- 0:07This is Finding God at Work.
- 0:14Just a reminder that Finding God at Work
- 0:16isn't just a podcast, it's also an online
- 0:18course.
- 0:19Check it out at findinggodatwork.org.
- 0:28Our current series is Meaningful Work, Calling, Formation,
- 0:31Service, and Love.
- 0:33And I want to start this episode with
- 0:36St. Joan of Arc.
- 0:38If you have never just hopped on Wikipedia
- 0:39and read the story of Joan of Arc,
- 0:42it really kind of defies the imagination.
- 0:44It feels like it's something out of myth,
- 0:46but it's actually historical fact.
- 0:49Joan of Arc was a military leader who
- 0:51essentially saved France and helped restore the rightful,
- 0:54as understood at that time, heir to the
- 0:56throne of France, Charles VII, who was known
- 0:58as the Dauphin at that time, to the
- 1:01throne during the Hundred Years' War between France
- 1:03and England.
- 1:04She's also a canonized saint of the Roman
- 1:06Catholic Church.
- 1:06She believed that she was following the provision
- 1:09and the guidance of God in her mission.
- 1:12And there's a lot of complexity and layers
- 1:14in that story that we can't get into.
- 1:16But there's this historical quote of St. Joan
- 1:19of Arc from a particular moment in this
- 1:22kind of perilous journey where she had to
- 1:24go from one part of France to another.
- 1:27And she had to go through territory where
- 1:28there were a lot of English soldiers.
- 1:31And she was seeking out the Dauphin, the
- 1:33rightful heir to the throne.
- 1:34And someone asked her, like, how are you
- 1:35going to do this since there's so many
- 1:37soldiers?
- 1:37Here's what she said.
- 1:40I do not fear the soldiers, for my
- 1:42road is made open to me.
- 1:44And if the soldiers come, I have God
- 1:46my Lord, who will know how to clear
- 1:48the route that leads to Messire the Dauphin.
- 1:51It was for this that I was born.
- 1:55It was for this that I was born.
- 1:59Have you ever had that feeling?
- 2:01Something where you're in it, you're doing it,
- 2:05and it just feels like your whole being
- 2:07is in the right place.
- 2:09Like things have somehow come together so that
- 2:10you can be there and do that thing.
- 2:13There's a moment of truth, a truth about
- 2:15who you are, that also seems somehow to
- 2:17resonate more deeply than just that moment.
- 2:19But it's about your whole life.
- 2:20There's something meaningful about it that connects to
- 2:23who you were meant to be, who you
- 2:25were born to be.
- 2:27Now, not everybody has a dramatic moment like
- 2:30this, certainly not as dramatic as St. Joan
- 2:32of Arc.
- 2:32But I think many of us have had
- 2:34an experience of something that we do feeling
- 2:38right.
- 2:39Something about an activity or a certain kind
- 2:42of work or a certain kind of relationship
- 2:44or a certain place that we occupy in
- 2:47a community just sort of ringing true.
- 2:50And for us as followers of Jesus, like
- 2:53Joan of Arc herself, we should see that
- 2:56this is God who is opening the way
- 2:58for us if there really is something meaningful
- 3:01there.
- 3:02And the word that Christians throughout the centuries
- 3:05have used to describe this dynamic is vocation.
- 3:09It comes from the Latin root voca, which
- 3:12is the same root as for the word
- 3:13voice.
- 3:14And so there's this idea that God can
- 3:16make his voice heard.
- 3:18He can speak in a way that we
- 3:20can hear and we can respond to that.
- 3:22And when we do, we're stepping into our
- 3:24vocation or to use more contemporary parlance, we're
- 3:27stepping into our calling.
- 3:30But there are a lot of misunderstandings about
- 3:33calling, especially perhaps in the Christian world.
- 3:36There can be misunderstandings about calling in the
- 3:38secular world for sure.
- 3:39But we have our own little foibles in
- 3:41our Christian subcultures, at least the one that
- 3:43I'm familiar with and the kind of evangelical
- 3:45subculture in the United States where people can
- 3:47kind of think about calling in the wrong
- 3:49way.
- 3:49It can get confused.
- 3:50It can get muddled.
- 3:51So what I want to do in this
- 3:53episode is look at four myths about calling.
- 3:57So we're going to look at a few
- 3:58different scripture verses and try and offer just
- 4:01a slightly different version, a different vision where
- 4:04I think what scripture invites us into is
- 4:06better than the kind of common assumption that
- 4:10we might run into in our Christian subculture.
- 4:12OK, so I'm going to say what all
- 4:14four myths are and then we're going to
- 4:16start digging into them.
- 4:16OK, so myth number one, you only have
- 4:20one lifelong calling.
- 4:22Myth number two, calling is first and foremost
- 4:25about what God wants you to do.
- 4:28Myth number three, calling and passion are the
- 4:31same thing.
- 4:32Myth number four, calling is about what God
- 4:34wants, not what I want.
- 4:37OK, so myth number one, you only have
- 4:39one lifelong calling.
- 4:41Sometimes when we talk about calling, we'll ask
- 4:44the question, what is my calling?
- 4:46In the singular, as though there's only one
- 4:49calling that we have and we sometimes envision
- 4:51it as this is one thing that I'm
- 4:53supposed to do and kind of build my
- 4:55life around doing that one thing and that
- 4:58that's what I'm supposed to do.
- 5:00What we see in scripture is that God
- 5:02often gives people callings that change over time.
- 5:05So just one simple example of this, Nehemiah.
- 5:09Nehemiah, he says in Nehemiah chapter two, that
- 5:12God put it into his heart to go
- 5:14and rebuild the wall of Jerusalem.
- 5:16This was during the period of the exile.
- 5:17There wasn't much leadership in Jerusalem.
- 5:20Nehemiah was in the the Babylonian context of
- 5:23the exile, but he had gone and visited
- 5:26Jerusalem and seen that the walls had been
- 5:28burned down and he had a heart to
- 5:30go and rebuild them.
- 5:33OK, how long did it take to rebuild
- 5:35those walls?
- 5:36Well, let's go Nehemiah chapter six, verses 15
- 5:39through 16.
- 5:40So the wall of Jerusalem was finished in
- 5:4252 days.
- 5:43It only took 52 days.
- 5:45Now, it was a story of God's miraculous
- 5:47provision.
- 5:47That's that's part of what makes the book
- 5:48of Nehemiah is such a compelling story of
- 5:52divine provision and the purpose and calling of
- 5:55God in Nehemiah's life and for the whole
- 5:56nation of Israel.
- 5:57But rebuilding the wall, that part of the
- 5:59call, that only took 52 days and then
- 6:02it was done.
- 6:02And then Nehemiah had to move on to
- 6:03other things, like learning how to how to
- 6:04organize community life in Jerusalem, etc.
- 6:07Similarly, we might think of somebody like Mary,
- 6:10Luke chapter one, verses 30 through 31.
- 6:13But the angel said to her, do not
- 6:14be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with
- 6:17God.
- 6:17You will conceive and give birth to a
- 6:19son.
- 6:19And you were to call him Jesus.
- 6:22OK, now, Mary obviously in some ways had
- 6:24a lifelong calling to be Jesus's mother from
- 6:26that point forward, but even in the passage
- 6:28itself, it's talking about the stages of that,
- 6:30like you will conceive and give birth to
- 6:32a son.
- 6:33And then obviously after giving birth, there's the
- 6:35infant stage and the toddler stage.
- 6:37And then Jesus was a boy and then
- 6:38Jesus was a man.
- 6:39And motherhood changes a lot during all of
- 6:41those stages.
- 6:42As any mother knows.
- 6:43And so even if you do have a
- 6:44calling that's longer term, exactly what that calling,
- 6:47what form it takes is going to shape
- 6:49or it's going to change shape over time.
- 6:52You are going to to mature and change
- 6:54during that whole journey.
- 6:56And that's OK.
- 6:57So God may give you a calling that
- 6:59lasts a long time.
- 7:00He may give you a calling that lasts
- 7:0152 days.
- 7:02He may give you a calling that's even
- 7:03shorter than that.
- 7:04And it may change over time.
- 7:05And that's OK.
- 7:06That's what we see in scripture.
- 7:07So we should have a flexibility about calling.
- 7:10Again, remember, voca, voice.
- 7:12We need to continually listen for God's voice
- 7:14as he may shift what he's calling us
- 7:17to do or where he's calling us to
- 7:18go.
- 7:19OK, myth number two, calling is first and
- 7:22foremost about what God wants you to do.
- 7:26Often, this is the way that people phrase
- 7:27the question, right?
- 7:28So like if I'm talking with Christian teenagers
- 7:30or college students, they'll often say sometimes with
- 7:33some measure of anxiety, what does God want
- 7:35me to do with my life?
- 7:36What am I supposed to do?
- 7:38Now, obviously, we do a lot of things
- 7:39in life and God can call us to
- 7:41do things, but it's interesting when you go
- 7:43to the New Testament and you look for
- 7:45the times that the word calling or call
- 7:47is used, usually it's not talking about something
- 7:51that we do.
- 7:52It's talking about something bigger and richer than
- 7:54that.
- 7:55So let me give just a couple examples.
- 7:56Again, Philippians 3, 14, Paul writes, I press
- 8:00on toward the goal for the prize of
- 8:02the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.
- 8:06OK, so so Paul says that there's a
- 8:08call, but what is the call?
- 8:10It's the upward call of God in Christ
- 8:13Jesus.
- 8:13OK, we'll come back to that.
- 8:15Another passage also by Paul, Romans chapter one,
- 8:18verse seven to all in Rome who are
- 8:20loved by God and called to be his
- 8:22holy people.
- 8:23Grace and peace to you from God, our
- 8:25father and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
- 8:27What's the calling?
- 8:29It's that the people are called to be
- 8:31his holy people or another translation puts it
- 8:33called to be saints.
- 8:35It's more about a call to be someone,
- 8:39to be a certain kind of human being
- 8:41than to accomplish a specific set of tasks.
- 8:44That upward call of God in Christ Jesus
- 8:47is ultimately a call to God himself.
- 8:50We are in Christ.
- 8:51We're in union with God in Christ, drawing
- 8:55close to him and becoming holy, becoming set
- 8:58apart for him, living lives where our character
- 9:00reflects the character of God.
- 9:02The first and primary and most important call
- 9:06of our lives is not a to do
- 9:08calling.
- 9:09It's a to be calling.
- 9:10We are called to be by God's grace
- 9:12more and more like Jesus over time.
- 9:16And that also takes a little bit of
- 9:18the pressure off of the doing, because if
- 9:21we're on that journey of growing in Christlike
- 9:24character, then whatever we do, we're going to
- 9:27we're going to do that by God's grace
- 9:29with with Christlike character and hopefully more and
- 9:31more that way over time.
- 9:32And so whatever we do, it will be
- 9:34something that is an expression of love for
- 9:36God and love for other people.
- 9:38It will be something that's meaningful in that
- 9:39way as a, as a form of service
- 9:41to other people and as a way to
- 9:42honor God.
- 9:43And so the what kind of can change
- 9:46over time as long as the who is
- 9:49becoming more like Jesus, so that can take
- 9:51a little bit of the pressure off where
- 9:52it's not like if you land the what
- 9:54wrong, oh, you're sunk and you didn't get
- 9:55the right thing.
- 9:56And then it's all problematic and bad.
- 9:58Like, no, no, no.
- 9:59As long as you're just becoming more like
- 10:01Jesus, that, that grace is going to kind
- 10:03of fill in to all the little details
- 10:05of the what, like, like syrup, filling all
- 10:08the little spaces in a waffle.
- 10:09That's the image that came to mind for
- 10:11some reason, but, uh, you know, God wants
- 10:13to, to, to bring that Holy spirit syrup
- 10:15and saturate all the little portions of your
- 10:18vocational life.
- 10:20Okay.
- 10:21Uh, myth number three, calling and passion are
- 10:24the same thing.
- 10:25You might know that quote, uh, do what
- 10:27you love.
- 10:27You'll never work a day in your life.
- 10:28This is kind of in the water in
- 10:30our broader American culture, this idea that you
- 10:32should follow your passion.
- 10:33You should do what you love.
- 10:34You should find a way to get paid
- 10:36for things that you just really love doing.
- 10:38And because that's so much in our American
- 10:40culture, we can sometimes get confused and try
- 10:42and kind of Christianize it or combine it
- 10:44with language about calling and think that like,
- 10:46oh, the things that I'm just really passionate
- 10:49about, that must be my calling and hopefully
- 10:51it goes along with a paid full-time
- 10:53job to do those things.
- 10:55And when you look at scripture, God's science
- 10:57calls people to do things that are very
- 10:59unpleasant and not particularly enjoyable.
- 11:01Um, so obviously that's not the only kind
- 11:03of calling that God gives.
- 11:05Uh, but I think about, uh, Ezekiel, uh,
- 11:08when was the last time you had a
- 11:09chance to check out Ezekiel four really weird
- 11:12passage.
- 11:13Uh, it makes sense.
- 11:14God's kind of having Ezekiel engage in a
- 11:16kind of almost like street theater as a
- 11:18prophecy against the people of Israel and Judah
- 11:21for the that they've hardened their hearts and
- 11:23turned away from God.
- 11:24But what he has Ezekiel do is lie
- 11:26down on his side for 390 days to
- 11:29talk about the sin of Israel and only
- 11:31eat, uh, like, you know, a limited amount
- 11:33of food, uh, beans and barley bread.
- 11:36And he has to cook it over cow
- 11:37dung during that time.
- 11:38And then he flips and he lies on
- 11:40his other side for 40 days to talk
- 11:41about the sin of Judah in the same
- 11:42way.
- 11:44That doesn't sound like, you know, do what
- 11:46you love and we'll never work a day
- 11:48in your life.
- 11:48At least not to me.
- 11:49I do not have a passion for cooking
- 11:50lentils and baking barley bread over cow dung
- 11:53to prophetically express the judgment of God.
- 11:56Okay.
- 11:56But that was what God had Ezekiel do.
- 11:59And that was for that period of time,
- 12:01Ezekiel's calling from God.
- 12:02That was the voice of God speaking to
- 12:05him.
- 12:05He could discern God's voice.
- 12:07And thankfully Ezekiel obeyed.
- 12:09And that was an expression of God's judgment,
- 12:10which we know served God's purposes in his
- 12:13generation.
- 12:13So God may not call us to do
- 12:15that specific unpleasant thing, but God may call
- 12:18us to do things that are really hard,
- 12:19really difficult that aren't particularly gratifying and certainly
- 12:22may not be our particular passions.
- 12:24I remember talking with an academic leader.
- 12:26Once he had a position of provost at
- 12:28a Christian college.
- 12:29And, uh, and I, I said, you know,
- 12:31uh, what was that like for you?
- 12:32And he said, well, it was a calling.
- 12:35And you can kind of tell from the
- 12:37way he said it, that, uh, there had
- 12:39been some real sacrifice in, uh, in that,
- 12:41that step of obedience for him to take
- 12:43that role.
- 12:43He actually would have preferred to remain a
- 12:45professor and focus on research and teaching, which
- 12:47is what he was doing before, but he
- 12:48felt called by God to step into that
- 12:50administrative role.
- 12:52Uh, another example from scripture, we think about
- 12:55Jesus's conversation with Peter.
- 12:57Uh, this is from John chapter 21.
- 12:58It's often called Peter's reinstatement.
- 13:00Uh, this is after Peter denied Jesus, Jesus
- 13:03kind of restoring him, reestablishing both their friendship
- 13:06and his call to be an apostle.
- 13:08And part of what Jesus says, this is
- 13:10in, uh, starting in verse 17, he says,
- 13:25Jesus said this to indicate the kind of
- 13:27death by which Peter would glorify God.
- 13:29Then he said to him, follow me.
- 13:34Jesus really spells it out there.
- 13:36He says, sometimes following me involves being led
- 13:41where you do not want to go.
- 13:43That's, that's the exact opposite of what Jesus
- 13:45said.
- 13:45Of assuming that we'll just get to do
- 13:46what we love all the time.
- 13:48And so we need to have an openness
- 13:50to discerning the voice of God, even when
- 13:52it tells us to hard and challenging things
- 13:54that we may not be particularly passionate about
- 13:56and trusting that when we lean into that
- 13:59call and obedience, that it will still serve
- 14:01God's purposes.
- 14:02Okay.
- 14:03But alongside that, this combating this fourth myth
- 14:06is really important.
- 14:07So the fourth myth is calling is about
- 14:09what God wants, not what I want.
- 14:12Okay.
- 14:13Now that might sound almost like a restatement
- 14:14of the true version that I just gave
- 14:16for number three, right?
- 14:17That like, Hey, we, we gotta be willing
- 14:18to do what God says.
- 14:19And if it's not what we want, but
- 14:22here's the thing.
- 14:24Desire can also be part of how God
- 14:26communicates his voice.
- 14:29Uh, the, the Lord is the one who
- 14:31imagined desire.
- 14:32The Lord is the one who made us
- 14:34with, with bodies and souls and minds that
- 14:35have desires.
- 14:37And so if we really consistently desire something,
- 14:40we can pay attention to that.
- 14:42Now it doesn't automatically mean that the desire
- 14:44is good or should be fulfilled, but it's
- 14:46coming from somewhere and we can pay attention
- 14:48to it.
- 14:49Um, and, and we see this even in,
- 14:50for example, that Nehemiah language.
- 14:53So, uh, going back to Nehemiah chapter two,
- 14:56um, when Nehemiah is, uh, still in, uh,
- 15:01uh, exile, he's talking to King Artaxerxes, right?
- 15:05And he, uh, has a really sad appearance
- 15:08on his face.
- 15:09And so this is verse two.
- 15:10So the King asked me, why does your
- 15:12face look so sad when you were not
- 15:14ill?
- 15:14This can be nothing but sadness of heart.
- 15:17So there's this like emotional dynamic of grief
- 15:20that Nehemiah is experiencing.
- 15:22And then later on in, uh, in the
- 15:24same chapter, Nehemiah says that I had not
- 15:27told anyone what my God had put in
- 15:29my heart to do for Jerusalem.
- 15:32This is the language of desire.
- 15:35Nehemiah clearly has a desire to rebuild the
- 15:37wall of Jerusalem.
- 15:38And yet he's saying that God put that
- 15:40desire in his heart.
- 15:42And so as we're discerning what the voice
- 15:45of God is telling us, we should actually
- 15:46pay attention to our desires.
- 15:48Those are part of the puzzle that might
- 15:50lead us toward obedience.
- 15:52Now there's a, there's a paradox there, right?
- 15:54Because obviously God can tell us to do
- 15:56things we don't want to do.
- 15:57And if what we want, if what we
- 15:59desire is also part of how he communicates
- 16:00to us, it's, it's not always immediately clear
- 16:03what the right thing to do is.
- 16:05That's why we need community.
- 16:06We need other help.
- 16:06We need guidance.
- 16:07We need prayer in order to make those
- 16:09kinds of life choices.
- 16:10But we shouldn't have a simplistic attitude either
- 16:12direction, right?
- 16:13We shouldn't have the attitude of a kind
- 16:14of health and wealth.
- 16:15I get to do what I want.
- 16:16That's always what God wants for me.
- 16:17Nor should we have an attitude of, Oh,
- 16:19what I want doesn't matter.
- 16:20I should just ignore that and suppress that.
- 16:22Rather, we need to pay attention to our
- 16:24desires while holding them open-handedly as we
- 16:27discern what God wants us to do.
- 16:29That's how we find out what our calling
- 16:30is for the next season of life.
- 16:35Lord Jesus, help us to hold our desires
- 16:37loosely and openly.
- 16:40Help us to hear your voice clearly so
- 16:43that we can answer your call.
- 16:46Help us to keep answering it again and
- 16:48again, to keep listening to your voice again
- 16:49and again, to become the kind of people
- 16:52you want us to be and to do
