- 3:05Speaker 1: the Peterson Event Center in Pittsburgh, PA to take on
- 3:09Speaker 1: the pitt Panthers for the sec ACC Challenge. They are
- 3:15Speaker 1: coming off by far their best outing of the year
- 3:20Speaker 1: last Friday against Florida State. Tonight, Bragging Rights Conference, Bragging
- 3:26Speaker 1: Rights on the Line. I looked up the new net rankings.
- 3:33Speaker 1: A and M is seventy eight, Pitt is one forty five.
- 3:38Speaker 1: A and M should win. Doesn't always work that way.
- 3:42Speaker 1: Michigan's number one in the net. Then Duke Perdue. I
- 3:47Speaker 1: can't read my own writing. I wrote it down so fast.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Is it a V? That couldn't be a V? Because
- 3:57Speaker 1: Zaga is on their Arizona's on there. I would state
- 3:59Speaker 1: you Conn, Louisville, Michigan State, Vandy. Of course, Vandy's number
- 4:04Speaker 1: four the net. Wow, Vandy. It's the year of the
- 4:09Speaker 1: Door in Nashville, man, it is the year of the door,
- 4:15Speaker 1: and right now they probably have the Heisman favorite on campus.
- 4:20Speaker 1: I'm just gonna say it. Unless Mendoza or saying just
- 4:27Speaker 1: put on a clinic Saturday night, right They could do it.
- 4:31Speaker 1: We them could do it for certain. I'm just gonna
- 4:35Speaker 1: tell you they better put on a clinic to suade me.
- 4:39Speaker 1: But I can't say that right now. Can't tell you
- 4:42Speaker 1: who I'm voting for. My vote has to be in
- 4:45Speaker 1: by Monday afternoon. But I'll watch the games and we'll
- 4:51Speaker 1: see what happens. The other acc SEC games Oklahoma, Wake Forest,
- 4:58Speaker 1: Tennessee at Syracuse, Virginia Tech, South Carolina, Florida, and Duke Georgia,
- 5:05Speaker 1: Florida State, Missouri, Notre Dame, Miami, Ole, miss North Carolina, Kentucky.
- 5:15Speaker 1: That's telling Caleb, I don't know if I can stay
- 5:16Speaker 1: up for the end of that game it does. It
- 5:18Speaker 1: starts at eight thirty, which means eight forty five, so
- 5:23Speaker 1: I'm probably not going to make it. Tomorrow night Moore, LSU,
- 5:29Speaker 1: Boston College, Louisville, Arkansas, Clemson at Alabama, Mississippi State, Georgia Tech,
- 5:37Speaker 1: North Carolina State, Auburn, Virginia at Texas, and SMU Vanderbilt.
- 5:43Speaker 1: All of those games are on the tube. By the way,
- 5:51Speaker 1: Kentucky's playing tonight right against North Carolina. Friday night, they're
- 5:57Speaker 1: at the Music City Madness Tournament to play Gonzaga. I
- 6:03Speaker 1: mean these teams. I love the fact that you see
- 6:06Speaker 1: the best playing the best, and the way the CFP,
- 6:12Speaker 1: the CFP has screwed everything up. I'm concerned that that's
- 6:16Speaker 1: not going to happen anymore. Remember two years ago, three
- 6:19Speaker 1: years ago, they told everybody, hey, strength the schedule, you
- 6:22Speaker 1: got to start scheduling. And now it's like, h you
- 6:27Speaker 1: go twelve and zero against Gumby Tech and you're in.
- 6:31Speaker 1: You know, we we lied about that. Yon, Kansas, uh
- 6:36Speaker 1: Yukon and Kansas. That's tonight too, right, Okay, A damn,
- 6:44Speaker 1: that's at eight our time. Yes, and I don't have
- 6:49Speaker 1: the oh yes, I do. Wait a minute, I do
- 6:51Speaker 1: have the whole list. Michigan State's hosting Iowa, uh Yukon
- 6:56Speaker 1: and Kansas. Oh that's at Allen Fieldhouse. I'm gonna have
- 6:59Speaker 1: to watch that. That's ESPN two. That'll be right after
- 7:03Speaker 1: the A and M game. So yeah, I can do that.
- 7:06Speaker 1: That'll work. Okay, a lot of hoop tonight, and A
- 7:14Speaker 1: and M you know, goes to SMU that's on Sunday afternoon,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and then that's at four o'clock Sunday, I think technically site. Yeah,
- 7:31Speaker 1: it's at ut Arlington, which is weird. I don't understand
- 7:35Speaker 1: that at all. Why couldn't they do a home and
- 7:37Speaker 1: home with SMU? Would that? Would that have killed anybody
- 7:42Speaker 1: to sign up SMU for a home and home. I mean,
- 7:46Speaker 1: it's not like SMU is a huge powerhouse. But I
- 7:51Speaker 1: don't know. You you might could get a quad one
- 7:53Speaker 1: win depending where's SMU in the net? Caleb, Look, come
- 7:58Speaker 1: and see where SMU is in the net, because they're
- 8:00Speaker 1: pretty good. I don't know why they wouldn't do that
- 8:04Speaker 1: and why they're playing at UT Arlington. I don't get
- 8:06Speaker 1: that at all. But hey, TV's doing it, so maybe
- 8:09Speaker 1: they're the ones that did everything forty one they're forty
- 8:13Speaker 1: one in the net.
- 8:13Speaker 4: Wow.
- 8:15Speaker 1: By the way, Texas Tech has extended Joey McGuire seven years,
- 8:21Speaker 1: seven million a year. Some more of that. Good Cody
- 8:24Speaker 1: Campbell money and the Tyler Rose Earl Campbell Player of
- 8:28Speaker 1: the Week Texas State quarterback Brad Jackson. All he did
- 8:32Speaker 1: was twenty of twenty six for twot eighty two scores,
- 8:35Speaker 1: rushed for another one hundred and thirteen yards and three touchdowns,
- 8:39Speaker 1: and the Bobcats became Bowl eligible last Saturday. Good on them.
- 8:45Speaker 1: All right, I told you I'm going to start replaying
- 8:48Speaker 1: some of my best, my favorite interviews. They may not
- 8:52Speaker 1: be the best. You'll be the judge of that. But
- 8:54Speaker 1: Eric Moyan wrote like a dictionary long book on the
- 8:59Speaker 1: history of college sports. Right now, we're going to jump
- 9:03Speaker 1: out to the Player's Fund Center phone line and visit
- 9:06Speaker 1: with Eric Moyen. And he has co written a book
- 9:10Speaker 1: called College Sports a History. It is thorough. Eric, Thanks
- 9:16Speaker 1: for your time. What did you learn when you started
- 9:19Speaker 1: researching for this book.
- 9:22Speaker 4: The research for this book actually started about twenty five
- 9:26Speaker 4: years ago when my co author who directed my dissertation
- 9:31Speaker 4: and died. The mentor. His name's John Dewn and he's
- 9:34Speaker 4: a real authority in the history of higher ed. About
- 9:38Speaker 4: twenty five years ago, I took a class hire and athletics,
- 9:41Speaker 4: and so I started to learn about these different things.
- 9:44Speaker 4: And I'm from Lexington, Kentucky. So I was doing my
- 9:48Speaker 4: PhD at UK and after graduation I was asked to
- 9:54Speaker 4: write a biography of an individual named Saint McVeigh. He
- 9:58Speaker 4: was President of UK for over twenty years. Kind of
- 10:01Speaker 4: turned it in from a small you know, a lot
- 10:04Speaker 4: of state schools around World War One when he took
- 10:08Speaker 4: overhead about a thousand students, and by the time he left,
- 10:11Speaker 4: right before World War Two, they had, you know, six
- 10:14Speaker 4: thousand students in a graduate school. And and but in
- 10:18Speaker 4: that process of writing this biography, in his role at UK,
- 10:22Speaker 4: I stumbled across all these boxes in his finals and
- 10:25Speaker 4: he was the founding president of the Southeastern Conference, and
- 10:30Speaker 4: just boxes and boxes of correspondence. And I really learned
- 10:34Speaker 4: then that athletics is a big deal. And a lot
- 10:38Speaker 4: of times academics say things like, oh, well, this is
- 10:42Speaker 4: this odd, you know, appendage to what's going on in
- 10:47Speaker 4: higher education, and the reality is it's not. For schools
- 10:52Speaker 4: large and small, athletics played a huge part in the
- 10:56Speaker 4: lifeblood of institutions, and as a way to keep alumni
- 10:59Speaker 4: and get aged, and as a way to provide pr
- 11:02Speaker 4: you know, you think a long time ago, Texas A M.
- 11:05Speaker 4: How is Texas A and M going to end up
- 11:07Speaker 4: in national press in nineteen thirty nine, right, The way
- 11:13Speaker 4: to do it, The way you're going to end up
- 11:14Speaker 4: in the New York Times is to win football games.
- 11:17Speaker 4: And presidents understood this, and so the kind of the
- 11:21Speaker 4: hilarity about it is Frank McVeigh was anti football, and
- 11:25Speaker 4: so he was working with a bunch of presidents trying
- 11:28Speaker 4: to de emphasize college athletics. And so this group forms
- 11:32Speaker 4: out of the old Southern Conference which went from Maryland
- 11:36Speaker 4: to Louisiana, and he formed a smaller group and the
- 11:41Speaker 4: goal of the SEC was to get commercialization out of
- 11:47Speaker 4: college athletics and bring it under the umbrella a really
- 11:51Speaker 4: ee in the academic enterprise. And so I've always kind
- 11:54Speaker 4: of joked with folks that the SEC is the most
- 11:57Speaker 4: successful failure ever because other presidents knew and understood what
- 12:04Speaker 4: this was all about. You can look at names on stadiums,
- 12:06Speaker 4: you know Ryant Denny. Denny is George Denny, who helped
- 12:11Speaker 4: build their stadium Stanford at UGA. He's their president and
- 12:16Speaker 4: he wants big time football, and so it's tied in
- 12:19Speaker 4: with this higher end policy. And I think that's really fascinating.
- 12:23Speaker 1: And one thing that should not surprise anyone is it
- 12:27Speaker 1: was in fact the SEC years ago that led the
- 12:31Speaker 1: way and admitting, hey, let's start getting some students quote
- 12:36Speaker 1: into school that are really good at football.
- 12:40Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely, And the first to begin offering scholarships, well,
- 12:46Speaker 4: let me say that a different way. The first to
- 12:49Speaker 4: offer scholarships above board, yeah, and say hey, we're just
- 12:52Speaker 4: doing this, and the SEC in the Old Southwest Conference
- 12:59Speaker 4: and then it would become the ACC. Those three conferences,
- 13:06Speaker 4: there was a lot of tumult in the nineteen forties
- 13:09Speaker 4: fifties about this, but the SEC was first and there
- 13:12Speaker 4: was a real divide. So when things happened like Texas
- 13:16Speaker 4: and Oklahoma joining the SEC, and you know, the ACC
- 13:22Speaker 4: and Big Ten and Pack twelve forming an alliance, you know, oh,
- 13:27Speaker 4: we're not going to Yeah, those animal those rivalries existed
- 13:34Speaker 4: in the thirties, forties and fifties when the Old Southwest
- 13:39Speaker 4: Conference and the SEC in particular fought battles at the
- 13:42Speaker 4: NC double A over various policies and practices, and the
- 13:47Speaker 4: Southwest Conference and the SEC would say, hey, we have
- 13:51Speaker 4: to offer well not publicly, but they would say we
- 13:54Speaker 4: need to offer scholarships because these wealthy Pacific Coast common
- 14:00Speaker 4: Prints or within the Pack eight or the Big Ten Conference,
- 14:04Speaker 4: they provide student jobs for all the students or alumni
- 14:07Speaker 4: say hey, let me subsidize this kid. I'll just I'll
- 14:10Speaker 4: pay for his college. Well, then it's not officially a scholarship,
- 14:13Speaker 4: it's just a friend yes, helping out and so the
- 14:16Speaker 4: SEC in the Southwest Conference, and we just need to
- 14:19Speaker 4: be honest and say we're going to consider athletic talent
- 14:23Speaker 4: as part of the deal here when we recruitse too.
- 14:26Speaker 1: You know, one of the big issues or things that
- 14:29Speaker 1: jumped out to me was there is really nothing new
- 14:33Speaker 1: under the sun. This quote battle between academics and athletics
- 14:39Speaker 1: has been going on just about one hundred and thirty years,
- 14:42Speaker 1: has it not?
- 14:44Speaker 4: Absolutely since the very first intercollegiate event, which was a regatta,
- 14:50Speaker 4: you know, a boat race between Harvard and Yale, which
- 14:53Speaker 4: had a commercial sponsorship and they paid players to get there,
- 14:57Speaker 4: and newspaper report were there and they needed the press
- 15:02Speaker 4: to publicize and hype this. There's this idea that there
- 15:06Speaker 4: was a golden age when everything was just like a
- 15:11Speaker 4: small liberal arts college and you know, fifty people would
- 15:16Speaker 4: sit on the hillside and watch a game, and that's
- 15:19Speaker 4: really not the case. It's been there all along, and you.
- 15:22Speaker 1: Make a case that and you've already mentioned a little
- 15:26Speaker 1: bit from Kentucky's perspective, but we went from small colleges
- 15:33Speaker 1: to major universities and a lot of that growth was
- 15:37Speaker 1: fueled by athletics. Was it not?
- 15:41Speaker 4: Absolutely? You know, there's this unintended consequence. In the eighteen hundreds,
- 15:50Speaker 4: college sports, it was run by students. Students would write
- 15:54Speaker 4: letters to students at other places, and they'd try and
- 15:57Speaker 4: set up schedules. Well, all of a sudden, and by
- 16:00Speaker 4: the way, there were commercial sponsorships then two kids at Harvard,
- 16:04Speaker 4: Gale and Princeton. Cigarette companies would pay their star players
- 16:10Speaker 4: to smoke these certain cigarettes and sell them on campus.
- 16:13Speaker 4: And as students were more interested in the athletic endeavors
- 16:18Speaker 4: than some of their academics, faculty started to say, hey,
- 16:22Speaker 4: we need to get control of this. So the faculty
- 16:25Speaker 4: associations that developed to try and kind of rein in
- 16:30Speaker 4: some of the abuses that were going on. Playing ringers,
- 16:34Speaker 4: those were players who really weren't students, and they went around,
- 16:36Speaker 4: they're basically players for hire.
- 16:40Speaker 1: Changed right, right.
- 16:42Speaker 4: And so faculty put these things together to try and
- 16:47Speaker 4: reform the problems that they saw, and all of a sudden,
- 16:51Speaker 4: you have institutions behind this, and rather than a game
- 16:55Speaker 4: popping up here, a game popping up there. Newspapers know, hey,
- 16:58Speaker 4: these are the football skill here's the basketball schedule, this
- 17:02Speaker 4: is our home and away, this is our and it
- 17:04Speaker 4: actually gives life to a lot of these things. I
- 17:07Speaker 4: will say one one real success of the faculty influence
- 17:13Speaker 4: and the creation of the nc double A, which is
- 17:17Speaker 4: that we could spend an hour till yeah, just about that.
- 17:19Speaker 4: But his safety protocols in football. Football was an absolutely
- 17:25Speaker 4: violent game where players died every year, and the NCAA
- 17:31Speaker 4: came in and uh, well, the organization started to make
- 17:35Speaker 4: invented the allowed the forward pass and changed the downs
- 17:39Speaker 4: and spread out the field and that really really helped.
- 17:41Speaker 4: Well again, that help just popularizes more. So, Yes, it's
- 17:47Speaker 4: all part of this change and a fascinating story.
- 17:51Speaker 5: You know.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I'm trying to think of schools in Texas that might
- 17:53Speaker 4: be like this. I'm thinking of places like Trinity or
- 17:57Speaker 4: other small liberal arts schools that you know. The SEC
- 18:01Speaker 4: one of the founding members was Sewanee, with a small
- 18:05Speaker 4: little liberal arts college on the Cumberland Plateau between Chattanooga
- 18:09Speaker 4: and Nashville. And in the nineteen hundreds, in the early years,
- 18:13Speaker 4: Sawanee was as powerful as Texas and Alabama and anyone else.
- 18:19Speaker 4: And yet by the nineteen thirties they can't win a
- 18:22Speaker 4: game in the SEC because the institutional type had changed
- 18:26Speaker 4: that there weren't these state universities that had a thousand
- 18:29Speaker 4: students and looked similar to little Arts college. They had
- 18:32Speaker 4: become what we would call a research university. Yeah, and
- 18:36Speaker 4: where there's specialization, where there's faculty control over faculty issues.
- 18:41Speaker 4: But then athletic directors, who at the time were primarily coaches,
- 18:45Speaker 4: controlled their realm, and of course they wanted to expand
- 18:48Speaker 4: and grow that, and it was hard to find a
- 18:50Speaker 4: president who didn't agree.
- 18:53Speaker 1: It seemed like for about the last like I said,
- 18:56Speaker 1: one hundred and twenty five years, about every twenty five
- 19:00Speaker 1: years there is a group of people who commission a
- 19:04Speaker 1: study of athletics. You know, you had the Carnegie Report
- 19:09Speaker 1: years and years ago, the Night Commission. I'm certainly more
- 19:13Speaker 1: than old enough to remember all of that, and that
- 19:15Speaker 1: hadn't been that long ago. But it seems like we're
- 19:19Speaker 1: due here in another decade or so for another commission
- 19:22Speaker 1: of people to study athletics versus academics, aren't we right?
- 19:26Speaker 4: Absolutely, And in another sense, I think we may have
- 19:31Speaker 4: missed a real opportunity. The commissions that do develop from
- 19:39Speaker 4: the Carnegie Foundation to the Night Commission, that they have
- 19:43Speaker 4: historically had this very very to use a term that
- 19:47Speaker 4: folks did one hundred years ago, signon pure attitude, where
- 19:51Speaker 4: we're talking about pure amateurism. I'd be interested to hear
- 19:56Speaker 4: my co authors take He might have a different idea,
- 19:58Speaker 4: but I have a sense that we really missed an
- 20:01Speaker 4: opportunity about five years ago when NIO was coming and
- 20:06Speaker 4: we could have put a group together the nca NCAA
- 20:10Speaker 4: could have said, hey, this name image likeness is coming
- 20:14Speaker 4: and we need to understand that this is a reality.
- 20:17Speaker 4: Now let's use it to help keep athletes in school.
- 20:21Speaker 4: I'm thinking of Side MacLoughlin at Sydney Macgloplin at UK.
- 20:27Speaker 4: She won a bunch of gold medals in the Summer Olympics.
- 20:30Speaker 4: This last year. She was a freshman at UK and
- 20:32Speaker 4: she left. She loved being at UK, but she had
- 20:36Speaker 4: a new balance contract that she couldn't turn down. Why
- 20:40Speaker 4: couldn't we have said, and let's find a way to
- 20:43Speaker 4: if we believe in what we're selling, and I do
- 20:46Speaker 4: personally that higher ed matters and that it's good for
- 20:49Speaker 4: students to be here and this will change their life,
- 20:52Speaker 4: why don't we set something up where you've got these
- 20:54Speaker 4: two months during your off season to sign an nil deal,
- 20:58Speaker 4: the university will provide you presentation, let's tie it to
- 21:02Speaker 4: class attendance, Let's do these different things that really bring
- 21:07Speaker 4: athletics and academics together in some way. And instead the
- 21:11Speaker 4: NCAA tendant put their head into scenes.
- 21:13Speaker 1: Yeah, that's that's really hard to believe given their history,
- 21:16Speaker 1: isn't it right?
- 21:17Speaker 4: Right? You know it was Johnny Manzeau. I guess it
- 21:22Speaker 4: was about decade ago. He was he was on the
- 21:24Speaker 4: cover of Time and it said it's time to pay
- 21:26Speaker 4: the players, yes, and and we just absolutely ignored that.
- 21:30Speaker 4: So we've ended up with the wild West yep as
- 21:33Speaker 4: opposed to something where we say, hey, we don't know
- 21:35Speaker 4: if we love this, but this is where this is going,
- 21:38Speaker 4: and let's provide we can figure out ways that benefit
- 21:42Speaker 4: the institutions and the players as well, that provide some regulation.
- 21:46Speaker 4: So you know, these studies have come along, it would
- 21:49Speaker 4: have been interesting to see if we could have have
- 21:52Speaker 4: done one that.
- 21:54Speaker 1: I'm always interested in the racial aspects, which kind of
- 21:59Speaker 1: unfortunately reflected our society over the years. You mentioned players dying,
- 22:05Speaker 1: especially in the early nineteen hundreds when Teddy Roosevelt called
- 22:08Speaker 1: everybody to the White House, but in fact, African American
- 22:13Speaker 1: players died as a result of being targeted when they
- 22:18Speaker 1: were finally grudgingly allowed to play big time athletics. Correct.
- 22:25Speaker 4: Yes, absolutely, and those more sensational and absolutely tragic event
- 22:34Speaker 4: did happen, And I think a story underneath that is
- 22:37Speaker 4: even those who didn't. Yes, I'm thinking of John Westbrook,
- 22:41Speaker 4: who integrated Baylor, Jerry Lebias.
- 22:45Speaker 1: You know, I was so excited to see the information
- 22:50Speaker 1: on Jerry Lebias. He's a friend, He's been on this
- 22:53Speaker 1: show many times. He's a remarkable human being. Given everything
- 22:58Speaker 1: that he went through at some you was really I mean,
- 23:03Speaker 1: I call him the Jackie Robinson of college football. And
- 23:06Speaker 1: I don't think I'm wrong to do that.
- 23:08Speaker 4: No, I don't. And we have to remind ourselves that
- 23:12Speaker 4: these are eighteen nineteen year old yes who oftentimes our
- 23:17Speaker 4: senses we may say, oh, well, well now we've desegregated
- 23:25Speaker 4: or now we've integrated, and we're not thinking about the
- 23:27Speaker 4: one person who Hey, the vast majority of people may
- 23:31Speaker 4: treat them in a civil form or fashion, but if
- 23:34Speaker 4: you have incessant races who are dead said on making
- 23:39Speaker 4: you uncomfortable. These folks they really felt alone and they
- 23:43Speaker 4: really were trailblazers who we really need to highlight their accomplishments.
- 23:51Speaker 4: And we talk a little bit about this in the book,
- 23:52Speaker 4: that there's a difference between integration, which means, hey, we
- 23:57Speaker 4: have black players on the team versus or sorry, desegregation
- 24:03Speaker 4: where we where we just have black players, and integration
- 24:07Speaker 4: where they're part of the team, players feel part of
- 24:10Speaker 4: the university. And and it was a painful process to get.
- 24:15Speaker 1: There, no question. For for the sake of time, Eric
- 24:20Speaker 1: and I appreciate it. The book is called college Sports
- 24:23Speaker 1: a History. It is exactly that. It has tremendously researched
- 24:29Speaker 1: a history of how we got to where we are.
- 24:32Speaker 1: Having done this, now give me some thoughts, your thoughts
- 24:37Speaker 1: going forward with college athletics.
- 24:39Speaker 4: Eric, so it in the last couple of paragraphs, I say,
- 24:47Speaker 4: it's a dangerous thing for historians to try and serve
- 24:50Speaker 4: as futurists. But I think that you know, the n
- 24:55Speaker 4: cua A has abdicated a lot of their control over
- 24:59Speaker 4: the last decade, unintentionally.
- 25:01Speaker 1: Their powerless basically right.
- 25:03Speaker 4: Yes, right, And that the power conferences, particularly the SEC
- 25:09Speaker 4: and the Big Ten, are in the driver's seat. And
- 25:14Speaker 4: you know, and since you've read the book, you know
- 25:18Speaker 4: this goes well, and you probably knew before reading the book.
- 25:21Speaker 4: This goes back to the College Football Association. Yes, the
- 25:24Speaker 4: lawsuit in the eighties to allow conferences or individual schools.
- 25:29Speaker 4: I'm looking at you, Notre Dame, to be able to
- 25:32Speaker 4: keep their revenue. And so now that nothing happened in
- 25:37Speaker 4: this interim we were talking about for ten years, it's
- 25:40Speaker 4: going to be interesting to see how the conference has
- 25:43Speaker 4: worked us out. My personal opinion to keep college athletics
- 25:47Speaker 4: a national phenomenon that has regional flavor is I hope
- 25:54Speaker 4: we can end up with four power conferences rather than two.
- 25:58Speaker 4: If we have to, we have too, I believe that
- 26:01Speaker 4: will turn into one, and we will uh and that
- 26:06Speaker 4: one will lose a lot of the regional history that
- 26:10Speaker 4: we've had and the rivalries that exist, and they'll try
- 26:13Speaker 4: and figure that out, but it'll it'll exist in a
- 26:16Speaker 4: way that that I think that those will be diminished.
- 26:21Speaker 4: And I do hope that in the process there's a
- 26:24Speaker 4: discussion and honest discussion about college as an academic enterprise
- 26:28Speaker 4: and that we do utilize opportunities to provide educational opportunity
- 26:35Speaker 4: and encourage educational opportunities. You know, it's an interesting thing.
- 26:40Speaker 4: You know, for the last thirty years, people talk about, well,
- 26:43Speaker 4: college sports is professionalized. When we look back now in
- 26:47Speaker 4: our current landscape, we know that it wasn't purely amateur,
- 26:51Speaker 4: but it wasn't purely pro like we have now, which
- 26:54Speaker 4: is a free agency at the end of every season.
- 26:58Speaker 4: So I think there'll be some them and restrictions on that.
- 27:01Speaker 4: But I hope that there's a way to not turn
- 27:04Speaker 4: into one super conference, but I don't know if that
- 27:07Speaker 4: will be the case or not.
- 27:08Speaker 1: The book is called College Sports a History. Eric Moyan
- 27:12Speaker 1: and John Feelin wrote it. It's through JOHNS Hopkins University Press.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Eric really enjoyed the book, and thank you so much
- 27:21Speaker 1: again for the conversation.
- 27:23Speaker 4: Been a pleasure, Chip, Thanks for having me.
- 27:25Speaker 1: Eric Mouyan of College Sports. Is the book. It is
- 27:30Speaker 1: encyclopedic in size, but if you can wade through it, it
- 27:35Speaker 1: is an unbelievable history of the sport, and it's amazing
- 27:41Speaker 1: how things have not changed in one hundred and fifty years,
- 27:47Speaker 1: give or take. Producers closing up right now, speaking of

- 31:15Speaker 1: off to a star studded start boy say that four

- 31:27Speaker 1: down the red carpet last night at London's Royal Albert Hall,
- 31:34Speaker 1: hosted by the one and Only Coleman Domingo. I don't know,
- 31:39Speaker 1: I don't know.
- 31:40Speaker 9: Who that is amazing, I have no idea.
- 31:43Speaker 1: From pink panthers in custom Chophova, Louena to Sienna Miller's
- 31:52Speaker 1: angelic pregnancy announcement. During the arrivals, there was no shortage
- 31:59Speaker 1: of fashion, looks and glam. The fashion awards are organized
- 32:06Speaker 1: by the British Fashion Council. That's why I wasn't invited
- 32:11Speaker 1: and awarded a knock YAI with the model. Oh she's
- 32:15Speaker 1: good with the Model of the Year Award honors handed
- 32:22Speaker 1: out for Designer of the Year, British Women's women's Wear
- 32:27Speaker 1: Designer of the Year, British Men's Wear Designer of the Year.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Fashion Aside, the night also saw performances by Tims and Ray.
- 32:44Speaker 9: Made.
- 32:45Speaker 1: I hate that I miss this. I'd be poking people
- 32:52Speaker 1: in front of me on the shoulder. Now who is that?
- 32:55Speaker 10: Who is that?
- 32:58Speaker 1: You idiot? That's Tims and right.
- 33:01Speaker 5: Now?
- 33:02Speaker 1: Who who's Coleman Domingo?
- 33:05Speaker 4: Sir?
- 33:05Speaker 1: How did you get in here?
- 33:09Speaker 9: So this was the British, right you said?
- 33:12Speaker 1: Correct? Okay, so this was in London.
- 33:16Speaker 5: Maybe if we were British we would know these people.
- 33:18Speaker 1: Okay. So Apparently the Gotham Awards last night in New
- 33:24Speaker 1: York weren't concerned with the London Royal Fashion Awards.
- 33:29Speaker 9: So many awards.
- 33:31Speaker 1: Oh, it's awards season and we didn't win anything. Not yet.
- 33:40Speaker 9: Let's see maybe the heart of our viewers, listeners.
- 33:44Speaker 1: The highest profile win of the three hour event was
- 33:51Speaker 1: Paul Thomas Anderson's shaggy, pulse pounding masterpiece one battle after another.
- 34:01Speaker 1: Uh yeah, this is one of those that the Oscar
- 34:06Speaker 1: is gonna give awards to and nobody will ever see.
- 34:12Speaker 1: There's a lot of those.
- 34:14Speaker 9: It's a masterpiece.
- 34:15Speaker 1: Starry Oscar hopefuls Hamnet and Bugonia walk home empty handed,
- 34:25Speaker 1: while acclaimed international films My Father's Shadow and Sully Name's
- 34:31Speaker 1: Story claimed major hardware. Oh they're both so good. In
- 34:36Speaker 1: between courses of steak with asparagus and chocolate layer cake,
- 34:44Speaker 1: myriad A listeners took the stage for last ditch Awards
- 34:50Speaker 1: campaigning before the Critics Choice and Goldham Globe nominations are
- 34:56Speaker 1: announced next week. Julia Roberts, accepting a visionary tribute on
- 35:04Speaker 1: her with After the Hunt director Luca Guadanino jokingly cut
- 35:11Speaker 1: her speech short for a bathroom break, said Julia I
- 35:17Speaker 1: didn't realize how long this was gonna go on, and
- 35:20Speaker 1: I didn't regulate my water intake that Julia, She's such
- 35:27Speaker 1: a clown.
- 35:28Speaker 9: So real.
- 35:29Speaker 1: Adam Sandler meanwhile went on an uproarious, exploitive filled tangent
- 35:37Speaker 1: as he presented j Jelly filmmaker Noah Bombach with a
- 35:43Speaker 1: special director tribute, at one point calling out his former
- 35:48Speaker 1: agent he moved back to Omaha and sells weed. He's
- 35:54Speaker 1: bleeping useless, Sendler dead band. So here's the best I
- 36:02Speaker 1: can tell for these Gotham Awards. Okay, okay, the people
- 36:08Speaker 1: from Hollywood take the Red Eye East, dress up in
- 36:15Speaker 1: gowns and tuxes, eat good food, and then pat each
- 36:19Speaker 1: other on the back for three hours and go back
- 36:22Speaker 1: to Hollywood.
- 36:23Speaker 9: Do you think they're actually eating the good food? Well,
- 36:27Speaker 9: you were talking.
- 36:28Speaker 1: About that was if they If they are eating it,
- 36:31Speaker 1: they're throwing it up, So you know you're right, it's
- 36:36Speaker 1: a waste. It's a way.
- 36:37Speaker 9: I wasn't inating.
- 36:39Speaker 1: That, but oh well, I mean done, Come on, get
- 36:42Speaker 1: a grip, be real.
- 36:47Speaker 9: That's me, the realist.
- 36:48Speaker 1: Yes. So anyway, two big nights in London and New York.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I wasn't in either one of them.
- 36:56Speaker 5: I'm gonna be honest, though, I'm not that disappointed, you.
- 37:00Speaker 1: Know, neither neither one of those particular things. Yeah, but
- 37:04Speaker 1: what Yeah, I I can't be I can't be in
- 37:10Speaker 1: the same room with all those Hollywood phonies.
- 37:14Speaker 9: No, of course not. You would outshine them too, so
- 37:17Speaker 9: they would.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Well true, they wouldn't want me there, buys you. Yeah,
- 37:20Speaker 1: and plus plus I tell the truth. They don't like
- 37:23Speaker 1: that either.
- 37:25Speaker 9: Oh man, Well, let's shift gears.
- 37:27Speaker 5: Okay, I mean, I know we just talked about London,
- 37:29Speaker 5: so kinda. Prince Harry made his third trip to Canada
- 37:33Speaker 5: of the year on December first, So yesterday he appeared
- 37:37Speaker 5: at the Oria I don't know if that's actually pronounced
- 37:41Speaker 5: something or whatever, powerhouse conference in Toronto, Canada. The event
- 37:45Speaker 5: organized by our Ontario.
- 37:48Speaker 9: Oh my goodness, I know how to say it, Ontario Ontario.
- 37:53Speaker 1: There you go.
- 37:57Speaker 5: Sorry if I offended any Canadians with that, all right,
- 38:00Speaker 5: we feel the same way when you say brazos instead
- 38:02Speaker 5: of brasses.
- 38:03Speaker 1: Take off, take off.
- 38:07Speaker 5: Yeah, Real estate Association. Oh so that's what the O
- 38:10Speaker 5: r e A stands for. It's tough to self as
- 38:13Speaker 5: Canada's best political affairs conference, and he was slated to speak.
- 38:18Speaker 1: How much do you think Prince Harry gets per speech?
- 38:21Speaker 9: You know what, I don't know.
- 38:23Speaker 5: You know, they gotta they gotta make something because Megan
- 38:26Speaker 5: Markle's weird jams aren't selling on her website.
- 38:29Speaker 1: I'm going to say one hundred, one hundred k. No,
- 38:32Speaker 1: one hundred dollars.
- 38:39Speaker 9: You know, you've got to do a lot of speech,
- 38:42Speaker 9: one hundred K.
- 38:44Speaker 1: Megan's like, are you leaving again? Are you going to
- 38:47Speaker 1: Canada again? Princes like, hey, they're the only country that'll
- 38:51Speaker 1: pay me one hundred bucks to come up here, So yes,
- 38:53Speaker 1: I'm going.
- 38:54Speaker 9: Don't make your jams, Meghan. Yah. I gotta work, Yeah,
- 38:58Speaker 9: I gotta.
- 38:59Speaker 1: I gotta provide for these kids.
- 39:02Speaker 5: It was according to the schedule, it was due to
- 39:06Speaker 5: appear at an exclusive conversation with Prince Harry on the
- 39:11Speaker 5: last session of the day at the Hilton Toronto.
- 39:14Speaker 1: So you get to pay extra to sit around with Harry.
- 39:18Speaker 11: I guess.
- 39:19Speaker 5: There were no photos of princepub released, but O r
- 39:25Speaker 5: EA's Instagram story included a video of attendees discussing their
- 39:28Speaker 5: anticipation for his session.
- 39:30Speaker 9: In a photo dubbed built last pick before Prince Harry.
- 39:36Speaker 1: So Harold apparently has a no photo clause right in
- 39:42Speaker 1: his contract.
- 39:43Speaker 5: Do you think he's critical of photos of himself and
- 39:46Speaker 5: that's why no one's getting, you know, get the wrong
- 39:50Speaker 5: angle of me.
- 39:51Speaker 1: The last time I remember, he was photographed in a
- 39:55Speaker 1: suite in Las Vegas with a bunch of hookers and
- 39:58Speaker 1: blow and uh, that didn't do too well for him.
- 40:03Speaker 1: So maybe maybe that has something to.
- 40:06Speaker 9: Do with his picture. I'm picturing his kids randomly seeing
- 40:09Speaker 9: that photo.
- 40:11Speaker 5: What is this?
- 40:13Speaker 1: Somebody photoshop my kids?
- 40:15Speaker 9: Let's move on, thank thank god.
- 40:18Speaker 1: Okay, so listen to this. Apparently after this Gotham Award
- 40:24Speaker 1: last night, Hugh Jackman named Kate Hudson went to a
- 40:30Speaker 1: New York City pob to do a little singing old
- 40:37Speaker 1: mates pob Hugh and Kate belting out Sweet Caroline like
- 40:42Speaker 1: karaoke pros, leading the tipsy crowd in a sing along,
- 40:48Speaker 1: fresh off accepting the Gotham Awards first ever musical tribute
- 40:55Speaker 1: for their flick song Sung Blue. In other words, the
- 40:59Speaker 1: Gotham Awards made up a new award to get Hugh
- 41:03Speaker 1: and Kate to come to their party, going, Oh, this
- 41:07Speaker 1: movie you guys have made is the best we've ever seen. Now,
- 41:10Speaker 1: we've never given an award like this before, but if
- 41:13Speaker 1: y'all come, we'll give you an award. So apparently that's
- 41:16Speaker 1: what happens.
- 41:17Speaker 9: We'll give you something. Uh.
- 41:19Speaker 1: Hugh and Kate born for the movie. They huddled up
- 41:23Speaker 1: with Palells, belting their hearts out and wrapping the night
- 41:27Speaker 1: in celebration song sung Blue, which I'm actually going to
- 41:32Speaker 1: try to go see this time, seriously follows two down
- 41:37Speaker 1: on their luck performers in a Neil Diamond tribute Bad,
- 41:42Speaker 1: proving it's never too late to chase love and a dream.
- 41:48Speaker 1: It comes out on Christmas Day.
- 41:52Speaker 9: Look, I've heard of cover bands before, yes, but imagine
- 41:56Speaker 9: being a Neil Diamond.
- 41:59Speaker 1: Not only a Neil Diamond cover band, but an unsuccessful
- 42:02Speaker 1: Neil Diamond cover band. I mean, what bar? What more
- 42:08Speaker 1: could you want in a movie than that?
- 42:12Speaker 9: That baseline right there? How does Neil Diamond feel about that?
- 42:16Speaker 1: I mean, actually I saw a clip. Ok, Look, these
- 42:20Speaker 1: guys have been everywhere. I'm skeptical that this movie is
- 42:25Speaker 1: very good because, oh my gosh, are they promoting this movie?
- 42:31Speaker 1: They have been everywhere promoting this movie and.
- 42:37Speaker 9: Hard.
- 42:37Speaker 1: Kate had a little clip of going to actually visit Neil.
- 42:41Speaker 9: So that's nice.
- 42:44Speaker 1: She didn't she didn't say, you know what Neil told
- 42:49Speaker 1: him he thought about the movie, or you know, not
- 42:54Speaker 1: to make light. But but Neil's getting a little old
- 42:57Speaker 1: and had to get off the road because he has
- 43:01Speaker 1: I think Parkinson's maybe, I'm not sure. Yeah, yeah, yeah
- 43:06Speaker 1: he was. He was diagnosed, I don't know, within the
- 43:10Speaker 1: last six to eight months, I think, so he had
- 43:13Speaker 1: to retire.
- 43:14Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, wow, what she give the best Neil, good job, Neil,
- 43:21Speaker 5: Miley Cyrus.
- 43:25Speaker 9: We really don't even talk about her that much, but
- 43:28Speaker 9: apparently there are some there's some.
- 43:32Speaker 5: Fans who think she might be engaged way Max Mirando.
- 43:36Speaker 1: I don't know why she's engaged Max Miranda.
- 43:40Speaker 5: Maybe apparently the Wrecking Ball hit maker had fans chatty
- 43:44Speaker 5: after arriving with the Avatar Fire and Nash World premiere.
- 43:48Speaker 9: In Los Angeles.
- 43:49Speaker 1: Well, there's lots of.
- 43:52Speaker 9: Yeah, she had a diamond ring on that finger.
- 43:55Speaker 5: This sparkler set in a thick gold band couldn't be
- 43:59Speaker 5: missed as she rested her hand on the musician's chest
- 44:03Speaker 5: as they posed on the red carpet. Fans, of course,
- 44:07Speaker 5: are sharing the photo they believe that Max's father shared online,
- 44:10Speaker 5: offering his congratulations to the longtime couple in that ring
- 44:15Speaker 5: seen there as well.
- 44:17Speaker 1: Nice. Well, I wish the best for those lovely kids.
- 44:22Speaker 1: I don't see how that couldn't work out. Well, I
- 44:27Speaker 1: didn't know this was a thing anymore because I didn't
- 44:30Speaker 1: know Oprah was on TV anymore, or people watched Oprah
- 44:34Speaker 1: cared about what Oprah said anymore. I mean, I never
- 44:41Speaker 1: see her anymore.
- 44:42Speaker 9: What an intro.
- 44:44Speaker 1: Okay, people know how I feel about Oprah, but she
- 44:51Speaker 1: did put out her favorite things for Christmas. Give us some, Okay,
