- 0:00Welcome back to Fostering Faith. I'm going to
- 0:02be your host Tracy, and we are going to be in
- 0:03episode three of October. And this is something
- 0:06that you don't want to miss when you cannot hear
- 0:09and hold on to what you know. And so in this
- 0:12episode, we're going to be talking about uncertain
- 0:14seasons, every thought. feeling coincidence,
- 0:18an open door cannot begin to look like a message
- 0:20from God. And we're going to offer a grounded
- 0:22approach for discernment through scripture, the
- 0:25character of Jesus, wise community, and a faithful
- 0:28next step. Drawing from Elijah at Horhab and
- 0:30the wisdom of James, this episode helps resist
- 0:34both frantic sign seeking and spiritual paralysis.
- 0:39And so welcome back. To Fostering Faith, I am
- 0:41gonna be your host again. We are here fostering
- 0:43our faith together. We do not have it all figured
- 0:45out, but we are just walking together because
- 0:47we are better together. And so in this week three,
- 0:50when God feels silent, faith in the waiting.
- 0:54And so we had talked about the difference between
- 0:56silence and absence, and we've talked about waiting
- 0:58without losing heart. And today we're gonna be
- 1:00facing practical questions. What do we do when
- 1:02we need direction and cannot hear a clear answer?
- 1:06Should I stay or should I go? Should I say yes
- 1:08or should I say no? Start now or wait. Have a
- 1:12conversation or give it time. And sometimes we
- 1:14wish God would send a message so unmistakably
- 1:17that no faith, wisdom, or courage would be required.
- 1:21We wait. We want the cloud to move. We want the
- 1:24door to glow. We want the answer to give us a
- 1:26name on it. But every day discernment is quieter
- 1:30than that. And God has given us his word, his
- 1:32spirit, his wisdom, his community, a renewed
- 1:35mind and the ability to take responsible steps.
- 1:38Disperiment is not decoding a secret universe.
- 1:41It is learning to recognize that consistent with
- 1:45God's revealing character and walking in humility.
- 1:49And so let us pray. Father God, give us the wisdom
- 1:51from above. Pure peace, loving, gentle, open.
- 1:55to reason, full of mercy and good fruit. Quiet
- 1:59our fear, our pride, our impulse. Guard us from
- 2:02calling, our preferences, your voice. Help us
- 2:04recognize that you have already made clear and
- 2:07trust you with what remains uncertain. In Jesus'
- 2:10name I pray. Amen. And so let's get into this.
- 2:13In First Kings 19, Elijah is exhausted and afraid
- 2:16after a dramatic victory on Mount Carmel. He
- 2:19runs for his life from Jezebel. He has literally
- 2:23just defeated all of these people with God's
- 2:25power. And you have a woman named Jezebel that
- 2:29has threatened to kill him. And so therefore,
- 2:31what does he do? He runs. And while under a broom
- 2:36tree, he asked to die, and God responds first
- 2:39with care. And so, what does he do? He says,
- 2:43no, you need some rest, you need some food, you
- 2:46need some water, and you just need to be with
- 2:48me. And so that that detail matters. Before God
- 2:51gives Elijah further direction, he cares for
- 2:54his depleted body. Exhaustion can make discernment
- 2:57harder. Sometimes the next spiritual step is
- 2:59not another hour of analysis. It is rest and
- 3:03nourishment. At Horhab, Elijah experienced a
- 3:06powerful wind, an earthquake, and a fire, but
- 3:09the Lord is not described as being in those manifestations.
- 3:14Afterwards, God comes in this translation rendered
- 3:19as gentle whisper, a lower voice, a sound of
- 3:24a thin silence. The lesson is not that God only
- 3:27speaks quietly. Everywhere else, He speaks with
- 3:30thunder and prophets and scripture. Dreams in
- 3:33a voice of Jesus. That point is that Elijah cannot
- 3:37reduce God's presence to this dramatic sign that
- 3:40he experiences. We make the same mistake as we
- 3:43assume God's presence must feel intense and,
- 3:46oh, I didn't cry at worship or I didn't get goosebumps.
- 3:48And so a strong emotion is not automatically
- 3:51the Holy Spirit. This unusual coincidence is
- 3:54not automatically command. A viral sermon clip
- 3:57is not your automatic answer. God can use circumstances,
- 4:01impressions, and counsel, but they need tested.
- 4:04Not everything that you want to see is from God.
- 4:08And so begin with what God has already said.
- 4:10When we cannot hear something new, we return
- 4:12to what God said the last time. Are we doing
- 4:15what He said? And so a lot of times, He will
- 4:18give us step -by -step plans, not jump from point
- 4:21A to point Z. You got to do B before you get
- 4:24to C. And so what's the last thing that He said?
- 4:27Scripture may not tell you what job to accept,
- 4:30but He tells you not to build your decision on
- 4:34greed, neglect, of those that you've entrusted,
- 4:38deception, exploitation. Scripture may not name
- 4:42the person that you should marry, but it gives
- 4:44you a vision of a covenantal faithfulness, mutual
- 4:47honor, truth, wisdom, shared devotion to Christ.
- 4:51Scripture may not tell us what city to live in,
- 4:54but it calls you to love your neighbor. Practice
- 4:57justice, participate in a Christian community,
- 5:00and steward your responsibilities. And sometimes
- 5:03ask God for specific guidance while ignoring
- 5:06general obedience. We want the word about our
- 5:09future while resisting His clear word about forgiveness.
- 5:13Honesty, generosity, purity, humility, and reconciliation.
- 5:18Do the next clear thing before demanding the
- 5:22next hidden thing. This is not a way to earn
- 5:26revelation. It is not a way to become trustworthy
- 5:29with the light we already have. In Psalm 119
- 5:32calls God's word a lamp to our feet and a light
- 5:36to our path. A lamp is usually gives enough light
- 5:40for the next step and the floodlight over the
- 5:43next 10 years. A couple years ago my mom gave
- 5:45me a headlamp to run in the morning and because
- 5:48the one that I had it was I mean it may experience
- 5:53the word of God because it was not very light
- 5:56and I really couldn't see with it. But you just
- 5:57had to trust the process and hope you didn't
- 5:59fall in the hole or step on something that you
- 6:01weren't supposed to. This light is like a LED
- 6:03and it will give me light three and four light
- 6:06poles ahead of me. And so I always know where
- 6:08I'm going. I can see it's bright. I mean, it's
- 6:10kind of like running at noon at five o 'clock
- 6:12in the morning. And so you're not really scared
- 6:14to run out there. But as time goes, it needs
- 6:17to be charged. And so just like us, and so sometimes
- 6:20We are walking and we know exactly what we're
- 6:22supposed to be doing because we're connected
- 6:24to God. We've recharged. We've spent time in
- 6:26His presence. And so our spiritual battery is
- 6:29full. And a lot of times, whenever we disconnect
- 6:31and we get busy and doing things, all of a sudden
- 6:33we don't see. We don't know the next step because
- 6:36we've not charged our spiritual battery. We've
- 6:38not looked and seen and sought after Him. We
- 6:40charged ourselves on Sunday. And then by Wednesday,
- 6:44we're kind of like... I don't see anything. I
- 6:47don't see anything. Wednesday, two weeks from
- 6:49now, one month from now. And so sometimes a charge
- 6:51can last for a long time. And then the next thing
- 6:54you know, like, hey, where am I? How come I can't
- 6:56see anything? When was the last time that you
- 6:59charged your spiritual battery? Where are you
- 7:01at? Are you living over here without an LED?
- 7:05I mean, and so a lot of times we have to sage
- 7:07spiritually charged. We've got to stay connected,
- 7:10just like we got to stay connected to the vine
- 7:11to see our fruit. And so just like this, to be
- 7:13able to see where we're going, we're asking him,
- 7:15we're seeking him. You know, we're knocking at
- 7:18that door. And so... you know, over time we've
- 7:21got to make sure that our lit path is being recharged
- 7:24and so we can keep walking with him, step by
- 7:27step, step by step, that we're not running a
- 7:28race without him. And so those voices that we
- 7:31ask, and so 1 John 4 tells believers not to believe
- 7:34every spirit but to test them. Discernment requires
- 7:37humility. Before our own desires, can sound pretty
- 7:41persuasive. How many times have we talked ourselves
- 7:43into bad things? Because it sounded real good
- 7:46and we can talk ourselves into doing pretty stupid
- 7:49things. And so here are some four tests that
- 7:51we can use. The spiritual test. Does this direction
- 7:55contradict any clear teaching in scripture? God
- 7:58will not guide you to sin and then call it peace.
- 8:02He's not gonna tell you to stay in that relationship.
- 8:05He's not gonna tell you to keep doing things
- 8:08that are not He's not going to tell you to be
- 8:12in a sexual relationship and you're not married.
- 8:14He's not going to tell you to keep doing drugs
- 8:17or overeating and, oh, this just feels so good.
- 8:19He's not going to tell you to do that. And so
- 8:21test those voices. And then the Jesus test. Does
- 8:24this look like a character of Christ? Truth and
- 8:27grace, courage and humility, holiness and love.
- 8:31A choice can be technically permissible and still
- 8:35form you away from his character. What does it
- 8:39look like? Are all those something that you can
- 8:43point towards? The fruit test. What is the direction
- 8:46producing over time? The fruit of the spirit
- 8:49includes love, joy, peace, patience, kindness,
- 8:51goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self
- 8:53-control. Peace alone is not only a test. Avoidance
- 8:58can feel peaceful for the moment because you
- 9:00swooped it under the rug. Oh, I feel peace. I
- 9:02don't have to deal with it. But look at the whole
- 9:04pattern of the fruit. Where is this going to
- 9:06be? What's this going to turn into? The community
- 9:09test. Can you bring this into light with wise,
- 9:13mature believers who know you well? Proverbs
- 9:17repeatedly emphasizes this wise safety council.
- 9:21Choose people. who will not simply echo what
- 9:24you want. And so many times, whether you're on
- 9:26a fitness journey, when you're on a spiritual
- 9:28journey, whenever you need to have those decisions,
- 9:30you need to give people authority and pick people
- 9:33that will tell you no. And so a lot of times
- 9:35we want a really bad idea. And so we go to the
- 9:38person that is going to say, absolutely, that
- 9:39sounds great. You deserve it. Let's go. And,
- 9:42you know, oftentimes my friend Nicole says, if
- 9:44I want to eat a dark peanut butter, I'm not going
- 9:45to call Tracy because I know that she's going
- 9:47to tell me no, but she's going to call her other
- 9:48friend. And she's gonna be like, absolutely,
- 9:50I'll bring you a spoon. Because we have people
- 9:53in our lives that love us dearly. But also, too,
- 9:56we have people in our lives that are not afraid
- 9:58to tell you no. And so also, too, community.
- 10:01Hopefully we are in a Bible -believing church
- 10:04in that we are in small groups and that if you
- 10:06are in your 40s and 50s, you need to be asking
- 10:0970s and 80 -year -olds questions because God
- 10:12gave them white hair and they have wisdom and
- 10:14they've walked through it. They've seen these
- 10:15things. And so picking people that are older
- 10:17and wiser, that have been walking with Jesus.
- 10:20But also too, I mean, we often say that, you
- 10:22know, the disciples were our teenagers' age.
- 10:26And so oftentimes kids will teach us, God will
- 10:29use them to teach us too. But also seeking wise
- 10:31counsel, seeking those people that have been
- 10:33in the game for decades longer than we have is
- 10:36so essential. But also realize that no human
- 10:39counselor is infallible. The group agreement
- 10:42is not the voice of God. And so if you're in
- 10:44a group text with all these people, they're like,
- 10:46absolutely do it. That does not mean it's God's
- 10:49voice, but isolation makes self -deception easier.
- 10:54And so theology practiced by itself is dangerous.
- 10:58And so you can talk yourself into a lot of things.
- 11:01And so bringing those major decisions and those
- 11:03decisions that are important to you, because
- 11:05if they're important to you, they're important
- 11:06to God, bring them to trust somebody that is
- 11:09trustworthy. And so, and stop chasing signs.
- 11:12In the anxious season, we can become spiritually
- 11:14superstitious. If this next car is blue, then
- 11:17I will say yes. If this next number, if I see
- 11:20this next number again, then that's God confirming.
- 11:23If the song plays at the right time, I know the
- 11:26relationship is meant for me. God is free to
- 11:29use circumstances, absolutely. But we are not
- 11:33instructed to turn ordinary coincidences into
- 11:36private codes. Sign chasing can make us dependent
- 11:40on constant confirmation and afraid to use wisdom.
- 11:45Gideon's fleece is sometimes treated as a decision
- 11:47-making formula, but the story takes place after
- 11:50God has already spoken clearly. Gideon's repeated
- 11:54testing reflects his fear more than a universal
- 11:57method. that God's commands us to copy. Instead
- 12:01of asking for endless signs, ask for wisdom.
- 12:04In James one, we read that this morning in class,
- 12:06and so James one five, but if any of you lack
- 12:09wisdom, let us ask God who gives us liberally
- 12:13without reproach and it will be given to you.
- 12:16And so we also have Solomon who asked for wisdom
- 12:19in first Kings three, nine through 12. And so
- 12:22if we want. to make sure that we're able to make
- 12:25these decisions, we are guided by the Holy Spirit.
- 12:29And so we have scripture to go to. And so this
- 12:32is a skill of faithful living shaped by God's
- 12:35truth. And sometimes after prayer and scripture
- 12:37and counsel and thoughtful and careful thought,
- 12:41two options may remain morally wise. In those
- 12:44moments, you have the freedom to choose, that
- 12:48you may feel less spiritual than receiving a
- 12:51supernatural instruction, but freedom is not
- 12:53abandonment. A loving father can guide his children
- 12:55without controlling every preference. Consider
- 12:58the responsibilities, the gifts, the limits,
- 13:01the season, and likely fruit. of each choice
- 13:04and make the best decision you can with the information
- 13:08available. And then move forward humbly, ready
- 13:11to adjust if new wisdom comes. Oftentimes, He'll
- 13:14give you more instruction as you walk. And do
- 13:17not demand certainty that God has not promised.
- 13:22Faithfulness is possible even when uncertainty
- 13:25is not. And if you make an imperfect choice,
- 13:28God is not standing there at the distance waiting
- 13:30for you to ruin His entire plan. Repent where
- 13:35needed, learn, seek counsel, and take the next
- 13:39faithful step. God knew you're going to make
- 13:41that decision anyway. It's not like you can ruin
- 13:43His plans. God provides a larger and His providences
- 13:48are larger than your ability to choose flawlessly.
- 13:52And so a discernment page for this week. And
- 13:56so take one decision and write it on the top
- 13:59of your page. and divide the page into five short
- 14:03sections and then label it. What is clear in
- 14:08scripture? What facts do I actually know? And
- 14:12what am I assuming? And I think that's a lot
- 14:14of people, even myself, we assume things. We
- 14:17actually, facts are facts. And what did we assume?
- 14:21And what desires or fears may be influencing
- 14:23me? What do wise people see? What is one reversible
- 14:29Next step. And so that last question can reduce
- 14:34a little bit of fear. You may not need to make
- 14:37a final decision today. You may need to gather
- 14:40some more information, schedule a conversation,
- 14:42visit the place, ask better questions, and review
- 14:46the budget or set a reasonable deadline. Small
- 14:49faithful steps often reveal what endless internal
- 14:52debate cannot. And so as we close, ask yourself,
- 14:57Am I waiting for new guidance while resisting
- 15:00something God has already made clear? What is
- 15:03it? What did He tell you to do last? What voice
- 15:07needs testing? Where have I confused intensity
- 15:11with truth? And what wise next step can I take
- 15:16without pretending to know the entire path? And
- 15:19so let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, thank you
- 15:21so much for these listeners. Thank you so much
- 15:23for today. Thank you that we are not the sons
- 15:28and daughters of the author of Confusion. Thank
- 15:30you that you do not put us to shame for needing
- 15:33wisdom. Anchor us in scripture. Form the character
- 15:37of Jesus in us. Give us honest friends and mature
- 15:40counsel. Free us from superstition, panic, and
- 15:44paralysis. Where a decision is clear, give us
- 15:47courage to obey. Where faithful options remain,
- 15:51give us freedom to choose humbly. And when we
- 15:54cannot see far ahead, let your word be enough
- 15:57light for the next step. And we pray this in
- 16:00Jesus' name, amen and amen. Thank you guys so
- 16:03much for listening. Share this episode with someone
- 16:05that's facing a decision and remind them they
- 16:08do not need to manufacture certainty and walk
- 16:11faithfully. And so follow us on Fostering Faith.
- 16:15Go to our website, Fostering Faith Media, for
- 16:17our comparison companion reflection guides. Hopefully
- 16:21we're taking this into small groups as small
- 16:23group seasons. This is my endless and always
- 16:26will be plug for small groups. Get connected
- 16:28with small groups. Get into a community. Get
- 16:30in with women and men that are facing battles
- 16:33because there's often best friends waiting on
- 16:36you in these small groups. Until next week is
- 16:39gonna be our final episode and we're going. And
- 16:42to the deepest part of the conversation, how
- 16:44God meets us in the dark when silence feels lost.
- 16:48Until then, stay tuned. We love you guys. Bye.
