 4:13on my own. Later that day I realised I'd
- 4:14been picturing a completely different life.
- 4:18It's not that my idea is a better one, just different.
- 4:24I want to disappear for months with nothing booked except a
- 4:28flight. I want to wake up somewhere I've
- 4:31never been before and decide what the day looks like over
- 4:34coffee. I want to climb mountains at
- 4:37sunrise, learn to scuba dive, live abroad for a while and
- 4:41build a collection of exciting memories.
- 4:45Not flat pack furniture. I'd love for you to be standing
- 4:51beside me whilst I did it all because I know you'd really love
- 4:55all those things too. But we've had those
- 4:59conversations. You don't want that.
- 5:05Maybe for a holiday, but not for your life.
- 5:10You want to be somewhere that feels permanent.
- 5:12You want to know what your next year looks like.
- 5:16You want a family and a big one, and I know that I don't.
- 5:25Every time we've spoken about it, neither of us has tried to
- 5:28change the other's minds. We just smile, kiss each other
- 5:32and carry on as though wanting different things is just part of
- 5:36us being yin and Yang. Everyone's always said we work
- 5:41because opposites attract, and I believe that we absolutely did.
- 5:47Maybe we still do, but I worry that isn't enough anymore.
- 5:54I think we've both been telling ourselves for too long that
- 5:57it'll eventually solve itself, That one day I'll wake up
- 6:02wanting the same things you do, that I'll be ready to put down
- 6:06roots and stay still. I've waited for that feeling
- 6:15too. I promise you I have.
- 6:16But it just hasn't come. This isn't about another person,
- 6:24by the way. I promise you that there isn't
- 6:26one. You're the one who makes me
- 6:29happy. You're my best friend.
- 6:30I love you. That's what makes this so hard.
- 6:36Because every time I picture choosing the life I want, I also
- 6:41picture asking you to give up yours.
- 6:44And every time I picture choosing yours, there's a part
- 6:47of me that wonders how long it would be before I started
- 6:50mourning the one I never lived. Neither of us deserves that.
- 6:58Least of all. You make it.
- 7:03You're the greatest person I've ever met.
- 7:09I mean that you never told me my dreams were unrealistic.
- 7:13You simply hope that one day they'd look a little more like
- 7:16yours. And I hoped that too.
- 7:21I really did. Maybe that's why I've stayed so
- 7:27long inside this conversation instead of having it.
- 7:32I've been waiting to wake up 1 morning relieved that I don't
- 7:36want those things anymore. It hasn't happened.
- 7:44Wish this letter was angry. I wish I could point to 1 moment
- 7:49and say that's when everything changed.
- 7:53Instead it's just a steady stream of lovely ordinary days.
- 8:02And they leave me with the same question.
- 8:07Are we choosing each other, or are we choosing to avoid the
- 8:13fear of hurting each other? And that really scares me.
- 8:26I know, by the way, that people are going to judge me for not
- 8:30doing this sooner, if I managed to do it at all.
- 8:35They'll say I've been unfair, that I've strung you along.
- 8:39And maybe they're right. That's OK, because there isn't a
- 8:45single thing they'll say about me that I haven't already said
- 8:49to myself. I hate that I'm going to hurt
- 8:55you. I hate knowing you're going to
- 8:58be heartbroken. I'm devastated too.
- 9:04I don't want you to think this has been easy.
- 9:08It hasn't. I love you more than anyone.
- 9:11I don't want a life where you aren't in it.
- 9:13But I know I don't get to choose that once I finally say these
- 9:17words out loud. You deserve the truth sooner,
- 9:24and I'm sorry it took me this long to find the courage to give
- 9:27it to you. I love you always.
- 9:37And there it is, our letter for today.
- 9:41I've kept in contact with this girl and we've had a few back
- 9:44and forths and she told me that last week they did have a
- 9:47conversation. So thank you to our letter
- 9:53writer for today because I know that there will be people
- 9:58listening who too have stayed in relationships far too long for
- 10:02fear of hurting the other person.
- 10:04So once again, if you have enjoyed this podcast today,
- 10:08please do make sure you're pressing the follow button.
- 10:11And remember, if you've got a story you want to share, you can
