- 0:26Speaker 1: I do have a secret.
- 0:28Speaker 2: I've been keeping it for about three years and honestly,
- 0:31Speaker 2: only my mom knows about it. I'm married to a
- 0:34Speaker 2: wonderful man and between the two of us, we have
- 0:37Speaker 2: four kids. I have two from a previous marriage. He
- 0:40Speaker 2: has two from his previous marriage. And I know this
- 0:43Speaker 2: is gonna sound terrible to say, but his kids used
- 0:47Speaker 2: to be.
- 0:49Speaker 1: A lot.
- 0:49Speaker 2: I guess you could say they were really difficult when
- 0:52Speaker 2: they were younger, constantly acting up, being disrespectful, and to
- 0:57Speaker 2: be completely honest, my side of.
- 0:58Speaker 1: The family just never really bonded with them. Because of it.
- 1:02Speaker 1: Here's the secret.
- 1:03Speaker 2: Whenever we have birthdays, Christmas, Easter, pretty much any holiday
- 1:07Speaker 2: where all the kids are together, everything looks completely fair.
- 1:11Speaker 2: Everyone opens up presence, they take pictures, they have a
- 1:14Speaker 2: great time. But then a day or two later, my
- 1:17Speaker 2: mom shall invite me and.
- 1:18Speaker 1: My two kids over. She'll hand them.
- 1:21Speaker 2: Extra gifts, slip them some cash, maybe buy them something special,
- 1:25Speaker 2: and tell them.
- 1:26Speaker 1: Not to mention it.
- 1:27Speaker 2: And so it's basically a second little celebration that my
- 1:32Speaker 2: husband and step kids know absolutely nothing about.
- 1:34Speaker 1: Oh and this has been going on for about almost
- 1:37Speaker 1: three years.
- 1:38Speaker 4: Okay, so you have Wow.
- 1:40Speaker 3: So your mom has almost like a second little holiday
- 1:44Speaker 3: for just your kids, cut stab kids out and even
- 1:48Speaker 3: your husband out, and you kind of get extra gifts
- 1:51Speaker 3: and do your thing.
- 1:52Speaker 4: And your husband doesn't even know.
- 1:53Speaker 5: Wow.
- 1:54Speaker 1: Yeah, he has no idea.
- 1:55Speaker 2: He thinks that everything is split evenly before or between
- 1:59Speaker 2: all the four kids.
- 2:00Speaker 4: It's okay.
- 2:01Speaker 2: So yeah, I've told my mom before that it makes me,
- 2:04Speaker 2: it makes you feel a little bit guilty, but she
- 2:06Speaker 2: always says the same thing.
- 2:08Speaker 1: They're not her grandchildren, and I'm polite to them, i.
- 2:13Speaker 2: Buy them gifts, but I'm always gonna spoil my grandkids
- 2:16Speaker 2: more and however I want, and so I can understand,
- 2:21Speaker 2: like where she's coming from.
- 2:22Speaker 1: My step kids, they've gotten a lot better over the
- 2:25Speaker 1: past couple of years, and I do love them, and
- 2:27Speaker 1: that's why I feel guilty keeping this secret. But at
- 2:30Speaker 1: the same time, I.
- 2:31Speaker 2: Can't exactly, you know, tell my mom how to spend
- 2:34Speaker 2: her money, who she's allowed to spoil. And so for
- 2:37Speaker 2: the last three years, we've just basically been keeping this
- 2:40Speaker 2: little secret family celebration so that only the three of
- 2:44Speaker 2: us know about it. I'm curious if I'm doing the
- 2:49Speaker 2: wrong thing or it's just one of those awkward realities
- 2:53Speaker 2: that happens in blended families.
- 2:55Speaker 1: Either way, nobody in my house knows besides me.
- 3:00Speaker 4: Honest with you, I have a feeling this happens a lot.
- 3:02Speaker 5: Yeah, it is, because if you weren't there and you
- 3:04Speaker 5: don't want to be a part of this, she'd still
- 3:06Speaker 5: do it with your kids and spoil them.
- 3:08Speaker 3: That's what I think happens. I think that probably happens,
- 3:10Speaker 3: and people just don't know about it. And I'm not
- 3:13Speaker 3: saying it should or shouldn't. I mean, but you know,
- 3:17Speaker 3: can you feel the same. And I'm not in a
- 3:19Speaker 3: blended family. Can you feel the same about other people's kids?
- 3:22Speaker 3: If you're a grandparent, right, then you're not around these
- 3:25Speaker 3: kids that often. You know, you obviously have a bond
- 3:27Speaker 3: that's different with your biological grandchild.
- 3:30Speaker 5: You can't deny the bond is different.
- 3:32Speaker 4: No, right, you can't deny that.
- 3:34Speaker 3: But can you give the illusion you know that everything's
- 3:37Speaker 3: fair and it's equal.
- 3:38Speaker 4: I mean, you should do that, but then do you
- 3:40Speaker 4: spoil them on the side.
- 3:41Speaker 5: Or design like she's cutting them out completely and not
- 3:43Speaker 5: getting their presence or celebrating them.
- 3:45Speaker 3: I just don't like telling kids, hey, don't say anything
- 3:48Speaker 3: about this.
- 3:49Speaker 4: Yeah, that's a lot of pressure on a kid.
- 3:51Speaker 3: Well, and it sets the tone that if somebody else says, hey, don't,
- 3:54Speaker 3: especially at a young age, don't say anything about this,
- 3:57Speaker 3: that they shouldn't when maybe it's something they should absolutely
- 4:00Speaker 3: say something about.
- 4:01Speaker 2: Right.
- 4:02Speaker 4: But I don't know.
- 4:03Speaker 5: But I mean, I'm not in a blended family either,
- 4:05Speaker 5: But I know people who are, and I've talked to them,
- 4:09Speaker 5: and I know that they definitely have a different bond
- 4:11Speaker 5: and they treat them differently. They're not, you know, treating
- 4:14Speaker 5: one side unfairly or poorly.
- 4:16Speaker 1: They're just treating one side better.
- 4:18Speaker 3: Yeah, and I know, but I also know families who
- 4:21Speaker 3: have step children or step grandchildren who treat them just
- 4:24Speaker 3: as good, love them just as much. I'm not saying
- 4:27Speaker 3: that your mom doesn't care for the step kids. Yeah,
- 4:29Speaker 3: but I mean sometimes that bond also grows over time,
- 4:32Speaker 3: so maybe that'll change. And either way, it's something interesting.
- 4:37Speaker 3: I'm gonna ask other people if they deal with this
- 4:39Speaker 3: and what grandma's and moms do in a situation, because
- 4:42Speaker 3: I could totally see my mom doing this. Yeah, rider,
- 4:48Speaker 3: get over here, here's an extra hundred.
- 4:50Speaker 5: I think it's different too when they're depending on their.
- 4:52Speaker 4: Age, you know what I mean.
- 4:53Speaker 5: Yeah, like if you suddenly had a tween or teen
- 4:56Speaker 5: in your life, I mean, it wouldn't compare to writer
- 5:00Speaker 5: about to be sixteen. It's a little bit different there
- 5:03Speaker 5: for his birth, and of.
- 5:04Speaker 3: Course that bond is going to be different. Well, thank
- 5:06Speaker 3: you for your secret. I'm going to ask everybody what
- 5:08Speaker 3: they think. And I appreciate you opening up to us.
- 5:11Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I appreciate it as well.
- 5:13Speaker 3: Yeah, so many dms saying oh, yeah, this happens a lot,
- 5:16Speaker 3: Oh this happens with my family, or I was the
- 5:18Speaker 3: kid that got left down. Then my stepbrother would tell
- 5:21Speaker 3: me what they got. Anyway, that's the worst. Come on,
- 5:27Speaker 3: don't do that to the kids.
