- 3:12Make sure while you're here, hit that like button and subscribe,
- 3:15wherever you're listening in at. And we got some special guests this week.
- 3:19One, Mr. Famous ZB Kitchens on Iowa Waterfowlers, and Mr. Cody Mann,
- 3:25which, gonna give it a minute to let them in, I guess, because Cody's camera's
- 3:28off all of a sudden. There he is. Bring it on, boys.
- 3:32How's it going, guys? Not bad. Not just that. That's it. Not bad.
- 3:37No, that's it. That's all you get. That's it. Yep.
- 3:41At least he said something. ZB just said wave. Yeah, Zach just said, man.
- 3:46Is he frozen? Are you okay, ZB?
- 3:51I can only hear you, Zach. You can only hear me? Yeah.
- 3:55Well, that's fine. I'll just relay questions. Let me try removing them and bringing
- 4:00them back. You want me to try to sign back in?
- 4:02Yeah, go ahead and do that. Come out and come back in. I'll let you in.
- 4:07Maybe I can try to go live on my phone.
- 4:10Just try signing out. We'll get through some beginning stuff here.
- 4:13You sign out, we'll let you right back in.
- 4:17Well, before we're waiting on him to come back, we'll just move into kind of
- 4:21pookie. Where the fuck have you been?
- 4:23Dude, working, getting ready for the kiddo to come.
- 4:27Wife's kept a strict schedule on me lately, but finally not working nights, so pumped to be back.
- 4:36I have watched all your guys' episodes. They're not as good without me on it,
- 4:40but, I mean, it is what it is. I'm back for the people.
- 4:45Yeah it's just not as fun without you it's harder to pick on Zach compared to
- 4:51you I know I get it I'll take that as a W.
- 4:59But can you hear everybody now Zach can you still just hear me I can hear you,
- 5:07that's so weird I can hear Cody,
- 5:10sorry about that guys alright at least we got two of the four Yeah,
- 5:15it'll work. It'll buff.
- 5:18I can hear everybody now. Oh, there we go. All right. Well, let's move into
- 5:23some of the news while we're here.
- 5:24One thing I've seen is that Missouri added a non-resident bird permit this year
- 5:28that is now $60 for non-residents to come and hunt in Missouri compared to,
- 5:35I think it was just like $6 or $7 last year.
- 5:40I mean, ZB or Cody would be able to tell me more than I know,
- 5:44but wasn't it like $7.50 as a non-resident or used to be?
- 5:48Yeah, it was like a total of $12.50 to hunt just for the day,
- 5:51too. You get day permit down there.
- 5:53So I guess it was probably a little closer to $20 now, but when I first started
- 5:57to go down there, it was $12.50.
- 5:59It's one of those things you don't really pay attention to. You just got to
- 6:01buy it anyway. It's kind of like, yeah.
- 6:04I mean, how often do we sit there and go, yeah, I'm not going to go because
- 6:08that costs too much for the license. Exactly.
- 6:11Still going to spend the money and go either way. Yep.
- 6:15If we were into saving money, none of us would be doing any of this. No.
- 6:21No. I make sure I stay broke doing this, really. Yeah, absolutely.
- 6:25Well, with this hobby, I can't afford drugs, so it keeps me going straight now.
- 6:31Oh, shit. And then Kansas. There's a lot of speculation coming out of Kansas
- 6:38lately, the past couple years, really,
- 6:40that they're going to really limit non-residents and maybe even how many non-residents
- 6:44can come into the state and hunt every year, which is wild.
- 6:48Kind of South Dakota does the same thing, though. Yeah.
- 6:52Did you see any numbers?
- 6:55Do what? Did you see any sort of numbers on that? No, I did not.
- 7:00I know it got denied. One of the deals got shut down a year or two ago,
- 7:05but I know They've been working on it and trying to get something figured out.
- 7:09I mean, you're already limited.
- 7:10I think you can't hunt weekends or something like that on state ground and federal ground.
- 7:16It was at,
- 7:1824. They introduced that bill to limit the amount of non-residents coming into
- 7:24Canada. And there was a handful of people, you know, you're always going to
- 7:27have the guys to bitch about it, right? Did you say Canada?
- 7:30Did I say Canada? I'm pretty sure you said Canada. Basically the same thing
- 7:34in Canada. I mean, almost.
- 7:38Directions, B.I. And then, what's your guys' opinion on this daylight savings time deal?
- 7:45I don't know. It just gives us an extra hour of sleep during duck season,
- 7:48but it's going to be kind of weird not having a shooting time until 8 o'clock or later.
- 7:56Don't let somebody go at once. I mean, selfishly, I kind of like it, right? I mean,
- 8:02it's going to open up opportunities for some guys. It's going to lessen the
- 8:05opportunities for others, right? Depending if you're a night worker,
- 8:07your weekend shift, whatever it is, for your average weekend warrior, bye.
- 8:16Didn't want to talk to you anyways for your average weekend warrior i don't see it i,
- 8:21mean i don't think it's gonna affect much right i mean you're taking an hour
- 8:24at the beginning tacking on the hour at the end so i mean you're still getting
- 8:27the same amount of daylight in a in a day's worth of hunting i can still i can
- 8:32just drink beer till 11 instead of 10 now hey trenton's got a good point,
- 8:37he gets to sleep an hour later in the boat on midnight runs now So it's just
- 8:40an extra hour of nice sleep on the gun box.
- 8:43Yeah, good, high quality sleep, I can only imagine.
- 8:47Dude i'm not gonna lie that might seriously be a game changer for me though
- 8:51when i'm working nights and i'm off at midnight and i do get that extra hour
- 8:54of sleep like that'll be huge.
- 8:58Yeah i was thinking about that the other day whenever we were me and you were
- 9:01texting back and forth on it i'm like yeah that'll really benefit austin a little
- 9:05bit we can go out an hour later,
- 9:06yeah need that especially with how much i had been doing that like just two
- 9:13weeks straight of doing that every single day, just hunting pretty much straight
- 9:17up until work and doing it every single day I could.
- 9:21Yeah, that's one good thing about night shift. You can work all night and then
- 9:25hunt all day and just get minimal sleep.
- 9:28I used to do that when I worked 10 to 6 and then I'd go hunting at 6.
- 9:31Of course, I was always the last one at the marsh and everybody touched me going
- 9:34in, but it was worth it. Just pissing everybody off.
- 9:38It was worth it every single time. You gotta do what you gotta do.
- 9:42I mean, I get why people get mad when guys are coming in late.
- 9:47But at the same time, it's like, as long as you're going basically to your spot,
- 9:51and not going on a complete joyride, it's not big of a deal.
- 9:56I mean, we don't have time to stop and talk about the situation you're in,
- 9:59right? But it is definitely situational.
- 10:02As far as Cody's situation, I wouldn't be as annoyed as I would with certain
- 10:05other people just sleeping in and showing up late.
- 10:09Pookie, I believe he's referring to you on this. dude that's crazy he's the
- 10:12cop that's always late to the boat
- 10:14ramp I was late one time last year yeah overslept one time that's crazy.
- 10:22Oh, well, let's move in to a little bit of your guys' background.
- 10:27We'll go ahead and start with Zach since he's here temporarily.
- 10:29We'll see how long he stays here this time because he keeps getting mad and leaving.
- 10:33Yeah, my connection's not the best right now.
- 10:37My dad got me into hunting and fishing, trapping, very young.
- 10:42I think I did a little bit of waterfowl hunting when I was about 10,
- 10:4611, then got back into it about 16.
- 10:51And it's ever been been there ever since what uh do you guys hunt you do you
- 10:58kind of hunt the same style as you guys used to or just was it just you and
- 11:02your dad or when you started,
- 11:04we always hunted out of a boat for ducks a little bit here and there and then,
- 11:08i mean once we get talking about snow goose hunting i mean we did a lot of jump
- 11:12shooting when we're when i was younger and i know So that's,
- 11:17a sore subject, but then we figured out that we could decoy them and I'd buy
- 11:23pretty much anything and everything I could or afford.
- 11:26And it's grown from there.
- 11:30Yeah, it's like a drug. Like Zach said earlier, it's addicting.
- 11:35Can't get off it once you start it. I feel like, Cody, give us a little bit
- 11:38of how you got started and let me know or kind of tell us your background.
- 11:43My dad started taking me duck hunting in a duck boat when I was two.
- 11:46Mom was kind of frowned upon that because she said I was just creating a monster, and that we did.
- 11:53So that led to goose hunting when I was old enough to drive because he kind of got away from it.
- 12:01So i drove to missouri and picked up my first 10 dozen of snow goose decoys
- 12:05and a chevy cavalier so i stuffed them all in there and kind of just took off from there,
- 12:11i like decoying them really really close and you and your dad still hunt together
- 12:16now don't don't you guys yeah every once in a while he'll go he doesn't like
- 12:20duck and goose hunting a whole lot anymore just because you have to get up early and he's old,
- 12:25but it could be a lot of work too yeah he enjoys deer hunting now more than
- 12:29Duck and Goose, so whatever. Everybody's got their own thing.
- 12:34It's a young man's game, that's for sure. Especially Snow Goose season.
- 12:36Whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Tyler's in the chat. Shut up.
- 12:43Yeah, so how long have you been saying you've been doing it? When did you start?
- 12:47I started being old by myself when I was 16. I just went and went with my dad
- 12:52when I was younger. I probably shot my first duck at like 8.
- 12:56So what was your first duck you ever killed? Mallard, the hen mallard.
- 13:01Hen mallard. Zach, what was yours? Blue winged tail.
- 13:05Atta boy. The absolute pinnacle of ducks in Iowa.
- 13:10Dude, that season's coming up quick, too. Yeah, it is.
- 13:15A sweaty mess and covered mosquitoes.
- 13:20How many bands do you have, Cody? Have you killed?
- 13:25I think six Canada's, two Snow Goose, and then I got Blue Phase Rossi right there.
- 13:31That's about it. Oh, I got a Mallard band last year out from Zach.
- 13:35Oh, yes. You did. I remember playing Mallard in South Dakota.
- 13:41Sheesh. Yeah. Zach, what do you have now? I think I, well, I got a roadkill Canada band.
- 13:49I found on the side of the interstate. And I got a, I just have a honker and
- 13:54it ended up being a local band here and from where I'm from here in town.
- 13:58And then a banded Gadwall from South. I shot in South Dakota,
- 14:03but it was banded in Louisiana.
- 14:06Oh, that's pretty cool. Yeah, that's dope.
- 14:09All right, Zach, what's your favorite bird or coolest bird that you've killed? Hmm.
- 14:15It'd be a tough one. Probably the banded gadwall, honestly. That was pretty
- 14:19cool. Only because I missed it three times.
- 14:23He killed it. Man, that'll sting. Someone's got to get it. Yeah.
- 14:28That probably hurt worse than whenever I killed the speckle belly last year
- 14:33out of the boat when Austin never killed one before I told him to shoot it.
- 14:37Did he miss it? no my gun was unloaded I didn't even pull up my gun there's
- 14:42a shell sticking out of it I'm like somebody kill it at least like do not let
- 14:46this that thing was so beautiful barred up just so nice too and I'm like,
- 14:52well if this gun wasn't brand new it might go in the drink.
- 14:59What's your favorite bird you've killed or coolest bird you've killed Cody?
- 15:02I killed a 20 year old Canada goose in northwest Iowa and then probably that
- 15:06blue phaser I'll see 9 and 20, that's an old bird. That's a pretty old bird.
- 15:13And then one more question. If you could pick anywhere to go for a dream hunt, where would you go?
- 15:21Maybe Canada because I haven't been there yet. I was going to pretty much everywhere else.
- 15:28I want to go to Idaho. That's on my bucket list. Oh, yeah, that would be cool.
- 15:32On the Snake River. Yeah. Yeah.
- 15:36Find you a Mormon girl.
- 15:41I'd like to go to either Alaska or Argentina Alaska would be amazing dude I
- 15:47don't know Argentina would be sick though they don't have limits down there
- 15:50I don't think no yeah but you can't bring anything back.
- 15:55That would be the downside, but it'd still be fun to go down there.
- 15:59That would be, I've actually just seen something on, I think,
- 16:02Instagram the other day about an outfitter down there, and I was like,
- 16:05oh, I'd want to go so bad one of these days.
- 16:08I had a dove hunt bought and then didn't go.
- 16:11A what? A dove hunt? Yeah, in Argentina. Oh, shit.
- 16:15Yeah, I bought, me and two buddies
- 16:17split it, and we bought it at the ISC banquet like three years ago.
- 16:22Mm-hmm. Yeah, and then we started looking at the prices, and we were all like,
- 16:26well, I know we have the hump, but you got to buy the shells and rent the guns
- 16:30and pay the bird boys. And I was like, ah, what do you guys expect to,
- 16:34like how many shells do you expect to shoot in a day?
- 16:36And they're like, oh, you probably need a case a day. I said, oh, I better not.
- 16:43Melting the gun down. Yeah, I was like, I'm not in the position to do that right
- 16:46now, so I'm going to pass.
- 16:48Well, since I asked these two, I'll ask you, Zach, new and dork.
- 16:52What's your dream hunt? What's your dream place to go to? So I'm going to get
- 16:56across one off the list, hopefully.
- 16:58I'm with ZB. I really want to go to Alaska. I think it'd be awesome.
- 17:01I'd love to go shoot like a harlequin over in Alaska.
- 17:04But I am going on a New Zealand stag hunt in 2028.
- 17:09And I'm going to think, I think I'm going to be able to knock down a couple
- 17:12of paradise ducks while I'm out there and do one morning of a duck hunt out there.
- 17:15That'd be fun. So we're supposed to be going about their fall season.
- 17:19So as long as I talk to the guide and get that in the books,
- 17:22I'll be able to do one morning of duck hunting out there.
- 17:25They got the Paradise Ducks, which are really pretty birds. And then you can
- 17:28shoot, I need to do a little research on it. I just found out about it today, actually.
- 17:32You shoot a black swan out there.
- 17:34A black swan? Mm-hmm.
- 17:37It looks like, yeah, I mean, it looks like a trumpeter, but it's black and the
- 17:40wingtips are white. And it's got a pink, reddish bill.
- 17:45Kind of cool. So yeah, I think it'd be cool to go out there.
- 17:48It's really pretty out there so I'd like to get that one knocked out but yeah
- 17:51other than that I'm with ZB I'm gonna go to Alaska but you Pookie,
- 17:56I don't necessarily know if I have like a favorite place that I'd like to go.
- 18:00I think I, like, I would just sometime in my life like to kill a mallard-pentail hybrid.
- 18:07Like, I think that that, like, I might just be done hunting if that ever happened.
- 18:11And be like, well, probably never going to get cooler than this.
- 18:15Well, if that's the case, we're going to try really hard to get you on this
- 18:18fall. That is the new goal.
- 18:21Get him that duck. If it is, you guys are going to have to find somebody else
- 18:25that knows what they're, what they're doing, putting the boat together out there.
- 18:28So don't rely on Jack Neuendorf for that.
- 18:32We'll see if Dolphin wants to start going.
- 18:37Damn it. So, I mean, if you're good with introductions, you want to touch on
- 18:40the expo real quick? Oh, yeah.
- 18:44Yeah, we might as well. Go ahead. Hit it. Just figure we run through a couple things.
- 18:47I know we touched on it a month or a month and a half ago, whatever it was,
- 18:51but kind of touch on just some times and stuff when the door's open and kind of what's going on.
- 18:57So Friday, for anybody that's wanting to go Friday, the show floor opens at
- 19:02noon and will run until 6 with the banquet being at 5.30.
- 19:07If you're going to be at the banquet or even at the show, stop,
- 19:09say hi, but hopefully we'll see a few of you guys at the banquet.
- 19:11I'm really looking forward to that. I think it's going to be a really cool time.
- 19:15Really expensive time for a
- 19:17lot of people. I was going to say that was not anything. Yeah, not for me.
- 19:21And then Friday, also 1 to 5, they have some seminars. Obviously,
- 19:24they've got seminars Saturday as well. But the only thing I really wanted to
- 19:28touch on, doors open at 9 a.m. Saturday.
- 19:31But the one thing I want to point out is at noon, and I only say this because
- 19:34I've never been to one, so I'm going to check it out. They've got the Double
- 19:36Read Calling Championship Saturday at noon.
- 19:39Is it just a double read calling contest? I believe, from what I can tell on
- 19:43the Expo's website, it's just a double read.
- 19:46I haven't looked. I haven't found anything on that, really. So I'm just curious.
- 19:51I mean, it doesn't give any sort of classes or anything. It just says double-read
- 19:55calling championship, so I assumed it was only double-read,
- 19:59You signed up, ZB? I have.
- 20:05That's a sore subject right there.
- 20:10I'm just saying, you can register all the way up until 10 a.m.,
- 20:13I think, Saturday morning, so if you're feeling froggy.
- 20:16I'll just sign them up for it. Yeah. Done. Yeah.
- 20:21Thanks, guys. No problem. We'll even have the call there ready for you.
- 20:26Hopefully it's tuned pretty good. Oh, absolutely. Off the Pookie will tune it.
- 20:30Yeah. He still couldn't blow it.
- 20:33We can get the old double nasty out for him.
- 20:37Yeah. So, for you two boys, you guys are planning on coming Sunday, right? Yep.
- 20:44I might make it up Saturday at some point, but we'll see. Well,
- 20:48you'll be there Saturday at noon, but yeah. Well, yeah, you have to be there at noon.
- 20:52I want to be there a little before. We could probably be a little bit before
- 20:57just so you can get a couple rounds of practice. to sin yeah i'll work on that,
- 21:02the rest he's really good with the drake whistle sad i am.
- 21:11And then for all that's that care to go there is a church service at 9am on
- 21:15sunday and show floors open from nine to four yeah and if you if you're there
- 21:20and you find us we'll have stickers and whatnot on hand out. Chris Pie Fives.
- 21:28See if you can't sign some boobs over there. Ricky Bobby did it so I figured we could do it.
- 21:33Yeah I bought a whole case of Sharpies we're good to go. Sick.
- 21:39You got that everything for the Delta Expo you got or what?
- 21:42Yeah. I mean, that's, I mean, I feel like I've touched on the,
- 21:45I couldn't find anything on, on details on seminars and stuff.
- 21:48So I tried to look and see who's going to be talking, but I mean,
- 21:51there's a couple, there's a cooking one Saturday.
- 21:54Cooking with Kaya? Unfortunately, no.
- 21:59But you should attend the cooking one, Tyler. Like, I mean, you kind of lack
- 22:04towards the end of the year with the boat breakfast. So, or at least take some lessons from ZB.
- 22:11I'll tell you what tyler i'll take your breakfast over a lot of breakfasts yeah
- 22:16of course you would thanks zach i'm not sure how to take that little.
- 22:24We get it i'm back yeah so the if i go to like special events or live stages,
- 22:30so dirty's outerwear never heard of them to be honest limit sundown and then,
- 22:38a Komodo Joe field to table stage.
- 22:41There we go. Did you say Dirty's Outerwear or Dirty's Underwear?
- 22:44Dirty's Outerwear. You heard it.
- 22:48I did find the link. I'll just run through it here. Friday, you got Evolution Waterfowl Shotguns.
- 22:53At one, at two, you have Private Lands Management so we can start stopping the
- 22:57migration a little better. At three, you have Basic Dog Handling.
- 23:01At four, you got Feeling the Sporting Dog so Hydration Recovery and Readiness.
- 23:06And that puts us through Friday. Saturday, you're doing the private lands first thing in the morning.
- 23:12Pookie. 11 a.m. Calling 101. Foundations of a dead-effective duck calling.
- 23:19Noon's the dog handling again. Right after that's we're feeling the sport dog.
- 23:242 p.m. is from field to kennel so handling and breeder insights.
- 23:28Waterfowl shotguns again at 3.
- 23:31At 4 p.m. there's a all things waterfowl live Q&A. That'd be kind of cool.
- 23:37Sunday at 11 there's a call tuning so maximize performance in the field.
- 23:42What day again that's Sunday at 11 a.m.
- 23:45Oh shit I was really hoping we could get to that for Zach's calling competition
- 23:49you know before the competition no no that's where I think which yeah so yeah an hour before 11 a.m.
- 23:57On Saturday there's the call 101 foundations of effective duck calling so maybe
- 24:00we can hit that quick yeah.
- 24:04Yeah then private lands again basic dog handling and then at 2 p.m.
- 24:09On Sunday they have the all things waterfowl a live Q&A again Thank you.
- 24:13Should be a good time. I'm really looking forward to it. I've been looking forward
- 24:17to this weekend all since hunting season, really.
- 24:19Yeah, this is super. This is what I wanted to go to the past couple of years, seeing Bradley go.
- 24:24It looks awesome, so I'm excited. It's close to home.
- 24:28Yep. Going to be a lot of new stuff that's going to be there that you can check
- 24:31out, get your hands on it, and see if you actually want to buy it before you
- 24:34order it off of Rogers like everybody else buys everything from nowadays.
- 24:40But it'll be neat. It's easy, you know? Yeah. It is easy. It's easy to spend
- 24:45a bunch of money on there. Yes.
- 24:48But let's move into some of your guys' adventures and challenges that come with
- 24:55snow goose hunting and the things you guys have experienced out in the field.
- 24:59I guess we'll just kind of start, I mean, not locations here,
- 25:03but what's your guys' go-to state?
- 25:05I know you guys do a little bit of traveling. Favorite state to hunt snow geese in?
- 25:11Probably Arkansas in their mud. That's probably my favorite.
- 25:15Is there a specific reason?
- 25:17Down there, just chasing feeds. And up here, it's just like you're hunting the
- 25:21migrators, and that's about it.
- 25:23Chasing feeds is always fun. Yeah, it is.
- 25:27Zach? CB? I would agree. Arkansas is a great time every time. It's always a blast.
- 25:35I never look forward to the mud. I can tell you that, like Cody does.
- 25:39Cody can walk across the mud. I usually sink.
- 25:43I've had to pull you out of some mud before. Yeah. I usually get into it pretty
- 25:48good. We'll put it that way.
- 25:51You need to get some bigger feet. Yeah, I can't just walk across it. I sink.
- 25:57Last year, we had a pretty good time down there. Just the two of us.
- 25:59We threw out, what, a thousand socks or whatever is all we took down there.
- 26:04The two of us set up a little over two and a half hours.
- 26:07Chasing thieves down there for dinner. No, it was pretty fun.
- 26:11That it's gotten it's been years since i've gone down there but from what i've
- 26:15heard it's gotten really tough to get permission to hunt down there,
- 26:19just because of all the outfitters chasing them and people everybody does it
- 26:22nowadays compared to 10 years ago yeah we've got a pretty good relationship
- 26:26with a couple farmers down there
- 26:28so that helps yeah that makes a big difference yeah it's pretty solid,
- 26:33they kind of you guys you guys call them before you go and kind of get a rundown
- 26:37on the third virgin area you just kind of go every year at the same time We,
- 26:41go with the same year every time, but we also shoot him a text when we're leaving up here.
- 26:46This last year, we weren't sure if they were going to let us or not,
- 26:49and we tracked down the farm hand, and he made a call, and we were good to go.
- 26:54So that was really nice to hear after driving all night.
- 26:59Yeah, I can only imagine driving all night to get there, and the farmer's like,
- 27:03yeah, you ain't my shit no more. Get the fuck out.
- 27:06Would be a little stressful. Yep, and sent him a nice text when we left and
- 27:10everything else. And he said, hope to see you guys next year.
- 27:15Some of them landowners can really make the trip. Like our trip to North Dakota
- 27:19this past year that we did, that last landowner that we met and hunted his property
- 27:23was, a dude was a talker from all get out.
- 27:27But he was a good time and really accommodating. I can't believe he didn't come
- 27:31out and shoot geese with us because he kept acting like he wanted to.
- 27:36Yeah he could have shot his buck that day too yeah right right through the spread,
- 27:42wild all right well you mentioned spreads you guys ran a thousand socks or whatever
- 27:47what's your guys's go-to spread and kind of how much of each do you run and
- 27:51i mean we'll go into brands and favorite brands all that stuff too,
- 27:56well we've switched it up throughout the years i think,
- 28:00what cody we were running 3 000 socks a couple years ago and a couple hundred
- 28:05full bodies and then probably three four hundred floaters in a migratory spread
- 28:09and sold off a lot of that stuff and bought some newer stuff.
- 28:13So we're not as big as we used to be.
- 28:15Yeah, well, we go for more realism now. We have more full bodies and socks now.
- 28:23Is it getting like where you're having to go to full bodies to really get them
- 28:26finished? Like are the birds getting smarter or just more educated along the flyway?
- 28:30It depends on where you're at in the United States. Like Arkansas,
- 28:34they're pretty dumb down there.
- 28:35And then when they get up to here, they're pretty smart.
- 28:39Especially if you don't have any wind, and then the full bodies kind of come into play.
- 28:43Yeah. Speaking of hardships, the wind. Arkansas, that was tough this last year.
- 28:49We had zero wind for three days.
- 28:52Man, no wind. The one day we had seven-mile-an-hour wind, and we thought it
- 28:56was going to be a good day, and then it decided to get cloudy,
- 28:58and I think it was raining that day.
- 29:00Yeah, that was the day we picked up and went home. Yep.
- 29:06I feel like no wind, if you don't have wind, you're almost better off just staying
- 29:09home when it comes to duck, goose, snow goose. I mean, all of them.
- 29:12It's just, we all go still, because what else are you going to do?
- 29:15Sit at home and on the couch or whatnot? But it's tough. Well, no.
- 29:19If you stay at home, I guarantee you win to pick up.
- 29:23Walk outside and the wind just rips your head off if you stay at home. Yeah, that's the fact.
- 29:30That's how it works for me. Yeah. The most successful state is usually Missouri,
- 29:35though, because we've had our big numbers there because of migrators.
- 29:40Yeah, imagine if you hit that right. It's hard to beat, you know,
- 29:43getting right underneath their line when they're moving north and you're just
- 29:47pulling them out of the sky.
- 29:48I've gotten lucky a couple times back in Illinois when I used to hunt there,
- 29:52and you just hit it right and they just keep coming. You can pretty much shoot
- 29:56and reload and shoot and reload and never stop.
- 29:59I think the most we've ever shot is 165 over decoys, which is a pretty good day.
- 30:05That's a pretty damn good day, for sure. A lot of shells are shot.
- 30:09We usually hit it right about one day a year, it seems like. That year we hit it good.
- 30:17For a couple weekends straight, we did. Yeah, that was, what was that,
- 30:21two, three years ago where you guys were just beating them up,
- 30:23like, I think every weekend?
- 30:25I think it was, it wasn't this last season. It was, I think, the season before.
- 30:31They kind of all go together anymore.
- 30:34That's what happens when you get old, ZB. Yeah. Oh, I'm getting there.
- 30:39I'm getting there. Hopefully you catch me and pass me up in age.
- 30:43Yeah, I don't know if that's going to happen, Tyler. It might.
- 30:46Just keep, I can have a dream, okay?
- 30:50Yeah that is true we'd still give you more shit for it anyway Tyler.
- 30:57Whatever sorry I pick on you enough it's fine yeah I think you kind of mentioned
- 31:02it like it is so Missouri pretty much your favorite state to hunt or was it Arkansas,
- 31:07Arkansas definitely they're pretty experience wise but killing lies in Missouri,
- 31:13and then like everybody's got their own styles for snow goose hunting like,
- 31:18I mean it's yeah all kinds of different ways of doing it but between land and
- 31:21water which ones you guys was favorite I mean I see you guys do both quite a bit,
- 31:25we lay in whites quite a bit which is a lot easier to blend in than a layout
- 31:30line because you're usually hunting
- 31:31like an arkansas mud flat so you can't hardly mud your blind enough,
- 31:36so he's just laying whites on backboards about the most comfortable spot you
- 31:40definitely need sunscreen in arkansas i got sun poisoning one year in my eyes one shot,
- 31:45oh man you got sun poisoning yeah it was pretty bad oh we drove through the,
- 31:51down there in st louis and I got out to take a leak and the bathroom was around
- 31:54back if that tells you anything and there's a couple guys that didn't even want
- 31:57to mess with me because I look terrible.
- 32:01That doesn't even sound fun. No, it was miserable.
- 32:06So I guess also like land or water, like your favorite style,
- 32:11like in a field or hunting water over floaters?
- 32:16It depends because down there you hunt sheet water. And then up here,
- 32:19of course, we hunt a little of both.
- 32:21I mean, we have our full body spread on usually a pond set up.
- 32:25And then we have our sock spread that we chase, whatever we want to hunt, like a field wise.
- 32:30So that's helpful. I would always like, I don't know, I just like hunting the water.
- 32:34Like, fields are fun, but I don't know, something different about seeing a duck
- 32:38or a goose do it over a lake or a pond or sheet water, any of that. Yeah.
- 32:44Depends on the water and the mud, though, because shooting that many snow geese
- 32:46and chasing all those cripples kind of sucks.
- 32:50Yeah. I mean, there's only so many a dog can go get it before it's tired.
- 32:54What about you, Zach, ZB? What's your preferred style? Land,
- 32:58water, whatever? I would say it depends on the state.
- 33:03Fair enough if you're hunting Iowa what are you hunting pond migratory spread for sure and I'm.
- 33:13You what's your best day in Iowa you've had hmm,
- 33:18I think mine is and that was we were running and gunning I think 65,
- 33:25I bet yeah that's probably mine too it's a pile of dirt 65,
- 33:30that's kind of and they did it dirty all those do you guys clean all the snow
- 33:34geese you kill or do you guys like give some to farmers or whatever no we we
- 33:38breast them all out for sure and then Zach makes his famous brats He's got brats for days.
- 33:45I know the feeling. If anybody needs some. What kind of brats did you make this year?
- 33:50Jalapeno cheddar. That's my go-to. Yeah, actually jalapenos.
- 33:56I did it a little bit different this year. I put jalapenos from my garden from last year in them.
- 34:00I diced them up and grinded them up with those. Organic. Straight farm to table.
- 34:08Look at this guy. Speaking of farms, Cody, I heard you got quite the farm going on.
- 34:12Oh, yeah. We got goats, turkeys, chickens, quail. Quite the funny farm.
- 34:17Oh, my God. You screw all those?
- 34:19Huh? You screw all those or just the goats?
- 34:23Just the goats. They screw each other. I was like, quail is making me a little nervous.
- 34:31Do you guys prefer hunting with or without dogs when you hunt snows?
- 34:36Definitely with. Absolutely, you got to have a dog. Yeah.
- 34:42No two-legged retrieves for you guys? Oh, there is plenty of that, too. Yeah.
- 34:48Yeah. I can't imagine shooting that many birds in sheet water,
- 34:54just mud up past your ankles.
- 34:57Trying to get that in the words. With Arkansas, the sand, the sand gets in your
- 35:02gun and really just gums everything, which is a downfall, but... Yes, it does.
- 35:07Do not miss the gun cleaning sessions I used to have at sometimes midnight or
- 35:12one o'clock in the morning after setting the 2000 fucking full-body spread.
- 35:16Well, that's because you only clean your gun once a year now that you're here.
- 35:21No, no. You clean your gun once a year?
- 35:24I clean my gun all the time. Yeah. They usually just try to hold it under the
- 35:28water and cycle the action a few times.
- 35:31And then spray WD-40 on it. Hey, as long as it cycles and shoots,
- 35:35it doesn't matter. It's fine. True.
- 35:38Speaking of guns, what's your go-to gun, Cody?
- 35:43SX4. I've got two of them usually in the field next to me during snow view season. My guy.
- 35:49ZB Kitchens, I know, has been making the slow switch over.
- 35:54We'll see. He's 100, yeah. I usually rock the Benelli and then I have the SX2
- 36:00next to me. And the SX2 usually is tried and true when the Benelli goes click.
- 36:05Hate to say it. There it is. I hate to say it. I know all you guys,
- 36:10everybody I hunt with, they give me shit all the time. But I don't know. I just can't put it down.
- 36:18You know, you've been fighting that Benelli click for a long time now.
- 36:21You ought to just throw it in the lake and forget about it and go buy yourself an Ice-X4.
- 36:26Well, I made the bad call this year and bought an M2 as well.
- 36:29So just for snow view season when I went to Arkansas and first time I went up
- 36:34and pulled up on a group, it cycled two times and then didn't fire after.
- 36:39Do you just like punishing yourself?
- 36:43Some days, yeah. And if you want to ask Cody, I probably yell at my gun almost
- 36:48every time we go out, at least once or twice.
- 36:50And if he doesn't, I usually yell at him to change guns. Yeah, that is true.
- 36:56And there's probably a lot more birds that could have been killed if my gun
- 36:58didn't go click. I will agree to that statement.
- 37:02Well, at least you agree to it. You are one of the only Benelli guys that admits
- 37:07to the Benelli click being a problem.
- 37:09Yeah, this next year I'm going to fix all my springs. I'm going to redo all
- 37:14of them and put heavier springs in everything.
- 37:17That should help. I've done a lot of research in this off season,
- 37:20and I think that's what I'm going to do and see if it makes a difference.
- 37:24What if it doesn't? Then can you throw it in the lake? I will probably retire
- 37:28both Benelis and keep them for duck season only because every time I'm duck
- 37:33hunting or goose hunting, they cycle through the first three shots because you
- 37:37can only have three, obviously.
- 37:39But when you put that extension tube on it, I don't know what it is.
- 37:44Speaking of extension tubes Have you guys ever heard of the X-Rail?
- 37:48Or ever used one? Used to hold, what was it, 25 shells?
- 37:52I've seen them I'd like to buy one Do they still make them?
- 37:57No, they do not I remember the hams used to have those in all their guns The Max Rails.
- 38:04And it looked wicked That had to be heavy A whole box of shells in the palm of your hand,
- 38:09Yeah, I'm sure Go ahead I was going to say I know with having 12 It's pretty
- 38:15heavy alone It takes a lot of recoil away though too.
- 38:21It's heavy. What brand do you guys have?
- 38:25I don't know much about extension tubes because I don't Snuggish Sun anymore,
- 38:29ever. But is there certain brands that are better than others on extension tubes?
- 38:34I mean, I think a lot of them guys, from what I read and everything, Nordic's pretty good.
- 38:40I haven't personally used one. I just have a bunch of Carlson ones that I have.
- 38:45Carlson's pretty respectable on all of his stuff.
- 38:48I've got one Nordic component on my 13 round, but my eight round is a Carlson.
- 38:57So we talked about dogs or no dogs and layouts or whites. How do you guys feel
- 39:01about the pressure levels in certain areas with not just the outfitters,
- 39:05but also just all the people that do freelance snow goose hunting nowadays and travel doing it?
- 39:09I mean, there's so many different people or so many people nowadays that travel,
- 39:14for waterfowl hunting in general, not just ducks, geese, and whatever.
- 39:18But how has that affected you guys through the past years?
- 39:22I don't think it's affected us much at all. I mean, there's guys that just don't
- 39:26have any formation to their spread. No different than Canada goose hunting.
- 39:29I mean, they look like a blob out there and they don't look realistic and they're
- 39:33either going to kill geese or they're not.
- 39:35How much of it is like a setup compared to being on the spot?
- 39:39Like not, maybe not the X if you're on in traffic, obviously, or migrators.
- 39:43How much is it set up that affects your hunt compared to just,
- 39:46because obviously you're running an e-collar. So, I mean, there's a little bit
- 39:49of talent that goes into like running an e-collar correctly,
- 39:53but also the spread is probably your biggest part on if you're going to pull
- 39:57them down or not, finish them.
- 39:59Yeah, definitely. There was, for instance, now in Arkansas, one time there was
- 40:03a roost, Oh, about 500 yards away.
- 40:07And we had a strong North wind. It was to the West of us. So we set up next
- 40:10to it and they just trickled in one by onesies and twosies all day.
- 40:14And that was probably my favorite hunt.
- 40:16There was a spread just North of us and they weren't killing nothing. Like a mile.
- 40:21Yeah. It makes you feel good about yourself when something like that happens.
- 40:26Yeah, especially when they came out there. Go ahead. Sorry. No, go ahead.
- 40:31I was going to say, it makes you feel good, especially when they come down the
- 40:35road, that's dead-end road when we're leaving, and say, you guys shoot them really close.
- 40:41If it was Zach's choice, he wouldn't shoot them close. He'd shoot them at 80,
- 40:44but I prefer them under 30.
- 40:48Yeah, I imagine if Cade was here, he'd be like, yeah, I'd prefer the 82. Yeah, no doubt.
- 40:57Saw some jump shooters we talked about that earlier a little bit depends on
- 41:00where you're at arkansas is pretty bad with jump shooters but,
- 41:05i feel like birds get stale once they get up here and jump shooters kind of
- 41:09help us around here kind of help push the birds around really yeah make room for new ones,
- 41:15what about you austin what do you got what do you got to ask these guys anything
- 41:18i can't hear tyler now oh great he can't hear you i know i can hear everybody else but tyler.
- 41:26Nothing really to ask you just more so of a funny story like,
- 41:31the first time ever experiencing anything snow goose related was in north dakota,
- 41:37last year had obviously hunted with zach like multiple times before then never
- 41:43saw that dude like with an ounce of excitement
- 41:46dude we pull up to this massive feed of snows and he looked like he was a 10
- 41:51year old kid on christmas just amped And I'm like,
- 41:55dude, all right, like this, like this must be really cool.
- 41:59I can't wait. And it was cool. Like it was a, it was a cool experience to be
- 42:03able to go out there and, and obviously see that side of things and pile up
- 42:08a whole bunch of snows out there too. But yeah.
- 42:11If you think he gets excited, you should see me. I at least throw up at least
- 42:14a couple times before I get into the blind or lay down.
- 42:18That's the commitment that we need. Oh, yeah.
- 42:21Zach, I'm going to need to see you throw up a couple times this year.
- 42:28Yeah. I don't throw up like Cody does. Cody gets really excited. Yeah.
- 42:34There's sometimes you just know if you're going to get him good,
- 42:39and that's usually when Cody gets a little anxious and he starts puking,
- 42:42and then you know it's going to be a good day. That's awesome.
- 42:46I don't know. Zach threw up quite a bit that night in the cabin.
- 42:51Yes. Yeah, no, he did for sure.
- 42:57Yeah, he said that you threw up quite a bit that night in the cabin. Yes, yes, I did.
- 43:04Yeah, not my proudest moment. That's all right.
- 43:08The best part was he had no idea that he did it until he woke up and he's like
- 43:11he kept finding more spots that he threw up in yeah I could not believe we just
- 43:17kept turning corners in that cabin like,
- 43:20one bedroom one bathroom cabin four dudes in there just keep turning corners finding puke,
- 43:28gross has he done that to you Cody on a trip yet just threw up everywhere randomly,
- 43:33what do you say I can hear you now,
- 43:36has he ever thrown up on you randomly anywhere like on your guys' trips getting
- 43:40hammered no I cheated his ass one time about getting drunk and hunting the next
- 43:45morning because he's a dick.
- 43:50Did you see Kara's comment? No, I did not. Yeah, she said, take all the brats. We have too many.
- 43:58So we'll be over for a shipment of them for sure.
- 44:03Yeah, I'm actually getting ready to take some, I think, to Milo and get some
- 44:06patties made. Go drop them all off at Cody's house.
- 44:11Cody, you got the storage? I got two deep crangers. Zach, can you still not hear me?
- 44:19No, I don't think he can. Yeah, no shot. I was going to say,
- 44:23how can I get this so then it refreshes, I guess?
- 44:28I don't know if he just left the chat. That's going to work really well. Yeah. I don't know.
- 44:35There he is. I can hear you now, Tyler. Oh, yay. Woo-hoo.
- 44:42As soon as we start to roll into our closing moments. Right.
- 44:46I guess before we kind of start wrapping this up, what are some tips and or
- 44:51tricks that you guys can use or tell people that you guys have found to be successful
- 44:55without giving away your secrets to it? Scout.
- 44:59Scout and pay attention to detail if you need wind.
- 45:04For me, stay under the flight line. You got to see where they're going and stay under them.
- 45:12Scouting goes a long ways for everything, really, honestly. I think it's One
- 45:17of the biggest things When it comes to hunting If you want to be Successful,
- 45:20Yeah And your hide I mean that's all Waterfowl though Yeah Um,
- 45:25Yeah, well.
- 45:28Sometimes it's a little bit of luck. Sometimes it's just skill and making sure
- 45:34you're hitting and putting the time and effort into scouting, really.
- 45:38But, I mean, there's a lot of times where I take a gamble and hunt somewhere
- 45:42and it's like, well, that really worked out.
- 45:44Every hunt you learn something new, too. I mean, that's what the most fun about
- 45:47it is. You never know everything. Right.
- 45:51Well, we really appreciate you guys coming on today. It's been good to chat with you guys.
- 45:57Mr. Newendorp texted me and said that the storms got too bad where he was,
- 46:00so he had to leave the chat. His internet was cutting out too much.
- 46:05Well, thanks for having us. Sorry, my internet's Walmart connection over here. And that Kmart Wi-Fi.
- 46:12Yeah, something like that.
- 46:14That happens, though. We've all been there. Pookie has a Kmart laptop he can't figure out. I do, yeah.
- 46:21It's my wife's actually, so make fun of her, not me. I don't have one.
- 46:26Well, she set it up today and it worked just fine, so I don't know what your
- 46:29problem is. Yeah. Yeah, me and Tyler were able to do it the other night just fine too.
- 46:35She's the brains of this operation. I just make us look good.
- 46:39Let's not get carried away.
- 46:43Well. But yeah, no, it's been fun. Appreciate you guys coming on once again
- 46:48and hopefully we gotta do some hunting again this, this year sometime.
- 46:54I know, I know we haven't got to hunt yet together, Cody. We talked about it
- 46:57at Zach's wedding a little bit. So hopefully this year at some point we can
- 47:00get together and get on in. Definitely.
- 47:04But that'll wrap up this episode of the duck palace podcast.
- 47:08We appreciate everybody that tuned in and make sure you are subscribed to our,
- 47:14any destination we post to. And we guys never missed an episode and you're always up to date.
- 47:19But until next time make sure you spam Zach Newendorp's DMs and tell him that
- 47:25he is a piece of shit until next time have a good one.
