- Quantinuum says its Helios quantum computer reduced logical errors by a factor of 12 with each step up in code distance. The bigger claim is that Sandia National Laboratories says a scaled-up version could reach fault-tolerant performance at a feasible size, putting the company’s Apollo roadmap in sharper focus. But the result is a measurement on tested code distances, not a complete fault-tolerant computation. What does the evidence establish, and how much does it tell us about the machine Quantinuum wants to build? We’ll separate the measured result from the engineering forecast. Welcome back to Quickly Quantum, your daily brief on the quantum frontier. It's Wednesday, October 21, 2026. Let's get into it. Nvidia says it simulated a 104-qubit quantum computer that can correct its own errors, using JUPITER, the supercomputer at Germany’s Jülich Supercomputing Centre, according to The Next Web. The distinction matters: the work ran on conventional computers, not a quantum processor, so this is a way to test a design before building the hardware, not a new quantum machine you can run calculations on. The team tested magic state cultivation, a technique for creating special quantum states needed for certain calculations. Nvidia says its method uses 90% fewer qubits than earlier approaches, and the simulation accounted for noise that affects real quantum hardware. That builds on work by researchers at Jülich, who simulated 50 qubits on JUPITER in November 2025 under ideal, noise-free conditions. For this latest test, the team used Nvidia GH200 chips across 8,192 GPUs. Nvidia first developed and tested the model on a smaller system at its own quantum lab, cutting the work from weeks to days, the company said. Nvidia calls this the largest full simulation of such a machine so far, and the Next Web reports that the announcement came as CEO Jensen Huang prepared to deliver his keynote at Nvidia’s GTC conference in Berlin on Wednesday. Huang said, “Useful quantum computing will require fantastically complex, fault-tolerant systems.” Kristel Michielsen, director of the Jülich Supercomputing Centre, said, “Europe’s investment in JUPITER gives researchers the ability to investigate questions that were previously beyond reach.” I think the strongest part is the noise-aware simulation: it makes the design exercise more relevant, while the hardware still has to do the actual computing. From a simulated fault-tolerant design to feedback on a live processor, Rutgers and IBM demonstrated repeated measurement and reset across up to 100 qubits, The Quantum Insider reports. In plain terms, the computer checked what was happening while it ran, then reset parts of itself to steer chaotic behavior. The experiment used a 156-qubit IBM Quantum Heron processor for nearly 5,000 two-qubit operations and nearly 5,000 measurements and resets while the system continued running. The researchers observed a sharp transition from chaos to control when resets outpaced scrambling, confirming theoretical predictions. The study was published in Nature Physics, according to The Quantum Insider. The result is a capability considered essential for future fault-tolerant computers, machines designed to keep computing correctly despite errors in their individual qubits. It is not error correction itself. Professor Jedediah Pixley, one of the study’s senior authors, said, “To build a fault-tolerant quantum computer, we have to make these checks and corrections not just once or twice, but a huge number of times during a calculation.” And Maika Takita, a senior author and principal research scientist for quantum error correction and dynamic circuits experiments at IBM, said, “The challenge was not simply to measure a qubit, but to do it repeatedly while the rest of the processor continued to operate.” That’s the useful signal here: repeated control while the processor keeps running. Switching from laboratory control to government communications, Arqit is investing in Sirius Computer to bolster quantum-safe communications for defense organizations and critical infrastructure, Quantum Zeitgeist reports. The investment builds on an existing partnership and will accelerate development of Crux, a software platform designed to run on commercial devices and integrate with existing networks. Quantum-safe here means designed to protect communications against future threats from quantum computing. Crux combines Sirius’s secure networking technology with Arqit’s Sovereign Key Platform and NetworkSecure adaptors, and the companies say it can extend secure communications without replacing current systems. The article says applications include control systems for Uncrewed Autonomous Vehicles. The companies have also been selected by NATO as part of a consortium to provide secure networking services, according to Quantum Zeitgeist. Arqit’s Paul Feenan, General Manager for Defence & Government, said security needs to support that cooperation without adding complexity for personnel on the ground. Sirius says the partnership will also pursue opportunities with the UK Ministry of Defence and the US Department of Defense. The investment size wasn’t stated. I think the consequential point is the intended route into existing networks; the NATO selection is a claimed use case, not evidence here of a specific contract value. Meanwhile, Postquant Labs has launched its Quip Virtual Machine on the Aglais testnet, The Quantum Insider reports. A testnet is a trial network, and the company describes Quip as a shared programming and execution environment for quantum and classical computing systems. The platform supports a constraint-based programming language, a compute-credit pricing model, and a system for checking results. Researchers at Monash University, the University of Notre Dame, and Purdue University are assessing it, while SiC Systems is exploring possible industrial optimization uses. At a demonstration at Quantum.Tech World, Quip ran 1,930 portfolio-optimization comparisons between quantum and classical solvers. Results within 0.5% of each other counted as ties; the quantum solver matched or beat the classical solver in every race, and in every race where the results differed by more than 0.5%, it produced the better portfolio, by a median of 2.56%. Both solvers typically returned results in 0.1 to 0.3 seconds. Those are results under the company’s stated evaluation criteria, as reported by The Quantum Insider. There’s a real usability problem behind the pitch: different hardware platforms don’t share one common program representation or pricing model. Colton Dillion, CEO and co-founder of Postquant Labs, said the aim is to make quantum programming easier for newcomers and to unify pricing and hybrid computing across available machines. That’s an ambitious direction for a testnet launch. CAPTAIN 🦇 🔊, posting as @Real_TShelby on X, wrote, “Quantum computing is moving beyond the lab, and @QuipNetwork just made a move worth watching.” That’s enthusiasm for the launch; the evidence in today’s story is a testnet and a demonstration, not proof that the platform delivers an advantage across hardware. A smaller, more tangible step into the real world: Quantum Zeitgeist reported that WISeSat is testing quantum-resistant VaultIC hardware on its newly launched FOSSASAT-2E27 satellite. The satellite is a 6U platform, now in orbit following launch aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 Bandwagon-5 mission. WISeSat says it and FOSSA intend to pursue more systematic in-orbit tests across up to six selected satellite missions. The collaboration is expected to support progressive validation of VaultIC secure elements and, subject to technical readiness and integration, the QS7001 secure element. An orbital test gives the companies a place to evaluate the hardware under space operating conditions; it doesn’t by itself establish quantum resistance. That's the rest of today's quantum news. Now, the story I want to slow down for. Quantinuum’s result is about whether adding more physical qubits to an error-correcting code makes its logical qubit more reliable. A logical qubit is information encoded across multiple physical qubits, so errors in the individual parts can be detected and corrected. Tech Times reports that Quantinuum’s Helios trapped-ion computer achieved below-threshold color code operation. In everyday language, below threshold means that adding resources to the code reduces the logical error rate rather than making it worse. Quantinuum’s paper reports Λ = 12 (−2/+3) per step, where lambda measures the error suppression as code distance increases. At the highest code distance tested — distance 7, requiring 73 physical qubits per logical qubit — the logical error rate hit five errors per million operations (5 × 10⁻⁶ per syndrome extraction cycle), according to Tech Times. A syndrome extraction cycle is a round of checks used to detect errors without directly reading out the encoded information. The article describes this as the lowest published logical error rate across quantum hardware platforms. The test covered code distances 3, 5, and 7, requiring 13, 37, and 73 physical qubits per logical qubit, respectively. The reported suppression factor means that for each step up in code distance, the logical error rate falls by a factor of roughly 12. Those details are the measured core of the claim. Tech Times reports that Sandia National Laboratories independently validated the result and that a scaled-up version of the architecture could reach fault-tolerant performance at a physically feasible qubit count. Robin Blume-Kohout, co-director of Sandia National Laboratories’ Quantum Performance Laboratory, called a system scaled up from Helios plausible at a “feasible size” — meaning fewer than one million physical qubits. The article says the result directly determines how many physical qubits Apollo will need. Apollo is Quantinuum’s fault-tolerant roadmap, and Tech Times says the company is targeting 2029. This story is based on Tech Times. The distinction matters because the measured result is on Helios at tested distances, while Apollo is the scaled-up system those measurements are meant to inform. Still, a strong error-suppression measurement doesn’t itself run a fault-tolerant computation. The distance-7 result is measured performance on a particular code and hardware system; the leap to a larger architecture depends on whether the same behavior carries through scaling. Tech Times reported that Helix set a world-record logical error rate of 4.6 × 10⁻⁵ per logical qubit per cycle and Helix used only 10 physical qubits per logical qubit. The color code uses more physical resources at the tested distances, while Tech Times says it reaches a logical error rate roughly ten times lower than Helix achieved. Both codes demonstrated below-threshold behavior on the same commercial system. What does Sandia’s assessment add? It gives the result an engineering interpretation: Blume-Kohout said fault-tolerant computation at a feasible size was plausible for a system scaled up from Helios. That’s meaningful support for the route from measurement to architecture, but feasibility is an assessment, not a completed Apollo machine. Tech Times says trapped-ion systems implement the color code’s Clifford gates transversally, meaning those operations can be performed across the logical qubits without extra helper qubits. The article describes that as a structural feature of ion-trap all-to-all connectivity. That helps explain why this result is tied to the architecture tested; the reported behavior cannot simply be assumed to transfer to hardware with a different layout. I’m glad to see a real error-correction milestone measured on commercial hardware. The result strengthens the case that Helios is doing useful work toward fault tolerance, and the factor-of-12 suppression is a striking measured signal. I’m less certain about the distance from that signal to Apollo: the available evidence here is a limited set of tested code distances and a feasibility assessment, rather than a demonstration of the scaled system. My read is that this meaningfully tightens the engineering case for Quantinuum’s roadmap, while leaving execution at scale as the central test. The error-suppression curve matters because it bears on how many physical qubits Apollo will need; I’d revise that view if the measured scaling failed to hold as the architecture grows. Time for the Hype Check. I’d give this an 8 out of 10 for substance: the strongest point against that score is that Helios has not demonstrated a full fault-tolerant computation, but the measured below-threshold operation and Sandia’s feasibility assessment justify taking the result seriously. The stake is Apollo’s physical-qubit requirement, and today’s result gives that estimate a measured foundation; Quantinuum’s stated 2029 target is the next concrete marker for whether the roadmap can turn that foundation into a fault-tolerant system.
