- 0:25Speaker 2: going on well.
- 0:26Speaker 3: I have a secret involving my best friend and i'm
- 0:30Speaker 3: She's got a lot going on in her life right now,
- 0:31Speaker 3: and I'm just kind of struggling with if I did
- 0:34Speaker 3: the right thing or not.
- 0:35Speaker 2: Okay, what'd you do?
- 0:36Speaker 3: Well, she's been really struggling with the fact that she
- 0:41Speaker 3: isn't able to have children. Eventually, she and her husband,
- 0:46Speaker 3: they decided they wanted to adopt, but the problem was
- 0:49Speaker 3: her husband was just a complete a * * hole.
- 0:52Speaker 1: Oh, really?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Her husband was? So he was not the best guy?
- 0:57Speaker 3: Not at all. Like, none of us ever approved of him. Really?
- 1:01Speaker 2: Okay.
- 1:02Speaker 3: Right. I mean, but you would never know it, meeting him. Like,
- 1:05Speaker 3: he's one of those guys, like, everybody in his little
- 1:08Speaker 3: friend circle, everybody loves him. And, you know, great career,
- 1:11Speaker 3: great family, charming, all that. But behind closed doors, like...
- 1:15Speaker 3: He's a completely different person. He's a womanizer, verbally abusive
- 1:19Speaker 3: to her and just their relationship always been kind of
- 1:23Speaker 3: on the verge of falling apart. And she just genuinely
- 1:26Speaker 3: like believed that adopting a baby with him might bring
- 1:30Speaker 3: them closer together.
- 1:31Speaker 2: That's pretty common. I mean, not as far as adopting,
- 1:34Speaker 2: but like if we have a kid that'll fix things
- 1:37Speaker 2: in this case, if they adopt. So did they, or what, what,
- 1:40Speaker 2: how to go down?
- 1:41Speaker 3: They started the process of it. Um, So like one day,
- 1:45Speaker 3: completely unexpectedly, I got a phone call from a woman
- 1:49Speaker 3: checking their references that they had to put down for
- 1:51Speaker 3: the adoption application. And at first I'm saying, you know,
- 1:56Speaker 3: all the things you expect. She's an amazing mother. She
- 1:58Speaker 3: would be an amazing mother. And then something inside me
- 2:01Speaker 3: just stopped. And I just remember thinking, like, I am
- 2:06Speaker 3: lying to this person right now.
- 2:08Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:10Speaker 3: And just, it was just killing me. And the woman
- 2:12Speaker 3: was asking me whether I believed a child should be
- 2:15Speaker 3: placed inside this home. And I just know what happens
- 2:18Speaker 3: inside the house. And I just, I broke down and
- 2:22Speaker 3: I just had to tell her the truth.
- 2:23Speaker 2: You did?
- 2:25Speaker 3: I told her that my best friend would be an
- 2:27Speaker 3: incredible mother on her own. But I just did not
- 2:30Speaker 3: believe their marriage was really a healthy environment for a child.
- 2:34Speaker 2: Did you really? Okay. Well, I don't know. I mean.
- 2:38Speaker 1: Wow, I... I respect that.
- 2:40Speaker 2: I do too. That's your best friend though.
- 2:43Speaker 1: Yeah, but.
- 2:44Speaker 2: Yeah, but poo, it's a child. Children need to be protected.
- 2:48Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And you can't go into an environment that's toxic. And yeah.
- 2:54Speaker 2: So I could see why you would struggle with lying
- 2:57Speaker 2: about something. So anyone would.
- 2:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 2:59Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 3:00Speaker 3: That's what I was thinking about the child first. And
- 3:03Speaker 3: I was like, I can't just lie and say everything's perfect.
- 3:06Speaker 3: And so I just told her everything. Yeah. And I
- 3:08Speaker 3: just knew like the second I hung up, I was like, oh,
- 3:10Speaker 3: my goodness, I've probably completely destroyed their chances. Sure enough,
- 3:15Speaker 3: I did. That adoption didn't happen. The application didn't get approved,
- 3:19Speaker 3: and my best friend called me just absolutely devastated. She
- 3:24Speaker 3: was crying and asking if the agency had contacted me.
- 3:27Speaker 3: I straight up lied to her and just told her, like, yes,
- 3:31Speaker 3: they called. I gave you guys an amazing reference. And
- 3:35Speaker 3: I have no idea what happened. This is the worst part.
- 3:37Speaker 3: That was almost two years ago. Okay. I've been hanging
- 3:41Speaker 3: on to that for two years. And where it's become
- 3:44Speaker 3: really hard for me is they're divorced now.
- 3:46Speaker 1: Oh, wow.
- 3:47Speaker 2: Oh, they're done.
- 3:49Speaker 3: Yeah. Thank goodness. But yeah, their marriage just eventually fell apart.
- 3:53Speaker 3: And exactly like I was afraid it would. And her ex,
- 3:59Speaker 3: he just moved on right away. So fast. He's already remarried.
- 4:03Speaker 2: Oh, my God.
- 4:04Speaker 3: Yeah. And now him and his new wife are expecting
- 4:08Speaker 3: a baby.
- 4:09Speaker 2: No. Oh, that's awful. That is going to mess with
- 4:12Speaker 2: her so bad. That is going to destroy. That's got
- 4:16Speaker 2: to be so tough on her. I can't even imagine.
- 4:19Speaker 3: It's awful. She's so destroyed about it. The one thing
- 4:22Speaker 3: she wanted more than anything in the world was to
- 4:25Speaker 3: have a baby. And now I'm sitting next to her
- 4:28Speaker 3: while she's crying and I'm comforting her, knowing that I'm
- 4:31Speaker 3: the person that stopped her from having that chance of
- 4:33Speaker 3: becoming a mother.
- 4:34Speaker 2: No.
- 4:34Speaker 3: And it just eats me alive every day.
- 4:38Speaker 2: See, you're not, though. Maybe I did. You're not the
- 4:41Speaker 2: person who stopped her. Her relationship stopped her. He stopped her.
- 4:45Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean, I obviously was trying to do the
- 4:47Speaker 3: right thing for the child, but, you know, obviously they
- 4:49Speaker 3: probably would have still gotten a divorce either way. I
- 4:53Speaker 3: know she would have been a great mom. I'll just
- 4:54Speaker 3: never know if I truly did the right thing.
- 4:57Speaker 2: Candace, what would you have done?
- 4:59Speaker 1: I mean, I don't think you did anything wrong. I mean,
- 5:02Speaker 1: she probably would have wanted the baby in a healthy marriage,
- 5:05Speaker 1: not on her own anyways.
- 5:07Speaker 2: You know what I mean? If this was her dream,
- 5:09Speaker 2: I don't.
- 5:09Speaker 1: Know her, but.
- 5:10Speaker 2: Not saying she couldn't have done it on her own.
- 5:12Speaker 2: I'm sure she could have.
- 5:13Speaker 1: Yeah, and she still could.
- 5:14Speaker 2: And she still could if she wanted to, but that
- 5:16Speaker 2: was not the situation. And that person who's a professional
- 5:19Speaker 2: asked you very specific questions. Mm-hmm. For you to tell
- 5:22Speaker 2: the truth, and you did just that, and they made
- 5:24Speaker 2: the call, not you. Right. It wasn't about her.
- 5:26Speaker 1: It was about him.
- 5:27Speaker 2: Yeah, but she prompted it. For me, it's my best friend.
- 5:31Speaker 2: I don't think I would have done it. I wouldn't
- 5:33Speaker 2: have told on her. Well, then you're doing a disservice
- 5:35Speaker 2: to your best friend, too. I think. Honestly, it wasn't
- 5:38Speaker 2: best for her in that situation. It wasn't. No. So
- 5:41Speaker 2: you're just lying for a friend for no reason. It's
- 5:44Speaker 2: there's no benefit to a child. Yeah.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It's not like that child didn't have a chance. They
- 5:50Speaker 1: probably got adopted by another family that's in a better place.
- 5:54Speaker 1: You know?
- 5:54Speaker 2: Yeah. I know you can beat yourself up about it,
- 5:57Speaker 2: but I think you're going to look back at this
- 5:59Speaker 2: one day and go, I'm glad I did that. She'll
- 6:01Speaker 2: be in a better situation in different circumstances.
- 6:04Speaker 1: She's just not on the other side yet.
- 6:05Speaker 2: Like he is.
- 6:06Speaker 1: And when she is, I think none of this will
- 6:10Speaker 1: hurt like it does now.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Yeah. Well, I appreciate y'all's input on it.
- 6:15Speaker 2: No, I'm glad you confessed to us and you told
- 6:17Speaker 2: us what was going on. And good luck with everything.
- 6:20Speaker 2: And don't beat yourself up. And let us know if
- 6:22Speaker 2: things change or if something happens in the future. Keep
- 6:24Speaker 2: us up to date on what's happening.
- 6:26Speaker 3: I will, for sure. Hopefully I'll have some good news
- 6:29Speaker 3: to report.
- 6:30Speaker 2: Yes, I hope so.
- 6:30Speaker 3: There you go.
