- 1:56Speaker 2: you know what I'm saying, back in your day when
- 1:57Speaker 2: y'all was playing and the fans could legally be betting
- 2:00Speaker 2: on y'all game or tapping to the marketplace as y'all playing?
- 2:02Speaker 2: I know y'all used to have the side bets back
- 2:04Speaker 2: in the day and stuff like that. Now they get
- 2:06Speaker 2: on line with it.
- 2:07Speaker 3: The prediction markets and all the semantics and all that.
- 2:11Speaker 4: But it's funny.
- 2:12Speaker 3: The first time I really realized the impact that gambling had,
- 2:16Speaker 3: we were playing the Knicks in New York. And Ernie Grunfeld,
- 2:19Speaker 3: former general manager and president of the Bucks, was sitting
- 2:22Speaker 3: next to me. And we were winning by seven, nine,
- 2:25Speaker 3: 11 or whatever. And then they scored a couple of
- 2:27Speaker 3: buckets and they were still down like five or six
- 2:30Speaker 3: and the crowd went crazy.
- 2:31Speaker 4: I was like, man, what are they cheering about, man?
- 2:33Speaker 3: We're going to win the game.
- 2:34Speaker 4: It's three seconds left. covered the spread.
- 2:36Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 2:37Speaker 2: Damn.
- 2:37Speaker 3: Okay, okay.
- 2:39Speaker 1: What year was this?
- 2:40Speaker 3: This is 77, 78.
- 2:42Speaker 1: Damn.
- 2:42Speaker 2: That's been going on for a while now. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 2:46Speaker 4: They covered the spread.
- 2:48Speaker 3: It's New York. New York fans are notorious for being
- 2:52Speaker 3: big time gamblers. But no, it's, you know, and as
- 2:55Speaker 3: we've seen with some of the players that Well, I
- 2:58Speaker 3: don't want to go. I don't want to go.
- 3:01Speaker 1: I don't want to go. I don't want to go.
- 3:02Speaker 1: I don't want to go. I don't want to go.
- 3:03Speaker 1: I don't want to go. I don't want to go.
- 3:05Speaker 3: I don't want to go. But, I mean, you know.
- 3:07Speaker 1: Shout out to John St. Porter, man. You're welcome, family.
- 3:09Speaker 4: It's an interesting road to travel, you know.
- 3:12Speaker 2: Yeah. Yeah.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And with that being said, shout out to Kelsey, baby.
- 3:16Speaker 1: Use that promo code GLUB520.
- 3:17Speaker 2: It's 25 off when you put 25 down.
- 3:20Speaker 1: It's crazy.
- 3:20Speaker 2: When I was on the Bucs, maybe you remember. You
- 3:24Speaker 2: remember when the chant for Bobby started?
- 3:25Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Like, Bobby, Bobby.
- 3:28Speaker 2: It was because of a gambling bet. I mean, because
- 3:31Speaker 2: he needed like two rebounds.
- 3:33Speaker 1: Yeah, not on Bobby. Not on Bobby.
- 3:37Speaker 2: They subbed me. I was in the game, and me
- 3:40Speaker 2: and Bobby was in, and I stole a rebound. Not stole,
- 3:43Speaker 2: but it came to me. But Bobby needed two more,
- 3:45Speaker 2: and they subbed Bobby out. So they started chanting, Bobby.
- 3:48Speaker 2: And me and Bobby, we out, and we thinking they
- 3:50Speaker 2: just love Bobby.
- 3:51Speaker 3: We like, you play. They like.
- 3:53Speaker 1: Walked to the tunnel. They like, Teague, you're dumb.
- 3:56Speaker 3: Do a rebound.
- 3:57Speaker 1: They started cussing me out.
- 3:59Speaker 2: And that's the first time I knew that gambling was crazy.
- 4:01Speaker 4: Can I tell my Jeff Teague story?
- 4:03Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, please. I'll be here.
- 4:05Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 4:05Speaker 4: So anyway, so Jeff was, you know, I didn't know Jeff.
- 4:08Speaker 4: He was walking around. So y'all not familiar with.
- 4:13Speaker 3: This movie with Gregory Peck and Atticus Finch. I'm going
- 4:18Speaker 3: blank on the name of it now, but there was
- 4:19Speaker 3: a character in the movie played by Robert Duvall. Boo Radley,
- 4:21Speaker 3: who just kind of walked around, didn't say a word,
- 4:24Speaker 3: in the cut all the time.
- 4:26Speaker 4: So that was Jeff with the buddy. Didn't say a
- 4:27Speaker 4: whole lot.
- 4:28Speaker 3: We never really interacted. And playing against Atlanta in the playoffs.
- 4:35Speaker 3: We were down 3-2 at one point. They were doing
- 4:39Speaker 3: some work on us. So Coach Bud played you in
- 4:43Speaker 3: game five, about three minutes. But I could still see,
- 4:47Speaker 3: I think you were like 33 years old or whatever
- 4:49Speaker 3: at the time.
- 4:50Speaker 4: But he was quicker than everybody out there.
- 4:52Speaker 3: And so I went on Twitter and I said, look,
- 4:54Speaker 3: we need to play Jeff Teague in game six. He
- 4:57Speaker 3: can be a problem for the defenders of Atlanta. And
- 5:00Speaker 3: so on Twitter, they killed me. Are you crazy, Marcus?
- 5:04Speaker 3: He's washed up. He has nothing left. And then they
- 5:07Speaker 3: came up with a term that I never heard of
- 5:10Speaker 3: called ratio. Yo, Marcus, you got ratio. So you got ratio.
- 5:13Speaker 3: I respected your opinion until you mentioned Jeff T.
- 5:16Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 5:23Speaker 3: They were killing you. It made me like, damn, maybe
- 5:26Speaker 3: I don't know what to do. Kill them.
- 5:29Speaker 1: Maybe. I said, no, no.
- 5:31Speaker 3: But I stayed. I said, look, he can help us.
- 5:33Speaker 3: And so game six, Bud played you like 12 minutes.
- 5:36Speaker 3: He had like 11 points. But just kind of changed
- 5:39Speaker 3: the energy around. And they came back to me after
- 5:41Speaker 3: that like, oh, we apologize, man. You knew what you
- 5:45Speaker 3: was about to do.
- 5:47Speaker 1: I appreciate that.
- 5:50Speaker 4: That's my Jeff Teague story.
- 5:51Speaker 3: But they killed me, man.
- 5:53Speaker 1: Jeff Teague, come on.
- 5:54Speaker 3: Are you crazy?
- 5:55Speaker 1: What's up, man?
- 5:56Speaker 3: You got nothing left.
- 5:57Speaker 2: That is hilarious to find out that OG was behind
- 5:59Speaker 2: Game 16. Oh, he was the reason.
- 6:01Speaker 1: He was the reason. We've been talking about that shit
- 6:03Speaker 1: on the show.
- 6:03Speaker 3: What's that? Yeah.
- 6:04Speaker 1: Like the game six when he, you know.
- 6:06Speaker 3: His little sprinklers like that.
- 6:08Speaker 1: That's fire. You put that in there.
- 6:10Speaker 3: You can just watch, especially when you've been around the
- 6:12Speaker 3: game for as long as I have. You could just see,
- 6:14Speaker 3: you know, and I'm 33. I didn't really know. He
- 6:17Speaker 3: was still that quick, and I saw him do a
- 6:18Speaker 3: couple things and get by people real easy.
- 6:20Speaker 4: I'm like, oh, yeah, he's still got a lot of quickness.
- 6:22Speaker 1: I appreciate that, man.
- 6:23Speaker 4: Anyway, that's my Jeff Tease story, man.
- 6:25Speaker 3: Got a ratio, and I got killed on Twitter.
- 6:28Speaker 2: He does balls for sure, man. Shop club, 520.com to
- 6:32Speaker 2: get your merchants going. Now, we got a special guest
- 6:33Speaker 2: in the building, as usual. Introducing last to my far left,
- 6:36Speaker 2: we got my dog, Bishop B. Henn out the prayer leaves.
- 6:38Speaker 1: How you doing, Nasty? Cool, Nasty. Y'all know I don't
- 6:40Speaker 1: even watch movies or nothing like that. This is... My
- 6:43Speaker 1: dad loves.
- 6:44Speaker 3: You, bro.
- 6:45Speaker 1: Killer Mockingbird.
- 6:46Speaker 4: Killer Mockingbird.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 6:47Speaker 3: That's the movie.
- 6:48Speaker 4: Killer Mockingbird just finally came out. Yeah.
- 6:50Speaker 1: But no, I'm glad about this one right here.
- 6:52Speaker 4: Appreciate you, man.
- 6:53Speaker 1: I'm probably going to be excited. Still to my right,
- 6:55Speaker 1: my dog, young Nacho, young Teague. How you what?
- 6:57Speaker 2: It's already getting started, man. He got stories for you, man.
- 7:00Speaker 2: He put it in the air so I get some PT, man.
- 7:02Speaker 2: It's about to be a great, great.
- 7:04Speaker 1: Come on, man. We got another Bucks legend in the building.
- 7:07Speaker 1: The real legend. The real legend.
- 7:10Speaker 2: OG here with the book out right now, the Crenshaw Chronicles, man.
- 7:13Speaker 2: The OG, one of our favorite people, man.
- 7:15Speaker 3: Mr.
- 7:15Speaker 1: Marcus Johnson, big dog. We appreciate you sliding on this, man,
- 7:17Speaker 1: for sure.
- 7:18Speaker 3: Well, look, you know, and I'm probably going to get
- 7:19Speaker 3: in trouble with Josiah for saying this.
- 7:21Speaker 1: Shouts at Joe.
- 7:21Speaker 3: It's actually my favorite. I mean, it's actually my favorite.
- 7:26Speaker 3: I mean, Gills Arena is a close second, you know,
- 7:29Speaker 3: and then All the Smoke and all that. But I
- 7:31Speaker 3: was on All the Smoke a few days ago, Gills
- 7:34Speaker 3: Arena a couple of days.
- 7:35Speaker 4: So this is like the big trifecta for me. Oh, man,
- 7:37Speaker 4: we appreciate it.
- 7:38Speaker 3: The big crooner right here.
- 7:40Speaker 4: So I'm really, really glad.
- 7:41Speaker 1: Yeah, we mess with all of them, too. They're my guys.
- 7:43Speaker 1: They're family, man. Yeah, yeah.
- 7:45Speaker 3: I sat next to a random white guy on the
- 7:47Speaker 3: plane out here. He was the USC younger guy. We
- 7:50Speaker 3: were just kind of talking about different things. And so
- 7:52Speaker 3: I told him what I was getting ready to do
- 7:54Speaker 3: in Indianapolis at 520.
- 7:55Speaker 4: I love that show.
- 7:56Speaker 3: Make sure you tell those guys to stay honest, just
- 7:59Speaker 3: to keep that honesty.
- 8:00Speaker 1: Oh, man. I appreciate that. Just a random dude.
- 8:02Speaker 4: So you guys, your reach is having an effect out there.
- 8:06Speaker 2: Nah, the love is real, man. Shout out to our guy, Josiah.
- 8:08Speaker 2: He hit us up. He was just like, pops have been.
- 8:10Speaker 2: I was like, I couldn't believe it. I was like, what?
- 8:13Speaker 1: He walked in? I was like, damn.
- 8:16Speaker 3: The stories, I mean, y'all just, like I told somebody,
- 8:19Speaker 3: y'all have too much fun sometimes. Y'all just.
- 8:22Speaker 4: A lot of stuff.
- 8:23Speaker 3: Goes over my head. I don't really know exactly what
- 8:26Speaker 3: you're talking about, but it's just fun to watch you
- 8:28Speaker 3: guys have so much fun doing this podcast.
- 8:31Speaker 1: I appreciate that for sure. You as well.
- 8:33Speaker 2: Obviously, man, OG, first Midwest kids, we couldn't fathom what
- 8:36Speaker 2: it's like growing up on the West Coast, let alone L.A.
- 8:38Speaker 2: What was it like growing up in L.A., especially hooping
- 8:40Speaker 2: out there? A lot of killers, high tradition. What was
- 8:42Speaker 2: it like growing up in L.A., getting to it?
- 8:44Speaker 3: Well, I mean, so historically speaking, you know, just being
- 8:49Speaker 3: a basketball player guy i mean my name marcus i
- 8:54Speaker 3: was named after marcus haynes a harlem globetrotter my father
- 8:56Speaker 3: saw him play down in shreveport louisiana in 1955 he
- 8:58Speaker 3: said if i got a son yeah he they had
- 9:02Speaker 3: a player by the name of marcus haynes so he
- 9:03Speaker 3: said if i got a son i'm gonna name him
- 9:05Speaker 3: after the greatest ball player i've ever seen marcus haynes
- 9:07Speaker 3: bobby knight has said the same thing about marcus haynes
- 9:09Speaker 3: could be just a dribbling phenom back in the day
- 9:12Speaker 3: and so that and my father was a high school
- 9:14Speaker 3: coach uh coach at natchitoches central high school jeff jeff
- 9:17Speaker 3: johnson had a lot of success at running the players
- 9:19Speaker 3: who played for him Back in the late 50s, early 60s,
- 9:22Speaker 3: they'd tell me he was ahead of his time and blah, blah, blah.
- 9:24Speaker 3: So he gave me that foundation, you know, from a
- 9:26Speaker 3: basketball family, like I'm sure with you. You get the footwork,
- 9:28Speaker 3: you get the skills, you get all that fundamental knowledge
- 9:32Speaker 3: of how to play the game. So for me growing up,
- 9:35Speaker 3: right in the wooden era, getting started with Gail Goodrich
- 9:38Speaker 3: and Walt Hazard in 64, they won 10 and 12 years.
- 9:41Speaker 3: So that was a big thing. Kareem, Lou Alcindor coming
- 9:43Speaker 3: to L.A. in 1965, 66. And dominating the way he did.
- 9:48Speaker 3: He had 56 points his first game as a sophomore.
- 9:52Speaker 3: Freshman couldn't play. He dropped 56 on USC and probably
- 9:56Speaker 3: out of the 20 field goals he made in that
- 9:58Speaker 3: game or so, 76. dunks. But he wound up banning
- 10:02Speaker 3: the dunk shot after that season. Couldn't dunk for 10
- 10:05Speaker 3: years until going into my senior year in 1976, 77. Damn.
- 10:08Speaker 3: And then the Lakers were always bridesmaids to the Celtics.
- 10:11Speaker 3: Bill Russell and that crew, they were in the midst
- 10:13Speaker 3: of that great winning streak. But Elgin Bailey was my guy.
- 10:16Speaker 3: He was kind of the predecessor to Dr. J in
- 10:19Speaker 3: terms of just hang time and all the acrobatics in
- 10:21Speaker 3: the midair. Jerry West is somebody that, you know, Mr.
- 10:24Speaker 3: Clutch knocking down jumper. I've watched him literally hit like five, six,
- 10:28Speaker 3: seven jumpers at the buzzer to win games back in
- 10:31Speaker 3: those days. So it was just a it was a
- 10:33Speaker 3: magical time for basketball to grow up in L.A.
- 10:36Speaker 4: At that point. And, you know, I played against some
- 10:39Speaker 4: some really, really talented players.
- 10:41Speaker 3: We had a great. Summer League at Trade Tech College downtown,
- 10:45Speaker 3: played against Sidney Wicks and Curtis Rowan. But the best
- 10:48Speaker 3: player of all that I played against was this dude
- 10:50Speaker 3: named Arkansas Red, who went to college in Arkansas.
- 10:53Speaker 4: But he averaged like 35 a game in NAIA. I
- 10:57Speaker 4: think it was the last guy.
- 10:58Speaker 3: Cut on the Olympic team in 1968 or so, but
- 11:00Speaker 3: you know, he was, he was.
- 11:01Speaker 4: He, he, he'd be drinking alcohol.
- 11:03Speaker 3: He'd get out there and pull Brandy. He was dropping
- 11:08Speaker 3: forties and fifties out there, like six, one, six, two,
- 11:11Speaker 3: but had the Swedish jumper. Yeah. Another dude, David airplane
- 11:15Speaker 3: pain was, it was then. So airplane was his nickname.
- 11:18Speaker 3: Another NAIA player, about six, four, but jumped higher than
- 11:21Speaker 3: anybody I've ever seen in my life. And, uh, I
- 11:23Speaker 3: was like 15 years old playing against him. He came
- 11:25Speaker 3: down and, And just took off like inside the free
- 11:28Speaker 3: throw line. I tried to take a charge and just
- 11:31Speaker 3: nuts all in my foil. Just dunked on him. I
- 11:35Speaker 3: got him back about six, seven years later when I
- 11:38Speaker 3: was like a second or third year pro. We were
- 11:40Speaker 3: playing at Crenshaw in the same summer league, the Joe
- 11:43Speaker 3: Weakley Run, Shoot, and Dunk.
- 11:44Speaker 4: That was the name of that summer league.
- 11:45Speaker 3: And he tried to stop me at the rim, and
- 11:47Speaker 3: I got him out the way and, bam, threw down
- 11:49Speaker 3: on him.
- 11:50Speaker 4: But he was like 28, 29 at that time. I
- 11:51Speaker 4: was like a young Sprott, 23.
- 11:53Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 11:54Speaker 3: It was a lot of fun.
- 11:55Speaker 1: A lot of fun.
- 11:56Speaker 4: And basketball was the passion, as you can relate to. Absolutely.
- 12:01Speaker 1: Now, I've seen you, obviously, shout out to Gil Zarin.
- 12:02Speaker 2: You was on there talking about, you know what I'm saying,
- 12:04Speaker 2: going to school was a little bit different than your
- 12:05Speaker 2: traditional high school. Some of them jackets was a little
- 12:08Speaker 2: bit heavier than them.
- 12:10Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 12:11Speaker 4: Yeah, Chris, that was no joke. You know, it's interesting
- 12:13Speaker 4: because I had a great time.
- 12:14Speaker 3: I never had. And I talked about the surprise locker
- 12:19Speaker 3: sweep in 1973 and finding 25 handguns. But there was
- 12:23Speaker 3: never any, you know, school shootings. It wasn't that was
- 12:26Speaker 3: all like. protection, like walking home. There was no metal detectors,
- 12:29Speaker 3: so you just walked in with what you had. And
- 12:31Speaker 3: we had armed security guards on campus One guy looked
- 12:35Speaker 3: like Richard Roundtree. His name was Shaft. He's in the
- 12:37Speaker 3: yearbook as Shaft.
- 12:38Speaker 4: That's what they call him.
- 12:41Speaker 3: They'd be suited and booted, but, you know, pieces in
- 12:44Speaker 3: their jacket and all that. And so, you know, it
- 12:46Speaker 3: was just, but that was just... That was normal. Yeah,
- 12:50Speaker 3: it wasn't a big deal. And if somebody would show
- 12:52Speaker 3: you a pistol sometime, like, look, you know, it's like, oh, yeah, okay.
- 12:57Speaker 3: But it really wasn't a big deal, you know, in
- 13:02Speaker 3: terms of just shootings and school violence. Now, you can
- 13:05Speaker 3: set your watch to it at nutrition and lunch. There's
- 13:07Speaker 3: going to be a fight or two or three at
- 13:10Speaker 3: lunch time. It was 3,200 kids. Oh, yeah.
- 13:12Speaker 4: 3,200 kids. It was new, built in 1968.
- 13:15Speaker 3: This is 1972, 71 when I got there. And so,
- 13:19Speaker 3: but the areas that we drew students from was the
- 13:22Speaker 3: east side of LA and Washington High School, Manor Arch, Fremont,
- 13:25Speaker 3: all the Jefferson, all the rough areas around the city.
- 13:30Speaker 4: And so I went to Dorsey as a 10th grader.
- 13:32Speaker 3: And I was a lot of Asians, a lot of
- 13:34Speaker 3: upscale African-Americans going to school there. So my mother didn't
- 13:37Speaker 3: want me to go to Crenshaw. Crenshaw was just rowdy
- 13:39Speaker 3: and she didn't want me to have anything to do
- 13:41Speaker 3: with Crenshaw. But my dad was like, No, he's going
- 13:43Speaker 3: to go to Crenshaw and play for a guy that
- 13:45Speaker 3: he'd been knowing from middle school. They talked together, Willie West,
- 13:48Speaker 3: who was coached there for 39 years, won 16 city championships,
- 13:52Speaker 3: eight state titles. And so that was the best move
- 13:54Speaker 3: for me in my life because Coach West would put
- 13:56Speaker 3: in as much work as you were willing to put in.
- 13:58Speaker 3: He'd meet you at the gym whenever you want to
- 13:59Speaker 3: meet and stay as long as you wanted to stay.
- 14:02Speaker 4: But L.A.
- 14:02Speaker 3: Was, man, it was a lot going on, dynamic. My
- 14:07Speaker 3: best friend growing up was a guy named James Lofton.
- 14:11Speaker 3: You know, we played every sport together. He was fast.
- 14:13Speaker 3: He could catch great hands. He wound up being an
- 14:15Speaker 3: NFL Hall of Famer for the Buffalo Bills and some
- 14:19Speaker 3: other teams that he played for. So the Green Bay
- 14:20Speaker 3: Packers is where he started out. So, you know, I
- 14:24Speaker 3: always like to tell this story. It was me, James,
- 14:26Speaker 3: and another kid named Carl Mosier, 8, 9, 10, 11,
- 14:29Speaker 3: 12 years old, hanging out together. James, Hall of Famer basketball, me,
- 14:35Speaker 3: five times. Hall of Fame finalists. I ain't made the
- 14:37Speaker 3: cut yet, but hey, whatever. But Carl Mosier was a
- 14:41Speaker 3: better athlete than both of us. Better athlete than both
- 14:43Speaker 3: of us. He was faster, better basketball player as a
- 14:45Speaker 3: point guard, better football player, was a quarterback. And for
- 14:49Speaker 3: one reason or another, you know, he kind of fell
- 14:50Speaker 3: by the wayside. And James and I kept it going.
- 14:53Speaker 3: That's hard.
- 14:55Speaker 2: I like to grow up with somebody that made it
- 14:57Speaker 2: to the... You know, he made it to the NBA.
- 14:59Speaker 2: He made it to the NFL. I know y'all conversations
- 15:02Speaker 2: got to be ridiculous.
- 15:03Speaker 1: Like, telling y'all stories growing up.
- 15:05Speaker 2: Like, y'all both being pros and, like, hanging out in
- 15:08Speaker 2: the summer at some point.
- 15:09Speaker 4: Well, and then the beauty of it was that he
- 15:11Speaker 4: played for the Packers. He was a year behind me.
- 15:14Speaker 3: And I was in Milwaukee. He was in Green Bay.
- 15:16Speaker 3: So he and his wife, I have down in Milwaukee.
- 15:18Speaker 4: We'd have dinner together and just rehash. He tells a
- 15:21Speaker 4: great story. Us playing together.
- 15:23Speaker 3: And I remember it vaguely, but like nine years old,
- 15:26Speaker 3: me and my dad was coaching our little nine-year-old team
- 15:29Speaker 3: at Jesse Owens Park.
- 15:30Speaker 4: Well, sports was back in the day. That's what Russell
- 15:32Speaker 4: Westbrook grew up at.
- 15:34Speaker 3: And so we're playing a game as nine-year-olds.
- 15:38Speaker 4: And my dad and I got there late, got there
- 15:41Speaker 4: at halftime.
- 15:42Speaker 3: So we were down, like, James says, like, you know,
- 15:44Speaker 3: 21 to 2 in the first half. And then when
- 15:46Speaker 3: I got there, we wound up winning, like, 27 to 23.
- 15:49Speaker 3: I had, like, all 25.
- 15:50Speaker 1: You were crazy. Touched it down.
- 15:54Speaker 4: Yeah, it was that kind of thing.
- 15:57Speaker 2: I want to ask, when did you know you was elite? Obviously,
- 15:59Speaker 2: special player, but when did you know, like, all right,
- 16:01Speaker 2: I'm better.
- 16:02Speaker 1: Right, was being a pro always a thing for you?
- 16:04Speaker 1: Was being a pro, like, something you grew up wanting
- 16:06Speaker 1: to be?
- 16:06Speaker 4: Always, always, man.
- 16:07Speaker 3: Just, again, just growing up with the Lakers, Elgin Baylor,
- 16:12Speaker 3: you go to the park and you do the head
- 16:14Speaker 3: twitch and everything he was doing back in the day,
- 16:16Speaker 3: trying to emulate his moves.
- 16:18Speaker 5: I mean.
- 16:20Speaker 4: I was MVP of every league I ever played in from.
- 16:25Speaker 3: I mean, I was in my, my dad was a coach.
- 16:30Speaker 3: So he's making sure, you know, I'll get my touches,
- 16:34Speaker 3: you know, but I was MVP from, from every, every
- 16:37Speaker 3: team I'd ever played. Now, now when I got to
- 16:39Speaker 3: high school at Dorsey, before I transferred to Crenshaw, I
- 16:43Speaker 3: had moved up half a grade, not because I was
- 16:44Speaker 3: really smart, but that was just kind of how the city,
- 16:47Speaker 3: They did away with mid-year graduation. So I was younger.
- 16:50Speaker 3: I was a 14-year-old 10th grader, which is crazy. But
- 16:53Speaker 3: you couldn't play varsity until you were 15 in L.A.
- 16:55Speaker 3: City at that point in time. So that was kind
- 16:57Speaker 3: of the adjustment period I had to kind of find myself.
- 16:59Speaker 3: But by the end of that season, I wound up
- 17:01Speaker 3: playing a couple of varsity games, despite the fact I
- 17:04Speaker 3: was only 14 years old. But, you know, again, I
- 17:08Speaker 3: credit my dad. My dad worked with me extensively in
- 17:11Speaker 3: the backyard to the point where it got on my
- 17:13Speaker 3: last nerve.
- 17:14Speaker 4: I don't know if it ever happened to you.
- 17:15Speaker 1: Oh, for sure. Oh, man.
- 17:16Speaker 3: I mean, it got to me. And even when I
- 17:19Speaker 3: was a pro, he still, hey, hey, come here.
- 17:21Speaker 4: Papa, stop it. Let me show you this spin move.
- 17:23Speaker 4: He tried to show me a spin move.
- 17:24Speaker 3: And then I'd fall and lose it down.
- 17:26Speaker 4: I'm like, you okay?
- 17:29Speaker 3: But inside, I'm just like, man, I'm in the NBA,
- 17:31Speaker 3: and you're still trying to show me what to do.
- 17:33Speaker 3: But he passed away in 2002, and, man, I wish
- 17:36Speaker 3: he was here now to– Just give me the same
- 17:38Speaker 3: type of guidance and all that.
- 17:40Speaker 4: So, but yeah, I've been, I've been, I've been good
- 17:42Speaker 4: for a while, man. I've been good for a while.
- 17:44Speaker 3: All right.
- 17:45Speaker 1: So I got a tough question. I asked everybody from
- 17:47Speaker 1: Cali this, who is the greatest player to come out
- 17:50Speaker 1: of LA?
- 17:51Speaker 3: Pro wise, pro wise OG.
- 17:51Speaker 4: I know, you know.
- 17:53Speaker 3: A lot of ball players.
- 17:53Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 17:54Speaker 1: Well, one name you'll hear is Raymond Lewis.
- 18:03Speaker 3: Raymond Lewis went to Bourbon Day High School. He's a
- 18:07Speaker 3: couple of years ahead of me. And this dude was
- 18:11Speaker 3: like Kyrie. I mean, handles, jumper, had it all. A
- 18:16Speaker 3: lot of guys came up under him. Lorenzo Romar, some
- 18:19Speaker 3: of the guys who made it through to the NBA,
- 18:21Speaker 3: Freeman Williams. But Raymond was the guy that went to
- 18:26Speaker 3: Cal State L.A. because they gave him a whole lot
- 18:28Speaker 3: of money. Jerry Tarkany, the one at Long Beach State.
- 18:31Speaker 3: With Cal State LA, gave him a car, Corvette, and
- 18:33Speaker 3: a lot of other things at that time.
- 18:35Speaker 2: In 1971.
- 18:35Speaker 1: But I think he led the nation in scoring.
- 18:37Speaker 3: He was averaging about 32, 33 a game as a sophomore.
- 18:42Speaker 2: They even had 32.9.
- 18:45Speaker 3: Yeah, it was, okay.
- 18:45Speaker 1: It was going crazy.
- 18:47Speaker 3: And then they played, and this was Cal State LA,
- 18:48Speaker 3: so they're not D1, they're like NAIA. They played against
- 18:51Speaker 3: Cal State Long Beach, who were nationally ranked on local TV.
- 18:55Speaker 3: Raymond had like 52, he had a jumper falling out
- 18:57Speaker 3: of bounds at the buzzer to win it, like Channel 9,
- 18:59Speaker 3: I'm sitting there watching it. But he, so, so, the
- 19:02Speaker 3: Raymond Lewis story, and I don't want to get too
- 19:04Speaker 3: long winded on this, but he got drafted by the Sixers,
- 19:08Speaker 3: number 20th, in.
- 19:08Speaker 4: 70, 71, somewhere in there, 72 maybe.
- 19:12Speaker 3: Doug Collins was just coming off the Olympic team, and
- 19:16Speaker 3: he was a golden boy.
- 19:17Speaker 4: He got drafted number one, number one pick.
- 19:18Speaker 3: He was making about $ 400, 000 or $ 500, 000 a year. Raymond
- 19:21Speaker 3: negotiated his own contract. He was getting like $ 50, 000. They
- 19:25Speaker 3: had a scrimmage. Raymond scored allegedly 55 to 60 points
- 19:29Speaker 3: and Doug Collins at halftime. at halftime.
- 19:33Speaker 2: And this is like, this is, this is, this.
- 19:37Speaker 6: Is, it started out at 30, then it went up
- 19:39Speaker 6: to 40, now it's like 55, it happened.
- 19:42Speaker 3: But the point is that Raymond walked out of camp.
- 19:44Speaker 3: He's like, shit, I just busted this dude up. He's
- 19:46Speaker 3: number one pick. He's making like 300,000. I'm making 50.
- 19:48Speaker 3: Y'all got to renegotiate my contract. He left camp, just
- 19:51Speaker 3: walked out. Never played in NBA again. Blackballed him and
- 19:55Speaker 3: he just never got another chance to play in the NBA.
- 19:59Speaker 3: Lorenzo Romar tells a story of talking to Gene Hsu
- 20:01Speaker 3: when he was a coach at San Antonio and Raymond
- 20:03Speaker 3: was in camp and Raymond was the last guy cut
- 20:05Speaker 3: and Lorenzo was asking Gene Hsu, was he good enough
- 20:08Speaker 3: to make the team?
- 20:09Speaker 4: He said he was the best player on the floor.
- 20:10Speaker 4: I said, well, why didn't you keep him? He's out
- 20:12Speaker 4: of my hands. There's nothing I can do.
- 20:14Speaker 1: All right, man.
- 20:16Speaker 2: Shout out to Kalshi, our new business partners, man. Listen,
- 20:19Speaker 2: it is an exchange where you can trade on any event.
- 20:21Speaker 1: Be here.
- 20:21Speaker 2: We ain't talking about just sports. We can go to
- 20:23Speaker 2: pop culture, politics, whatever, man. How you feeling?
- 20:26Speaker 1: I love it, man. You can do trades. You can
- 20:28Speaker 1: do politics. You know what I mean? The house calls.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It's up to you. Come on, man.
- 20:32Speaker 2: Mook, we ain't just talking about sports no more, man.
- 20:33Speaker 2: We can get into the BET Awards. We can go
- 20:35Speaker 2: see who got album of the year. College basketball coming up, man.
- 20:37Speaker 2: We can bet on Kentucky, too, man.
- 20:39Speaker 1: Oh, yeah. You know we got to tap in, man.
- 20:40Speaker 3: They covering everything across the.
- 20:42Speaker 2: Board, huh?
- 20:42Speaker 1: Yes, sir, man.
- 20:43Speaker 2: Let's get to it, too. Listen, man, for $ 25, you're
- 20:45Speaker 2: that promo code CLUB520. What do they get, man? They
- 20:48Speaker 2: get an extra $ 25. Yeah. You know what I mean?
- 20:50Speaker 2: So you can put that $ 25 towards Luka probably winning
- 20:53Speaker 2: MVP this year.
- 20:54Speaker 1: Get you some free chicken. Come on, man. You can
- 20:55Speaker 1: bet yes or no on the predictions. CLUB520, use that
- 20:58Speaker 1: promo code. Trade responsibly.
- 21:02Speaker 3: So in terms of guys who, you know, he was
- 21:05Speaker 3: a guy that was a non-NBA guy, but when you
- 21:07Speaker 3: talk to anybody from L.A., my age or a little
- 21:09Speaker 3: bit younger, a little bit older, they'll say Raymond Lewis
- 21:11Speaker 3: is the greatest ever. And you get no argument from me.
- 21:15Speaker 5: No, yeah.
- 21:15Speaker 3: He won championships every year. He busted ass in college.
- 21:19Speaker 3: He just didn't get a fair shot. Yeah, you know,
- 21:22Speaker 3: it was his attitude. He's from Watts and kind of just,
- 21:27Speaker 3: F this, I'm gone. You know, either you pay me or.
- 21:29Speaker 3: And so they wanted to make an example out of him,
- 21:31Speaker 3: and they did. But the point about Raymond, so fast forward,
- 21:36Speaker 3: so about five or six years, about 27 years old.
- 21:40Speaker 3: I'm maybe 23, 24. We're playing out at UCLA every day.
- 21:43Speaker 3: Will Chamberlain and Kiki Bandaway and Reggie Theus and all
- 21:46Speaker 3: these really, really good NBA ballplayers. Best defender in the league,
- 21:50Speaker 3: James Price. Jim Price from Louisville was there. And so
- 21:53Speaker 3: Raymond was trying to sue the league for– like antitrust
- 21:57Speaker 3: violations for blackballing him. So he wanted to get depositions
- 22:01Speaker 3: from some of the pros that he was good enough
- 22:03Speaker 3: to play in the NBA. So after he played with
- 22:05Speaker 3: us all summer, he asked me, would I give him
- 22:06Speaker 3: a deposition? Like, yeah, yeah, whatever you want. Where you
- 22:08Speaker 3: killing everybody out here? And at that time, you know,
- 22:11Speaker 3: he was drinking, had a little bit of a pot belly,
- 22:13Speaker 3: a little bit out of shape, but he was still
- 22:15Speaker 3: out there serving at 27, 28 years old. Wound up
- 22:18Speaker 3: dying of diabetes. He had a leg amputated, got depressed, and,
- 22:23Speaker 3: you know, alcohol and drugs kind of led to his undoing.
- 22:25Speaker 3: But last story, Nike's got a campaign about L.A. Legends, right?
- 22:30Speaker 1: Mm-hmm.
- 22:31Speaker 3: So they're shooting it at this park, Chevrolet Hills. I
- 22:32Speaker 3: take my son, Chris, who played at UCLA. Chris is
- 22:35Speaker 3: about 12 years old, 13 years old at the time.
- 22:38Speaker 3: We walk up. On the outdoor courts, we see Raymond.
- 22:40Speaker 3: He's got the bad leg from the diabetes, not amputated yet,
- 22:44Speaker 3: but he can't move around. So he's just standing still,
- 22:46Speaker 3: just shooting. Can't really get to the ball quick enough
- 22:49Speaker 3: until Chris go rebound for him. So I sit there,
- 22:51Speaker 3: I'm talking to Raymond. We're talking about the old times, talking, talking, talking.
- 22:54Speaker 3: Raymond's just steadily shooting. So we get done talking after
- 22:57Speaker 3: about 10, 12 minutes. And as I'm walking into the
- 22:59Speaker 3: gym to do what I had to do for that
- 23:01Speaker 3: promotional thing, Chris, my son, says to me, Dad, he
- 23:05Speaker 3: made 36 shots in a row.
- 23:06Speaker 4: He made 36 shots without missing. I was like, yeah,
- 23:08Speaker 4: I told you he could shoot.
- 23:10Speaker 3: He ain't said nothing.
- 23:11Speaker 4: So that was Ray Lou.
- 23:13Speaker 1: As far as you keeping his name alive.
- 23:15Speaker 4: But other pros, I mean, it's funny. I used to
- 23:18Speaker 4: be considered.
- 23:19Speaker 1: Gilbert said it was him.
- 23:20Speaker 3: Well, I used to be considered one of the top
- 23:21Speaker 3: five players in L.A. That was always my thing. It
- 23:24Speaker 3: was me and Sidney Wicks and these other guys that
- 23:27Speaker 3: Gil Goodrich, these old school guys. But then between Paul
- 23:30Speaker 3: Pierce out of Englewood, James Harden went to my middle school.
- 23:33Speaker 3: He went to Artesia High School, but I used to
- 23:35Speaker 3: teach James Harden when he was 17 at Arizona State
- 23:38Speaker 3: that he was the second best player to come out
- 23:39Speaker 3: of Audubon Middle School. I think he's surpassed me. I
- 23:44Speaker 3: don't think I can stake a claim to that anymore.
- 23:47Speaker 3: This is back when he was a 17-year-old freshman. But
- 23:49Speaker 3: between him and Kawhi, you know, the Inland Empire, Riverside. Yeah.
- 23:54Speaker 3: Paul George, you don't really, you know, Paul. So Paul
- 24:01Speaker 3: Pierce Ingle, we'll give that to him. But Russell Westbrook,
- 24:05Speaker 3: you know.
- 24:05Speaker 1: Shout out to Russ.
- 24:06Speaker 3: You got to give that to him. I mean, so
- 24:07Speaker 3: it's a lot of guys. So now I've bumped myself
- 24:09Speaker 3: down from top five to top ten.
- 24:12Speaker 1: Respect. That's respect.
- 24:13Speaker 4: You know, which is cool.
- 24:15Speaker 2: You named some names here. The first things first, we
- 24:17Speaker 2: got to talk about it. What was the Open Gym
- 24:18Speaker 2: Runs like with Will?
- 24:19Speaker 1: Will Chamberlain.
- 24:20Speaker 4: Oh, man. Will Chamberlain.
- 24:23Speaker 1: He was a real person, right?
- 24:24Speaker 4: Who?
- 24:24Speaker 3: Will.
- 24:25Speaker 1: What do you mean? Because DJ don't think he was.
- 24:27Speaker 1: I don't believe the 100-point game. I don't believe it.
- 24:30Speaker 3: He averaged like 40. He averaged 40-something a game one
- 24:34Speaker 3: year and finished like sixth or seventh in the MVP.
- 24:37Speaker 1: He was cheated. Bill Russell owes him. Rest in peace.
- 24:39Speaker 1: He owes him the MVP.
- 24:40Speaker 3: For the 50.
- 24:40Speaker 1: 50 and 25 don't get the MVP.
- 24:43Speaker 3: That was crazy. I mean, it was crazy. We speak
- 24:47Speaker 3: on Will.
- 24:48Speaker 1: We keep Will's name in line.
- 24:49Speaker 3: He finished behind Johnny Red Curd, this big slow-footed white dude.
- 24:53Speaker 3: He finished behind him for the MVP. So don't tell
- 24:56Speaker 3: me the writers weren't hating back in those days.
- 24:59Speaker 4: But Will played with us.
- 25:00Speaker 3: Will was about 44, 45 years old. Kept himself in
- 25:05Speaker 3: great shape playing beach volleyball all the time, chasing those
- 25:08Speaker 3: young girls.
- 25:09Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 25:12Speaker 3: But Will was cool.
- 25:15Speaker 4: I mean, he was the greatest dude to be around.
- 25:17Speaker 3: But when he played, you know, he would kind of
- 25:19Speaker 3: go half speed, wouldn't go all out. But we were
- 25:23Speaker 3: playing two on two after the run in the men's
- 25:25Speaker 3: gym out at UCLA one day. And so it was
- 25:28Speaker 3: me and Will against David Greenwood, who was the second
- 25:31Speaker 3: pick in the draft, 1979 or so.
- 25:34Speaker 4: This is the Magic Draft. Got picked after Magic, Chicago Bulls.
- 25:37Speaker 3: David was one of the greatest forwards in UCLA history. 6'10,
- 25:40Speaker 3: could shoot, had the sweetest jumper, could handle like a guard.
- 25:43Speaker 3: But it was before that was allowed. Big guy, get inside, rebound,
- 25:48Speaker 3: play good defense, interior defense. But David and Will are
- 25:52Speaker 3: going at it. And Will's just kind of half-speeding it.
- 25:55Speaker 3: So David is knocking down jumper after jumper. David passed
- 25:58Speaker 3: away a few years back. Rest in peace, David Greenwood.
- 26:00Speaker 3: But these talking shit, David kind of started like.
- 26:03Speaker 1: Yeah, big fella.
- 26:04Speaker 3: Too old, big fella. Swish, swish. So Wilt came up
- 26:10Speaker 3: to me and said, Marcus, pass me the ball every
- 26:12Speaker 3: single time. Wilt went down, posted him up, threw it
- 26:16Speaker 3: in to Wilt, bump him, turn, dunk. bump him, turn, dunk.
- 26:19Speaker 4: He dunked on him about seven or eight times.
- 26:21Speaker 3: Like a 45-year-old Wilt, just bam, but throwing it down hard,
- 26:24Speaker 3: just bumping him and bam. And David was like, walked up,
- 26:28Speaker 3: fuck you, Wilt. So when Wilt wanted to turn it on,
- 26:35Speaker 3: even at 44, 45 years old, now the other thing
- 26:38Speaker 3: he used to do, he used to hold court with
- 26:40Speaker 3: us outside the men's gym after the run. It was
- 26:42Speaker 3: a little grassy area, a self-kicking band. All these pros,
- 26:46Speaker 3: current pros, all-stars, great players, would sit there and just
- 26:49Speaker 3: kind of listen to Wilt talk about his career and
- 26:51Speaker 3: some of the things he did. I was in a
- 26:53Speaker 3: contract dispute myself with the Milwaukee Bucks, not getting paid enough.
- 26:57Speaker 3: And so Wilt told me, he's like, look, I used
- 26:59Speaker 3: to get in a contract dispute every year with Jack
- 27:01Speaker 3: Kent when I was with the Lakers. I'd tell him
- 27:04Speaker 3: I got a hamstring pull, ain't going to get well
- 27:05Speaker 3: until I get some more money. He's a little sore.
- 27:08Speaker 3: I mean, the only thing that's going to help it
- 27:10Speaker 3: is this contract. So when Bill Russell talks about he
- 27:14Speaker 3: asked for $ 1 more than Wilt, on a contract he signed,
- 27:17Speaker 3: Will was like, that wasn't bullshit. You know, he didn't
- 27:20Speaker 3: know that I went back in after he said that
- 27:22Speaker 3: and got, you know, 30,000 more on top of what
- 27:24Speaker 3: I was making already. So Will was, he was a
- 27:26Speaker 3: real astute businessman, but just a great guy to be around.
- 27:28Speaker 3: But he was real. He was real, man. He was,
- 27:30Speaker 3: when I think of the all-time greats, it bothers me
- 27:35Speaker 3: when people leave him off the list for whatever reason.
- 27:38Speaker 3: I understand that, you know, they didn't see him play,
- 27:40Speaker 3: but you look at some of those old footage, that
- 27:43Speaker 3: old footage of Wilt when he was standing and he
- 27:45Speaker 3: was pushing it up the court and handling and shooting
- 27:47Speaker 3: jumpers and shooting fadeaways. And, you know, if they had
- 27:50Speaker 3: kept block shots, you'd probably average seven or eight blocks
- 27:53Speaker 3: a game.
- 27:53Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 27:55Speaker 3: They changed the rules.
- 27:55Speaker 4: You know, free throws.
- 27:58Speaker 3: You used to be able to not have to wait
- 28:01Speaker 3: till the ball hit the rim to cross the free
- 28:02Speaker 3: throw line.
- 28:02Speaker 1: Okay.
- 28:03Speaker 3: So he would just toss it off the backboard.
- 28:04Speaker 1: And go get it.
- 28:05Speaker 3: And jump and then dunk it.
- 28:07Speaker 1: That's why it's free throw.
- 28:08Speaker 2: We're still shooting 50%.
- 28:11Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 28:12Speaker 3: So then they changed rules where you had to wait
- 28:15Speaker 3: till the ball hit the rim.
- 28:17Speaker 1: They changed everything.
- 28:18Speaker 3: Yeah, you could do that.
- 28:19Speaker 1: See, we didn't know that. We had to meet the real.
- 28:22Speaker 4: So he's a real person.
- 28:23Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 28:23Speaker 1: He was really on that off the court. He was
- 28:27Speaker 1: a great businessman.
- 28:29Speaker 3: Hell of an OG. Out of 10,000 women, you do
- 28:34Speaker 3: the math. I mean, that's crazy to think about that.
- 28:38Speaker 1: It is as well.
- 28:39Speaker 3: But we'll have the mansion on Mulholland Drive. Overlooking the
- 28:44Speaker 3: 405 between L.A. and the Valley. Top of the hill
- 28:47Speaker 3: with just this freaked out mansion. One room was just
- 28:50Speaker 3: all water, purple water bed.
- 28:51Speaker 4: That's it.
- 28:54Speaker 3: I swear to God.
- 28:56Speaker 1: It was amazing.
- 28:57Speaker 3: It was all some different stuff, man. You ever get
- 29:01Speaker 3: a chance, scroll that up, Google, Google Will's Mansion in L.A.
- 29:05Speaker 1: Will's Mansion? Let's see what was what. I'm going for
- 29:07Speaker 1: the 10,000. You're not going to go to the 100-point game?
- 29:10Speaker 1: I got to see the video. I got him playing. Nah, nah.
- 29:13Speaker 1: I need to see the video.
- 29:14Speaker 3: I ain't going to lie about nothing.
- 29:17Speaker 4: You know, that was just one of them off.
- 29:19Speaker 3: They usually play at Philly, but they play in the
- 29:21Speaker 3: Knicks or somebody, I believe, that night. Sixers play in
- 29:23Speaker 3: the Knicks. And then my business advisor, mentor, Willie Knowles,
- 29:29Speaker 3: played for the Knicks. He had about 30-something that game himself,
- 29:31Speaker 3: but But, you know, he told me about.
- 29:33Speaker 4: That game and it happened.
- 29:34Speaker 3: It was a real thing.
- 29:35Speaker 1: Oh, so he knows somebody who's in the game. You
- 29:37Speaker 1: know what? I'm a solid OG.
- 29:39Speaker 3: Yeah, bro.
- 29:39Speaker 1: That's real crazy. Oh, his crib was crazy.
- 29:42Speaker 3: That's at the top of the hill.
- 29:43Speaker 4: That's Wilt, man. That's how Wilt was doing.
- 29:46Speaker 3: That's back in, like, the late 60s, early 70s, man.
- 29:49Speaker 6: Oh, yeah.
- 29:50Speaker 1: He said, well, the purple waterbed. Yeah, Wilt was going crazy.
- 29:53Speaker 1: That's how Wilt was doing.
- 29:54Speaker 3: I ain't gonna lie.
- 29:55Speaker 2: We have to get one champion jersey on this set immediately.
- 29:57Speaker 1: We honor and respect it. For sure. The 13 has
- 30:00Speaker 1: to go up for sure, man. So happy I met you, man.
- 30:02Speaker 1: Never going to meet nobody who can confirm anything about Will.
- 30:06Speaker 4: Yeah, no, Will was real, man.
- 30:07Speaker 3: Will was, and he slowed down. He said he was
- 30:10Speaker 3: going to lead the league in assists one year. He
- 30:11Speaker 3: led the league in assists.
- 30:12Speaker 1: Oh, yeah, yeah, here you go.
- 30:14Speaker 4: He was just one of them dudes, you know.
- 30:15Speaker 2: Wow.
- 30:15Speaker 3: Played with the Wildcats for a year, so he had
- 30:17Speaker 3: all the tricks and all the handles and.
- 30:18Speaker 1: All that stuff.
- 30:19Speaker 5: Yeah.
- 30:20Speaker 4: He was an interesting character.
- 30:22Speaker 2: We will keep watching him live, for sure. We will
- 30:24Speaker 2: not let that go up. But obviously, man, you know,
- 30:26Speaker 2: Bucks legend for sure. But I wanted to ask, what
- 30:27Speaker 2: was it like going to UCLA after?
- 30:29Speaker 1: Uh-oh. One of the best dynasties in sports history.
- 30:33Speaker 4: Is it after?
- 30:34Speaker 3: Well, I was at the tail end. We won the
- 30:36Speaker 3: 10th championship for Coach Wooden in 12 years. And so,
- 30:42Speaker 3: you know, and when I got there, they had won
- 30:44Speaker 3: seven in a row.
- 30:45Speaker 1: Yes.
- 30:46Speaker 3: Bill Walton, Jamal Wilkes, Keith Wilkes at that time, they
- 30:50Speaker 3: were just coming off of two seasons where they were 30-0, 30-0.
- 30:52Speaker 4: They hadn't lost in two years.
- 30:54Speaker 1: That's crazy.
- 30:55Speaker 3: That's crazy.
- 30:56Speaker 4: I went in there as a freshman. Coach Wood had
- 30:58Speaker 4: a great recruiting deal.
- 30:59Speaker 3: He called me from the locker room when he won
- 31:01Speaker 3: a championship my senior year in high school against Memphis
- 31:05Speaker 3: State down in St.
- 31:05Speaker 1: Louis.
- 31:06Speaker 3: And, you know, I was in the den watching the
- 31:08Speaker 3: game with my father and And I wanted to go
- 31:10Speaker 3: outside and start shooting around.
- 31:11Speaker 4: I'm all hyped.
- 31:12Speaker 3: I just watched UCLA win. Bill Walton was 21 for 22,
- 31:15Speaker 3: 44 points.
- 31:16Speaker 1: Blah, blah, blah.
- 31:17Speaker 3: And so my father's like, well, just wait a second.
- 31:18Speaker 4: Wait a second. So phone rings.
- 31:20Speaker 3: Like, hello?
- 31:21Speaker 4: Yeah, hold on. It's for you.
- 31:22Speaker 3: I was like, OK. I pick up the phone. It's
- 31:24Speaker 3: Coach Whitten. Marcus, this is Coach Whitten. Did you watch
- 31:27Speaker 3: the game, Marcus?
- 31:28Speaker 4: I was like, yes, Coach. We'd like for you to
- 31:30Speaker 4: be a part of this next year, Marcus. You think
- 31:31Speaker 4: you want to be a part of this?
- 31:32Speaker 3: I was like, hell yeah. Yes, Coach, yes, yes. And
- 31:39Speaker 3: so that sealed the deal as far as being recruited.
- 31:41Speaker 3: Harkaning at Long Beach State. I was really hot for
- 31:44Speaker 3: Long Beach State, but then he took the job at
- 31:45Speaker 3: UNLV on Vegas.
- 31:47Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 31:47Speaker 3: Well, at that time, Vegas was just a barren wasteland
- 31:50Speaker 3: of a desert. It wasn't like it is now. And
- 31:53Speaker 3: so there was no thought of going out to Vegas. But,
- 31:56Speaker 3: you know, for me, UCLA was a great experience. Playing
- 32:01Speaker 3: for John Wooden, winning that 10th and final championship for
- 32:04Speaker 3: him my sophomore year was an accomplishment, a highlight that
- 32:09Speaker 3: will stay with me for the rest of my life. Now,
- 32:11Speaker 3: starting as a freshman, my first week of practice, Keith Wilkes,
- 32:15Speaker 3: Locked me up. I'm a 17-year-old freshman out of Crenshaw.
- 32:19Speaker 3: Wouldn't let me touch the ball, block my shots. If
- 32:21Speaker 3: I got by him, Bill Walther would pin him against
- 32:23Speaker 3: the backboard and talk shit like, yo, this is not
- 32:25Speaker 3: Crenshaw High School, buddy. This is the big time. This
- 32:27Speaker 3: is UCLA. Get that Crenshaw bullshit out of here. So
- 32:32Speaker 3: I called home crying. I was just like, to my mother, like, look,
- 32:35Speaker 3: I can't play here. These guys are too good. I
- 32:37Speaker 3: don't know why y'all wanted me to go here in
- 32:39Speaker 3: the first place. I should have went to UCSB, Santa Barbara,
- 32:41Speaker 3: like all my buddies did. And then my father got
- 32:44Speaker 3: on the phone.
- 32:45Speaker 4: He's like, what's going on? What's wrong with you?
- 32:46Speaker 3: I was like, you know, Keith Wilkes, I can't score
- 32:48Speaker 3: on him. Bill Walton's blocking all my shots. And my
- 32:50Speaker 3: father's like, Keith Wilkes and Bill Walton, they're the two
- 32:53Speaker 3: best defensive players in the team.
- 32:55Speaker 1: You're fired. You're fired. And I wound up.
- 32:56Speaker 3: Starting as a 17-year-old freshman, about seven, eight games that year,
- 33:00Speaker 3: averaged 12 and 7.
- 33:01Speaker 4: Looked at my numbers. 12 and 7, the games I started.
- 33:04Speaker 3: But there were some seniors, upperclassmen that were complaining that,
- 33:07Speaker 3: You know, I was hurting their pro prospect.
- 33:10Speaker 1: Oh, God.
- 33:10Speaker 4: So Coach Wooden called my father.
- 33:12Speaker 3: After I'd been playing pretty well as a 17-year-old freshman.
- 33:16Speaker 3: I turned 18 in February. And he's like, Jeff, this
- 33:18Speaker 3: is Coach Wooden. Like, Marcus has done an amazing job.
- 33:21Speaker 4: He's done really, really good. Exceeded our expectations. But I'm
- 33:24Speaker 4: going to go with my upperclassman for the tournament. It's
- 33:26Speaker 4: my father. It's only he could have told him, hey.
- 33:29Speaker 3: Well, Coach, no team.
- 33:30Speaker 4: But you're going to lose with your upperclassmen.
- 33:33Speaker 3: Hey, it's your team. Coach Wooden is talking to you.
- 33:38Speaker 3: It's your team.
- 33:38Speaker 4: You do what you want to do, but.
- 33:39Speaker 3: Hey, you're going to lose with your upperclassmen. You know
- 33:44Speaker 3: how we do it. I've had to do that a
- 33:48Speaker 3: couple of times. My son just interjects my own little
- 33:53Speaker 3: perspective on things. But it was a great experience. Next year,
- 33:58Speaker 3: Next year, so that summer I worked my ass off.
- 34:00Speaker 3: I had a lot of baby fat as a freshman.
- 34:03Speaker 3: Came in that next year as a sophomore, killing. I'd
- 34:05Speaker 3: worked hard, body was tight, you know, just jumping out
- 34:08Speaker 3: the gym. I ran into this little leprechaun looking white
- 34:12Speaker 3: boy in West LA who had these isometric exercises to
- 34:15Speaker 3: improve jumping, box jumps and all this other stuff. And
- 34:18Speaker 3: his thing was like, you do these three days a week,
- 34:20Speaker 3: you put five inches on your vert. Well, I'm an
- 34:22Speaker 3: obsessive you know, compulsive personality type of guy. I can't
- 34:26Speaker 3: do anything a little bit, no matter what it is.
- 34:28Speaker 3: And so I do it every day, you know, twice
- 34:30Speaker 3: a day sometimes. So I came back just jumping out
- 34:32Speaker 3: the gym. My jumper was finally falling. And I wound
- 34:35Speaker 3: up getting hepatitis two days before practice started. On a Friday,
- 34:40Speaker 3: practice started on a Monday and dropped about 20 pounds.
- 34:44Speaker 4: In about six or seven days.
- 34:47Speaker 3: Hospitalized. They wanted me to red shirt. And the doctors
- 34:50Speaker 3: were like, he's lost so much weight. I went from 217,
- 34:52Speaker 3: 218 to like 195. So they told my parents, like,
- 34:56Speaker 3: if he doesn't put his weight back on, he's going
- 34:57Speaker 3: to have to sit out. He's just too weak to
- 34:59Speaker 3: play this year. So my mother hearing that, they're from Louisiana.
- 35:01Speaker 3: So they were smuggling the hospital, like collard greens and smugglers. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 35:07Speaker 1: To be here.
- 35:08Speaker 3: Yeah, there it is.
- 35:09Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah.
- 35:10Speaker 1: Long to know so.
- 35:11Speaker 6: Here, eat, boy.
- 35:12Speaker 3: Here, eat, eat, eat.
- 35:13Speaker 4: I put the weight back on and played that year, but.
- 35:15Speaker 3: The thing about that, and it was gratifying because we
- 35:18Speaker 3: did win an NCAA championship. I had 35-12 in the
- 35:21Speaker 3: Western Regional Finals. Arizona State and Lionel Hollins and that crew.
- 35:26Speaker 3: So that was the highlight of that season for me.
- 35:28Speaker 3: But at the same time, I never felt that level
- 35:32Speaker 3: of conditioning that I had felt before I got sick.
- 35:34Speaker 3: I mean, I was in great shape and I always
- 35:36Speaker 3: felt a little bit more fatigued than I normally would have.
- 35:41Speaker 4: And so I was always looking for different stimulants to
- 35:45Speaker 4: kind of.
- 35:45Speaker 3: Help me kind of fill the void.
- 35:48Speaker 4: And yeah, so anyway, another story.
- 35:53Speaker 1: What a time. Yeah, what a time.
- 35:54Speaker 4: But on that point, And this stuff was legal.
- 35:57Speaker 3: They had these pills that were called pep pills was
- 36:03Speaker 3: the name for them.
- 36:04Speaker 4: But you could buy them at the grocery store.
- 36:06Speaker 3: And so, again, obsessive compulsive, these pep pills supposed to
- 36:11Speaker 3: give you some extra energy. This natural plant called guarana
- 36:14Speaker 3: gives you this natural energy. And so the recommendation was
- 36:18Speaker 3: to take two. So before our games in Milwaukee in
- 36:21Speaker 3: the early 80s, I'd take like eight pills.
- 36:25Speaker 4: Six, you know, I got shit.
- 36:28Speaker 3: So I go out there just like, you know, and
- 36:30Speaker 3: so one day.
- 36:31Speaker 1: One day, one day, one day, I sprained my ankle.
- 36:33Speaker 3: And so I had to go to the locker room
- 36:36Speaker 3: to get re-taped. And so Jeff Snedeker, our trainer, who
- 36:45Speaker 3: used to tell me all the time I was the
- 36:46Speaker 3: best conditioned athlete he'd ever been around since Pelé, the
- 36:48Speaker 3: soccer player. He coached the trainer for the Cosmos in
- 36:51Speaker 3: New York. But so Jeff Snedeker had to re-tape me.
- 36:54Speaker 3: So he cut the tape off my ankle, and my
- 36:56Speaker 3: foot just kept twitching. It wouldn't stop twitching. So he
- 37:00Speaker 3: was like, what are you on? I was like, these Garana,
- 37:06Speaker 3: these pep pills. So he contacted the FDA, the Food
- 37:10Speaker 3: and Drug Administration, just to see what was in them.
- 37:12Speaker 3: He came back and told me a couple of days
- 37:14Speaker 3: later that it was just pure caffeine. Like one pill
- 37:18Speaker 3: was like drinking 10 cups of coffee. I'm thinking like six, eight.
- 37:21Speaker 1: It's the one in my heart.
- 37:22Speaker 3: You know, but I was a chemist. I found it.
- 37:25Speaker 6: That's what we don't get credit for. I'm telling you, man.
- 37:44Speaker 3: Come on. You know, Doc didn't do nothing. Larry Bird
- 37:48Speaker 3: drank a little bit, but to go out there and
- 37:49Speaker 3: have to serve them based on, you know, being up
- 37:51Speaker 3: two or three days. I mean, come on, man.
- 37:53Speaker 4: That deserves something.
- 37:54Speaker 1: I was really doing all that in these locker rooms. Well, whatever.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I'm just saying at halftime, was y'all smoking cigarettes?
- 37:59Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
- 38:01Speaker 4: Now, I never smoked at halftime, but bobbling near my
- 38:03Speaker 4: teammates Yeah.
- 38:05Speaker 3: That little ashtray in his locker room.
- 38:07Speaker 1: That is crazy. Oh, man.
- 38:10Speaker 3: That is cigarettes.
- 38:12Speaker 4: He come in at halftime, talking over chat.
- 38:14Speaker 5: And now my man comes down off the screen. I
- 38:17Speaker 5: need y'all to switch over here and blah, blah, blah.
- 38:20Speaker 5: But yeah, I didn't smoke cigarettes until I got to
- 38:22Speaker 5: the league. I mean, cigarettes were like a no, no,
- 38:25Speaker 5: I can't do that.
- 38:25Speaker 4: It's taboo.
- 38:26Speaker 3: And then I got to the NBA and every, you know,
- 38:28Speaker 3: as a rookie, all these guys were smoking.
- 38:30Speaker 4: And I was like, man, that doesn't, Just affect your win.
- 38:32Speaker 3: Yeah, you rub it down a few times to get
- 38:34Speaker 3: it out of you, but it kind of helps cut
- 38:36Speaker 3: the tension, blah, blah, blah. And there's a funny story
- 38:39Speaker 3: that our assistant coach, John Killalay, used to tell about
- 38:43Speaker 3: the Boston Celtics before one big playoff series. I think
- 38:46Speaker 3: the Bullets, they all, like, I think everybody smoked except
- 38:49Speaker 3: John Hamilton, Jake.
- 38:50Speaker 4: And so they all swore off cigarettes.
- 38:51Speaker 3: No, we're not going to smoke in this playoff series.
- 38:53Speaker 3: We're going to go in here and just be in
- 38:54Speaker 3: great shape. Nobody's going to smoke. They got down 0-2.
- 38:56Speaker 3: They're like, F that. They're like, F that. They're like,
- 38:59Speaker 3: F that.
- 38:59Speaker 1: They're like, F that. They're like, F that.
- 39:00Speaker 3: They're like, F that.
- 39:01Speaker 1: They're like, F that. They're like, F that. They're like,
- 39:03Speaker 1: F that. They're like, F that.
- 39:05Speaker 3: They're like, F that.
- 39:18Speaker 1: It's just good hearing it from him, bro. He was
- 39:20Speaker 1: a dog. Yeah, he coached.
- 39:23Speaker 3: But that was just kind of the way things were, like,
- 39:26Speaker 3: you know, all the breweries in Milwaukee. So we just
- 39:28Speaker 3: had all kind of just beers. short dogs, millers, whatever.
- 39:31Speaker 4: But it's funny.
- 39:33Speaker 3: Troy Flanagan, Dr.
- 39:34Speaker 4: Flanagan was there when you were there.
- 39:35Speaker 3: But Dr. Troy was there. And so we were just
- 39:38Speaker 3: kind of having a casual conversation.
- 39:41Speaker 4: He's from New Zealand, Australia. So Marcus said, what did
- 39:43Speaker 4: you guys do for recovery after games when you played?
- 39:46Speaker 4: I said, well, Dr.
- 39:46Speaker 3: Troy, we sat in the sauna, big drink. 10, 12
- 39:49Speaker 3: little short dogs of beer, smoke a pack of cigarettes,
- 39:53Speaker 3: maybe do eight balls. He's like, I don't know. He's like, stop.
- 39:58Speaker 3: I don't want to hear anymore. I don't want to
- 40:01Speaker 3: hear anymore. I'm just telling you to start recovering. I'll
- 40:07Speaker 3: put some extras on some of it. But the beer
- 40:10Speaker 3: and a lot of.
- 40:12Speaker 4: The stuff, you know, that's just kind of what it
- 40:14Speaker 4: was like. There was no, none of that.
- 40:18Speaker 3: medically correct kind of way of approaching recovery. It was
- 40:21Speaker 3: just like, hey, drink your beer, get the fluids in
- 40:24Speaker 3: you while you're sitting in the sauna.
- 40:25Speaker 4: The worst thing you can do.
- 40:26Speaker 1: After you've played, you know, after you've sweated.
- 40:28Speaker 3: And I would lose easily six, seven pounds during the
- 40:34Speaker 3: course of a game just to sweat.
- 40:36Speaker 4: I sweated a lot as a player, yeah.
- 40:38Speaker 3: I remember I was with the Clippers and we had
- 40:41Speaker 3: a surprise weigh-in before we played Portland and Don Chaney
- 40:43Speaker 3: was the coach. So he weighed me and I was like,
- 40:46Speaker 3: and I've been drinking orange juice all day. I get
- 40:48Speaker 3: a pitcher of orange juice on game day and just hydrate.
- 40:50Speaker 3: Just drink a pitcher of orange juice in the course
- 40:52Speaker 3: of the day, not at once. And so I've been
- 40:54Speaker 3: hydrating all day. So they put me on the scale,
- 40:56Speaker 3: surprised me. I think I weighed 230. I played about 224, 225.
- 41:00Speaker 3: So Don Chaney's like, Marcus, you're fat. You're fat. See,
- 41:03Speaker 3: I knew it.
- 41:03Speaker 1: You're fat. You're fat.
- 41:04Speaker 3: I said, Don, Don, it's water weight. That ain't no
- 41:06Speaker 3: damn water.
- 41:07Speaker 1: Weight, blah, blah, blah.
- 41:08Speaker 4: Went out and played the game. I said, put me
- 41:09Speaker 4: on the scale after we played.
- 41:10Speaker 3: We played.
- 41:11Speaker 4: Put me on the scale. I was like 217, 218, 219.
- 41:14Speaker 4: Lost about 10, 11 pounds.
- 41:15Speaker 3: Of that water weight.
- 41:15Speaker 1: Damn.
- 41:16Speaker 4: Yeah. So that's just kind of how we did it
- 41:19Speaker 4: back in the day.
- 41:20Speaker 1: Damn.
- 41:21Speaker 2: You think if y'all had all this stuff, like all
- 41:23Speaker 2: the stuff that we got now, like all the technology,
- 41:26Speaker 2: all the medical stuff, how much more better player would
- 41:29Speaker 2: you have been? Like Hoopin' and Chuck Taylors and stuff.
- 41:33Speaker 2: What about you, Hasselman? Some real shoes.
- 41:35Speaker 4: And a good clean body.
- 41:43Speaker 3: That might be a little bit too much. But the shoes, no.
- 41:48Speaker 3: But I was one of the first.
- 41:49Speaker 4: I was part of that top 10.
- 41:51Speaker 3: The top 10, remember those?
- 41:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 41:52Speaker 3: So I was in the top 10. You know, there's me,
- 41:55Speaker 3: Rick Barry, Billy Knight. I forgot the other guys that
- 41:58Speaker 3: were in the top 10. And those were the first
- 41:59Speaker 3: shoes that came out really padded on the side, cushions
- 42:04Speaker 3: on the bottoms, blah, blah, blah. They were too heavy.
- 42:07Speaker 3: I went back to the pro models right away. I
- 42:08Speaker 3: was like, I can't wear this shit, man. I can't
- 42:10Speaker 3: jump in these. I can't move in these.
- 42:11Speaker 4: I went back to the little thin sole pro models.
- 42:14Speaker 3: And, you know, Adidas.
- 42:16Speaker 4: So Chuck Taylor's Converse in high school were the shoe.
- 42:21Speaker 3: But then once we got the pro models at UCLA,
- 42:24Speaker 3: I just, I mean, that was the sweetest shoe that
- 42:26Speaker 3: I'd ever had on my feet. And so, but, you know,
- 42:28Speaker 3: to your point, Jeff, I mean, I think the thing
- 42:32Speaker 3: I may have benefited from most, and we're talking and
- 42:36Speaker 3: laughing about all those substance issues and all that, which
- 42:39Speaker 3: I went through, but we didn't have the psychological support
- 42:45Speaker 3: that the guys today. I think that would have been
- 42:47Speaker 3: as much of a benefit. As all the other training,
- 42:50Speaker 3: just somebody to talk things through. You listen to Giannis
- 42:53Speaker 3: talk and you can hear when he's talking about there's
- 42:55Speaker 3: no such thing as failure in the industry. Yeah, yeah.
- 42:58Speaker 4: Trying to, you know, make sure you get better and
- 43:00Speaker 4: this is what it is, you know.
- 43:01Speaker 3: And so just having that kind of a mindset, I think,
- 43:05Speaker 3: alleviates a lot of the self-induced pressure.
- 43:08Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 43:09Speaker 3: You know, and that's what we're putting on ourselves, especially me,
- 43:11Speaker 3: you know, like I'm like I say, obsessive, compulsive personality, introspective. And,
- 43:16Speaker 3: you know, if I went 12 or 15 for a game,
- 43:19Speaker 3: it was like the three shots I missed, I'd obsess over, like,
- 43:22Speaker 3: God damn, I mean, I could have been, you know.
- 43:24Speaker 3: And so the psychological support. And there's a guy by
- 43:29Speaker 3: the name of Kwaku Rommel-Smith, who was a Bucs psychiatrist, psychologist,
- 43:34Speaker 3: when I first got there before Craig Manning took over.
- 43:37Speaker 3: And he talks about that, just giving these guys an
- 43:39Speaker 3: outlet So that's some of that, that pressure that they're going, because,
- 43:42Speaker 3: you know, you know, it's pressure. It's pressure performing on
- 43:44Speaker 3: that level, especially, you know, whether you're a role player
- 43:47Speaker 3: or a star, but especially if you were like a
- 43:49Speaker 3: star player.
- 43:50Speaker 4: And I was first team all pro.
- 43:52Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 43:52Speaker 4: Second year in the league, 22 years old.
- 43:54Speaker 1: That's great.
- 43:55Speaker 4: It's a game.
- 43:57Speaker 3: And now, you know, just trying to sustain that. And
- 43:59Speaker 3: then they have Don Nelson, my coach, who I love,
- 44:01Speaker 3: but came to me before my third year. And he's like, Em,
- 44:03Speaker 3: what do you think you can average going into your
- 44:05Speaker 3: third year? It's like, Me, George Girvin, and Will B. Free,
- 44:08Speaker 3: we got to bet who's going to lead the league
- 44:09Speaker 3: in scoring. I'm going to average 30. He's like, there's
- 44:12Speaker 3: no doubt you could, but give me 20 a game
- 44:15Speaker 3: and seven rebounds, play solid defense, and spread the shots around. Now,
- 44:20Speaker 3: the thing about that is that I averaged 26, shooting 55%
- 44:23Speaker 3: from the field. I was number one in the league
- 44:24Speaker 3: in offensive box plus minus. I was the most efficient
- 44:27Speaker 3: scorer in the league. It was almost like you should
- 44:29Speaker 3: shoot more.
- 44:29Speaker 4: Today, it'd be like, hey, you've got to get him.
- 44:31Speaker 3: He's got a heliocentric. Be like Luka.
- 44:33Speaker 4: Be like Giannis.
- 44:35Speaker 3: But at that time, they didn't have those kinds of analytics.
- 44:37Speaker 3: So never made first team All-Pro again. I think I
- 44:40Speaker 3: was second team a couple of years. Larry Bird actually
- 44:44Speaker 3: supplanted me on the first team when he was a rookie.
- 44:47Speaker 3: My third year, when the voting went from the players
- 44:50Speaker 3: to the media. So, you know, it's just.
- 44:54Speaker 1: So we're trying to say you were really first team?
- 44:56Speaker 3: Well, no, I will say that if I was allowed to.
- 45:03Speaker 3: Express myself offensively like i trained myself to yeah i
- 45:06Speaker 3: mean i was just a fundamentally sound you know mid-range
- 45:08Speaker 3: jumper get to the basket finished incredibly efficient um you
- 45:12Speaker 3: know if i would average 27 28 i would have
- 45:13Speaker 3: definitely been.
- 45:15Speaker 4: First team all pro you know for a number.
- 45:17Speaker 2: Of years shooting 55 percent yeah i don't think people
- 45:19Speaker 2: realize how efficient that is yeah like to see people
- 45:22Speaker 2: do that now they're like see kevin durant or see
- 45:24Speaker 2: like shea sga shooting 50 from the field Average of
- 45:28Speaker 2: numbers is kind of crazy.
- 45:29Speaker 3: Yeah. And even like a Chris Middleton that we had,
- 45:32Speaker 3: I mean, that mid-range shot is looked down upon.
- 45:37Speaker 4: But smart coaches and smart organizations.
- 45:39Speaker 3: If they got a guy like a KD and we
- 45:41Speaker 3: had Chris and you can shoot it and knock it
- 45:44Speaker 3: down at that kind of a elite level clip, then...
- 45:47Speaker 3: It's all good.
- 45:48Speaker 1: I feel like the best scorers got the mid-range game.
- 45:49Speaker 4: Yeah, you got to. And that's because in the playoffs,
- 45:52Speaker 4: they're cutting off the threes. They're cutting off the basket.
- 45:55Speaker 3: They're giving up. That's what they're giving up is mid-range jumpers.
- 45:57Speaker 3: And you've got guys that can knock those down, like
- 45:59Speaker 3: KD and some of these other players. DeMar DeRozan was
- 46:01Speaker 3: a mid-range master.
- 46:03Speaker 4: Still is.
- 46:04Speaker 1: Life off of that.
- 46:04Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. And he gave us 50 one game, I think.
- 46:09Speaker 3: when he was with Toronto, just mid-rangers, you know, and
- 46:11Speaker 3: nothing you can do about it.
- 46:12Speaker 1: So, yeah.
- 46:12Speaker 2: That's interesting y'all say that because look at JB, the
- 46:14Speaker 2: two past finals MVPs.
- 46:16Speaker 3: Yeah, right.
- 46:17Speaker 2: JB, SGA, for sure. Uh, everybody's not dead at all.
- 46:20Speaker 2: I want to ask you, obviously, you know what I'm saying,
- 46:21Speaker 2: did your thing, UCLA, got drafted, did your stuff. You've
- 46:24Speaker 2: got that first payday.
- 46:26Speaker 1: What'd you do? Nothing responsible, not the career, take care
- 46:28Speaker 1: of the family. What was that first? All right, I
- 46:29Speaker 1: made it. I'm in the league. I got that first
- 46:30Speaker 1: big boy check. What'd you spend it on? Well, it was.
- 46:32Speaker 3: The big boy checks back in those days, weren't it? Like,
- 46:35Speaker 3: like the big boy checks they are today. I bought a, uh,
- 46:39Speaker 3: I bought a Mercedes. I don't know why, but this
- 46:43Speaker 3: guy at Beverly Hills Mercedes, wife salesman, talked me into
- 46:47Speaker 3: buying like a 300 turbo diesel. And then the turbo
- 46:52Speaker 3: was going to make it go as fast as a
- 46:54Speaker 3: regular Mercedes. All the other guys, 450 SELs, all the
- 46:58Speaker 3: other guys that I've come through with. But I wanted
- 47:00Speaker 3: to be different. So I bought my little 300 turbo diesel.
- 47:03Speaker 3: But that was that, you know, I've made it to
- 47:07Speaker 3: the big time moment. But I mean, back in those days,
- 47:10Speaker 3: I mean, the way contracts were structured, they were escalating.
- 47:14Speaker 4: So my first year, I may have.
- 47:15Speaker 3: Made $ 100, 000, then maybe $ 105, 000.
- 47:18Speaker 4: Or something, $ 110, 000, $ 150, 000 the second year.
- 47:20Speaker 3: That's why I held out. That's why Will Chamberlain started
- 47:23Speaker 3: talking to me and asking for more money.
- 47:25Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 47:25Speaker 3: Because what happened, I was making about $ 125, 000, $ 150, 000, something
- 47:28Speaker 3: like that. Ted Stepien became owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers.
- 47:32Speaker 3: He started paying these guys who couldn't hold my jockstrap. $ 400, 000, $ 600, 000.
- 47:36Speaker 3: I'm making like.
- 47:38Speaker 4: $ 150, 000. Y'all tripping.
- 47:40Speaker 1: Wait a minute.
- 47:41Speaker 4: I'm first team all pro. I'm making $ 130, 000 and these
- 47:44Speaker 4: guys are making $ 450, 000.
- 47:45Speaker 3: So that led to a lot of acrimony between myself
- 47:49Speaker 3: and the Bucks. I held out two or three times
- 47:52Speaker 3: and I got my money. But it took its mental
- 47:56Speaker 3: and emotional toll because you go through hell. They paint
- 47:59Speaker 3: you as a villain.
- 48:00Speaker 4: In the media and you're this and that and So.
- 48:03Speaker 3: Anyway, I mean, I remember when I held out one
- 48:04Speaker 3: time and I was in L.A. and this local, this
- 48:07Speaker 3: local was having some relationship issues with my wife. And
- 48:10Speaker 3: so this one sports journalist, Rod Luck, local Milwaukee TV station,
- 48:16Speaker 3: he was on the phone when it came to him.
- 48:18Speaker 4: It's like, OK, OK. Hey, ladies and gentlemen, I just
- 48:20Speaker 4: got it right here. Marcus Johnson's getting divorced. Yeah. That's
- 48:25Speaker 4: why he's having some personal issues. He's getting divorced. His
- 48:27Speaker 4: life is falling apart.
- 48:28Speaker 1: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. Dang.
- 48:30Speaker 4: Yeah, so all that kind of stuff was jumping off.
- 48:32Speaker 4: So it was a different era.
- 48:33Speaker 2: Dang, that's a different time for sure. Yeah, we met
- 48:37Speaker 2: a Pablo Torre for the Christmas. He ain't getting too
- 48:39Speaker 2: close to home.
- 48:40Speaker 1: That shit's been happening then.
- 48:42Speaker 3: Yeah, what's that? The media? Yeah.
- 48:45Speaker 1: It's been on BS.
- 48:45Speaker 3: Well, back in those days, the really good reporters, quote unquote,
- 48:50Speaker 3: would come by your house at 2 in the morning.
- 48:52Speaker 1: And go through your garbage. Man, what?
- 48:54Speaker 4: You have to be careful. You have to be careful.
- 48:57Speaker 1: See, DJ ain't locked in.
- 49:00Speaker 2: You see where I'm at.
- 49:02Speaker 3: They find whatever they find. That's where a lot of
- 49:05Speaker 3: the information that they're looking for to harm you can
- 49:10Speaker 3: be found.
- 49:10Speaker 1: They're trying to find them little pet bottles.
- 49:13Speaker 3: Pet bottles.
- 49:13Speaker 1: Little wrappers and all that. Man, that's crazy. Yeah. was crazy.
- 49:21Speaker 3: This brother got 20 pep bottles. What the hell? What
- 49:25Speaker 3: the hell's going on with him?
- 49:27Speaker 1: That is wild.
- 49:28Speaker 2: We always talk about NIL, especially with Tegan Wake.
- 49:31Speaker 1: For you, obviously, what you did at UCLA.
- 49:33Speaker 2: I know that would have been crazy if he was
- 49:34Speaker 2: able to get that NIL back in them days, boy,
- 49:36Speaker 2: because y'all was unstoppable.
- 49:38Speaker 3: Well, I had breakfast with a good friend of mine,
- 49:41Speaker 3: former teammate with the Bucs, who was a longtime coach
- 49:43Speaker 3: in NCAA, Lorenzo Romar.
- 49:45Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Washington Hill.
- 49:47Speaker 4: St.
- 49:47Speaker 3: Louis, a lot of schools, Pepperdine. So he's at Loyola
- 49:51Speaker 3: right now as an assistant. And, you know, I was probably,
- 49:54Speaker 3: I wouldn't even say mid-major, maybe a little bit lower
- 49:56Speaker 3: than a mid-major, if that's not too disparaging.
- 50:00Speaker 4: But we were having breakfast, and so.
- 50:01Speaker 3: I was like, man, well, you know, give me the
- 50:04Speaker 3: range of what you guys pay a good player. So
- 50:06Speaker 3: he's like, you know, get around a mil for a year.
- 50:10Speaker 1: Loyola?
- 50:10Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. I mean, that was kind of the range
- 50:13Speaker 3: that he talked about. But then he turned it on me.
- 50:15Speaker 3: He's like, man, look, MJ, if you were playing right now,
- 50:18Speaker 3: going into your senior year, seven, eight, the Bonster kind
- 50:23Speaker 3: of money, you know, which... I'm not.
- 50:25Speaker 4: Mad at it. Somebody should be making the money. It
- 50:29Speaker 4: should be the players.
- 50:30Speaker 3: If they want to say you got to stay for
- 50:34Speaker 3: two years minimum, a mic could roll with that.
- 50:37Speaker 1: You think they should put a cap on it, though?
- 50:39Speaker 4: In terms of the money?
- 50:40Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 50:42Speaker 5: I don't know.
- 50:42Speaker 3: To me, we talk about capitalism in this country until
- 50:46Speaker 3: it comes time to pay athletes.
- 50:48Speaker 1: Athletes, yeah.
- 50:49Speaker 3: Basketball players. Pennis players, they get what they can. Other
- 50:52Speaker 3: sports get what they can. These individual sports, But they
- 50:56Speaker 3: start talking about the amateurism and how it's ruining the
- 50:58Speaker 3: sport and blah, blah, blah.
- 50:59Speaker 4: But it's been going on forever. It's nothing new.
- 51:03Speaker 3: But it's just the amount of money. And like we know,
- 51:05Speaker 3: I mean, everybody's not going to get that. But at
- 51:07Speaker 3: the same time, this is the nature of the beast
- 51:09Speaker 3: right now. And the only thing I would say is
- 51:12Speaker 3: maybe you can... ask a guy to stick around. If
- 51:15Speaker 3: you're going to pay him that much money, you know, for,
- 51:17Speaker 3: for a couple of years, you have a chance to
- 51:19Speaker 3: get a little continuity with your team. So there's a
- 51:21Speaker 3: guy that's been able to move the portal from one
- 51:23Speaker 3: school to the next three schools in three years, whatever,
- 51:25Speaker 3: you know, I'm not crazy about that, but I mean,
- 51:28Speaker 3: the money's crazy.
- 51:29Speaker 4: The money's sick. I mean, trust me, it did.
- 51:30Speaker 3: When I found out that, like, we were talking, me
- 51:32Speaker 3: and my son Chris, we were talking about somebody getting
- 51:34Speaker 3: $ 5 million. I was like, so that's, what, three or
- 51:36Speaker 3: four years? No, Dad, that's per season.
- 51:38Speaker 1: Yes, sir.
- 51:38Speaker 4: Like, per season?
- 51:40Speaker 3: College?
- 51:40Speaker 1: Six months, baby.
- 51:41Speaker 2: You know a kid that just got, what, Florida got, what,
- 51:43Speaker 2: six million? Six million from Louisville, baby.
- 51:45Speaker 1: Yeah, so.
- 51:46Speaker 3: Six million from Louisville. But I, you know, just that.
- 51:50Speaker 3: It's kind of scary imagining me with 5 million.
- 51:53Speaker 4: At 18, 19.
- 51:53Speaker 2: 18, 19.
- 51:53Speaker 1: Me at 17.
- 51:53Speaker 3: MJ would have been so jealous. My car.
- 51:55Speaker 1: I don't own the strip club. Shout out to Lenny's, baby.
- 52:07Speaker 3: Is the Red Garner still here?
- 52:09Speaker 4: Nah.
- 52:10Speaker 3: Nah, they closed the Red Garner down.
- 52:12Speaker 1: Oh, the Red Garner. Oh, jeez.
- 52:14Speaker 3: The Red Garner.
- 52:15Speaker 1: The last time you was in it.
- 52:16Speaker 4: That was a spot. See, that was a spot back
- 52:19Speaker 4: in the 80s. That was a spot.
- 52:20Speaker 1: The Red Garner. What are you talking about?
- 52:22Speaker 3: Raquel Daniel.
- 52:23Speaker 1: She's the best.
- 52:26Speaker 3: She was on stage. She liked this fire. She'd do
- 52:30Speaker 3: a little thing on the fire. Oh, yeah, they liked it.
- 52:33Speaker 1: They liked it. They didn't like no fire.
- 52:36Speaker 4: I can't on that yet.
- 52:37Speaker 3: Bring it back.
- 52:38Speaker 2: Bring it back.
- 52:38Speaker 4: Maybe 70 years old.
- 52:39Speaker 1: We went to the recipe.
- 52:40Speaker 3: We went to the street. She may have a cane
- 52:45Speaker 3: or something. All my patients were hanging out tough in there.
- 52:48Speaker 3: That's crazy. That's when I fell in love with Raquel.
- 52:51Speaker 3: Booter in with her, my son.
- 53:01Speaker 1: You ain't got to live like this, man.
- 53:04Speaker 4: It's different. I love this.
- 53:05Speaker 2: Oh, man.
- 53:06Speaker 1: That's hilarious. Red Garter, buddy. That was a spot. That's crazy. Chicago,
- 53:08Speaker 1: the Red Garter.
- 53:17Speaker 3: There was no Magic City at that time in the 80s.
- 53:22Speaker 1: It was the Red Garden.
- 53:23Speaker 3: I always talk about that all the time.
- 53:25Speaker 1: I don't even know what y'all missing.
- 53:27Speaker 4: That was a good hangout.
- 53:29Speaker 1: We got to bring it back. What did you say
- 53:32Speaker 1: her name was again? Raquel. I see my uncle, I'm
- 53:34Speaker 1: going to ask him. The Red Gardener, baby. Oh, man,
- 53:37Speaker 1: that is insane, man. Wow. R.B. Hinn.
- 53:46Speaker 2: He don't watch too many movies, but you were part
- 53:48Speaker 2: of one of his favorite movies for sure. How did
- 53:51Speaker 2: that come about, man, being in a cult classic?
- 53:53Speaker 3: Oh, man, that was a great experience. Ironically, we were
- 54:01Speaker 3: doing a film for this guy in the hills of Pasadena,
- 54:05Speaker 3: just a real kind of guerrilla shoot. It wasn't no trailers.
- 54:09Speaker 3: It was a student film. He didn't have a whole
- 54:12Speaker 3: lot of money. He spent it all on camera crew
- 54:14Speaker 3: and and things like that. So a bunch of ballplayers
- 54:17Speaker 3: were just doing him a favor. And the film was
- 54:19Speaker 3: based on the life of Raymond Lewis. This guy I
- 54:21Speaker 3: was telling you guys about, the all-time greatest player out
- 54:24Speaker 3: of L.A., Lewis Price, who sang with The Temptations, was
- 54:26Speaker 3: starring as Raymond Lewis. He was also in The White
- 54:28Speaker 3: Man Can't Jump, the last scene with Freeman Williams. He
- 54:31Speaker 3: played Ducker King, or one of those two guys that
- 54:33Speaker 3: Woody and Wesley played against.
- 54:35Speaker 4: So we're shooting this film.
- 54:36Speaker 3: I met a guy, Silk Cozart, former ballplayer actor, He
- 54:41Speaker 3: knew the writer, director of White Man Can't Jump, Ron Shelton.
- 54:45Speaker 3: So he told me like, look, he's looking for a
- 54:46Speaker 3: guy to play this playground thug. I think he'd be
- 54:49Speaker 3: perfect for the part. I'm going to see if you
- 54:51Speaker 3: can come in to audition. So he got me the audition.
- 54:54Speaker 3: I got the lines we're going to go over, me
- 54:56Speaker 3: and Wesley Snipes. And I saw that in the scene,
- 54:59Speaker 3: there was a part in there where my character, Raymond Dickens,
- 55:03Speaker 3: pulls out a knife.
- 55:05Speaker 4: So I was like, my father's a barber, master barber.
- 55:08Speaker 4: Barber box keeps all his tools.
- 55:11Speaker 3: Let me work on this, like, razor technique that I
- 55:14Speaker 3: saw in this movie, J.D. 's Revenge, where this guy
- 55:16Speaker 3: pulled out a razor, one hand, opened it up. So
- 55:18Speaker 3: I worked on that for a few days, got that down.
- 55:21Speaker 3: Went in, did the audition, Wesley Snipes, went into my
- 55:23Speaker 3: playground mode, blah, blah, blah. Came time to pull out
- 55:25Speaker 3: the blade. I reached in my pocket, pulled out this
- 55:27Speaker 3: real razor, one hand, opened it up, started chasing Wesley
- 55:30Speaker 3: Snipes around the audition room.
- 55:33Speaker 4: Motherfucker, I'll kill you.
- 55:35Speaker 3: And so the scene went great, but the director was like, okay, cut, cut, cut, cut.
- 55:39Speaker 3: You got the part. But when we started shooting this,
- 55:41Speaker 3: leave that fucking razor in the heart. You're going to
- 55:44Speaker 3: kill somebody. We got props for that. But that's how
- 55:48Speaker 3: I got the part. But it was the greatest experience, man.
- 55:51Speaker 3: You know, Wesley was not a ball player.
- 55:53Speaker 4: He was an athlete.
- 55:54Speaker 1: He could stay.
- 55:54Speaker 3: He's like 5'8, 5'9. He could stand flat footed and
- 55:57Speaker 3: grab the rim with two hands easily. 10-foot rim. A
- 56:00Speaker 3: martial arts guy. Woody Harrelson was a gym rat. He
- 56:03Speaker 3: played ball all the time. First time we were playing
- 56:05Speaker 3: together out at the Hollywood Y.
- 56:08Speaker 4: Hollywood Y.
- 56:10Speaker 3: And so Woody's playing, and he calls a bad call.
- 56:12Speaker 3: And I'm like, he's called foul. I was like, man,
- 56:15Speaker 3: come on. That's not no foul, man. That's some bullshit, Woody.
- 56:17Speaker 3: He's like, you trying to impugn my integrity? You trying
- 56:20Speaker 3: to impugn my integrity?
- 56:21Speaker 2: Huh?
- 56:21Speaker 3: You trying to impugn my integrity? I said, look, man,
- 56:23Speaker 3: with the Crenshaw, I don't know what impugn means. But
- 56:25Speaker 3: it was a bullshit call. He started laughing. So we
- 56:28Speaker 3: kind of hit it off after that. But it was
- 56:30Speaker 3: a great experience, man.
- 56:31Speaker 1: That's hard.
- 56:32Speaker 3: And the character that I played, Raymond Dickens, was based
- 56:35Speaker 3: on a true story that I wrote a screenplay about,
- 56:37Speaker 3: as a matter of fact. Yes, sir. But this guy,
- 56:39Speaker 3: Reggie Harding, played for the Pistons, one of the first
- 56:43Speaker 3: high school to pro guys, but he was a heroin addict.
- 56:48Speaker 4: And so, but his life was just full of one calamity.
- 56:51Speaker 3: But in the research, I interviewed Dave Bing and Bob
- 56:53Speaker 3: Lanier and Freddie Lewis, who played with the Pacers, a
- 56:56Speaker 3: great Pacer. Yes, sir.
- 56:58Speaker 4: A whole bunch of guys. Oliver Darden.
- 57:02Speaker 3: I mean, these guys that played in the ABA back
- 57:05Speaker 3: in the day. And everybody told me, man, Rod Thorne
- 57:08Speaker 3: was a teammate of his who was with the Bucs
- 57:10Speaker 3: for a while, I think, when you were there, Jeff.
- 57:12Speaker 3: But they all tell me the same thing, that Reggie
- 57:14Speaker 3: Harding was a great guy, but he just had this
- 57:15Speaker 3: heroin addiction, this monkey on his back that would cause
- 57:18Speaker 3: him to do some irrational stuff. So he was pulling
- 57:20Speaker 3: pistols on people. There's one story when they were in
- 57:22Speaker 3: San Francisco. And back in those days, they'd play these
- 57:26Speaker 3: Midwest teams, East Coast teams, come out West, they'll play
- 57:28Speaker 3: like a three-game series. So they'd be in one city
- 57:30Speaker 3: for like a week. So Reggie Harding brought a couple
- 57:34Speaker 3: of chicks out there.
- 57:34Speaker 4: He was actually pimping.
- 57:35Speaker 3: He brought a couple of chicks from Detroit to the
- 57:38Speaker 3: Bay Area and San Francisco. And so something happened, something transpired.
- 57:43Speaker 3: Ray Scott told me this story. And they said, you're
- 57:45Speaker 3: going to need to come get your boy, Reggie.
- 57:47Speaker 4: He's going off. So they went to the room where
- 57:49Speaker 4: everybody was playing cards.
- 57:50Speaker 3: The girls were in there. Reggie had this one chick
- 57:53Speaker 3: dangling by her feet over the rail, like a 20-story
- 57:57Speaker 3: window or something, this hotel, just like over the banister.
- 58:01Speaker 3: So they finally got him to let her go. But
- 58:04Speaker 3: I found out later that he thought she was shortchanging
- 58:06Speaker 3: him on his money. But that's the kind of dude.
- 58:10Speaker 3: One game at halftime, he didn't play a lot in
- 58:12Speaker 3: the first half. So they come in at halftime, and
- 58:15Speaker 3: the coach is getting ready to talk about the adjustments
- 58:17Speaker 3: in the second half, and they hear a big thud.
- 58:19Speaker 3: And they look around, and Reggie's dropped this big. 45
- 58:21Speaker 3: pistol on the floor. So the coach is like, Reg,
- 58:24Speaker 3: what's going on? He's like, I don't know, buddy.
- 58:25Speaker 1: I don't play in the second half.
- 58:27Speaker 3: I don't know.
- 58:27Speaker 1: I better play it.
- 58:29Speaker 3: Play me three minutes in the second half, and you'll
- 58:32Speaker 3: find out what's going on.
- 58:33Speaker 2: Damn.
- 58:33Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 58:40Speaker 2: Man, you done seen some wild shit.
- 58:46Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, yeah. Bro, that's out of pocket. But anyway,
- 58:49Speaker 3: he wound up getting shot in the head, spent some
- 58:51Speaker 3: time in prison, and wound up getting shot in the
- 58:54Speaker 3: head at 30 years old. They think it was an
- 58:56Speaker 3: inside job, some drug dealer, some money. But that story
- 59:01Speaker 3: about him going into the liquor store in Detroit, mask on,
- 59:04Speaker 3: seven feet tall, you know, with a pistol. Give me
- 59:07Speaker 3: your money.
- 59:08Speaker 4: And the guy's like, come on.
- 59:08Speaker 3: Richie, man. on. It's the third time you got me.
- 59:14Speaker 3: Reggie supposedly said, this ain't me. This ain't me. So
- 59:20Speaker 3: that's where that story.
- 59:21Speaker 1: This ain't me. This ain't me.
- 59:22Speaker 3: This ain't me.
- 59:23Speaker 1: I'll be the Reg. Hey, you're simple talk.
- 59:27Speaker 4: Reggie Harden.
- 59:27Speaker 2: That fucking hero was tearing Reggie up, boy.
- 59:31Speaker 1: This ain't me. It's crazy. At seven foot. It's wild.
- 59:35Speaker 1: My car, I get my other gun. It's hilarious. Yeah.
- 59:37Speaker 3: No, we had a good time with that, man. And
- 59:41Speaker 3: it's funny.
- 59:42Speaker 6: I was.
- 59:43Speaker 3: I got a 17-year-old daughter. She'll be 17 on the
- 59:45Speaker 3: 25th of September, but Shiloh. So we were working out
- 59:48Speaker 3: at this park in Englewood, Rogers Park. So these young
- 59:52Speaker 3: hoopers were in there, two high school guys, 16, 17
- 59:54Speaker 3: years old. So their coach knew who I was. They
- 59:56Speaker 3: didn't know me. So he's like, guys, I want you
- 59:58Speaker 3: guys to meet this guy. This is Marcus Johnson, one
- 1:00:00Speaker 3: of the greatest players in L.A. history, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:00:02Speaker 4: And they kind of had this blank look on their face.
- 1:00:03Speaker 4: I'm like, coach, they have no idea. You guys never
- 1:00:05Speaker 4: heard of him? They're like, no, no. I said, you
- 1:00:07Speaker 4: guys seen White Man Can't Jump?
- 1:00:08Speaker 1: They're like, yeah.
- 1:00:09Speaker 4: I said, remember the liquor store scene?
- 1:00:11Speaker 3: The guy comes in. Oh, man, that was you. Oh, man.
- 1:00:15Speaker 3: So I told the coach, that's how I'm known now
- 1:00:17Speaker 3: more than anything I ever did as a basketball player,
- 1:00:19Speaker 3: especially with this generation. It's all good.
- 1:00:21Speaker 1: I don't mind.
- 1:00:22Speaker 4: It's all good. Better be known for something than basketball.
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: No, for sure. But you was really cold in the NBA. Yeah.
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: You really all-star, all that shit. Yeah.
- 1:00:30Speaker 2: And at the time period that you was hooping, too,
- 1:00:32Speaker 2: that was like the renaissance era of the league where
- 1:00:34Speaker 2: everybody was coming in. You had the stars coming in
- 1:00:35Speaker 2: and the league just expanded. You was still killing it.
- 1:00:38Speaker 4: I was going at them.
- 1:00:39Speaker 3: I was going at Bird, going at Doc.
- 1:00:40Speaker 4: I mean, you know.
- 1:00:43Speaker 3: As a matter of fact, they had a poll of
- 1:00:45Speaker 3: general managers around that time, early 80s, like who would
- 1:00:48Speaker 3: be the first player you would draft if you were
- 1:00:49Speaker 3: starting a franchise.
- 1:00:50Speaker 4: And I won that, like, a couple of years in
- 1:00:52Speaker 4: a row just from being an all-around player.
- 1:00:55Speaker 3: And that's why this Hall of Fame thing where I've
- 1:00:59Speaker 3: been a finalist five times in a row or five
- 1:01:02Speaker 3: times and have not been inducted those five times, making
- 1:01:06Speaker 3: the final cut.
- 1:01:08Speaker 4: I mean, yeah, it's disappointing.
- 1:01:10Speaker 3: But at the same time, I feel like my peers
- 1:01:12Speaker 3: know kind of what the real deal is. And about
- 1:01:16Speaker 3: the third time I didn't make it, I was dropping
- 1:01:18Speaker 3: my daughter Shiloh off at a tournament out in Orange County.
- 1:01:21Speaker 3: And so we got to the venue and then all
- 1:01:23Speaker 3: of a sudden my phone lights up and it says Clyde.
- 1:01:26Speaker 4: So I tell my daughter, you're going in. I got
- 1:01:28Speaker 4: to take this. So Clyde, that's Walt Frazier. You're next.
- 1:01:31Speaker 3: And so I was like, what's up, man? He's like, man,
- 1:01:33Speaker 3: this is some bullshit, man. F these motherfuckers, man. F them, man.
- 1:01:37Speaker 3: You deserve to be in the Hall of Fame.
- 1:01:38Speaker 4: They did the same shit to me, man.
- 1:01:40Speaker 3: Blah, blah, blah, blah, blah. This don't define who you
- 1:01:42Speaker 3: are as.
- 1:01:42Speaker 4: A person or as a man. I was like, Clyde,
- 1:01:44Speaker 4: can I quote you on that? Yeah, you can quote
- 1:01:45Speaker 4: me on that shit, man.
- 1:01:46Speaker 3: F these motherfuckers.
- 1:01:48Speaker 4: F them, man.
- 1:01:48Speaker 3: F them. And so... My sentiments aren't that harsh, but
- 1:01:52Speaker 3: at the same time, it's like, hey, if it happens,
- 1:01:54Speaker 3: it happens.
- 1:01:55Speaker 4: If it doesn't, I'm not going to lose any sleep
- 1:01:57Speaker 4: over it.
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: They got to get you in there. Yeah, you got
- 1:01:59Speaker 1: to get you in there.
- 1:02:01Speaker 5: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:01Speaker 6: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:02Speaker 1: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:03Speaker 3: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:04Speaker 3: Hey, dude. Hey, dude. Hey, dude.
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:07Speaker 5: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:07Speaker 3: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:08Speaker 2: Hey, dude.
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: It was a new game to this plan. Well, you
- 1:02:18Speaker 1: know what I'm saying? You go through the time, the
- 1:02:20Speaker 1: different areas and put teams together who can get a tool.
- 1:02:21Speaker 3: No.
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: Right. And people was looking at your set.
- 1:02:23Speaker 3: I was like, who is this? Like, no, he was
- 1:02:25Speaker 3: getting one of those. One of the combinations.
- 1:02:29Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:02:30Speaker 3: There you go.
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: It was like 25.
- 1:02:32Speaker 4: And that's, that's funny.
- 1:02:33Speaker 3: Cause, uh, and that was the other thing that, that, that, that,
- 1:02:37Speaker 3: had me relatable to the younger generation.
- 1:02:39Speaker 4: I'd have, like, just randoms coming up to me. Man,
- 1:02:41Speaker 4: you know, you got a 96?
- 1:02:42Speaker 3: You're a 96 on 2K or whatever. 94, 95, whatever
- 1:02:47Speaker 3: it was. I'm like, nah, what does that mean? It
- 1:02:50Speaker 3: means you're really good.
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: You're really good. Then you better get them checks. For sure. Ronnie,
- 1:02:55Speaker 1: make it right.
- 1:02:56Speaker 3: Yeah, for sure, for sure.
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: All right, we'll get out of here. We got to
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: talk about, obviously, still tapping with the Bucks. Hell of
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: an offseason.
- 1:03:02Speaker 3: Hell of an offseason.
- 1:03:03Speaker 1: Y'all, this is now South Beach.
- 1:03:05Speaker 3: Woof.
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: What's going on, T? I think they're going to be good, man.
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: I think they're going to be an underrated team.
- 1:03:10Speaker 4: Why do you say that? Why do you say that?
- 1:03:11Speaker 2: I just like Tyler Hero. I think he's going to
- 1:03:13Speaker 2: have a chip on his shoulder from leaving Miami. Not
- 1:03:16Speaker 2: to say they didn't want him, but obviously he was
- 1:03:18Speaker 2: a trade piece for Giannis. You got Miles Turner, who's
- 1:03:21Speaker 2: coming off of, I would say, a disappointing year for himself.
- 1:03:23Speaker 2: So he's going to bounce back. Then you got the
- 1:03:25Speaker 2: young guys. Rylance is going to come ready to play.
- 1:03:27Speaker 2: Kevin Porter Jr., he's fighting for a contract. He's going
- 1:03:30Speaker 2: to play well.
- 1:03:31Speaker 3: Braylon Burress, this kid out of Arizona.
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: Nice. He can score the ball. Khalil Ware. Khalil Ware,
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: a talented big that they got out of that track.
- 1:03:38Speaker 1: I got to play him.
- 1:03:39Speaker 6: Amen.
- 1:03:39Speaker 4: Amen.
- 1:03:39Speaker 3: The kid from Tennessee. I mean, he's down in the
- 1:03:41Speaker 3: ball right now, but give him some time to develop.
- 1:03:44Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 1:03:44Speaker 4: No, it's going to be interesting, man.
- 1:03:46Speaker 1: I just think they underrated. Yeah.
- 1:03:48Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, Javi Jaquez. I mean, Javi.
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: Javi.
- 1:03:52Speaker 3: Javi 15 a game last year.
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: You know, Miami. I think a play-in team. I'm shooting
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: for play. Hell no. I mean, you got to think
- 1:03:58Speaker 1: about Charlotte. We said the same thing about Charlotte last year.
- 1:04:01Speaker 3: Yeah, did you?
- 1:04:02Speaker 1: You got to use Khalil Ware though, bro. They can't
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: use what they did in Miami. They are. Option number
- 1:04:08Speaker 1: one shots for sure. Oh, yeah.
- 1:04:11Speaker 3: The great story about Tyler is that he played for
- 1:04:12Speaker 3: the Milwaukee Playground Warriors. This inner city team played at
- 1:04:16Speaker 3: the Hillside Projects. I live downtown.
- 1:04:19Speaker 4: That's where you hear all the shooting coming from.
- 1:04:21Speaker 3: That area of the town two or three times a month.
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: Gunplay.
- 1:04:25Speaker 3: But he grew up playing.
- 1:04:29Speaker 4: At the boys club at the hillside project. So I'm
- 1:04:31Speaker 4: just saying, he's got.
- 1:04:31Speaker 3: This, he's got, but he's back at home, but he's
- 1:04:34Speaker 3: got this attitude. He's got chip, this attitude and, that
- 1:04:38Speaker 3: he brings to the court that I just love as
- 1:04:39Speaker 3: a player.
- 1:04:40Speaker 4: And what kind of year did he have last year?
- 1:04:42Speaker 4: I know he was hurt.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Yeah, he was okay.
- 1:04:45Speaker 3: But I think he had that all-star season.
- 1:04:47Speaker 1: I think he's ready. He's due for another one.
- 1:04:49Speaker 4: Yeah, he's due for another one.
- 1:04:50Speaker 1: And it's about that contract time, too. You know what
- 1:04:53Speaker 1: time it is.
- 1:04:54Speaker 3: Yeah, I like the collection of young players. Taylor Jenkins,
- 1:04:58Speaker 3: I love as a coach. Was he?
- 1:05:00Speaker 1: Yeah, I was in Atlanta.
- 1:05:02Speaker 3: Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah. Because he was gone the championship year,
- 1:05:05Speaker 3: but Watching him, Jeff, I mean, just, this is in Milwaukee,
- 1:05:09Speaker 3: the one year he was there, but he would do
- 1:05:11Speaker 3: the post-practice shooting games. He had a whole round robin tournament,
- 1:05:16Speaker 3: the whole four thing, and the guys just were plugged
- 1:05:19Speaker 3: in and going, talking trash to each other. But, I mean, really,
- 1:05:22Speaker 3: really putting in a whole lot of energy and effort
- 1:05:24Speaker 3: on just something that's normally guys not really tripping on. Like, hey,
- 1:05:28Speaker 3: this practice is over with. I'm just going to get
- 1:05:30Speaker 3: some shots up and I'm out of here. But, I mean,
- 1:05:31Speaker 3: it was a whole thing. Yeah. His energy level for
- 1:05:34Speaker 3: this young team, what we got right now, I think
- 1:05:36Speaker 3: is perfect.
- 1:05:36Speaker 4: So, you know, and what he did in Memphis.
- 1:05:38Speaker 1: That's the same thing I was just about to say. Yeah,
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: the same.
- 1:05:41Speaker 2: Not to say, you know, John Morant and them was young,
- 1:05:43Speaker 2: but he got them going quick.
- 1:05:44Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: Memphis wasn't supposed to be good.
- 1:05:47Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: Number two in the West, bro. He got it cracking. Yeah,
- 1:05:50Speaker 1: they weren't supposed to be good that quick. The East
- 1:05:52Speaker 1: is just so loaded.
- 1:05:54Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: It is loaded. Yeah. It's kind of top-heavy, though. For
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: them to be playing, bro. It's kind of top-heavy. I
- 1:05:58Speaker 1: don't want to speak too much on the East. I mean,
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: it's kind of top-heavy, though. You got Boston. You got
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: New York.
- 1:06:03Speaker 3: Philly.
- 1:06:04Speaker 1: Philly. Got Miami, I guess. Cleveland.
- 1:06:07Speaker 3: Did I put Cleveland up there?
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: Cleveland.
- 1:06:10Speaker 3: I mean, you know.
- 1:06:11Speaker 1: L.A., yes, sir.
- 1:06:12Speaker 2: But after that, it's kind of, hold on, you're not
- 1:06:14Speaker 2: going to mention, right now, we got Indiana.
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: I like Tyrese.
- 1:06:18Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah, Tyrese is back.
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: But that's six right there. After that.
- 1:06:21Speaker 3: Orlando, you know, Orlando with Sean Sweeney, my guy from
- 1:06:23Speaker 3: Milwaukee with Jason Kidd, Dallas.
- 1:06:26Speaker 4: He's a head coach. Ben Carroll's been working out with Kevin.
- 1:06:29Speaker 3: Durant the whole summer.
- 1:06:30Speaker 4: I think I read.
- 1:06:30Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:06:31Speaker 3: That's going to be interesting.
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I mean, they could be one of those teams. Well,
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: Orlando's the same team. We keep saying, yeah, bronze and P5.
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: Are they going to play this season? You didn't even
- 1:06:42Speaker 1: mention the Hawks.
- 1:06:42Speaker 2: But it's the same. I think I like the Hawks.
- 1:06:44Speaker 2: You know, I'm a Hawks guy, but it's the same way.
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: We lost.
- 1:06:47Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:06:48Speaker 2: Y'all don't know. We had Kaminga. Kaminga played a big
- 1:06:52Speaker 2: role for us.
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: He gone.
- 1:06:53Speaker 4: I don't know.
- 1:06:56Speaker 1: I hope the Hawks do well, but I think Milwaukee's
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: going to be it.
- 1:06:58Speaker 2: I mean, to be fair, you know, I'll be hating,
- 1:07:00Speaker 2: but Picking up Lou Dort, Aaron Wiggins, I think I
- 1:07:02Speaker 2: had a hell of an offseason.
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: Yeah, I think I had a hell of an offseason, bro.
- 1:07:05Speaker 2: That should be nice, bro. Because we was terrible before
- 1:07:09Speaker 2: Trae Young, Trae.
- 1:07:10Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:07:11Speaker 1: It was wicked. It was wicked for Stuart. Well, Hung,
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: just have fun this season.
- 1:07:15Speaker 3: It's about the Sixers, though. I mean, so, yeah, LeBron, but, God,
- 1:07:20Speaker 3: Jalen Brown.
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: All right, what's your honest opinion on it?
- 1:07:23Speaker 3: Well, William, my honest opinion is that Jalen Brown, Tyrese Maxey,
- 1:07:29Speaker 3: the young boy, Edgecrow. I mean, they got a lot
- 1:07:31Speaker 3: of talent. I don't know what the bench is like,
- 1:07:33Speaker 3: but a guy that could be really key off that
- 1:07:37Speaker 3: bench is a UCLA guy, Dembona.
- 1:07:39Speaker 1: Yeah.
- 1:07:40Speaker 3: He's like 6'8, 6'9, but he's an energy guy. Ben
- 1:07:42Speaker 3: Wallace kind of running, jumping, dunking, shot blocking. So depending
- 1:07:46Speaker 3: on Embiid and how much he can play.
- 1:07:48Speaker 1: Not much.
- 1:07:48Speaker 3: But they've got so many.
- 1:07:51Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:07:52Speaker 4: High usage guys.
- 1:07:53Speaker 3: Their cumulative usage is like 134% whatever, just cumulative guys
- 1:07:58Speaker 3: based on last year, which is crazy. But I think
- 1:08:00Speaker 3: if they can kind of figure that out, LeBron, I
- 1:08:03Speaker 3: don't think wants all that smoke right now. I think
- 1:08:05Speaker 3: he's going to be happy to defer. He's got guys
- 1:08:08Speaker 3: he can defer to. I love him. I love Jalen Brown.
- 1:08:11Speaker 3: It's going to be interesting, man. They're going to be tough.
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: Who do you think would be easier to jail? Miami
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: or Philly? Miami. You ain't got to go in there.
- 1:08:22Speaker 4: I just, you know.
- 1:08:23Speaker 6: Yeah.
- 1:08:24Speaker 3: I like Miami. Me too.
- 1:08:25Speaker 4: In terms of easier to jail.
- 1:08:26Speaker 3: I agree.
- 1:08:27Speaker 1: I mean, Giannis. Ball on.
- 1:08:29Speaker 3: Giannis gets a lot of criticism for the lack of
- 1:08:32Speaker 3: the jumper, but he's so reliable. You keep putting 30
- 1:08:36Speaker 3: and 12. 30 and 12. You know, however he gets it.
- 1:08:40Speaker 3: And then just stuff I'm reading, Davion Mitchell coming back
- 1:08:43Speaker 3: is in great shape. Yeah. And now he's, he had
- 1:08:46Speaker 3: a 40, percent three-point shooting year last year. Now he's
- 1:08:49Speaker 3: in great shape. And Wiggins, their defense, Bam and Giannis defensively.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: Incredible. They shutting that paint down.
- 1:08:56Speaker 3: I mean, damn, yeah, those took me. Bam, I'm just
- 1:08:58Speaker 3: thinking about him defensively. He's one of the guys.
- 1:08:59Speaker 4: That gave Giannis the toughest time as a defender.
- 1:09:02Speaker 3: And now you got him and Giannis. Giannis is going
- 1:09:04Speaker 3: to be motivated, trying to prove a point, blah, blah, blah.
- 1:09:06Speaker 3: 31 years old, chance to win another championship with the Heat.
- 1:09:09Speaker 3: Pat Riley's kind of culture down there that he's developed
- 1:09:12Speaker 3: in terms of low body, fat, being in great shape. So,
- 1:09:16Speaker 3: I mean, Miami's going to be interesting. And Eric Spocher,
- 1:09:17Speaker 3: I love him as a coach.
- 1:09:18Speaker 1: He just, you know.
- 1:09:19Speaker 2: I couldn't find any player that fits Miami's system better
- 1:09:22Speaker 2: than Giannis.
- 1:09:23Speaker 4: Yeah.
- 1:09:23Speaker 1: Like, he a workout freak.
- 1:09:25Speaker 3: Right.
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: Yeah. So, like, to fit that system, it's a match
- 1:09:28Speaker 1: made in heaven right there.
- 1:09:29Speaker 2: Yeah. But one thing people ain't talking about, defending champs.
- 1:09:31Speaker 2: The Knicks brought everybody back. I know sometimes you get
- 1:09:33Speaker 2: a championship hangover. Get a little full from getting dumped.
- 1:09:36Speaker 1: That loss for Mr.
- 1:09:36Speaker 3: Robinson.
- 1:09:37Speaker 1: Big, bro. That is a big loss for sure.
- 1:09:39Speaker 2: Mr.
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: Robinson was a monster. That is a big loss. I
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: don't even know how you refilled that position. I hope
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: Andre Drummick, you know what I'm saying, could fill that role. Yeah,
- 1:09:47Speaker 1: Dre had to go ass, though. He had to go.
- 1:09:49Speaker 1: I like Mr. Robinson. Hey, that's crazy because Drumm is
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: one of the best offensive rebounders, period.
- 1:09:54Speaker 2: He is.
- 1:09:54Speaker 1: Mr. Robinson, top tier.
- 1:09:57Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: But that works out for the Celtics I didn't mention
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: as well.
- 1:09:59Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: Nah, I got them on the top.
- 1:10:01Speaker 3: Five for sure.
- 1:10:02Speaker 4: Celtics, yeah, no, without question, man. But it's tough to repeat.
- 1:10:06Speaker 4: I don't think there's been a repeat champion. I don't know, seven, eight, nine.
- 1:10:09Speaker 4: It's been a while. I can't even remember the last
- 1:10:11Speaker 4: team to win back.
- 1:10:12Speaker 1: Golden State, probably.
- 1:10:13Speaker 3: Was it?
- 1:10:13Speaker 4: Okay.
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: Probably Golden State.
- 1:10:14Speaker 3: That's a little 217s, 218s.
- 1:10:15Speaker 4: Yeah, yeah.
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: And that's one of the best teams we've ever seen
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: in our life.
- 1:10:19Speaker 3: Yeah, yeah. Yeah, the KD.
- 1:10:21Speaker 1: Yeah, the KD.
- 1:10:21Speaker 3: Yeah.
- 1:10:22Speaker 4: Yeah, two-peated in Golden State. So I just, you know, for.
- 1:10:27Speaker 4: The Knicks is going to be hard from that standpoint.
- 1:10:29Speaker 3: Just the energy that they expended getting there, playing until
- 1:10:34Speaker 3: mid to late June and all the stuff they had
- 1:10:36Speaker 3: to go through, the pressure moments they had to perform
- 1:10:39Speaker 3: that they did. They embraced them, but Now to come
- 1:10:41Speaker 3: back and do it again, running back like that, man,
- 1:10:43Speaker 3: that's going to be tough. And the other teams have
- 1:10:45Speaker 3: gotten better.
- 1:10:46Speaker 1: Yeah, New York got their chip.
- 1:10:47Speaker 3: Toronto got better. Toronto with Kawhi.
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: Come on, baby. I forgot about it. Now I'll be here.
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Let's talk about it.
- 1:10:53Speaker 3: Toronto.
- 1:10:53Speaker 1: The real is back. Let's go.
- 1:10:55Speaker 2: He don't want to acknowledge that Kawhi put a chip up,
- 1:10:58Speaker 2: but he's back to reclaim the throne, bro.
- 1:11:00Speaker 1: The squad is back. They'll be cool, though. It'll be
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: a good thing.
- 1:11:03Speaker 2: Now we'll see what happens for sure, man. OG, listen, man,
- 1:11:05Speaker 2: we appreciate you, man. Honored to have you here. Couldn't
- 1:11:07Speaker 2: believe it. Glad we could make it happen, man. Crystal
- 1:11:09Speaker 2: Chronicles is out now, correct?
- 1:11:10Speaker 3: Yes, it is.
- 1:11:11Speaker 1: Absolutely. On Amazon.
- 1:11:12Speaker 3: Pick it up.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: It's a good read. Yeah, good read, man. OG. Always welcome.
- 1:11:16Speaker 2: Appreciate you pulling up for sure, man. We got to
- 1:11:19Speaker 2: talk about the Bucs later this season, man.
- 1:11:20Speaker 1: I ain't no user at school. We got to kick
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: it again. I got to pull up. We got to
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: go out.
- 1:11:29Speaker 3: I didn't even, like, you know, get into, like, the
- 1:11:31Speaker 3: really good stuff.
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: My good material.
- 1:11:34Speaker 3: I'm going to save it for the next time.
