- 0:06SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Emma Young, and I'll bring you on filtered conversations with ambitious women who faced challenges, made bold moves, and learned a lot along the way.
- 0:16SPEAKER_01: You'll get real takeaways, honest lessons, and stories that you're gonna relate to.
- 0:21SPEAKER_01: Righto, let's get started.
- 0:24SPEAKER_01: Hey there and welcome to the podcast.
- 0:26SPEAKER_01: I'm your host, Emma Young, and this is She Said It Out Loud.
- 0:29SPEAKER_01: Today's episode is currently sponsored by Fourth Hold Cafe down at Cable Beach.
- 0:34SPEAKER_01: Trust me, if you haven't gone down there yet, you need to suss out their cold brew along with their coconut chia pudding.
- 0:41SPEAKER_01: Those are just two items that I like to grab and go whenever I'm busy and need to get something quick that's also tasty and healthy.
- 0:50SPEAKER_01: Today's guest is Alice O'Brien.
- 0:52SPEAKER_01: She is known as the tall girl that works at Australia Post here in Broom.
- 0:56SPEAKER_01: She also has a very successful business as the Broom Baker.
- 1:01SPEAKER_01: That's right.
- 1:02SPEAKER_01: She has built up a fabulous reputation as delivering not only tasty cakes, but incredibly decorated ones.
- 1:09SPEAKER_01: Our conversation revolves around today, talking about what it takes to run a small business in a regional town on top of working full-time.
- 1:17SPEAKER_01: And we talk about her partner, Kareem, who is a professional photographer.
- 1:21SPEAKER_01: We also talk about how Alice takes the time throughout her daily routine to do a non-negotiable, which is getting up early, going to the gym, and spending time with her trainer, which happens to be Coach Carly, who has been a previous guest here on the podcast.
- 1:37SPEAKER_01: All right, enough of me waffling.
- 1:39SPEAKER_01: Here is our conversation.
- 1:42SPEAKER_01: Hey there and welcome to the podcast.
- 1:44SPEAKER_01: Alice, you're a woman of many talents.
- 1:46SPEAKER_01: I would have mentioned a few of them in the intro, but besides working at the post office here in Broom five days a week, uh, you are the broom baker.
- 1:54SPEAKER_01: But can you explain to my listeners a little bit about yourself today, Alice?
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Hi.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: I'm Alice and I have been doing the Broom Baker for about two years now.
- 2:03SPEAKER_00: It's been one of my, I don't know, one of my things that I've had on the list for quite a while.
- 2:08SPEAKER_00: Always loved baking, always loved being in the kitchen, sort of creating new things.
- 2:13SPEAKER_00: Just thought might as well use it.
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: If you've got the skill, might as well use it to your advantage.
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Let everyone else enjoy it as well while I'm at it.
- 2:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah, for sure.
- 2:20SPEAKER_01: Okay, what made you want to come to Broom now?
- 2:22SPEAKER_00: I came to Broom for family.
- 2:24SPEAKER_00: We had family up here, so sort of moved out, moved out of home for the first time and moved up to Broome.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: I was working down in Perth and was able to get transferred, so I came up here and started my job almost straight away.
- 2:36SPEAKER_00: And uh six months turned into two years and I'm I'm still here and I don't have any plans on moving anytime soon.
- 2:43SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's awesome.
- 2:44SPEAKER_01: I didn't even actually think about the fact that you could transfer with Australia Post, but I mean that's handy.
- 2:49SPEAKER_00: Yeah, really handy.
- 2:50SPEAKER_00: As soon as you've got your foot in the door, the possibilities are endless, and it's such a great place to work out and they really value everybody there, and it's just amazing.
- 2:58SPEAKER_01: Hey, that's cool.
- 2:59SPEAKER_01: I think I would be dangerous working at Australia Post because I'd be sniffing through everyone's packages, like, oh, she's been to, you know, shopping at Shopo too long, or whatever.
- 3:07SPEAKER_00: And then just yeah, buying your own parcels like the FOMO of everyone else's stuff, or like you see someone's parcel with this brand come and you go and check out the brand, and then next minute you're buying something, next minute you've got three parcels on the way, and then they're all delivered, so you've got to have something else, just at the anticipation of something more.
- 3:22SPEAKER_00: It's really dangerous.
- 3:23SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 3:24SPEAKER_00: That'd be addictive.
- 3:25SPEAKER_01: Yep, so I won't be an Australia Post.
- 3:28SPEAKER_01: If you see me apply, say get out, Emma.
- 3:30SPEAKER_01: You've got you've got too many jobs as it is.
- 3:32SPEAKER_01: Alright, how long have you been a baker?
- 3:35SPEAKER_01: You know, I know you bake cakes and cupcakes, but how long have you been a baker?
- 3:39SPEAKER_01: I feel like this is a skill that not everybody can do.
- 3:43SPEAKER_00: No, it definitely takes a lot of like practice and my cake making skills definitely never used to be what they are now.
- 3:50SPEAKER_00: Um and I would definitely say practice makes perfect.
- 3:53SPEAKER_00: I have been baking probably for about 11 years.
- 3:56SPEAKER_00: Like I've always been in the kitchen as a kid, but I sort of really started taking it a bit more seriously, yeah, 11 years ago.
- 4:03SPEAKER_00: I feel like naturally I'm a gift giver, so any opportunity for somebody's birthday, somebody leaving, like Christmas, any events at school or something like that, I was always making something for someone, regardless on if it was a cake or cupcakes or just desserts.
- 4:19SPEAKER_00: And from there I really just gained more confidence in the kitchen and learning, uh, learning new skills.
- 4:24SPEAKER_00: In school I did hospitality from year seven to year twelve.
- 4:28SPEAKER_00: So I was constantly in the kitchen there as well and just fell in love with all the different techniques of different, I guess, different foods and how how it all works.
- 4:36SPEAKER_00: So trends that I'd see on TikTok, like I always wanted to give the recipe a try and making stuff for people at work.
- 4:42SPEAKER_00: Worked in a centre that had almost 200 contractors.
- 4:45SPEAKER_00: Holy crap.
- 4:46SPEAKER_00: And I would make enough desserts to, you know, make sure that everybody got a try almost every Friday.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: Jesus.
- 4:53SPEAKER_00: And yeah, so it's been a long time in the making and definitely have just improved so much since then.
- 4:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah, and I mean your business is incredibly popular.
- 5:01SPEAKER_01: I'm forever seeing booked out, booked out until such and such month or whatever.
- 5:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's that's a good problem for you to have.
- 5:08SPEAKER_01: But you you know, your reputation is succeeding you right here.
- 5:12SPEAKER_01: Everyone's getting to know who the broom baker is, and holy cow.
- 5:15SPEAKER_00: And I find it even crazier that I haven't advertised once for my business.
- 5:19SPEAKER_00: It's all been word of mouth or giveaways with other brands in town, but no, never once advertised my work.
- 5:26SPEAKER_00: And if somebody saw someone and you know, there was a business card or there's a kids' party, there's ten people that have now seen my business, and they then, you know, it's just keeps going on down the down the line, and I've gained all my followers just from word of mouth, which I think's spectacular as well.
- 5:39SPEAKER_01: That's so good.
- 5:40SPEAKER_01: Let me just get this straight though, no plans on making that full-time, because you love Australia Post so much.
- 5:46SPEAKER_00: I mean, there's always there's always the um opportunity to go part-time if I wanted to.
- 5:50SPEAKER_00: It just really depends on when I feel like it's the right time, but there I could definitely go full-time with the amount of take orders that I do constantly get asked about.
- 5:58SPEAKER_01: I mean, it feels like you've got a healthy balance now of being able to do Australia Post and then do cakes, but I guess you could always see where this takes you in the future.
- 6:06SPEAKER_00: Mm-hmm.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: Definitely possibility.
- 6:09SPEAKER_01: What's the most outrageous?
- 6:10SPEAKER_01: I want to know, is there somebody that's had something ridiculous or for cakes?
- 6:15SPEAKER_00: I did one quite recently actually.
- 6:16SPEAKER_00: It was a cake for a wedding.
- 6:18SPEAKER_00: Now I don't do any like those ridiculously tall tiered cakes or anything like that.
- 6:23SPEAKER_00: Because I was still still practicing, haven't hadn't had enough time to figure those out yet.
- 6:28SPEAKER_00: But somebody did order a wedding cake from me.
- 6:30SPEAKER_00: It was really trendy, really elegant, had all the raspberries on the top, you know, white wedding, and it was a heart cake, and it had to serve about 90 people, maybe 120, depending on you know how much cake you eat or who wants to eat cake.
- 6:43SPEAKER_00: And this cake ended up being 10 and a half kilos.
- 6:46SPEAKER_01: Holy crap.
- 6:47SPEAKER_00: Yep.
- 6:48SPEAKER_01: It was about Did you have to get two people to help you with this cake?
- 6:51SPEAKER_00: I lifted it all myself.
- 6:52SPEAKER_00: Oh God.
- 6:53SPEAKER_00: And trying to get it into the freezer at the venue was was a mission, but that was probably the biggest cake I've ever done.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 6:58SPEAKER_01: I mean 10 kilo cake.
- 7:00SPEAKER_01: Oh god.
- 7:01SPEAKER_01: Do you have this on your Instagram?
- 7:03SPEAKER_00: Yes, it is on my Instagram if you have a look.
- 7:05SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I'm gonna be checking out after this.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Holy crap.
- 7:08SPEAKER_01: Now, what's something running a side business has taught you about yourself that you probably weren't expecting?
- 7:14SPEAKER_00: Definitely having to be organized and on the ball.
- 7:17SPEAKER_00: You've got maybe two orders in the same day that are due, and you've got to remember whose is whose and what they've ordered, what flavour they want, what size they wanted, what colour they wanted, and just making sure that you're getting that right and not mixing them up.
- 7:28SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah, good point.
- 7:29SPEAKER_00: Really got me like in the zone to be organized and on the ball to know who's getting what, and I'd hate for someone to be receiving the wrong thing.
- 7:37SPEAKER_00: That would just be a nightmare.
- 7:38SPEAKER_00: Yeah, gorgeous.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: Far out.
- 7:40SPEAKER_01: I mean, I guess are cupcakes easier then?
- 7:43SPEAKER_00: I mean they're both sort of both sort of similar.
- 7:46SPEAKER_00: Cupcakes are easier to knock out in a short period of time.
- 7:48SPEAKER_00: So if you're ever needing something quick and easy, ask me for cupcakes instead of a cake.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 7:52SPEAKER_00: And I could probably help you out.
- 7:53SPEAKER_00: Some cake like cupcake orders are 60 to 70 cupcakes and it's like, oh, so nerve-wracking that you've got to get it all right.
- 7:59SPEAKER_01: Oh yeah, god geez, that sounds stressful.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, besides being a baker though, you know, that uh we've been talking about and we've been talking about you working at the post office full time.
- 8:10SPEAKER_01: Working at the post office would be so incredibly stressful.
- 8:13SPEAKER_01: I'm thinking, first of all, it's always freezing in there.
- 8:16SPEAKER_01: Second of all, standing uh all day.
- 8:19SPEAKER_01: There's gonna be some proper arseholes.
- 8:21SPEAKER_01: You didn't hear that from me, but I'm just assuming that there is.
- 8:24SPEAKER_01: What's something about working at the post office that you think people would find interesting, though?
- 8:28SPEAKER_00: Um we have lots of people that come in to collect parcels and they might be travelling through town and they might be staying up here for a holiday, and so many people don't know that in Broome we don't have mailboxes out front of our houses or anything.
- 8:41SPEAKER_00: Um so our post office is one of the biggest post office in Australia for the fact that we have to cater for everyone in town if they're traveling here, anyone that doesn't have a P.O.
- 8:51SPEAKER_00: box, people that do have a P.O.
- 8:52SPEAKER_00: box, so that's the whole town that we're having to service for parcels and letters on the daily.
- 8:57SPEAKER_00: And the behind the scenes that goes into that sort of work is just ridiculous.
- 9:01SPEAKER_00: Um, but everyone, you know, in and out, in and out all day, the amount of people that come through that post office.
- 9:08SPEAKER_00: Is it hectic in November and December?
- 9:09SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:10SPEAKER_00: I'm thinking of Black Friday sales and Christmas.
- 9:12SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Black Friday after payday, and Christmas is one of our craziest times of the year, but so many parcels come in, but we've only just got that small space out the back to hold them all in.
- 9:21SPEAKER_00: So it gets so chokers.
- 9:24SPEAKER_00: Um, but everyone does an amazing work to get all the things out to the customers on time and man, you love this job.
- 9:29SPEAKER_01: Listen to you.
- 9:30SPEAKER_01: You're gonna be the Australia Post manager one day, huh?
- 9:33SPEAKER_01: Oh man, I love it.
- 9:34SPEAKER_01: I mean, I look, I go in there a fair bit, I'm always in there sending something or posting something, that's for sure.
- 9:39SPEAKER_01: Well, good on the case.
- 9:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the bloody wedding paperwork.
- 9:44SPEAKER_01: It's because if if I've done a wedding, I have to get that paperwork out.
- 9:47SPEAKER_01: I want to get it out ASAP so A, I don't lose it, and B, it's just done.
- 9:52SPEAKER_01: Great.
- 9:53SPEAKER_01: Okay, so your partner Corinne, speaking of weddings, he's come to a couple because he's a photographer, and I've noticed that he's starting to do social media content as well.
- 10:02SPEAKER_01: How do you keep up with your own content in regards to your cake business?
- 10:07SPEAKER_01: Or is this something he's helping you with?
- 10:09SPEAKER_00: I think it's great that he's a photographer, I can use him to my advantage.
- 10:13SPEAKER_00: Um, he just has that creative eye for everything, and just he takes all my photos for me, edits them all for me.
- 10:19SPEAKER_00: But the delay of being a photographer and having your own work is is crazy.
- 10:23SPEAKER_00: So if you've ever ordered a cake, you might see your photo come about a month later because it's been that long for me to hassle him to get those photos back to me as well.
- 10:30SPEAKER_00: But no, he takes all the photos for me and um edits them all so my page looks crisp, and if something doesn't look right, he'll he'll make sure to let me know before I post.
- 10:39SPEAKER_00: So it's actually really handy.
- 10:40SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I mean, I feel like that's it's similar, you know, when they say if your husband's a plumber electrician and you have that those things at your house are like the last things to get fixed.
- 10:50SPEAKER_01: But Corrine is becoming incredibly busy.
- 10:52SPEAKER_01: And I mean, he's getting out there, he's been at these broom chamber events quite a bit, buzzing around, getting photos.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: I mean, he's very good at what he does.
- 10:59SPEAKER_01: I want to know, this is me being cheeky and being detective young here.
- 11:03SPEAKER_00: How did you guys actually meet?
- 11:04SPEAKER_00: We met about five years ago.
- 11:05SPEAKER_00: Um, it was through Instagram.
- 11:07SPEAKER_00: Um, I was quite a very private person when I left school.
- 11:10SPEAKER_00: Never really went out partying, drinking, never really spoke to anyone that I didn't know.
- 11:14SPEAKER_00: And he had followed me.
- 11:15SPEAKER_00: He he he might tell you a different story, but my version is that he followed me on Instagram and I had a look of at his profile and he was doing some photography work and building up his portfolio with photos from in Perth with some other girls, some models and some brands and things.
- 11:31SPEAKER_00: And we had about 70 mutual friends, but I couldn't pinpoint where he was from, so I declined him.
- 11:37SPEAKER_01: That's a lot of mutual friends.
- 11:39SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_00: And then a couple of days later he requested again and I was like, oh, what does this guy want?
- 11:44SPEAKER_00: He must want me to come model for him, maybe.
- 11:46SPEAKER_00: And I was like, oh, I don't know.
- 11:47SPEAKER_00: So I accepted it and I sent him a message and I was like, hello.
- 11:51SPEAKER_00: And I was just waiting for that spiel of, you know, what what he wanted, or he wanted me to come hang out and do some photos or what, I wasn't too sure.
- 11:58SPEAKER_00: And his response was hi.
- 12:01SPEAKER_00: And that was about it.
- 12:03SPEAKER_00: I waited a couple of hours, didn't hear anything back, and I was like, Oh, this is a bit awkward.
- 12:07SPEAKER_00: So I said, Oh, I really love your photos.
- 12:08SPEAKER_00: He re replied almost straight away and was like, Oh, thanks.
- 12:11SPEAKER_00: And that was it again.
- 12:12SPEAKER_00: And I was like, Oh, this is really awkward.
- 12:14SPEAKER_00: I was like, Oh, are you in Perth?
- 12:15SPEAKER_00: And he was like, Yep, I'm in Perth.
- 12:17SPEAKER_00: And that was literally it.
- 12:18SPEAKER_00: Didn't hear from him again for about two weeks.
- 12:21SPEAKER_00: He was over um over in the East Coast starting up his his life after school and um hanging out with all these other people.
- 12:28SPEAKER_00: And uh he uh messaged me about two weeks later when he was bored.
- 12:32SPEAKER_00: He said that he was coming back to Perth three days later and if I wanted to hang out, and I went, eh, why not?
- 12:38SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:39SPEAKER_00: Um so we hung out, and then um on our second date, he said to me, Look, I went over to the East Coast, I found a place that I was I was gonna live.
- 12:46SPEAKER_00: I've come back to Perth to pick up my things and I'm going.
- 12:48SPEAKER_00: And I went, Oh, okay.
- 12:50SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_00: A little tear to my eye.
- 12:52SPEAKER_00: I've only known this guy for two days.
- 12:54SPEAKER_00: Anyways, it's been five years and he's only just gone back this year, and he's we've been inseparable ever since.
- 12:59SPEAKER_01: So yeah, God, I think it's a bit of a funny story.
- 13:02SPEAKER_01: Yeah, anybody that knows you guys and in town, I mean, some people don't know that you're together.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: I think, you know, sometimes people work it out, especially with run club.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: But he's a great guy, and you guys seem to be a p a really good match.
- 13:13SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 13:13SPEAKER_01: So that's good that you found someone for sure that you know you have a lot of things in common and that he supports your business just as much as you support his.
- 13:21SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's very business-minded, so he really pushed me to start this and has really helped me grow.
- 13:26SPEAKER_00: Any sort of doubts or questions that I've got, he's always there with an answer.
- 13:30SPEAKER_00: Because he obviously runs his own business full-time at a very young age as well.
- 13:33SPEAKER_00: So he really loves the fact that I've got this going.
- 13:36SPEAKER_00: And uh because I work full-time at the post office, he delivers all my cakes for me.
- 13:40SPEAKER_00: So most people never actually see my face when they've spoken to me to order a cake because it's usually him that's knocking on the door and giving them the cake.
- 13:47SPEAKER_01: Jeez, we love green.
- 13:48SPEAKER_01: Freaking hell, this is a man of many talents.
- 13:50SPEAKER_01: He is, and I mean, so are you.
- 13:52SPEAKER_01: That's so good.
- 13:53SPEAKER_01: And I love that, you know, your admiration, you can hear it, that's for sure, in your voice.
- 13:57SPEAKER_01: I think that there would be a lot of women out there that if they're listening to this that have a full-time job, but then also are running.
- 14:05SPEAKER_01: I mean, this seems to be very common, running a small business on the side as well.
- 14:09SPEAKER_01: You know, if you weren't doing the post office and then also being a baker, the broom baker, is there something else that you would be doing?
- 14:16SPEAKER_00: Um, well, a few years ago I did have my own business that I was doing where I was sewing pyjamas.
- 14:23SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 14:23SPEAKER_00: Um, started off very small and it didn't get very far, but I'd honestly love to pick that back up.
- 14:28SPEAKER_00: I think sewing is a skill that not many people have as it's such an old dying skill.
- 14:32SPEAKER_00: Oh yeah.
- 14:33SPEAKER_00: And the fact that I have sewn, you know, multiple pairs of pyjamas, like quite a lot of dresses, and all my clothes, if there was something I ever wanted, I was always sewing it as it was, you know, cheaper and just cool that I have something that nobody else has.
- 14:45SPEAKER_00: Probably bringing that back because that would be something so cool.
- 14:49SPEAKER_01: Man, that's cool.
- 14:50SPEAKER_01: You know what though, I feel like you would be even more busy.
- 14:52SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 14:53SPEAKER_01: Because I don't know anybody.
- 14:55SPEAKER_01: There's one lady that I actually I should take that back.
- 14:58SPEAKER_01: There is one lady who I know that does do alterations, but there's not really that many people.
- 15:04SPEAKER_00: Yeah, that would be probably one of the best things to open up in Broome, the amount of people that you see, you know, on the notice board that want alterations done.
- 15:10SPEAKER_01: Now, I've seen you out doing Run Club.
- 15:13SPEAKER_01: Well, I've only seen you once or twice.
- 15:15SPEAKER_01: I'm making it sound like I'm a freaking stalky here.
- 15:18SPEAKER_01: Anyone that's listened to the podcast knows Coach Carly, knows her episode.
- 15:22SPEAKER_01: It's still up there with one of the most popular episodes.
- 15:24SPEAKER_01: And I think that's because of her personality and the things that she's brought to this community.
- 15:29SPEAKER_01: You, my friend, had definitely done that too, in the sense that you keep mentioning your age and how you're a young person.
- 15:35SPEAKER_01: I don't actually know how old you are, but I'm looking at you thinking, yes, you're obviously young, but you've the fact that you've got a full-time job and that you've got this side business, and then you still make time to do things for Alice.
- 15:48SPEAKER_01: This is huge.
- 15:49SPEAKER_01: You're looking at me like Emma's waffling now, but I'm not, in the sense that so many chicks don't think of themselves as a priority.
- 15:56SPEAKER_01: And I think good on you for you said that Coach Garley is she's your trainer.
- 16:00SPEAKER_01: That's right, yeah.
- 16:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's so cool to even have a trainer.
- 16:03SPEAKER_01: I'm like, I'm made the mistake too of interviewing Alice on a Wednesday.
- 16:07SPEAKER_01: So that's my main interviewing day.
- 16:09SPEAKER_01: And this is run club day, hence why I still haven't been there.
- 16:13SPEAKER_01: But again, I told her that I would before December.
- 16:16SPEAKER_01: So if I'm not there by December, you can literally drag me out.
- 16:18SPEAKER_01: Like, how do you spend because your your time is so filled to the gills and all these other things.
- 16:24SPEAKER_01: How do you find time for yourself?
- 16:25SPEAKER_00: It's definitely not easy.
- 16:27SPEAKER_00: Um, it's something that I've had to learn to do.
- 16:29SPEAKER_00: Sort of just getting up and having a routine for yourself is probably one of the best things that you can do.
- 16:33SPEAKER_00: Um, having Coach Carly as my trainer's really helped as well.
- 16:36SPEAKER_00: It has that extra person who's there to motivate you when times are tough and when you're feeling like you don't want to, she's the reason that you do because you know you're gonna hear her on the other side telling you, Come on, come on, come on, you've got this.
- 16:47SPEAKER_00: And she's really, really good for that.
- 16:48SPEAKER_00: So that that really, really helps.
- 16:50SPEAKER_00: But it's also just good to get out and do things because if you're constantly at work and then going home straight on my feet and baking, it's just it drives you crazy and you don't get that time to wind down and actually rest and and like reset to feel energized again.
- 17:05SPEAKER_00: So just getting out, moving has just been so good.
- 17:08SPEAKER_00: So I do running club the two days that Carly hosts it on the Wednesday and the Saturday, and it just makes me feel like I've started my day right, and then by the end of the day, I am fully exhausted enough to have an an amazing sleep.
- 17:20SPEAKER_00: It's definitely not easy, but it's made it so much better.
- 17:22SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 17:23SPEAKER_01: Hey, I mean that you've just really brought up a good point too about sleep, in the sense that you're obviously bloody so incredibly busy, but then fitting in the time to do the exercise.
- 17:32SPEAKER_01: I mean, good on you.
- 17:33SPEAKER_01: You should you should be proud of yourself for doing that.
- 17:36SPEAKER_01: And not having a sook and you know, saying, Oh, what woe is me, I'm just so busy, I'm popped out as broombaker, and I'm, you know, up and coming Australia Post Manager.
- 17:45SPEAKER_01: I don't have time for myself.
- 17:46SPEAKER_01: Good on you, I love that.
- 17:48SPEAKER_00: Yeah, definitely do have a sook, but it's just the certain people that have to hear it.
- 17:52SPEAKER_00: I feel bad for them, but it's definitely not easy.
- 17:55SPEAKER_01: Okay, look, we're coming up to rapid fire questions for you.
- 17:59SPEAKER_01: Now I've got a rough idea what this answer is gonna be, but what's harder?
- 18:03SPEAKER_01: Is it dealing with customers at the post office or dealing with customers ordering cakes?
- 18:08SPEAKER_00: Definitely people ordering cakes.
- 18:10SPEAKER_00: Some people have a very specific expectation of what they want, and sometimes it's it's hard to meet when someone's created something, you can't just copy it exactly how it is because it's gonna be your style or or your taste, and it's getting to the point now where lots of AI photos come in and they're just things that you just can't physically replicate and they expect that quite a lot, and it's just hard to sort of make substitutes or alterations for for those things when that's what they've got their heart set on.
- 18:37SPEAKER_00: So it's probably quite a bit harder trying to deal with that and making sure that they're still happy while receiving their order and um that they're still getting some sort of element of the cake that they they were expecting.
- 18:47SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
- 18:48SPEAKER_01: That's a really good point.
- 18:49SPEAKER_01: I didn't even think about that.
- 18:50SPEAKER_01: AI cakes.
- 18:51SPEAKER_01: Because they're probably looking so incredibly amazing that they're not even actually realistic.
- 18:56SPEAKER_00: And it finds it's quite hard as well.
- 18:58SPEAKER_00: Obviously, we live in Broome, there's not any cake shops here to buy your supplies from.
- 19:02SPEAKER_00: So having to make sure that I'm getting it shipped up in time for their cakes as well is really hard to keep on top of and make sure that, you know, they're getting those extra little pieces um to make their day even more special.
- 19:13SPEAKER_01: Far it.
- 19:14SPEAKER_00: Okay, what's a non-negotiable in your daily routine?
- 19:18SPEAKER_00: Definitely getting your steps in, getting out, seeing the sun, uh, early morning really starts my day off right, making sure that you're sticking sticking to a plan or writing down what's for the day.
- 19:30SPEAKER_00: Um so as soon as I get home from the day after work, I've I've got it all there in front of me.
- 19:34SPEAKER_01: I love asking you this question.
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: It's one of my most favourite questions ever.
- 19:38SPEAKER_01: But it's always because everybody tells me something different.
- 19:41SPEAKER_01: Now, if I was to get some of Alice's friends, what are three words that you think that they're gonna use to describe you?
- 19:48SPEAKER_00: Um, I would say funny, talented, and kind.
- 19:52SPEAKER_00: That's probably my top three.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: But I don't know.
- 19:54SPEAKER_00: I mean, I was thinking generous.
- 19:56SPEAKER_00: That too?
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
- 19:57SPEAKER_00: Yeah, generous.
- 19:58SPEAKER_00: I would maybe, maybe I'll replace kind with generous.
- 20:00SPEAKER_00: That's probably one of the one of the better ones.
- 20:02SPEAKER_01: Well, I'm definitely not telling you what to do.
- 20:04SPEAKER_01: But the fact that you're telling me that you're baking all these desserts, just the time that I know that that would take to do that is generous of a lot of things, your time, your effort, and your energy.
- 20:14SPEAKER_01: So good on you.
- 20:15SPEAKER_01: Listen, now I didn't even tell you this, but I'm sure that you would know this that at the end of every episode, I do a shout out to can be a woman, a couple women, however you want it to be.
- 20:26SPEAKER_01: But it's got to be somebody that's inspired you or got you to where you are today, or just somebody that you might admire from a distance.
- 20:32SPEAKER_01: Oh wow.
- 20:33SPEAKER_00: There's quite a few that pop into mind.
- 20:35SPEAKER_00: I could probably even say you.
- 20:37SPEAKER_00: Because I feel like you got my name out there.
- 20:38SPEAKER_00: Well, that is.
- 20:39SPEAKER_00: From the start, you're one of the first customers, believes in me, really got my name out there, you know.
- 20:43SPEAKER_00: Any wedding, oh, go see Alice.
- 20:45SPEAKER_00: Any any event, oh, I know someone, Alice, and really got my name out there.
- 20:49SPEAKER_00: People will message me and I'm, you know, I'm curious.
- 20:51SPEAKER_00: Oh, how did you find me?
- 20:52SPEAKER_00: Oh, Emma Tolpe, come see you.
- 20:54SPEAKER_01: Oh, that's sweet.
- 20:55SPEAKER_00: I could probably say that.
- 20:56SPEAKER_00: That that's that's been one of the main reasons that I've been able to grow.
- 21:00SPEAKER_00: You're always at these events, you know.
- 21:01SPEAKER_00: Oh, yes, I think.
- 21:02SPEAKER_00: You've got the biggest network I've ever known.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: Oh, thanks.
- 21:04SPEAKER_00: So I do it definitely helps quite a lot.
- 21:08SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 21:09SPEAKER_00: So it's definitely helped with getting my name out there a lot more, and from there, obviously, it just expands so much further.
- 21:15SPEAKER_01: Oh, thanks.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Thank you for that.
- 21:17SPEAKER_01: Oh, not a problem at all.
- 21:19SPEAKER_01: Look, it's just something that I love to do.
- 21:21SPEAKER_01: Our conversation today has just been so good.
- 21:23SPEAKER_01: I've learned a lot of things about you.
