- 0:00Let me give you one example of why Mr. Musil is the consummate
- 0:05sportsman. And back in the early 70s I when
- 0:08I owned Bill Rose Tavern, Billy Rose over in Alton, the Anheuser
- 0:13Busch distributor there, Bob Dixon.
- 0:16The Dixon family were good friends of mine, of course,
- 0:18because I sold a lot of their product.
- 0:21And so back in those days, they had a businessman special 12:15
- 0:26on Wednesday, which I see a lot of the games this year are
- 0:29scheduled at 12:15. So Bob calls me.
- 0:33So listen, he said be out here next Wednesday.
- 0:35We're going to go to the ball game.
- 0:36They're going to bring Mr. Bush's bus over and we're going
- 0:39to ride over on that. So those were in my drinking
- 0:42days. I haven't had a drink in about
- 0:4425 years, but I'll sell you all night long.
- 0:48So I got out to the warehouse about 9:00 and we started
- 0:52drinking Mr. Bush's finest little Michelob.
- 0:55And so here comes the bus and big Prevos bus, private bus, of
- 1:00course. And Bill, across from the
- 1:02brewery, was on it. And two guys, one guy driving,
- 1:05they had a horn. You hit the horn and go and he's
- 1:09serving beer and peanuts and all that.
- 1:12So Cincinnati's playing that day.
- 1:14And for you kids, you won't remember this, but they had a
- 1:17guy the name of Don Gullett who can throw the ball almost as
- 1:22hard and as fast as Bob Gibson. And so they were pitching gullet
- 1:27that day against Gibson and we had a course.
- 1:29Those were in the days. You have to remember fans, the
- 1:33Cardinals used to draw 1213 thousand people back in the 70s
- 1:37before Whitey. And so I'm sitting right behind
- 1:41the home plate and the game starting and and Bill Crossman
- 1:46Brewery said let's talk to Mr. Bushes Private box, the Red Bird
- 1:49roost. I said I want to watch the game.
- 1:51He said No problem, You can sit outside up there and watch it.
- 1:55So we go up and I get a hamburger and a beer and I'm
- 1:57sitting out there and nobody else out there but me and Gibson
- 2:02and and Gullet. And I said to myself, man, these
- 2:05guys are throwing some heat today.
- 2:07And the voice behind me says, yeah, they're they're on it.
- 2:11And I and I recognize the voice and it's the man.
- 2:14It's Mr. Mitchell. And I turn around and he stuck
- 2:17his hand out and he said I'm standing.
- 2:19I said I know who you are. And he said what are you doing
- 2:23here in Mr. Bush's box? And I said, well, I rode over on
- 2:27his bus and what I didn't tell you guys was when I was riding
- 2:31over on his bus there was a red phone.
- 2:33Now this was before cell phones or what have you.
- 2:36This was in the 70s, so I asked Bill Cross, I said what is that
- 2:40phone? He said.
- 2:41That's Mr. Bushes private phone. You calling place in the world?
- 2:45I said, can I call my dad? He's a hell of a Cardinal fan.
- 2:47He said sure. So it's about 11:30 and Dad
- 2:51happened to be in the house at that time and I got him on the
- 2:54phone and he says, what are you doing?
- 2:56I said I'm on August buses, Bush on the way to the ballpark.
- 2:59He said, you mean you're on August bushes?
- 3:01I said, yeah, I've had a couple of beers.
- 3:03He said be careful. And so we talked.
- 3:05And so to bring it back to speed, we go up to the Red Bird
- 3:09Roost. I get the ball and I go out and
- 3:11I'm sitting down and Mr. Mutual shakes my hand.
- 3:14He said what are you doing here? I said, well I wrote over on Mr.
- 3:17Bushes bus and he said, well that's quite a ride And and I
- 3:20said it sure was. And I said I even called my dad
- 3:22and he said, oh, he said see a Cardinal fan.
- 3:25I said the biggest man and so no more was said.
- 3:28And about the 2nd inning, it's about 1:00 and I get a tap on
- 3:33his shoulder and I turn around. It's Mr. Musil.
- 3:35He said let's go call your dad. I said, Mr. Musil, I can't, I
- 3:39don't want to. He said don't worry, there's a
- 3:42pay phone right outside. He said let's go call him.
- 3:45So we get out there and I call and I get Dad on the phone.
- 3:49He's still on a pay phone. You know, I put the change.
- 3:51I thought maybe the man might loan me the money but anyway, I
- 3:56I put it in and so he says what's his name?
- 3:59And I says Charles and he gets on the phone.
- 4:02He says, hey, Charlie said I'm sorry.
- 4:05I get a little emotional. He say, Charlie said this is
- 4:09Stan the man. We're here at the ball game.
- 4:11I'm with Billy. I just want to tell you hi.
- 4:14He talked to my dad for two or three minutes.
- 4:17Seemed like an eternity to me. Got off the phone and I said,
- 4:21Mr. Musil I can't thank you enough.
- 4:23And he said he said don't. No problem.
- 4:26They told that story at my dad's funeral.
- 4:28So when Mr. Musil died, I went to his funeral.
