- Lucas: Hey Luna, welcome back to Learn Dutch with Fexingo! We're at episode 30, can you believe it? Luna: I know! Thirty episodes already. I still remember struggling with 'goedemorgen' back in episode 11. Lucas: And now you're practically a pro. Today we're going to learn something super useful: directions in Dutch. Luna: Oh, I need this. I always get lost in Dutch cities. I still rely on my phone. Lucas: Well after this episode, you can ask a local. We'll start with three key words: links, rechts, and rechtdoor. Luna: Links, rechts, rechtdoor. I think I know links and rechts from the bus episode? 'Links' is left, right? Lucas: Exactly! 'Links' means left, 'rechts' means right. And 'rechtdoor' means straight ahead. Let's practice each one. Lucas: Say after me: links. Luna: Links. Lucas: Perfect. Now: rechts. Luna: Rechts. Lucas: Good. And: rechtdoor. Luna: Rechtdoor. That one's a mouthful. Rechtdoor. Lucas: You've got it. Now let's put them into simple commands. 'Ga linksaf' means 'turn left'. 'Ga rechtsaf' means 'turn right'. And 'Ga rechtdoor' means 'go straight ahead'. Luna: Ga linksaf, ga rechtsaf, ga rechtdoor. So 'af' is like 'off'? Turn off? Lucas: Exactly! 'Linksaf' is literally 'left off'. It's a common direction word in Dutch. Let's say them together: Ga linksaf. Luna: Ga linksaf. Lucas: Ga rechtsaf. Luna: Ga rechtsaf. Lucas: Ga rechtdoor. Luna: Ga rechtdoor. Okay, I think I've got these. Lucas: Let's imagine a little scene. You're in Amsterdam, and you want to go to the station. You ask someone: 'Waar is het station?' They say: 'Ga rechtdoor, dan linksaf.' Luna: So 'Ga rechtdoor, dan linksaf' means 'Go straight ahead, then turn left'? Lucas: Yes! 'Dan' means 'then'. Perfect. Now you try: you're lost, I'm the local. Ask me where the station is. Luna: Waar is het station? Lucas: Ga rechtdoor, dan rechtsaf. Luna: So I go straight ahead, then turn right. Got it. Ga rechtdoor, dan rechtsaf. Lucas: Excellent! Now let's do a quick drill. I'll say a direction in English, you say it in Dutch. 'Turn left.' Luna: Ga linksaf. Lucas: 'Go straight ahead.' Luna: Ga rechtdoor. Lucas: 'Turn right.' Luna: Ga rechtsaf. Lucas: You're a natural. Now let's use just the words: links, rechts, rechtdoor. I'll point to a direction, you say the word. Luna: Okay, go ahead. Lucas: Points left. Luna: Links. Lucas: Points right. Luna: Rechts. Lucas: Points straight ahead. Luna: Rechtdoor. Lucas: Perfect! Now, these words are also useful when giving directions by bus or tram. Remember from episode 29: 'Gaat deze tram naar het station?' You can now answer with directions. Luna: Oh, like 'Ja, neem de tram, ga rechtdoor en dan linksaf'? Lucas: Yes! 'Neem de tram, ga rechtdoor en dan linksaf.' That's a whole sentence. 'Neem' means 'take'. So 'Neem de tram, ga rechtdoor en dan linksaf.' Luna: Neem de tram, ga rechtdoor en dan linksaf. I can totally say that now. Lucas: Let's do one more full practice. I'll give you a direction in Dutch, you tell me what it means in English. 'Ga linksaf.' Luna: Turn left. Lucas: 'Ga rechtdoor.' Luna: Go straight ahead. Lucas: 'Ga rechtsaf.' Luna: Turn right. Lucas: Now reverse: I say English, you Dutch. 'Turn right.' Luna: Ga rechtsaf. Lucas: 'Go straight ahead.' Luna: Ga rechtdoor. Lucas: 'Turn left.' Luna: Ga linksaf. Lucas: You did it, Luna. That's all for today. Let's recap: links, rechts, rechtdoor. Ga linksaf, ga rechtsaf, ga rechtdoor. Luna: Links, rechts, rechtdoor. Ga linksaf, ga rechtsaf, ga rechtdoor. Thanks Lucas! Now I can navigate without my phone. Lucas: That's the goal. Practice these phrases until next time. This has been Learn Dutch with Fexingo—see you in episode 31! Luna: Doei! Lucas: Doei!
