- 0:12Hello friends, it's shown here. Welcome to another day where you
- 0:17have joined me so that we can do this thing that we do reading a
- 0:21chapter of the Bible at this A Chapter a Day Bible Reading
- 0:24podcast. Today it is the 4th of April and
- 0:29this is well, it's a bit of a serious day.
- 0:31This is the United Nations Day, the International Day for Mine
- 0:36Awareness. This is the day where only since
- 0:40last year actually the UN have said enough is enough.
- 0:43Let us remember every year on this day campaign and make a bit
- 0:48of noise to say countries that are still using land mines
- 0:52enough's enough. There are still did you realise
- 0:5468 countries in the world that have got the remnant of war and
- 0:59unexploded landmines sitting, waiting waiting in their
- 1:04countries to hurt innocent people going about their daily
- 1:07lives? And still in Burma and the
- 1:10Ukraine and the Yemen, more landmines are being laid as war
- 1:14plays out there. So today is a day that people
- 1:17say enough is enough. And if you want to find out
- 1:20more, I'm sure a quick Internet search will give you all the
- 1:23information you need. Ah yes, for peace in our world
- 1:28where innocent people are not hurt by the remnants of war.
- 1:32That being said, boy, we are having a war tastic time in
- 1:36Second Samuel, aren't we? Chasing people with Spears and
- 1:40killing each other. Hard, dear, this is what
- 1:43happened. This was the tussle as David was
- 1:47trying to set himself up to take on the throne of Israel, not
- 1:52just the throne of Judah. And that will continue today and
- 1:56move toward the point where David can finally ascend to the
- 1:59throne. But we're not quite there yet.
- 2:02More of that to come as we see God's big narrative playing out
- 2:07to get his man to begin this dynasty that will bring us the
- 2:14Easter resurrection story. Yep, it all starts well.
- 2:18Didn't start here, but it all continued through this story
- 2:22that will read together today in Second Samuel chapter 3.
- 2:36That was the beginning of a long war between those who were loyal
- 2:40to Saul and those loyal to David.
- 2:44As time passed, David became stronger and stronger, while
- 2:48Saul's dynasty became weaker and weaker.
- 2:52These are the sons who were born to David and Hebron.
- 2:55The oldest was Amnon, whose mother was a high norm from
- 2:59Jezreel. The second was Daniel, whose
- 3:02mother was Abigail, the widow of Nabel from Carmel.
- 3:06The third was Absalom, whose mother was Marca, the daughter
- 3:11of Talmai, king of Geshur. The fourth was Adonijah, whose
- 3:16mother was Haggith. The fifth was chef attire, whose
- 3:19mother was Abital. The 6th was Etherium, whose
- 3:23mother was Egla, David's wife. These sons were all born to
- 3:29David and Hebron. As the war between the House of
- 3:33Saul and the House of David went on, Abner became a powerful
- 3:36leader among those loyal to Saul.
- 3:39One day, Ishbosheth Saul's son accused Abner of sleeping with
- 3:43one of his father's concubines. A woman named Rizpah, daughter
- 3:48of Aya Abner, was furious. Am I some Judean dog to be
- 3:53kicked around like this? He shouted.
- 3:55After all I've done for your father, Saul and his family and
- 3:59friends by not handing you over to David?
- 4:02Is this my reward? That you find fault with me
- 4:05about this woman? May God strike me and even kill
- 4:09me if I don't do anything I can to help David get what the Lord
- 4:13has promised him. I'm going to take Saul's Kingdom
- 4:16and give it to David. I will establish the throne of
- 4:20David over Israel as well as Judah, all the way from Dan in
- 4:24the north to Beersheba in the South.
- 4:27Ishbosheth didn't dare say another word because he was
- 4:30afraid of what Abner might do. Then Abner sent messengers to
- 4:35David, saying, Doesn't the entire land belong to you?
- 4:39Make a solemn pact with me and I will help turn over all of
- 4:44Israel to you. All right, David replied.
- 4:48But I will not negotiate with you unless you bring back my
- 4:51wife, Michael Saul's daughter when you come.
- 4:55David then sent this message to Ishbosheth Saul's son.
- 5:00Give me back my wife, Michael, for I bought her with the lives
- 5:03of 100 Philistines. O Ishbosheth took Michael away
- 5:08from her husband, Palti, son of leash Ulty, followed along
- 5:13behind her as far as Bahram, weeping as he went.
- 5:17Then Abner told him go back home, so Paltry returned.
- 5:23Meanwhile, Abner had consulted with the elders of Israel for
- 5:27some time. Now he told them, you have
- 5:29wanted to make David your king. Now is the time for the Lord has
- 5:34said, I have chosen David to save my people, Israel, from the
- 5:38hands of the Philistines and from all their other enemies.
- 5:43Abner also spoke with the men of Benjamin.
- 5:45Then he went to Hebron to tell David that all the people of
- 5:49Israel and Benjamin had agreed to support him.
- 5:53When Abner and twenty of his men came to Hebron, David
- 5:57entertained them with the great feast.
- 5:59Then Abner said to David, Let me go and call an assembly of all
- 6:04Israel to support my Lord the king.
- 6:07They will make a covenant with you to make you their king, and
- 6:11you will rule over everything your heart desires, said David
- 6:16sent Abner safely on his way. But just after David had sent
- 6:21Abner away in safety, Joe, ABB, and some of David's troops
- 6:24returned from a raid, bringing much plunder with them.
- 6:28When Joab arrived, he was told that Abner had just been there
- 6:32visiting the King and had been sent away in safety.
- 6:35Joe Abbie rushed to the King and demanded, what have you done?
- 6:40What do you mean by letting Abner get away?
- 6:42You know perfectly well that he came to spy on you and find out
- 6:46everything you're doing. Joe then left David and sent
- 6:50messengers to catch up with Abner, asking him to return.
- 6:54They found him at the Well of Syrah and brought him back,
- 6:59though David knew nothing about it.
- 7:01When Abner arrived back at Hebron, Joab took him aside at
- 7:05the gateway, as if to speak with him privately.
- 7:08But then he stabbed Abner in the stomach and killed him in
- 7:12revenge for killing his brother Asahel.
- 7:16When David heard about it, he declared.
- 7:18I vowed by the Lord that I and my Kingdom are forever innocent
- 7:23of this crime against Abner, son of Nair, Joab and his family are
- 7:28the guilty ones. May the family of Joab be cursed
- 7:32in every generation with a man who has open sores or leprosy,
- 7:37or who walks on crutches or dies by the sword or begs for food.
- 7:43So Joab and his brother Abishai killed Abner because Abner had
- 7:48killed their brother Asahel at the battle of Gibeon.
- 7:52Then David said to Joab, and all those who were with him.
- 7:56Tear your clothes and put on burlap, mourn for Abner, and
- 8:01King David himself walked behind the procession to the grave.
- 8:05They buried Abner in Hebron, and the king and all the people wept
- 8:10at his graveside. Then the king sang this funeral
- 8:13song for Abner. Should Abner have died as fools
- 8:18die? Your hands were not bound.
- 8:21Your feet were not chained. No, You were murdered, The
- 8:25victim of a wicked plot. All the people wept again for
- 8:30Abner. David had refused to eat
- 8:33anything on the day of the funeral and now everyone begged
- 8:36him to eat. But David had made a vow saying
- 8:39May God strike me and even kill me if I eat anything before
- 8:43sundown. This pleases the people very
- 8:47much. In fact, everything the king did
- 8:50pleased them. So everyone in Judah and all
- 8:53Israel understood that David was not responsible for Abner's
- 8:57murder. Then King David said to his
- 9:00officials, Don't you realise that a great commander has
- 9:03fallen today in Israel? And even though I am the
- 9:07anointed king, these two sons of Jeremiah, Joab and Abishai are
- 9:13too strong for me to control. So may the Lord repay these evil
- 9:19men for their evil deeds? No, Father.
- 9:31You've got our backs. You see each of our days, you
- 9:37see the way that we interact with others, and you know where
- 9:41we've been wronged or harmed or treated unfairly.
- 9:46And you've got our backs. You are the God of justice.
- 9:50The long arc of time bends toward your justice.
- 9:56Justice is yours to bring about. Help us to let go of our anger,
- 10:02to let go of our desire for vengeance or our desire to pay
- 10:07back what has done to us, but instead to rest, to rest in your
- 10:13embrace, knowing that you've got it covered.
- 10:18That in your good time your will will be done in everything.
- 10:25And thank you for Jesus. Thank you that he gave up
- 10:30everything for us so that we would know that you are a God of
- 10:33love who comes to us in our need, where we are this very
- 10:39day, with love and forgiveness and an invitation to come to
- 10:46you, our Saviour and our God. We love you and we worship you
- 10:52and we pray all these things in Jesus name.
- 10:55Ah man.
