- 0:18Don Armstrong: Jeff has his car culture featured this week on white letter tires.
- 0:23Don Armstrong: Remember those?
- 0:24Don Armstrong: And Mr.
- 0:25Don Armstrong: Mars has hidden speakeasies in the Houston area.
- 0:32Don Armstrong: I think if they start there and they trickle over our stuff down there.
- 0:37Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 0:38Don Armstrong: Howdy, along with Mike Out of this world Mars, we always need more Jeff Speacon.
- 0:42Don Armstrong: Chief Engineer David Ainsley will be joining us for real next week when we venture up to Granberry for our remote broadcast up there.
- 0:50Don Armstrong: And I'm Don Armstrong.
- 0:52Don Armstrong: Thank you very much for taking your time this morning to be with us.
- 0:56Don Armstrong: So let's go right out to Mr.
- 0:58Don Armstrong: John Vincent.
- 1:01Don Armstrong: And he is with U.S.
- 1:02Don Armstrong: News World Report.
- 1:04Don Armstrong: And hey John, it's great to see you again.
- 1:06Don Armstrong: How have you been?
- 1:07SPEAKER_03: Great to see you guys.
- 1:08SPEAKER_03: It's been a minute since I've been on.
- 1:09Don Armstrong: It has been a minute, not our problem.
- 1:13Don Armstrong: You're always welcome here, and all you gotta do is give us a buzz.
- 1:22Don Armstrong: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:23Don Armstrong: Because it should be at least a once-a-month or don't you think?
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: Sure.
- 1:27Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's what we think.
- 1:28Don Armstrong: So they have just released the 2026 Adventure Vehicle Awards.
- 1:34Don Armstrong: Now that's something different over there at U.S.
- 1:37Don Armstrong: News and World Report.
- 1:38Don Armstrong: So we're going to talk about best vehicles for camping, best vehicles for road trips, best SUVs for off-roading, and best trucks for off-roading.
- 1:48Don Armstrong: I don't know where you want to start, but any of those are good for me.
- 1:51SPEAKER_03: Well, why don't we just start with the best SUVs for off-roading?
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: All right, let's do that.
- 1:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, this is a very long list of cars, but out of this whole group, there's one big winner, and it's GMC.
- 2:03SPEAKER_03: But we'll talk about that a little bit more as we go on here.
- 2:06SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:07SPEAKER_03: Um, so best subcompact SUV for off-roading, Ford Bronco Sport.
- 2:12SPEAKER_03: Um, Ford Bronco Sport's a vehicle that's built off the escape, but is a much better escape than the escape.
- 2:19Don Armstrong: And let me and let me just add to this: you know, since that car came out, we thought ah, it's just a makeover.
- 2:27Don Armstrong: No, it's not.
- 2:28Don Armstrong: It is really a nice vehicle, and I have always said that from the day that it hit the ground.
- 2:34SPEAKER_03: It's pretty capable of getting it in its Sasquatch trim.
- 2:38SPEAKER_03: Yes, and I've had one of those and loved it.
- 2:42SPEAKER_03: So best compact SUV for off-roading.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Of course, this has to be on the list Jeep Wrangler.
- 2:48Don Armstrong: Yeah, I see I don't even put it in a class like a compact or subcompact.
- 2:53Don Armstrong: I just put it as a Jeep Wrangler.
- 2:55Mike Marrs: The Jeep Wrangler.
- 2:57Don Armstrong: The Jeep Wrangler, yeah.
- 2:59Mike Marrs: Uh-oh.
- 3:00Mike Marrs: We lost it.
- 3:00Mike Marrs: Uh-oh.
- 3:01Mike Marrs: He's back.
- 3:02SPEAKER_03: He's back.
- 3:03Don Armstrong: Yeah, you're there.
- 3:04Don Armstrong: You're where you see it.
- 3:05Don Armstrong: Okay.
- 3:06SPEAKER_03: Um, the Wrangler is actually a pretty big vehicle for a compact, but um, the EPA classes it as a compact.
- 3:13SPEAKER_03: Well, of course the EPA does.
- 3:14SPEAKER_03: Your government at work.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 3:16SPEAKER_03: So um, which makes it interesting because it's chief competitor, the next winner, the best mid-size SUV for off-roading, the Ford Bronco, is in a different size class.
- 3:28SPEAKER_03: Huh.
- 3:29Don Armstrong: It is what's and what size class is it?
- 3:32Don Armstrong: It's mid-size.
- 3:34Don Armstrong: A mid-size Bronco.
- 3:35Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 3:36Don Armstrong: And a compact Wrangler.
- 3:38Don Armstrong: Correct.
- 3:39Don Armstrong: So what yeah, yeah, it's it's one of those deals where so what do they use to classify these?
- 3:45Don Armstrong: Is it storage?
- 3:46Don Armstrong: Is it space inside the cabin?
- 3:48SPEAKER_03: I don't get it.
- 3:50SPEAKER_03: I think they have a number of different measures that involves uh wheelbase, overall length, um uh weight.
- 3:59SPEAKER_03: Well, it's all wrong.
- 4:00Mike Marrs: They yeah, it's a variable thing.
- 4:02Mike Marrs: Anything in this range fits into this class, is what they're doing.
- 4:04Mike Marrs: Yeah, okay.
- 4:05SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 4:06SPEAKER_03: You know, you know, you guys have done this long enough that you know that there are vehicles that span multiple classes and they're just hard to place.
- 4:14Don Armstrong: Yep, you're right.
- 4:16SPEAKER_03: Uh best large SUV for off-roading, uh, Nissan Auromata Pro 4X.
- 4:23SPEAKER_03: Seriously, I'm surprised.
- 4:26SPEAKER_03: Really good value out there.
- 4:29SPEAKER_03: Um you know, there are some really capable vehicles in this class.
- 4:33SPEAKER_03: There's GMC Um Yukon 84, um the Tahoe, uh really capable vehicles.
- 4:44SPEAKER_03: But when we looked at things like approach angles, um, approach departure, and breakover angles, the Armada rose to the top.
- 4:53Don Armstrong: Didn't they just redo the Armada within the past few years?
- 4:57Don Armstrong: They did.
- 4:58Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 4:59Don Armstrong: And it's a different vehicle uh today than it was back when.
- 5:04SPEAKER_03: It is.
- 5:05SPEAKER_03: It's um it's actually pretty nice and it's a good value.
- 5:08SPEAKER_03: You can get good deals on Armadas.
- 5:11SPEAKER_03: Interesting right now.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: Okay, all right.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Next.
- 5:13SPEAKER_03: Best hybrid SUV for off-roading, and that's the Toyota RAV4.
- 5:19SPEAKER_03: We uh, you know, these are all based on data, but we had a lot of discussions about this one because there are some pretty capable vehicles in this category.
- 5:27SPEAKER_03: But the RAV4, um the woodland model comes on all terrain tires, makes it decently capable off-road.
- 5:35SPEAKER_03: You're not doing the Rubicon with this vehicle, but um it can get you the trailhead and back.
- 5:42Don Armstrong: You know, it's interesting.
- 5:43Don Armstrong: You you you mentioned that um that I don't really consider something like a RAV 4 to even go off-road because that's not what it comes to mind.
- 5:53Don Armstrong: And I guess that some people will take them off-road, but how big of a sales factor is that when you give it an award for a RAV 4?
- 6:03SPEAKER_03: You know, you know, the thing about American car buyers is we car we buy the car for what we might do someday, not what we do every day.
- 6:14SPEAKER_01: And we never do it.
- 6:16SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 6:17SPEAKER_03: So as long as it looks like it might be able to do it someday, you're good.
- 6:21Mike Marrs: Yeah, one of these days I'm going up that road.
- 6:24Mike Marrs: That's what I think.
- 6:25Jeff Dziekan: Other people think that you've done it.
- 6:27Jeff Dziekan: That's what it is.
- 6:28Jeff Dziekan: That's it.
- 6:29Jeff Dziekan: It's not for you, it's for other people.
- 6:30Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, I think that's a good thing.
- 6:31Jeff Dziekan: And then this is the question that I've got.
- 6:32Jeff Dziekan: Uh John, you you've got all the matrix that you uh go through the the the vehicles and you do the all the checks, all the boxes.
- 6:40Jeff Dziekan: I don't know if this takes effect, but do any of the recalls affect how all this data is compiled, or the data is compiled first and then the recalls happen after?
- 6:49SPEAKER_03: So we don't put the recalls into this scoring model because these are new cars.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: Um, we bit we put the recalls into um our studies when we're looking at used cars, but it's really hard to do that with with new cars.
- 7:07SPEAKER_03: Gotcha.
- 7:08SPEAKER_03: And every new car has recalls, every single one of them.
- 7:12SPEAKER_03: Some of them more serious than others, but every car has recalls.
- 7:16SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 7:17Don Armstrong: What's next on the list?
- 7:19SPEAKER_03: Uh luxury SUV for off-roading.
- 7:21Don Armstrong: There you go.
- 7:22Don Armstrong: Now we're talking over Defender.
- 7:25Don Armstrong: The what?
- 7:25Don Armstrong: The Land Rover Defender?
- 7:27Don Armstrong: You just had one of those, didn't you?
- 7:28Don Armstrong: No, I had a Range Rover.
- 7:29Mike Marrs: Yeah, Range Rover.
- 7:30Mike Marrs: Range Rover.
- 7:31Don Armstrong: Ah that wow.
- 7:33Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 7:34Don Armstrong: $130,000.
- 7:37SPEAKER_03: It's um it's a tough this was a tough category because um the defenders up against the Lexus GX, which is also a great vehicle.
- 7:46SPEAKER_03: But um, approach departure Brancover angles with the air suspension on the defender, uh, may the numbers come out on top for it.
- 7:55Don Armstrong: Well, it doesn't surprise me.
- 7:56Don Armstrong: After driving the the Land Rover Range Rover, you know, I I don't get those very often.
- 8:02Don Armstrong: I'm sure you don't either.
- 8:03Don Armstrong: There just aren't that many around.
- 8:05Don Armstrong: But I will tell you that I was impressed.
- 8:08Don Armstrong: Uh uh, I didn't take it off-road, but it is so off-road capable, I I don't even know what controls what anymore.
- 8:15Don Armstrong: I mean, you can't it'll do anything and everything.
- 8:17Don Armstrong: It's like a Swiss Army knife.
- 8:20SPEAKER_03: Their electronics for traction management are stunning.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: I mean, they can make me look like I'm decent off-road.
- 8:27Don Armstrong: It's just tough to do.
- 8:29Don Armstrong: The big camper that you are.
- 8:32Don Armstrong: Exactly.
- 8:32Jeff Dziekan: I think I mean, wait, he's a glamper.
- 8:35Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's right.
- 8:35Don Armstrong: You're a clamper, not a camper.
- 8:38SPEAKER_03: We just get the dog from one hotel to the next.
- 8:40SPEAKER_03: There you go.
- 8:44SPEAKER_03: Uh, best electric SUV for off-roading, Rivian R1S.
- 8:48Don Armstrong: That's interesting you should say that because you know, I was just talking about Rivian, and uh the Rivian truck is a contender with the Land Rover Range Rover, and I would have never even thought of Rivian being a competitor to anything they're so new, but apparently they are.
- 9:07SPEAKER_03: They are, they are very good vehicles.
- 9:10SPEAKER_03: This is a company that I'm really rooting for because they're doing it right.
- 9:15SPEAKER_03: Um, unlike uh some electric car companies out there, they're taking more of a measured approach, and their second car is about to come out, um, the R2, which um I just sent somebody to that launch event and he came back with a big smile on his face.
- 9:33SPEAKER_03: So looking forward to reading about what he says about the R2.
- 9:36SPEAKER_03: But if it's anything like the R1s, they're gonna be really good.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Well, I'll tell you this.
- 9:41Don Armstrong: I I I got a chance to see an R1 up close and personal.
- 9:44Don Armstrong: I'm going, oh my god, the fit and finish on this, it's like a custom car.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 9:51SPEAKER_03: Um, so this category actually came down to very close between this and the GMC Hummer EV.
- 10:00SPEAKER_03: And the Hummer EV beat it on a lot of the technical factors, um, the off-road factors.
- 10:08SPEAKER_03: But when you come down to a car that you want to live with every day, the Rivian was definitely the choice.
- 10:15Don Armstrong: Interesting.
- 10:15Don Armstrong: Uh it's such a new company to come this far and to actually win an award and be a contender to begin with.
- 10:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 10:23SPEAKER_03: It's impressive.
- 10:24SPEAKER_03: It's actually not that new new of a company anymore.
- 10:27SPEAKER_03: It's what five, six, seven years old now.
- 10:30Don Armstrong: We don't see a lot of them around here, so yeah.
- 10:33Don Armstrong: Well, you know, yeah.
- 10:34Don Armstrong: For uh for us guys, we go back to spoke wood spoke wheels, you know.
- 10:40Don Armstrong: Three months.
- 10:41SPEAKER_03: I know, I know.
- 10:42SPEAKER_03: You you're sure your arms are still sore from cranking.
- 10:45SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 10:48Jeff Dziekan: Show them your guns, Mike.
- 10:53SPEAKER_03: Let's get into the pickup trucks.
- 10:55SPEAKER_03: All right, ready.
- 10:56SPEAKER_03: Uh, mid-size pickup truck for off-roading, Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.
- 11:00SPEAKER_03: Um that's not a surprise.
- 11:03SPEAKER_03: Hard to argue with this one.
- 11:04SPEAKER_03: Um, and there are like two flavors of that truck that are fantastic for off-roading.
- 11:09SPEAKER_03: There's the TRD Pro, which has the coolest seats in any pickup truck.
- 11:14SPEAKER_03: They're actually air suspension seats with shock absorbers in the seat back.
- 11:19SPEAKER_03: So you are isolated from the vehicle as you're ripping across the desert.
- 11:23Don Armstrong: How fun.
- 11:24Don Armstrong: Sounds like a you know, an 18-wheeler truck.
- 11:26Don Armstrong: Yeah, I was thinking the same thing.
- 11:28SPEAKER_03: Except much more managed than that.
- 11:30SPEAKER_03: I mean, you're it's I swear it feels like you're it's a gyroscope where you're not moving and everything else around you is.
- 11:38SPEAKER_03: Wow.
- 11:39SPEAKER_01: Interesting.
- 11:39SPEAKER_03: Well, that's brilliant, yeah.
- 11:40SPEAKER_03: It's really cool.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And then on the flip side for the slow technical off-roading, um, they have the trail hunter, which uh it's a different setup, but just as capable in a different off-road realm.
- 11:58SPEAKER_03: Very interesting, yeah.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Uh full-size pickup for off-roading Ford F-150.
- 12:03SPEAKER_03: Um, they have three flavors of that truck that are fantastic for off-roading.
- 12:07SPEAKER_03: There's the FX4 package, which is just a basic off-roading package, there's the Tremor, and then there's the Raptor.
- 12:14SPEAKER_03: And it's hard to hard to argue with the big Raptor V8.
- 12:19Don Armstrong: Yeah, the only thing that I can think that would come in close it would be the uh Ram TRX.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Ram TRX, uh, which is not currently available yet.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: It's going to be again.
- 12:31SPEAKER_03: For 27, it will be available, yeah.
- 12:33SPEAKER_03: For these purposes.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:34SPEAKER_03: I got you.
- 12:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:36SPEAKER_03: Um although the Ram Rebel is still pretty capable, too.
- 12:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, love the Ram Rebel.
- 12:41SPEAKER_03: Um, best electric SUV for off-roading.
- 12:44SPEAKER_03: People actually do this.
- 12:45SPEAKER_03: It's the Ruby and R1T.
- 12:48SPEAKER_03: Um, some pretty unique features.
- 12:50SPEAKER_03: Uh, hidden storage and its gear tunnel, uh, great range.
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: You know, people will be heading to the gas station with their trucks before you're heading to the charger.
- 13:01Don Armstrong: How is the uh how is the interface there with the infotainment system?
- 13:05SPEAKER_03: It's getting better um with a lot of the new startup companies.
- 13:09SPEAKER_03: They're having trouble getting all the bugs worked out of their infotainment systems.
- 13:14SPEAKER_03: Um, although I was just in a legacy automaker's car last new car last week that was just as buggy as any startup car company's um infotainment system.
- 13:24SPEAKER_03: They are getting better.
- 13:25SPEAKER_03: One of the great things about them is they can take uh over-the-air updates so you don't have to go to the shop to get them fixed.
- 13:32SPEAKER_03: They just send a file into the car and it fixes things.
- 13:36Don Armstrong: Nice.
- 13:36Don Armstrong: Well, that's handy.
- 13:37Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, mine does that.
- 13:38Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:39Don Armstrong: We're looking for the maid to do that here at the house.
- 13:42Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 13:42Don Armstrong: Uh we'll have her just kind of cut.
- 13:45SPEAKER_03: Rosie the maid.
- 13:46SPEAKER_03: Rosie, yeah.
- 13:46Don Armstrong: Rosie.
- 13:47Mike Marrs: Yeah, yeah.
- 13:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:48SPEAKER_03: I just bought a new car a couple weeks ago.
- 13:51SPEAKER_03: You actually bought a car?
- 13:53SPEAKER_03: I did.
- 13:54SPEAKER_03: What did you buy?
- 13:55SPEAKER_03: I bought a Genesis G V70.
- 13:58Don Armstrong: That's not a surprise.
- 13:59Don Armstrong: I can understand that.
- 14:01Don Armstrong: That's a very nice vehicle.
- 14:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it really is.
- 14:04SPEAKER_03: It's and I got the the Twin Turbo Twin Turbo V6, which um it rips.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: It rips, yeah.
- 14:12Jeff Dziekan: So spunk, that's some spunk.
- 14:14Jeff Dziekan: Yeah.
- 14:14Don Armstrong: Uh, was it real expensive?
- 14:16Don Armstrong: Because when I think of Genesis, I think a pretty expensive car.
- 14:20SPEAKER_03: They are a yeah, they're a higher-end vehicle, but um, compared to buying a Mercedes or a BMW, quite the bargain, and linear warranty.
- 14:30Mike Marrs: Yeah, that makes a big difference with that twin turbo.
- 14:33Don Armstrong: So let's wrap up the uh adventure vehicle awards.
- 14:38SPEAKER_03: Uh let's go into best vehicles for camping.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: Umpact Bronco Smart again.
- 14:46SPEAKER_03: Subcompact hybrid, Subaru Cross Trek Hybrid.
- 14:49SPEAKER_03: I knew Subaru was coming.
- 14:50SPEAKER_03: Yeah, Subaru's gotta be on this list.
- 14:52SPEAKER_03: It's not here as often as you would think, but uh compact SUV for camping, Hyundai Tucson.
- 14:59SPEAKER_03: Uh the Tucson wins on cargo space, which uh is just a little bit better than the RAV4 or the CRV.
- 15:07SPEAKER_03: Interesting.
- 15:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 15:08SPEAKER_03: Um same reason for the compact hybrid for camping.
- 15:11SPEAKER_03: Um Tucson hybrid.
- 15:15SPEAKER_03: Um compact plug-in hybrid SUV.
- 15:18SPEAKER_03: We're slicing things pretty close here.
- 15:20SPEAKER_03: Toyota RAV4 plug-in hybrid.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Mid-size SUV for camping, GMC Acadia.
- 15:28SPEAKER_03: Uh Tons of Cargo Room.
- 15:29SPEAKER_03: Um, very capable versions of that vehicle are available.
- 15:34SPEAKER_03: Mid-size hybrid SUV for camping, uh, Toyota Grand Highlander.
- 15:39SPEAKER_03: And whether you put this in the mid-size or large category, um it's just a really nice family vehicle.
- 15:48Don Armstrong: Yeah, they have grown that Highlander to big sizes now.
- 15:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and you know, you gotta remember that when we're talking adventure vehicles, people might do this 10, 20 days a year.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: You want a vehicle that's gonna, you know, do everything you need it to do for the other 355.
- 16:06Don Armstrong: And be able to put the bicycles on top of all the junk that you've got in the back.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:10SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 16:11Don Armstrong: Yeah, forget the mother-in-law.
- 16:12Don Armstrong: I've seen that, including the mother-in-law.
- 16:15Don Armstrong: Yeah.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: Oh, you've seen vacation.
- 16:17SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 16:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's right.
- 16:19Don Armstrong: Yeah, that's right.
- 16:20SPEAKER_03: Uh, best mid-size plug-in SUV for for camping.
- 16:24SPEAKER_03: Uh, this category's gotten smaller.
- 16:27SPEAKER_03: Um Mazda's CX90 P Hev.
- 16:30SPEAKER_03: Um, with the departure of the Grand Cherokee 4xE.
- 16:35SPEAKER_03: There aren't many plug-in hybrids available out there in this category anymore.
- 16:39Don Armstrong: Well, they don't sell that many of them anyway.
- 16:41SPEAKER_03: No, they don't.
- 16:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 16:43SPEAKER_03: Uh large SUV for camping, uh GMC Yukon XL, which is essentially the suburban version, the GMC is suburban.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 16:52SPEAKER_03: Uh, with a slightly nicer interior.
- 16:54Don Armstrong: Yep.
- 16:55SPEAKER_03: Electric SUV for camping, Hyundai Ionic 9.
- 16:59SPEAKER_03: I think you I think we've talked about this vehicle on the show before.
- 17:03SPEAKER_03: Um, this is just a great all-around family vehicle that happens to be electric.
- 17:08Don Armstrong: Yeah, if we if we could just get the range up uh to the point where, like this uh GMC that I had recently with a 500-mile range on it with the big battery, yeah.
- 17:20Don Armstrong: And I think that that that's gonna be more of a thing of the future that uh more and more of these manufacturers are gonna do that.
- 17:27SPEAKER_03: Yep, I mean evolving technology.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 17:30SPEAKER_03: Yeah, better, faster, smaller.
- 17:34Don Armstrong: Yeah, so the let me ask you this.
- 17:36Don Armstrong: So who wins the top tip top award for best adventure vehicle overall?
- 17:42Don Armstrong: We don't have one.
- 17:43SPEAKER_03: We broke it down into classes.
- 17:45Don Armstrong: No Buick, yeah.
- 17:47Don Armstrong: Gotta have a big trophy.
- 17:49Don Armstrong: Well, you know, I yeah, it's what I'm thinking.
- 17:51Don Armstrong: And I'm thinking also that in next year, when we do this for U.S.
- 17:54Don Armstrong: News and World Report, now that in wheel time has mentioned it, that's gonna be the new deal.
- 18:01Don Armstrong: So all those vehicles gotta have number one.
- 18:04SPEAKER_03: I will say, I will say this in the politically correct way that a manufacturer would tell us we will take that into consideration.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: Under advisement.
- 18:13Jeff Dziekan: Under advisement.
- 18:14Don Armstrong: That's perfect.
- 18:15Don Armstrong: You've heard that before, haven't you?
- 18:17Don Armstrong: Somewhere, no doubt.
- 18:18Jeff Dziekan: Some of these that you mentioned, I don't have an affinity with their looks.
- 18:22Jeff Dziekan: So I'm thinking that some of these I've they just don't do anything for me aesthetically, so I wouldn't be interested to begin with in looking at the vehicles.
- 18:31Don Armstrong: It narrows the field, so to speak.
- 18:33SPEAKER_03: That's whenever you're a car buyer.
- 18:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 18:35unknown: Yeah.
- 18:36SPEAKER_03: It's always that way, yeah, no doubt.

- 21:17Don Armstrong: Thanks for being with us today.
- 21:18Don Armstrong: Time now for Jeff's car culture.
- 21:20Don Armstrong: White letter tires, brother.
- 21:21Jeff Dziekan: Yeah, well, you know, the trend of white letter tires gained significant momentum in the 60s and 70s, especially here in the U.S.
- 21:27Jeff Dziekan: of A.
- 21:27Jeff Dziekan: Muscle cars and street racing were becoming increasingly popular.
- 21:31Jeff Dziekan: White letter tires became synonymous with performance and style and coolness that we all had associated with high performance vehicles as well.
- 21:39Jeff Dziekan: White lettering on tires comes in two primary types raised and painted.
- 21:43Jeff Dziekan: Each type has a distinct characteristics and manufacturing process.
- 21:46Jeff Dziekan: Raised white lettering is created during the manufacturing process itself.
- 21:50Jeff Dziekan: The letters are raised above the tire surface and are part of an integral portion of that sidewall.
- 21:56Jeff Dziekan: White lettering is typically made from white rubber.
- 21:58Jeff Dziekan: Rubber is actually kind of a cream color.
- 22:00Jeff Dziekan: To begin with, it's a compound that is molded into the tire.
- 22:03Jeff Dziekan: Raised letters are known for their durability since it's part of the tire itself.
- 22:06Jeff Dziekan: Painted white lettering improves or involves applying white paint to the tire after it has been manufactured.
- 22:13Jeff Dziekan: The paint is applied to a desired area of the sidewall.
- 22:16Jeff Dziekan: We used to do that with a chalk, a crayon, uh fingernail polish.
- 22:19Jeff Dziekan: We used to do all kinds of stuff like that.
- 22:20Jeff Dziekan: Yes, we did.
- 22:22Jeff Dziekan: Requires more maintenance though.
- 22:23Jeff Dziekan: Both types have their advantages and are chosen based on specific needs and preferences of the vehicle and their owner.
- 22:29Jeff Dziekan: Raised white lettering, uh being more durable, is often preferred as the regular use, and painted white letters allows you more customization, is popular among the car enthusiasts who frequently change the aesthetics of their vehicle.
- 22:41Jeff Dziekan: The manufacturing process of white letter tires includes ORWL, which is outlined raised white letters, is intricate and requires precise techniques to ensure durability and the clarity of the lettering.
- 22:52Jeff Dziekan: No font uh distortion there.
- 22:55Jeff Dziekan: The process varies depending on what letter is being raised.
- 22:59Jeff Dziekan: Uh raised white lettering is typically created using a specialized molding process.
- 23:04Jeff Dziekan: The white rubber compound is inserted into the mold along with black rubber and is used for the rest of the tire.
- 23:10Jeff Dziekan: So that they're just injecting a little bit of portions at a time.
- 23:13Jeff Dziekan: During the vulcanization process, and Spock does knows that, uh, whereas the tire is heated and cured, curing the rubber, the white and black compounds fuse together.
- 23:24Jeff Dziekan: Painted white lettering is fully formed and cured in the area, the white lettering, and is applied thoroughly and cleaned and prepared.
- 23:32Jeff Dziekan: Specialized durable paint is then carefully applied to the designated areas.
- 23:36Jeff Dziekan: This process might be done by hand or with the help of automated machinery for consistency and precision.
- 23:41Jeff Dziekan: Both methods require careful quality control and ensure the lettering is not only aesthetically pleasing, but also to withstand the rigors of road use without fading or peeling.
- 23:51Jeff Dziekan: And regular cleaning is essential to get the dirt and all the buildup and keep it from yellowing.
- 23:56Jeff Dziekan: Using cleaners specifically designed for it is advisable because you can really tarnish it and mess it up.
- 24:01Jeff Dziekan: Avoid exposure to harsh chemicals and solvents, deteriorating the rubber.
- 24:05Jeff Dziekan: We used to use brake fluid to get our tires black.
- 24:08Don Armstrong: Oh my god.
- 24:08Jeff Dziekan: Oh yeah, that was back in the day.
- 24:10Jeff Dziekan: Uh for those seeking non-permanent solutions, temporary decals can be applied to the sidewall.
- 24:15Jeff Dziekan: There are actually companies out there, professional companies, that will design lettering and apply them to your tire.
- 24:21Jeff Dziekan: Uh while comparing all of these raised white letters, outline white letters, consider this.
- 24:26Jeff Dziekan: They are a little bit higher priced, even if when you buy it, you know, from the from the uh tire store, and then the raised white letters can be a little bit more money as well.
- 24:34Jeff Dziekan: The resurgence of vintage and retro styles and automotive design has been a renewed interest in the white letter tiring.
- 24:41Jeff Dziekan: The ability to customize and personalize tires, white lettering, appears to be pretty advantageous for the consumer, and it's kind of unique and it makes a unique style statement for them.
- 24:50Jeff Dziekan: White lettering on tires is often associated with specific brands, influencing customer loyalty and preference.
- 24:56Jeff Dziekan: The trends indicate that while practical considerations are important, the aesthetics and brand-related aspects of the tire design significantly influence the customer's choice.
- 25:06Jeff Dziekan: And there you've got all kinds of things.
- 25:07Jeff Dziekan: You could create your own design, you can uh get on their website, and they'll send you the stickers themselves, and you can you can put Don Armstrong on the side of your tire.
- 25:15Jeff Dziekan: No, I don't want Don Armstrong either.
- 25:18Don Armstrong: All right.
- 25:19Don Armstrong: Thank you, Jeffrey.
- 25:20Don Armstrong: Time now for Mr.
- 25:21Don Armstrong: Mahr's Driving Destinations.
- 25:23Don Armstrong: Here we go.
- 25:23Don Armstrong: And this week, Mr.
- 25:25Don Armstrong: Mahr's hidden Houston Speakeasies.
- 25:29Don Armstrong: I'm ready.
- 25:29Don Armstrong: I'm all ears.
- 25:32Mike Marrs: So for our younger audience that really is not familiar with the idea of the speakeasy.
- 25:38Mike Marrs: That came about because during Prohibition you had to go to a hidden bar.
- 25:42Mike Marrs: Sometimes it was special knocks on a certain door or something like that.
- 25:46Mike Marrs: Anyway, that were kind of hidden, and that's the reason they call the speakeasy because you had the speakeasy to get into it.
- 25:52Mike Marrs: So in Houston, we've got a few, and uh what they do is give you that little mystery, the little atmosphere, and and an easy place to have some conversation uh over some really nice cocktails in these hidden places.
- 26:04Mike Marrs: Downtown's hidden bookcase experience.
- 26:07Mike Marrs: Now, we're gonna start with Dender Downtown, then we're gonna slip behind a bookcase literally to get to Captain Fox Hart's Bad News and Bar Spirit Lodge.
- 26:17Mike Marrs: And also in um in the name in the hidden bar district.
- 26:21Mike Marrs: Now, this is one of the classic speakeasy setups in that you have to go through uh uh a hidden place.
- 26:28Mike Marrs: It's not widely known.
- 26:29Mike Marrs: Uh it is, but it's not.
- 26:30Mike Marrs: It's supposed to be hidden, it's supposed to be secretive.
- 26:34Mike Marrs: And but this place has a really nice balcony that you can set out there on and you have a nice view of downtown.
- 26:40Mike Marrs: It's really nice during the evening where the lights come up and everything.
- 26:44Mike Marrs: And uh they have some really great craft cocktails and a real nice food menu to go along with it.
- 26:50Mike Marrs: Now, from there, if you want something for more of a little more special occasion date, go to Bandista.
- 26:56Mike Marrs: Now, this is hidden literally behind the entrance within the hotel of the four seasons.
- 27:02Mike Marrs: Now it's only 20 seats in this speakeasy, so it's very uh very small, very uh exclusive, intimate exclusive, but it's got all the prohibition-inspired touches to it and with modern mixology.
- 27:17Mike Marrs: So the uh you can sit in there and you can uh kind of like sitting in a theater to watch what goes on, ordering the drinks from the bar, and you can actually pair it with dinner while you're downtown.
- 27:28Mike Marrs: It just creates a nice little venue to go and sneak off to, like is what you would want for speakeasy.
- 27:34Mike Marrs: Now, this other one here is one of Houston's kind of unusual date night concept is case chocolates.
- 27:42Mike Marrs: Now, it doesn't focus solely on drinks because it's got the cozy speakeasy style venue, but it also puts that with the artisan chocolates that are cute go with curated uh cocktails.
- 27:56Mike Marrs: Now, this is uh kind of creates a lot of conversation just because it's something different.
- 28:01Mike Marrs: You're sitting there talking, and uh it's not very far, it is downtown, but it's a really nice place to set at and get to.
- 28:10Mike Marrs: From there, you could go over to the River Oaks uh hotel where it's called a place called the Fancies.
- 28:17Mike Marrs: Again, it's a prohibition area era.
- 28:20Mike Marrs: The venue combines the art decal styling, live music, low lighting, and craft cocktails to give you that kind of hidden-away unique experience that you might find and expect to see in a speakeasy.
- 28:32Mike Marrs: Now it's hidden upstairs in a uh it's a hidden lounge upstairs, and it gives you that sense that you're going to a private party, not necessarily an open area bar.
- 28:44Mike Marrs: The uh if you're looking for something that's a little more old, if you will, mafarless.
- 28:51Don Armstrong: Mar Marfrayless.
- 28:53Don Armstrong: Marfrailess, yes.
- 28:54Mike Marrs: I do that.
- 28:56Mike Marrs: So you're familiar with it, Don?
- 28:58Don Armstrong: Uh, yes, I am, and I'm not gonna tell you why.
- 29:01Mike Marrs: Uh just please move on.
- 29:03Don Armstrong: Don't run short of time.
- 29:05Don Armstrong: This is the place to be.
- 29:12Mike Marrs: One other thing I would mention in a real hurry is the hidden bar in Rice Village.
- 29:17Mike Marrs: And uh the name kind of says it all.
- 29:19Mike Marrs: It's tucked away into a nice setting, intimate cocktails, and uh got dinner nearby.
- 29:24Mike Marrs: Just a nice place that you can go to to have a nice date night in someplace different.
- 29:29Don Armstrong: And even though you didn't ask, I am going to tell you that Marfraelis used to be back in the day the make out bar in Houston.
- 29:36Don Armstrong: Thank you for asking.
