- 0:01SPEAKER_00: You there, adventurer?
- 0:02SPEAKER_00: Yes, you.
- 0:04SPEAKER_00: Do you desire knowledge of immense worlds and arcane power?
- 0:07SPEAKER_00: A codex of untold stories and lore?
- 0:10SPEAKER_00: Or perhaps simply easy listening for your daily commute?
- 0:14SPEAKER_00: Then feast your eyes, or more accurately, yes, upon Dungeon Pedia.
- 0:19SPEAKER_00: Shit's about to get nerdy in here.
- 0:48SPEAKER_04: Taylor Peasley.
- 0:49SPEAKER_03: And I'm Travis Peasley.
- 0:50SPEAKER_03: Okay, even the even the Peasley, we the we we were supposed to be back to the regular order of names this week, but even the last name kind of messed me up for a minute.
- 0:59SPEAKER_05: This has been my last name for four years now.
- 1:03SPEAKER_03: I know, but in that time, I haven't had I haven't like listened to you introduce yourself that way that much.
- 1:11SPEAKER_03: And so it's still it still got me like I mean that's fair, you know.
- 1:16SPEAKER_03: Fair enough.
- 1:17SPEAKER_03: And I keep I keep thinking when I hear something like different, I keep thinking that like because I'm like terrified, I'm gonna like miss my cue and it's gonna be all like messed up.
- 1:26SPEAKER_03: So then like if I hear like one syllable slightly off, I'm like, oh no, I've I've done something wrong.
- 1:33SPEAKER_05: Like I'm like, I've done something wrong, and Taylor has to be like eh, you know, nope, cut oh and for the most part, whenever things go wrong, I'm just like especially when we're already live, I'm just like whatever, you know.
- 1:47SPEAKER_05: Just let it just like we're we're if I need to re-record it for the for the VOD or for the audio version, I can.
- 1:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and it's like we're already, you know, we're already we're already here, and also like, you know, obligatory.
- 2:00SPEAKER_03: Like, I know I talked about this last week, but like, you know, I've seen a lot I've seen similar or much, much worse levels of unprofessionalism from like, you know, people who have like, you know, either like they're straight up like newscasters or whatever, or they're people who like have a lot of uh a big following on their podcast.
- 2:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah, who have like a lot of uh they should have the you know the the time and the the resources to make sure that everything's like you know but yeah today this has been a uh quite a week.
- 2:35SPEAKER_05: I had some trouble with the editing on everything, but we finally got it all figured out.
- 2:39SPEAKER_01: Uh yeah, I don't know what was going up with that nonsense, but just got fixed.
- 2:45SPEAKER_03: Wouldn't I was gonna say wouldn't be a you know wouldn't be a especially return to forum without audio problems?
- 2:51SPEAKER_03: Without without random, without random echoey audio, audio issues like you know just issues in general just in posts, you know.
- 3:03SPEAKER_01: Yeah, dude, that's listen, sometimes it'd be that way.
- 3:07SPEAKER_01: You know, speaking of issues though, our topic today actually has a lot of issues.
- 3:16SPEAKER_01: So many issues.
- 3:18SPEAKER_03: Are we sat here for like 12 hours while we talk about every single edition of Dragon Magazine ever?
- 3:24SPEAKER_01: Uh no, although that could be a very interesting new stream-a-thon idea.
- 3:32SPEAKER_03: Yeah, 24 hour, 24-hour stream where we just we just read every dragon magazine ever and then critique it.
- 3:42SPEAKER_03: That would be like that would turn it into a 48-hour one.
- 3:45SPEAKER_03: Yes, for real.
- 3:47SPEAKER_05: Oh we can take turns and take na taking naps.
- 3:51SPEAKER_01: Take naps.
- 3:52SPEAKER_01: Hey, as long as there's someone on stream at all times, it's not against the Twitch TOS.
- 3:57SPEAKER_01: So so uh today's episode was actually uh suggested by Wizard in our Discord because I was not a hundred percent sure what I was going to actually research.
- 4:08SPEAKER_01: I was looking up a few things, didn't know if there was quite enough information, and then Wizard dropped the suggestion of sigil.
- 4:16SPEAKER_01: Or as it is technically pronounced, sigil.
- 4:20SPEAKER_05: I remember that from my planes episode, and I still hate it, and I still refuse to acknowledge it.
- 4:26SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I um oh man.
- 4:29SPEAKER_01: I also am just going to refuse to acknowledge it past this point.
- 4:32SPEAKER_03: You better, you better have some you better, your notes better have some accompanying like gifs for vision.
- 4:39SPEAKER_05: I I hate that.
- 4:42SPEAKER_01: I do too.
- 4:43SPEAKER_03: If I if I could time you out like in the actual podcast, you can time me out of the Twitch chat, I guess.
- 4:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but I can't time you out in the podcast, so here I get you you know you just put down like a red card or whatever, and then I have to mute my mic for 30 seconds.
- 5:02SPEAKER_05: Yeah, just like hold on, hold on.
- 5:04SPEAKER_05: Dude, if we had a goodbye.
- 5:09SPEAKER_05: Oh no, oh no, there's two of me for some reason.
- 5:12SPEAKER_03: I've been replaced, I've been replaced by Taylor.
- 5:16SPEAKER_05: I would prefer not to for there to be two of me.
- 5:21SPEAKER_03: In you know, it's insert joke about talking to yourself.
- 5:24SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 5:25SPEAKER_05: I yeah, well, I do that all too frequently as well.
- 5:29SPEAKER_03: Hey, listen, if you want to have good conversation, right, you gotta you gotta talk to someone who is as intelligent as you are, right?
- 5:38SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean fair.
- 5:39SPEAKER_03: That's that's that's how I justify it to myself.
- 5:42SPEAKER_02: Oh, that's fair.
- 5:44SPEAKER_05: Okay, sigil.
- 5:45SPEAKER_05: Sigil.
- 5:46SPEAKER_05: So I will not be pronouncing it as Sigil.
- 5:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm so sorry.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: I don't like it.
- 5:51SPEAKER_03: Like it's like I recognize that the council has made a decision, but given it's a stupid ass decision, I've elected to ignore it.
- 5:59SPEAKER_05: I I'm 90% sure that this was not an Ed Greenwood because I'm pretty sure it's Planescape, but I'm sorry, Ed Greenwood, I'm not pronouncing it yes.
- 6:07SPEAKER_01: This is in the uh Planescape uh setting.
- 6:12SPEAKER_01: So uh we are going to be spending actually a majority of our time in second edition because that's where most of the information comes from, and not a lot changes throughout.
- 6:23SPEAKER_01: Back in today.
- 6:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 6:25SPEAKER_01: Um so its first appearance was from the Planescape campaign setting, which was a box set that comprised of like four different books.
- 6:37SPEAKER_01: And that was back in ninety-two.
- 6:45SPEAKER_05: Um I don't know, I didn't do the I didn't do the research this week.
- 6:49SPEAKER_01: Well, I had the date, and then apparently I deleted it while trying to fix an error.
- 6:53SPEAKER_03: So hey, uh 1992.
- 6:56SPEAKER_03: It was it was a it was a it was a year.
- 7:00SPEAKER_03: Oh, I'm sorry, 1994.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: 1994.
- 7:02SPEAKER_05: That was that was also that was also a it was a year.
- 7:06SPEAKER_01: That was two years before I was.
- 7:07SPEAKER_01: Two years off two years off, not days, holy shit.
- 7:10SPEAKER_05: Two days off.
- 7:11SPEAKER_01: Two days off.
- 7:12SPEAKER_01: Oh, but this is gonna be a fun one.
- 7:14SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 7:17SPEAKER_01: All right, so sigil is at the very center of the Outlands, uh, which was covered by Taylor during her uh whole planes episode.
- 7:29SPEAKER_01: It has various different names that it is called.
- 7:33SPEAKER_01: Um, it's called the Cage, the City of Doors, and less commonly because literally only mentioned in fourth edition, the City of Secrets.
- 7:44SPEAKER_03: That's kind of a you know what uh I was gonna grimace at fourth edition, but like that's kind of a baller name.
- 7:51SPEAKER_01: Oh, just you'll grimace at 4th edition here in a little bit, trust me.
- 7:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, but that is kind of a baller name, though.
- 7:57SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 7:58SPEAKER_01: So just a quick brush-up on the outlands, real quick.
- 8:02SPEAKER_01: Um, as far as like the Great Wheel of the Outer Plains cosmology, it's the outlands is basically the center of that.
- 8:09SPEAKER_01: It connects all other outer planes together and is like the truest of true neutral that you can get.
- 8:20SPEAKER_05: Oh my gosh, Hades.
- 8:24SPEAKER_03: Hades has opinions.
- 8:26SPEAKER_01: I also have opinions, but don't worry.
- 8:28SPEAKER_03: I think he's a you know what?
- 8:30SPEAKER_03: I think he's a I think he's a Sigle Truther.
- 8:32SPEAKER_03: I think he's mad that we're not pronouncing it.
- 8:34SPEAKER_05: Uh absolutely not.
- 8:36SPEAKER_05: My my son would never Yeah, no, absolutely not.
- 8:41SPEAKER_01: He raised him better than that.
- 8:42SPEAKER_05: I raised him better than that.
- 8:43SPEAKER_01: There's just no way.
- 8:44SPEAKER_01: The Outlands is an infinite plane, but has a definitive center, which is Sigil, obviously.
- 8:54SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 8:55SPEAKER_01: It has gate towns that are just kind of throughout like its quote unquote edges, despite the fact that it's kind of infinite.
- 9:04SPEAKER_01: Um, gate towns shockingly have gates that open up into the rest of the outer plains.
- 9:10SPEAKER_05: Yeah, no, I mean it's kind of in there.
- 9:12SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:13SPEAKER_05: At the very least, if you spend any time in the Planescape setting, yeah, you kind of figure it out.
- 9:19SPEAKER_01: We have I spent the last week in that setting.
- 9:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it's like don't don't don't sweat the, you know, don't sweat the details, it's fine.
- 9:26SPEAKER_05: You know, and I don't know if you're gonna get into this as much as you did when you were researching it, but the planescape setting has so much weird specific lingo and slang.
- 9:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
- 9:41SPEAKER_05: Like you need a you need a glossary, so like you do, actually.
- 9:45SPEAKER_01: I actually do have that uh prepared for you.
- 9:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 9:51SPEAKER_01: I didn't put it in my notes because I just didn't want to clog them up.
- 9:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, basically.
- 9:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 9:59SPEAKER_01: So um let's jump into that just right quick here.
- 10:04SPEAKER_05: Oh boy.
- 10:05SPEAKER_01: Just some terms you need to know.
- 10:08SPEAKER_01: It does have its own whole language, basically, which is called the can't.
- 10:15SPEAKER_03: Ah, okay, like like thieves can't or whatever.
- 10:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah, basically.
- 10:20SPEAKER_01: Um, so there is the I believe that is Adlecove, which is a not particularly friendly way to call someone an idiot.
- 10:32SPEAKER_01: An Adle Cove.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 10:34SPEAKER_01: As in, did you hear what that Attle Cove wizard wanted us to do?
- 10:38SPEAKER_01: Dang.
- 10:40SPEAKER_03: That sounds like the name of a place, not gonna lie.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: It does.
- 10:43SPEAKER_03: Like, oh hey, I'm from Adle Cove, you know.
- 10:46SPEAKER_05: Yeah, if somebody told me that they were from Adle Cove, I'd be like, okay, so where on the coast is that?
- 10:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's an ad that's an adult an adult covian right there.
- 10:57SPEAKER_01: And then they would almost always respond in some fun, bad way, probably calling you a Burk.
- 11:06SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah.
- 11:07SPEAKER_05: So do you ever call Burk?
- 11:09SPEAKER_01: Ugh.
- 11:10SPEAKER_01: Which a Burk is a fool.
- 11:13SPEAKER_01: Uh they do use that term, especially for someone who got himself like into a situation where he shouldn't have even been to begin with.
- 11:20SPEAKER_03: Oh, so it's I like the multiple specific ways to call somebody stupid.
- 11:26SPEAKER_03: Like, yes, yeah, they like it's like several.
- 11:29SPEAKER_03: Here's a here's a specific way to say this is a stupid person who did XYZ, or like this is a stupid person who whatever, whatever, you know, you got the you got the spectrum.
- 11:41SPEAKER_03: And I feel like whenever you have a language like that, there's like 10 different ways to call someone an idiot or to like insult somebody's mother, and then you're like, Oh, uh, what do you, you know, what do you guys call like the like a bathroom or something?
- 11:57SPEAKER_03: And they're like, oh yeah, we just call it a bathroom.
- 11:59SPEAKER_03: Yeah, pretty much.
- 12:00SPEAKER_01: Like, oh yeah, that's just a shitter.
- 12:02SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's just the that's just the shitter, you know.
- 12:05SPEAKER_01: Um they might also call you the uh not the but a clueless.
- 12:12SPEAKER_01: Which uh means folks who just don't get it, usually primes.
- 12:19SPEAKER_05: I'm guessing people who uh only spend their time or and are from the Primaterial plane.
- 12:25SPEAKER_03: Uh yes, because that sounds like almost an equivalent of like a normie.
- 12:29SPEAKER_03: Yes, I call it someone a normie.
- 12:32SPEAKER_01: I think it's the same vibe.
- 12:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 12:35SPEAKER_01: So if you use this on someone who's actually from like any of the uh like planes other than the prime, it's likely to cause a fight.
- 12:45SPEAKER_01: Right, yeah.
- 12:46SPEAKER_01: Because you're basically calling them a primer, which to them is an insult.
- 12:51SPEAKER_03: Right, yeah.
- 12:51SPEAKER_05: Because it's like, why would you want to be from the prime?
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 12:54SPEAKER_03: I know, right?
- 12:55SPEAKER_03: Those those those we those weirdos who spend all their time on the prime material plane, you know.
- 13:01SPEAKER_01: Uh let's see, I'm just uh picking a few of these fun ones because there's quite a lot.
- 13:06SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 13:06SPEAKER_01: Um, there's barmy.
- 13:09SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 13:10SPEAKER_01: Uh those are the insane folk.
- 13:13SPEAKER_03: So we've got we've got words, we've got we've got insane, stupid in a very specific way, stupid in a less specific way, and then like normies.
- 13:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 13:24SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 13:25SPEAKER_01: Nice.
- 13:26SPEAKER_01: Uh then you have basher, which is just a neutral reference to a person.
- 13:31SPEAKER_03: Oh, it's like calling someone like a bloke or like whatever more or less.
- 13:37SPEAKER_03: I I I I'm finding all these like they uh some of these have the same vibe as so many like real-world, you know, kind of slang terms.
- 13:44SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 13:46SPEAKER_01: Um, there is what they call a bob, uh, which is uh basically the business of cheating someone, whether it's you know, of their cash, honor, trust, uh, what have you.
- 13:59SPEAKER_03: Oh, so would it be like, oh yeah, this this dude that I picked up this job off of from totally bobbed me?
- 14:06SPEAKER_01: Yeah, or uh, you know, I totally just like bobbed some leatherhead the other day.
- 14:11SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 14:12SPEAKER_03: See, you know what?
- 14:13SPEAKER_03: I'm I'm picking it up on it.
- 14:15SPEAKER_03: Like, I could I think I could I could move out there.
- 14:18SPEAKER_03: I could make it out, I could blend in with the local culture, you know.
- 14:21SPEAKER_01: I can totally which just going to uh continue with the different ways to call someone an idiot.
- 14:27SPEAKER_01: Uh you have leatherhead, which is a DOT or a dull or thick-witted person.
- 14:35SPEAKER_01: Yeah, very and this one specifically says use it to call somebody an idiot.
- 14:39SPEAKER_03: All right, very, very different.
- 14:41SPEAKER_03: You gotta watch out though.
- 14:42SPEAKER_03: That's very different from Leatherface.
- 14:44SPEAKER_03: That's a different that's that is a different thing.
- 14:48SPEAKER_01: There there are so so many good ones.
- 14:51SPEAKER_01: Um, there's a garnish, uh, which is a bribe.
- 14:55SPEAKER_03: Oh, okay.
- 14:56SPEAKER_03: That you know what?
- 14:57SPEAKER_03: That that that I think that you know, you're like, oh well, you know, get a little get a little garnish on there, you know.
- 15:04SPEAKER_03: So like if you're I feel like there's a specific real world.
- 15:08SPEAKER_05: Man, if you're a corrupt chef, you gotta get so much confusion.
- 15:12SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah.
- 15:14SPEAKER_03: Hit him with the garnish.
- 15:16SPEAKER_05: Like, wait, what do you mean the parsley or the cash?
- 15:20SPEAKER_01: Like which which garnish do you mean?
- 15:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, or both.
- 15:24SPEAKER_03: Or both.
- 15:25SPEAKER_03: Or both.
- 15:26SPEAKER_03: Or like a like a gold, like a gold leaf garnish, you know.
- 15:31SPEAKER_01: So um I'm just gonna have you guys guess on this one because I'm sure you can figure it out.
- 15:36SPEAKER_01: Um give the rope.
- 15:40SPEAKER_03: Um hang someone.
- 15:42SPEAKER_05: To end someone?
- 15:44SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 15:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 15:47SPEAKER_05: I was hoping.
- 15:49SPEAKER_03: I was thinking either like either either a specifically hanging someone or a general term for killed, or maybe like string someone along.
- 16:00SPEAKER_03: Like okay, yeah, that's that's you know, like a like a oh, I gave that, I gave that, you know, that I gave that that I gave that wench from the bar, I gave her the rope, you know, which I guess you you could say that if you you know what you know what I mean though, like yeah, bringing someone along.
- 16:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we're discussing very bad language.
- 16:19SPEAKER_03: You shouldn't learn these bad words.
- 16:23SPEAKER_01: So in uh that case, uh she would probably be telling you to pike it, which is a useful all-purpose phrase, as in take a short stick and pike it.
- 16:36SPEAKER_03: Oh, I like that a lot.
- 16:37SPEAKER_03: I do too.
- 16:38SPEAKER_03: I do like pike it.
- 16:39SPEAKER_03: Pike it is very good.
- 16:40SPEAKER_03: The same vibe as stick that in your pipe and smoke it, which is one of my favorite things to say.
- 16:45SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I I really do like pike it.
- 16:48SPEAKER_01: It that one is just so good.
- 16:50SPEAKER_01: Uh, then there's a sod, which is an unfortunate or poor soul.
- 16:54SPEAKER_01: This is usually used to show like sympathy for unlucky people or sarcastically.
- 17:01SPEAKER_05: Sod, I think, is kind of like a British slang.
- 17:04SPEAKER_03: I think people say that in real life.
- 17:06SPEAKER_01: I I think so.
- 17:07SPEAKER_01: I don't, I'm not too.
- 17:09SPEAKER_05: Okay, I might not be accurate in it being British, but I know that it's slang.
- 17:13SPEAKER_01: Let me tell you, I didn't actually come across this uh whole like glossary until like way later.
- 17:20SPEAKER_01: So as I was reading things, I was like, I don't know what any of this fucking means.
- 17:26SPEAKER_01: Like people like it's saying like the cutters and the berks and the barmies and the dark, and I'm like, what the hell?
- 17:34SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 17:35SPEAKER_03: I do feel like that's something that it can be in the right setting, in the right context, it can be really fun.
- 17:41SPEAKER_03: But I feel like sometimes it can be a little bit like it can be a little it can be a little i it impenetrable in a way because like like if you like load up a video game for the first time, you know, and it's like a fantasy or maybe sci-fi, you know, uh very, very different setting from you know the real earth that we live in or other pre-established, you know, conventions, and then they're throwing all this slang at you, and you're like, what's going on?
- 18:08SPEAKER_01: And then you kind of have just have to piece it together by context clues.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 18:12SPEAKER_03: And then you're you're trying to do that while you're trying to figure out like other expositional things, you know, like who the, you know, who the the different factions are, what's the deal with all the characters?
- 18:25SPEAKER_03: I feel like sometimes it it can be a little impenetrable because you're like, I don't even know what's going on.
- 18:31SPEAKER_03: And now I gotta figure out now I gotta figure out what uh what it means to to to pike somebody, you know.
- 18:38SPEAKER_01: To pike somebody.
- 18:39SPEAKER_03: That sounds like something else, but you know.
- 18:42SPEAKER_01: And then uh just the last one that I'll cover here, just because I'm not gonna go through all these, but uh this one is also uh really good and one of my favorites, and that is bone box.
- 18:55SPEAKER_03: What's a bone box?
- 18:57SPEAKER_03: I'm not gonna I'm not I'm not gonna say anything.
- 19:01SPEAKER_05: What's a bone box?
- 19:03SPEAKER_01: A bone box is the mouth.
- 19:06SPEAKER_01: I mean named because of its teeth, fangs, or what have you.
- 19:09SPEAKER_01: So basically it's a way of telling someone to shut up, like stop bridling your bone box.
- 19:13SPEAKER_03: Okay, that's that's that's definitely the direction that my that I took that.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: Same.
- 19:20SPEAKER_03: I guess I guess, you know, I guess my initial thought would still apply if someone were to be like, hey, I'll you know, let me, you know, why don't you why don't you come to the back room and I'll show you what my bone box can do?
- 19:36SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 19:37SPEAKER_01: Well, you could use it in that sense, since it means the mouth.
- 19:43SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm just you know, that one's a little out there.
- 19:49SPEAKER_05: Is it is it?
- 19:51SPEAKER_05: Well, okay.
- 19:52SPEAKER_05: It it's just wild, it just the right amount of wild.
- 19:58SPEAKER_03: Listen, I'm just saying it it's it's it's a portmanteau.
- 20:00SPEAKER_03: Well, I guess not technically a portmanteau because it's kind of just the two words appended, but but like it's got the word bone and the word box in it.
- 20:09SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 20:10SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 20:14SPEAKER_03: So stop rattling your bone box.
- 20:16SPEAKER_01: I like stop rattling your bone box.
- 20:19SPEAKER_01: So a little bit more uh detail on its location uh specifically.
- 20:24SPEAKER_01: Um, like I said, it is like the center of the outlands and it is balanced, or some say it like floats on a massive spire that some sources say is infinitely tall, which is kind of weird if you think about it, because if it's balancing on top of something that's infinitely tall, then exactly where is it?
- 20:49SPEAKER_03: Don't worry about it.
- 20:51SPEAKER_03: It's turtles all the way down, dog.
- 20:53SPEAKER_01: But that's actually kind of one of the whole things for uh sigil is that it should be impossible to exist right and how it exists, but it exists anyway.
- 21:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, which I think makes perfect sense for what it is, you know.
- 21:12SPEAKER_05: Yeah, and planescape in general.
- 21:14SPEAKER_03: Like it'd be kind of it'd be kind of lame if it was like, oh, it's just like it's just like a city, you know.
- 21:21SPEAKER_03: It's just like a city, it's just it's just out there, you know.
- 21:24SPEAKER_03: It's like you you go through the mountains, you know, you go through the valley, and then it's just there, you know.
- 21:29SPEAKER_03: Like it's gotta be it's gotta be kind of kind of over the top and kind of whimsical, kind of you know, kind of like it doesn't really make sense, but like, you know, it's the outlands, who cares?
- 21:40SPEAKER_05: The the point being that you're not supposed to think too much about it because if you do, then it's lame.
- 21:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:47SPEAKER_01: And it's or it could just drive you mad.
- 21:50SPEAKER_03: That's true.
- 21:51SPEAKER_01: It'll turn you into a barmy.
- 21:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 21:55SPEAKER_03: You gotta you gotta stop thinking you gotta stop thinking like a um like a primer.
- 22:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you got a prime a prime.
- 22:02SPEAKER_01: A prime.
- 22:03SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you gotta stop thinking like a prime, you know.
- 22:05SPEAKER_01: And start thinking more like a cager.
- 22:08SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 22:09SPEAKER_01: A cager is I believe you.
- 22:11SPEAKER_01: A cager is what you know the people within sigil are called.
- 22:16SPEAKER_01: They call themselves cagers because they call the city the cage.
- 22:20SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:21SPEAKER_03: That that tracks.
- 22:22SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: All right.
- 22:23SPEAKER_03: So continuing.
- 22:24SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 22:25SPEAKER_03: That's more that's more.
- 22:26SPEAKER_03: That's I get that.
- 22:28SPEAKER_03: I get the path from those two things more than I do the path from water deep to water Davian.
- 22:33SPEAKER_03: So sure.
- 22:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's no shade.
- 22:37SPEAKER_03: No shade to any water Davians in chat.
- 22:39SPEAKER_05: Well, what do you want them to be called?
- 22:40SPEAKER_05: Waterdeepers.
- 22:42SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 22:44SPEAKER_03: Water, I don't know.
- 22:46SPEAKER_03: I'm just saying, I don't know.
- 22:47SPEAKER_03: Just water Davian is kind of water Davian is wild.
- 22:52SPEAKER_01: Anyway, anyway.
- 22:53SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 22:54SPEAKER_01: You're given this information, you might be saying, okay, then how the hell does anyone get to it?
- 23:00SPEAKER_03: Magic.
- 23:01SPEAKER_03: The train.
- 23:02SPEAKER_01: So um to that, I will say uh one does not simply just walk into sigil.
- 23:08SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 23:10SPEAKER_01: At least not via a front gate.
- 23:13SPEAKER_05: It's through a plane gate.
- 23:15SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 23:16SPEAKER_01: So it cannot be entered by any like magic spells.
- 23:20SPEAKER_01: Um you also can't enter it through the astral plane.
- 23:24SPEAKER_01: Um you can't even spy upon sigil if you're in the astral plane.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 23:29SPEAKER_01: Like it has so many like securities that you just can't get to it.
- 23:37SPEAKER_01: Like plane shift won't work, teleport spells won't work.
- 23:43SPEAKER_01: The only way to get to it is via a gate or a portal that leads to sigil.
- 23:53SPEAKER_01: But these particular portals require keys to open them.
- 23:59SPEAKER_01: Now, what are these keys?
- 24:01SPEAKER_01: Literally anything.
- 24:05SPEAKER_05: It's like the Fay Crossings.
- 24:08SPEAKER_01: Kinda, yeah.
- 24:09SPEAKER_01: Like, for real, anything.
- 24:11SPEAKER_01: Like one portal could require like the tail from a rat, another one could require a very specific scent from a flower.
- 24:20SPEAKER_01: Another one could simply require one to be smiling while they walk through the air that the portal is located.
- 24:27SPEAKER_01: It can be anything.
- 24:29SPEAKER_05: Literally anything.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 24:30SPEAKER_01: So like figuring out what the key is is fairly difficult, I would assume.
- 24:35SPEAKER_03: Yeah, so it's like the it's like the it's like the really off-the-wall um evolution methods for like some Pokemon.
- 24:42SPEAKER_03: Like it's like not about, I'm serious, you've gotta hold your DS upside down.
- 24:46SPEAKER_03: I'm not joking, you know.
- 24:48SPEAKER_01: My god, yeah.
- 24:49SPEAKER_01: Basically.
- 24:51SPEAKER_01: And the thing with these portals is there are thousands, and some actually theorize that there are infinite portals that are like this, and they can exist in any space or frame that is big enough for someone to walk through.
- 25:10SPEAKER_01: So the archway of a door, a window, literally anything.
- 25:18SPEAKER_05: That is the archway of a door, go, and then another one on the other side of the door.
- 25:24SPEAKER_01: Disgusting.
- 25:25SPEAKER_01: And so that could, you know, theoretically, and of course, like, you know, it essentially gives like limitless ways to get to sigil, which is more or less their way of giving the DM like all the freedom in the world to decide how their group is going to get there.
- 25:39SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 25:40SPEAKER_03: And and I would imagine that this isn't necessarily like, even though the the conditions are are very specific, I would imagine it's not unheard of for people to kind of accidentally activate these keys and kind of end up there, you know, like uh topical, like you know, the backrooms or whatever.
- 26:02SPEAKER_03: You just like accidentally smile while you're walking through a doorway, and then suddenly you've clipped into, you know, sigil.
- 26:07SPEAKER_03: You've clipped into sigil, and you're like, whoa.
- 26:10SPEAKER_05: And now a bunch of people are making fun of me.
- 26:13SPEAKER_01: Like you could literally like go to your closet that you have gone to for 20 years, except this time you have a very specific rare flower that somebody gave you in your pocket, and suddenly, boom, you're in sigil.
- 26:25SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 26:28SPEAKER_05: So don't give people rare flowers.
- 26:30SPEAKER_03: See, now I'm like, now I'm looking at all the doorways in my house and I'm like, mmm.
- 26:35SPEAKER_05: I don't trust any of you.
- 26:37SPEAKER_03: I'm scrutinizing, I'm scrutinizing, uh, I'm scrutinizing all of them.
- 26:40SPEAKER_03: I'm like, man, I better not do anything weird when I when I go to like, you know, step into my step into my bedroom or whatever.
- 26:47SPEAKER_03: I gotta make sure I'm taking it at the same angle I always do.
- 26:50SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 26:52SPEAKER_01: That could lead to so many like bad like OCD things happening there.
- 27:01SPEAKER_03: And you know what?
- 27:02SPEAKER_03: And you know what?
- 27:03SPEAKER_03: In Sigil, they probably have a pejorative word specifically for people with OCD.
- 27:08SPEAKER_03: So don't do that.
- 27:10SPEAKER_03: Don't end up there.
- 27:12SPEAKER_01: So uh I'm going to touch uh on the entire history of how the city itself was built.
- 27:19SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 27:20SPEAKER_01: Because there's no specific explanation to how it was built.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: Of course.
- 27:24SPEAKER_05: Then how are you going to touch on it?
- 27:27SPEAKER_01: So there are uh two theories that have come into existence uh so far, at least in second edition.
- 27:34SPEAKER_01: I believe there is one or two more theories uh in later editions, but uh these are the two main ones that are pretty much consistent.
- 27:44SPEAKER_06: Okay.
- 27:45SPEAKER_01: Um the first one is the theory that the Lady of Pain created it.
- 27:51SPEAKER_05: I do recall her.
- 27:52SPEAKER_01: So the Lady of Pain, you know, who is this person?
- 27:56SPEAKER_01: That's a very good question.
- 27:57SPEAKER_01: Nobody knows.
- 27:58SPEAKER_03: That seems to be a theme.
- 28:00SPEAKER_03: Just like, don't ask too many questions.
- 28:03SPEAKER_03: Don't think about it.
- 28:05SPEAKER_03: Don't worry about it.
- 28:06SPEAKER_01: Like, she's not a deity, she's not a person or a humanoid, or no one knows what or who she is, but she is the ruler of the city.
- 28:18SPEAKER_01: And I'm not gonna go into more details about her because I can absolutely make a mini sode of her.
- 28:25SPEAKER_05: Fair enough.
- 28:27SPEAKER_05: Yeah, new mini sode promo.
- 28:29SPEAKER_01: Mini sode promo, actually, probably.
- 28:32SPEAKER_05: Oh, okay, sweet.
- 28:33SPEAKER_01: I might actually end up doing the mini sode for uh next month on the Lady of Pain.
- 28:39SPEAKER_05: So you mean this month?
- 28:40SPEAKER_01: This month, next month, you know.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: Whenever.
- 28:42SPEAKER_01: At some point, time is irrelevant.
- 28:45SPEAKER_01: The second theory is that the uh I hope I pronounced this correctly, the Dabus or Dabus created it.
- 28:54SPEAKER_05: I don't know what that is, so I'd yeah.
- 28:57SPEAKER_01: So um I'm glad you asked.
- 29:00SPEAKER_01: Thank you, thank you.
- 29:01SPEAKER_01: Uh they are humanoids that have like white hair with like goat-like horns.
- 29:07SPEAKER_01: Their skin is usually like yellow, tan or like gray in hue.
- 29:12SPEAKER_01: Um no one knows where they came from either.
- 29:15SPEAKER_00: Of course not.
- 29:16SPEAKER_01: They have been there for as long as Sigil has been there.
- 29:20SPEAKER_01: And they follow without fault the orders given to them by the Lady of Pain.
- 29:27SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 29:28SPEAKER_01: So they are her servants, maybe?
- 29:33SPEAKER_01: Or maybe perhaps they're older than the Lady of Pain, created the city, and then the Lady of Pain came in and they're like, actually, yeah, we want you to rule this.
- 29:43SPEAKER_01: Who fucking knows?
- 29:45SPEAKER_01: No one fucking knows.
- 29:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it really does kind of feel like you know, someone coming coming from outside in would be like, you know, like they would be like, okay, well, what about these guys?
- 29:58SPEAKER_03: And then people who live there are just like, yeah, those are the DABAs, they're just here.
- 30:02SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 30:02SPEAKER_01: They're just here.
- 30:03SPEAKER_01: And literally, that's kind of how the citizens see it, is like they're just here, they fix everything in the city that like breaks down, they take care of like the roads and stuff like that.
- 30:18SPEAKER_03: Okay, I don't know why this is on my mind, but um for some reason I'm getting like I'm getting like keepers on the Citadel from like because I was thinking about that earlier a little bit when I was talking about how some some games, which I don't know why I was thinking about this, because I don't think Mass Effect is super guilty of this, but where like sometimes if they're throwing a lot of lingo, a lot of slang at you, it can be kind of hard to parse through that and all the other stuff.
- 30:47SPEAKER_03: But like, you know, but but I guess I was kind of just thinking of like unfamiliar environments, I guess.
- 30:53SPEAKER_03: But I was thinking about Mass Effect earlier when I was talking about that, and then as we started talking about how a lot of the things in the city are kind of strange, but a lot of people don't question it.
- 31:02SPEAKER_03: I was really getting Citadel vibes, and that really gives me like keepers, yeah, keeper vibes.
- 31:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it gave me keeper vibes too.
- 31:10SPEAKER_03: Like they're just like they're just here, man.
- 31:12SPEAKER_03: Don't worry about it.
- 31:13SPEAKER_01: The fun thing about the Davos, though, Davos, Davus, whatever, um, is they don't talk.
- 31:21SPEAKER_01: Like, they do not ever physically talk, they do not make sounds.
- 31:28SPEAKER_01: Creepy, they can understand all languages.
- 31:32SPEAKER_05: I'm getting more and more keeper vibe.
- 31:35SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're not beating the allegations.
- 31:37SPEAKER_01: They do communicate through uh magical pictures or words that appear above their heads.
- 31:46SPEAKER_05: They just project they just project project thoughts.
- 31:50SPEAKER_05: Yes, like little chat boxes above their heads.
- 31:54SPEAKER_03: That's crazy.
- 31:56SPEAKER_03: This is so beautiful.
- 32:00SPEAKER_01: It really is, it is very 90s, especially because I think this particular information actually came from the Planeswalker handbook, which is from '96.
- 32:09SPEAKER_03: So 1996.
- 32:10SPEAKER_03: That was uh that was a that was a year.
- 32:13SPEAKER_05: That was a year, the first one I experienced.
- 32:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is true.
- 32:19SPEAKER_01: And uh that's the history of uh how it was built.
- 32:23SPEAKER_05: Uh thanks.
- 32:24SPEAKER_05: It just was.
- 32:27SPEAKER_05: It just was.
- 32:28SPEAKER_03: I'm getting huge Citadel vibes.
- 32:31SPEAKER_03: Like not even in a not even in a malicious way of like a oh, don't think about it, don't worry about it.
- 32:39SPEAKER_03: You know, there they're you know, there is no war in sigil kind of thing.
- 32:43SPEAKER_03: But just in the sense of like, I feel like anybody that is from there would just be like, yeah, man, it's just how it is.
- 32:50SPEAKER_05: I have bills to pay.
- 32:52SPEAKER_05: I don't have time to worry about how the city was made.
- 32:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah, basically.
- 32:57SPEAKER_01: No one even really questions it at this point because they have more things to worry about.
- 33:03SPEAKER_03: Right, like it's just like whatever, it's just how it is, you know.
- 33:06SPEAKER_05: Like the fact that there are infinite gates to everywhere, including like places like Avernus and the Abyss, and right, yeah.
- 33:15SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which uh that will also come into play a little bit later.
- 33:19SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 33:20SPEAKER_01: So uh going into like some of the actual features of the city itself, um, specifically, uh it's time to get uh confused and uh turned around.
- 33:33SPEAKER_05: Oh no.
- 33:35SPEAKER_01: So the city itself is built inside of a gigantic hollow ring of unknown origins or material.
- 33:46SPEAKER_01: So it's basically like a car tire without the wheel or the rim or the hubcap.
- 33:52SPEAKER_01: It's the halo.
- 33:54SPEAKER_01: It's the halo, basically.
- 33:56SPEAKER_01: But it's uh it's not well, I mean, you wouldn't notice it when you're on it, but it doesn't sound like fun to be there.
- 34:04SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:06SPEAKER_01: At least as far as like, especially if you're just first experiencing it.
- 34:09SPEAKER_01: From the source uh in the cage, a guide to sigil, uh, this was from 1995.
- 34:16SPEAKER_01: Uh the city measures approximately five miles in diameter and 20 miles in circumference.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 34:24SPEAKER_01: So it is said that the lady can enlarge or shrink it to whatever size and whenever she wants.
- 34:33SPEAKER_01: So it could be bigger or smaller depending on when you measure it.
- 34:38SPEAKER_01: So uh the layout and the more disorient uh disorienting uh part for uh non-cagers.
- 34:46SPEAKER_01: So since it is actually built on the inside of this like giant hollow ring.
- 34:51SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 34:52SPEAKER_01: That means that there's a few like fun things about the layout.
- 34:56SPEAKER_01: Uh first, this means that no matter where you stand, when you look up, there will always be buildings above you.
- 35:03SPEAKER_01: Trippy! Yeah.
- 35:06SPEAKER_01: I don't like that.
- 35:08SPEAKER_01: Uh looking across the center of the ring, because the ring is not fully enclosed.
- 35:14SPEAKER_01: So there is like a hollow like center that you can theoretically see out of.
- 35:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 35:21SPEAKER_01: Uh looking across it, you will see like a broad uh panorama of the city like in the distance.
- 35:29SPEAKER_01: But I should note that this is actually kind of like a rare occasion that you can actually look across and see more than just a few lights.
- 35:37SPEAKER_01: The city itself is mostly almost always contains like a greasy-looking haze from like all the smoke and fumes from like thousands of chimneys.
- 35:49SPEAKER_03: Oh yeah, that doesn't sound like a fun place to be.
- 35:52SPEAKER_03: No.
- 35:54SPEAKER_01: Um, and unlike you know the prime worlds that you know curve downwards because you can like see the horizon.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 36:00SPEAKER_01: Um, this one curves upwards because of how it's built.
- 36:05SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 36:06SPEAKER_01: So like if you look down like a long like alley or avenue, the street will actually curve upwards, like if you were looking up a hill.
- 36:14SPEAKER_05: Uh I don't know why that sounds like San Francisco.
- 36:18SPEAKER_01: So San Francisco.
- 36:20SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay, you guys know what I really want to happen.
- 36:23SPEAKER_03: I really want a I really want a flat earther to like accidentally clip into sigil and just like their brain just explodes.
- 36:33SPEAKER_01: Just lose their fucking brain.
- 36:36SPEAKER_05: You can in fact see the curve of sigil and it doesn't work.
- 36:40SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 36:40SPEAKER_03: And and it's it's even it's even weirder.
- 36:43SPEAKER_03: It's even weirder than just a globe.
- 36:45SPEAKER_03: I really want I want to see that.
- 36:48SPEAKER_01: Same.
- 36:49SPEAKER_01: So let's talk about directions.
- 36:52SPEAKER_01: Uh first is up and down.
- 36:55SPEAKER_01: So the direction of up and down could get confusing when you're standing in a city that curves like this one does.
- 37:02SPEAKER_05: When you're standing on the halo from halo.
- 37:05SPEAKER_01: Yes.
- 37:07SPEAKER_03: The legally distinct halo from halo.
- 37:09SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 37:10SPEAKER_01: Uh down.
- 37:11SPEAKER_01: Oh, I heard a kitty.
- 37:13SPEAKER_01: Yeah, she's she has she has thoughts.
- 37:16SPEAKER_01: So the direction down will always refer to the ground that is beneath your feet, no matter where you're standing in the city.
- 37:23SPEAKER_01: Down is the ground beneath you.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 37:26SPEAKER_01: And up is well, the opposite direction of that.
- 37:31SPEAKER_05: Okay, I've oriented I've oriented myself.
- 37:34SPEAKER_05: It's the it's the same.
- 37:35SPEAKER_03: It's just so far we're following Earth rules.
- 37:37SPEAKER_03: I've oriented myself.
- 37:39SPEAKER_01: So this means that it is entirely possible for two people to be standing on opposite sides of the city, and both can technically look up at each other.
- 37:50SPEAKER_01: Tripping.
- 37:51SPEAKER_05: Okay, yeah.
- 37:52SPEAKER_05: I mean, unless you have supervision, you're not gonna be able to see each other, but yes.
- 37:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah, well, no, you can see above you.
- 37:58SPEAKER_01: You just can't look across the ring.
- 38:02SPEAKER_01: So when I say across the city, that technically means the other like side of the ring that you're on.
- 38:11SPEAKER_03: That is across the city.
- 38:14SPEAKER_03: The outside of the the outside of the tire.
- 38:16SPEAKER_05: I'm was mostly just referring to the fact that it's five miles in diameter.
- 38:21SPEAKER_05: So in very few people have five mileage.
- 38:26SPEAKER_05: Vision.
- 38:27SPEAKER_05: I I was I was just making it.
- 38:28SPEAKER_03: I mean, unless they do on unless they do on sigil, you know, they're building.
- 38:35SPEAKER_01: They could be built different.
- 38:36SPEAKER_01: Um flying is like across the ring is entirely possible.
- 38:42SPEAKER_01: Um, but so is falling.
- 38:45SPEAKER_01: So how do you fall in a place that has two directions, basically?
- 38:53SPEAKER_05: Like how do you fall off of the halo from halo?
- 38:58SPEAKER_01: Basically.
- 38:59SPEAKER_01: So you will always fall toward the section of sigil that is closest to you.
- 39:05SPEAKER_05: Right, because that would be where the gravitational pull would be the strongest in like in comparison to your body.
- 39:13SPEAKER_03: Exactly.
- 39:14SPEAKER_03: I didn't I didn't, guys, I didn't know that that this was gonna be like this gonna be like physics, physics class.
- 39:20SPEAKER_03: I don't know if I want to do this.
- 39:22SPEAKER_03: I didn't know it was gonna be physics class in the trust me.
- 39:26SPEAKER_01: I'm sure that the confusion on my face at uh working for us where this was.
- 39:32SPEAKER_03: You're like you're you're reading this and then you just turn into like the gif of the the the lady from the telenovella with like all the math the white while.
- 39:41SPEAKER_03: Like you're like, what?
- 39:44SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that is what I felt like.
- 39:46SPEAKER_05: Like it's well, it doesn't help that second edition loves its numbers.
- 39:51SPEAKER_03: Yeah, true.
- 39:52SPEAKER_03: Like it, you know, it's very, you know.
- 39:56SPEAKER_05: That's where uh never mind.
- 39:58SPEAKER_05: I'm gonna derail if I can tell.
- 40:00SPEAKER_03: We already we already know.
- 40:02SPEAKER_03: We already know.
- 40:03SPEAKER_01: So um now we're going to cover the inside and the outside.
- 40:08SPEAKER_01: So inside is you know very easy and obvious.
- 40:11SPEAKER_01: The inside is the city itself.
- 40:13SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 40:14SPEAKER_01: Because the city is on the inside.
- 40:16SPEAKER_01: The outside of the ring or tire, whatever.
- 40:21SPEAKER_03: Halo for halo.
- 40:22SPEAKER_03: I'm full, I'm fully just imagining a tire, I'm not gonna lie.
- 40:27SPEAKER_05: I'm over here imagining Halo, and you're imagining a tire.
- 40:30SPEAKER_03: I yeah, I am imagining the tire on my car, and I'm like, okay, so the outside.
- 40:35SPEAKER_05: The outside, where where the treads are.
- 40:37SPEAKER_05: Where the where the treads are.
- 40:39SPEAKER_05: The tread zone.
- 40:40SPEAKER_03: The tread zone.
- 40:43SPEAKER_01: So the outside is vastly different.
- 40:49SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 40:50SPEAKER_01: So according to uh the Sigil and Beyond uh book, which is one of the four books from the Planescape campaign setting, um, no one has ever actually seen the outside because there isn't an outside.
- 41:08SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:09SPEAKER_01: So like the edges of the ring itself, like the inside, are lined with you know buildings, but these buildings have no windows or doors like at the back of them, so you can't like look out and you can't like walk out a door into like the outside of the ring.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 41:28SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 41:29SPEAKER_01: But people have tried climbing like the roofs and stuff to get a view like over the edge of the ring.
- 41:37SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 41:39SPEAKER_01: And when they report what they see, they all say the same thing.
- 41:44SPEAKER_01: Nothing.
- 41:45SPEAKER_01: Literally nothing.
- 41:46SPEAKER_01: It's not emptiness, there's no vacuum, it's just nothing.
- 41:51SPEAKER_03: Terrifying.
- 41:52SPEAKER_03: Love it.
- 41:54SPEAKER_05: I really want to say this.
- 41:56SPEAKER_03: I really want to banish a flat earther to this place.
- 41:59SPEAKER_01: The more and more I hear about it.
- 42:01SPEAKER_01: Same.
- 42:02SPEAKER_01: Especially because I know that their curiosity would get the best of them.
- 42:06SPEAKER_03: And that feels such like the adage of like, oh, you know, yeah, yeah, and you ask them about like Amerigovis Bicci or whatever.
- 42:14SPEAKER_03: And they're like, oh yeah, he just like fell off.
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: You know?
- 42:17SPEAKER_03: Like it's like, oh no, I think you can't circumnavigate the globe.
- 42:21SPEAKER_03: You just go to the edge and fall.
- 42:23SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:24SPEAKER_01: So that's so like that to me.
- 42:26SPEAKER_01: Curiosity does, you know, run rampant with almost every race.
- 42:30SPEAKER_01: Um the book does note particularly with humans in this case.
- 42:34SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 42:35SPEAKER_01: And some have actually stepped off into the nothingness.
- 42:39SPEAKER_05: And you know they'll come back.
- 42:42SPEAKER_01: Correct.
- 42:43SPEAKER_01: They are never seen again, most of them.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Most of them.
- 42:46SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 42:48SPEAKER_01: And this is because stepping off into the nothingness will literally just yeet you into a completely random plane.
- 42:59SPEAKER_01: Oh.
- 43:00SPEAKER_05: I was hoping it would be like some multiverse shit, but I I like this too.
- 43:05SPEAKER_01: It it you will just fall into a completely random plane.
- 43:08SPEAKER_01: So you could end up going into a Vernus or falling into the city of brass.
- 43:14SPEAKER_05: So you have um astral traveling, you have um ethereal traveling, and you have yeet.
- 43:22SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you just have traveling.
- 43:24SPEAKER_03: Yep.
- 43:25SPEAKER_03: Just like, let's go gambling.
- 43:28SPEAKER_01: And just see where you end up.
- 43:30SPEAKER_01: I mean, if you're a human and you do that and you end up in the city of brass, guess what happens?
- 43:36SPEAKER_01: You become a slave.
- 43:37SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 43:38SPEAKER_03: You're just like, you're just you know, you're just tumbling through the air, and it's like, oh dang it.
- 43:42SPEAKER_05: And you see you're in like avernus or something, you're just like I I think I would pick Avernus over the city of brass because at least people are coming and going from Avernus all the time.
- 43:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know, or like, you know, you just like look down, you just see you're about to fall in the middle of the ocean, and you're like, oh man.
- 43:58SPEAKER_03: You don't even know what ocean it is.
- 43:59SPEAKER_03: You're just
- 44:00SPEAKER_05: Or the the the uh plane of water.
- 44:03SPEAKER_05: Yeah just can't breathe.
- 44:06SPEAKER_01: You fall into water, but you know, there's no splash because the whole plane is water.
- 44:10SPEAKER_05: Because the whole plane is here.
- 44:12SPEAKER_03: That'd be crazy.
- 44:13SPEAKER_05: You just suddenly displace water.
- 44:16SPEAKER_03: You know, it like the for for for whatever reason, the the the concept before you specifically said what happens, what I'm thinking about the like unknowing, you know, I'm like, oh that's that's that's kind of scary.
- 44:29SPEAKER_03: But then you're like, oh yeah, you just end up in some random plane.
- 44:32SPEAKER_03: I'm like, I might do that.
- 44:35SPEAKER_03: I might do that just to see what happens, just just to see.
- 44:39SPEAKER_03: And hence hence the hence the primarily the curiosity of of primarily humans, right?
- 44:46SPEAKER_03: You know, hence that that clarification in the text because I'm like, that sounds kind of interesting, actually.
- 44:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 44:53SPEAKER_01: So um there is also no sun and no moon, and there's no like true horizon, but it does have a day and night cycle.
- 45:04SPEAKER_01: Okay, sure.
- 45:06SPEAKER_01: Um, this is caused by the sky basically gradually filling with a magical like luminescence until it reaches a peak, which the peak is roughly equivalent to noon on like prime worlds.
- 45:23SPEAKER_01: And then after that, it'll start to slowly fade.
- 45:27SPEAKER_01: Hence it gives you a day and night cycle.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 45:31SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 45:32SPEAKER_01: So on that, um, we're gonna talk about how they measure time.
- 45:37SPEAKER_01: They use it measuring BP and AP.
- 45:42SPEAKER_01: Any guesses on what those would stand for?
- 45:45SPEAKER_03: Um, battle points and ability points.
- 45:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 45:51SPEAKER_03: No.
- 45:51SPEAKER_03: I've been playing a lot of Pokemon champions recently.
- 45:53SPEAKER_03: I'm sorry.
- 45:56SPEAKER_05: And then nothing.
- 45:57SPEAKER_03: And before point before points and ano pominy.
- 46:05SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 46:06SPEAKER_01: I don't even know what that word is.
- 46:09SPEAKER_05: Before prime and after prime.
- 46:12SPEAKER_01: Close.
- 46:13SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:14SPEAKER_01: So it is before peak and after peak.
- 46:17SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 46:19SPEAKER_01: So uh like 2 BP would be roughly 10 a.m.
- 46:24SPEAKER_01: And then 2 AP would be about 2 p.m.
- 46:29unknown: Okay.
- 46:30SPEAKER_01: Before peak and after peak.
- 46:32SPEAKER_03: And and let me guess, this happens simply just because it does.
- 46:36SPEAKER_03: Probably because the late, probably because the probably because the lady of pain decided that you know people should have time.
- 46:44SPEAKER_03: People should have time.
- 46:46SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that it that if if it's not, you know.
- 46:50SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, basically.
- 46:52SPEAKER_01: It the Lady of Pain did it.
- 46:53SPEAKER_03: The Lady of Pain was like, I'm not digging.
- 46:56SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the Lady of Pain was like, I'm not digging this 24-7 sunlight, this 24-7 light thing.
- 47:04SPEAKER_03: So we're gonna dim it for a few hours every day.
- 47:08SPEAKER_01: Man, and there's there there's like one particular really cool thing about the Lady of Pain that I want to talk about, but I will wait until a mini sode.
- 47:20SPEAKER_01: It's just so cool.
- 47:20SPEAKER_03: Well, you can talk about the cool thing if you want, or or is it like is it like the because like I respect if it's like not you know, you know what I mean?
- 47:30SPEAKER_03: Like if you want it contained in its own thing with like the proper build-up.
- 47:34SPEAKER_03: I don't know why.
- 47:35SPEAKER_03: For some reason, I'm just imagining her as a centibyte.
- 47:37SPEAKER_03: I don't know if it's just because she's called the Lady of Pain.
- 47:40SPEAKER_03: I just want everyone to know that that's my visual.
- 47:42SPEAKER_03: I'm just imagining a centibyte.
- 47:44SPEAKER_03: Fair, like she's just like she's like pinhead, but a lady.
- 47:48SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 47:50SPEAKER_01: So I will just say that the Lady of Pain doesn't have any worshippers, right?
- 47:57SPEAKER_01: And that's because she doesn't allow people to worship her.
- 48:00SPEAKER_05: Oh, I remember that one from the batch.
- 48:05SPEAKER_03: That's interesting.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: That's so cool.
- 48:06SPEAKER_03: I love that.
- 48:07SPEAKER_03: That's so that's so interesting.
- 48:09SPEAKER_01: Because if someone does start to worship her, um, they end up with all their skin flayed off.
- 48:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, so okay.
- 48:20SPEAKER_01: Go ahead.
- 48:21SPEAKER_03: Cool.
- 48:21SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 48:22SPEAKER_01: Like she will just flay their skin off because she does not want any worshipers or followers.
- 48:29SPEAKER_05: It's hard to not worship someone like that.
- 48:32SPEAKER_03: I gotta be a little bit of a if you know that because for one, sick, baller, awesome.
- 48:38SPEAKER_03: But also, like, if you know that that someone has the abilities, like it's within their capabilities to, you know, for one, create this this fantastically impossible city, and then also at a at a moment's notice, at a whim, to just like flay all of your skin off of you because she's displeased with you.
- 49:00SPEAKER_03: That's like I mean, that's someone you could worship, you know.
- 49:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 49:06SPEAKER_03: Uh even if it's uh a fear thing, the but you know clip the meme clip, you could make a religion out of that.
- 49:13SPEAKER_03: You could yeah, exactly.
- 49:16SPEAKER_03: Uh it will not be.
- 49:17SPEAKER_01: You shouldn't.
- 49:18SPEAKER_01: You shouldn't, but she will kill you.
- 49:21SPEAKER_01: That's crazy.
- 49:22SPEAKER_01: So um let's just go back to sigil um or sigil.
- 49:27SPEAKER_01: No.
- 49:28SPEAKER_01: Yeah, no, it just feels this feels wrong.
- 49:31SPEAKER_01: So the weather in the city is actually pretty simple.
- 49:35SPEAKER_01: Uh, rain and smog are pretty much the weather that you get in sigil.
- 49:40SPEAKER_05: Oh, so it's England.
- 49:41SPEAKER_01: Yeah, more or less.
- 49:43SPEAKER_05: It's London specifically, I think.
- 49:46SPEAKER_01: Now, when it rains, the rainwater itself has this like brownish tinge to it, and that's from all of the pollution that it is basically scrubbing out of the sky as it rains.
- 49:58SPEAKER_05: It's industrial revolution England.
- 50:01SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 50:02SPEAKER_03: I I love how we keep bouncing back and forth between like here's why this is like the coolest place ever, but also here's why it sucks.
- 50:13SPEAKER_05: This is why there's all it's only five miles in diameter because no one would fucking live here.
- 50:21SPEAKER_03: Right?
- 50:22SPEAKER_03: Everyone shows up because they're like, oh cool, infinite gateways, to da da da da, and then they're there for like five minutes and they're like, This sucks, actually.
- 50:30SPEAKER_02: It's a tourist city, it's a tourist thing, it's a touristy thing, it's like city, but it's it's like it's a tourist city, yeah.
- 50:36SPEAKER_03: It's like I you know, actually, I won't make any comparisons to real life, real life, any more comparison than anybody to real life places.
- 50:45SPEAKER_05: It's okay if I offend people from London, they will also make the same joke.
- 50:48SPEAKER_03: They they agree, they probably agree.
- 50:52SPEAKER_01: So the combination of like this very gross rainwater and the supremely dirty fog do cause just a few issues for those that live in the city.
- 51:02SPEAKER_01: Um the ones that work outside often develop a constant like hacking cough.
- 51:08SPEAKER_01: And many, it says, die in the streets from consumption of this pollution.
- 51:15SPEAKER_01: That's okay.
- 51:17SPEAKER_01: Um, horses die young uh from the strain of breathing in the smog.
- 51:25SPEAKER_01: And a direct quote from the cage book is a beast of burden spitting its lungs onto one of sigil streets is a common sight.
- 51:34SPEAKER_02: That is terrible.
- 51:37SPEAKER_03: Terrific.
- 51:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 51:40SPEAKER_03: Like the the the Lady of Pain can engineer all this weird physics stuff, but not like But not like a pure an air purifier.
- 51:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like can we get some like you know not Can we just get an industrial strength air purifier?
- 51:56SPEAKER_01: Like That's because when she rules the city, she doesn't care about like minor things within the city itself.
- 52:06SPEAKER_01: Minor things, she only cares about greater things that would threaten her or the city.
- 52:14SPEAKER_01: Like outside, um, for instance, let's just say if a certain arch litch wanted to destroy the city and rise up to godhood.
- 52:25SPEAKER_01: Hypothetically.
- 52:26SPEAKER_01: She would care about that.
- 52:28SPEAKER_03: Yeah, right.
- 52:30SPEAKER_03: She doesn't care about the the the the deterioration of the of the population from like no having uh having every disease.
- 52:41SPEAKER_05: So she doesn't care it and I'm not critique well, I am critiquing, but I guess specifically I'm asking this not as a critique, but for clarification.
- 52:52SPEAKER_05: She basically would not care if the city was completely empty as long as she and it still stood.
- 53:02SPEAKER_01: That is my thought on it, but the chances of that ever happening would be theoretically impossible because of all the travel that happens through it.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 53:12SPEAKER_05: I guess I I mean like more so in that every single person in there she does not give a fuck.
- 53:19SPEAKER_01: More or less.
- 53:20SPEAKER_01: Now that doesn't mean that she has not interfered in some of the goings-on within the city itself.
- 53:26SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 53:27SPEAKER_01: Which I will definitely cover uh actually here fairly shortly.
- 53:31SPEAKER_01: Um so just real quick before that though, uh the sigil itself only has two native birds, it has no native life other than two types of birds and a Oskian hound?
- 53:51SPEAKER_01: A Oskian hound?
- 53:52SPEAKER_01: I don't actually know how to pronounce that, but how do you spell it?
- 53:56SPEAKER_01: Uh A-O-S-K-I-A-N.
- 54:00SPEAKER_01: Sure.
- 54:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's how I would pronounce that.
- 54:02SPEAKER_03: That's how I would that's how I would pronounce that.
- 54:04SPEAKER_01: So the two birds are uh one of them is just described as a grayish-green pigeon.
- 54:10SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that tracks.
- 54:11SPEAKER_03: It's very appropriate that one of their native bird species is a pigeon.
- 54:16SPEAKER_03: Terrific.
- 54:16SPEAKER_01: Now the other one is a gray-bodied raven that has black wings and a black head.
- 54:22SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 54:23SPEAKER_01: This one they typically call the executioner's raven.
- 54:26SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 54:27SPEAKER_01: Uh, due to its fondness of easy mills around the gallows and the uh worm tower.
- 54:37SPEAKER_03: The worm tower.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Yes.
- 54:39SPEAKER_03: Is that a worm?
- 54:40SPEAKER_03: Is that an O or a or a Y?
- 54:43SPEAKER_03: It is a Y.
- 54:44SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 54:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 54:45SPEAKER_05: Uh you have my interest.
- 54:47SPEAKER_03: Tower of the Worm.
- 54:49SPEAKER_03: I mean, I would be I would be into it if it was an O, also.
- 54:52SPEAKER_03: Like that's right.
- 54:53SPEAKER_03: That's fine too.
- 54:54SPEAKER_03: That's cool too.
- 54:56SPEAKER_01: Uh giant Alaskan bullworm.
- 54:59SPEAKER_03: I was thinking purple, but yeah.
- 55:01SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:02SPEAKER_05: The the giant purple worms.
- 55:04SPEAKER_01: The giant purple worms, yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:06SPEAKER_01: Um, so the Ayoskian Hound, which is literally only found in Sigil and literally nowhere else.
- 55:14SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 55:15SPEAKER_01: Um, there's really there's only like one mention of it in any of the source books.
- 55:24SPEAKER_01: Um, and that was in the cage, a guide to sigil.
- 55:28SPEAKER_01: So I guess after that they kind of just vanished for some reason, or maybe were just kind of forgotten about.
- 55:34SPEAKER_01: It's just dog, it's just a dog, you know.
- 55:36SPEAKER_01: But they are described as being two-headed dogs that were bred by the followers of the god Aoscar.
- 55:45SPEAKER_05: Okay, I I I think I I I found the name.
- 55:51SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 55:52SPEAKER_01: So given how they were, you know, bred and came to being, um, their warning bark, this is simply their warning bark, is loud enough to stun people for one to six rounds.
- 56:07SPEAKER_03: Jesus Christ.
- 56:08SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 56:09unknown: Yeah.
- 56:10SPEAKER_03: Are they like big?
- 56:11SPEAKER_03: I'm assuming they're big.
- 56:12SPEAKER_01: They are uh pretty big, yes.
- 56:15SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't get any specific measurements on them.
- 56:19SPEAKER_01: Um, but it did also mention that for the most part they are kept like locked up during the day.
- 56:28SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 56:29SPEAKER_01: But they are released at night.
- 56:32SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 56:33SPEAKER_01: And I'm guessing that is to help curb some crime.
- 56:39SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because it's like, dude, I don't want to leave my house if I think I'm gonna leave, I think I'm gonna leave my house and then walk down the street and I'm gonna hear a dog bark and just like pass out.
- 56:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah, just not be able to move.
- 56:51SPEAKER_01: Yeah, like I don't want to leave my house.
- 56:54SPEAKER_05: I I'm I'm so good with that actually.
- 56:58SPEAKER_01: So uh the next part we're gonna talk about uh the government, and that's kind of a broad term.
- 57:07SPEAKER_03: Oh no, oh no, yeah, I was about to say AP sigil gov.
- 57:12SPEAKER_01: Uh that is because of how the government has ran and been ran before.
- 57:18SPEAKER_01: It actually contributes a lot to like the history of the city itself.
- 57:24SPEAKER_01: So uh that's what we're going to talk about, but uh we will do that after our ad break.
- 57:31SPEAKER_05: Oh, yay! Okay.
- 57:33SPEAKER_03: Okay, I mean yay, but no.
- 57:35SPEAKER_03: I got time to cram.
- 57:36SPEAKER_03: I got time to cram before the government exam.
- 57:41SPEAKER_01: All right.
- 57:42SPEAKER_01: Oh, thank you everyone for listening.

- 59:34SPEAKER_05: We love that man.
- 59:35SPEAKER_01: We do.
- 59:36SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say it's been the same.
- 59:37SPEAKER_03: If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
- 59:39SPEAKER_03: True.
- 59:40SPEAKER_05: And with that, I think uh I want to learn more about sigil.
- 59:44SPEAKER_03: I don't think I do.
- 59:45SPEAKER_03: I think this place sucks, and I never want to I never want to go anywhere near it in my life.
- 59:50SPEAKER_03: I don't want to, I don't, I don't, I don't want to go near this place.
- 59:53SPEAKER_01: It's definitely interesting.
- 59:55SPEAKER_01: That's for sure.
- 59:56SPEAKER_01: So uh let's get into, like I said, the government.
- 1:00:02SPEAKER_01: I want that.
- 1:00:03SPEAKER_03: Never mind.
- 1:00:04SPEAKER_01: I want to know.
- 1:00:06SPEAKER_03: I want to know who's I want to know who's letting this who's letting the streets be overrun with with two-headed feral dogs.
- 1:00:14SPEAKER_03: I want to know who's gonna do something about the pollution.
- 1:00:17SPEAKER_03: I know, right?
- 1:00:18SPEAKER_03: Who do we who do we take to task?
- 1:00:20SPEAKER_03: Who's the who's the who's the mayor, you know?
- 1:00:23SPEAKER_01: Well, so about that.
- 1:00:26SPEAKER_01: That gets a little complicated.
- 1:00:30SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:31SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:00:32SPEAKER_01: So uh going from the planner handbook from 2004, we're taking a quick jump into third edition uh for this.
- 1:00:40SPEAKER_05: All right.
- 1:00:41SPEAKER_01: Um, so in the very distant past, uh more than about seven centuries at the very least, uh the city was ruled by guilds, you know, powerful organizations that kept the order and peace and all that.
- 1:00:57SPEAKER_01: Um there were like some smaller like factions uh that were also like kind of a subset of not the guilds, but just like of the city itself.
- 1:01:08SPEAKER_05: Right, right.
- 1:01:09SPEAKER_01: Um, I mean, they were nothing more than like dozens of splintered and like broken up groups that would just be fighting each other constantly.
- 1:01:19SPEAKER_01: Um, so and that did kind of ravage the city over time.
- 1:01:25SPEAKER_01: So after about like six or seven centuries of this, uh what they call the great upheaval happened.
- 1:01:32SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 1:01:34SPEAKER_01: So the Lady of Pain decreed that the 50 plus uh warring factions would be cut down to just 15.
- 1:01:44SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:01:45SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:01:46SPEAKER_03: So she's not just like she's not just like no more at all.
- 1:01:50SPEAKER_05: She's like you can have a little bit of chaos.
- 1:01:53SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you can have a little bit of a little bit of conflict, yeah.
- 1:01:57SPEAKER_01: So uh this did end, you know, countless feuds nearly overnight because of you know 50 plus factions disappearing.
- 1:02:09SPEAKER_06: How does he disappear?
- 1:02:11SPEAKER_01: So it doesn't say, but my guess is because it is kind of mentioned a bit later on, too, that everyone for good reason um fears the Lady of Pain.
- 1:02:23SPEAKER_02: Okay, that was not a skin flaying thing.
- 1:02:26SPEAKER_01: So when she decrees something, it is almost always followed.
- 1:02:30SPEAKER_05: Okay, so so a bunch of people just were like, I'm not gonna take the chance that uh the rest of you aren't going to start, you know, disbanding, and I'm officially disbanding.
- 1:02:42SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:02:43SPEAKER_01: Basically, and I think it was probably just like the 15 stronger and bigger factions were the ones that survived more or less.
- 1:02:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that that tracks like you know, every everyone who who didn't feel like they had a certain amount of resources or whatever were like, you know what, I'm not gonna take the chance to get my skin removed.
- 1:03:05SPEAKER_05: I I like my skin on me.
- 1:03:07SPEAKER_03: I don't think I don't think that's worth the you know worth the worth the the gamble, I guess.
- 1:03:14SPEAKER_01: The funny thing is, is that's not even the Lady of Pain's favorite method of of taking care of people.
- 1:03:24SPEAKER_03: Oh there's a whole lot of euphemisms right now.
- 1:03:27SPEAKER_03: I sh I shudder, I shudder to imagine what her favorite is.
- 1:03:34SPEAKER_01: Oh dear.
- 1:03:35SPEAKER_01: So um this great upheaval did kind of come with a downside for the guilds.
- 1:03:41SPEAKER_01: Um it brought an end to their power structure because now that the factions were uh cut down and then they were able to kind of grow bigger in size, they kind of became a bit more powerful and they quickly took dominance of the politics.
- 1:04:00SPEAKER_05: Oh, right.
- 1:04:02SPEAKER_01: Um, each faction took up specific jobs within the city.
- 1:04:07SPEAKER_05: So um they basically reverse engineered guilds.
- 1:04:11SPEAKER_01: Uh basically.
- 1:04:12SPEAKER_05: They just consolidated.
- 1:04:14unknown: Yeah.
- 1:04:17SPEAKER_01: I mean, yeah, pretty much.
- 1:04:19SPEAKER_01: So um gonna go through uh the factions here.
- 1:04:22SPEAKER_05: Uh-huh.
- 1:04:23SPEAKER_01: So uh first one is the Athar.
- 1:04:27SPEAKER_01: Um aka they are also called the Lost.
- 1:04:32unknown: Okay.
- 1:04:32SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy is the gods are frauds.
- 1:04:36SPEAKER_01: The unknowable truth lies beyond the veil.
- 1:04:40SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:04:41SPEAKER_01: Um worthy to note that while the uh factions did take up specific jobs within the city, some of them were not uh official positions.
- 1:04:52SPEAKER_01: They were just kind of ones that uh some factions just took over themselves and were just like, Yeah, we'll go ahead and do this.
- 1:04:59SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:05:00SPEAKER_01: So theirs does not have an official position in the government.
- 1:05:05SPEAKER_01: Um, but instead, what they decided to do is they keep watch on all of the priests and clerics of the city, and if one starts to become too powerful, they will knock them down a peg or two, um, usually by leaking information or spreading rumors, although it is not uh unheard of for them to actually just get physical as well.
- 1:05:29SPEAKER_01: Cool.
- 1:05:31SPEAKER_01: Alright, I love that.
- 1:05:33SPEAKER_01: They kept the power balance between the religions and the priests and stuff in check in their own special way.
- 1:05:42SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I mean, I wouldn't say it's the best way to do that, but it is probably a smart thing to be concerned about in uh you know D D.
- 1:05:49SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:05:51SPEAKER_01: So then you have the believers of the Source, um, also known as the Godsmen.
- 1:05:57SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy was all life's Springs from the same divine source, ascending and descending in form as it is tested.
- 1:06:07SPEAKER_01: They also have no official role in the government, but instead they control the Great Foundry, which is uh where they produce pretty much anything that the cagers will need that is made out of iron.
- 1:06:23SPEAKER_01: I mean, fences, hinges, literally anything they make at the foundry.
- 1:06:29SPEAKER_01: So they basically took over the production of everything.
- 1:06:34SPEAKER_03: Very, very interesting, very interesting um sort of uh sort of sphere of influence for the like you know very cerebral kind of uh uh you know sort of almost new agey religion sounding.
- 1:06:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know.
- 1:06:54SPEAKER_01: Um they also took over the Harbinger house, which is where they uh tended to the like truly mad or insane citizens.
- 1:07:06SPEAKER_03: I see.
- 1:07:07SPEAKER_03: Okay, so it's a they've got their it's they've got their yeah, they're like we've got the we've got the steel, and we also have like the the the mental hospital.
- 1:07:19SPEAKER_05: The mental institution, yeah.
- 1:07:20SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and also and also we are like you know this is 1800s London, not at all, but like not hippies, but you know what I mean.
- 1:07:32SPEAKER_05: Like they're we're new age Yeah, they're like one un universalist, there we go.
- 1:07:39SPEAKER_05: Yeah, exactly, yeah.
- 1:07:41SPEAKER_03: And also New Age Universalists, we have the means of production and and an and you know we do a little we do a little psychiatric care on the side.
- 1:07:52SPEAKER_03: Okay, yeah.
- 1:07:55SPEAKER_01: So um then you have the bleak cabal, um, also known as the bleakers.
- 1:08:02SPEAKER_01: Okay, of course their philosophy is the multiverse ain't supposed to make sense.
- 1:08:07SPEAKER_01: There's no grand scheme, they're nihilists, meaning no elusive order, the only truth worth finding lies within.
- 1:08:15SPEAKER_05: They're nihilists.
- 1:08:16SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:08:17SPEAKER_01: Pretty much.
- 1:08:18SPEAKER_01: Um, despite their what most would consider bleak outlook, they are actually very charitable.
- 1:08:25SPEAKER_01: They took it upon themselves to basically run a hospital.
- 1:08:29SPEAKER_01: They're basically the doctors.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_03: Huh.
- 1:08:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:08:33SPEAKER_03: Then how did you know what?
- 1:08:34SPEAKER_03: Whatever.
- 1:08:36SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:08:37SPEAKER_03: No, you know what?
- 1:08:38SPEAKER_03: No, you know what that that that that jives to me.
- 1:08:41SPEAKER_03: That jives to me.
- 1:08:42SPEAKER_05: I mean, yeah, but it would make sense for them to have the mental the mental hospital.
- 1:08:47SPEAKER_03: Listen, the the the the um the godsmen got there first.
- 1:08:51SPEAKER_03: Like physically got there first.
- 1:08:55SPEAKER_03: The godsmen got there first.
- 1:08:56SPEAKER_03: Like they were like, you know, it's it's actually it's down the street from the foundry, you know, so they were like, let's just we're just gonna take that too.
- 1:09:04SPEAKER_01: Why not?
- 1:09:05SPEAKER_03: We'll just yok that too while we're here.
- 1:09:07SPEAKER_03: Two for one deal.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:09:08SPEAKER_01: Then you have the doom guard, uh, also known as sinkers.
- 1:09:14SPEAKER_03: Okay, uh someone put the put the dune the dune music on this.
- 1:09:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:09:20SPEAKER_01: So the doom guard philosophy is entropy is ecstasy, decay is divine, the multiverse is supposed to fall apart.
- 1:09:29SPEAKER_01: We're just here to keep leatherheads from interfering.
- 1:09:32SPEAKER_05: They're edgy nihilists.
- 1:09:34SPEAKER_05: Yeah, the okay.
- 1:09:37SPEAKER_01: Uh they took control of the armory.
- 1:09:41SPEAKER_01: So therefore, they control who gets the weapons.
- 1:09:44SPEAKER_05: Oh no, I don't like that.
- 1:09:46SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:09:48SPEAKER_01: Uh then you have the dustmen, uh, aka the dead.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:09:54SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:09:55SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy is we're all dead, some more so than others.
- 1:09:59SPEAKER_01: We explore our state with patience, purge our passion, and ascend toward the purity of true death.
- 1:10:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, true death being capitalized.
- 1:10:08SPEAKER_05: 15 shades of nihilism.
- 1:10:11SPEAKER_05: So they're like that's well, they're like they're like really edgy Jedi.
- 1:10:17SPEAKER_01: Kinda, yeah.
- 1:10:19SPEAKER_01: I mean, okay, yeah.
- 1:10:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:10:21SPEAKER_03: They're like if a if a if a if a Jedi and a Sith had a baby, because they've got that like dark vibe, but they're also like, you know, taming the passion and you know.
- 1:10:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:10:34SPEAKER_01: So um they control the mortuary and take care of the city's deceased.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: Of which there are.
- 1:10:42SPEAKER_03: Okay, that makes sense.
- 1:10:44SPEAKER_03: That tracks, of which there are many.
- 1:10:46SPEAKER_03: They're probably very busy.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: Yep.
- 1:10:48SPEAKER_01: And with that statement, um, sigil itself doesn't actually have space for graveyards.
- 1:10:55SPEAKER_05: I I get that feeling, yeah.
- 1:10:58SPEAKER_01: So instead, the mortuary itself has portals that connect to other mortuaries and other places of death in other planes.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:11:07SPEAKER_01: So the dustman just throw the deceased through those portals.
- 1:11:10SPEAKER_01: Oh my god!
- 1:11:12SPEAKER_05: I thought we were gonna like they were gonna be a sick ass crematorium or something.
- 1:11:17SPEAKER_03: Okay, I was I was imagining it's like they take them there and like inter them, or because my first thought was that they just yeet, and then I was like, oh no, if it connects to other, they probably take them and put it.
- 1:11:27SPEAKER_05: No, they just carry them in other no, they they literally just throw them to junt them out the airlock.
- 1:11:33SPEAKER_03: They're like, get out of here.
- 1:11:35SPEAKER_01: So if it helps any, the uh planes on the other side of these portals are aware of this and have agreed to actually do this.
- 1:11:45SPEAKER_01: So they're not just throwing the dead into some random person's thing and just be like, this is your problem now.
- 1:11:50SPEAKER_05: What they're doing is still kind of wild because then they're throwing the dead through there and uh like yeah, they know, but it's like, oh, our monthly shipment of dead bodies from sigil has just arrived and it's just a pile of dead.
- 1:12:04SPEAKER_01: Just a pile of dead.
- 1:12:06SPEAKER_03: Oh god, they just like open the door to like the basement or whatever, and it's just like it's just the hair.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: Oh man.
- 1:12:12SPEAKER_05: Oh god.
- 1:12:13SPEAKER_05: Arthur didn't didn't send me a letter that it was gonna be this bad that he was gonna send them early.
- 1:12:19SPEAKER_03: He didn't work in overtime, he didn't send me the itemized, you know, yeah, the itemized dead list.
- 1:12:27SPEAKER_03: He didn't send me the inventory slip.
- 1:12:29SPEAKER_03: God damn it.
- 1:12:31SPEAKER_01: Uh actually that reminds me stupid dead.
- 1:12:35SPEAKER_01: Uh so sidetrack uh real quick.
- 1:12:37SPEAKER_01: Um, so the uh city actually has what they call the book of the dead.
- 1:12:44SPEAKER_01: And that is what they say whenever someone dies or gets executed is they've been put into the book.
- 1:12:51SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 1:12:52SPEAKER_01: Just a little side note.
- 1:12:54SPEAKER_05: That's really cool.
- 1:12:55SPEAKER_05: So I think that got adopted by a couple of different um play uh like game settings because I have heard similar things in uh like Forgotten Realms specifically.
- 1:13:08SPEAKER_01: You know, I thought it sounded vaguely familiar, so that would probably be why.
- 1:13:13SPEAKER_01: Uh so then you have the faded, um also known as Takers, Heartless, or Coldbloods.
- 1:13:20SPEAKER_04: Okay.
- 1:13:22SPEAKER_01: Uh their philosophy is the multiverse belongs to those who sees it.
- 1:13:25SPEAKER_01: No one's to blame for a poor sod's fate but the sorry sod himself.
- 1:13:31SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:13:32SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:13:33SPEAKER_03: You know, I feel like I feel like their principal name being faded as opposed to one of the other ones kind of it evokes a different vibe.
- 1:13:42SPEAKER_03: It evokes a different vibe.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:13:44SPEAKER_03: Um you know, the faded, also known as the stoners or the you know, no, instead they're the takers or the heartless or the cold bloods.
- 1:13:55SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:13:56SPEAKER_01: And they took control of the hall of records.
- 1:14:00SPEAKER_01: Um, they basically do all of the paperwork for like deeds, deaths, births, okay, etc.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: etc.
- 1:14:06SPEAKER_01: etc.
- 1:14:08SPEAKER_01: Um, they also have the fantastic misfortune of being the tax collectors.
- 1:14:13SPEAKER_05: Oh, yeah.
- 1:14:14SPEAKER_05: So they are the there are taxes in Sigil?
- 1:14:18SPEAKER_05: That is bullshit.
- 1:14:19SPEAKER_03: You you live here, deal with the pollution and the fucking dogs, and you gotta pay taxes.
- 1:14:26SPEAKER_01: Well, how else is the city supposed to be maintained?
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_03: Is it?
- 1:14:29SPEAKER_03: I don't know.
- 1:14:30SPEAKER_03: Cetabyte magic.
- 1:14:32SPEAKER_03: I don't know how did it get made?
- 1:14:35SPEAKER_01: Tell me that one knows exactly so uh they are obviously the most hated of the factions just because of their job.
- 1:14:44SPEAKER_05: Yeah, okay, I gathered that.
- 1:14:47SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, you have the fraternity of order, also known as governors, like G-U-V-N-E-R-S.
- 1:14:57SPEAKER_03: Okay, oh my god.
- 1:14:58SPEAKER_03: I I really think that they were trying to parody that like the it writes itself, man.
- 1:15:04SPEAKER_05: It is just like parody London London.
- 1:15:09SPEAKER_03: Yeah, are you kidding?
- 1:15:10SPEAKER_03: The governors, get out of here.
- 1:15:12SPEAKER_01: Um yeah, so um they're basically the paladins, without I think actually being paladins.
- 1:15:19SPEAKER_01: Um, their philosophy is everything has laws, most are dark.
- 1:15:23SPEAKER_01: Learn the laws of the multiverse and you can rule it.
- 1:15:27SPEAKER_05: Okay, okay, yeah, they're paladins, yeah.
- 1:15:30SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:15:31SPEAKER_01: Um, so they control the city court and act as judges.
- 1:15:35SPEAKER_03: Okay, that that tracks.
- 1:15:37SPEAKER_03: I feel like I feel like it's I don't trust them though.
- 1:15:40SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:15:41SPEAKER_03: Uh well, I feel like it's 50-50 on like any of these factions having like you know, jobs and purviews that are like either 100% what you would expect from like their kind of philosophy and like policies and stuff like that.
- 1:15:59SPEAKER_03: And then the other half is like completely the opposite.
- 1:16:02SPEAKER_03: Because like I would think that a faction like the um you know, the faded, that they're very like, oh yeah, you know, uh, you know, you gotta you gotta get out there and and you know take what you want.
- 1:16:17SPEAKER_03: Like those would be the people who would probably want to be in control of something like the armory, you know.
- 1:16:22SPEAKER_03: Right.
- 1:16:23SPEAKER_03: But instead they're they're you know, they're the they're the accountants, you know, they're the they're the they're the CPAs, you know.
- 1:16:31SPEAKER_03: Like I think it's kind of it's kind of interesting how some of them, but then some of them are like bang on, like you know, the dead being the the morticians and what have you.
- 1:16:41SPEAKER_01: And the governors being the judges.
- 1:16:43SPEAKER_01: I mean it makes sense considering they, you know, they believe wholeheartedly in the law.
- 1:16:49SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:16:50SPEAKER_03: But but the the contrast from some of them and then the like bang on, like exactly what you would expect from other ones is very interesting.
- 1:16:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:16:59SPEAKER_01: So then you have the free league, um, also known as uh the in-depths.
- 1:17:06SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy is this ain't no faction, and nobody tells us what to do.
- 1:17:12SPEAKER_01: Keep your options open, nobody's got the key to the truth.
- 1:17:17SPEAKER_05: This is one of my faction, they say at the faction meeting.
- 1:17:23SPEAKER_01: Uh their job is also not official, but it definitely aids the city to the point that no one is gonna complain about it.
- 1:17:31SPEAKER_01: And that is because they took it upon themselves to make sure that the markets stay more or less honest and that the uh higher-ups and the guilds can't control it by fixing prices or other unscrupulous things.
- 1:17:47SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, I okay, I'm into that, which is a big thing to control because of the fact that this whole city is a trade city, they're um monopoly busters, yeah.
- 1:18:01SPEAKER_03: You know, I can I do think they gotta work on the branding of their faction branding, being like this ain't no faction when it clearly is.
- 1:18:10SPEAKER_05: They should unionize, they should become the unions.
- 1:18:14SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:18:15SPEAKER_01: You know, they probably would.
- 1:18:17SPEAKER_05: Yeah, well, no, because that would be a faction, yeah.
- 1:18:20SPEAKER_03: They gotta they gotta pretend like they're not a they're just they're just hanging out, you know.
- 1:18:24SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they're just about passionate guys being dudes, the market being free, but genuinely, yeah.
- 1:18:34SPEAKER_01: Um, so you have the harmonium, uh, aka the hardheads.
- 1:18:39SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy is peace is our goal, but if it takes a little war to get others to see things the harmonium way, so be it.
- 1:18:46SPEAKER_01: That's how we'll reach our golden harmony.
- 1:18:49SPEAKER_03: Teddy Rebelt said okay.
- 1:18:53SPEAKER_01: They control the city barracks and in turn the city watch.
- 1:18:57SPEAKER_05: Right.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:18:59SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:19:00SPEAKER_01: So um they are basically the police force, and they like to arrest those that they think are breaking the law.
- 1:19:08SPEAKER_01: Emphasis on their version of the law and the cities don't always line up, so they tend to arrest people who aren't actually doing anything illegal.
- 1:19:19SPEAKER_01: Which then the governors are like, Yeah, you didn't break any laws, go away.
- 1:19:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, the governors are over there like, guys, we talked about this.
- 1:19:28SPEAKER_01: We told you.
- 1:19:29SPEAKER_03: This isn't a law, guys.
- 1:19:32SPEAKER_03: I don't care.
- 1:19:33SPEAKER_03: I don't care if he if he seemed sus.
- 1:19:37SPEAKER_03: That's not something that you can arrest someone for.
- 1:19:41SPEAKER_01: That is 80% of the city's population.
- 1:19:44SPEAKER_03: Just because just because pronouncing it Sigle isn't a crime.
- 1:19:48SPEAKER_03: We've talked about this.
- 1:19:50SPEAKER_05: It is unfortunately in our city charter.
- 1:19:53SPEAKER_05: If you want to get around if you want to like really get into the nitty-gritty, it might be a crime to say it the other way.
- 1:20:01SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:20:02SPEAKER_03: But we all choose to ignore this, so so you gotta stop arresting people just for pronouncing it.
- 1:20:09SPEAKER_01: Sigle.
- 1:20:11SPEAKER_01: So um after them, you have the mercy killers, uh, also known as Red Death.
- 1:20:18SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:20:19SPEAKER_01: Their philosophy.
- 1:20:21SPEAKER_03: Let me guess.
- 1:20:22SPEAKER_03: They're they're nice and they like being nice.
- 1:20:26SPEAKER_01: No.
- 1:20:27SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:20:28SPEAKER_03: Damn.
- 1:20:29SPEAKER_01: Justice is everything.
- 1:20:30SPEAKER_01: When properly applied, punishment leads to perfection.
- 1:20:34SPEAKER_01: They control the Catholic God damn.
- 1:20:42SPEAKER_03: Yeah, they're the they're the okay.
- 1:20:46SPEAKER_03: I was really proud of that one.
- 1:20:48SPEAKER_03: I'm so sorry.
- 1:20:49SPEAKER_01: Oh my god.
- 1:20:50SPEAKER_01: That no, that one was good.
- 1:20:52SPEAKER_01: That was really good.
- 1:20:53SPEAKER_01: That was fantastic.
- 1:20:56SPEAKER_01: So they control the prison.
- 1:20:59SPEAKER_01: Um they uh patrol the streets just of the quarter that's nearby the prison.
- 1:21:09SPEAKER_01: Not of the whole city, just you know.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:21:11SPEAKER_03: They're the whole area.
- 1:21:13SPEAKER_03: It's a little bit more of a warden or like prison guard thing as opposed to like a cop.
- 1:21:17SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:18SPEAKER_01: Um they also are in turn in control of executions and run the tower of the worm that is like nearby.
- 1:21:28SPEAKER_01: Hence the the the red death I see.
- 1:21:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:21:34SPEAKER_01: So um executions basically fall into three different categories.
- 1:21:41SPEAKER_01: Um, I didn't type them down, but uh one of them is the gallows.
- 1:21:47SPEAKER_01: Uh one of them is basically the uh chopping block, which is beheading.
- 1:21:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:21:53SPEAKER_01: And the other one is the tower of the worm.
- 1:21:57SPEAKER_01: What pray tell happens in the tower of the worm?
- 1:21:59SPEAKER_01: What happens in the tower of the worm?
- 1:22:01SPEAKER_01: So the tower of the worm uh holds the mercy killer's mascot, which is a worm or a wyvern, depending on who talk to.
- 1:22:14SPEAKER_05: Or a wyvern.
- 1:22:15SPEAKER_01: Or wyvern.
- 1:22:17SPEAKER_05: Depending on who you want to talk to.
- 1:22:19SPEAKER_03: Be careful how you pronounce it because they will arrest you.
- 1:22:22SPEAKER_05: They will.
- 1:22:23SPEAKER_05: Well, okay, not them, but the other guys.
- 1:22:25SPEAKER_01: Someone's gonna harmonium will, yeah, yeah.
- 1:22:29SPEAKER_01: So um the fun thing about this particular uh wyvern is uh the venom itself is used to induce delirium, which they actually use to extract confessions out of the guilty.
- 1:22:45SPEAKER_01: Oh, good.
- 1:22:46SPEAKER_01: They've got a truth serum.
- 1:22:48SPEAKER_01: Yes, actually, it did state that this is Planescape's version of the truth serum.
- 1:22:53SPEAKER_03: But does it actually is it zone of truth, basically?
- 1:22:56SPEAKER_03: But does it like actually work?
- 1:22:58SPEAKER_03: Because truth serums in real life.
- 1:23:00SPEAKER_05: Yeah, they they you you if you're prone to suggestion, then yeah truth.
- 1:23:05SPEAKER_01: Well, it kind of works the same because it does induce delirium.
- 1:23:09SPEAKER_05: So like in the game in game stats, it does it make you more prone to truthfulness?
- 1:23:17SPEAKER_01: Um, it didn't specify, but that would be my guess.
- 1:23:22SPEAKER_03: You know, so it's slightly more effective.
- 1:23:25SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, because it's like on the one hand, it's like they probably would have taken a more literal approach and made it act kind of like a like a you know, an idealized like truth serum, but also like who knows?
- 1:23:37SPEAKER_03: Because like corruption in this city rampant.
- 1:23:41SPEAKER_03: I can believe it.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_03: I can believe it.
- 1:23:42SPEAKER_03: I don't know why, I can believe it.
- 1:23:45SPEAKER_01: Rampant, especially with all the garnish going around.
- 1:23:48SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:23:49SPEAKER_01: God about the garnish, garnish, and on rare occasions, it specifically does state that the executions for the tower of the worm is rare.
- 1:24:00SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:24:01SPEAKER_01: Um, that's the last thing of like style of execution.
- 1:24:07SPEAKER_01: Basically, they just feed the guilty to the worm, right?
- 1:24:12SPEAKER_03: Yeah, that's probably yeah, that's yeah.
- 1:24:14SPEAKER_01: They're just like, yep, hey, go eat this.
- 1:24:16SPEAKER_03: Yeah, you know what?
- 1:24:18SPEAKER_03: You know what?
- 1:24:19SPEAKER_03: I gotta say though, if I were if I were a medieval peasant, and like my only my only entertainment was watching people get executed, I would really like to watch worm.
- 1:24:29SPEAKER_03: I would want I would love to watch a wyvern eat someone.
- 1:24:33SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, it's actually considered a few.
- 1:24:36SPEAKER_01: It is actually considered a holiday when an execution happens at the Tower of the World.
- 1:24:43SPEAKER_01: So like everything shuts down.
- 1:24:45SPEAKER_01: There's like a very small uh like festival sort of thing.
- 1:24:51SPEAKER_03: People are people are going down, they're wearing their Sunday best to watch and watch this execution.
- 1:24:58SPEAKER_03: That's so funny.
- 1:24:59SPEAKER_05: Why?
- 1:25:00SPEAKER_05: I mean, like this.
- 1:25:01SPEAKER_05: I'm not sure if it's a love letter or a critique to Industrial Revolution London.
- 1:25:07SPEAKER_03: Yeah, it feels like it's like both.
- 1:25:11SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:25:13SPEAKER_05: It's because everything is like wow, this came straight from a um uh I can't remember his name, guy who uh wrote a tale of two cities.
- 1:25:28SPEAKER_05: Uh uh, yeah.
- 1:25:30SPEAKER_05: That guy I've I've it's it's like straight out of a like one of his novels.
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_03: Charles Dickens?
- 1:25:36SPEAKER_03: Did Dickens write a Tale of Two Cities?
- 1:25:38SPEAKER_03: I don't know what that was a hundred That was a hundred percent just like a like a fear, like a like a panic response from from from being live because that's like unironically one of my favorite books.
- 1:25:52SPEAKER_03: Same.
- 1:25:53SPEAKER_03: It's like when someone asks you, like, oh, what's your favorite food?
- 1:25:56SPEAKER_03: And you're like, I don't remember anything I've ever eaten in my life.
- 1:26:00SPEAKER_03: Yeah, just because you feel like you're on the spot.
- 1:26:03SPEAKER_05: No, I mean like that that I also love that book.
- 1:26:06SPEAKER_05: It's one of my favorites.
- 1:26:07SPEAKER_03: And yeah.
- 1:26:10SPEAKER_03: We're fake fans.
- 1:26:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:26:12SPEAKER_01: Uh we we then uh jump to the Revolutionary League, also known as Anarchists.
- 1:26:19SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, their philosophy is the status quo is built on lies and greed, crush the factions, break them down, and rebuild with what's left.
- 1:26:28SPEAKER_01: That's the only way to find the real truth.
- 1:26:30SPEAKER_01: Be the love revolution.
- 1:26:32SPEAKER_01: So they also don't have an official role and are actually just straight up too unorganized to even have an unofficial one.
- 1:26:40SPEAKER_03: Okay, base.
- 1:26:41SPEAKER_03: Okay, I love it.
- 1:26:42SPEAKER_03: So they're just okay.
- 1:26:44SPEAKER_03: So they're they are anarchists, yeah.
- 1:26:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah, um, they mostly just lurk in the streets and offer helping hands to like loners in trouble or do pretty much whatever they want.
- 1:26:55SPEAKER_03: Okay, okay, based.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:26:57SPEAKER_01: I like them.
- 1:26:59SPEAKER_01: Uh, you have the sign of one, also known as signers.
- 1:27:05SPEAKER_01: Uh, their philosophy is the planes exist because the mind imagines them.
- 1:27:10SPEAKER_01: Any signer could be the one who creates the multiverse through the power of thought.
- 1:27:15SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:27:16SPEAKER_05: Okay, Neo.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:27:18SPEAKER_05: So they're stoners.
- 1:27:20SPEAKER_05: Okay.
- 1:27:22SPEAKER_01: And they run the Hall of Speakers.
- 1:27:25SPEAKER_01: Uh, this is where the high-ups meet to make the laws of the city.
- 1:27:31SPEAKER_01: They also settle feuds, uh, handle treaties, and all the fun legislative stuff that keeps sigil running.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:27:39SPEAKER_03: That's so that's so interesting for the the faction of people who are like oh yeah, man, what if it's all what if it's all just the barriers are in our minds.
- 1:27:52SPEAKER_03: It's it's all, I'm telling you, man, are like those people who like unironically think that like they're the only real person.
- 1:27:59SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:28:00SPEAKER_01: they're like you know like I feel like this would be a faction that would attract people like that you know and then they're like okay here why don't you just like run uh why don't you just like settle uh disputes and you run the the lobbyists run the yeah exactly they're lobbyists yeah uh you have the Society of Sensation um oh god also known as the Sensits or Sensates that's a good Netflix show it I mean yeah it was their philosophy is to know the multiverse experience it fully the senses form the path the truth for the multiverse doesn't exist beyond what can be sensed also not an official role but they make sure that there is always and I mean always entertainment and like little diversions within the city the the bread and circus yeah yep so this helps to keep the entire city from going mad which would be realizing that they are swimming in pollution yeah yeah it would be a very bad thing given you know how many races across the plains tend to live or visit there.
- 1:29:16SPEAKER_01: And how much commerce goes on and can you imagine like uh Beitu going fucking insane because of boredom yeah no no I don't want that uh you have the transcended order also known as ciphers oh their philosophy is action without thought is the purest response train body and mind to act in harmony and the spirit becomes one with the multiverse okay okay um they are the most like universally accepted of all the factions okay so that they get along well with pretty much everyone yes um and that is because their only goal is like the perfect union of thought and action so they kind of embody the qualities that like the other factions lack uh like compassion tolerance order stability etc etc okay so they kind of help balance out the other factions more or less yeah because you have some some of them are they should be the ones in charge of the disputes yeah because some of them are very extreme order some of them are obviously very you know chaos you know yeah um then you have the final faction which is the and I am gonna hope I pronounced this right but the uh Zausitex sure I I believe you I trust you sure um they're also known as the chaos men so we're just gonna go with the chaos men okay I like the chaosmen yeah uh their philosophy is the chaos is truth order delusion embracing the randomness of the multiverse one learns its secrets sure okay you know I feel like so many actually no you know what uh I'll I'll I'll I'll probably touch on this again in a minute yeah yeah so a direct quote is the chaos men have no claim no stake in the city they are too capricious for ruling too uncontrolled to judge and too free to follow orders um they basically represent those that don't have anything um they're kind of like always lurking on the edge of order eager to pull down any system that is built okay they sound like a this might be what you were going to say Louan they just sound like a subfaction of anarchists kind of no I was I was gonna be I was I was make I was I I had I had in mind kind of a broad okay kind of talking about all of them but um like why why do they exist?
- 1:31:55SPEAKER_01: They should just be the anarchists well so because the anarchists don't go as far as like tearing down any systems that are built so like their attempts to tear down everything is actually part of what keeps the city constantly building so in a weird roundabout way they are still helping the city itself like build okay but like ma'am that building's been there for like 4000 years what the fuck is wrong with you right tear it down no it's part of history they're like that they're like that one meme where it's like where it's like Bart Simpson is like hitting the mustard packets with a hammer and you know I think I think it's Homer is like why are you doing that?
- 1:32:47SPEAKER_03: And then he just like turns around it's just like making a face no response that's them they're just yeah they're just they're just doing it just cut us because you gotta I guess you gotta because like entropy dog you know oh okay well yeah so that's all the factions and uh what their roles were so were were so then we get to the faction war.
- 1:33:17SPEAKER_01: Oh my god oh no so the stability that the 15 factions created in like the grand scheme of things was short-lived it lasted roughly 630 years right um so eventually the factions started putting themselves on pedestals believing their way was the right way for its members and the city as dogmatic people do yeah in turn caused each of them to believe that they had the right to rule the city over everyone else and as one would imagine eventually it turned from just political strife into all out physical violence and that is how the start of the faction war happened they all just started actually fighting each other now this is literally an entire adventure module oh um that's called faction war that was released for second edition back in 98 so I'm not going into detail on like the whole war itself because that's a whole fucking module that I'm just we don't have time for.
- 1:34:23SPEAKER_01: Right right and there's probably a lot of you know yeah but long story short the streets ran red with the blood of the war treachery espionage occurred deals were made and broken shit got crazy basically um eventually a truce was made and the faction war was over okay so three days after the truce was made the Lady of Pain appeared in front of the new leaders of each faction with one simple message this city tolerates your faction no longer abandon it or die.
- 1:35:03SPEAKER_01: Oh okay so naturally they listen right because they remembered the skin flare they do they remember the skin flare yeah um although it's not like a hundred percent clear no one knows a hundred percent what uh the lady meant when she said abandon it so some thought that it means to like literally abandon the city oh others think it means to just like lead the faction and give up control of all power yeah so in turn uh three factions ceased to exist entirely uh the believers of the source the mercy killers and the sign of one all just completely ceased to exist all right six of them moved their power structure to a new location so they stayed together they just moved to a new city um the Athar, the Doom Guard the Faded the Fraternity of Order the Harmonium and the Revolutionary League all just up and moved okay did they move to like other cities in the outlets or did they go to other planes?
- 1:36:13SPEAKER_01: It didn't specify but my guess would be a combination since they have access to like everything.
- 1:36:21SPEAKER_03: Right yeah they can kind of just they can kind of go wherever yeah um six of them remained in the city but they completely like disband and let go of all the power that they had yeah uh the bleak cabal the dustmen the free league the Society of Sensation the Transcendent Order and the Chaosmen so they remained they just gave up all control okay yeah like the the individual people remained but they just dissolved their organization.
- 1:36:54SPEAKER_01: So then the question became who is going to do the day-to-day tasks because the lady didn't yeah she didn't say like she was just like I'm tired of you fighting get the hell out yeah she's not like here's everyone's new job assignments so um some of the roles are actually filled by the remaining people from the factions that uh just disbanded and like stayed in the city.
- 1:37:23SPEAKER_01: Right um they were no longer factions they held no like true authority anymore and now they kind of just ran everything more like a business than like as a political system.
- 1:37:36SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:37:37SPEAKER_01: Uh the census still oversaw the entertainment the dustmen continued to take care of the dead uh the bleakers continued to tend to the sick and the wounded and the in-depths continued to help control the market.
- 1:37:50SPEAKER_01: Okay um but you know they can no longer carry out like official administrative tasks otherwise they would end up facing the wrath of the lady right so who takes over those jobs well the answer was simple what is your guess the other factions that are just like regular citizens yeah like they're just right like I guess sort of never mind my my guess would be like because there's no other like we're like they had the factions had to but uh yeah what do you describe a collection of people I agree yeah they're just a group of friends they're just yeah they're just buddies you know uh so those are all wrong right I wasn't uh the dabas oh actually I forgot about them so uh they claimed that it was uh by the Lady of Pain's order to take charge of the judicial system so that's what they did okay which for the most part is actually like a pretty good change since they uh they don't take bribes and they cannot be corrupted.
- 1:39:13SPEAKER_01: I would imagine they're a lot more objective yeah yes their sentencing is the most fair that the city has ever seen now the one problem with that is communication yeah given the whole they don't you know speak speak to yeah so a direct quote from the faction wars was it's hard for an advocate to understand the judge's decision when it's delivered as a string of picture symbols floating in the air yeah uh many of the symbols could be interpreted to mean different things so there would be cases that both the plaintiff and the defendant would think hey we won because they interpreted it as different things.
- 1:40:00SPEAKER_01: Yeah it's like a a a like high def picture of like the defendant being beheaded and it's like oh uh we won't I don't think it's good no um so also there's no one to collect taxes and since it was the most hated job of all no one is willing to step up and actually do it even the DABAs don't want to collect the taxes they're like nah nah which they would have been the safest ones to do it because if you kill Adobus you are immediately sent for execution to the worm.
- 1:40:33SPEAKER_01: Right yeah because the yeah yeah so no one takes taxes they're no longer collected and you know what happens to the city when no taxes are being collected it continues to not get maintained yeah the roads nothing the roads don't fall apart sock towers continue to run the city remains totally completely 100% unaffected it's almost like it kind of doesn't matter because it's all it magic the Lady of Pain's mind magic.
- 1:41:07SPEAKER_01: Yeah exactly well it's actually because the Dalbus are the ones who had been repairing the city and all of that this entire time so literally they were just pocketing the taxes basically yeah they just took taxes for no reason they never got paid anyway right yeah because you know they are just servants of the lady so they just did what they were told.
- 1:41:30SPEAKER_01: So the citizens came to realize that all of the taxes they had to pay were basically just lining pockets of the factions.
- 1:41:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah that's it because it's like what's you know if they were like but it's like what's the lady of pain gonna do with that money exactly so yeah she's not gonna do she doesn't she doesn't care she she seems above she seems above above currency above the concept of money to me so like that's funny.
- 1:41:56SPEAKER_01: Yeah so um that's pretty much it for like second edition so we'll kind of quickly go through some of the changes for the other editions.
- 1:42:05SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:42:06SPEAKER_03: Um third edition from the manual of the planes that was released in 2001 um the whole getting yeeted to another plane thing if you step into the nothingness uh that's no longer a thing apparently uh now instead you just plummet down the spire what happens at the bottom you die there I mean but also like worse worse worse concept worse idea is that there is no bottom and you just fall forever just of you know or well I guess first you would die of uh dehydration of whatever yeah whatever's happening to you I would rather just hit the bottom and die you know what I mean than just fall also the faction wars haven't happened yet the factions still control the city in third edition oh okay um so uh the planar handbook for 3.5 and 2004 this is actually the first time that it really like describes not the first time that it describes the architecture but it described it in a better way and it was kind of the same through second edition so I just kind of took it from this one.
- 1:43:21SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:43:22SPEAKER_01: Um as one might guess the architecture is actually like vastly different the ground itself is like hard and sturdy but you can't use it as building materials because when you excavate it it just crumbles to dust.
- 1:43:36SPEAKER_01: Oh that's there are no trees for lumber so in order to build everything materials must be imported from other planes.
- 1:43:47SPEAKER_05: So you have a like a wide variety of materials.
- 1:43:50SPEAKER_01: Interesting this leads to the city basically being incredibly unique because no two buildings are made of the same material there is no like standard design for the architecture.
- 1:44:02SPEAKER_05: It's like a true melting pot.
- 1:44:04SPEAKER_01: That's that's kind of cool I like that's really cool yeah exactly like since there's no like dominant style you have just a massive mixture of like cultures next to each other like dwarves that build their stone structures are next to these full like elven villas.
- 1:44:21SPEAKER_01: Next to just like a regular old log cabin yeah next to what would be a reproduction of like an abyssal palace right down the street and like a white marble shrine to paylord tucked down an alleyway.
- 1:44:34SPEAKER_05: I really like that yeah that's actually that's that's really cool I like that um so now in 2004 the faction wars have already happened okay um because it states that you know the DABAs run the city courts and everything.
- 1:44:49SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:44:49SPEAKER_03: It also mentions that when necessary they also uh can help put down riots so the DABAs kind of take on a more like law and order yeah yeah um they don't bother interfering with like petty crimes though yeah it's only if it's like a a a real ever present threat kind of yeah so like crime is still rampant right it's just petty crimes mostly I mean murder and stuff still happens but right yeah but it's like you know unless it's something on a scale that's actually going to threaten the city as a whole right or in in some you know yeah so you know if it's just some random person getting murked it's like well it's like well that person's gonna end up having to go through the court system get judged and all that but yeah but if it's like a a big thing I see yeah so there are now a few new theories on how sigil came into being um some say that it was built 10,000 years ago by a deposed Duke of Hell okay others claim that it was unconsciously created by an insane demigod while he was dreaming that I okay yeah yeah and I like I like that explanation.
- 1:46:08SPEAKER_01: See I actually do like that one yeah yeah others say that it was constructed from the leftover bits of the outer plains just after the time of creation.
- 1:46:17SPEAKER_01: And I like that one too yeah it does those kind of I feel like really lean into the sort of you know the strange just the strange otherness yeah yeah yeah so something that has also been consistent uh throughout all the editions is razor vine this is the only plant that actually thrives in sigil okay okay we got two birds we got one dog we got a dog maybe kind of two dogs kind of plant and now we got a plant and now we got a plant um it is as sharp as a knife oh it grows literally wherever it can um and it's also a climbing plant so it can grow and climb anything and everything what if cudzy really wanted to kill you what if cudsy really wanted to kill you yeah that's crazy so uh the Dabas keep it in check in most places so they like you know make sure it doesn't overgrow roads and walkways and stuff like that and some residents have actually figured out how to like cultivate it to act as protection around their homes yeah it takes a lot of effort though yeah I can't believe that uh a tabletop RPG put to get put like implemented a um explore barrier for video games yeah because that's all the that I can think of is that this would be such a useful ex exploration barrier.
- 1:47:46SPEAKER_01: Yeah right it uh it grows really fast yeah like one foot or more per day oh my god yeah that's worse than bamboo it's like yeah it's like bamboo kudzu and a knife had a baby oh I don't like this baby or like barbed wire you know yeah but then when you cut it it becomes dull and brittle go figure yeah of course go figure it can't be used for like weapons or anything like that it's just used for uh deterring and protection because like you know what thief is gonna want to climb your climb razorvine to get to a window it yeah barbed wire was apt yeah like razorvine is better yeah this is like barbed wire is like the evolution of barbed wire uh so uh now we get to the fun partition it's fourth edition time yay so like I mentioned at the beginning uh this is the only time that it is called the City of Secrets and that is because they say everything that can be known is known somewhere in its twisting streets.
- 1:49:03SPEAKER_01: Okay I like that okay yeah so I mean it's it is actually pretty cool but now Sigil is not only a city but also a plane unto itself existing outside the ordered structure of the rest of the universe and yet intricately connected to it through its unnumbered planar portals.
- 1:49:26SPEAKER_05: This is if I recall correctly when Wizards of the Coast was doing wild things with the planes.
- 1:49:33SPEAKER_05: Yeah I mean I guess but like this is when they were experimenting with different models.
- 1:49:40SPEAKER_03: Yeah I mean like I guess but also like I don't know I think it's cooler if it's just its own weird thing.
- 1:49:46SPEAKER_03: I don't know like okay so like functionally are is it that different not really but like I don't know I think it's cool when it's kind of it's just its own thing.
- 1:49:57SPEAKER_05: I mean they tried to make it like if if It followed the same trend as like all of the other stuff with fourth edition in the planes.
- 1:50:05SPEAKER_05: They tried to make it functionally different.
- 1:50:07SPEAKER_05: It just didn't they didn't do a good job.
- 1:50:09SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:50:10SPEAKER_01: They also, I mean, shocking no one don't know what the hell they're doing.
- 1:50:15SPEAKER_01: Um, so there's a lovely contradictory statement uh happens.
- 1:50:22SPEAKER_01: So it says that uh sigil may well hold the honor of being both the best and worst protected city in the multiverse, since it has no walls or gates, there's no fear of like sieges from outside threats like a typical city would have.
- 1:50:36SPEAKER_01: And then it follows that up by saying on the other hand, just about anybody or anything can walk right into the city whenever he, she, or it pleases through the portals that connect sigil to other planes.
- 1:50:49SPEAKER_01: But literally, five sentences down, it says most portals need a portal key to activate them.
- 1:50:57SPEAKER_01: Which I mean someone please explain to me how both of these things can be true.
- 1:51:01SPEAKER_05: I mean, I mean, I guess theoretically anyone could, but can anyone?
- 1:51:05SPEAKER_03: Yeah, exactly.
- 1:51:06SPEAKER_05: But yeah, like they could, but like it I I can see the intention, but very bad phrasing.
- 1:51:13SPEAKER_03: Yeah, but like they could, but like would they?
- 1:51:16SPEAKER_01: You know like anybody or anything can walk right into the city through these portals, but most of these portals also require portal keys that require like effort and knowledge to like don't get me like don't get me wrong.
- 1:51:31SPEAKER_03: Like I can appreciate the like the contradiction.
- 1:51:35SPEAKER_03: Like I can appreciate the idea of contradictions existing in that way in this very strange alien place, but like you gotta expand on it a little bit.
- 1:51:44SPEAKER_05: The phrasing definitely needs to be better too.
- 1:51:47SPEAKER_03: Yeah, like you gotta you like you gotta you gotta follow up on what you're actually saying there, you know.
- 1:51:52SPEAKER_03: Yeah, bring it bring it together, like not to be nitpicky, but like you know, you gotta exactly but like you gotta kind of expand on, you know, like you know, you gotta you know you gotta you gotta expand on it a little bit to to make it work, you know.
- 1:52:09SPEAKER_03: You gotta work for it.
- 1:52:11SPEAKER_01: So um I didn't uh touch on this at the beginning, I kind of forgot, but so um while you cannot use magic to like get into the city other than the portals, um it does actually state that once you're in the city, all magic works normally, so you can't use like planar travel spells to get out of the city.
- 1:52:34SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, or you can use it.
- 1:52:36SPEAKER_06: Odd in fourth edition.
- 1:52:37SPEAKER_01: Uh I mean because now it states that you can't use magic or rituals to get in or out of the city.
- 1:52:44SPEAKER_01: Which I mean to get in, yes, that's been a consistent thing.
- 1:52:47SPEAKER_03: I mean, I don't know.
- 1:52:48SPEAKER_03: I I kinda like that.
- 1:52:49SPEAKER_03: Like, I kind of like that okay with it.
- 1:52:51SPEAKER_03: I'm okay with it.
- 1:52:51SPEAKER_05: It's just weird that it changed halfway through.
- 1:52:53SPEAKER_03: But they decided to just kind of change it.
- 1:52:56SPEAKER_05: Yeah, I I I don't mind that as a concept.
- 1:53:01SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:53:01SPEAKER_03: Um factions like horrifying.
- 1:53:04SPEAKER_03: Like imagining that like once you're in, you're you you have to know how to get out.
- 1:53:09SPEAKER_03: You have to know how to get out, yeah.
- 1:53:11SPEAKER_01: Yeah, which I mean a lot of the portals are there, so like you just do it.
- 1:53:17SPEAKER_05: But like you have to know which one that you want to use.
- 1:53:21SPEAKER_01: Exactly.
- 1:53:22SPEAKER_01: And like, because of it being such a big like trade city, that is actually one of the bigger uh things that it's traded with in the city is knowledge of the planar portals.
- 1:53:32SPEAKER_01: Yeah, so you just have to like find someone to trade with to get the information you need.
- 1:53:38SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:53:39SPEAKER_01: Um, factions are only mentioned briefly in that they existed at one point, each running a different part of the city.
- 1:53:47SPEAKER_03: So we're long past the age of the factions.
- 1:53:49SPEAKER_03: Oh, so we're past we're past like faction war.
- 1:53:52SPEAKER_01: Yeah, then they got told to leave in the aftermath of a terrible war.
- 1:53:55SPEAKER_01: That's literally all it says.
- 1:53:56SPEAKER_01: A terrible war.
- 1:53:58SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 1:53:58SPEAKER_03: It feels like they were just like, yeah, they've probably they've they've they've they've read this before.
- 1:54:04SPEAKER_03: They know, even though no, no, they probably haven't.
- 1:54:08SPEAKER_03: They're like, they're like they've they've watched the Dungepedia episode on this.
- 1:54:12SPEAKER_03: They know what the faction is.
- 1:54:14SPEAKER_05: Yes, that is what they were thinking during fourth edition.
- 1:54:18SPEAKER_03: During fourth edition, they're like, they've watched the Duggypedia episode, they know what the faction, they know all the factions, they know about the faction war, you know.
- 1:54:26SPEAKER_01: So um now also the Lady of Pain is the only thing that stops the city from plunging into anarchy and chaos.
- 1:54:34SPEAKER_01: So she controls the whole city.
- 1:54:38SPEAKER_01: Um, the Dobbas are still there.
- 1:54:40SPEAKER_01: Um they remain to be the ones that like you know fix things when they break and keep it like functioning.
- 1:54:45SPEAKER_05: Maybe this is more firmly establishing the line of control between the Lady of Pain and the Davis.
- 1:54:53SPEAKER_01: Maybe they're just vibing.
- 1:54:55SPEAKER_01: Um they still don't speak, but the way they communicate has changed.
- 1:55:01SPEAKER_01: Now, if they need to communicate with someone, they do so using gestures and sign language.
- 1:55:07SPEAKER_05: I mean I don't mind that.
- 1:55:10SPEAKER_05: Like conceptual, okay, conceptually I don't mind it.
- 1:55:14SPEAKER_05: It just is so wildly different.
- 1:55:18SPEAKER_05: Yeah, it would be nice if there was like a like a there were like if there was lore around it.
- 1:55:27SPEAKER_05: Like, oh, the Dobbas found that they couldn't communicate effectively uh with their preferred meth methods, so they learned over time how to communicate better.
- 1:55:39SPEAKER_05: Like if there that's the thing with fourth edition, is I don't mind a lot of things in concept, but they just don't bring it home in a way that works.
- 1:55:48SPEAKER_03: Cause I think it would be kind of interesting.
- 1:55:51SPEAKER_05: There's a potential fun lore component there that they just like left on the table.
- 1:55:55SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:55:56SPEAKER_03: And also, like, I I can't lie, I'm just like, I'm just really in love with the idea of like a little guy of just like just like pictures, you know.
- 1:56:05SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
- 1:56:06SPEAKER_05: And don't get me wrong, I prefer that.
- 1:56:08SPEAKER_05: I do prefer that, but I think that it you could go a fun route with it.
- 1:56:12SPEAKER_03: It's and especially when so many especially when so many things that are done when there changes to established lore that it just pisses people off.
- 1:56:24SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and in a way like it's yes, right, yeah.
- 1:56:27SPEAKER_03: Well, especially in a way where it's like it's kind of just like a weird footnote.
- 1:56:32SPEAKER_03: Like because it's like if it's something that they really took and they like, they like drove it home, like I could still see it, like for me personally, I could still see it as being like, I think this was a dumb change, I don't really like it.
- 1:56:47SPEAKER_03: But at least they like did something with it.
- 1:56:49SPEAKER_03: I can respect that.
- 1:56:50SPEAKER_03: But whenever they're just like, it's just like, oh yeah, they do the same or they they don't and it's like two sentences, you know, then you're like, okay, what was the point?
- 1:57:00SPEAKER_05: You know, why did you why like that and I think that sort of comes back around to my thing with like I'm okay with a lot of these things like for lore reasons.
- 1:57:12SPEAKER_05: But like But when they don't when you don't have when it doesn't have a point, it feels like you just don't care.
- 1:57:18SPEAKER_03: Like it feels like they kind of were just arbitrarily like we're just gonna change this just because you know why not?
- 1:57:24SPEAKER_05: Like when you adapt something and then you just sort of start changing things willy-nilly, and you come up with something completely different, and there's like no logical reasoning behind it.
- 1:57:37SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 1:57:39SPEAKER_01: So the uh Dungeon Masters Guide 2 uh for fourth edition, which was 2009, um, there's only one thing that I'm pulling from this, and that's because it is just absolutely hilarious.
- 1:57:52SPEAKER_01: Right.
- 1:57:53SPEAKER_01: Oh boy.
- 1:57:53SPEAKER_01: So I didn't touch on like the various wards before because I was more focused on like the lore of like the city itself, not really its like layout so much.
- 1:58:04SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
- 1:58:05SPEAKER_01: But so there are various wards of the city, and like all of previous editions and sources all say the same thing that they run counterclockwise around the ring in the order of the ladies' ward, the market ward, guild hall ward, clerk's ward, high ward, and lower ward.
- 1:58:26SPEAKER_01: Right, okay.
- 1:58:27SPEAKER_01: So in this source book, it states that the wards run clockwise in the order of the ladies' ward, the market ward, the guild hall ward, the clerk's ward, the lower ward, and the high ward.
- 1:58:42SPEAKER_01: So the lower ward and the high ward have now been switched and it runs the opposite direction.
- 1:58:49SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 1:58:50SPEAKER_01: Yeah, okay, go ahead.
- 1:58:52SPEAKER_01: But not only does that like you know contradict literally every other source book, it also contradicts itself because the map that is within the source book shows everything correctly as mentioned in previous editions.
- 1:59:08SPEAKER_01: Going counterclockwise and in going yeah, going uh counterclockwise and all in the right order.
- 1:59:15SPEAKER_03: Oh my god.
- 1:59:18SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I almost want to believe that's like 5,000 IQ level like 4D chess, like trolling.
- 1:59:25SPEAKER_03: Just because this place is.
- 1:59:27SPEAKER_05: Oh, it's just it's bad editing.
- 1:59:29SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, no, it's a hundred percent speaking, it's it's a hundred percent, it's a hundred percent like needed another pass to make sure everything was right, but like yeah, okay, and the map of the city was like four or five pages after this.
- 1:59:46SPEAKER_03: See, that that to me does just does just seem like such a like a sign that it feels like those changes were kind of made arbitrarily arbitrarily.
- 1:59:54SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 1:59:54SPEAKER_05: Because I don't hate making everything clockwise, but there was no need to switch the location of the wards.
- 2:00:02SPEAKER_03: Um and then when you go back and see the map, it's like yeah, like okay.
- 2:00:10SPEAKER_05: But and also there was no I guess there was without a reasoning for why they made that change, it's all kind of stupid.
- 2:00:17SPEAKER_03: And it's like it's like, why'd you make it clockwise?
- 2:00:21SPEAKER_03: And not counterclockwise.
- 2:00:22SPEAKER_03: It's I mean, at least fix the map.
- 2:00:25SPEAKER_03: It's yeah, it's gotta be counterclockwise, it's more whimsical.
- 2:00:28SPEAKER_05: Well, I'm I'm okay, like I said, I'm okay with it either way because if you make it clockwise, then you can kind of hearken it to like, oh, it's it's kind of like a little bit of mechanisms.
- 2:00:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:00:41SPEAKER_03: Yeah, okay.
- 2:00:42SPEAKER_03: Which um but the fact that it was just like it, you know, and it you could you can make the case that it's such a small detail, but it kind of doesn't really matter.
- 2:00:50SPEAKER_03: But then it's like, but if it doesn't really matter, then why did you do that?
- 2:00:53SPEAKER_03: Why did they make the decision to to arbitrarily change it?
- 2:00:56SPEAKER_03: I don't know, whatever.
- 2:00:57SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:00:58SPEAKER_03: They didn't ask me.
- 2:00:59SPEAKER_01: Sorry.
- 2:01:00SPEAKER_01: Uh speaking of Mechanis, yeah.
- 2:01:03SPEAKER_01: Um, so uh that's it for fourth edition.
- 2:01:06SPEAKER_01: Um good uh where um there's really only one little tidbit of new information for fifth edition.
- 2:01:16SPEAKER_01: Um and that's from Mordenkainen's Toma Foes from 2018.
- 2:01:21SPEAKER_01: This is the first time that the Hall of Concordance is mentioned.
- 2:01:26SPEAKER_01: Okay, so this is an embassy of like pure law, and it's basically where contracts between two parties are finalized and upheld.
- 2:01:35SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:01:36SPEAKER_01: So when two parties agree to, you know, the mutual terms of the contract, they have to pay gold to the uh uh uh Kaliaret.
- 2:01:52SPEAKER_01: It's a mechanical engine of like just absolute uh jurisprudence.
- 2:01:58SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:02:00SPEAKER_01: And then once they do that, they have their contract chiseled onto a sheet of gold that is then placed in the chest of a merit or merut.
- 2:02:11SPEAKER_03: Okay.
- 2:02:11SPEAKER_01: Um the merut were specifically created by Primus for this purpose.
- 2:02:17SPEAKER_01: Okay, yeah.
- 2:02:19SPEAKER_01: Like this is their one and only purpose.
- 2:02:21SPEAKER_01: From that point on, until the contract is fulfilled, uh the merit is bound to enforce its terms and punish any party who breaks them.
- 2:02:32SPEAKER_01: Oh now, it will only resort to lethal force if the contact calls for it, if the contract itself is fully completely broken, or if someone attacks the merit.
- 2:02:45SPEAKER_01: Okay.
- 2:02:45SPEAKER_06: Yeah.
- 2:02:46SPEAKER_01: But other than that, this machine exists purely to make sure that this contract is fulfilled to its exact letter.
- 2:02:56SPEAKER_05: Very, very mechanist of it.
- 2:02:58SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's and it will completely reject contracts that have vague statements in it.
- 2:03:06SPEAKER_05: It it's a loophole finder.
- 2:03:08SPEAKER_05: Basically, it it says, nope, there are too many loopholes in this one.
- 2:03:12SPEAKER_05: Try again.
- 2:03:13SPEAKER_03: See, that's why you gotta that's why you gotta pay for it, because like they gotta bring out a bunch of tablets of gold.
- 2:03:20SPEAKER_03: Because you've got like a you've got like a terms and contract.
- 2:03:23SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
- 2:03:24SPEAKER_03: You've got to you've got to lay out all that stuff.
- 2:03:27SPEAKER_03: Dude, imagine like going and like getting married and like getting your prenup enshrined.
- 2:03:32SPEAKER_03: And then like every time you think about every time you think about every time you think about leaving your spouse, you just see like outside your window is just like a like like Robocop, just yeah, you made a robot Robocop enforcer, and you're like, you know what?
- 2:03:49SPEAKER_03: Never mind, let's just go to marriage cuts.
- 2:03:50SPEAKER_01: We we can we can pull it together.
- 2:03:56SPEAKER_01: Um, but uh that's it.
- 2:03:57SPEAKER_01: That is all the information that I have.
- 2:04:02SPEAKER_05: I like sigil a lot more.
- 2:04:03SPEAKER_05: Like I didn't dislike it, but I just there's so much more to it.
- 2:04:07SPEAKER_01: And there is actually like a lot more about sigil that I might do a second episode on later, but um that will you this is already um running for our longest episode yet?
- 2:04:19SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
- 2:04:20SPEAKER_05: So um yeah, that is did ask me uh at the beginning how long are our episodes usually?
- 2:04:28SPEAKER_05: And I was like, about an hour to like an hour 30.
- 2:04:32SPEAKER_05: He's like, oh no.
- 2:04:33SPEAKER_03: Oh no, this one is running way over.
- 2:04:36SPEAKER_03: Oopsie.
- 2:04:38SPEAKER_03: So uh oops.
- 2:04:40SPEAKER_03: Hey, it's it's fine.
- 2:04:42SPEAKER_03: It's fine.
- 2:04:43SPEAKER_03: But you know, I feel like I I feel like we just did like three different episodes, not because of the length, but just because I feel like the vibe jumped around so much to where it was like, you know, yeah, it did jump quite a lot, like, you know, kind of isharian cosmic, yada yada, and then it's like, okay, now we're in like industrial revolution London, you know.
- 2:05:07SPEAKER_03: And then it's like then back to a you know, Asharian, cosmic, yeah, you know, uh whatever.
- 2:05:17SPEAKER_03: Dang.
- 2:05:18SPEAKER_03: I like it though.
- 2:05:20SPEAKER_01: Yeah, uh, like I said, that's all the information that I have.
- 2:05:23SPEAKER_03: Well, thank you everybody for listening and for everybody who tuned in live today.

- 2:06:15SPEAKER_02: That I wasn't gonna listen into that.
