- 0:00Speaker 1: Russia fired more than six hundred drones and missiles it
- 0:02Speaker 1: targets across Ukraine earlier this morning, in one of the
- 0:05Speaker 1: largest aerial barrches since the start of the war. The
- 0:17Speaker 1: attacks reportedly killed at least four people in Kiev and
- 0:19Speaker 1: wounded dozens more. Ukraine's air force said it's air defense
- 0:23Speaker 1: shot down or deflected dozens of missiles and most of
- 0:25Speaker 1: the drones. Were joined now by Jill Doherty, scene and
- 0:28Speaker 1: contributor and former Scene in Moscow bureau chief and adjunct
- 0:31Speaker 1: professor at Georgetown University. Jill, thank you so much for
- 0:35Speaker 1: being here with us. We appreciate it. It's yet another
- 0:39Speaker 1: Sunday where we say Russia has done x thing that
- 0:42Speaker 1: is the worst or the first that they have done.
- 0:45Speaker 1: After over three years of war. Where is Russia right
- 0:49Speaker 1: now and what are they hoping to accomplish here?
- 0:53Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean that really is a question, because you're right,
- 0:56Speaker 2: I was thinking the very same thing. You know, every
- 0:59Speaker 2: day we're saying it's the worse since the beginning. I think,
- 1:03Speaker 2: on the one hand, you know, their strategy has a
- 1:05Speaker 2: lot of parts to it, so dealing directly with the war,
- 1:09Speaker 2: the kinetic part of the war against Ukraine. They are
- 1:13Speaker 2: trying to exhaust, they're trying to terrorize, They're trying to
- 1:17Speaker 2: make Ukrainians simply give up and think that it's too much.
- 1:21Speaker 2: So this constant bombardment. They would deny, of course as usual,
- 1:26Speaker 2: that they are bombing civilian targets, but obviously civilians are
- 1:30Speaker 2: dying and they are being bombed. You know. Then I
- 1:33Speaker 2: think there's another part to this, which is they you
- 1:37Speaker 2: have and I know we'll probably talk about it, but
- 1:40Speaker 2: you have the drones and the nig fighters that have
- 1:43Speaker 2: gone into the West. That's another way of kind of
- 1:47Speaker 2: you know, fighting the war with lack of clarity, you know,
- 1:52Speaker 2: is it an attack is it not? And then you
- 1:55Speaker 2: have the role of China and then you have the
- 1:57Speaker 2: role of the United States and Russia. So they're pressing
- 2:01Speaker 2: on all of those different parts in different ways.
- 2:05Speaker 1: Okay, And so let's and in the midst of all
- 2:08Speaker 1: of that, because I do want to touch on those
- 2:10Speaker 1: other issues. You said, but for the first time we
- 2:13Speaker 1: heard President Trump say this week he thinks Ukraine can
- 2:16Speaker 1: win this war. How do you think that landed with
- 2:20Speaker 1: President Putin?
- 2:22Speaker 2: Well, I think maybe the Russians are as confused as
- 2:26Speaker 2: everyone else I mean that was one to eighty. There
- 2:29Speaker 2: was a lot of confusion here in the United States
- 2:32Speaker 2: and among our allies. And it could be that the
- 2:35Speaker 2: Russians are confused by it too. So they're continuing with,
- 2:39Speaker 2: you know, again attacking Ukraine, but they're doing other things
- 2:44Speaker 2: to trying to try to figure out exactly what Trump means.
- 2:48Speaker 2: And to me, that kind of boils down to they're
- 2:52Speaker 2: testing the West, and then they're also testing how the
- 2:55Speaker 2: United States is working or not working with its allies.
- 3:01Speaker 1: And and and to that end, this testing of NATO.
- 3:05Speaker 1: These NATO countries that you mentioned that have reported some
- 3:08Speaker 1: drones flying into their airspace, they're blaming Russia. And I
- 3:13Speaker 1: know you and I talked before, and you said, this
- 3:15Speaker 1: is like they like to leave things kind of nebulous
- 3:17Speaker 1: where they did they really do it on purpose? What
- 3:20Speaker 1: is their true intention? What this? But the fact is
- 3:23Speaker 1: these things continue to happen. Do you think at this
- 3:26Speaker 1: point it's looking more like a test for the West
- 3:29Speaker 1: and testing NATO or is it something else?
- 3:32Speaker 2: Well, I think it's a number of different things. It
- 3:35Speaker 2: is a test. I mean when they come close, like
- 3:38Speaker 2: let's say, there were two different types of things. There
- 3:40Speaker 2: were the drones that came into Poland they also were
- 3:45Speaker 2: close to Romania. They then they have the MiGs, you know,
- 3:49Speaker 2: the fighter jets up in Estonia. So they're coming in
- 3:53Speaker 2: in different ways, and you know, in an immediate fashion.
- 3:56Speaker 2: Let's see how the you know, the West reacts, how
- 3:59Speaker 2: do NATO react, how many minutes does it take, what
- 4:02Speaker 2: do they do? And then we have this big debate
- 4:05Speaker 2: about should they be shot down should they not? And
- 4:08Speaker 2: here's where you have those surprising comments by President Trump. Yes,
- 4:13Speaker 2: he said the Allies should shoot them down, and then
- 4:17Speaker 2: he also said Ukraine can win back the territory that
- 4:22Speaker 2: it's lost, and maybe even more so. You know, the
- 4:25Speaker 2: Russians look at that. I don't think they quite believe
- 4:29Speaker 2: or they're on board with everything that he's saying. And
- 4:32Speaker 2: if you look at the very carefully at what President
- 4:35Speaker 2: Trump said at the end of all of that last week,
- 4:38Speaker 2: he said, good luck to both sides. So you know,
- 4:42Speaker 2: what are we to understand by that? So I would
- 4:45Speaker 2: say Russians, you know, exploit what they can, test where
- 4:49Speaker 2: they can, and really importantly it's testing. What does the
- 4:53Speaker 2: United States do when the allies, when NATO allies are tested.
- 5:00Speaker 2: That to me is the question the Russians who are saying,
- 5:02Speaker 2: will the US come to the aid of its native allowies?
- 5:06Speaker 1: Right? Is that is the big question here all right?
- 5:09Speaker 1: Jill Doherty, good to see you, Thank you so much.
