- 0:05Speaker 1: All right, we're back here on foul Territory and we've
- 0:07Speaker 1: got Chris Cattilla, Red Sox beat, writer from masslive dot com,
- 0:11Speaker 1: co host of the Family Rundown podcast, and an instructor
- 0:15Speaker 1: at Boston College. Beautiful campus, by the way.
- 0:20Speaker 2: Not qualified for it, but it is a beautiful campus. Yeah,
- 0:24Speaker 2: well was that.
- 0:25Speaker 3: Not qualified for the professing all the time, but it
- 0:28Speaker 3: is a nice campus.
- 0:29Speaker 2: Yeah.
- 0:31Speaker 1: I absolutely love Boston and listen to your podcast all
- 0:35Speaker 1: the time. You are joining us from Vegas. You're at
- 0:37Speaker 1: the GN meetings. What's the latest going on there? What
- 0:40Speaker 1: are you hearing?
- 0:41Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean it's been kind of slow, I think,
- 0:43Speaker 3: as it always is this time of year. People think
- 0:47Speaker 3: that this is going to be an action packed week
- 0:49Speaker 3: like the Winter Meetings are, and it really never is.
- 0:52Speaker 3: There's a lot of guys here to golf at Shadow Creek.
- 0:55Speaker 3: The awards are tonight, so it's a lot of like
- 0:57Speaker 3: hanging out in the lobby and talking. But it's not
- 1:00Speaker 3: a lot of news, as it never is in November.
- 1:03Speaker 3: But you know, it sets the groundwork for the Winter
- 1:05Speaker 3: Meetings in a month and the moves that will happen
- 1:07Speaker 3: between now and then.
- 1:09Speaker 4: Chris, first of all, by the way, you're not qualified
- 1:12Speaker 4: for Boston College. It's above your payger. But what about
- 1:16Speaker 4: Craig Broslow. Craig Groslow went to where'd you go? Yell?
- 1:19Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, nailed next team, and he said the Red
- 1:24Speaker 5: Sox are going to be in a starting pitcher, but
- 1:27Speaker 5: they're not going to spend a lot of money, and
- 1:29Speaker 5: they're not going to be in the bullpen, and they
- 1:30Speaker 5: don't want to trade, but they might trade.
- 1:32Speaker 4: What the heck is he really saying? Can you explain
- 1:34Speaker 4: it to me?
- 1:35Speaker 6: Because we've talked about this now He's like, we want
- 1:37Speaker 6: to talk to our top one two starter. We don't
- 1:40Speaker 6: want to play pay the heavy price, but we're willing
- 1:42Speaker 6: to trade, but we're not Can you explain this because
- 1:45Speaker 6: I'm kind of confused about what he said.
- 1:48Speaker 3: Yeah, as he always tends to say, they are open
- 1:52Speaker 3: to all opportunities to improve the team and they're going
- 1:54Speaker 3: to take nothing off the table, which is earth shattering
- 1:56Speaker 3: stuff whenever he does say it. But I mean, I
- 1:58Speaker 3: think they're going to be in on all the top
- 2:01Speaker 3: trade candidates for starting pitchers, and I think they're going
- 2:03Speaker 3: to be like they were last year, in on all
- 2:05Speaker 3: the free agents and see you know who the fit is.
- 2:07Speaker 3: You know, a year ago they were in on Freed
- 2:09Speaker 3: and only after he signed with the Yankees did they
- 2:11Speaker 3: really hone in on Crochet and get that done. They
- 2:14Speaker 3: obviously need a bat too, between either Schwarber or Alonso
- 2:18Speaker 3: or somebody from the trade market, whatever it might be.
- 2:20Speaker 3: So I think they, you know, have the money to
- 2:23Speaker 3: sign one free agent. You know, Alex Bregman's Bunny is
- 2:26Speaker 3: off the books, obviously, Devers is, Crochet is getting a
- 2:30Speaker 3: massive raise on the CBT. Roman Anthony is getting a
- 2:33Speaker 3: massive raise and the CBT. But there's still money to spend,
- 2:35Speaker 3: and they still do have, you know, a lot of
- 2:37Speaker 3: good young players to get a trade done. So I
- 2:40Speaker 3: think they're gonna get one big name in the lineup,
- 2:42Speaker 3: one big name in the starting rotation. And you think
- 2:46Speaker 3: about just the way resources work, probably makes sense that
- 2:49Speaker 3: they do one of those guys via trade in one
- 2:51Speaker 3: via free agency. I think, you know, they're going to
- 2:54Speaker 3: exceed the CBT again. If they don't, it's an insult
- 2:57Speaker 3: to fans after you know, kind of the young core
- 2:59Speaker 3: came up and took a big step last year, and
- 3:02Speaker 3: a trade's going to be painful, like it was with Crochet,
- 3:05Speaker 3: but we saw, you know, guy who finished second in
- 3:07Speaker 3: Cy Young was an ace capital a ace all year.
- 3:11Speaker 3: They know it's worth it. They did it a year ago,
- 3:12Speaker 3: and I think they'll be looking to do that again,
- 3:14Speaker 3: whether it's Joe Ryan or somebody else like that.
- 3:17Speaker 7: If we were looking at the Red Sox at this
- 3:19Speaker 7: time last year. Has there been a seismic shift in
- 3:23Speaker 7: how they're moving this organization? I mean, they got like
- 3:26Speaker 7: you said, they got rid of Devers. They actually spent
- 3:30Speaker 7: some money. Now it was a one year deal on Bregman.
- 3:33Speaker 7: They could have been on the hook for two more
- 3:34Speaker 7: if he had really flopped. But is there a seismic
- 3:38Speaker 7: shift or is it really just kind of a slow
- 3:41Speaker 7: bleed into this new regime.
- 3:44Speaker 3: I mean I think they you know, they spent money
- 3:46Speaker 3: by extending Crochet and extending Anthony.
- 3:49Speaker 2: You know, those deals are probably going to be discounts
- 3:52Speaker 2: by the end of them.
- 3:52Speaker 3: I think with Anthony it might already be eight for
- 3:55Speaker 3: one point thirty for a guy who is gonna, you know,
- 3:57Speaker 3: potentially be a perennial All Star.
- 3:59Speaker 2: But you know, they are a flawed team.
- 4:01Speaker 3: You know, you saw that in the playoffs where they
- 4:03Speaker 3: had Crochet in Game one, but they were so depleted
- 4:06Speaker 3: at that point that BeO didn't get past the second
- 4:09Speaker 3: or the third inning in Game two, and then Gilito
- 4:11Speaker 3: was hurt and they had to go to a guy
- 4:13Speaker 3: making his fifth major league start. So they want another
- 4:15Speaker 3: horse to be able to pitch game two of a
- 4:17Speaker 3: playoff game. They also struck out too much and didn't
- 4:21Speaker 3: hit enough home runs, especially you know, against good opponents
- 4:23Speaker 3: last year, and I think they need that thumper. Schwarber
- 4:26Speaker 3: and Alonso are clear fits, but everybody could use those guys.
- 4:29Speaker 3: I think that, you know, they have just by being
- 4:32Speaker 3: around seeing John Henry be there more in person. Obviously
- 4:35Speaker 3: still not talking to us because who would, but he
- 4:38Speaker 3: was around the ballpark and he was a little bit
- 4:40Speaker 3: more involved. He was a little bit more you know there,
- 4:42Speaker 3: and obviously he showed it, you know, with a big
- 4:45Speaker 3: payroll jump. The Devors thing to me, they didn't add
- 4:50Speaker 3: Bregman and add Crochet's you know, future money and stuff,
- 4:53Speaker 3: knowing that they were going to deal break Devers. It
- 4:56Speaker 3: just it became an untenable situation. And it happened to
- 4:59Speaker 3: be with a guy who was getting paid, you know,
- 5:02Speaker 3: thirty million a year. Over ten, So they do have
- 5:04Speaker 3: that money to spend, or at least part of it,
- 5:07Speaker 3: and I think they owe it to the fans to
- 5:09Speaker 3: do so, and I think they will. You know, I
- 5:11Speaker 3: don't think they're going to be with the Dodgers and
- 5:13Speaker 3: Mets in terms of payroll, but I think they're going
- 5:15Speaker 3: to be you know, past you know, potentially the second
- 5:17Speaker 3: CBT is what I hope they do because I think, again,
- 5:21Speaker 3: the team played well enough to deserve it last year,
- 5:23Speaker 3: and the fan base does after you know, the years
- 5:26Speaker 3: of the full throttle promises and things like that. They
- 5:28Speaker 3: did have a big offseason last year. It was spread out.
- 5:31Speaker 3: Crochet was in December, Gregman was in February. But still
- 5:34Speaker 3: they did a lot and I think they'll do the same.
- 5:36Speaker 3: And I think Breslo's also setting high expectations. He's not
- 5:40Speaker 3: saying we'll see how it goes. He's saying, we need
- 5:42Speaker 3: a thumper and we need a one B in the rotation,
- 5:45Speaker 3: like that's what we're going to aim for. And I
- 5:47Speaker 3: think if he doesn't deliver on that, you know, he
- 5:50Speaker 3: knows the consequences, at least public perception wise.
- 5:55Speaker 1: Chris, you mentioned Joe Ryan. I was there the day
- 5:58Speaker 1: after the trade deadline, did a game Friday Night Baseball
- 6:01Speaker 1: and spoke to Craig Breslo, and he said that they
- 6:04Speaker 1: had an agreement with the Twins. They were down to
- 6:07Speaker 1: the wire. They thought they were going to get, you know,
- 6:10Speaker 1: potentially him. They're looking for a front line starter. Do
- 6:13Speaker 1: you think that those talks could pick up or who
- 6:15Speaker 1: do you think that they're targeting in terms of frontline starter?
- 6:19Speaker 2: I mean, he is the obvious guy.
- 6:21Speaker 3: I think the kind of interesting part of that deadline
- 6:26Speaker 3: day for the Red Sox and Twins was that the
- 6:28Speaker 3: Red Sox thought they were on the one yard line
- 6:30Speaker 3: on the Joe Ryan trade. The Twins didn't think that
- 6:33Speaker 3: at all. The Twins. I had somebody with the Twins
- 6:35Speaker 3: tell me twenty minutes before the deadline they're not even
- 6:38Speaker 3: close with what they're offering. And so I don't know
- 6:41Speaker 3: if there's like bad blood between the front offices that
- 6:44Speaker 3: leaks into the.
- 6:46Speaker 6: Hold on Chris time out, Chris, Chris time out, hold
- 6:48Speaker 6: on kick show show my screen, Hold up, you guys
- 6:52Speaker 6: know this guy him?
- 6:53Speaker 4: Do you guys know who he is?
- 6:55Speaker 2: That's it.
- 6:56Speaker 4: That's it, Sorry, Chris dot continue with the Red Sox.
- 6:58Speaker 4: He didn't play for the Red Sox because you see
- 7:07Speaker 4: he wears his hat back and that's cool.
- 7:09Speaker 6: We know why, we know why because of you.
- 7:13Speaker 2: I know. That's a.
- 7:19Speaker 4: Thank you. Sorry, Chris. Continue.
- 7:24Speaker 3: I mean, if there's if there's people you're going to
- 7:27Speaker 3: be upstaged in the middle of a hit for, I
- 7:29Speaker 3: think that's right at the top of the list, right.
- 7:31Speaker 7: Sorry, I would have agreed to that too. I would
- 7:33Speaker 7: have agreed to that.
- 7:34Speaker 2: I would. Sorry.
- 7:36Speaker 7: Maybe if maybe, if Michael Jordan comes in, Chris will
- 7:39Speaker 7: do the same thing, all right.
- 7:43Speaker 4: That would be I don't even know what you're talking about.
- 7:45Speaker 4: But the best part of that was I don't either.
- 7:47Speaker 2: Now did Goes did.
- 7:49Speaker 4: The Red Sox sign? Somebody? Do I need to know something?
- 7:51Speaker 4: I'm like, No, I just wanted to show you on camera,
- 7:53Speaker 4: so thank you. Always continue now.
- 7:55Speaker 6: I don't even know what you're doing, but thank you, guys.
- 7:59Speaker 4: After this a j no comment, no comment.
- 8:03Speaker 6: I'm just saying, I just I didn't want to name drop,
- 8:06Speaker 6: but I just face dropped out.
- 8:11Speaker 8: Yeah.
- 8:11Speaker 3: I mean if I if I were you, guys, I
- 8:12Speaker 3: would have kicked me off the call as soon as
- 8:14Speaker 3: he popped in.
- 8:16Speaker 7: Never never, we need to hear why the Red Sox
- 8:19Speaker 7: are gonna get Joe Ryan and how they didn't get
- 8:22Speaker 7: the job done. But Ken Griffy Jr. It's the only
- 8:24Speaker 7: reason I wear my hat backwards. But anyway, don't worry about.
- 8:27Speaker 2: It, Chris, Yes.
- 8:29Speaker 3: So for Griffy and the rest of the audience, they
- 8:33Speaker 3: did not The Twins did not think that they were
- 8:35Speaker 3: close to trading Joe Ryan and the Red Sox. The
- 8:38Speaker 3: Red Sox thought they were closer than they were, uh,
- 8:41Speaker 3: and that I think could you know, they obviously talk names,
- 8:45Speaker 3: and they all obviously had people that they liked in
- 8:47Speaker 3: those trade talks. The Twins had a couple of guys,
- 8:50Speaker 3: and you know, the Red Sox had a couple of
- 8:51Speaker 3: pictures emerged late in the season totally and early. I
- 8:54Speaker 3: think one of them would have to probably be in
- 8:56Speaker 3: that package. But you look around the league, there's more
- 8:58Speaker 3: guys available than there were then, and from you know,
- 9:01Speaker 3: Peralta and Milwaukee, potentially Green and Gore and Washington with
- 9:05Speaker 3: a guy in Paul Tabone who is just in Boston
- 9:07Speaker 3: for the last ten years. So between those guys and
- 9:10Speaker 3: the guys on the free agent market, there's a lot
- 9:13Speaker 3: of options for the Red Sox. I think you know,
- 9:15Speaker 3: what they're aiming for is somebody who is better than
- 9:17Speaker 3: Brian Bayo.
- 9:19Speaker 2: Slide Bayo to be your number three, figure.
- 9:21Speaker 3: Out the four and five from a bunch of internal candidates,
- 9:23Speaker 3: and then have the number two, you know, be a
- 9:27Speaker 3: big name, whether that be Joe, Ryan or any of
- 9:29Speaker 3: the other ten guys you could get this time of year.
- 9:32Speaker 7: What about their defense? What about their defense? It kind
- 9:36Speaker 7: of got overshadowed because they made the playoffs because they
- 9:40Speaker 7: had Scuball who I mean, Scooba Crochet, because they had
- 9:45Speaker 7: somebody that's like, ah, well, you know what, Crochet is
- 9:47Speaker 7: going to do great, so his defense must be good.
- 9:49Speaker 7: But really nobody needs to make any plays when he's
- 9:51Speaker 7: out there. He just punches everybody out and goes eight innings.
- 9:54Speaker 7: What about the defense? Are they going to be able
- 9:57Speaker 7: to upgrade just from their internal op.
- 10:02Speaker 3: I mean, I think that's a reason not to sign Alonso,
- 10:06Speaker 3: especially if he's intent on playing first. And Obora said
- 10:09Speaker 3: he was okay with Dhing, but you know he's the
- 10:12Speaker 3: guy that obviously the numbers are not good at first.
- 10:15Speaker 3: You put him over there and your infield defense gets worse.
- 10:18Speaker 3: Ennyo Suarez at third, that's kind of the same thing, right,
- 10:22Speaker 3: so Bregman at third would be a stabilizing force. Again,
- 10:25Speaker 3: it's it's interesting to me because the defense, you know,
- 10:28Speaker 3: leads the league of errors and it's not good and
- 10:30Speaker 3: it's a problem.
- 10:30Speaker 2: It costs him games.
- 10:31Speaker 3: But you have two goal glovers in the outfield and
- 10:34Speaker 3: Rafaela and Abreu, you have Bregman and Story on the
- 10:37Speaker 3: left side, so like, you know what big changes you know,
- 10:40Speaker 3: obviously Bregman's a free agent at this point, Story's back,
- 10:43Speaker 3: Like where do you make those changes? To me, I
- 10:46Speaker 3: would think about moving Story to second and getting a
- 10:48Speaker 3: pretty good shortstop, defensive shortstop wherever you can find that.
- 10:51Speaker 3: Breslo kind of ruled that out the other day, and
- 10:53Speaker 3: improvement at first base over kind of what they've run
- 10:56Speaker 3: out the last couple of years. Alonzo's not that so
- 10:59Speaker 3: you know, it's like it's on paper, it's a good
- 11:01Speaker 3: thing to improve the defense, but how do you do
- 11:03Speaker 3: it with the pieces you already have? And I think
- 11:05Speaker 3: that's an uphill battle, especially because you know some of
- 11:08Speaker 3: the lineup fits for them are not good defenders.
- 11:14Speaker 9: Krats pop quiz. What has thirty five grams of protein?

- 12:14Speaker 1: You said, ruled out moving story to second. He seemed
- 12:16Speaker 1: pretty definitive. That story is staying it short. But Alex Bregman,
- 12:19Speaker 1: you keep saying Bregman. Bregman is a free agent. He
- 12:22Speaker 1: opted out.
- 12:23Speaker 2: That's right.
- 12:25Speaker 1: What's going on there? Do you know something we don't know?
- 12:28Speaker 3: No?
- 12:28Speaker 2: I actually I you know, I think.
- 12:32Speaker 3: I think Red Sox fans think that it's a lock
- 12:34Speaker 3: that he comes back and a guarantee. I think that
- 12:38Speaker 3: it's you know, very much up in the air. Obviously,
- 12:41Speaker 3: he's a guy that enjoyed having for a year. But
- 12:43Speaker 3: I think some team is going to get in the
- 12:46Speaker 3: silly territory to put themselves over the edge, like a Seattle,
- 12:51Speaker 3: you know, or a Detroit or something like that, and
- 12:53Speaker 3: gives him, you know, a six year deal or you know,
- 12:56Speaker 3: maybe I don't know, extensive to a seven year deal
- 12:58Speaker 3: to secure the player without the qualifying offer attached. And
- 13:01Speaker 3: I think the Red Sox are going to be disciplined
- 13:03Speaker 3: with that. I don't think it's going to be a
- 13:04Speaker 3: blank check as much as they loved him, and I
- 13:07Speaker 3: think they could get out bid and that would really,
- 13:09Speaker 3: you know, throw the off season for a loop, because
- 13:12Speaker 3: I think he is, you know, one of the top priorities.
- 13:14Speaker 2: You know.
- 13:15Speaker 3: I was just saying, you know, like there is uh
- 13:18Speaker 3: even with him and story on the left side of
- 13:20Speaker 3: the infield, two veterans stabilizing forces the defense was still
- 13:23Speaker 3: bad as a whole. So to me, the question is like,
- 13:26Speaker 3: how do you improve that over? You know, having a
- 13:29Speaker 3: guy like Bregman who a year ago had won the
- 13:30Speaker 3: Gold Glove and a guy like Story who is thought
- 13:33Speaker 3: of as a good defender who kind of is in
- 13:34Speaker 3: decline with that. So it's an easier, easier thing, Like
- 13:38Speaker 3: I said, to say, let's make the defense better.
- 13:40Speaker 2: But how do you do it? That's a tough question.
- 13:44Speaker 4: All right, Chris, I want to know this.
- 13:45Speaker 6: You keep talking Aboutman, here's my thing, Alex Horror, who.
- 13:50Speaker 4: Will be on the show next week, Sam, just tease
- 13:52Speaker 4: for all.
- 13:53Speaker 2: The audience, Who's who's going to interrupt him? Lebron More?
- 14:00Speaker 4: Sorry, I'm a I'm an.
- 14:02Speaker 2: M MJ's a tar Hill, So that's all the matter.
- 14:05Speaker 6: I'm an MJ Goo Okay, not Lebron MJ's ago. But
- 14:08Speaker 6: I'll just say this, Ox Bar will be on next week.
- 14:11Speaker 6: And every time I talk to Alex for Right into Power,
- 14:13Speaker 6: Right hand of Power, Rakman's great Peter Alonzo?
- 14:16Speaker 4: Can we talk Pete Alonzo? How good would he look
- 14:19Speaker 4: going up there.
- 14:20Speaker 6: Mashing forty homers, driving in one hundred, playing one hundred
- 14:23Speaker 6: and sixty two games every year for the Red Sox.
- 14:26Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think that works in the lineup.
- 14:29Speaker 3: But the thing with first base if he if they
- 14:32Speaker 3: look at him that way. Obviously the range and the
- 14:34Speaker 3: numbers that you know, boris kind of dismissed yesterday but
- 14:37Speaker 3: are real should give them concern. And also, like you
- 14:41Speaker 3: have Tristan Kassas, who I don't think he at this
- 14:44Speaker 3: point has proven that he's going to be able to
- 14:47Speaker 3: hold that starting job, but he still has a lot
- 14:48Speaker 3: of upside and the organization appreciates it. Acknowledges that any
- 14:52Speaker 3: of Yoshida still under contract and you have too many
- 14:54Speaker 3: outfielders in spots and you need to probably DH one
- 14:58Speaker 3: of those guys. So to me, it's like there's gonna
- 15:00Speaker 3: be a hard decision somewhere, and I think they're going
- 15:03Speaker 3: to try to find that perfect world where they need
- 15:06Speaker 3: a power hitting first baseman who's also great defensively. If
- 15:09Speaker 3: you could find that guy and plug him in, that's perfect. Obviously,
- 15:12Speaker 3: I don't think they're going to be able to, So
- 15:15Speaker 3: you know, is it you trade Yoshida and you know,
- 15:17Speaker 3: pick up a lot of that salary and sign Alonzo
- 15:20Speaker 3: ver swore to be the d H and have Alonso
- 15:22Speaker 3: play the first well Costas works his way back. There's
- 15:25Speaker 3: a lot of different iterations of how that could go.
- 15:28Speaker 3: You know, obviously they need more power, power wins, playoff games.
- 15:31Speaker 3: You know, you look at who led them in home
- 15:33Speaker 3: runs last year. Devers was like fifth or sixth on
- 15:36Speaker 3: the team or maybe like fourth, and he didn't play
- 15:38Speaker 3: for them after June fifteenth. So that's a little striking.
- 15:41Speaker 3: You know, the guy's like a bray you can hit
- 15:43Speaker 3: it out story, but those guys are streaky, as we know.
- 15:46Speaker 3: So I do think they need that, you know, consistent
- 15:49Speaker 3: power bat that you know made Red Sox teams so
- 15:51Speaker 3: great in the past, especially with where they play.
- 15:54Speaker 6: Give me forty homers over over defense. Just Chris, by
- 15:58Speaker 6: the way, I don't know if you know where.
- 15:59Speaker 4: I am, but can you see what that is? You
- 16:03Speaker 4: know what that is?
- 16:04Speaker 2: Chris, I do not know.
- 16:06Speaker 7: Okay, you're not a Tariot fan, then that's a Michael
- 16:09Speaker 7: Jordan's golf course.
- 16:10Speaker 3: Oh okay, Yeah, I saw twenty three and I was like,
- 16:12Speaker 3: well that probably makes sense. We didn't overlap there, believe
- 16:16Speaker 3: it or not.
- 16:16Speaker 6: So really yeah, no way, No, I don't know.
- 16:23Speaker 1: Why there's not more Kyle Schreber back to the Red Sox.
- 16:26Speaker 4: Talk left handed, Heidi left handed, they need right handed.
- 16:30Speaker 3: He hits lefties as good as he hits righties, though,
- 16:32Speaker 3: which I think makes a possibility.
- 16:36Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, I am Teams four were over Alonso, and.
- 16:39Speaker 3: I think everyone is another but they another guy Kral
- 16:44Speaker 3: loves from when he was here in twenty twenty one
- 16:46Speaker 3: and he was, you know, amazing for them down the
- 16:49Speaker 3: stretch and the playoffs, a great leader, cultural fit.
- 16:52Speaker 2: I think, you know, with that, there's there's more doubt
- 16:54Speaker 2: that the.
- 16:55Speaker 3: Phillies let him walk compared to you know, the Mets
- 16:57Speaker 3: not resigning Alonso. I think you know, you talk people
- 17:00Speaker 3: here and they're like Dave Dombrowski doesn't let guys get away,
- 17:02Speaker 3: and the Red Sox are hoping and hoping their old
- 17:06Speaker 3: friend does let this guy get away to you know,
- 17:08Speaker 3: they I think Swber would be great. He was in
- 17:12Speaker 3: that twenty twenty one stretch and you know, but both
- 17:16Speaker 3: of them, I think, you know, pros and cons for sure.
- 17:20Speaker 1: Yeah, I don't think the Phillies let him get away either.
- 17:22Speaker 1: I mean, he's he's one of the guys that's the
- 17:23Speaker 1: heartbeat of that Team Chris, thank you so much for
- 17:26Speaker 1: joining us from Las Vegas, of all places. I'm sorry
- 17:29Speaker 1: we're so rudely interrupted by Ken Graffy Junior won't happen.
- 17:33Speaker 2: It's all good.
- 17:34Speaker 3: If it's anybody who's gonna do it, better be him.
- 17:38Speaker 8: Listen. I tried to party with Poppy one time and
- 17:40Speaker 8: almost die. Yeah you had a uh you have somebody
- 17:44Speaker 8: in another sports.
- 17:44Speaker 2: Which I was cool.
- 17:45Speaker 8: Yeah, I was cool to be Poppy.
- 17:47Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, hell yeah, oh yeah, I'm cool with
- 17:48Speaker 2: a Poppy. Yeah that's a real love too. Man Reap
- 17:51Speaker 2: forciate Yo. We'd be on the city a little bit.
- 17:54Speaker 2: He called me one night.
- 17:55Speaker 7: He was like, yo, take what yo?
- 17:57Speaker 2: I mean what Poppy?
- 17:58Speaker 8: I just hung up. I couldn't even I deserved.
- 18:01Speaker 2: I'm here and it was Poppy. I said, huh hey,
- 18:05Speaker 2: I don't over go side.
- 18:06Speaker 8: No no no, no, no, no no way.
- 18:10Speaker 2: Listen.
- 18:10Speaker 8: I tried to party with Poppy one time. It almost died.
- 18:13Speaker 8: Like fu kicks, he kicks it. And if you yeah, yeah,
- 18:18Speaker 8: you got something to do, don't don't fuck with Poppy.
- 18:24Speaker 1: Energy for days. Big Poppy. He he has some stories
- 18:28Speaker 1: to tell, and as you can see, people have stories
- 18:31Speaker 1: to tell.
- 18:31Speaker 4: With him.
- 18:31Speaker 1: I want to hear from you guys, all right, and
- 18:34Speaker 1: you're playing days in your gallivanting at golf course, days
- 18:38Speaker 1: with Justin Berlander and Michael Jordan, just waltzing by a
- 18:42Speaker 1: j who's the biggest partier, or a story that you
- 18:45Speaker 1: can share with us about going out in the big leagues.
- 18:48Speaker 6: I have too, I have to real quick. First of all, David.
- 18:50Speaker 6: I played with David and Saball so David forever again.
- 18:53Speaker 6: I once saw him crashed through a table because he
- 18:55Speaker 6: might have had remember the Old Century Club where he
- 18:57Speaker 6: tried to take a shot of beer for a man
- 19:00Speaker 6: it for one hundred straight minutes. He tried that one
- 19:03Speaker 6: time and he crashed through a coffee table. And ate
- 19:06Speaker 6: ball is one of the funniest things I've ever seen.
- 19:08Speaker 6: David denies it, but I was there along.
- 19:09Speaker 4: With multiple people. It was hilarious because he tried.
- 19:12Speaker 6: He stood up, he like, I'm fine, I'm fine through
- 19:15Speaker 6: the coffee table. And the second one was Jake Phebe.
- 19:18Speaker 6: If you've ever been out with Jake Phebe Height, you
- 19:20Speaker 6: know Jake Crouchy, you know Jake. It always ended up
- 19:22Speaker 6: till four or five in the morning, usually with him
- 19:25Speaker 6: playing at guitar. Clothing was optional for him at that point,
- 19:28Speaker 6: so it was always something with that.
- 19:31Speaker 7: I played with a guy I won't say his name.
- 19:33Speaker 7: He has since changed his ways kind of, but he said.
- 19:38Speaker 7: We went to New York City and he said, this
- 19:40Speaker 7: is the city that never sleeps. I'm the man that's
- 19:44Speaker 7: gonna beat the city that never sleeps. He went Friday night,
- 19:47Speaker 7: no sleep, came to the ballpark, pitched in the game.
- 19:50Speaker 7: Saturday Saturday, No Sleep came to the ballpark and gave
- 19:54Speaker 7: up four runs on a Sunday and passed out on
- 19:57Speaker 7: the table. He said, the city beat me.
- 20:02Speaker 1: I think it's New York City infinity. Everyone else that's
- 20:06Speaker 1: tried that zero there's just no he tried to beat it.
- 20:13Speaker 10: Oh, I think is uh like I said, oh my,
- 20:17Speaker 10: he loves big markets. And we go through a list
- 20:22Speaker 10: of the places that he may want to play, and
- 20:24Speaker 10: believe me, he is. He is someone who really wants
- 20:27Speaker 10: to be on a winning team and compete at the
- 20:29Speaker 10: highest level.
- 20:33Speaker 1: Maybe the Dodgers, like every other Japanese player that comes over, wants.
- 20:38Speaker 7: To Like every player, every player wants to play on
- 20:42Speaker 7: a winning team.
- 20:44Speaker 4: Was he talking about am I?
- 20:46Speaker 2: Yeah?
- 20:46Speaker 7: Am I?
- 20:47Speaker 4: Am I going to the Dodgers. Am I am.
- 20:51Speaker 6: I am I damn joke, we're in commercial No shit,
- 21:01Speaker 6: I want to play.
- 21:03Speaker 4: Nobody wants to plan a bad team like scheme said.
- 21:05Speaker 4: I don't want to plan a bad team. Nobody wants
- 21:08Speaker 4: to have been a bad team that sucks, hurt you.
- 21:09Speaker 4: Nobody put.
- 21:12Speaker 6: Bad teams a good game just sucks the other the
- 21:15Speaker 6: other go ahead.
- 21:17Speaker 1: We talked about how the Dodgers have cornered the market
- 21:21Speaker 1: on pitchers and players in general coming over from Japan, Like,
- 21:24Speaker 1: what is MLB gonna do to solve that? They can
- 21:27Speaker 1: just go over and sign every good player.
- 21:31Speaker 7: Nothing. Why did they have to do anything? They created
- 21:33Speaker 7: this environment for the last ten years. They started setting
- 21:36Speaker 7: it up ten years ago, probably even before that, and
- 21:39Speaker 7: then they started winning the division ten years ago. Like,
- 21:43Speaker 7: maybe the other team should put in a little effort,
- 21:46Speaker 7: put in a little effort to be able to do
- 21:47Speaker 7: the things. Maybe the Yankees shouldn't have taken a step
- 21:50Speaker 7: back in the Japanese market, I mean they had, they
- 21:53Speaker 7: were the destination. Massa here Tanaka told me, I will
- 21:56Speaker 7: never play for another team in the Big Leies, but
- 21:59Speaker 7: the New York Yankees because of what they meant to
- 22:01Speaker 7: me growing up and to my country. You know who's
- 22:04Speaker 7: taken over that, the Dodgers, And there's going to be
- 22:07Speaker 7: a cavalcade of young kids that want to be Dodgers
- 22:10Speaker 7: from now on, and other teams have to step up. No,
- 22:13Speaker 7: Major League Baseball shouldn't do anything. Well, everybody needs to
- 22:16Speaker 7: get a Japanese superstar. No, everyone else needs to figure
- 22:20Speaker 7: it out on their own.
- 22:22Speaker 1: All right, We've got a quote from Jackie Redman, who
- 22:24Speaker 1: by the way, used to be a roommate of mine.
- 22:26Speaker 1: Absolutely love Jackie. She's phenomenal, she says.
- 22:29Speaker 2: Love.
- 22:29Speaker 1: This from the New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan. Today,
- 22:32Speaker 1: we're in the business of the relentless pursuit of small improvements.
- 22:36Speaker 1: Those words were said to Sullivan seven years or years
- 22:38Speaker 1: ago by Heim Bloom, the current president of baseball operations
- 22:41Speaker 1: for the Cardinals formerly with the Red Sox. Sullivan said
- 22:45Speaker 1: the words have always stuck with him and the mentality
- 22:47Speaker 1: he wants the Rangers to adopt. To me, that's sports
- 22:50Speaker 1: in a nutshell. It's a daily endeavor.
- 22:52Speaker 2: Right.
- 22:52Speaker 1: We're not trying to climb the mountain today, We're trying
- 22:55Speaker 1: to take a step. We know what the ultimate goal
- 22:57Speaker 1: is but the daily endeavor, the pursuit of small improvements,
- 23:01Speaker 1: that's how you get there. So don't get ahead of yourself.
- 23:03Speaker 1: Stay in the moment. What do you guys think of that?
- 23:07Speaker 7: I love it, but I mean I was there when
- 23:09Speaker 7: Heim was running the Red Sox. I worked for the
- 23:11Speaker 7: Red Sox for like three minutes, and I saw it.
- 23:15Speaker 7: I saw the small, little increments that ended up creating
- 23:19Speaker 7: what they have now. And I think in the game,
- 23:22Speaker 7: not just in pro ball, but even in the amateur ranks,
- 23:25Speaker 7: like everybody wants these massive improvements. I want to increase
- 23:29Speaker 7: my exit velocity by five miles per hour and instead
- 23:33Speaker 7: of how can I get one percent better every day?
- 23:36Speaker 7: And I saw him implement that with the Red Sox,
- 23:39Speaker 7: and now we're seeing it come to fruition bad. I
- 23:43Speaker 7: was there in twenty one or twenty two, I forget
- 23:46Speaker 7: which year it was. Even now and now here in
- 23:48Speaker 7: twenty twenty five, they have a ton of young guys
- 23:51Speaker 7: coming up impacting the big league team, all because of
- 23:54Speaker 7: those small steps
