- 0:00I love finishing the the season in Miami.
- 0:02It's something that I think as an industry all of us got so
- 0:06used to. Right end of the year.
- 0:08It's cold in other places, you fly down to Miami, it's nice and
- 0:11warm. We got used to what that weekend
- 0:14felt like under the lights, finishing the races.
- 0:17I I always thought it was just a a really cool environment to do
- 0:21it in Miami. So I look forward to going back
- 0:24down there racing for a championship.
- 0:26You know, I like that part. I like the rotation as well,
- 0:29right? I like that we move it around.
- 0:30That was one of the things that I always thought would be a
- 0:32great idea if we were able to pull it off right.
- 0:35The the Super Bowl doesn't stay in the same place every year.
- 0:39Why should our Super Bowl, our championship race, you know,
- 0:43stay in the same place every year?
- 0:44So gives our fans a great opportunity to to see the race
- 0:48right. I know a lot of fans travel to
- 0:50the championship race already, but there's also a lot of fans
- 0:53that are local that'll they'll get to have the opportunity to
- 0:57be able to to make a weekend out of it with a short drive
- 1:00hopefully. Joey, we often hear that some
- 1:02drivers opinions could be shaped by what's in their own best
- 1:04interest. So how come you're not out there
- 1:06going wait, no, Phoenix is the best thing ever?
- 1:09Don't never move it from Phoenix based on how good Team Penske's
- 1:12been there. I mean, on one hand, I like to
- 1:16think that we can win anywhere, right?
- 1:17We've won in Miami before. Why can't we win there again?
- 1:21So I I feel good about that. Is there probably some drivers
- 1:25that are happier than others? Well, yeah, I can think of two
- 1:28or three that are pretty good in Miami that are probably really
- 1:31excited about today. But, you know, I I like to think
- 1:36that, you know, when when you're in the championship mode,
- 1:38there's there's probably no bad racetrack for you.
- 1:40You you probably can figure it out no matter where you're at.
- 1:43And as a team, I feel like Team Penske's strong that we can go
- 1:45to many places and and compete. So, yeah, as as great as Phoenix
- 1:50has been, and it definitely has been, you know, I still feel
- 1:53like we can we can win anywhere. Hey Joey, thanks for the time.
- 1:57You know, we, we talk about moving the championship race,
- 2:00but I guess with, you know, the, the, the playoff committee kind
- 2:04of still deciding what that looks like.
- 2:07Have you had an opportunity to kind of read the tea leaves or
- 2:11get an idea for what direction NASCAR might most likely decide
- 2:15to go next year? I don't think there's a, a,
- 2:17quite a clear direction on where things are going.
- 2:22You're talking to the guy that thinks we have a great system.
- 2:24So I, I would make minimal changes, if any.
- 2:30So, you know, and then there's different opinions, right?
- 2:32And, and all of us are you, all of us will have different ones
- 2:37probably depending on where you're sitting.
- 2:38But I, I try to look at it as a race fan and say what, what,
- 2:42what do I think is the most entertaining when I'm watching
- 2:44the Truck Series or the Xfinity series?
- 2:46As that's what I am a pure race fan watching what brings the
- 2:50most drama, but also the most like do or die moments, right?
- 2:56As a as a fan of sports in general, I love watching people
- 3:01with their back up against the wall have to perform or you're
- 3:04going home, right? Like I love that.
- 3:06That's what I love about playoffs.
- 3:08And so our format does that right.
- 3:11It gives everybody in the playoffs an opportunity to go
- 3:15out there and show up when it matters the most.
- 3:18It also gives the opportunity for teams to create a a huge
- 3:21advantage going into the playoffs with the playoff points
- 3:25that's there. So I don't know, I know one
- 3:29wants to hear my opinion on it because we've been successful
- 3:31with this this, but I do feel like it's pretty fun to watch as
- 3:35well. And then one kind of oddball
- 3:38question for you too. You're very good at doing, you
- 3:42know, activation, hospitality, media requests.
- 3:46Have you been incentivized this year by the driver ambassador
- 3:51program? And then do you sense a bit of
- 3:53competition amongst you and your peers to kind of step up what
- 3:57you do on that front? Yeah, I think I mean, yes, to
- 4:02answer your question, I mean, I've always done all the things
- 4:05before and I always did it because I care about the sport,
- 4:08right? I want the sport to live on past
- 4:11past my my career, because that's what the previous
- 4:16generation did for me and the previous generation did for them
- 4:19is they built this amazing platform.
- 4:21We need to continue to do that, right?
- 4:25And and I realize I cannot do that on my own.
- 4:28And I also think that no one should work for free.
- 4:32I don't think that's the case either, right?
- 4:34I mean, anytime that you do something, you're taking away
- 4:36from something else. And, you know, I think being
- 4:40able to be, you know, incentivized to do things and
- 4:44is, is not a bad thing. And I think we've seen that
- 4:47throughout the, the whole sport with the drivers right now,
- 4:51they're doing stuff right. They're out there, right,
- 4:53whether it's autographs at the souvenir haulers or it's doing
- 4:57media engagements, it's traveling to do things that like
- 5:01would never happen, never happened before.
- 5:05And so there's a yeah, there's a reason to go do it now, and not
- 5:09that there wasn't before, but there's extra reason to go do
- 5:12it. And it seems to be working for
- 5:13sure. Thank you, Joey for joining us.
- 5:152 questions here if Joey Logano was able to make the next. 3 or
- 5:204. Final races as a schedule, What
- 5:24would they be? And I have to ask this.
- 5:26Caveat I. Work in the Myrtle Beach
- 5:28Florence area, so Darlington obviously a big.
- 5:32Spotlight. Here in our area so with.
- 5:34Darlington be on that list and then a second question after you
- 5:37finish the 1st. Yeah, I think one thing
- 5:42everybody thinks about is, is weather right in South
- 5:46Carolina's can be fine. Yeah.
- 5:50So that that track would be in the mix.
- 5:53You know, naturally you're going to look at the tracks you're
- 5:54good at like at Richmond, right? Like that's one that you that
- 5:59would stand out to me. But you know, I think Vegas
- 6:04would probably be in the loop. You know, Texas is obviously
- 6:08possible depending on the, you know, the weather there is
- 6:11pretty good. You know, I wouldn't want to add
- 6:16into the rotation of a superspeedway.
- 6:19We should not end the season on a superspeedway.
- 6:21We should not end the season on a road course either.
- 6:24That's my opinion because when you get down to the nitty gritty
- 6:28of the playoffs and and especially if it's coming down
- 6:30to one race like it is right now, you don't want to, you
- 6:36don't want an eyeball race. You wanted the grassroots of
- 6:38what are built. Our sport is built off of which
- 6:41is ovals, right? Whether it's a short track or a
- 6:44mile and a half, that's what our that's what our, you know, our
- 6:47roots really are. That is what built our sport.
- 6:50And so, you know, throwing in a row course or any other oddball
- 6:55type racetrack, you know, superspeedway, it's too much by
- 6:59chance and it wouldn't be ideal, I don't believe for a sport.
- 7:04A second question for you as you you've made so many accolades in
- 7:08this sport, but one thing that has kind of not made it your way
- 7:12yet, which we are coming up on the coca.
- 7:14Cola 600 talk about. What a victory there would be
- 7:18like and just what that race entitles with it being the
- 7:20longest race of the season. Yeah, I mean, you brought it up.
- 7:23Just two of them that that really stand out to me.
- 7:26One being Indy and the other one being the Coke 600.
- 7:29You know, I'd like to win both of them.
- 7:31Both of them are crown jewel events.
- 7:34The Coca-Cola 600 is special because of what it is.
- 7:38It's also special because I've been a Coca-Cola Racing family
- 7:42member for my whole career, from day one, 16, whatever years it
- 7:48will go, it was. So it's been a long time that
- 7:51the it'd be really cool to click off that win on top of what that
- 7:55weekend already means, right? Memorial Day weekend, which is
- 7:57to me means way more than what the the race is.
- 8:00But it definitely be neat to celebrate and Victory Lane
- 8:03there. So Joey, I want to talk about
- 8:05the drama that you talk. You mentioned everyone loves
- 8:08drama. It's part of what makes NASCAR
- 8:09great. I was curious, when you have it
- 8:12going to different tracks for rotation for the championship,
- 8:16does that ramp up the drama level knowing that you
- 8:18automatically can't pencil in, you know, Penske at Phoenix,
- 8:21Oregon, Reddick or Larson at Homestead?
- 8:25I mean, I don't think anyone can like pencil anyone in no matter
- 8:28what, but I think we've seen in our sport that change is good
- 8:34when it comes to schedules and even changing the rules, it's
- 8:39usually good. Makes better racing.
- 8:41I think that, you know, people want they, they like the
- 8:46unknown. They don't.
- 8:47They're not exactly sure where things are going to play out.
- 8:49And you know, whether that's moving to new race tracks we've
- 8:52never been to, we've seen that be very successful.
- 8:55And I think moving the final race around, it's not a bad
- 8:58idea. Joey, so many drivers over the
- 9:00years have remarked how much they enjoy, they have enjoyed
- 9:03Homestead Miami Speed, but specifically either as a regular
- 9:06season race or a playoff slash championship race.
- 9:10Between the layout of the track itself, the weather and how that
- 9:13changes from the afternoon to the night, or just the general
- 9:16location, what it what would you say is the primary reason that
- 9:19so many drivers are basically in love with Homestead Miami
- 9:23Speedway? I mean, if you're asking
- 9:25drivers, it's about the track, right?
- 9:27Like the environment obviously is really cool.
- 9:30It's different, right, Being in Miami, like that's a a neat
- 9:33thing. But the drivers, what we care
- 9:36about is the racing, right? Can we move around the
- 9:39racetrack? Can we do different things?
- 9:40Are the tires falling off? You know, is that fun, right?
- 9:44And to us, yeah, that's fun, right?
- 9:46Like it having a slick track that's, you know, tough,
- 9:49challenging, there's, you know, a couple bumps there.
- 9:52You're running up next to the wall.
- 9:53You also can run a little bit off the wall.
- 9:55You can do just there's options. You can do stuff that is
- 9:59something that is, is special, right?
- 10:02And not to mention, you know, moving this championship race
- 10:05around what it does for our our sport and, and the race track
- 10:10and the facilities, right. Look what happened to Phoenix
- 10:12when they got their championship race there.
- 10:14We did the whole place looks beautiful, right?
- 10:16And it brought a lot of new eyes to that racetrack.
- 10:20Same thing will, will probably happen in Miami, right?
- 10:23I'm, I'm sure they're going to look at ways to to make the
- 10:27experience even better. And, and if it moves around from
- 10:30there, wherever it goes, I think it'll have the same effect.
- 10:33So it's a lot of great things that that happened with us.
- 10:37And it was also announced that facility upgrades are coming 2
- 10:41Homestead Miami Speedway ahead of the upcoming championship
- 10:44race between the garages, the rest of the infield, or even the
- 10:48state of the asphalt itself. Especially considering that you
- 10:50and the rest of NASCAR were just there not that long ago.
- 10:53What is the one aspect of Homestead Miami Speed the
- 10:56Speedway that you would like to see upgraded ahead of the
- 10:59championship race? Oh man, I don't know.
- 11:05I don't know off the top of my head.
- 11:08It's different for a driver sometimes to be commenting on
- 11:11that because I don't get the full fan experience.
- 11:14You know what I mean? Like, I don't, I'm not out there
- 11:17watching the race as a fan. I'm in the car, right?
- 11:20So I don't, I don't, I'm not showing up with my family
- 11:22looking for parking. I'm not like maybe that's an
- 11:24issue. I don't know if it is or not,
- 11:26right? I don't know what it's like
- 11:27getting tickets, what it's like trying to find your seats, what
- 11:30it's like trying to get good food.
- 11:32I don't see all that, you know, what's the garage experience
- 11:36like? I I don't, I can't comment on it
- 11:40because it's just different for me being inside the the car or
- 11:44inside the sport. Is there a track that
- 11:46absolutely, positively needs renovations before they're
- 11:50awarded championship race? Couple of them.
- 11:55A couple, yeah, but but the majority have kept up.
- 11:58With the times, and not all of them, but a few of them have.
- 12:01Would Texas be one of them? I mean, Texas is one of the
- 12:07biggest facilities we go to, right?
- 12:09I mean, there was a time there's a ridiculous amount of people
- 12:12there. And they had a good crowd this
- 12:13week. And yeah, they got the suites,
- 12:16the condos, they got all, they got the stuff, you know, if
- 12:19you've been there, but they got a lot of stuff there.
- 12:21But when it comes to the racing surface itself, would would that
- 12:24be something that needs maybe an upgraded track reconfig again?
- 12:28I think it's starting to come into its own.
- 12:30It's getting better, you know, and we've seen that.
- 12:33So you know, if you're going to go out there and start lobbying
- 12:35for a track reconfiguration, know that you're investing not
- 12:39only money, but you're investing years before it's going to be a
- 12:41good race, right. Repays don't don't typically do
- 12:45it every now and again. They they do it right and I
- 12:47don't even know what they do to do it right because it doesn't
- 12:50seem to be the same everywhere. But you know, they've the
- 12:53investment of time into the resurface and the
- 12:58reconfiguration of Texas for it to be where it is now took I
- 13:02don't know how many years since they paved that, you know, and
- 13:04now at least it's like there's some decent racing, right?
- 13:07I mean, I watched all three races just this weekend.
- 13:11It's it's fine. Like I think there's there's
- 13:14racing, there's passing, you know, there's other tracks that
- 13:18are worse in my opinion. I think it's not that bad.
- 13:21At the beginning, you said that the industry in this port is
- 13:24changing. How do you feel it's going to be
- 13:29a team structure to the end of the year when you're retailing
- 13:32the the tracks and you're going to Las Vegas and they're they're
- 13:34going to Miami and then on the track, how do you feel this
- 13:37going to be? I mean, I think you like, like I
- 13:40said earlier, I think it's just going to be a good thing for the
- 13:42sport, right? And I think for the fans it's
- 13:44good. And for us, we'll have to figure
- 13:46it out, right, as race teams will figure out how to do it.
- 13:48The schedule is always changing and evolving.
- 13:51And, you know, at a point earlier someone brought up,
- 13:54right, but what's the playoffs look like in two years or next
- 13:57year? We're not even 100% sure yet.
- 14:00So it's hard to, you know, say exactly what things are going to
- 14:04look like. But we know at least the final
- 14:06race will be in in Miami next year.
- 14:09And yeah, I'm looking forward to it.
