- 2:58go. Yes, it is me And it's a Wednesday night. And I
- 3:40know you guys are thinking, what in the world she don't used to be
- 3:46on on a Wednesday night? Well, I am you, guys, and
- 3:50tonight is a special night, okay, because I'm bringing it back home.
- 3:55Okay. I've known this young lady for years. And when I say years,
- 4:01are I mean years to the fact that my late mother actually babysitted her
- 4:06daughter. And yeah, I'll say this, I even dated one of her
- 4:11family members back in the day. Okay, So she's been a close friend
- 4:15to my family. Okay, and now she is out there trying to change.
- 4:21I'm not even gonna say trying. She is making changes in the community
- 4:26and It is an honor to have her on because this is a community and
- 4:30where I live. Okay, So I'm gonna bring up mister Meeky. I
- 4:34call her Miki, Hey girl, and how are you? Miss? I
- 4:46am putting on to see you? Clear? So you got so tonight,
- 4:54you guys. She is going to be doing something crazy awesome this summer in
- 4:59the community. And I want all you parents to sit down. Go ahead
- 5:04and get your paper and your pencils and your inform and something. You could
- 5:09write this information down, because this is gonna benefit you for the summer.
- 5:13Okay. We want to get our youth off the street, Okay, we
- 5:17want to get them involved in something for the summer. And missus gray came
- 5:23up with one of the most awesome ideas you guys. And she's gonna talk
- 5:29about it with me tonight. But first you gotta tell us a little bit
- 5:32about yourself. Well, my name is Jimmy gray Man. They may know
- 5:41you know me from Notch Auston, downtown, different areas. I am forty
- 5:46six years old, a mother of five and as she said, her late
- 5:53mother did raise my oldest daughter, which my oldest daughter is now twenty seven
- 5:57years old, and Yeah, she's been in the family. Yes, twenty
- 6:02seven years old. Yeah, I'm getting older, but you know, a
- 6:13single mother of five. I was an activist. I was PTA president for
- 6:20Sandus Clive for seven years. I did an election for the school board it.
- 6:28Yes, I've done a lot, but my biggest thing is the Whaling
- 6:30Harteen. It was founded in twenty twenty. In twenty nineteen, I moved
- 6:36into the whalen and saw that it was something of the nature where kids and
- 6:44where the youth and really the seniors had nothing to do. Crime was high,
- 6:50everything that you can think of, and the whaling was there. And
- 6:54if you know anything about the whaling in Dorchester, yeah, and that was
- 6:58not a place that you people willed to visit too often. When I moved
- 7:02there, there was nothing to do. So I came up with the Way
- 7:06Heart Team. And my model is if you if you put your heart to
- 7:12it, it will function. But if you do not put your heart to
- 7:15it, it will fail. Anything that you do not put your heart to
- 7:17it will fail. And so we've been next chair be five years. We
- 7:26just became nonprofit last year in February. We do double Dutch. We do
- 7:32skate days on the basketball court, so you put on your skates and you
- 7:35come skate around the court. We partner with a lot of people. We
- 7:42do double Dutch. Yes, do double Dutch in this summer. Yes,
- 7:47the Flyers girl. Yeah here, Yeah, we do the double Dutch.
- 7:53We bring out the DJ, have some food, have a good time and
- 7:55do the double Dutch. We also do skate days like the actual basketball court.
- 8:03We lock off the court and bring you skates and you just get around
- 8:05with the music to the DJ or whatever. We also have entrepreneurship days where
- 8:13we have entrepreneurs come out and teach the children. And then we have days
- 8:16where the entrepren where the kids actually set up their things that they have learned,
- 8:20and we have adults from all kinds of different businesses come and they actually
- 8:26shop with the kids. And we also partner. We also partner with other
- 8:33organizations, like we have Jesse and so in July, every Friday in July
- 8:39on the way On Park we have basketball. So we did basketball. Then
- 8:43that basketball every Friday in the month of July, which is so amazing,
- 8:48Like I just love just how everybody comes together to make this possible. But
- 8:56the summer, so I've gone these four years watching a lot of kids,
- 9:03and it's not necessarily just the whiling. It's a lot of areas, yes,
- 9:09and just seeing that a lot of single parents and a lot of people
- 9:13cannot afford summer camps. So instead of them trying to find the alternative,
- 9:18they a lot of kids to run in and out the streets, and crime
- 9:22goes up in the summer because the kids have nothing to do, so they
- 9:26breaking cars, they breaking homes, to be able to steal things, to
- 9:28be able to sell things, to be able to make money, to be
- 9:33able to do their certain things. And so when I sat down and I
- 9:37thought about, you know, just the things I've heard people have so many
- 9:41different summer camps, and I've heard people have things, Oh go ahead,
- 9:54do you mess and drop out the phone going girl. So my main focus
- 10:00was, Okay, forget the fact that I'm I'm shimmy. You understand what's
- 10:05saying. What literally can we do well? We can be able to put
- 10:11our egos down, and we can be able to put our adulthood down and
- 10:16realize that our babies need us, our babies need our help. It ain't
- 10:20about it, It ain't about the recognition, it ain't about the names,
- 10:24being called. It ain't about us getting awards or anything. It's about our
- 10:28babies and they're our next creature. There you go, and that is so
- 10:33true. And me and her we live in the same community, we maybe
- 10:37what five ten minutes away from each other, and what she see is what
- 10:41I see. And I used to get frustrated, like I would have these
- 10:46programs at the library. Bring your kids, bring your kids, bring your
- 10:48kids, but you have to realize that their parents are working. I was
- 10:52just speaking to our producer before we came on about a summer camp. You
- 10:58guys, that's just one week, half a day from nine to twelve.
- 11:03The summer camp. There's two hundred and seventy five dollars. Who can afford
- 11:07that? So mom, now that's week and weekly. That's only one week.
- 11:16You get one week in the camps. So Mama has to leave Jojo
- 11:20and Shanika home with big sister. But then you know, Juju and the
- 11:26ain't gonna listen nigga one around the street. And that's what because we have
- 11:31to realize that it's a different time, because I know when I was younger,
- 11:35we were lefting out. And if you if you open that door while
- 11:41while your parents was gone, come on, you listen, you you was
- 11:45gonna get it in that and they had that fair grand generation had that fear
- 11:48in us. And now this is a totally different generation. I get what
- 11:52they are going on. I'm going outside with my friend, and a lot
- 11:56of people don't realize it. This is a just a different generation from what
- 12:01we've dealt with. And so my whole thing is, I'm just tired of
- 12:07hearing that community organizations don't partner with each other, don't work together, don't
- 12:15collaborate together the way long our team is open to work with anybody, we
- 12:18are not. It's just when you put your egos down and you say,
- 12:24okay, my heart is truly going to be in this. What do we
- 12:28need to do to be able to save our babies, what do we need
- 12:33to do to be able to get our kids off the street for the summer.
- 12:35What do we need to do? And when you take the initiative to
- 12:39step forward, the name blaming, the blaming of this person ain't at this
- 12:43and that needs to stop. Literally, we have came up with a I'm
- 12:52so excited because I have so many different leaders and founders and we're still working
- 12:58out the logistics of different things, but I want them to be able to,
- 13:03like Ms. Alman saying, you know, have an affordable camp.
- 13:07I want to. I want little little, really little to nothing, because
- 13:13we not only are dealing with the children. And you have to honestly think
- 13:20that single mother goes out there to work a job. Mm hmmm. You
- 13:24have to think about the fact that she's out there going to a job.
- 13:30She's working a job to take care of these children. Mentally, she's also
- 13:35where she's not at. I've noticed that talking to single mothers and talking to
- 13:41single parents, they're not even on a reading level. But they may do
- 13:46whatever they can do because, for one, rent is high in South Carolina,
- 13:48Lord Jesus, and so yeah, we we have to we have to
- 13:56become right. We have to become the village for the village. We have
- 14:01to be the village for the village. In other words, we have to
- 14:05deal with the parents as well as we deal with the children. So what
- 14:11she has come up with, you guys, is she's trying to and I'm
- 14:13not saying you're trying to. She's going to be putting together a summer camp
- 14:18program. Can you tell us a little bit of the components of your summer
- 14:20camp program. So the components of the summer camp program consist of literally especially
- 14:30reading. Patricea was added into this because of her connections with the library,
- 14:35connection with books, and connection with reading. We do have representation matters that
- 14:41comes out on every first Saturday from twelve to two on the Whaling Park and
- 14:46they actually give books to our African American children. Want to give books to
- 14:52anyone. It does not have to be African. But it's just a learning
- 14:56journey and it sets them apart. It sets kids apart. They do a
- 15:00book club and different things. It's sets them apart. I literally we really
- 15:05have to learn learn that all children don't read at the same level. All
- 15:09children are not supposed to read at the same level because they're not there,
- 15:13and we have to take a step back. So that is one program.
- 15:18And like I said, Patriach came up for you know, for the literacy
- 15:22part. You know, we're gonna connect with the library to be able to
- 15:26do the competitions and see how many books these kids can read and different things
- 15:31like that. And then we have the Arabian Temple with George. Oh my
- 15:35goodness, George is amazing. We have the Arabian Temple and we have the
- 15:39nobles and they are amazing. Why because they want to see our youth prosper.
- 15:43They don't want to see the youth in the streets. They don't want
- 15:48to hear of crime going up. Yes, we have a new mayor,
- 15:52but mister Burgess can only do but so much. It takes It takes a
- 15:56village to do a village. We have another young lady, Danielle Richardson.
- 16:02She is the State of South Carolina advocate for Domestic Violet. She's all about
- 16:08mentoring her and Daryl is all about mentoring. And then you have and it's
- 16:15different people. So it's so many different people. And then we have a
- 16:18young lady that was just added. They call it yeah yeah on Facebook.
- 16:22She actually started a summer camp last year at The summer camp that she started
- 16:27last year is based off of them, and she started that in Hollywood,
- 16:33South Carolina. So we're gonna branch with her and see how all of us
- 16:37can come together and bring it to the table. We also have Shantaua Curry
- 16:42who is him and his wife are gonna do food their program their nonprofit.
- 16:48They actually work with trouble children and they actually the troubled youth that are incocerated,
- 16:56So they actually go to the jails, they go to schools, they
- 16:59go to different and they spend majority of their heart time. I'm taking care
- 17:04of these babies, and so you're not waiting on someone to come up with
- 17:10a solution those days. Over See, that's the biggest thing I love is
- 17:15the fact that we're not waiting for somebody on the outside to come in our
- 17:18community and make the difference. We're gonna start the difference from the inside.
- 17:23And y'all, when we say babies, we're not talking about four seven.
- 17:32No, we're talking about those that are older too, because there are our
- 17:34babies too. You know, we don't want to forget about those teenagers because
- 17:38to me, and I'm just speaking off of existence, when kids get between
- 17:45the ages of fourteen the seventeen, we don't pay them any attention. They
- 17:52are at lost you. But then when they turn eighteen, we want to
- 17:56tell you to come vote, We want to tell you to get a job.
- 17:59But what have happen from when I was fifteen sixteen? When you could
- 18:00have told me about money managing, You could have told me about a resume,
- 18:04You could have told me how to dress properly for a job. You
- 18:07could have told me about etiquette, but no. Yeah, So we talked
- 18:17about the components. We talked about how your heart is, we talked about
- 18:25some of the people that involved. So my question to you is, what
- 18:27would you like from the community. Where can the community come in and say,
- 18:34I'm here. To be honest, I want communities and they can reach
- 18:42out to me. I want communities people. I want to hear from the
- 18:47community. I want to hear because so many times, and I used to
- 18:52be that way. My mindset used to be, let's go feed them,
- 18:56let's clothe them, let's do different things. And I started going to an
- 19:00nonprofit class. And when I started learning at the nonprofit class, the biggest
- 19:03thing is so many times we want to help the community, but we go
- 19:07in the community and we give them what we feel we need to give to
- 19:11them, or we feel that we're giving them what they need, and we're
- 19:17not asking them. We're not serving them, we're not asking them what they
- 19:21need. If I'm a single mother and I need my water bill paid,
- 19:25you giving me food, that's all good and dandy, But the same time,
- 19:29I'm still stressing about Wow, am I gonna pay my water bill?
- 19:33Or how I'm gonna get this rent? Or how i'maa get this lightle?
- 19:37How am I gonna get childcare? It used to be years ago. I
- 19:41know what my fither. It used to be years ago where mothers would get
- 19:45together and we would watch each other's children while we work. And these days
- 19:49it's not even safe doing that. So where do we go from there?
- 19:55So I would love to hear from the community, and then when we get
- 19:59this program up and running, I would love for the community. It's volunteer
- 20:03time until we grow, because we all have to start from from somewhere to
- 20:08be able to grow. Volunteer volunteers are amazing and anything that you can come
- 20:15up with, there may being a component that we don't have in this system
- 20:19as far as like math or anything of different things like that. Okay,
- 20:23they made be a math teacher, they may be a tutor. They may
- 20:26be someone that can say, oh, well, you know what, I'll
- 20:30volunteer hour my time. I volunteer thirty minutes of my time so I can
- 20:34be able to so you can be able to teach another child something different.
- 20:40Right, And and people don't understand that just volunteering your kids, seeing that
- 20:45you care, and not just yeah, I'm about to step on some toes,
- 20:52not just caring when they got the new outfit, not just caring when
- 20:57it's prom time, not just when it's close to graduation. By carrying every
- 21:03day caring to me, see, I'm about to hit some tools. And
- 21:08you know how I am about my boy? Well you know, I know,
- 21:14I know, But it's it's deeper than that. And it's deeper than
- 21:18that, and you know my doublico principle, you know how I am.
- 21:22It's deeper than that. It's it's a simple fact of the matter. Because
- 21:27I was a single parent that raised five children out of I would say trauma.
- 21:34You know I as a child, you know, I was molested a
- 21:37eight and so literally a majority of my life I was built on trauma,
- 21:45was built on a mindset that, okay, so so how am I supposed
- 21:52to hear from this? Am I not supposed to hear from this? So
- 21:53I became something that I'm not. So literally, I became what the statistic
- 22:00has put all those years ago, and so literally, you got you have
- 22:07to look at it. We have to not all the time judge. For
- 22:11one we can't judge a book by a cover you all the time because you
- 22:14don't know exactly what that female is dealing with. They may have been married
- 22:19and it has been divorced them and now they became a single parent. The
- 22:25husband may have died and they became a single parent. See a lot of
- 22:27people want to take the components of oh she's a single parent or oh he's
- 22:33a single parent, but you don't know what that situation was and the reason
- 22:37of it. It's not all the time that the father is not going to
- 22:41be present in the child's life. That that woman may have had some kind
- 22:45of trauma in her life and to the point where that's why she's not allowing
- 22:51the father to see the children. Or she just has it so much in
- 22:55her heart that she loves him and does not know how to heal over that
- 22:57breakup, so she uses the children as a weapon. And a lot of
- 23:02times we don't want to address that, we don't want to address and step
- 23:06up my children's father. I praise them any chance I get why because I'm
- 23:11a bigger I'm a bigger person, because i know what I've had to go
- 23:14through as a single parent. I'm saying I'm saying single parent as yes,
- 23:18I raised them because their fathers had other things going on. But at the
- 23:22same time they they they fathers were in their lives. Their fathers are still
- 23:29in their lives and granted to my children, their father was never in their
- 23:33life. But have been never a point where we don't want to take the
- 23:40time to take accountability for self or accountability for the things that we did,
- 23:45accountability to the point where we can be able to apologize. We don't want
- 23:51to apologize. We don't want to move forward. We want to stay stuck
- 23:53and as mine. And as long as we keep that mindset where we're stuck,
- 23:59keep that mindset where okay, today, then my baby daddy ain't gonna
- 24:03see the children because he ain't did it up. That's that's not healthy.
- 24:07That's not healthy for you, that's not healthy for him, and that's not
- 24:11definitely not healthy for the children. A lot of times the people don't want
- 24:15to take the time of baby lead a step up. They don't and that
- 24:18and that and that comes with a growth process. You're right, you're right.
- 24:23So now you're you're aiming to start your summer camp this summer. Correct,
- 24:32Yes, we are so we're getting went to Arabian Temple with George Days
- 24:37and the Arabian Temple, and we're gonna see how we can work this out.
- 24:41Even if it's even if it's two weeks out of each month, it's
- 24:44a start. But this isn't something that that we just don't want to do
- 24:48for the whole entire summer. This is something that we're gonna continue continue to
- 24:56do for literally every every day of their lives. Each child that signs up
- 25:03that says Okay, I'm gonna do X, Y and Z, we're gonna
- 25:07be able to go to the schools with them. We're gonna go to the
- 25:10celebrations. We're gonna make the time. We're gonna make the sacrifice to be
- 25:14able to stick with these children because literally we are we allready got there you
- 25:21go. So it's like a building block. We're just starting small and working
- 25:23our way up. So we have we have we are a village that has
- 25:30to be a village to connect to a village. There you go, there
- 25:37you go. Especially with all the changes that it's going on in Charleston,
- 25:41I think now it's even more more relevant that we get this going and get
- 25:48it done and get it into working. So before we leave and and and
- 25:55I talk about summer reading and talk about your parents' tips, because the learning
- 26:00doesn't stop on school ends, you guys. And I'm gonna tell you all
- 26:03a little bit about that in a little minute. I'm gonna tell y'all about
- 26:07the summer slide. But how can people contact you? I can email you
- 26:12if they want to get more information, if they want to contribute, how
- 26:19about you give us that information so when they catch the replay and we share
- 26:23it out, they'll be able to get in contact with you and the Willing
- 26:27Heart Team, the Whaling Heart Team. You can see us on Facebook.
- 26:34We're on Facebook, the Willing Heart Team. Where on Facebook page, I'm
- 26:41the person that communicates a lot on the Facebook page. So we have two
- 26:45pages. We have the Whaling Heart Team page and the Willing Whaling Heart Team
- 26:49page. Our email address is Whaling Heart Team one at gmail dot com.
- 26:57Then we also have of the Whaling Heart Team the Whaling Heart Team dot org
- 27:03dart org. So Whale Heart Team one dot org, dart org. I'm
- 27:08sorry, yeah, yeah, So that's that's also our website and different things.
- 27:18And I'm telling you and you can also find me on Facebook, Nikki
- 27:22Shamiky Gray, Nikki Shamieky Meeky Gray at on Facebook. You can find me
- 27:29on Facebook. You can connect through me, through Patrice, you can connect
- 27:33through through everybody. I'm more because granted I did not tell I had a
- 27:41stroke September sixteenth of last year where I had to look how learn how to
- 27:47walk and talk again. So I might be a little slurt, but I
- 27:49had to learn how to walk and talk again. And I tell everybody it's
- 27:53about God's season and it has literally two I don't look like what I've been
- 28:02through, I really honestly don't. And it has enhanced what I've always wanted
- 28:07to do and what the vision I've always wanted fulfill. And a friend messaged
- 28:14me today and said, remember used to talk about that like four or five
- 28:18years ago. And because this is a friend that I share my book.
- 28:22Yea, I'm gonna be author in twenty thirty four. But I shared my
- 28:26book with him when I first started, when I first started out, I
- 28:30shared my book with him, and he has been part of my journey,
- 28:33part of my end. He said, remember when you used to talk about
- 28:34those days, those doors are opening, so now they're opening, and I
- 28:40don't want us to be able to be where we used to be. I
- 28:45want all of us to grow. I want all of us to prosper and

- 32:22thank you, thank you. So you guys, let me tell you something.
- 32:28Y'all know how I am. And when it comes to summer, for
- 32:30some reason, when its parents can think that school is over, it's time
- 32:36to throw away the books. But no, look inside your community. There
- 32:42are things out here for your babies. There are free programs. Just for
- 32:47instance, I work at a public library, and you guys know that,
- 32:50and I'm proud to say that I do. Do you not know that you
- 32:53can get prizes for reading and now and it's not only in Chosen but they
- 32:59are libraries across the United States that have summer reading programs. There's something that's
- 33:05called the summer slide. The summer slide what it what it entails is your
- 33:13child does not pick up a book or get any type of structural education for
- 33:19the summer, they're gonna lose everything they learn in the last nine weeks.
- 33:25So when you think about it and your child in school, when they start
- 33:30school the next school year, you might as well say they lost everything they
- 33:35learn between March and the end of the year. So we want to prevent
- 33:39that. So let's read to our kids. Let's write stories, Let's spend
- 33:46time, Let's go for walks, Let's have family game night. Let's invest
- 33:53back into the family. Okay, you guys, I do this with my
- 33:59daughter. We read, we have conversations. You would be shocked what these
- 34:04kids are going through. We need to come back to families. We need
- 34:08to come back to the village. We need to come back to where we
- 34:12started from. Okay, so go to your local library, get your library
- 34:17card, ask them, what do you guys have going on? What can
- 34:22I come in? What can I do my library? Oh my god,
- 34:24it's crazy how many events we going on? What am my events that I'm
- 34:30gonna have coming up is a sipping pink Motown position. So we're gonna be
- 34:36sipping on some mocktails, new alcohol. You guys were gonna paint, and
- 34:40we're gonna listen to some oldies are the Motown. Then we're gonna have some
- 34:45movie nights. We actually have CCSD will be bringing the kids lunches every day.
- 34:52So invest in your kids. If it's just fifteen minutes to an hour,
- 34:57okay, it's another night. It's in the book. We thank the
- 35:00Whaling Heart team is Mickey Gray for coming in and talking about her summer program.
- 35:07I'm gonna be back tomorrow night and I'm gonna be talking with Miss Tierra
- 35:10Farland. And she wrote the book called A Virgin Who Stole My Heart.
- 35:15Yeah, you know, I'm always bringing it back to the books. Thank
- 35:17you guys for joining me tonight. I see you tomorrow night. Bye.
- 35:25Let me go deep, deep, deep deep, Let me go oh,
- 35:43let me go oh. All things were in all the blue skies, but boys and
