- 0:04Speaker 1: Welcome into Northside Territory. Foul Territory Networks Cubs podcast. I'm sad,
- 0:08Speaker 1: I'm Charma. With my partner Patrick Mooney, we are your
- 0:11Speaker 1: Cubs beat writers over at the Athletic and Patrick Cubs
- 0:15Speaker 1: convention has wrapped up. We are less than a month away,
- 0:19Speaker 1: like just a couple of weeks away from pitchers and
- 0:21Speaker 1: catchers reporting here. I guess it's a it's almost it
- 0:28Speaker 1: feels like it's almost baseball season. With the Bears being
- 0:31Speaker 1: eliminated in a heartbreaking fashion, we've got the two most
- 0:36Speaker 1: hated men in Wisconsin. And and Johnson and Craig Counsel
- 0:42Speaker 1: enjoyed that that response from Counsel about whether he'd get
- 0:47Speaker 1: bood Moore Ben Johnson, Uh yeah, prompt star.
- 0:50Speaker 2: Buddy John Greenberg for teeing that one up of you
- 0:52Speaker 2: know who would get bood Moore, you know, doing a
- 0:55Speaker 2: pitching change or you know the first pitch scenario, Ben
- 0:58Speaker 2: Johnson or Craig Counsel in Milwaukee. I Greg, Greg that
- 1:02Speaker 2: was a good brain teaser for Craig. He enjoyed that one.
- 1:05Speaker 1: Yeah, it's a It was a a good moment and
- 1:09Speaker 1: a good question from from John At some levity to
- 1:13Speaker 1: it all. There wasn't a ton of you know, I
- 1:17Speaker 1: think the big news obviously was made right before Cups
- 1:20Speaker 1: convention Alex Bregman. And and that leads to more news,
- 1:26Speaker 1: I guess you could say. And and primarily the first thing.
- 1:30Speaker 1: What the person we wanted to talk to I think
- 1:34Speaker 1: the most was Nico Horner. And and he he spoke.
- 1:39Speaker 1: He he talked about the trade rumors. I thought he
- 1:45Speaker 1: handled it really well. I thought he ah, he understood why,
- 1:50Speaker 1: Like he kind of broke it down in baseball terms
- 1:52Speaker 1: before we like he explained it all like what we've
- 1:55Speaker 1: been saying. He's got one year left on his deal,
- 1:58Speaker 1: you know, like they out of an important player. He
- 2:02Speaker 1: doesn't have a no trade clause. It makes sense that
- 2:07Speaker 1: his name would come up. I came away from the
- 2:11Speaker 1: weekend thinking that Nico Horner is a part of this team,
- 2:15Speaker 1: without a doubt in my mind. I would right now.
- 2:18Speaker 1: I wouldn't have been shocked by it by a move.
- 2:22Speaker 1: I think I'd be shocked by a move now. Like
- 2:25Speaker 1: before the weekend, I was like, hmm, I wonder, I
- 2:28Speaker 1: wonder where their heads are at.
- 2:29Speaker 3: I wonder what's going on.
- 2:30Speaker 1: I'd be absolutely shocked by a move, and I'd be shocked,
- 2:33Speaker 1: like mainly because no team, I don't think we'll meet
- 2:37Speaker 1: the price of how much the Cubs of how you
- 2:39Speaker 1: Nico Horner?
- 2:41Speaker 2: Yeah, you had a good story in The Athletic that
- 2:43Speaker 2: I think had what dansby Swanson calling him irreplaceable and
- 2:47Speaker 2: then the line you threw in there about no team
- 2:50Speaker 2: values a Nico Horner as much as the Cubs, something
- 2:54Speaker 2: to that effect, and it very much rings true. You know,
- 3:02Speaker 2: Nico seems like someone who knows he has leverage here
- 3:05Speaker 2: and is a very good position. He doesn't have a
- 3:07Speaker 2: no trade clause, but he knows how his teammates view him,
- 3:12Speaker 2: his manager views him, how the front office does, by
- 3:15Speaker 2: and large view him, and that he will be going
- 3:19Speaker 2: into next winter, barring an extension, as one of the
- 3:23Speaker 2: top free agents out there, and he might be the
- 3:26Speaker 2: number one fit for the Cubs next winter. When you
- 3:29Speaker 2: look at that list of names, it's not particularly compelling.
- 3:35Speaker 2: The Cubs will need someone like Nico next year. And look,
- 3:42Speaker 2: the front office has to do this. They take calls,
- 3:45Speaker 2: they gauge interest, YadA, YadA, YadA. This is where you know,
- 3:51Speaker 2: we always joke with some of our colleagues of every
- 3:54Speaker 2: team needs a VP of common sense, and this person
- 3:57Speaker 2: just sits in a corner office by themselves most of
- 4:00Speaker 2: the time, doing like crossword puzzles, feed up on the desk.
- 4:04Speaker 2: Then you just walk in there like, hey, you think
- 4:05Speaker 2: we should trade Nico Horner, like no, it makes makes
- 4:09Speaker 2: no sense, and then move on. You might not need
- 4:11Speaker 2: this person again for a very long time, which is
- 4:14Speaker 2: how this team is constructed, the way it got here,
- 4:18Speaker 2: the intangible values he brings, and not just to this,
- 4:23Speaker 2: he has a very unique skill set that is just
- 4:25Speaker 2: like hard to replicate.
- 4:29Speaker 4: In this day and age. And so yeah, I'm with you.
- 4:32Speaker 4: I came away thinking.
- 4:34Speaker 2: He's staying in part because we got that hard confirmation
- 4:37Speaker 2: of they don't have to shed his salary to make
- 4:41Speaker 2: this work.
- 4:42Speaker 4: And when as.
- 4:44Speaker 2: We've asked this question, I think there's an understanding that
- 4:48Speaker 2: the Cubs have done stuff like this before, like even
- 4:51Speaker 2: last off season of getting Tucker and trading Bellinger, like
- 4:57Speaker 2: that sequence of moves is not required to board Alex Bregman.
- 5:02Speaker 2: So when you look at it that way, when you're
- 5:06Speaker 2: hearing that the Cubs essentially expect to go over the
- 5:09Speaker 2: luxury tax threshold, this year because they're already so close
- 5:14Speaker 2: it's almost inevitable unless the bottom falls out and they
- 5:17Speaker 2: start shedding salaries in July.
- 5:20Speaker 4: But that's not you know, that's not the operating assumption
- 5:23Speaker 4: at this point. And so I'd expect to see him
- 5:28Speaker 4: in Mesa.
- 5:30Speaker 1: Yeah, there, I think we We talked to Carter Hawkins
- 5:33Speaker 1: on Saturday. I wish I had the quote in front
- 5:36Speaker 1: of me, but I believe he said that the luxury
- 5:38Speaker 1: tax is not a consideration for them. It's not something
- 5:41Speaker 1: that they're like, it's not a hindrance. I can't remember
- 5:43Speaker 1: the wording you use, but essentially, don't don't worry about
- 5:46Speaker 1: the luxury tax right now.
- 5:48Speaker 3: As far as do.
- 5:49Speaker 1: The Cubs need to move Nico Horner because and shed
- 5:52Speaker 1: twelve million dollars or whatever the AAV would be to
- 5:55Speaker 1: get well under the luxury tax, it's not. That's not
- 5:58Speaker 1: why if he's moved won't be for that reason. It's
- 6:01Speaker 1: because some team said, we value Nico huck Nico Horner
- 6:06Speaker 1: like you guys valued Kyle Tucker last last winter, and
- 6:09Speaker 1: we're going to just throw an insane off.
- 6:12Speaker 3: Or your way.
- 6:14Speaker 1: There some things that I like, I think we will
- 6:17Speaker 1: explore in the next six months are like, what what
- 6:22Speaker 1: is Nico Horner's comp as far as an extension or
- 6:26Speaker 1: even open market value. He's such a unique player, it's
- 6:30Speaker 1: not easy to figure that out. At least recently. There's
- 6:33Speaker 1: not very many players like him where it's so it's
- 6:39Speaker 1: Louis Rise's offense, but he's so much more valuable than
- 6:44Speaker 1: Louis Arise because he's Louise A. Rise has no position
- 6:47Speaker 1: and he can't and he's got no speed. You know,
- 6:49Speaker 1: he can't run the bases, so he's Those are two
- 6:52Speaker 1: things that Nico Horner is not average at, elite at.
- 6:55Speaker 1: You know, he's great at those two things. So it's
- 6:58Speaker 1: not that's not even close to a comp. It's just
- 7:01Speaker 1: the offensive skill set. And then you have to take
- 7:04Speaker 1: in the fact that he's this elite second baseman who
- 7:07Speaker 1: can play shortstop and he's and he steals bases and
- 7:10Speaker 1: runs the base as well, And then you're not even
- 7:12Speaker 1: talking about the intangible value.
- 7:14Speaker 4: Right.
- 7:14Speaker 1: I don't know how that's going to be different with
- 7:17Speaker 1: every team. That's one thing I'm curious about. And then
- 7:20Speaker 1: the other thing is what is what makes more sense?
- 7:24Speaker 1: And these are things that I'll you know, we'll dig
- 7:27Speaker 1: into over the next over the summer, over the spring
- 7:30Speaker 1: and everything. But does it make sense to extend him
- 7:34Speaker 1: when you don't know what the CBA is or does
- 7:36Speaker 1: it make more sense to let him take that risk
- 7:38Speaker 1: and then you know what the CBA is and now
- 7:41Speaker 1: how he fits into the puzzle financially.
- 7:44Speaker 3: I don't know. I just don't know. These are things
- 7:46Speaker 3: that they have to weigh.
- 7:47Speaker 1: That they they'll you know, they have people the VP
- 7:50Speaker 1: of common Sense and the VP of Nerdery and all
- 7:54Speaker 1: this stuff. I just think it's these are the questions
- 7:57Speaker 1: that face them because now I think.
- 7:59Speaker 3: We need to move past the trade stuff.
- 8:01Speaker 1: I really do think it we feel safe in doing that,
- 8:05Speaker 1: move past the trade talk.
- 8:07Speaker 3: What is next for Niko Horner? Win? A World Series
- 8:10Speaker 3: in twenty twenty six is the first goal? Right?
- 8:13Speaker 1: And then what about extension talk? Is that something they're
- 8:15Speaker 1: gonna do in the spring? It does that make sense?
- 8:18Speaker 1: What are the comps? Those are the things that I like, like,
- 8:21Speaker 1: I think we need to do. Are the next steps
- 8:23Speaker 1: for us, for the Cubs, for everyone to kind of
- 8:26Speaker 1: figure out? But I also think trade talk isn't off
- 8:31Speaker 1: the table for the Cubs in general. Let's talk about
- 8:35Speaker 1: Matt Shaw. When let's take a quick break and talk
- 8:38Speaker 1: about Matt Shaw.
- 8:39Speaker 5: So Stephen, the holidays have come and gone, and while
- 8:42Speaker 5: it was great to spend time with family and friends
- 8:45Speaker 5: and to enjoy all the great times, you probably overspent
- 8:48Speaker 5: a little bit, as you do every year. But that
- 8:50Speaker 5: means with January here you may be looking at a
- 8:53Speaker 5: way to cut costs.
- 8:55Speaker 4: Yep, this time of the yearbody's looking to cut their budget.
- 8:57Speaker 4: Everybody's looking to save money. Somewhere Mobile and their incredible
- 9:01Speaker 4: deals are a great place.

- 9:37Speaker 6: dot com.
- 9:40Speaker 1: It seemed like matt Shaw was a little surprised by
- 9:46Speaker 1: the Alex Bregman edition. I believe he was sitting I
- 9:50Speaker 1: can't remember if he said he was sitting and watching
- 9:52Speaker 1: the football game.
- 9:53Speaker 3: Was he was with his wife?
- 9:55Speaker 4: Right?
- 9:56Speaker 1: He was with his wife and she got the alert
- 10:00Speaker 1: that Alex Bregman had been signed by the Cubs. Told
- 10:03Speaker 1: him and he was like, and at least what he
- 10:06Speaker 1: told us was like, he's like, huh, I wonder how
- 10:08Speaker 1: that what that means for me? I you know, that's
- 10:14Speaker 1: everyone handles it differently. Who knows exactly how it happened
- 10:18Speaker 1: went down? If that's exactly what happened, I'm a little
- 10:20Speaker 1: surprised he hadn't asked, like, hey, I'm hearing these Alex
- 10:24Speaker 1: Bregman rumors, like what would happen? Like at least contemplate
- 10:29Speaker 1: that a little bit. There must someone, even if you're
- 10:33Speaker 1: the type that doesn't check the news or check the rumors,
- 10:37Speaker 1: someone texts you. Someone does. Like that's just how it
- 10:40Speaker 1: always works. And these guys always say it, I don't
- 10:42Speaker 1: read the news, but people text me. You know, people
- 10:45Speaker 1: take screenshots of m willb trade rumors and send it
- 10:48Speaker 1: to you know, their their brother or their you know,
- 10:52Speaker 1: nephew or whatever it is, and and and that's how
- 10:55Speaker 1: you hear about it, even if you're not the type
- 10:57Speaker 1: to read it. But uh, you know, whether it came
- 11:01Speaker 1: to him as a complete surprise or not, like he's
- 11:03Speaker 1: he's now, you know, Matt Shaw super utility man for now,
- 11:11Speaker 1: it's just kind of interesting what what his future holds.
- 11:14Speaker 1: I think he'd be a really valuable super utility guy.
- 11:16Speaker 1: I think he's got a ton of potential. But I
- 11:20Speaker 1: also don't feel secure in saying he's one hundred percent
- 11:23Speaker 1: going to be on this team come you know, opening day.
- 11:28Speaker 2: It sure seemed like Nico was aware or made aware
- 11:32Speaker 2: when the trade rumors started to surface again in media reports,
- 11:38Speaker 2: including our own on the Athletic during the winter meetings.
- 11:42Speaker 4: And so.
- 11:44Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, Shaw's I guess a little different in
- 11:48Speaker 2: that regard, you know. He it was fortunate for him
- 11:53Speaker 2: that Alex Bregman did not sign with the Cubs last
- 11:56Speaker 2: spring training, and that created an opportunity for him, and
- 12:00Speaker 2: he eventually took hold of that job. Obviously, he needed
- 12:04Speaker 2: a detour back to Iowa. I just think we're going
- 12:11Speaker 2: to until like they get to Arizona. Jed does his
- 12:17Speaker 2: press conference and says something like, you know, this is
- 12:19Speaker 2: kind of our team.
- 12:22Speaker 4: I think the Shaw rumors are not going to go away.
- 12:25Speaker 2: I think his value from an analytic perspective, and you
- 12:29Speaker 2: just look at a pre arbitration player, how long he's
- 12:31Speaker 2: under club control, the versatility, the fact that he can
- 12:36Speaker 2: play on the dirt, which is his preference. I mean,
- 12:41Speaker 2: this guy could be an everyday third baseman on most
- 12:46Speaker 2: teams willing to give him that sort of run.
- 12:51Speaker 4: And so you know, I'm with you.
- 12:58Speaker 2: I'm not sure how much to or Brits some of
- 13:00Speaker 2: his stuff at a Cubs convention camera because I'm with you, Like,
- 13:04Speaker 2: I thought it was a little odd, but.
- 13:06Speaker 4: You know, maybe maybe we're reading a little bit too
- 13:11Speaker 4: much into it.
- 13:11Speaker 2: But like there's kind of no mistaking that the Cubs
- 13:15Speaker 2: are still in listening mode here and they don't think
- 13:17Speaker 2: they're done with their rosters.
- 13:19Speaker 4: So when you have that in play, you just you
- 13:24Speaker 4: just can't dismiss it. Yeah.
- 13:26Speaker 1: I think Counsel had a quote that said he you
- 13:30Speaker 1: don't have got to keep it.
- 13:31Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 13:31Speaker 6: Uh.
- 13:32Speaker 3: Jed was talking.
- 13:34Speaker 1: It was either with us or when he was on
- 13:36Speaker 1: the stage talk like talking to Boog. There was something
- 13:39Speaker 1: about like you're you're always trying to improve. We're not
- 13:42Speaker 1: done yet, Crank Kenny, I think said that on the radio.
- 13:46Speaker 1: Nobody sounds like they're ready to, you know, close the
- 13:50Speaker 1: door on any moves, whether that's filling out the bench,
- 13:54Speaker 1: adding non roster invites. They you know, they they'll continue
- 13:58Speaker 1: to do stuff like that or something bigger. And you
- 14:03Speaker 1: cannot rule out a big trade for match Shaw.
- 14:06Speaker 3: You're right.
- 14:06Speaker 1: I think he's valuable in an analytic sense, and then
- 14:10Speaker 1: numbers wise, like you know, the overall offensive numbers weren't great,
- 14:14Speaker 1: but he had a great second half.
- 14:16Speaker 3: He's a rookie.
- 14:17Speaker 1: He was a rookie, he was a goal glove finalist,
- 14:23Speaker 1: showed that he was improving over the course of the year.
- 14:27Speaker 1: Former top thirty prospect consensus, So like these are like,
- 14:33Speaker 1: he's got a lot of the pedigree that says, no,
- 14:36Speaker 1: you know, this guy's really valuable. Now does that get
- 14:40Speaker 1: you a superstar in return straight up or something like that,
- 14:43Speaker 1: or does it get you some really good prospects? You know,
- 14:48Speaker 1: what are the Cubs looking for? What do they want?
- 14:52Speaker 1: Maybe it makes the most sense to keep match Shaw.
- 14:55Speaker 1: I think the other question is, okay, you keep him,
- 14:58Speaker 1: how do you fit him into this role.
- 15:01Speaker 3: Uh, that was a question I had.
- 15:02Speaker 1: We got an answer almost immediately during the Bregmann presser
- 15:06Speaker 1: when we talked to Jed afterwards.
- 15:07Speaker 3: He's going to be playing the outfield.
- 15:09Speaker 2: Uh.
- 15:10Speaker 1: And and you were right you you brought it up.
- 15:13Speaker 1: And and the hobby comp like there's a way to
- 15:15Speaker 1: make this work. You just kind of put them all
- 15:18Speaker 1: over the place.
- 15:19Speaker 3: Now.
- 15:20Speaker 1: You ask Niko Horner, you asked Dansby Swanson if they
- 15:22Speaker 1: want days off, you may get a pretty dirty look.
- 15:25Speaker 1: I felt like when Nko was asked that he was
- 15:28Speaker 1: he was ready to fight.
- 15:29Speaker 3: Uh.
- 15:30Speaker 1: And Dansby laughed. It was like, the cowns will put
- 15:33Speaker 1: you up. They don't want days off. Guess what they're
- 15:36Speaker 1: gonna get days off because Greg Council believes in rest.
- 15:40Speaker 1: He believes in giving these guys days off. There are
- 15:44Speaker 1: arguments to be made that some of these guys in
- 15:47Speaker 1: previous seasons have gotten worn down. You just need to
- 15:52Speaker 1: you need to give him some rest. And if he's
- 15:54Speaker 1: going to play the corner outfield spots too. Mattrow was
- 15:56Speaker 1: telling us that the last time he played daily in
- 16:00Speaker 1: in the outfield, he was playing center field. He is
- 16:02Speaker 1: an athletic guy, He's he's a good ballplayer. He's he
- 16:06Speaker 1: proved how quickly he can adjust to a really difficult
- 16:09Speaker 1: position at third base. Maybe he can play all over
- 16:14Speaker 1: really and and then if he starts to hit, then
- 16:17Speaker 1: you have someone that can also occasionally d h. He
- 16:21Speaker 1: has the potential to be really valuable for this team.
- 16:25Speaker 1: But if an offer comes along, it's it's it's a
- 16:29Speaker 1: It's a lesser situation than Nico in the sense that
- 16:32Speaker 1: I don't think it's impossible to meet the asking price here,
- 16:34Speaker 1: or almost impossible to meet the asking price here, But
- 16:37Speaker 1: it would be a nice it would be a nice
- 16:39Speaker 1: return for Matchhaw. So you have to weigh that. You
- 16:44Speaker 1: have to keep that in mind. What do the Cubs
- 16:48Speaker 1: consider their exact needs. You know, that's not totally clear,
- 16:54Speaker 1: but you know, whether it's trading match are keeping him.
- 16:58Speaker 3: I think there's value to both situations.
- 17:00Speaker 1: But I believe that Craig Council feels very comfortable with
- 17:04Speaker 1: the idea of using him as a super utility guy,
- 17:06Speaker 1: and probably would be able is one of you know,
- 17:09Speaker 1: one of the managers you'd want to be able to
- 17:11Speaker 1: kind of lead that and and do it properly. And
- 17:15Speaker 1: and I think this is a smaller thing, and it's
- 17:18Speaker 1: just something I think it's worth mentioning.
- 17:21Speaker 3: But a lot of times.
- 17:21Speaker 1: When you have guys like this and you're like, oh,
- 17:25Speaker 1: are they going to get annoyed being in this role?
- 17:27Speaker 1: Are they going to not be able to handle this role?
- 17:29Speaker 1: Are they going to cause problems? There's a lot of
- 17:33Speaker 1: leaders in that clubhouse and Craig Council has a lot
- 17:35Speaker 1: of respect in that clubhouse for those two reasons primarily.
- 17:40Speaker 1: And I don't think Matt Shaw's the type that was
- 17:43Speaker 1: going that would do that. He's he's pretty young, Like
- 17:47Speaker 1: it's pretty hard to be done, but he was handed.
- 17:49Speaker 2: A job last year contender, like yeah, learning a new
- 17:53Speaker 2: position on the fly. Like, I think he's been given
- 17:56Speaker 2: a lot of latitude and opportunity. And we'll say this,
- 18:04Speaker 2: what he did last year learning how to play third
- 18:07Speaker 2: base was very impressive. And I do think when the
- 18:12Speaker 2: Cup say, hey, this guy can play all over, I
- 18:14Speaker 2: believe it. I don't think that's just hype or sort
- 18:18Speaker 2: of bluffing here. Like I don't playing center field as
- 18:24Speaker 2: petek ro Armstrong's replacement on every day basis may be difficult,
- 18:29Speaker 2: but moving around the outfield, playing second, playing third, I
- 18:36Speaker 2: could totally see that happening. And look you have Jed
- 18:41Speaker 2: and Counsel both at different points saying we were extremely
- 18:46Speaker 2: fortunate last year to stay as healthy.
- 18:48Speaker 4: As we did.
- 18:50Speaker 2: Really overall, but particularly on the position player side. We'll
- 18:53Speaker 2: take out Justin Steele's elbow injury.
- 18:57Speaker 4: Shoda had something.
- 18:58Speaker 2: But otherwise it was a pretty good group. And all
- 19:01Speaker 2: it takes is Pete running into a brick wall at Wrigley. Sayah,
- 19:06Speaker 2: the super aggressive swing feels something in his oblique concussions, hamstrings,
- 19:13Speaker 2: like all this stuff. I mean, guys who are getting
- 19:18Speaker 2: into their thirties thinking of Bregman and Swanson, like is
- 19:23Speaker 2: playing one hundred and sixty ish games realistic? They will say, yes,
- 19:30Speaker 2: you know, Nico has turned around kind of the per perception,
- 19:36Speaker 2: but he was known as sort of an injury prong
- 19:38Speaker 2: player earlier in his career, and it took some trial
- 19:40Speaker 2: and error to sort of, it seemed like, to get
- 19:42Speaker 2: to the right sort of body type, weight maintenance program
- 19:49Speaker 2: to where he can be that everyday gold glove guy.
- 19:52Speaker 2: But you know, I was in the camp last offseason
- 19:57Speaker 2: that I thought, you keep Cody Bellen and you're just
- 20:01Speaker 2: have coverage everywhere you mix a match. Obviously, financially, Baseball
- 20:07Speaker 2: Operations was not allowed to make that happen.
- 20:10Speaker 4: So as tempting as it may be to.
- 20:12Speaker 2: Trade Shaw to get some young pitching or whatever sort
- 20:16Speaker 2: of you know, holes they see and in their organization,
- 20:19Speaker 2: I still think you trade him and something bad probably
- 20:23Speaker 2: happens injury wise, and and you're scrambling.
- 20:27Speaker 4: And Counsel made that point like we don't have enough,
- 20:29Speaker 4: like he was.
- 20:31Speaker 2: I would have liked to get his thoughts, you know,
- 20:35Speaker 2: a little more on that, but he's saying. He seemed
- 20:37Speaker 2: to go there pretty quick, you know, like sometimes he
- 20:41Speaker 2: just answers whatever he wants to say, or like he'll
- 20:44Speaker 2: sort of dismiss the question.
- 20:46Speaker 4: But that was a like have you seen the roster?
- 20:48Speaker 4: We don't have enough?
- 20:49Speaker 2: Like that was basically, you know, it was very quickly
- 20:52Speaker 2: into his first media session since the Winter meetings. You know,
- 20:58Speaker 2: they just signed Alex Bregman, and it's like, you know,
- 21:01Speaker 2: the city's alive for the Bears and the tenure in
- 21:03Speaker 2: the World Series team, and councilors just like I have
- 21:05Speaker 2: you've seen the roster?
- 21:06Speaker 4: We don't have enough. So that's what I imagine.
- 21:08Speaker 2: It's sort of the operating philosophy right now in the
- 21:12Speaker 2: front office.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yeah, I think they can use some outfield depth. You know,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you can say Matt Shaw's outfield depth, but he hasn't played.
- 21:20Speaker 3: There big leagues. He hasn't played there in the minors.
- 21:23Speaker 1: You can say Kevin al Contra's outfield depth. Sure, he's
- 21:27Speaker 1: really talented, but unproven player. So like, those are risky
- 21:32Speaker 1: depth pieces because you don't know what type of outfielder
- 21:36Speaker 1: Match Shaw is and you really don't know what type
- 21:38Speaker 1: of major league player Kevin al Contra is. So yeah,
- 21:42Speaker 1: keep adding depth, keep looking to improve this roster. I mean,
- 21:46Speaker 1: that's what they did in twenty sixteen and it led
- 21:50Speaker 1: to obvious success.
- 21:53Speaker 3: I think that should be the goal here.
- 21:55Speaker 1: You know, we don't need to you don't need to
- 21:58Speaker 1: be doom and gloom and assume Thegers are inevitable and
- 22:02Speaker 1: just going to win the World Series. This is a
- 22:04Speaker 1: real contender. Keep improving and see what happens. And I
- 22:08Speaker 1: think they have a chance to make real noise. Uh,
- 22:12Speaker 1: first time in a while where you feel pretty confident
- 22:14Speaker 1: saying that coming into the season and you just keep
- 22:17Speaker 1: adding to it. I think Council is absolutely right. All right,
- 22:20Speaker 1: we'll be back later this week with another episode. Thanks
- 22:22Speaker 1: so much for listening to everyone. This is Northside Territory.
