Latest / Hurdle with Emily Abbate / 5-MINUTE FRIDAY: Finding Calm In a Hurricane
Transcript
- 0:20Speaker 1: Hey everyone, Emily Badi here, you are listening to five
- 0:23Speaker 1: Minute Friday from Hurdle. I cannot believe this is the
- 0:26Speaker 1: last five Minute Friday as a part of season six.
- 0:31Speaker 1: We're taking a week long break, but coming back come
- 0:35Speaker 1: September thirteenth in a really, really big way with a
- 0:38Speaker 1: lot of really exciting news and things that I know you,
- 0:44Speaker 1: as a hurdler are going to be really amped about.
- 0:46Speaker 1: That We've been working really hard on behind the scenes. Huge,
- 0:49Speaker 1: huge kudos to my assistant, the wonderful Chelsea for helping me,
- 0:55Speaker 1: gosh so through all of the madness that goes on
- 0:58Speaker 1: in my mind. I would be remiss if today's Five
- 1:02Speaker 1: Minute Friday wasn't about the what felt like apocalypse that
- 1:06Speaker 1: I experienced yesterday, which was traversing my way home from
- 1:12Speaker 1: the US Open in Queens to my apartment in Brooklyn.
- 1:16Speaker 1: So I'm sure you if you are listening to this,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you heard the news if you're not based in the Northeast,
- 1:21Speaker 1: that we got clabbered, like absolutely clobbered with the remnants
- 1:27Speaker 1: of what was Hurricane Ida here on Wednesday evening, and
- 1:33Speaker 1: so I was at the US Open when this really
- 1:37Speaker 1: started to come down. Thankfully, Arthur Ashe stadium. I was
- 1:42Speaker 1: there to watch Slan Stevens. She was amazing. When I
- 1:46Speaker 1: was there, There's a roof on Arthur Ash, so that
- 1:48Speaker 1: was a non issue. But as we're sitting watching the
- 1:52Speaker 1: tennis matches, it was crazy because you thought, like that low, dull,
- 1:57Speaker 1: rumbling noise could be like an can get like a
- 2:00Speaker 1: large I don't know air filtration, air conditioning situation, but
- 2:04Speaker 1: it's really just like sheets of water hitting the dome
- 2:09Speaker 1: the US open and so when my friend and I
- 2:12Speaker 1: go to leave the stadium, it is just buckets, like
- 2:17Speaker 1: sheets of water, and we look at each other and
- 2:19Speaker 1: we're like, literally, there's no point in opening an umbrella
- 2:22Speaker 1: because we're just gonna get soaked. I'm wearing like a
- 2:25Speaker 1: full length MAXI Nike skirt that no like that seriously
- 2:30Speaker 1: was just drenched. We started we at different points getting
- 2:34Speaker 1: to the car, like we were wading through water that
- 2:36Speaker 1: was up to like at least mid calf height in
- 2:40Speaker 1: a parking lot. Like literally, I've never seen anything like
- 2:44Speaker 1: this at all. So once we start driving, we wait
- 2:48Speaker 1: for it to die down what seems like a little bit.
- 2:50Speaker 1: At one point, we were listening to this radio station
- 2:52Speaker 1: ten ten Wins, and on ten ten Wins they said
- 2:54Speaker 1: that the rain was coming down at three inches an
- 2:57Speaker 1: hour at one point, so I think by the time
- 3:00Speaker 1: we started driving, it was more like one inch an hour.
- 3:03Speaker 1: And we started to make our way back toward my
- 3:07Speaker 1: apartment in Brooklyn, and I again, it looked like the apocalypse.
- 3:11Speaker 1: There were cars driving every which way. So many roads
- 3:15Speaker 1: were they weren't actually like closed, they were just flooded.
- 3:20Speaker 1: And you would see a car go down one way
- 3:23Speaker 1: and then go to turn around and come back another way.
- 3:26Speaker 1: There were cars making U turns absolutely everywhere, but some
- 3:31Speaker 1: cars trying to make it through like super deep water
- 3:33Speaker 1: and then they'd get stuck, and so it was nuts.
- 3:37Speaker 1: And I tell you all this not just to share
- 3:40Speaker 1: this experience with a ton of people on the Internet,
- 3:43Speaker 1: but more so because this was a prime example of
- 3:47Speaker 1: me feeling as though the mindfulness that I've been integrating
- 3:51Speaker 1: into my routine was really paying off in that I gosh,
- 3:57Speaker 1: was I nervous as hell? Yes? Was I anxious? Hell? Yes?
- 4:00Speaker 1: I think I may have mentioned this on the show before,
- 4:03Speaker 1: but years and years ago, I want to say, like
- 4:06Speaker 1: maybe ten years ago. At this point, I was driving
- 4:08Speaker 1: with an ex boyfriend on my way to Yukon, I
- 4:11Speaker 1: went to school at the University of Connecticut, and we're
- 4:13Speaker 1: driving up there and it started to snow, and we
- 4:15Speaker 1: were so close into getting into a really really bad accident,
- 4:20Speaker 1: and that the car did a one eighty on the
- 4:23Speaker 1: highway and for a moment we were driving backward. And
- 4:26Speaker 1: ever since then, I've just been super scarred on driving
- 4:30Speaker 1: in englement weather. And so last night, I don't know
- 4:37Speaker 1: what I mean, I know what came over me, so
- 4:40Speaker 1: to speak. What came over me was the fact that
- 4:41Speaker 1: I knew that I couldn't do anything in this moment
- 4:44Speaker 1: to change my circumstance. And so what we did was
- 4:48Speaker 1: we evaluated our options and we proceeded with caution and
- 4:52Speaker 1: the best way that felt right in the moment. And
- 4:56Speaker 1: so rather than you know, freaking out or crying or
- 5:00Speaker 1: losing my shit or getting angry about the circumstance, it
- 5:05Speaker 1: was just like, Okay, well this is how it is now.
- 5:08Speaker 1: And that doesn't mean that it was any less scary
- 5:12Speaker 1: er that I didn't have anxiety. It was just more
- 5:15Speaker 1: so that I had the opportunity in that moment to
- 5:18Speaker 1: react in a way that was productive and use the
- 5:21Speaker 1: tools that I have started to harness in my mindfulness
- 5:25Speaker 1: practice to get through that situation. I've talked about the show.
- 5:29Speaker 1: I'm not the best at meditating. I'm actually really excited
- 5:32Speaker 1: because I just was gifted the Core Meditation Trainer. I
- 5:37Speaker 1: know that hyper Rice just acquired them. This isn't sponsored
- 5:40Speaker 1: in any way, They're not a sponsor on the show,
- 5:42Speaker 1: but I'm really excited to start trying this out. I'll
- 5:45Speaker 1: link to it in the show notes if you want
- 5:46Speaker 1: to give it a look see as well. But I
- 5:49Speaker 1: don't have a regular meditation practice, but I do have
- 5:52Speaker 1: a pretty solid mindfulness practice, and that whether it's on
- 5:56Speaker 1: my run or something that Victoria Albina when she was
- 6:01Speaker 1: on the show was you can find holes and pockets
- 6:04Speaker 1: for mindfulness in your everyday routine where you may not
- 6:08Speaker 1: think that they could be so. For example, when she
- 6:11Speaker 1: was on the show, she talked about paying attention to
- 6:13Speaker 1: putting your jewelry on and feeling the weight of your
- 6:16Speaker 1: ring as it slides onto your finger, and perhaps the
- 6:19Speaker 1: same when you put a necklace around your neck, and
- 6:21Speaker 1: then the same as you put on a bracelet on
- 6:25Speaker 1: your right wrist, Like being very intentional and mindful about
- 6:29Speaker 1: how that feels and being very present in that moment.
- 6:32Speaker 1: And so if you're like someone that like me at
- 6:35Speaker 1: times has said like, oh, I'm no good at meditating, Like,
- 6:38Speaker 1: it doesn't need to be a full on twenty minutes
- 6:40Speaker 1: to sit cross legged on a pillow to make a
- 6:44Speaker 1: major difference in your day to day. And I would
- 6:46Speaker 1: say again that this mindfulness practice, whether it's intentionally putting
- 6:49Speaker 1: on my jewelry or taking some time for myself on
- 6:52Speaker 1: my run just to close my eyes and be so
- 6:54Speaker 1: present in the world around me and take a deep
- 6:57Speaker 1: breath and feel gratitude and case capable, it's it's really
- 7:02Speaker 1: paid off for me. So that was my that was
- 7:05Speaker 1: my Wednesday night. Really grateful that I'm safe. And I
- 7:08Speaker 1: hope that if you're listening to this and you're in
- 7:09Speaker 1: the area, that you are safe, that your homes are okay,
- 7:11Speaker 1: that your families are safe as well. Uh and uh,
- 7:14Speaker 1: my thoughts and prayers really are not just in the
- 7:18Speaker 1: area where I am, but of course down especially in
- 7:20Speaker 1: the New Orleans area. I donated to an organization that
- 7:24Speaker 1: a girlfriend of mine shared the other day. It's called
- 7:27Speaker 1: World Central Kitchen. World Central Kitchens in New Orleans Right
- 7:31Speaker 1: after the storm passed, they began preparing hot, fresh meals
- 7:34Speaker 1: along with sandwiches and fruit for first responders and families
- 7:37Speaker 1: that were impacted. So again I donated to them earlier.
- 7:40Speaker 1: This week, I'm going to put their information in the
- 7:43Speaker 1: show notes in case you want to donate and help
- 7:46Speaker 1: the relief effort as well. And now my prompt for
- 7:49Speaker 1: you this week, what is one way that you can
- 7:52Speaker 1: be more mindful in your day to day routine? Again?
- 7:55Speaker 1: What is one way you can be more mindful in
- 7:58Speaker 1: your day today routine? And now a listener question. Hi Emily,
- 8:04Speaker 1: It's Christina originally from New York but now living in Denver.
- 8:08Speaker 1: Wanted to know how you wash your workout clothes and
- 8:11Speaker 1: what you can do to get the stink out. Thanks
- 8:13Speaker 1: so much. Bye. You know I get this question all
- 8:17Speaker 1: the time, and I mean I sweat a ton, and yes,
- 8:20Speaker 1: my sweat smells cute. I know, But I just use
- 8:25Speaker 1: regular tithe to wash my workout clothes. I've I've been
- 8:29Speaker 1: pitched like special sport detergents before. I also have a
- 8:32Speaker 1: practice that right after I'm done working out, especially when
- 8:35Speaker 1: the clothes are drenched, I will then lay them or
- 8:40Speaker 1: hang them so that they can kind of dry off
- 8:42Speaker 1: before putting them into a laundry bin. And I pretty
- 8:45Speaker 1: regularly do my laundry. Like I'm I would safely say
- 8:48Speaker 1: that I do laundry at least once a week. Granted,
- 8:52Speaker 1: of course, it was not that way when I didn't
- 8:55Speaker 1: have a washer dryer in my home. What I will
- 8:59Speaker 1: say is that the sooner I find you wash your
- 9:02Speaker 1: clothes after you're done working out in them, the better
- 9:05Speaker 1: chance you will have of not having them smell long term.
- 9:10Speaker 1: I've also heard some other tricks like throw in a
- 9:12Speaker 1: little bit of vinegar, add some baking soda to your
- 9:15Speaker 1: laundry load. Also, perhaps it can help to wash your
- 9:19Speaker 1: clothes inside out. And another tip that I heard was
- 9:23Speaker 1: skipping fabric softener somehow can also help with this whole thing.
- 9:28Speaker 1: If you have more tips and tricks, feel free to
- 9:30Speaker 1: shoot the Hurdle Instagram a DM over at Hurdle podcasts.
- 9:34Speaker 1: Of course, you know I'm also over at Emily a body.
- 9:37Speaker 1: I want to say again, thanks so much hurdlers for
- 9:39Speaker 1: such an unbelievable season. We heard from so many amazing
- 9:44Speaker 1: guests and experts, and I keep coming back season after
- 9:48Speaker 1: season because of you, Because of the opportunity to help
- 9:53Speaker 1: just one person somewhere, so it would mean the world
- 9:56Speaker 1: to me. And I know I call this out pretty regularly,
- 9:58Speaker 1: but season seven coming to a close. Season seven, I'm
- 10:02Speaker 1: coming in hot in a really big way with giveaways
- 10:05Speaker 1: and just some really exciting stuff that I'm not ready
- 10:08Speaker 1: to share just yet. So just can't continue to support
- 10:12Speaker 1: the show and support me and share the episodes and
- 10:15Speaker 1: rate it in the Apple Podcast Store wherever you get
- 10:18Speaker 1: your podcasts, and you know, take part with the sponsors
- 10:22Speaker 1: like all of it. It all matters and you matter.
- 10:25Speaker 1: So thank you, really from the bottom of my heart.
- 10:29Speaker 1: That's it for now, another hurdle conquered. Catch you guys
- 10:34Speaker 1: next time.
