Speaker 1: Chapter thirty two, in which Phileas Fogg engages in a
• 0:04
Speaker 1: direct struggle with bad fortune. The China, in leaving seemed
• 0:12
Speaker 1: to have carried off Phileas Fogg's last hope. None of
• 0:15
Speaker 1: the other steamers were able to serve his projects. De
• 0:19
Speaker 1: Pereire of the French Transatlantic Company, whose admirable steamers are
• 0:24
Speaker 1: equal to any in speed and comfort, did not leave
• 0:28
Speaker 1: until the fourteenth The Hamburg boats did not go directly
• 0:32
Speaker 1: to Liverpool or London, but to Hove, and the additional
• 0:35
Speaker 1: trip from Hove to Southampton would render Phileas Fogg's last
• 0:39
Speaker 1: efforts of no avail. The Inmand steamer did not depart
• 0:43
Speaker 1: till the next day and could not cross the Atlantic
• 0:46
Speaker 1: in time to save the wager. Mister Fogg learned all
• 0:49
Speaker 1: this in consoling his Bradshaw, which gave him the daily
• 0:53
Speaker 1: movements of the Transatlantic steamers. Passepartout was crushed. It overwhelmed
• 0:59
Speaker 1: him to lose the boat by three quarters of an hour.
• 1:03
Speaker 1: It was his fault, for instead of helping his master,
• 1:06
Speaker 1: he had not ceased putting obstacles in his path. And
• 1:10
Speaker 1: when he recalled all the incidents of the tour, when
• 1:13
Speaker 1: he counted up the sums expended in pure loss and
• 1:16
Speaker 1: on his own account. When he thought that the immense stake,
• 1:19
Speaker 1: added to the heavy charges of this useless journey, would
• 1:23
Speaker 1: completely ruin mister Fogg, he overwhelmed himself with bitter self accusations.
• 1:31
Speaker 1: Mister Fogg, however, did not reproach him, and on leaving
• 1:34
Speaker 1: the Cunard Pier only said, we will consult about what
• 1:39
Speaker 1: is best tomorrow come. The party crossed the Hudson in
• 1:43
Speaker 1: the Jersey City ferryboat and drove in a carriage to
• 1:47
Speaker 1: the Saint Nicholas Hotel on Broadway. Rooms were engaged and
• 1:51
Speaker 1: the night passed briefly to Phileas Fogg, who slept profoundly,
• 1:56
Speaker 1: but very long, to Aouda and the others, whose agitation
• 1:59
Speaker 1: did did not permit them to rest. The next day
• 2:03
Speaker 1: was the twelfth of December. From seven in the morning
• 2:06
Speaker 1: of the twelfth to a quarter before nine in the
• 2:09
Speaker 1: evening of the twenty first, there were nine days, thirteen
• 2:13
Speaker 1: hours and forty five minutes. If Phileas Fogg had left
• 2:17
Speaker 1: in the China, one of the fastest steamers on the Atlantic,
• 2:20
Speaker 1: he would have reached Liverpool and then London within the
• 2:23
Speaker 1: period agreed upon, mister Fogg left the hotel alone, after
• 2:28
Speaker 1: giving passepartout instructions to await his return and inform Aouda
• 2:33
Speaker 1: to be ready at an instant's notice. He proceeded to
• 2:36
Speaker 1: the banks of the Hudson and looked about among the
• 2:39
Speaker 1: vessels moored or anchored in the river for any that
• 2:42
Speaker 1: were about to depart. Several had departure signals and were
• 2:46
Speaker 1: preparing to put to sea at morning tide. For in
• 2:50
Speaker 1: this immense and admirable port, there is not one day
• 2:53
Speaker 1: in a hundred that vessels do not set out for
• 2:55
Speaker 1: every quarter of the globe. But they were mostly sailing vessels,
• 3:01
Speaker 1: of which, of course Phileas Fogg could make no use.
• 3:05
Speaker 1: He seemed about to give up all hope when he spied,
• 3:09
Speaker 1: anchored at the battery a cable's length off at most
• 3:13
Speaker 1: a trading vessel with a screw well shaped, whose funnel
• 3:17
Speaker 1: puffing a cloud of smoke, indicated that she was getting
• 3:20
Speaker 1: ready for departure. Phileas Fogg hailed the boat, got into it,
• 3:24
Speaker 1: and soon found himself on board the Henrietta, iron hulled
• 3:29
Speaker 1: wood built above. He ascended to the deck and asked
• 3:32
Speaker 1: for the captain who forthwith presented himself. He was a
• 3:36
Speaker 1: man of fifty, a sort of sea wolf, with big eyes,
• 3:41
Speaker 1: a complexion of oxidized copper red hair, and thick neck,
• 3:46
Speaker 1: and a growling voice. The captain asked, mister Fogg, I
• 3:52
Speaker 1: am the captain. I'm Phileas Fogg of London, and I
• 3:58
Speaker 1: am Andrew Speedy of card If you are going to
• 4:02
Speaker 1: put to sea in an hour? You are bound for Bordeaux,
• 4:09
Speaker 1: and your cargo no freight going in ballast? Have you
• 4:14
Speaker 1: any passengers? No passengers, Never have passengers too much in
• 4:20
Speaker 1: the way. Is your vessel a swift one between eleven
• 4:25
Speaker 1: and twelve knots? The Henrietta well known? Will you carry
• 4:30
Speaker 1: me and three other persons to Liverpool? To Liverpool? Why
• 4:35
Speaker 1: not to China? I said Liverpool. No, no, no, I
• 4:44
Speaker 1: am setting out for Bordeaux and shall go to Bordeaux.
• 4:48
Speaker 1: Money is no object none. The captain spoke in a
• 4:54
Speaker 1: tone which did not admit of a reply, but the
• 4:57
Speaker 1: owners of the Henrietta resumed Phileas Fogg. The owners are myself,
• 5:04
Speaker 1: replied the captain. The vessel belongs to me. I will
• 5:08
Speaker 1: freight it for you. No, I will buy it of you. No,
• 5:16
Speaker 1: Phileas Fogg did not betray the least disappointment, but the
• 5:20
Speaker 1: situation was a grave one. It was not at New York,
• 5:24
Speaker 1: as at Hong Kong, nor with the captain of the Henrietta,
• 5:27
Speaker 1: as with the captain of the Tankadere. Up to this
• 5:30
Speaker 1: time money had smoothed away every obstacle. Now money failed. Still,
• 5:36
Speaker 1: some means must be found across the Atlantic on a boat,
• 5:40
Speaker 1: unless by balloon, which would have been venturesome, besides not
• 5:45
Speaker 1: being capable of being put in practice. It seemed that
• 5:48
Speaker 1: Phileas Fogg had an idea. For he said to the captain, well,
• 5:53
Speaker 1: will you carry me to Bordeaux? No, not if you
• 5:57
Speaker 1: paid me two hundred dollars. I offer you two thousand
• 6:03
Speaker 1: apiece apiece, and there are four of you four. Captain
• 6:11
Speaker 1: Speedy began to scratch his head. There were eight thousand
• 6:15
Speaker 1: dollars to gain without changing his route, for which it
• 6:18
Speaker 1: was well worth conquering the repugnance he had for all
• 6:21
Speaker 1: kinds of passengers. Besides passengers at two thousand dollars, are
• 6:25
Speaker 1: no longer passengers, but valuable merchandise. I start at nine o'clock,
• 6:32
Speaker 1: said Captain Speedy. Simply, are you and your party ready,
• 6:37
Speaker 1: we will be on board at nine o'clock, replied no
• 6:40
Speaker 1: less simply, mister Fogg, it was half past eight, did
• 6:45
Speaker 1: disembark from the Henrietta, jump into a hack, hurry to
• 6:48
Speaker 1: the Saint Nicholas and return with aouda Passepartout, And even
• 6:52
Speaker 1: the inseparable fix was the work of a brief time,
• 6:55
Speaker 1: and was performed by mister Fogg with the coolness which
• 6:58
Speaker 1: never abandoned him. They were on board when the Henrietta
• 7:01
Speaker 1: made ready to weigh anchor. When Passepartout heard what this
• 7:05
Speaker 1: last voyage was going to cost, he uttered a prolonged oh,
• 7:11
Speaker 1: which extended throughout his vocal gamut. As for fix, he
• 7:15
Speaker 1: said to himself that the Bank of England would certainly
• 7:18
Speaker 1: not come out of this affair well indemnified. When they
• 7:21
Speaker 1: reached England. Even if mister Fogg did not throw some
• 7:24
Speaker 1: handfuls of bank bills into the sea, more than seven
• 7:28
Speaker 1: thousand pounds would have been spent. End of chapter
