- 0:04This production is brought to you by the Reesa's Gull. I'm here talking with
- 0:09Jason Muse, who performing with Kevin Smith Sunday, April twenty eighth at the
- 0:13Paramount in Huntington as part of their Jay and Silent. Bob get old toward
- 0:17Jay. This is such an honor. How are you doing, buddy,
- 0:21I'm very good, very good. I get so nervous and starstruck when talking
- 0:26to celebrities. Is there a moment in your career where you were sharing the
- 0:31screen or the stage with somebody and you're just incomplete awe of like, oh
- 0:35my god, I can't believe I'm with this guy right now. I mean,
- 0:39oh my gosh. Honestly, you know, the good thing is,
- 0:42I feel like there's been many. Sorry, so there's been many, honestly
- 0:48over the years, like getting to work with Will Ferrell, Chris Rock all
- 0:52of them. Is I'm always feeling a little you know, I guess awkward
- 0:57and stuff. But but you know it's like usually we're doing a scene together
- 1:02or whatever, and I sort of, I guess I just try to get
- 1:06in there. But yes, I would say the one that stands out to
- 1:10me is, you know, it's things, because over the years people are
- 1:14always like, oh my gosh, what was it like hanging out with George
- 1:17Carlin and stuff? You know. That one for me was like, like
- 1:21I admired George Carlin because Kevin would talk about him so much, and I
- 1:25knew who he was, and I know he's a genius and all that.
- 1:27But I when I was with him and Kevin, they would like have these
- 1:33conversations and they both use you know, like big words, and they would
- 1:38talk about his book, and they would talk about some of his stand up,
- 1:42like Kevin knew his stand up. Kevin knew everything like Kevin watched and
- 1:46read and everything about George. So they would have these conversations and I would
- 1:49stand there next to them, and I wouldn't have anything to, you know,
- 1:56involve myself in the conversation, so I would just stand and listen.
- 2:00And so I would say, out of most of people like someone like him.
- 2:06Honestly, he was someone that it was really awesome to work with and
- 2:09stuff. But I felt like I've really never had like a loan, Like
- 2:14I never really had a great conversation with them because I was in I was
- 2:17like intimidated by him and stuff. I didn't feel like I had anything smart
- 2:22to say or anything funny to say to him, So but definitely him,
- 2:25And then I would definitely say Stanley. You know, Stanley was was our
- 2:30first studio movie, maulrat You know, we did Clerks, but Clerks was
- 2:35just a bunch of friends. But Malratz was the first time We're in Minnesota.
- 2:39We're staying in a hotel where you know, there's wardrobe and stunt guys
- 2:44and and stan Lee is like I was reading. That's how Kevin and I
- 2:46really started bonding over comic books, and like, now here I am getting
- 2:52to meet Stanley and it was so still real to me. Like so that
- 2:55was my first like, oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm meeting Stanley
- 3:00and this is so surreal. And I chatted with him a little bit and
- 3:02stuff like that. But George Carlin, I would say, is the one
- 3:06who like I felt like, oh my gosh, I mean, but there's
- 3:08so many Again, I got the Luke Scott, like you know, Mark
- 3:13Hamill, Carry Fishers, Kerry Fisher. Yeah, like but again them,
- 3:16I feel like carry Fisher. I was able to sit and chat with and
- 3:20have a great We had a couple of great conversations. Same with Mark Hamill,
- 3:23Like, I don't know, there's like I feel like there was most
- 3:28of the people like I would feel intimidated, but I would. I would,
- 3:30I felt like I had something to contribute to the conversation. But with
- 3:35George Carlin, I just was super nervous. I felt like I didn't have
- 3:38anything that I could contribute and I just never really got to have like a
- 3:43moment with him. So but yeah, those again, I hope that makes
- 3:46sense that yeah, yeah, no, that makes sense. Now you mentioned
- 3:49stan Lee and Kevin Smith was was sort of a pioneer with having the stan
- 3:53Lee cameo because that every Marvel movie, you know, while he was alive,
- 3:59you would see this dan Lee camo. Is there a Marvel property that
- 4:02you think is the top of the class, you know? Is it the
- 4:06X Men? Is it Spider Man? And have you been keeping up with
- 4:11any of these, you know, shows and movies that have been coming out
- 4:14lately. You know, the X Men animated show just came back a few
- 4:16weeks ago and it has been really good. You watching any of them?
- 4:20Excited? Well, you know what, I watched the first episode and I
- 4:25thought they were going to put them all out at the same time. So
- 4:27I watched the first one thinking i'd get the binge watch, but I realized
- 4:30they weren't putting them all out, So I'm honestly I want to wait because
- 4:33I love it. Like I'll be on. I know it sounds so goofy,
- 4:38but seriously, like when the opening started with the music and like,
- 4:41seriously brought me back to my childhood, like I loved watching that the original
- 4:46back then I'd watched. I've seen every episode multiple times, so I'm just
- 4:50saying, so, yes, I watched the first episode and I'm very excited
- 4:55about it, but I really don't want to wait till each week, so
- 4:58I want to wait till they all come out, and I'm just gonna binge
- 5:00watch all of them. But yeah, I mean, I pretty much.
- 5:02I try to keep up. You know, I've watched I started watching Echo
- 5:09recently, you know, because I love Vintatinofria. I think he's amazing,
- 5:13so I can't wait, like I'm waiting. So I started watching Echo,
- 5:16but I haven't got to finish it yet. But yeah, I've I've watched
- 5:19all the TV shows, I watched all the movies. I mean, I
- 5:24enjoy all of them. I don't think there's a bad one, honestly,
- 5:26because even if I feel like, oh man, this wasn't up to like
- 5:30I was expecting more and I thought it was going to be better, but
- 5:33it's still is exciting to me because again I watch I think about way back
- 5:39in the day, I remember going to comic conventions in like ninety eight and
- 5:44like seeing the Fantastic Four movie, you know, someone boot like the VHS
- 5:48and you could buy it at one of the boots, and then watching it
- 5:51and that this the you know, the special effects were so bhead and the
- 5:57movie, but it was still like, oh my gosh, there's a fantastic
- 6:00for live action movie. And then The Punisher with Dolph Lungdren but he didn't
- 6:03even have the skull, you know, he didn't even have the skull like
- 6:06the Outfitter. But it still was exciting that they were attempting to do it.
- 6:11And here we are years and years later, like well just saying for
- 6:15me to for them to have comic book movies, live action movies, all
- 6:18the comic books that grew up reading, to have all these movies and get
- 6:21to see all these characters like I used to what I used to. I
- 6:26remember watching, uh in the beginning when the movies first came out, you
- 6:30know, the X Men movie came out. I feel like it's one of
- 6:32the first. Like they had these little like up in the up in the
- 6:38screen on the TV and the bar they would be there would be a scene
- 6:42between two characters and then the top it would say Hank McCoy you know,
- 6:46which I knew was the beat. Yeah, but like no one else did,
- 6:48Like no one else didn't know comics knew what it was. I mean,
- 6:51people who knew comics did, of course, But like that excited me
- 6:55because I'm like, yeah, this is my world, Like this is my
- 6:57I mean, and now you know, since Avengers and everything, like so
- 7:00many people love comics know more about comics and it's a different time now.
- 7:04But yeah, so anyway, I know, again, I don't know if
- 7:08I answered your question. You answered several questions, but yeah, it is
- 7:12crazy that you know, you go to a target, you go to a
- 7:14Walmart, you see you know, uh, you know, you know,
- 7:17mom and pop and then you see, you know, a teenage girl all
- 7:20wearing like Captain America's shirts. It's certainly a different time. If I when
- 7:24I was growing up, you know, I was one of the few people
- 7:27wearing a green lantern shirt to school, and you know, you get bullied
- 7:30for it. But now you know, you're just one of the you know,
- 7:32normal people now if you're if you're rocking superhero memorabilia. And I think
- 7:39that's a smart idea though, what you're saying with the The X Men show
- 7:42and and uh binging it because every week it sort of ends and I just
- 7:48cannot wait for the next week. So avoid spoilers at all costs. But
- 7:54I'm telling you, Jay, this is better written and I think a better
- 7:58show than an original sho from the early nineties. It's it's really high quality
- 8:03stuff. So I think you're gonna run. Yeah. My one friends where
- 8:05he texted me going, hey, did you watch episode I don't remember if
- 8:09it was five, Episode five is the one? Yeah. Yeah. He's
- 8:13like, it's probably the best episode of television out there right now. And
- 8:16I was like, really, it's that good. He was, I'm not
- 8:18kidding you. I was like, well, I can't wait to see it,
- 8:20but I'm waiting. Yeah. It was one of those uh you know,
- 8:26you just stuck watching the credits with your jaw open just in awe that
- 8:31they actually went that And we're not going to spoil anything, but it is
- 8:33insane that they went that route. You mentioned Vincent Inafrio. Now I know
- 8:39Kevin Smith has said that Nicholas Cage is an actor that he would love to
- 8:43work with to direct. Is there somebody you can even pick, somebody that's
- 8:46dead or live that you would love the opportunity to share the screen with.
- 8:52Oh, I mean, I I would want to say, I guess Vincent
- 8:56oub but I feel like i'd be if I was doing a scene with him.
- 9:01I would feel, you know, nervous that I'm going to mess up
- 9:03my part and like it would upset him, and and I don't know,
- 9:07so like it's like I think of all these things, but I guess him.
- 9:11I mean, honestly, I really really dig him, not just because
- 9:15of the because he's the kingpin, but I've watched Law and Order Criminal Intent,
- 9:20like over and over again. It's like one of my favorite shows.
- 9:24Or I would say, you know who is Honestly, it's goofy, But
- 9:28I'm a huge murder she wrote fan and I would love to work with Jessica
- 9:31Fletcher, which isn't her real name, Angela Lansbery. I know it's I
- 9:35know it's such a weird pool, but it's I just think she's like,
- 9:39I don't know that show, like I used to watch Out My mom My
- 9:43Mom's Past now, but that's the show we used to watch together, and
- 9:46I still love this show. Every once in a while go on Peacock and
- 9:50watch it over again, even though I've seen it a bunch of times.
- 9:52So I don't know. I would say, if I'm going for someone like
- 9:56classic for me, Angela Lansbury someone now, I'll just throw out Vincent Zenoffrio.
- 10:03But there's many. I'm sure there's there's many. Like you know,
- 10:05I go to comic conventions and it's so surreal to me now even I've done
- 10:11a bunch, But like I'll go in the green room and all of a
- 10:13sudden it'll be like William Shatner, Brust Campbell, Vincent Zenoffio, and I
- 10:16always get intimidated and I'll leave the green room. Like a lot of people
- 10:20hang out and sit down at the table and like eat lunch and stuff with
- 10:24everybody, and I'm always like I still even though I'm there, like I'm
- 10:28I have the green room pass but I still feel like I don't belong there.
- 10:33You're an outsider. That's sort of like maybe how you felt with the
- 10:37George Carlin thing, like you don't belong exactly exactly. No, I still
- 10:41think I've been doing it thirty years and I still you know, I still
- 10:45feel I just don't feel I still feel like like I don't fit into the
- 10:50to the world, even though you know, we've done tons of stuff and
- 10:54I love doing what I do. It's like I got to direct. I
- 10:56don't know if you know, you know, I directed one movie so far.
- 11:01I directed a movie called Madness in the Method, and I got to
- 11:05direct stan Lee before he passed. Wow, he did a cameo in my
- 11:09movie, and that was really amazing for me, Like, not only that
- 11:13he was in my movie that I'm directing, but I actually got to direct
- 11:16him and and and he came down and hung out for a couple hours,
- 11:20and that was pretty surreal for me. But yeah, so you mentioned the
- 11:24comic conventions. You know, I'm a big you know, convention guy.
- 11:28I actually just went to a convention in New Jersey to meet a bunch of
- 11:33athletes and the one guy I idolized you know. His name's Drew Bletzo.
- 11:37He's a football player from back in the day. And I drove, you
- 11:41know, two and a half hours to meet him. I spent all this
- 11:43money to meet him and you just sort of walk up to him, you
- 11:46shake his hand, and then you know, he spent like twenty seconds with
- 11:50me. So when people meet you at a convention, I guess it really
- 11:54depends, like do you have time to really chat with them or is that
- 11:58sort of the norm, like you just have to, you know, take
- 12:00the picture, sign the autograph, move on. I feel like you'd be
- 12:03more personable though, No, yeah, no, I mean honestly, just
- 12:07to get his back. It depends. Here's my thought is I feel like
- 12:11I have time because I usually what I'll do is I'll sit and chat with
- 12:16someone and if they start to go like like five minutes, it depends.
- 12:20I feel like if it's a busy convention, I mean, you gotta think
- 12:24I always feel bad because you'll see people lined up for people like, I
- 12:28don't know if this person you're talking about how to line waiting around the door
- 12:31and he's only there one day. Of course he's got to be quick because
- 12:35he's got to get through the other two hundred people. If he spends ten
- 12:39minutes with you, yeah, he's not going to be able to spend ten
- 12:41minutes for everyone. Otherwise the show is going to be like, hey,
- 12:45we're closing, everyone has to leave. So I always feel but like when
- 12:48we do photos, it's like that when you do the professional photos, if
- 12:52you have three hundred people, you only have like a two hour window to
- 12:54take three hundred pictures. And I know Kevin does always feels bad because people
- 13:00will come in and they've been waiting in line for an hour and then they're
- 13:03like all right, and you take a pose, they take the picture,
- 13:07they're like next and they scoot outa you barely get to say hello. But
- 13:11again, it stinks, but at the same time, it's you have to
- 13:16get through everyone. There was one time where we literally went over and they
- 13:20were closing and we didn't even get to get to the last like twenty people,
- 13:24and we winded up being like, I'm sorry, can we go outside,
- 13:26We'll take some selfies with you. But it just didn't. So I'm
- 13:31just saying, unless if he didn't have a line and he didn't spend five
- 13:33minutes to you, then that's a bummer. I feel like that's you know,
- 13:37there was no one behind you, or even let be five people behind
- 13:39you. I feel like when there's not a lot of people waiting, like
- 13:43if it's a slower show, I'll sit and spend fifteen minutes. And if
- 13:46it is busy and someone say, hey, man, I really want to
- 13:50talk to you about something like you you know, me and my dad had
- 13:54this thing and I want to tell you. And if there's a line of
- 13:56people, I'll say, hey, listen, can you come you here for
- 13:58the next couple days? Can you come around and if you see no one
- 14:01at my table, come over and we'll sit in chat for ten minutes.
- 14:05And usually people will do that unless they're leaving. They might go, oh,
- 14:07man, I'm leaving today after drive five hours. Then I'll say,
- 14:11well, can you come back in like a half hour, and let's see
- 14:13if people there's no one at my table, then we could chat a little
- 14:16longer. You know. Yeah, Well, Jason Muse is a man of
- 14:18the people. That's why he will talk to you. Now you have to
- 14:24do you know that. I've heard, sorry, I have heard stories though,
- 14:26of people who just in general don't want to chat. I've heard that
- 14:31some people like will literally not even look up at the person. They'll find
- 14:35their name, they won't personalize it, and they won't even look at the
- 14:39person. They'll go next. Yeah, and I don't think that's very nice.
- 14:41I don't think that's especially some of them. You know, it's not
- 14:46you're waiting a long time, and it's not cheap, you know. So
- 14:48yeah, I've heard I've heard Susan Sarandon lately at some of these conventions.
- 14:52Not very pleasant to be around. But you know, Jay, you're going
- 14:56to be at the Paramount on the twenty eighth. As we were talking fucking
- 15:00at the beginning of this for Jay and Silent Bob get old you and Kevin
- 15:03Smith, So what can fans expect from the show? You know? It's
- 15:07it's what's been fun about this is like it's sort of like a peek into
- 15:13like what's what if someone's like, hey, I haven't seen especially for us,
- 15:16we haven't done a movie, you know, and a little bit,
- 15:20and people are wondering what we're up to. It's like, use it.
- 15:22Kevin and I open up. We tell a few stories. You get to
- 15:26hear some stories about what's going on with me and Kevin, like, you
- 15:28know, this is what on our way here on the plane, this crazy
- 15:33thing happened. And you know, Kevin and I last week went here and
- 15:35guess what happened. And we tell some stories and we tell then we'll tell
- 15:39some stories from like maybe the last movie we made. We just did a
- 15:43cruise. We did the Jay and Sell and Bob Cruise. Askew, it
- 15:46was our first one. So we we you know, we'll probably tell a
- 15:48couple of fun stories about that, and then then usually we wind up,
- 15:54you know, we play a game at the end. We we we read
- 15:56something maybe something Kevin wrote that hasn't been out there yet. Like again,
- 16:03nothing set in stone, but it's just it's just for me. It's I
- 16:06feel like it's just a peek into what's been going on with Kevin and I
- 16:11and what's what's in the future, what we're gonna be doing, something maybe
- 16:14people are expecting or hoping or wondering about. And then a couple of games
- 16:18and some stuff. So again, it's it's been fun for us for the
- 16:25past. I mean, we've done it for eight years. We've taken sort
- 16:27of a break. We've done a couple here and there, but it'll be
- 16:32nice. We're gonna be on the East Coast and our hometown will be Jersey,
- 16:34New York. It's gonna be a lot of fun. I'm like excited
- 16:37about it. And plus, Kevin and I haven't done on the wall,
- 16:41so we have a a lot of stories to tell and a lot of fun
- 16:45stuff to talk about. Things that are happening, Like we have some movies
- 16:48coming up. I don't want to say I'm here because we're gonna talk about
- 16:51stuff on there and some things that are coming up in the future, things
- 16:55that have happened in the past. I got kids now, so I got
- 16:57some funny stories. I'm gonna talk about my kids, and so well we
- 17:00speaking of your your kids and your family. How important I know you've been
- 17:06open about some of the issues that you've had in the past, and I've
- 17:08heard you on Steve O's podcast, you know, talk about some of your
- 17:11you know, your substance issues that you've dealt with. You've been sober for
- 17:15quite some time. How important is having your wife Jordan, who is awesome
- 17:21from everything I see with her, and you know, being a dad.
- 17:23How important has that been into your sobriety? Definitely super I mean, it's
- 17:30it's been honestly having the kids, you know, the podcast was a huge
- 17:34help for me keeping straight, like, you know, because Kevin and I
- 17:38would tour like every weekend, and so I was so busy and we'd be
- 17:42talking about it. And what was great about the podcast is we used to
- 17:45do account like, hey, I have thirteen years you know, two years
- 17:48sober, three years sober. And I felt very accountable. Like I even
- 17:53used to have bad dreams when we'd we'd be on the road, I'd have
- 17:56a dream that I went out and drank, and I'd be like, oh
- 17:59my god, I have to get on stage tomorrow and tell you know,
- 18:02eight hundred people or whatever amount of people that I have one day sober now
- 18:07because I messed up. And that used to terrify me. So it was
- 18:10honestly such a help that we would be doing this because and also I'd be
- 18:15out somewhere and someone would say, hey, dude, I listen to the
- 18:17podcast. How many days sober? So people would call me out constantly.
- 18:21So the first eight years, man, it was such a help for me
- 18:23to stay on the on track and then not at the same time. Don't
- 18:26get me wrong, I was with my wife, and she was a big
- 18:30help. Of course she's always supportive, and of course I didn't want to
- 18:34disappoint her. And then when with the kids, that just added to it.
- 18:37It's like I'm so busy bringing the kids to the doctor or then to
- 18:41school, picking her up from school, bringing her to ballet, you know.
- 18:45And the little man right now, he's running around like a madman.
- 18:48He wakes up at you know, five point thirty six, so, you
- 18:52know, So it's like I'm just constantly not only wanting to disappoint and be
- 18:56able to be the present for my family. It's like I don't want to
- 19:00disappoint them, and I just and at the same time, I don't have
- 19:03time, like it's I don't not that I don't not not that I couldn't
- 19:07sneak around, but it's not like I have time to like go hang out
- 19:10at a bar and get myself in trouble, like I just don't do that.
- 19:12And and it's been it's been amazing, Honestly, the family has been
- 19:17like what I've wanted for forever. Kevin always talks about it, like,
- 19:19you know, when I was twenty five thirty, I say, like,
- 19:22man, I really want a family. I want to start a family.
- 19:25And even even when I was a mess, you know, i'd be a
- 19:26mess, and I'd still that would be my ideal like scenario of what I
- 19:32thought was, you know, a productive life is working and having a family,
- 19:37and and I have that now. So it's been it's been awesome.
- 19:40And like I said, I'm here to visit one of my good friends his
- 19:44daughter's want first birthday, and we're out in Santa Barbara and so we're making
- 19:48in a little vacation slash family vacation flash, going to see my friends his
- 19:53birthday, the kid's birthday. That is so it's great, man, it's
- 19:59been really great. You know. It's funny you mentioned the dreams that you've
- 20:03had where you've you know, you've disappointed. You wake up and you're like,
- 20:07did I drink? Because I've had I and I'm an advocate for marijuana,
- 20:11but I haven't smoked in since twenty eleven, and I would have these
- 20:15dreams. I'm like, oh my god, I can't believe I did that.
- 20:18You play it in your head like did I really do that? And
- 20:21then it's funny that I wonder if that's a common theme that a lot of
- 20:25people have dreams that they fall off the wagon, you definitely think so.
- 20:30I definitely remember having them, more so in the beginning, and that was
- 20:33more even just in general, I would, you know. Then with the
- 20:37podcast, of course there's be me about disappointing and stuff. But I do
- 20:41think it's common because I remember, even in the first couple of years,
- 20:45like it was tough, because I swear I would drive down the street and
- 20:48I would smell something and it would make me think of, oh, you
- 20:52know, this time I was in the park and I was using, and
- 20:56I you know, and even though it wasn't a good memory, it was
- 20:57still a memory that would like bring me back and make my stomach turn.
- 21:02And and then I would go past the burger King and I used to go
- 21:04to this one Burger King and go in the bathroom and use, and it
- 21:07was you know, again think looking back, it's bad. But at the
- 21:10same time, the first couple of years, whenever I passed that my stomach
- 21:14would turn, I'd get butterflies. And yeah, it's definitely was the first
- 21:18few years. I mean, it's tough in general, but it's tough the
- 21:21first couple of years. Dreams and memories and all that stuff. So yeah,
- 21:26well you mentioned, you know, being disappointed. Do you get disappointed
- 21:30when you get a bad review or is that just something you try and ignore
- 21:33because you know everyone's a critic these days, and you know, some of
- 21:38your movies unfortunately don't have the best Rotten Tomato scores, but the fans love
- 21:42them, and that's what's important. Is that something you just tune out?
- 21:48Did it? Did it hurt you? At first? Hundred No, I
- 21:51one hundred percent tune out. And I've always tuned out, you know,
- 21:55I honestly am ignorant. I have not honestly seen I just try to ignore
- 22:00it because I do think I would obsess and that's why I don't, especially
- 22:03even you would think my first movie I directed, I would like try to
- 22:07like research people's feedback and like all that, but I didn't want to,
- 22:11like I don't want to know, like all I've got to hear, which
- 22:15is great, and I'm sure it's all the people that come to see me
- 22:18at comms and my podcast and I do. I do stand up comedy too.
- 22:22I do Jay mus and is amusing stories and afterwards I'll meet with people
- 22:26and they're like, oh my gosh, I watched your movie you directed.
- 22:29It was awesome. So the good thing is I've only heard good things about
- 22:33the movie I directed. But I'm sure there's tons out there with bad feedback,
- 22:37but I ignore that. I know Kevin has trouble ignoring that stuff,
- 22:41but I would rather just play ignorant, honestly ignorant. To me, is
- 22:45is definitely blessed because in my head, every movie that I've done, even
- 22:51if i've I course can't pass seeing reviews of you know, Rotten Tomatoes,
- 22:56like you said, bad Rotten Tomato views, and or like when Molrats.
- 23:00I remember Zac and Mary make a point. We had Craig Robinson and and
- 23:03you know what, Zach, I can can't think of the names Seth Rogan
- 23:08my bad, yeah, you know. And I remember Kevin was like,
- 23:11dude, these guys the last movie they did, box office numbers were crazy.
- 23:15We're gonna this movie is going to be the one that we're going to
- 23:18get good box office numbers. Rotten Tomatoes is going to be awesome. And
- 23:22I remember like, so, of course I remember that didn't happen, and
- 23:26we were like, what the heck? But again, I didn't see anyone
- 23:30specifically point out like well that Ja Muws was awesome, I mean a horrible
- 23:34luster. You know, I just know the movie didn't do great. Of
- 23:37course I couldn't ignore that, but I've ignored trying to research me personally and
- 23:45what people think about my character and about my acting and about because I really
- 23:49do think I would obsess about it and it would get in my head so
- 23:53and then yet I don't pay attention to that. It's just I'm reminded of
- 23:57the scene and Jay and Silent Bob strike back when you go on the website
- 24:02and you see all the bad reviews and then you just show up at all
- 24:04their houses and beat the crap out of them. That I would want to
- 24:08do that, I really would, because like it's like I know that I've
- 24:12gotten things where people There was someone recently who took this really weird and I
- 24:18only saw it because someone sent it to me, but like someone took a
- 24:21picture of me and my kid and and like for some reason wrote really nasty
- 24:26stuff and like like it was me holding her and they put like a circle
- 24:30around my hand and was like look at this pig touching his kid or whatever,
- 24:36something like really crazy and really hurt mean, but in my head,
- 24:40I was like, man, I want like really like, who is this?
- 24:42I want to find this? Why would you write that? Like?
- 24:45So I know that and that was like one thing but and it was horrible.
- 24:48Don't get me wrong, But I'm just saying I know how I felt
- 24:52for that thing. If I looked at stuff constantly, I would really want
- 24:56to be like, let's fly around the country and find everyone. Well.
- 25:00Speaking of Jensull and Bob strike Back, is there a movie in the the
- 25:06Viewisk universe that you're most proud of? Is it one of the earlier works?
- 25:10Is it something more recently? Is there one that jumps to mind?
- 25:12You're like, this is where I'm at my peak right now, this is
- 25:15prime Jay. No, this is See that's another thing I don't do.
- 25:19For me watching myself, I always feel like, oh I could have done
- 25:22better there, I should have said this like that. I do feel like
- 25:26people tell me just from feedback, not from me personally, but people say
- 25:32that I did really well in Dogma. They feel like Dogma is the movie
- 25:36where they felt like I really shined, and like they say, I stole
- 25:41the movie, you know, in the sense of that. So I don't
- 25:44know, and I do feel like that one. I had memorized the whole
- 25:48script. I was so nervous because Kevin told me like, look, dude,
- 25:52all the movies we've done, we're working with Alan Rickman. He's a
- 25:55British actor. He doesn't play around. If you're doing a scene with and
- 26:00you mess up your dialogue, he's not going to be happy, dude,
- 26:03Like he'll be disappointed and it's really going to mess us up. So he
- 26:06Kevin got me so nervous. I used to read the script for hours every
- 26:11day, from front to back, front to back, and I'm not exagged
- 26:14rating. I memorized almost every single person's role, like I knew everyone's dialogue,
- 26:21like I could sit there. We would go to rehearsals and Kevin would
- 26:23be like, oh, man, Lee's gonna be late because he had to
- 26:26do something. He'll be here in an hour. We need someone to read
- 26:30for him. I'll I'll be like, I'll do it if you don't have
- 26:33a script, And I'm like, I don't need the script, and I
- 26:34honestly did, like so I don't know. I just feel like because of
- 26:37that and that, so I would say dogma. I would say dogma,
- 26:41not only because people told me that, but I do feel like I really
- 26:45I really was like focused on that, like I really memorize the script and
- 26:49like, yeah, so I want to quickly just talk about, you know,
- 26:53being sober. Was it difficult making that first movie while being sober?
- 27:00As I would imagine you would maybe I have thought of like, am I
- 27:02still funny without being high? Is that something that you experienced? Yeah,
- 27:07I mean I definitely, I definitely there was times where I would feel that
- 27:12way that But until we got started working, I feel like, you know,
- 27:17in the beginning, I thought that I wasn't going to be up to
- 27:18when we started filming. When we started filming, like I remember, Clerks
- 27:22Too was one of the first ones I can remember that I was sober,
- 27:26sober, like I had been sober for a couple of years. I was
- 27:30feeling healthy, and I remember being like, oh my god, I'm not
- 27:33going to be as I'm not going to be as quick witted, and it's
- 27:36not going to be as good. But it was the opposite. As soon
- 27:38as I started working, because I wasn't waking up feeling like hungover or sick
- 27:45because I didn't have anything to take or what have you. I felt like
- 27:49clear as a bell, and like realized that I was a lot more on
- 27:52top of stuff. Like I just felt better, you know. I wasn't
- 27:56like like movies before that, m even Dogma for example, Like by the
- 28:02end of Dogma, I started drinking again and using and stuff, and I
- 28:06remember that I'd be like, oh, man, like this scene we've been
- 28:08doing the same scene for like, you know, like because sometimes you know,
- 28:11you film the scene, you block out the scene and they're like,
- 28:15man, we got to set up these lights and do this stuff, and
- 28:18they're like, gonna be ten minutes. I'm gonna come on ten minutes.
- 28:19Why'd you call me this set? Man, I'm gonna go lay down in
- 28:22my trailer because I was hungover and tired and I wanted to go lay down
- 28:26where clerks too. I'm like ten minutes, fine, man, I'm gonna
- 28:29sit here and do push ups. I'm gonna sit here and like go over
- 28:32the scene with someone, you know. So yeah, I would definitely say
- 28:37I thought that at first, but then as soon as we started working,
- 28:41I felt the opposite. That's awesome to hear. Now, Jay, You've
- 28:45also done some voice work over the years. You know, the Clerk's animated
- 28:48show is so good, and I think it only had six episodes. I
- 28:52feel like if that show came out like six or seven years later, an
- 28:56adult Swim was really a thing. If it wasn't on ABC, I feel
- 29:00like that show could have lasted, you know, seven eight seasons. And
- 29:03then you were just in the Kev's Masters of the Universe show. You were
- 29:07stink or I think he did another role. Is that something you'd like to
- 29:10do more of? More cartoon voices? And do you have a favorite cartoon?
- 29:14Do you have a favorite cartoon growing up? And what was the experience,
- 29:17like, you know, doing the voice work? So for clerks,
- 29:22I agree with you. The clerks that made I say that to people all
- 29:25the time. I say, like the bummers. I feel like Kevin,
- 29:27what was before his time? Like the only thing I remember being out at
- 29:32that time was maybe the Simpsons, I think, yeah, King of the
- 29:33Hill. Yeah, it was like, yeah, there was no Rick,
- 29:37Rick and Morty, there was no you know, all the Bob's Burgers,
- 29:41all these other cartoons were not out. And it stinks because you're right,
- 29:47I feel like if it came out seven eight years later, it really would
- 29:49have popped, because I think it's amazing, and most of people that have
- 29:53seen it, I just think no one got to see it. The network
- 29:56canceled it. But anyway, that being said, I love doing that and
- 30:02I loved. Yes, I've done like you said, I've done The Masters
- 30:04of the Universe. I've I've got to do a couple animated movies. You
- 30:10know. I've done some game characters. I was Mort and Fallouts, which
- 30:15was amazing, this character Mort. But yes, I would love to do
- 30:18that. It's so much. It's such a different thing because you have to
- 30:22like I like to be animated with my hands and move around, but you
- 30:26can't really because you're in a booth and the microphone picks up everything. But
- 30:32I mean you wake up, you go and you could be in your pajamas
- 30:33and you could sit there for you know, playing around and stuff. We
- 30:37have a game coming out actually I just did it. My last recording was
- 30:41we I did voices, well, sound effects and stuff. We're coming out
- 30:47with a game soon. It's called Jay and Sombob Chronic Blunt Punch, and
- 30:52it's a mobile game. Looks yeah, I don't know. I think they're
- 30:56gonna have it on mobile, but right now I know it's going to be
- 31:00on a couple of the contents. Hell yeah, if you look it up.
- 31:03Yeah, if you go on my instagram. Uh, if you go
- 31:06on my Instagram, I think it's pinned on or my TikTok as well,
- 31:11it's in there. The trailer for it, honestly, watch it when we
- 31:15get off the phone. Yeah, I think you'll really dig it. It's
- 31:18like it's sort of the same style as like the teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or
- 31:22the X ME Old Beat them Up. Yeah, like, yeah, so
- 31:26you could be Jay or Bob and you can go. You know. It's
- 31:30but there's really cool effects in it. You'll see it when you watch the
- 31:33trailer. Bunny in it, I could see you guys, uh fighting the
- 31:37Easter Bunny thing. Yeah, Monster Easter Bunny. It's it's awesome. But
- 31:42the animation for like the graphics I mean for it is really awesome blunt and
- 31:48then again like your special power is it's Jay and Bob, but then you
- 31:53get this special while you're playing it. You get this thing you could turn
- 31:57into blunt Man and Chronic which are like almost like mega Man suits. Like
- 32:02it's pretty Just watch the trailer and you'll understand. But yes, it's so
- 32:07much fun, I think doing and the voiceovers. But it's tough. I
- 32:10realized. I go on, I go on auditions all the time, and
- 32:15I'll be sitting in the lobby and like the role might be playing. You
- 32:17might be in there for a role for like a twelve year old kid,
- 32:21and you know, I'll do my best twelve year old kid, which isn't
- 32:23great. And then you'll hear someone You'll see this eight, you know,
- 32:28sixty year old gruffy old man, and all of a sudden, I'll hear
- 32:31him go in the booth and he'll be able to hear him and he'll like,
- 32:34hey, man, it's basically and he'll be like spot on perfect.
- 32:37And I'm like, like, there's people out there that that is their job
- 32:40just so good at it, you know, And so I always feel like
- 32:44it's it's tough because it's like, yes, you know, I get lucky
- 32:47sometimes someone wants the Jay voice or my voice, you know whatever. But
- 32:52like when it comes to like them just casting roles and voiceover actors, man,
- 32:59they are like spot on, you know. So it's tough to compete,
- 33:02to be honest, you know's what's funny. Jay I watched the movie
- 33:07Freddie Versus Jason a few weeks ago. I don't know if you've seen this,
- 33:12there's the character that's clearly a j ripoff. Is that you have you
- 33:16seen that? Is that something that you laugh at? You you laugh at
- 33:20that? Or what's your reaction when you see something like that? Well,
- 33:23well I laugh at I laugh. But at the same time, I'm just
- 33:27like, well, why didn't they just call me? Like, you know,
- 33:29I mean, I would have totally been in a Freddy Versus Jason movie,
- 33:32honestly, I would have Like that would be so cool for me.
- 33:36I grew up watching the Freddy's and the Jason's, you know what I mean.
- 33:38Like, so if I got to be in like a movie and got
- 33:43the like that stuff like appeals to me. Like even if they were like,
- 33:45hey, we don't we don't have the money to pay for you or
- 33:49whatever, I'm like, I'll do it for scale, Like, let's just
- 33:51do it. I get to be like, honestly, I get to be
- 33:53in a Friday at thirteen Freddy movie, that'd be amazing. So but yes,
- 33:58it is funny, but it's more funny because I just like, why
- 34:01didn't they honestly call me and if and maybe they didn't do it on purpose.
- 34:07I don't know. At least you guys were in Scream three, so
- 34:10you got you got some horrors one hundred. What's what's next for Jason Muse?
- 34:16You know, I think you said you you might be teasing some stuff
- 34:20in the coming future. Is there anything you can announce or is this something
- 34:22uh uh, maybe we can get an exclusive. Well again, there's things
- 34:28Kevin wants to announce, so nothing set in stones. There's a couple scripts
- 34:31and movies that Kevin would really like to do that we're gonna announce he wants
- 34:36to talk about on the show. For me, though, for the most
- 34:38part, man my main thing. Usually I try to squeeze in. It's
- 34:43harder now with the kids. But I used to stream like three hours a
- 34:46day on Twitch. I would play games, I would open up boxes people
- 34:50would send me get like Blizzard and and play. People would send stuff and
- 34:53I'd open them up on stream. And I love doing that. Like,
- 34:58honestly, if I could like direct a movie and do a j and Bob
- 35:01movie with Kevin, like one of those each year and stream the rest of
- 35:07the time. But also I have my amusing stories I've been doing that more
- 35:10than anything is my stand up. Like in June, I'm going to be
- 35:14in be doing a bunch of stand up you know, we're doing the podcast
- 35:19with you know, like we're coming there to do the podcast, but that
- 35:22week you know that we're doing like we're going to Chicago, then we're Jersey,
- 35:27New York, and then we're going to London, and then I come
- 35:29back and I do a bunch of my amusing stories stand up comedy shows and
- 35:32so yeah, so right now for me in the future is a lot of
- 35:36stand up comedy shows. I'm trying to get better at that, trying to
- 35:39like, you know, be able to do more with that because I do
- 35:43enjoy it. But I've been doing clubs like I do, like clubs from
- 35:45one hundred and seventy five to like three hundred capacity. My goal is to
- 35:50hopefully, you know, start get a special or do something eventually and then
- 35:55you know, Kevin and I hopefully are going to do another movie that's in
- 35:59our universe. And again I don't know. He has a couple on his
- 36:02thing, but I don't know what he is. There's nothing setting stone for
- 36:06a plan unless he knows. And I don't know. So, yeah,
- 36:09there will be another Jambob by the end of the year, and not Jambob
- 36:15in general, but just a movie with Jambob somehow in it. Yeah,
- 36:19I've been reading for years, you know, whether it's Maul Rats two another
- 36:22you know, Jane and Silent Bob. I even heard possibly a Clerks for
- 36:25but everyone that's the fans of you guys. I'm sure will be there first
- 36:30in line. I know I will be, and I will be an April
- 36:34twenty eighth at the Paramountain, Huntington. I'll be there to see Jay and
- 36:37Silent Bob get old, which I'm sure it will be awesome. Jay,
- 36:42this has been such a pleasure, dude, I mean, this is a
- 36:45dream come true again to talk to you. I thank you so much for
- 36:46giving me just you know, forty minutes or whatever you gave me. No,
- 36:51I appreciate it and thank you very much. And I will see you
- 36:53at the show. Tell ya.
