- 0:11Sometimes all you need is a different perspective or a
- 0:15little bit of guidance, which is exactly why Bumble has launched
- 0:18its new coaching hub. This update offers support and
- 0:21tips from experts, and my friends are loving it so far.
- 0:25For the love of love, give Bumble another shot.
- 0:28Hi everyone, welcome to Mini Scroll, the daily Internet
- 0:33culture podcast bringing you the biggest stories from social
- 0:36media, the creator economy and the digital space.
- 0:39Every Monday through Thursday and sometimes Fridays.
- 0:42I'm your host, Lauren Meissner, the founder of the youth digital
- 0:46media brand Centennial World. Welcome back to Mini Scroll,
- 0:50everyone. OK, so I needed to put a picture
- 0:52for you guys of mine and Annabelle's Halloween costumes.
- 0:56We were Addison Rae and Charlie XCX on the sweat tour.
- 0:59It was the most work appropriate Charlie and Addison vibes that
- 1:04we could find and I think we did pretty well.
- 1:06And honestly, we actually didn't need to worry about being work
- 1:09appropriate because the Halloween party at our office,
- 1:12this was actually insane. Nobody was concerned about what
- 1:16they were wearing in the best way.
- 1:18It was like a lot of fun and people were going so hard.
- 1:21It was actually wild. It was really fun.
- 1:24Anyways, before I get into it, Please remember to rate, review
- 1:27and subscribe. Please Spotify star rate US.
- 1:30We're trying to get to 1000 Spotify star ratings by the end
- 1:32of the year. The first thing that I wanted to
- 1:34talk about, it's not really a story, but it's an addition to
- 1:37my Billie Eilish story on Friday.
- 1:39So you guys know, we just moved offices.
- 1:41It was a chaotic 24 hours. So the Billie Eilish story, I
- 1:45literally saw it right before I started recording.
- 1:47So I just popped it in there. It was a very short story and I
- 1:50didn't see this part of it. And a lot of you guys let me
- 1:53know that my story wasn't fully complete.
- 1:55So here is an addition to Friday's story because I didn't
- 1:59have a lot of time to prep. So I really just told you guys
- 2:01like what I saw, what I knew to be fact in the moment.
- 2:04So this is from People magazine quote, Eilish put her own money
- 2:08where her mouth is just moments before giving her speech again,
- 2:11she gave a speech about how, you know, she was addressing
- 2:14billionaires in the audience saying there's a lot of people
- 2:17here that have more money than me.
- 2:18If you're a billionaire, why are you a billionaire?
- 2:20Give away your money. So this is continuing the quote.
- 2:22Stephen Colbert, who introduced the Birds of a Feather singer,
- 2:25shared the news that she had donated $11.5 million from her
- 2:29recent tour. He said, also, I have the
- 2:31privilege of breaking a little news tonight.
- 2:33Thank you, Billy, for allowing me to do this.
- 2:34It's extraordinary. Billy Eilish will be donating
- 2:37proceeds from her Hit Me Hard and software to support
- 2:40organizations, projects and voices dedicated to food equity,
- 2:43climate justice, reducing carbon pollution and combating the
- 2:46climate crisis. That donation, ladies and
- 2:49gentlemen, will be $11.5 million and apparently and obviously,
- 2:52OK, like us looking at celebrity net worths, it's not always
- 2:56totally accurate, but apparently her net worth is around $50
- 2:58million. So $11.5 million of a $50
- 3:01million net worth is a sizable donation.
- 3:04OK, the first official story that I have for you guys, this
- 3:07is so a niche and it's not even really viral, but I actually
- 3:11think it will go viral soon. My friend Crystal who runs Z
- 3:14feed, she sent it to me and she was like, this is so obscure and
- 3:16so mini scroll coded you have to cover it.
- 3:19And when I watched it, I was like, I totally agree.
- 3:21So this Australian creator Midori Collusion, that's what
- 3:25her handle is, is building a cult following at the moment for
- 3:28calling out what she is calling trash click bait travel articles
- 3:33about Americans going abroad, but specifically ones that are
- 3:38published on Business Insider. This is so niche.
- 3:42Welcome back to Keys, we've got another one.
- 3:44If you're new here, I love reading these trash Business
- 3:46Insider travel articles so you don't have to.
- 3:48And today we've got 6 mistakes you should never make on a
- 3:51cruise according to etiquette experts.
- 3:53I think they've tried to make it seem niche by pegging it to a
- 3:56cruise and referring to experts, but the way I read it is these
- 4:00are 6 things no human should ever do anywhere at any time.
- 4:04And if you don't know this shit, you're a fucking lowlife.
- 4:06So this creator has been posting content like this here and there
- 4:09over the past few months, but she's gaining particular
- 4:12traction at the moment after she discovered that Business Insider
- 4:15had published 48 articles written by the same writer about
- 4:21this writers single two week euro trip that she took back in
- 4:262022. So over the weekend, Midori
- 4:29Collusion started a playlist on TikTok where she's going to
- 4:32recap this writer's euro trip in sequential order in a 19 part
- 4:37series. And if you think about the click
- 4:39bait articles that would be published, right, they're not
- 4:41telling you the trip in sequential order.
- 4:43So this girl has read all 48 articles and has basically put
- 4:47together the timeline of this writer's trip and like
- 4:51everything that happened in what she believes to be sequential
- 4:54order. It's going to be so good.
- 4:56Yeah. I did it.
- 4:58I read all 48 articles inspired by this, particularly ham fisted
- 5:032 week euro trip taken in 2020. 2 all published.
- 5:06By Business Insider over the past three years with no sign of
- 5:08letting up. Published completely out of
- 5:11sequence, of course, But I've unpicked the threads.
- 5:14I've unfolded this into a linear narrative that I proposed to
- 5:17retell over 19 parts. This trip is my muse and this is
- 5:21my opus. We're going to go on an odyssey
- 5:24across 6 cities. We're going to spend 20% of the
- 5:27trip in transit, and we're going to make more mistakes than you
- 5:30ever thought possible for life for.
- 5:32More so that's all I have right now for this story, but you guys
- 5:35need to watch the space because I feel like it could really blow
- 5:37up. It's so niche, it's so obscure.
- 5:39It's the exact type of content that Internet users really like
- 5:43grab on to because it's kind of harmless.
- 5:46It's kind of snarky. It's kind of insane and it can
- 5:50absolutely become one of those in jokes that people who are
- 5:53following along jump in on. So I think watch this space.
- 5:56I fear she's going to blow up for this series.
- 5:58OK, the next story that I have for you guys is I'm going to
- 6:01recap the Huda Love Island racism scandal that's been going
- 6:05on over the past couple of days. So Love Island breakout star
- 6:08Huda Mustafa is facing major scandal after a live stream she
- 6:12did last week where she laughed at a racist slur directed
- 6:15towards her fellow Love Island castmates Alondria.
- 6:19Throughout the season, Alandria and Shelly, another cast member,
- 6:23faced racism from the fandom and online trolls, and a lot of it
- 6:27allegedly came from Hoodies fan base.
- 6:30This racism intensified when Huda said she felt bullied on
- 6:33the show during the reunion and fans pointed to Alandria and
- 6:37Shelly as like quote UN quote Mean Girls that bullied Huda.
- 6:41So this is directly from yahoo.com quote.
- 6:44Huda said that after seeing clips back from the show, there
- 6:46were moments she felt bullied, though she did regret the
- 6:49cursing and the name calling. This led to the confrontation
- 6:52that fans had seemingly been waiting for when Andy Cohen
- 6:55asked Huda to clarify when she felt bullied because he didn't
- 6:59see it as a viewer. But why didn't you do the post
- 7:02that Alandria asked you to? Like I was doing so much outside
- 7:06of that. Like I didn't know what to say
- 7:07in that moment, 'cause I was dealing with so much.
- 7:09I wanted to address more than just that.
- 7:11Truly wish you would have just prioritized that moment to just
- 7:13address the racism and the bullying towards me and Shelley
- 7:17since that was spewed out the most.
- 7:18That hurt. I I was getting hated on as
- 7:21well. Very I.
- 7:21Get that? But your face was not plastered
- 7:23on George Floyd's body. I didn't mind what I told you
- 7:26that this was as a result of that.
- 7:29Bad either, I don't want to explain.
- 7:31It in the airport like that, it's hurt it.
- 7:34Hurt. OK so Fast forward to this week
- 7:37and Hooda was on a live stream with her boyfriend when an
- 7:39anonymous caller used the N word about Alandria.
- 7:43In the clip, Hooda and her boyfriend appear to laugh at the
- 7:45slur before hanging up. Now, the backlash for how they
- 7:49handled this situation was immediate, and Hooda was quickly
- 7:53dropped from her mastership with Hooda Beauty.
- 7:55Hooda addressed the incident in a series of Instagram stories,
- 7:59saying that they couldn't hear properly what the person was
- 8:01saying. Quote Also the laughter because
- 8:04it was awkward, she wrote. It was awkward and
- 8:06inappropriate. Whoever said it is in the wrong.
- 8:08Alondria responded saying quote. Words like that carry
- 8:11generations of pain, and pretending otherwise only keeps
- 8:14the cycle going. Well, I anticipate this will
- 8:16result in surface level apologies that will fade in a
- 8:19few days. I'd like to transform this
- 8:21moment into something actionable.
- 8:23And then she called on the live stream participants and their
- 8:26followers to, quote, demonstrate A genuine commitment to anti
- 8:29racism by donating to organizations and foundations
- 8:32dedicated to educating and uplifting this community, such
- 8:35as UNCF and AACP and or the Thurgood Marshall College Fund.
- 8:41And then Hoda released a second statement and apology a day
- 8:44later. Quote, I want to take this
- 8:46moment to more fully take accountability for my actions.
- 8:49I want to be clear that I do not condone or tolerate anyone who
- 8:52uses such language. And I strongly encourage the
- 8:54individual responsible to reflect deeply on their words
- 8:58and the harm they've caused. And then she did close up the
- 9:00statement saying she will make a personal donation to the N
- 9:04Double ACP and encouraged others to do the same.
- 9:07So yeah, one of the major points to come out of this is everyone
- 9:10is praising Hooda Beauty for taking action so quickly and
- 9:14being so steadfast in this, which like, sure, OK, yes.
- 9:18Is the bar on the floor? Like probably I understand why
- 9:22the bar is on the floor for brands like this when it comes
- 9:24to ambassadorships, and I get it.
- 9:26I understand why. But I do feel the conversation
- 9:29around Hooda Beauty now is turning into, oh, like this is
- 9:33the positive we can take away from this situation.
- 9:37There's no positive that we can take away from racism like this.
- 9:41But us, I think labeling will let you know, Oh my God, like,
- 9:44look, Hooda Beauty is setting this precedent.
- 9:46Like this is a positive we can take away from it.
- 9:49I don't know. I don't know.
- 9:50I, I just, I worry about that messaging.
- 9:53OK. The last word that I have for
- 9:54you guys, I was trying to find like, interesting celebrity
- 9:58Halloween stories. There weren't many, but I am
- 10:00sure you guys have all seen this.
- 10:02Julia Fox is going viral for her very controversial Halloween
- 10:08costume and she has defended it. So for a Halloween party in New
- 10:11York City, Julia Fox dressed up as Jackie Kennedy.
- 10:14She was wearing this blood soaked pink suit, recreating
- 10:18what the former First Lady of the United States wore on the
- 10:21day that her husband, President John F Kennedy, was
- 10:24assassinated. As you can imagine, the costume
- 10:27sparked many strong reactions online with tons of people
- 10:31calling her disrespectful, attention seeking, and that she
- 10:34was glorifying political violence.
- 10:36Following the backlash, Julia wrote this on Instagram.
- 10:40Quote I'm dressed as Jackie Kennedy in the pink suit, not as
- 10:43a costume but as a statement. When her husband was
- 10:46assassinated, she refused to change out of her blood stained
- 10:49clothes, saying I want them to see what they've done.
- 10:52The image of the delicate pink suit splattered with blood is
- 10:55one of the most haunting juxtapositions in modern
- 10:57history. Beauty and horror, poise and
- 11:00devastation. Her decision not to change
- 11:02clothes, even after being encouraged to, was an act of
- 11:05extraordinary bravery. It was performance, protest, and
- 11:08mourning all at once. A woman weaponizing image and
- 11:11grace to expose brutality. It's about trauma, power, and
- 11:15how femininity itself is a form of resistance.
- 11:18Long live Jackie O. I've actually seen a lot of
- 11:21people say that her statement about this changed their minds
- 11:24about the costume. I don't know.
- 11:26Let me know what you guys think about this costume.
- 11:28I'm not sure where I land on it yet.
- 11:30I do feel like it's an interesting time in politics and
- 11:36culture to be making a statement like this.
- 11:38But maybe this is the perfect time to move making a statement
- 11:40like this. And I also do wonder if you have
- 11:43to over explain your costume this much and the intention
- 11:46behind it, like maybe it just didn't quite land.
- 11:48I don't know. What do you guys think?
- 11:50But Julia Fox, she does love to draw up discourse.
- 11:53And that's what this is doing because most people across the
- 11:55board don't seem to have a very solid opinion on this.
- 11:59It hasn't actually been. I mean, it was initially very
- 12:02divisive. And then when she explained it,
- 12:03people were like, oh, OK, I can see we're going for there.
- 12:06I can appreciate that. And now I feel like a lot of
- 12:09people are kind of sitting where I am, where it's like, I need to
- 12:12think about this more. I'm not totally sure, OK.
- 12:14But I did want to give a mention to some notable celebrity
- 12:17Halloween moments. First of all, Lily Allen as
- 12:20Madeline. That was insane.
- 12:23If you guys don't know the lore behind Madeline and Lily Allen
- 12:27and why that matters, go listen to High Stakes.
- 12:29I think it was just last week they did a breakdown on her
- 12:32divorce from David Harbour and her album and kind of Madeline
- 12:36is like one of the songs about his cheating.
- 12:38So yeah, she dressed up as the doll Madeline and then Demi
- 12:41Lovato went as Pooh Lovato, which is iconic.
- 12:44I'm so happy she did this. It was so funny.
- 12:47Anyways, guys, that's it for Mini Scroll today.
- 12:49Thank you so much for listening. I love you guys.
- 12:51Please remember to rate, review and subscribe.
- 12:53Please Spotify star rate US and I will talk to you guys
- 12:57tomorrow. Bye.
