- 0:00Speaker 1: Just firing up the leaf blower this morning on the
- 0:02Speaker 1: Small Music Breakfast show.
- 0:04Speaker 2: We've got time for one more thought on the leaf
- 0:06Speaker 2: blower discussion that we were having. I'm interested to know
- 0:09Speaker 2: what Mel in Woodridge thinks because Mel's a school gardener,
- 0:13Speaker 2: aren't you, Mel?
- 0:15Speaker 3: Yes, I am.
- 0:16Speaker 2: Hello, good morning. What do you make of the debate?
- 0:21Speaker 3: Oh, well, I was just actually... using my Karen of
- 0:25Speaker 3: the rake world as you were speaking.
- 0:28Speaker 4: And I was listening to you having a laugh. Yeah,
- 0:32Speaker 4: I generally have to blow them into the garden bed
- 0:35Speaker 4: and then get the rake and a garden bag and
- 0:37Speaker 4: pick them up.
- 0:37Speaker 5: Okay.
- 0:38Speaker 4: This school doesn't have one of those. Whatever works.
- 0:42Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 0:43Speaker 4: But the last school I worked at, they had a
- 0:46Speaker 4: thing called the billy goat and it was amazing. It
- 0:49Speaker 4: would suck up the leaves and turn it into mulch,
- 0:52Speaker 4: into like a bag. All in one.
- 0:54Speaker 2: Fantastic.
- 0:55Speaker 6: What do you call it? The billy goat. The billy goat.
- 0:57Speaker 4: It's called a billy goat, yeah.
- 0:59Speaker 1: Might be looking that up.
- 1:01Speaker 2: I was putting that on this Christmas list.
- 1:03Speaker 4: There we go.
- 1:03Speaker 1: Lisa, my Christmas present from you.
- 1:05Speaker 3: Give me a billy goat.
- 1:05Speaker 4: Okay, billy goat. Awesome. Yeah, they're a couple of grand,
- 1:08Speaker 4: but they're.
- 1:09Speaker 6: Not worth it. Lisa's good for that.
- 1:15Speaker 4: Thanks, Mel. Thanks, Mel.
- 1:17Speaker 2: I think we all agree that they're a wonderful tool.
- 1:20Speaker 2: Just don't blow your leaves onto your neighbour's driveway off yours.
- 1:26Speaker 1: I don't have an argument with that.
- 1:27Speaker 2: Yeah, no, well, that's okay. We're all in agreement.
- 1:30Speaker 5: Katie. Blanchett and these movie stars who've never picked up
- 1:34Speaker 5: a broom or a rake.
- 1:35Speaker 6: In their bloody lives.
- 1:37Speaker 2: You don't know that.
- 1:38Speaker 6: Whinging and complaining and saying that it's everything that's wrong
- 1:40Speaker 6: with humanity.
- 1:41Speaker 1: I mean, it's a.
- 1:42Speaker 6: God.
- 1:43Speaker 2: Kate has thoughts on a lot of things, but I
- 1:45Speaker 2: still think she's a wonderful actress.
- 1:47Speaker 1: Yes, well, sometimes she should just keep them to herself.
- 1:50Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Now, let me tell you, this morning, if you're out
- 1:53Speaker 1: there blowing, the wind is coming from the southeast, all right?
- 1:57Speaker 1: Then at about midday, the wind is going to change
- 2:01Speaker 1: and it's going to blow all your leaves back where
- 2:03Speaker 1: you just blew them because it's going to flip around.
- 2:05Speaker 3: Exactly.
- 2:05Speaker 2: Well, that's what we were talking about this morning. People
- 2:07Speaker 2: that use a leaf blower to just blow leaves onto
- 2:10Speaker 2: the road, they're just going to blow right back at you.
- 2:12Speaker 6: That I don't have an argument. That I don't have
- 2:14Speaker 6: an argument with. It's just don't go on the broom.
- 2:18Speaker 6: All it is is a replacement for the broom, okay?
- 2:20Speaker 1: Kate.
- 2:21Speaker 2: Planchette has absolute rages over it. And we've had quite
- 2:25Speaker 2: a few thoughts. Felicity says, I'm on team Kate Lisa.
- 2:27Speaker 4: Sorry, Russell.
- 2:28Speaker 2: Leaf blowers are a metaphor for what humans do. We
- 2:30Speaker 2: create a mess, then we sweep it under the carpet
- 2:32Speaker 2: or into the ocean and wonder why the planet's dying.
- 2:34Speaker 6: I didn't create the mess, the tree. The planet created
- 2:37Speaker 6: the mess. I'm cleaning it up.
- 2:39Speaker 3: Properly.
- 2:39Speaker 6: And I'm doing it responsibly.
- 2:41Speaker 2: Kristen in Darling Down says Bunnings need to have an
- 2:44Speaker 2: idiot exam put in place before anyone is allowed to
- 2:46Speaker 2: buy a leaf blower.
- 2:47Speaker 4: I failed it.
- 2:47Speaker 2: I don't know if my neighbour is stupid or a jerk,
- 2:49Speaker 2: but he gets out his leaf blower and blows all
- 2:51Speaker 2: his leaves off his property onto ours and the other neighbours.
- 2:55Speaker 6: No, see, that's not on. That's not on. I agree
- 2:57Speaker 6: with that.
- 2:58Speaker 2: And Dean from Malaga says, I live with my grandma
- 3:01Speaker 2: in Kingsley and she has heaps of trees and can't
- 3:03Speaker 2: do all the work by raking anymore. But at Bunnings,
- 3:05Speaker 2: they now have a blower that also sucks up all
- 3:07Speaker 2: the leaves and debris. But other than that, they're sort
- 3:10Speaker 2: of obsolete if they don't have one that does the
- 3:12Speaker 2: sucking up of.
- 3:14Speaker 1: I think you've got to get a really, really good
- 3:15Speaker 1: one because the cheap ones, they're no good.
- 3:17Speaker 4: Well, you know, it's worth it.
- 3:19Speaker 6: Well, no.
- 3:20Speaker 2: No, but, you know, it's one of those things that
- 3:23Speaker 2: I think is a really good investment for yourself and
- 3:26Speaker 2: your sanity and your neighbours.
- 3:28Speaker 1: I put them in the corner and I sweep them
- 3:31Speaker 1: up and I put them in the green bin and
- 3:32Speaker 1: I take.
- 3:32Speaker 6: Care of them responsibly. But it's not me making the mess.
- 3:37Speaker 5: No.
- 3:38Speaker 6: It's the trees. Mother Nature at fault again. To blow
- 3:46Speaker 6: or not to blow?
- 3:46Speaker 1: That's the question.
- 3:48Speaker 6: Just firing up the leaf.
- 3:49Speaker 1: Blower this morning on the Small Music Breakfast show.
- 3:53Speaker 2: We've got time for one more thought on the leaf
- 3:55Speaker 2: blower discussion that we were having. I'm interested to know

- 4:26Speaker 5: Okay.
- 4:26Speaker 4: This school doesn't have one of those U-Butte things. Yep, yep. Yeah,
- 4:31Speaker 4: but the last school I worked at, they had a
- 4:34Speaker 4: thing called the billy goat and it was amazing. It
- 4:37Speaker 4: would suck up the leaves and turn it into mulch,

- 4:43Speaker 2: Fantastic.

- 4:45Speaker 2: The billy goat.
