- 0:22SPEAKER_00: One of the most important truths you will ever learn as a human being is coming to grips with the idea that you don't have an objective view of reality.
- 0:31SPEAKER_00: Now, this is hard to hear because we're deluded into believing that we see things as they are.
- 0:37SPEAKER_00: We assume that we can see ourselves and everybody else clearly.
- 0:41SPEAKER_00: We trust that our perceptions about our level of talent and other people's talent is pretty much on target.
- 0:48SPEAKER_00: But that's almost never the case.
- 0:50SPEAKER_00: In truth, we tend to underestimate our own potential while overestimating everybody else's potential.
- 0:57SPEAKER_00: In other words, we think everybody else deserves success while we don't deserve success.
- 1:03SPEAKER_00: Not everybody sees the world in this way, of course, but having talked to lots of writers over the course of my lifetime and being a writer myself, I think this is the way that most writers tend to look at the world.
- 1:14SPEAKER_00: When we see other people succeed as writers, we believe they deserved it more, or they're probably more talented than we are.
- 1:22SPEAKER_00: But the reality is that they probably just worked harder, they had better connections, or they were more creative and persistent with their marketing.
- 1:30SPEAKER_00: So my question to you is, why not you?
- 1:33SPEAKER_00: Why shouldn't you also get to experience success?
- 1:36SPEAKER_00: Is there any reason that you shouldn't be just as successful as the next person?
- 1:41SPEAKER_00: They're no more deserving than you are.
- 1:43SPEAKER_00: In fact, none of us really deserves anything in this life.
- 1:45SPEAKER_00: We all start with nothing and we will exit this life not being able to carry anything with us into the next realm.
- 1:52SPEAKER_00: So I believe that success in your writing doesn't have anything to do with what anybody deserves or doesn't deserve.
- 1:58SPEAKER_00: Success comes as a result of the actions that you consistently take over time.
- 2:04SPEAKER_00: Now, yes, some people are more connected, some have more resources, and so forth, but all that is irrelevant because you have access to the same opportunities.
- 2:12SPEAKER_00: So don't ask, why them?
- 2:14SPEAKER_00: Why are they successful?
- 2:15SPEAKER_00: Why am I not successful?
- 2:17SPEAKER_00: Instead, ask, why not me?
- 2:19SPEAKER_00: Why shouldn't I be the one who experiences success also?
- 2:23SPEAKER_00: Success doesn't come to people who quote unquote deserve it.
- 2:26SPEAKER_00: Success comes to people who work for it.
- 2:29SPEAKER_00: So here's my question for you today.
- 2:31SPEAKER_00: Do you believe that you deserve to be just as successful as the next person?
- 2:35SPEAKER_00: If not, what's keeping you from that belief?
